ST JOHN’S ONLINE SESSIONS HELPING CHILDREN DURING LOCKDOWN

St John’s online sessions helping children during lockdown

Lockdown and the restrictions in place meant the weekly Sunday morning Kids’ Church had to temporarily end. However, this hasn’t stopped Children and Families worker, Rachael Williams, who is now delivering her sessions online for children and families across Goole

Our Goole had a chat with Rachael to find out more about the fantastic work she has been doing these past months.

How did the idea come about?

I moved to Goole and started my job as the Children and Families worker at St John’s Church (it used to be known as the parish church) just before Christmas last year. We’re down near the docks and you can see the spire from almost everywhere in Goole. My role is to help children and families by providing different ways for them to get involved and interact with their faith and the church. I had planned to run a family event at Easter for families to explore the Easter story but that ended up not happening due to lockdown!

“Facebook has become a great way to start something new. I feel it has been a success moving online and I am now in more regular contact with our church families as well as some newer families too.”

So because I couldn’t gather people together I moved online. I started to send out weekly emails for families already connected with the church with a bible story, craft activities and a creative prayer idea. However, I knew I wanted to reach more families in Goole so moved on to social media and started up a Facebook page. I have been sharing content every day on there when i’m working. The Facebook live videos are getting lots of views too!

How has lockdown/ coronavirus impacted on the services you provide?

We have had to stop meeting on a Sunday morning for our

regular Kids’ Church (which is for 3-11 year olds and runs during our 11.15am Sunday service), but I feel it has been a success moving it online and I am now in more regular contact with our church families as well as some newer families too. I send out regular emails to the families and craft packs with resources in for families that don’t have access to a printer or the resources to make the crafts each week.

Facebook has become a great way to start something new and I have started a new online virtual toddler group called ‘Tots @ 2!’ in which I spend around 15/20 minutes on

Facebook live singing lots of songs. I tell a bible story and we pray together. It’s a fun way for those with toddlers and pre-schoolers to join in and have fun in their own homes.

What are your plans for the future?

I want to connect more with the town. When it is possible to do so I will be starting a toddler group in the church hall (Spire Centre) across the street from the main church

building. I want to connect more with the schools and continue sharing more about Jesus with the people here in Goole. God loves Goole and we at St John’s loves you too. At the moment, the online Zoom sessions are taking place on Tuesdays at 4pm and Sundays on Facebook Live at 3pm. For more information please visit ‘St John’s Kids Goole’ on Facebook.

Property expert David Leake of Housesetc tells us about how the current health crisis has affected the property industry and how now could be the right time to buy

Has there ever been a better time to buy or sell a property?

It would appear that there has never been a better time to buy and sell property.

With historical low interest rates plus the recently announced Stamp Duty Holiday for homebuyers means movers and investors could save up to £15,000 until March 2021. The stamp duty holiday offers substantial savings for existing homeowners moving to more expensive properties. In England and Northern Ireland, instead of stamp duty kicking in at £125,000, it will now only apply at £500,000 – meaning big savings for people moving up the property ladder. Investors can also benefit from the tax giveaway. Previously, an investor buying a £500,000 home would have needed to pay 3% on the first £125,000 (£3,750), 5% on the next £125,000 (£6,250) and 8% on the remaining £250,000 (£20,000), resulting in a stamp duty bill of £30,000. Now, though, they’ll only need to pay 3% on the whole £500,000 (£15,000), resulting in a saving of £15,000. Data shows: • UK house price inflation is +2.4%, up from 1.6% at start of year. UK city price inflation slows to +2.1%. • UK house price growth is expected to remain at around +2% over the next quarter. Downward pressure on prices is not expected to materialise until much later in 2020. • New sales are back to pre-Covid levels, as is the flow of new supply although the stock of homes for sale is 15% lower than a year ago. This will support prices in the short term, but demand is starting to fall off a high base and we expect it to decline further over the summer months and into the autumn. The bulk of new pricing evidence continues to come from sales agreed before the lockdown. Data on pricing for new post-lockdown sales agreed is starting to feed through and points to a resumption in the upward pressure in house prices seen at the start of the year. The headline rate of house price growth is expected to remain in the 2-3% range over the next quarter. We do not see any downward pressure on prices materialising until much later in 2020. Asking prices for sold homes are 7% higher than last year. One indicator is the average asking price for homes marked as sold on Zoopla in the first 2 weeks of June which are 7% higher than a year ago (on a non mixadjusted basis). This is a return to levels seen over the first quarter of 2020. We are not saying the growth rate in our UK house price growth is going to rise over 5% in the near term, but the general direction of the two series track each other over time supporting our view that house price growth will hold up in the near term.

Your time is precious, so don’t waste it doing something just for the sake of being busy. Cancer (21st June- 22nd July) You shouldn’t take anything or anyone too seriously right now. There is a lot of uncertainty around many things. Keep your cards close to your chest. Libra (23rd Sept-22nd Oct) Stop cleaning up people’s mess. You have worked as hard as everyone else. So why should they expect you to stay on longer to get the place back into

shipshape order?
