Introduction “Leighton Park has a strong community where your opinions are listened to and valued. This has boosted my self-confidence as I am accepted for who I am”

Leighton Park School is an independent, coeducational day and boarding school which welcomes students of all nationalities, religions and languages. Ours is a vibrant community based on the Quaker values of simplicity, truth, peace, sustainability, integrity, respect and equality, where individuality is celebrated and where all members of the community are equally valued. Students at Leighton Park are encouraged to be inquisitive, analytical and to view education as a lifelong experience. Through creative learning experiences and committed staff, our curriculum is designed to inspire students to reach their potential academically, personally and socially. Our focus on students as individuals is absolutely central to our educational approach. The breadth and flexibility in the curriculum recognises that students have different needs and interests and, with guidance from staff, students are given a range of opportunities to shape their education to suit their skills and ambitions.

Giles, Lower Sixth

We aim to inspire and support each student to prepare for their future by reaching their potential academically and personally.

“Leighton Park’s culture taught me many things, but important among them I learnt to be myself, treat others with respect, get involved and always enjoy what I do.” Sebastian, Old Leightonian 3

Curriculum Leighton Park is a vibrant learning community, which embodies a culture of high performance, essential to creating a positive impact on student achievement, attainment, behaviours and progress.

Holistic curriculum

An individualised approach

The curriculum is academically rigorous, combining analytical and creative approaches, and strives to achieve greater coherence by:

Small average class sizes of sixteen students, or seven in the Sixth Form, enables our subjectspecialist teachers to tailor lessons so that students don’t just understand their learning but really enjoy it. Our approach supports students to develop their intellectual curiosity whilst becoming independent, lifelong learners with the skills to make a positive contribution in a rapidly changing world. Our Individual Learning Centre provides further support to help students optimise their approaches to learning should they need it.

• Making connections between academic subjects • Using a problem-based approach to explore real-world challenges • Contextualising and extending learning through day trips and field work • Working with industry and higher education partners • Integrating the school’s strong pastoral and cocurricular programme into the school day. 4

ICT: Leighton Park is a Lead School for the Network of Teaching Excellence in Computer Science. This strength is reflected across the curriculum, with ICT embedded in all subject areas as well as a discipline in itself. The school provides students with Chromebooks, with which to access our Google Classrooms virtual learning environment (VLE). This VLE integrates seamlessly with the Active Touch interactive screens in each classroom.

All students follow a two year GCSE course comprising of nine or ten subjects selected from 30 options. These are made up of core subjects, which all students must study, and optional subjects, from which six should be selected, including one reserve.

Years 10 and 11

For full details of the GCSE course options, please see our website www.leightonpark.com/GCSE Physical education, games and ‘Your Life’** are provided for all, and there is a substantial careers programme and individual tutorial guidance. In addition, all students in Years 10 and 11 will complete a personal project as part of the Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) programme, including Arts Award, Sports Leader Award, Duke of Edinburgh Award and First Give.

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): In addition to the core subjects, all students have CAS electives sessions, where they participate in games and activities. CAS electives are opportunities for students to discover the importance of learning from life beyond academic studies, encouraging them to think creatively, get actively involved in the community and to consider ways in which they can help others. Approaches to Learning (AtL): This aims to develop skills with an emphasis on thinking critically and ethically. It promotes higher level thinking skills and enables students to become independent learners.

* Our Beliefs and Values course incorporates the subject traditionally known as Religious Education ** Our ‘Your Life’ course incorporates Personal, Social, Health (PSHE) and Careers education *** Language options may be subject to change from year to year and all will be continuation courses. Please contact Admissions for further information

Pre-Sixth Course The Pre-Sixth course is an intensive one year academic programme designed for international students. This course will appeal to academically ambitious 15 and 16 year olds who are already confident in their written and spoken English and would relish the challenge of studying abroad. Students sit a minimum of five GCSEs, including English, Mathematics, another Language (French, Spanish, Latin), a Humanities subject (History or Geography) and Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics). We anticipate that the students will achieve the academic grades to enable them to progress into our Sixth Form.

“The school has been very supportive and has helped tremendously with the important decisions related to my next step after leaving school, making me feel very confident about the future.

Sixth Form The Leighton Park Sixth Form experience is structured around a two year course. Students are able to choose between A Levels or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. The course is enriched with various opportunities for developing interests and skills outside the classroom. These opportunities include, but are not limited to: Cambridge Technicals Level 3 Sports, which can be taken in place of one A Level; Rockschool Graded Music Exams and Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Most GCSE students continue on to Sixth Form at Leighton Park through our transition programme, which has been developed to support students in their selection of courses and subjects and to introduce the study skills that will be required to excel in these years. This includes a Sixth Form Open Evening, a Sixth Form Academic Induction programme, detailed consultation with staff, and a taste of the social programme, an important feature of life in the Sixth Form. For A Level, students study three to four subjects, as well as preparing for the Extended Project, which can lead to an additional qualification with associated UCAS points. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme offers an internationally accepted alternative to A Levels. It is an academic programme that allows students to study six subjects, three at standard and three at higher level. Additionally, it includes the core subjects; Theory of Knowledge, Creativity, Activity, Service and an Extended Essay.

Upper Sixth student

Both the IB Diploma and A Levels are challenging programmes but the effort is highly rewarding. The progress of every student is monitored on a regular basis against national baseline tests (Alis) and targets are set and regularly reviewed to support their success. Please visit our website for the latest course updates for IB and A Level. www.leightonpark.com/SixthForm 6

Boarding Leighton Park is more than just a school: it is a community that offers young people an exceptional and enriching preparation for life. The five Houses form the heart of the community for both day and boarding students. Students can make friends of all ages, from all over the country and the world, developing well balanced friendships. Students can mix socially in the shared areas of the Houses, experiencing a residential environment, which helps with their transition to university life. Those living away from home need a comfortable and secure environment where they can study, but also grow as individuals. Each of the Houses quickly becomes a home to those who live there – whether full, weekly and flexi boarders or day students who stay for the occasional night. Each House is managed by a Housemaster or Housemistress who, supported by the House assistants and Tutors, together take on the responsibility for ensuring that each child is supported both in their academic and social development. Sixth Formers usually have single study bedrooms and younger students typically share a room with one to three others. Students are encouraged to make their bedrooms as homely as possible. Each House is unique, with its own character and all members of the House, from the youngest to the eldest, are fully involved in the life of the House, which is exemplified in the keenly anticipated inter-House competitions. Each House has their own library, study area, games and television rooms and kitchenettes where students can prepare snacks.

“What I like about the teachers is that they are always ready to help you; they stay after school activities to help and are around on Saturdays too. Alex, Year 11 8

Beyond Academic

“I like the friendly nature of the school and the way that, even though I am new, I feel as though I’ve been welcomed by the student community.”

Whether at lunchtime or after school, students are encouraged to try new things, to discover and nurture their talents and to challenge themselves to go beyond their own expectations.

Araba, Lower Sixth

All students are expected to participate in activities outside of the academic curriculum and with so many options, there really is something for everyone! Lower School students, Years 7 and 8, are encouraged to take three activities a week, and those in Year 9 and above two. In the Sixth Form, as students prepare their applications for university, the activities they have been involved in can make a major difference to the strength of their all-important personal statement. Boarders have an additional programme of activities at weekends. Cinema trips, ice skating, go karting and shopping are always popular and there are other regular trips, such as to theme parks, paint-balling, shows or visits to London. Day students are welcome to join these too.

“There’s a strong bond between all of the students. I think it’s great because no matter what year you’re in, girl or boy, you feel like you’re valued.”

Most activities are included in the fees. If there is an additional charge, for example with activities off-site or requiring specialist tuition, a form will be sent home for parents to sign to authorise payment. This will usually be in electronic format via the weekly eBulletin. Find our full co-curricular brochure online at: www.leightonpark.com/activities

Bursaries and Scholarships Bursaries

Academic Scholarships Candidates seeking Year 7 or Year 9 entry will be selectively invited to sit the Academic Scholarship assessments based on their performance in our January entrance tests. Candidates seeking entry to the Sixth Form should complete a Scholarship Application Form.

Leighton Park Trust aims to improve accessibility to those students who would otherwise be unable to benefit from its education on financial grounds. There are a limited number of bursaries that may be available in cases of financial hardship for existing and prospective students. Bursaries are always means tested and subject to annual review. Application forms are required in all cases and are available from the Bursary once a registration form has been received.

Candidates sitting the academic scholarships will undertake a written examination on a maximum of two academic subjects of their choice from within the Humanities, Sciences, Mathematics, English and Modern Languages. Candidates will also be required to undertake a Scholar’s Interview.

Please email jennyrowe@leightonpark.com to request the bursary application form or for further information.

Art and Design Scholarships

All bursary applications should be received by the Bursary no later than Friday 15th November 2019 for entry in September 2020.

Candidates are expected to show an appropriate level of technical skill, but, more importantly, imagination and a commitment to the subject. They are required to submit a portfolio of work, take a short practical exam and will be interviewed by departmental staff.

The parents of all students offered a bursary will be expected to reapply every year, and bursaries will be subject to review annually. All applicants will be informed of the decision by the 1st March preceding the September of entry.

Drama Scholarships The Drama Department encourages applications from candidates interested in all aspects of performance, including dance. The scholarships are also open to students who are keen to pursue their interest in the technical and design aspects of theatre.

Scholarships A number of scholarships are granted for entry to Year 7, Year 9 and Sixth Form on the basis of a competitive examination. These scholarships are also open to those already in the school. Once gained, a scholarship normally lasts throughout the student’s time at Leighton Park but is subject to a satisfactory review of progress each year.

Candidates will be required to perform a short audition piece of their choosing or present a portfolio of their Design/Technical work followed by an interview.

Candidates can apply for any combination of scholarships. Successful candidates may be awarded more than one but will only receive the financial benefits of one. The financial benefit will be in the region of 10% of day student fees.

Music Scholarships There is no written examination, as awards are made for practical musical accomplishments. The emphasis is on musical potential as well as prior musical achievement. Associated Board practical exams are a useful indicator but other factors will also be considered. Candidates will have an interview, audition and auditory test.

Sport Scholarships Candidates should be playing a sport at county level, or equivalent. They will be required to attend a trial session at Leighton Park, usually linked to a games session with students of a similar age. In addition they will attend an interview with the Director of Sport and a fitness test.

Candidates must formally register for a place at the school before they can apply for a scholarship. The scholarship registration deadline for 2020 entry is Friday 15th November 2019. Scholarship assessments normally take place during the last week in January and the first week in February. Candidates must be available to attend their scholarship assessment on the date set. For further information, please contact the Admissions Office on 0118 987 9608 or email admissions@leightonpark.com 11

Students applying for a place in the Lower Sixth will not in ordinary circumstances be asked to sit an entrance test but will be required to achieve the requisite GCSE or equivalent results. There will however be an interview with a senior member of the academic team. Students will be required to supply official documentation to verify their GCSE or equivalent results.

For a copy of our detailed Admissions Policy please go to www.leightonpark.com/policies. For further details, please contact our Admissions Team on 0118 987 9608 or email admissions@leightonpark.com.

The application process

Students whose first language is not English will be required to sit an EAL (English an Additional Language) test and may be required to sit other subject area papers depending upon their previous educational background and subject choices.

The first step in the application process is to complete and return the Registration Form, a copy of your child’s passport and payment of the registration fee of £100 for EU nationals or £175 for non-EU nationals. Please note, this fee is nonrefundable.

Overseas applications

You will receive confirmation once your Registration Form has been processed. Once your child is registered, we will keep you informed of school developments and the next stages of the admissions process for your child. Registration is not a guarantee of admission.

We understand that it may not be possible for students from overseas to sit the tests at Leighton Park School. Therefore, arrangements can be made, via the Admissions Office, for students to sit tests at their current school under suitable examination conditions. Interviews will be conducted via Skype.

Separate application forms for Scholarships and Bursaries are required. See pages 10-11 for further information.

Offer of a Place For applicants who sit entrance tests in early January, parents will be notified of the outcome of their application in writing by the end of January 2020. Parents of successful students will have until the 7th March 2020 to formally accept the place offered.

Entrance Tests All prospective students registered for Years 7 and 9 will be invited to sit a set of entrance tests in the January preceding the academic year of entry. For entry to the school in September 2020, the entrance tests will be held on Saturday 11th January 2020.

Acceptance deposit

The entrance tests are taken at the school, will last approximately 4.5 hours and will include online tests in English and Maths plus a handwritten essay.

The following deposits are payable on acceptance of a place: - UK Nationals: £1,000 - EU Nationals: £4,000 - Non-EU Nationals: A deposit equivalent to 50% of annual fees is required.

The tests are supplemented by a short interview with a senior member of the academic team. 14

Please note: a full term’s fees will be payable on or before the first day of term in addition to the acceptance deposit.

- Towards the end of the spring term each year the Board of Governors sets the level of fees for the following academic year. Parents are given a full term’s notice of the fees for the forthcoming year. All school income goes towards the provision of education and facilities.

All deposits include a £100 subscription for lifetime membership of the school’s alumni association, ‘Old Leightonians’ and this element will be retained by the school when students leave. The balance of deposits may be fully refunded and shown as a credit on the final leaver’s bill or you may choose to present this as a Leaver’s Gift to the Bursary Fund at the end of your child’s time at Leighton Park.

Explanatory notes Siblings A sibling is defined as a child for whom admission is sought and who already has a brother/sister or step-brother/sister living in the same family unit and in attendance at the school, at the time of his/ her entry to the school. Both children need to be in attendance at Leighton Park at the same time to qualify for sibling discount. Therefore, in the normal admissions process, there will be no sibling connection for applicants for entry into Year 7 if they have a brother or sister in Upper Sixth at the time of application.

Additional and Explanatory Notes Additional notes - A full term’s notice is required for: o The withdrawal of a student: this must be given in writing to the Head; otherwise a term’s fees in lieu of notice will be due, received on or before the first day of term. o A change from boarding to day status, otherwise the full boarding fee will be charged for the remainder of the term.

Please note: a sibling does not include a cousin or other relative living in the same household. Admission of twins, triplets or other children from multiple births Where fewer places within a year group can be offered than there are children from multiple births living at a single address, the school has the discretion to treat this as an exceptional case and may admit all such children in order not to split the family.

- Half a term’s notice is required in writing to the Director of Music for withdrawal from individual music tuition. - The current rate of interest charged under paragraph I87 of the Standard Terms and Conditions for late payment is 1.5% per month. 15
