Our firm made incredible advancements in 2019, really too many to mention. Noteworthy 2018 OPEN SPACE LAND ACQUISITION AND DEVELOPMENT (OSLAD) HDG assisted 18 communities with OSLAD/LWCF grant applications in October of 2018. We found out in February that all off those 18 communities were awarded grants in a total amount of $6,150,000 awarded funds! Now we await 2019 grant results. Stay tuned!

WGN’S MORNING NEWS FEATURE OF THE NAPERVILLE RIVERWALK In July of this year, our founder, Rick Hitchcock, was invited to speak on behalf of Hitchcock Design Group about the famed Naperville Riverwalk on WGN Morning News. The riverwalk, located in downtown Naperville, Illinois has become a catalyst for the city. 40 years in the making, the riverwalk has sparked economic development in the downtown area.

100 PROJECTS WITH ROMEOVILLE In September of this year, we were awarded our 100th project in Romeoville. HDG has completed many notable works in the past 20 years in Romeoville, Illinois. This is a historic moment for HDG, so thank you to the Village of Romeoville for their continued confidence in our team.
STATE REPRESENTATIVE, MICHELLE MUSSMAN, TOURED BISON’S BLUFF IN SCHAUMBURG, ILLINOIS On October 16, 2019, State Representative Michelle Mussman, 56th District, her assistant Kevin Bouchard, and ILASLA leadership were treated to a tour of award-winning Bison’s Bluff in Schaumburg, Illinois. Led by members of the park’s design team: Eric Hornig (Hitchcock Design Group), Todd King (Schaumburg Park District), and Matt Gaynor (Schaumburg Park District); Representative Mussman learned first-hand what it took to put together the beloved park and the critical role that landscape architecture played in the project.

Rick Hitchcock
Founder and Board of Directors Emeritus As of December 2019, our founder and former president, Rick Hitchcock, has decided to retire from active work at Hitchcock Design Group. Forty years ago, over a long Thanksgiving holiday, Rick began a plan to start his own company. On January 2, 1980, he launched Hitchcock Design, Inc. in Naperville, Illinois. With a handful of developer contacts and a loan from his mother, he set up shop in a garage behind what is now Peet’s Coffee in Naperville. From there, with the generosity and faith from a Naperville Riverwalk Commissioner, Rick was given the opportunity to design what is now the famed Naperville Riverwalk, an economic catalyst for the entire City of Naperville. That’s where it began. Things worked out pretty well. Today, Hitchcock Design Group is successful by many meaningful measures. Arguably, we have defied the odds by growing from a small, unknown, local sole-proprietorship into a multi-office, regionally-recognized leader in landscape architecture. I’m proud that together we have created better places for thousands of private, public, and institutional clients, cultivated countless long-lasting relationships, and nurtured a valuable enterprise that is positioned to thrive, long after my involvement. Initiated by the Columbus Redevelopment Commission, community leaders approved an integrated four-part strategy to create and sustain an iconic riverfront experience that strengthens Columbus’ distinctive brand and robust economy. At the western gateway to its historic downtown, the 22-acre Columbus Riverfront concept includes connections to engage motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and paddlers, compelling attractions including the conversion of a low head dam into an exciting in-river whitewater feature, a highamenity riverwalk, a nature-based children’s play environment, and a captivating appearance that respects the city’s extraordinary cultural heritage. The $9 million first segment is expected to promote adjacent land development, generate over $100,000 in annual local and state tax revenue, and attract the area’s high-tech workforce. Hitchcock Design Group facilitated community engagement and created the concept alongside a team of experts in market and real estate economics, dam removal / whitewater recreation, water resources, and structural engineering.

A natural extension of the wildly successful Bellaboo’s Play & Discovery Center, the Outdoor Discovery Center will bring the excitement of learning through playing outside, transforming unused area into a robust children’s garden and learning campus for families of all ages and abilities. Six special gardens will bring opportunities to play, splash, learn, and discover in a unique travel destination experience for the Northwest Region and beyond. Cap’n Bellaboos Quarters was selected for the first phase The centerpiece is a large wooden pirate ship set out to sea. Floating barrels, a capsized rowboat, and an accessible rowboat can be seen off the port bow. No ocean voyage would be complete without a tale of giant sea creatures, for which we added a life size (but friendly) whale modeled as a play climber and slide for the young buccaneers to enjoy. A Treasure Island themed splash pad and shallow stream experience with ground geysers and elevated runnels provide a chance to cool off from their work on the high seas.

Hitchcock Design Group, in collaboration with HKS, performed the land planning and landscape architecture for UW Health’s new East Campus Clinic site. The vision for the site focuses on a sweeping public open space in the front yard and a quiet, patient-centric, space in the backyard. Each is filled with activities, green spaces, and programmable areas appropriate to its users (whether patients or community members), all infused with sustainable best practices and surrounded by a natural environment that includes wetlands, woods, and prairie landscapes.

Presidium Group engaged HDG to provide Schematic Design and Design Development for this multi-family community in the suburbs of Austin, Texas. This mid-rise, six-story community includes structured parking, rain gardens throughout the design (for stormwater management), and lush landscaping in the two courtyards. One of these courtyards is an amenity courtyard with a pool, an outdoor living room, and an outdoor lounge area. The other courtyard is a passive courtyard with outdoor seating, a hammock garden, and an outdoor farmstyle table.

Hitchcock Design Group assisted the office of Louis Joyner to design an addition to the Elwood Staffing corporate headquarters in Columbus, Indiana. The new design required transitioning a well-established, residentially-scaled landscape into one with strong geometry and modern materials to support the new building. Some of the plant species used in the original design were incorporated to provide a connection between the old and the new. The owners of Elwood Staffing wished to create a courtyard space for staff to enjoy during lunch or periodic breaks throughout the day. Three water features representing the three Elwood brothers currently leading the company were incorporated into the courtyard design to help soften and cool the south facing courtyard, and provide white noise against the adjacent traffic.

Hitchcock Design Group was retained to prepare Schematic Design for Michigan City’s new Civic Plaza. The plaza is a critical component of the ongoing revitalization of downtown. Paying homage to the city’s rich industrial and artistic history through design elements, the space builds on Michigan City’s new marketing campaign of Create, Play, and Repeat developed by Roger Brooks International. A new multi-purpose building is being developed that will house restrooms, concessions, kitchen, multi-use rooms, storage, and back of the house for a new outdoor performance stage. A central space will be used for flexible programmed events throughout the year including a temporary surface for winter activities. A unique playground, interactive fountain, and public art piece by world renowned artist, Jen Lewin, will also be included. The team also worked closely with Destination Rapid City to develop a Management and Operations Plan to support the plaza as a financially-stable, self-sustaining entity.

The Wesmont is a 188-unit multi-family apartment complex in the hot 16th & Monon corridor of Indianapolis. The site was formerly occupied by an Indianapolis Public Schools maintenance facility and prior to that, the Polk Sanitary Milk Company. The project is named for Wes Montgomery, jazz guitar legend and Indianapolis native, who once worked at the Polk Factory. HDG provided landscape architectural services including site landscaping and design of the outdoor amenity area, which provides a pool, outdoor grilling areas, and a dog park. Several existing buildings were re-purposed for office use. HDG’s design palette for the exterior spaces aimed to create a cohesive vocabulary between the character of the historic buildings and the contemporary vibe of the new buildings.

Hitchcock Design Group team collaborated with the Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance and the Chicago Park District to redesign the existing indoor children’s garden and create a more interactive experience with nature and plants. The design process was facilitated through visioning workshops and several meetings with the project team. Play structures in the garden were designed to invite children to explore as researchers and scientists. They begin their expedition at a base camp for orientation and launch into the garden to explore all facets of this tropical environment from beneath the surface and above the canopy with the goal of making visitors more aware of plants and their relationships to us.

As part of the design team, Hitchcock Design Group was retained by Marquette Companies for the site plan and landscape improvements for this luxury 200-apartment complex. Located in the center of downtown Lisle, the complex is adjacent to the train station to provide residents with easy access to public transportation. The redevelopment features mixed-use retail on the ground floor. Additional amenities for this $40 million project include a plaza, courtyards, and rooftop gardens.

The City of North Vernon engaged Hitchcock Design Group to further develop a design concept that was created by a local community group, prepare construction documents, assist with bidding and provide construction phase services for a new city park. The goal of this park was to provide programmable open space to the community and amenities including an outdoor amphitheater, two miles of paved trails, a playground focused on accessibility, adult exercise area, park shelters, and restroom building. Hitchcock Design Group worked very closely with the community group to help them realize their vision for a new community park.

Park #512 (Walsh Park Expansion) is located in Bucktown at the eastern trailhead of The 606, a heavily trafficked, world-class elevated trail and park that connects Humbolt Park and Bucktown. The design program includes a dynamic adventure play environment, spray feature, outdoor fitness equipment, gathering space, pathways, landscape, and lighting improvements. The expansion builds on the aesthetics of The 606 while integrating the unique qualities of the site and character of the surrounding community. This was a great opportunity to develop a familyfriendly environment that is engaging, attractive, safe, and accessible for children and families of all abilities. Construction was financed in part through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) Grant Program.

28 Mile Vodka Company engaged AltusWorks to lead the architectural rehabilitation of an existing two-story building in downtown Highwood to transform it into a new distillery, tasting room, bar, retail, and street side cafe. Hitchcock Design Group was engaged to design and document the street side cafĂŠ. During construction, the owner purchased the building next door and decided to expand. Hitchcock Design Group was re-engaged by the owner to prepare schematic design drawings for a new outdoor courtyard in place of the cafe. The outdoor courtyard complements the interior design of the distillery and includes a new vestibule, various types of outdoor seating, a stage, fountains, fireplace, graphic art, a pergola, and unique lighting throughout the space. The clients have national aspirations for expanding their unique distillations while maintaining a strong foothold in the local community. The new nineteen-foot glass building facade of main building provides a strong street presence and gives visitors great views into the distillery. The outdoor courtyard brings the tasting experience into the streetscape, adding to the vibrancy of downtown Highwood.

Anderson Library Plaza is the heart of the Indiana University Northwest campus. The plaza serves as a hub around which all other campus buildings can be accessed. The existing space consisted of a dated 1970’s sunken plaza and an uninviting fountain which had fallen into disrepair and needed significant upgrades to serve modern students. Hitchcock Design Group re-imagined the space as a universally accessible plaza with a performance stage and a variety of seating for intimate use or for large gatherings. By altering the site grading, the sunken plaza became a grade-level space; many stairs were removed and accessible ramps added, opening up the north side of the plaza. New LED lighting and charging stations were added throughout to encourage use of the plaza as an extension of the library. The new plaza design worked around two large raised planters, giving the plaza new life while still giving a nod to its past.

A team led by Hitchcock Design Group worked with Truman State University to design Phase I of this project, replacing existing brick paths in a core area of campus. The design improves pedestrian circulation, provides outdoor seating areas, addresses bike parking needs, updates lighting and other utilities, reduces the amount of impervious paving, and improves the appearance of the landscape. During Phase II, the team renovated the focal point water feature adding programmable LED lights and increasing accessibility. The team also created a new events lawn space adjacent to the Student Union.

Opened in 1926, Phil’s Beach was the first privately-owned “fee” beach resort with recreational facilities located on Bang’s Lake in Wauconda. Aquatic amenities included the “Dizzy Lizzy,” a 30-foot J-slide and floating rafts that attracted families and tourists. The beach was also featured in several scenes from “The Blues Brothers” film. Privately-owned and operated until 1989, the beach was then closed to the public. The Wauconda Park District purchased the land in 2016 for redevelopment with the goal of returning the site to a public beachfront. Hitchcock Design Group was retained by the Park District to prepare a long-term vision for the future development of the beach. After conducting workshops and stakeholder interviews, the team prepared a final design that addressed future fiscal planning and capital improvements. These improvements include a concessions building, bath house, picnic pavilion, open lawn areas, splash pad, expansive boardwalk, beachfront, and inflatable water play features. The proposed structures will mimic the architecture of the existing historic buildings.

The I-355 bridge at 159th Street is a pivotal entry into Lockport and a primary access point for residents and visitors. The existing bridge at this site is a simple, standard beam structure with minor aesthetic improvements that are consistent with other bridges in the overall I-355 corridor but not specific to Lockport. Hitchcock Design Group prepared a series of preliminary concepts to study a wide range of possible improvement types at varying levels of investment, including how the structure could look at night with enhanced lighting elements. These concepts helped identify the priority improvements that balanced cost and aesthetics and reinforced the brand.

Dunbar Park is located in Chicago’s south side Douglas Community. Named after Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906), one of the nation’s first critically-acclaimed African American authors, the park features baseball diamonds, athletic fields, picnic groves, tennis courts, running track, batting cage, playground, interactive water feature, and reading garden. Hitchcock Design Group led a team to renovate the heavily-programmed athletic field and running track at the North end of the park. Improvements include a combination of artificial turf field striped for soccer and football, replacement of the existing polyurethane track surface, improved spectator seating, and landscape improvements.

The SMCA Campus Master Plan is purposed to enhance the campus in a manner that will improve the doctor, staff, and patient experience. The plan reviews the existing conditions, proposes a wayfinding master plan, and provides recommendations for future capital improvements. The SMCA’s guiding principles to wellness are centered around “utilizing best practices in healthcare to modernize and improve the visitor, doctor, and staff experience”. To accomplish this, the team came up with numerous improvements SMCA could make. A few of these improvements are: •

As part of the second phase of the Greenfield Gateway, which consists of the planting design at the intersection of I-70 and SR-9 and the landscape beautification associated with proposed improvements to the SR-9 corridor. HDG was asked to take a further look at future opportunities for growth, development, aesthetic enhancement, and community interaction along SR9 Corridor. The master plan represents all the ideas that came out of the workshop sessions with the stakeholders and community members. Opportunities for greatest impact along the Corridor can be focused into three main areas – Gateway, Threshold, and Linear Park. Individual aspects of the master plan within these three areas can be reused throughout the Corridor and the greater community to create a cohesive vision that invites residents, visitors, and passersby into the City of Greenfield.

Building on the momentum from the first phase, the Play for All Foundation and the Wheaton Park District engaged Hitchcock Design Group to help them envision a one-of-a-kind treehouse play environment destination. Children, families, and caregivers of all ages and abilities will enjoy this unique elevated experience with a special focus on inclusive play, barrier free play, and providing opportunities for those with sensory-related disabilities. Woven into an existing woodland setting, families will have opportunities to learn about the flora and fauna of the area through interactive layering, exhibits, signs, and activities that accompany the climb to the eleven-foot-high naturalized treehouse family room, kitchen, and kids room complete with slides, nets, tunnels, telescopes, hammocks, furniture, and natural manipulative play elements. These events will be wrapped into a robust garden setting, offering a diverse collection of activities from quiet and reflective to social and cooperative. The first phase will bring families of all ages and abilities into the trees.

Velocity Crossing is a new 316-acre mixed-use master plan of retail, residential, hospitality, corporate and medical office, light industrial facilities, arts, and entertainment. The site is located on the Southwest section of Austin, near the airport, and will be connected by light rail to the airport and downtown Austin in 2020. The design incorporates the natural setting and threads it through the project to connect the natural systems with the new-planned social activity to give this development an urban environment despite the fact that it is planned outside the existing city center.

The HDG team was engaged by American Family Insurance to develop a master plan for underutilized parcels of land within The American Center. The end result was a new District Master Plan to position the property in a way that re-imagines the corporate office park into a walkable, dense business community focused on a highly-programmed green space that will become the focal point for the remainder of the campus. In addition to the overall master plan, the design team created conceptual designs for the green space and has refined TAC’s tightly controlled design guidelines to reflect best practices in sustainability, landscape, architecture, and site planning. Even before the conclusion of the master planning process, developers and institutional partners have taken notice of the change, with proposals for new buildings around the Green and a new medical campus that will serve as the northern gateway into the District.

Working closely with park and conference center representatives, Hitchcock Design Group developed a plan to accentuate the best characteristics of this unusual, magnificent natural asset: the 1,500-acre Robert Allerton Park. By concentrating on the 90-acre park core, Hitchcock Design Group was able to accommodate the increasing and sometimes conflicting requirements of park patrons, while allowing for full access to educational and recreational facilities. Specific recommendations for this historically-significant property included the refinement of existing facilities, practical and aesthetic improvements to both pedestrian and vehicular circulation patterns, upgraded lighting, and centralization of maintenance facilities.

Located in the City of Champaign’s Campustown District, Core Spaces’ newest hub development includes a mix of commercial, office, and residential apartments that cater to the lifestyle of the University of Illinois student population. The streetscape improvements follow the City’s design guidelines and include generous sidewalks with raised planters, seat walls, bike racks, and other furnishings. As a one-way street eastbound, Daniel Street was modified to include a counter-flow bike lane to accommodate the high volume of bicycle traffic between the adjacent university campus and campustown district. The development also includes a rooftop amenity deck and green roof improvements.

Perry Farm Playground is a farm-themed destination play space in the heart of Perry Farm Park, Bourbonnais Township Park District’s premier community park. Bourbonnais Township Park District sought out Hitchcock Design Group to help envision a creative play space that embraces the historic farm setting of Perry Farm where children can learn through play. Unique play experiences such as the corn cob and hay bale climbers, group disc swing, tractor play, farm stand, and nostalgic tire swing spark the curiosity of all ages. An expression swing promotes parent-child interactions while the swing structure mimics large irrigators moving through the crop fields. The poured-in-place rubber play surfacing is patterned after agricultural crop patterns. Corn rows and a quilt-like crop pattern emerge from the play surfacing and include a meandering stream to tie the play spaces together. Pretend and imaginative play opportunities abound with farm animals for children to talk to and invent their own stories. The intergenerational, inclusive play space fosters an environment where farming generations from the community can come together and share stories about the rich history and culture of their community.

The City of Countryside desired to create a welcoming civic community space at their new City Hall and Police Department facility. Working closely with the architect and civil engineer, Hitchcock Design Group was responsible for the site landscape design including design of the pedestrian plaza spaces and signage. HDG developed an inviting landscape, including a public entry plaza that can be used for community events. The design and materials compliment the prairie style building architecture and include flexible furnishings and amenities. Along with other sustainable design components, this project includes a green roof and rooftop gathering space. The City is pursuing LEED Gold certification for the project.

Riverside Center for Imaginative Learning collaborated with Hitchcock Design Group to envision and create a Master Plan to guide future improvements that foster creativity and imaginative learning at their 22-acre campus. Located south of Big Rock, Illinois on the shores of the Big Rock Creek, the Riverside Center provides meaningful experiences that blend the site’s natural and historical elements with the Center’s rich mission. Riverside’s Big Rock Land is an opportunity to build something new, a land that will inspire a new generation of boys to become men of creativity, courage, and faith. The Riverside Center for Imaginative Learning Master Plan builds on the existing Riverside curriculum and site elements such as the two ponds, access to the Big Rock Creek, a forest with several magnificent old-growth trees, and the historic farmhouse. Nine outdoor spaces were designed, and each is layered with allusions to classic stories, life experiences, and symbology, handpicked for the meaningful lessons and inspirations they embody. Proposed improvements include signature landscapes with native plantings, expansive views, clear water, and cozy lodges. Further adventure can be found at each destination with naturebased play opportunities, close-up access to nature, zip lining, boating, archery, horseback riding, and countless other activities. Areas for relaxation and contemplation also exist within woodland shelter, oversized nests and hammocks, a hobbit hole, a rustic campsite, and a new lodge building. Gatherings and celebrations of community are encouraged throughout the center on expansive observation decks, outdoor kitchens and dining areas, and throughout the buildings and entry plaza at the Center’s heart.

The Hitchcock Design Group team was charged with finding the potential in this two-owner parcel. A team made up of representatives from the Park District and the Village worked collaboratively to help develop a vision that would offer recreation amenities for all throughout the year while providing opportunities for festivals and events of varying sizes that will help spur activity in this important open space. The new park will be a diverse collection of active and passive recreation elements wrapped in a gardenesque setting that will make create a regional stormwater collection system that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
