rocking chairs when we were babies, we were strapped to them. In high school, we scribbled on them. Now, we look at them as wondrous things we go to straight after an enduring night on our heels. Let’s face it; chairs are always in the background. Now, it’s time to bring them center stage. We think these featured chairs deserve the spotlight and are ultimately at the top of our list. They are fun, chic, ultramodern and with their unique style they could perfectly sit an eligible bachelor or a hip kid.

feed your dreams
the good stuff
hard to believe, but just a few weeks ago I celebrated my company’s first year anniversary. I remember that day when I dared to march into the tax office and registered the name “Momo Catering”; never had I imagined that I could put the letters CEO after my name. But I guess everything is possible with a little talent and a big appetite. With a passion to feed people and a degree in finance and accounting in my back pocket, I share my kitchen experiences hoping that I will inspire you–if not to cook then to find your own passion and live it. Growing up as my mom’s right hand in the kitchen, I learned a thing or two about chopping and about life. For a long time though, I know she didn’t have the confidence in me to even butter a piece of toast. I remember one time she trusted me with the skillet to sauté some onions while she went to the basement to get other ingredients. Lo and behold, I stayed true to my responsibilities and stirred….and stirred…until the onions were scorched. “I said sauté, not burn!” What a sad day. Poor mother. Luckily I didn’t get rid of the apron then. How much I would have missed! As with any trade, you find that people try to follow every rule by the book instead of letting their own creativity flourish to express their talents in their own way. For example, I often hear of novice cooks that attempted to make dish xyz but would end up tossing it because some A private chef and caterer in Houston, element just wasn’t right. Don’t throw it away! she was born in Bangladesh and brings Remember, when it comes to food you can always a new light to the traditional flavors. salvage it! Unless of course your turkey looks like Find more about Momo Catering it stuck its head into an electric socket. on Twitter, Yelp, or Facebook.
I often get the same question from people, “if you didn’t go to culinary school, where did you learn to cook?” Any art form that I have had a passion for, I have taught myself. I started by researching the cultures and background of food to understand the concept and the basic flavors. Also, there were many long distance phone calls to my mom asking about homemade dishes we grew up devouring and what the secrets to those dishes were! You see, the point is that the kitchen is your canvas. It does not have to be one certain way. Be creative and work with what you have to make your own masterpiece in anything you do. As with any business, success only comes from what you put in. The countless hours (and countless more to come I’m sure) I spent organizing, reorganizing, researching, and formatting business papers and menus were half the fun. Knowing things will develop and grow over the years ahead gives me the confidence and drive to keep pursuing my dreams. moon jamaluddin

THE CARING HEART i first came to laredo in...
1976 after working in Brownsville for one year. I loved the culture and the area so when there was an opportunity to return to the border I took it. Laredoans taught me how to listen, learn, and empathize in two languages which prepared me for my work in Guatemala. When I completed my work there, I could have gone back to Springfield, but I told them Laredo was my home. my calling began…
at 12 when I first met the Sisters of Mercy. I was impressed with how they invited people of every age to be part of their ministry. Through them, I worked many years with the elderly at a retirement home; and when I began my nursing studies in
St. Louis, they continued teaching me by serving the most poor. I was engaged to be married when my mother died; however, I realized that I wanted to immerse myself in their mission. Fortythree years later I can say I’ve loved every minute. my mission work…
is inspired by the strength, resilience and compassion of the women who come to Casa de Misericordia. One woman left 17 years of abuse when her son told her, “If dad hits you one more time, I will kill him.” She knew then that keeping her family together and healthy meant leaving. After rebuilding her life with us, she is now a regular volunteer.
THE ARTISTIC EYE my motivation comes from...
everything—life experiences, dreams, nightmares, music, my environment. I have a saying, “Art surrounds us. It is everywhere, dying to be noticed. Imagination is the key which unlocks It.” My favorite painting is the one I have yet to paint. You should always stay hungry and open to new ideas, but most important of all, always be true to yourself and only paint what moves you. currently i’m working on...
a collection of sketches which usually come out of boredom and letting my idle hands think for themselves. They’re a window into the subconscious. I’m also collaborating with local writer Michael Joseph Dole; we take turns either writing or drawing whatever comes to mind with the goal of filling a journal with raw ideas. Some pretty interesting notions have come forth and we are close to completing and publishing it.
another project i have...
is live art paintings. I think it’s a great way to get art enthusiasts involved in the creation process and also make new aficionados. I’m painting the pieces upside down; it’s a very old and interesting teaching exercise. my digital works are on hold...
now that I have decided to go back to the roots of art. However, you can still see some of my work at http://community.ovationtv. com/rodart316
THE CULTURAL VOICE developing and promotion of culture…
has been a very rewarding career experience. I’ve worked in this field independently and now as a public official. I learned a lot when I participated at the state level in the 250th Anniversary Celebration of the state of Tamaulipas, and in the coordination of the Festivales de la Raza y de la Frontera. I also had the opportunity to be a part of Centro Cultural del Museo Reyes Meza and Estación Palabra since their inception. to foster culture in los 2 laredos…
I have a great team in my department. We are very passionate about our vocation and work equally hard inside a museum or in a neighborhood.
my interest in this field…
began 25 years ago. My colleagues Esther Oviedo, Lupita Carrasco and I started Raíces; we would set up art exhibits, bring concerts, etc. In 1989 we founded with other dear friends La Asociación Civil Cultural Fronteriza to promote different cultural expressions on both sides of the border. Among other things, we’ve premiered important films to further the interest in the Mexican cinema. I consider myself lucky; living on the border has given me a broader perspective on things. Culture can unite us. Culture is the main antidote against social crisis.

¿Qué ritmos escucharemos en Step Up 3D?

Bailar me apasiona.

Danzar requiere fuerza física y mente alerta.

Me encanta Yes.
The annual event, in its ninth year, will take place at the 46acre park October 8-10. This year’s headliners are the Eagles, Muse, and Phish. Other acts scheduled to perform include The Strokes, M.I.A., Flaming Lips, Vampire Weekend, and Band of Horses. The festival showcases plenty of indie bands; but with over 130 acts to see, there’s sure to be something for everyone. While the festival is known for its musical offerings, attendees can also enjoy local restaurants and shopping on site. Austin eateries such as
P. Terry’s Burger Stand, Torchy’s Damn Good Tacos, and Stubb’s BBQ opened food stands at last year’s festival (the list of 2010 participants isn’t up yet). Independent music store Waterloo Records also had a tent at the fest last year where patrons could not only buy CDs and vinyl, but also meet and get autographs from several ACL bands.

Me gusta integrar elementos inesperados y opuestos. –G.R.

Commissions & Fees | Although commissions are a normal cost of investing, don’t give up most of your profits paying them. Most recently many online brokers have gone through a series of price cuts as a way to attract more investors. Such as waiving all trading commissions on certain exchange traded funds, offering free trades with new accounts, and with the size of trades increasing as shares tumble commissions per share are a thing of the past; many have opted for simpler alternatives such as flat fees per trade. That’s great news but as with anything else, don’t forget to read the fine print. Sometimes these offers come with restrictions such as limits depending on value of the account, size of trades, and what investment vehicles are being traded.

Customer serviCe & ACCount ACCessibility | Ever find yourself sitting at the phone going through a series of number punching and elevator music just to get someone on the phone? With a time sensitive thing such as investing this is probably not an ideal scenario. You want an active broker with effective representatives you can get on the phone quickly as it is not always possible to be at your computer. Software and Internet accessibility are also important; you might consider a broker who offers Internet-based accounts and does not require any particular software. Consider an accessible account access using the proper technology that lets you make investment decisions at any moment and from anywhere.

so you are ready to get your hands in the market but you haven’t even looked at your first investment and already your first biggest decision is choosing an online broker. Today, there are online brokers (also known as discount brokers) lined up at your door waiting to help with your investments needs. These online brokers make it easier for you and me the average independent investor to get into the markets today. In recent years they have grown to become the most popular avenues to your traditional broker whom you traded with over the phone and had to have big pockets to invest with. These online brokers offer some of the lowest trading costs and latest technology. So with so many options and competitive costs, where do you start and how do you choose the right one for you? Here are four main things to look at when shopping for one:
minimum Deposits | Online brokers vary in the amount of capital you must deposit to open and maintain your account. With today’s easy access to the markets, you are not required a lot of capital to start trading. Some online brokers allow you to open an account with as little as $500 or have no minimum balance requirements. However, you may be faced with costs such as maintenance fees and other restrictions. For instance, if you are a day trader most brokers will ask for a higher minimum balance and the opening of a margin account. If you are a longer-term investor, then a lower cash account could work for you. Such accounts only allow you to enter new trades as the cash of previously exited trades settle which typically take 1 or 2 days.
3
teChnology, tools & serviCes | Access to market data, analysis, and research are also important. While the internet offers a mass portal to free market research, news, and other resources for your investment needs, you may be one that prefers the broker’s own proprietary information, education, and tools. Some brokers also offer message boards and forums where you can share and get ideas from other investors. Know what your needs and preferences are because you do not want to pay higher costs for features you will not use.
4
Finding the right broker is just as important as finding the right stock to invest in. Prioritizing your needs and what’s most important to you can make a huge difference in the outcome of your returns.

buying pets is so last summer boo radley is a playful medium-sized dog from the laredo animal shelter, a densely— about two feet—Maltese mix. He’s small-standing with white and honey hair dragging down to his paws. He finds it hard to land when jumping up and down from the joy we bring to him as he looks at us through his one and only sweet, glimmering eye that makes even non-dog lovers fall madly for him. Like many other cats and dogs, Boo Radley (yes, I named him that after five seconds of meeting him) is a stray that was found badly injured. I can barely picture exactly what he—and every other animal in this situation—looked like before being rescued by the shelter: pleasantly roaming the streets searching for food, perhaps visiting his neighborhood dog friends, or maybe even playfully nipping and growling at cats. There’s one thing you need to know about sheltered animals: they’re the whole package, guys. Really. The ongoing brooding self analysis of their entire life? Check. The sincerity ego mixed with loyalty and the fact that they went from rags to riches? Check. Okay, so they may need extra care and some may not be a breed but a mix, but the true wonder is that it only takes a fifteen dollar vaccination to save the life of an innocent animal. Oh, and the super hero feeling afterward? Priceless. “For two months, we got 2,400 animals and less than twenty percent got adopted,” says the graceful Lori Brizius sitting down in her office, as I tumultuously shake my mane in disbelief. “Spring time equals kittens. We get an overload and sometimes get here in the morning to kittens hanging inside grocery bags on the front door,” Brizius says. Eighty percent of the cats and dogs that come in are sick or are showing signs
of illness which leads the shelter to put them to sleep. This alone should convince everyone to stop pet overpopulation. We can do our share by simply neutering or spaying our own pets. A year ago, on a soaking wet January morning, I visited our local animal shelter. I walked in not expecting what I was about to see. The sight of over-sized cages massed along the yard and the sound of dogs barking in a grandstand crescendo instantly stole my heart. I knew then I was bound to fall under their spell. ‘Laredo Animal Shelter’ read the sign as I walked in, which I obviously misread it for ‘waiting for you in this yard, is your new best friend.’ To hear about it is one thing, but to experience it is truly another. The conflicted trip is hard and disconcerting because these animals are all so beautiful and indulgent. It’s difficult to imagine that anyone would be unmoved or uncaring after seeing so many charming pups in one yard. At a certain point I begin recalling the scene in Breakfast at Tiffany’s when Audrey Hepburn finds Cat and keeps him throughout the entire movie. Perhaps this may not make complete sense, but the fact that this street cat made Hepburn desperately run in the rain (in her amazing trench coat) searching after him never ceased to amaze me. Little did I know that on that same rainy day, I was going home with dog food, a bed, a glint of joy in my eye, and a Maltipoo soon to be named Mischa.
Unable to suppress the tears from my eyes, I leave the shelter without Boo Radley. On the plus side, I now come home to Mischa. And anyone who has experienced the intoxication and comfort of best friendship knows what I’m talking about. If you don’t, go to your local animal shelter, adopt a pet, and live happily ever after. gabriela enríquez
