The Alsip Park District engaged Hitchcock Design Group in the planning and renovation of the playground at the Apollo Recreation Center. In addition to general use, the playground is heavily used by the Alsip Park District’s Summer Camp and Pre-school Programs. The Southwest Special Recreation Association is based at the Apollo Recreation Center and uses the playground for their special needs programs. One of the past designs of the playground included a rocket ship, which generated many fond memories of being the “Rocket Park” by park district staff and park users. The Alsip Park District decided to bring back the rocket ship space theme and reviewed several designs prior to deciding on this scheme. The safety surfacing graphics refined the space theme. Congrautations to the Alsip Park District!

Hitchcock Design Group was retained as a part of the Pappageorge Haymes Partners team to assist with the design of the streetscape improvements, drop off, and rooftop amenity decks for this project located in the heart of Streeterville. Inspired by the leaves of an aspen tree, the overlapping leaf-shape nodes of the tower provided an opportunity for the design team to develop high-end amenity spaces that complement the architecture. Using overlapping circles, the sixth floor amenity deck has different circular spaces for amenities which include a pool, cabanas, an outdoor bar, various types of seating, multiple council rings, a multiuse space, kitchenettes and a wide variety of landscaping. The thirty-eighth floor amenity space is more passive and provides different types of seating to enjoy the surrounding panoramic views.

The City of Greenfield hired the Hitchcock Design Group led team to create a new gateway entrance into the City at the intersection of State Route-9 (SR9) and I-70. They desired a contemporary statement that highlighted where the city is heading, while celebrating their past. The team’s solution consists of large steel columns that flank the highway and frames where SR-9 crosses I-70. Materials for the gateway were selected that tie into Greenfield’s historic architecture and agricultural past while the bold size and arrangement signifies the city confidently stepping into the future. As the project lead, Hitchcock Design Group collaborated with civil, structural, lighting and soil consultants to identify opportunities and constraints that exist on the site and create construction documents that bring the design from concept to reality.

The project sponsors engaged Hitchcock Design Group and Piet Oudolf to prepare rehabilitation plans. The project team made extensive recommendations for the site including incorporating lush native perennials into the landscape to provide year-round seasonal interest, attract birds, and make the garden more interesting, beautiful, and sustainable. Members of the Humboldt Park community also joined the Chicago Park District, the Chicago Parks Foundation, and the Conservancy in efforts to help provide financial support and advice on a new planting plan and design for the popular park amenity. The revitalization project will enhance this outdoor green space for families and friends who often gather here to take pictures for special occasions, transforming this once vibrant formal garden into a spectacular display of perennials. To implement this ambitious plan, the project sponsors are seeking donations with a goal of $2 million to fund the garden revitalization and establish a maintenance endowment.

Welcome to The Galena Territory Association’s Marina! Our Marina is the gateway to the beautiful 225-acre Lake Galena and offers members and visitors countless opportunities to experience our unique lifestyle…right on the waterfront. Positioned at the lake’s eastern headwater, the Marina captures long westerly views across the lake and to wooded bluffs. The lake environment’s abundant fisheries and wildlife make it one of The Galena Territory Association’s (GTA) most cherished amenities, and the Marina itself hosts GTA’s boating and angling operations, event rentals, active and passive land-based recreation, and a variety of member-services. Despite the beautiful setting, the quality and function of the Marina falls below the GTA’s expectations for their amenity offerings, and as such, a planning team assembled to prepare a vision for the Marina’s redevelopment. Hitchcock Design Group led the planning team which included leadership from the GTA’s Board of Directors, Long Range Planning Commission, Lake Management & Ecology Advisory Group, Greenspace Advisory Group, and senior staff. The planning team wanted the vision of the Marina to reflect the nature-centric character of the Territory, to create community pride, to serve a multigenerational demographic year-round and activate the entire asset with highest and best land-uses, all positioned to maximize function, use, and aesthetics. Overall, the Marina Complex is designed for many dimensions of multi-generational wellness. The diverse mix of amenities, the increased programming capacity of the indoor and outdoor spaces, and the nearly one-mile of pedestrian walking surfaces (between the courts and the lakefront pavilion) offer dozens of shaded areas for relaxation, socializing and admiring the Territory – all positioning the GTA as the premier community in the Midwest and an appreciating value proposition for its members, their guests, and those contemplating an investment in one of the many unique neighborhoods.

HDG collaboratively developed three master plan options for the previous Maytag World headquarters and manufacturing site and buildings for Client review. A final master plan, support graphics, cost opinion and animation were then developed to capture the preferred vision for the redevelopment of the facility as a resource for DMACC, the City of Newton, augment grant applications, and to catalyze private sector office rental or sale. HDG led the site design and prepared the user-friendly final site graphics and animation. The master plan created a greyfield redevelopment plan to serve multiple public agencies in their goal of redeveloping a historically-significant, major business site adjacent to their downtown into a state-wide destination for education, business, culture and recreation. It incorporates historic story-telling and art works, architectural adaption and modernization, and performance- and recreation-based open space development, in a multi-phased solution.

In an effort to increase the offerings at the already popular Turtle Splash Water Park, the West Chicago Park District engaged Hitchcock Design Group team to create an adventure playground that would serve as the dry complement to the water park. The vision for the space was that it would be dynamic and challenging enough to compete with the splash park. In response to this request, the team created a playground that features many custom Gametime play pieces that dare children to play differently. An overall tropical theme for the new playground was selected to tie into the existing water park while a custom designed, multi-tiered play structure was built, that resembles trees and a treehouse, to serve as the central hub the park. A one-of-akind bounce play piece, that is the first of its kind in the United States, was incorporated into the playground, while misting rock cooling fans and a splash pad were added to complete the space. The Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC) originally retained Hitchcock Design Group to develop a playground master plan for the Lincoln Campus of the Columbus Signature Academy. CSA Lincoln was designed the Gunnar Birkerts in 1967 and is a prime example of mid-century modern school design. Located on 5th Street (a.k.a. The Avenue of the Architects), CSA Lincoln is one of the key buildings included in the Columbus Area Visitors Center Architectural Tour. Given the significance of the site, Hitchcock Design Group researched the history of the project and discovered an early conceptual design for the playground in the Columbus Indiana Architectural Archives (CIAA). This design created a series of circular outdoor rooms that supported the square within a circle design of the building. The HDG team used this early concept as the basis for the playground design but incorporated new programmatic elements such as a drive lane for student drop off, a shade structure and outdoor classroom as well as more greenspace and play mounds. The HDG design team strove to incorporate elements related to the strong geometry of the building such as the wood globe climbing structure, circular multi-swings and geometric climbers. Members of the CSA Lincoln community were also involved in the some of the design elements. Jonathan Nesci, a CSA Lincoln Parent and local artist and furniture designer created custom concrete stools for the outdoor classroom. The parent group and staff at CSA Lincoln liked the master plan so much that they raised $250,000 of the overall $700,000 project cost in order to construct the entire design in one phase.

The Indianapolis Parks Foundation engaged the Hitchcock Design Group team to create an innovative, engaging and versatile Play Space in downtown Indianapolis. As the Play Space will be located in the visual foreground of the Indianapolis Skyline and along the canal walk, views of the space are as important as the user’s experience of the space. This location also allows the Play Space to be a natural contributor to the canal’s cultural aesthetic with its interpretive forms that give subtle hints to its representation, while receiving material cues from its surroundings. Primary play-attraction lies in the Play Space’s three major interactive events; the group “party-spinner”, the embankment “slide-race”, and the flowing “splash-climber” system, which traverses the fourteen-foot slope between the Cultural Trail and the canal. The Play Space will also boast the first custom net climber in the Midwest and become the first outdoor play environment in downtown Indianapolis.
