Creative Brides now has an award winning blog and supplier directory. Yes that’s correct, we won two awards recently and we’re really chuffed! I took Mr CB with me to the National UK Blog Awards 2014 which were held at The Grange Hotel, St Pauls London on 25th April 2014. story of my dress Story Of My Dress was created to offer Brides-to-be something a little different and unique – a one-off dress that is breathtaking but affordable, from the fluid silhouette of the 1930s to the relaxed whimsical style of the 1970s. Each dress secretly has its own story, some we are able to tell and some we can only imagine. Their timeless style and current love for vintage means these dresses are ready and waiting to start a new story with their new bride. Currently SOMD visits vintage wedding fairs across the country offering the chance to try on and purchase your dress there and then. Story Of My Dress will be exhibiting at our Vintage & Unique Wedding Fair, Scotney Castle on Sunday 28th September, and the Vintage Wedding Village, Bluewater on the 7th – 19th October 2014.

Let’s Get Naked! ‘Naked’ or ‘un-iced’ wedding cakes certainly took off last year and are still proving to be extremely popular this summer too – they lend themselves so well to any setting but more particularly the rustic, relaxed and unfussy feel of a marquee, barn or village hall setting where they can be set on a beautiful decorated tree trunk. Although simplistic and informal, I’ve never seen two the same. Their decoration, whether flowers or fruit or both, with or without a dusting of sugar or a thin, subtle layer of soft buttercream, makes them truly stand out and make a statement at a wedding. As soon as you set eyes on the finished cake, you just want to dive in to its scrumptious freshness! The tiers can be any flavour you like, feel free to mix it up – or just go with strawberries and cream. Ensure that your cakemaker is happy to create this for you – it should be freshly baked and moist. Some clients have been concerned that the cake will be ‘stale’ by the time it is served. This certainly shouldn’t be the case if your cake designer has freshly baked the cake and stored it correctly prior to it being set up – it should be as fresh as possible. Consider too the time of year and venue – for example it wouldn’t be appropriate to set up a fresh strawberries and cream naked cake in a marquee at the height of summer at 9.00am for a 3.00pm wedding. Again, something your cake designer will advise you on. I always liaise directly with florists regarding the flowers to be used – just be aware of any that may be toxic and should not be used, and that stems are wrapped where they come in contact with the sponge. Your cake should still have the correct internal support that a traditional cake would have, so check with your cake designer how they will be stacking and supporting it internally – the last thing you want in a warm venue is your cake listing like the Leaning Tower of Pisa because it hasn’t been constructed properly! They are a really delicious and enticing alternative to the more formal, traditional style wedding cake and always popular.

Floral Crown... Step one: Measure around your head leaving about two inches at the back, then cut your wire to this length using the wire cutters
Step two: Take two pieces of ribbon and weave each one on to the ends of the wire Step three: Using the glue gun, carefully glue the ribbon and fold in two (make sure you don’t burn your fingers!) – repeat with the other side Step four: To reinforce the join between the wire and ribbon, wind the thinner wire around – repeat with the other side Step five: Select your flowers to complete the crown and gently pull off the flower heads from their stems. If the flower petals come part, simply glue gun these back together Step six: Using the felt square, cut two small circles per flower head and glue gun one to the back of each flower Step seven: Taking your wire band, simply glue gun on to the wire and use the other felt circle to sandwich the wire between Step eight: Build your design by layering the flowers or adding fake berries or leaves from the stems of the flowers
What you need All available from your local craft supplier: Fake flowers (different textures and types of flowers work well) Felt squares Green garden/florist wire – thin and thick (you need to be able to bend this wire with your fingers) Ribbon/lace with detail or pattern holes Tools of the trade Scissors, glue gun, wire cutters, table protector

Fresh from the Florist
I met the lovely Lara Haynes who owns Darling and Wild the other day and she showed me around her quirky florist studio in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. It’s full of lots of floral inspiration from vintage crates that are home to a beautiful collection of vases, to rustic mounted mirrors and of course an array of stunning flowers that adorn the pots and walls around Lara’s studio. Lara has been has been working with flowers since 2004 and has a true love for creating pretty displays. I just love how she uses natural materials such as moss, lichen, twigs and seeds to create texture and interest in her work. Clair x

More than a feeling... With so many things to consider when planning your big day, it is easy to get swept along in all of the logistics, the seating plans, the picking of your food and affixing stamps to invites, that you can get lost in all of your plans. That was certainly true when we got married back in 2007 and I think a lot has changed with weddings since then. One of my hindsight learnings was that I didn’t step back from planning mode early enough before our wedding and didn’t stop and think about how I wanted to feel on our day. One thing I always ask my couples is how they want to feel on their day and how they’d like their photography to fit around that. I think putting how you’d like to feel first will help with planning your timeline, making sure each part of your day has time for you to enjoy time with each other and all of your loved ones. I would say I am an emotional photographer – what I mean by that is that my heart flutters when I see a natural energy
between two people – those little glances, those moments of stillness, an authentic connection – and this is where the magic happens in creating really soft, natural, elegant images. I like to think that grabbing moments throughout the day for your photos allows you to press pause on your day, really see each other, reflect on how you feel in that moment and get excited about the next part of your day. So, in all of the eclectic craziness that planning your wedding brings, I’d encourage you to bring each decision back to how you want to feel, have the courage to make decisions that will be true to your vision and make sure you choose a fabulous team of suppliers who are committed to connecting with you to make sure your day gives you all of the fizz and excitement that you’ve dreamed of. Engagement Shoot.
22
Ah Paris! Infamously dubbed the city of love, the French capital certainly boasts a stylish backdrop where people can fall as much in love with each other as the streets themselves. This spring, the CB team were lucky enough to experience the magic first hand, by hosting a very special engagement shoot for our lucky prize winners Danielle & Jason across the channel, together with Rebecca Douglas Photography, Florist in the Forest, Whippy Weddings and Eurostar. Now often part of wedding photography packages, engagement shoots are a great way to get to know your photographer, banish any photo fears or shyness and get some professional, candid snaps of you both ahead of the big day. I mean, how often do you a get chance to do that?
23
Engagement Shoot.
24
The Eurostar only takes 2 hours, 15 minutes from London St Pancras International, meaning you can travel carefree and arrive almost as quickly as you can say ‘champagne’! And with tickets from £69 return, it really is a very affordable way to be able to soak up the heady mix of elegant architecture and modern art nouveau in a day. C’est parfait! Once you arrive, leisurely meandering is actively encouraged and you could easily watch the Parisienne world go by. But with lots to see, it’s time to explore. There are of course, the musts; The Eiffel Tower, a symbol so synonymous with love, you simply must experience the decadence of this 125 year old structure. For our shoot, we found nearby parkland where we could capture interesting cropped angles and contrast the iron lattice to the soft sunlight breaking through the foliage. Next, a trip along the River Seine with 37 bridges in Paris alone, provides loads of spots to capture a picturesque peck on the cheek as the sun glistens above. For the ultimate romantics, there’s the lovers locks at the Pont des Arts and many of the other footbridges across the Seine. Here, couples from all around the world have declared their undying love for each other by initialling their padlock, fastening it to the
bridge and then throwing the key into the river. The sea of colours is certainly a sight to experience. But if you’d prefer something a little more alternative to the tourist hotspots, Paris doesn’t disappoint. There’s lots of unique spaces to discover, during our day, we came across lots of expressive wall arts, colourful murals and contemporary backstreet rues, great for capturing the French famed Je ne sais quoi. With the weather on our side, Paris simply gleamed for us, creating we think, a captivating scenery away from the regularity of home to relax and spend time with your partner, which can all be beautifully captured by your wedding photographer as an engagement shoot. Twig jam jars...
1
Clean off the jam jar labels by soaking them in warm soapy water. While these are soaking, go for a lovely walk and find sticks that have fallen on the floor. Ideally they need to be as straight as possible.
2 Cut your twigs to the desired size (a little taller than your jam jar), using the garden secateurs. Carefully glue these on using the glue gun, you will need to glue in two places or where required. Please be aware that this can get very hot!
3 Using the rustic garden string, you can add extra detail and wrap around your twigs. To hide any glue blobs, you could wrap the rustic garden string around the top and bottom of the jars.
What you need All available from your local craft supplier: Jam jars (different sizes) Rustic garden string Glue gun Tea lights Garden secateurs Twigs from the garden
Top tip... Don’t use tall jam jars, as you won’t be able to light your tea lights easily on the day. 29
A woodland wedding in the village hall teamed with handmade personal touches… Caroline: “The planning and preparation was really hard work, but it was completely worth it. All the memories of our special day celebrating with our friends and family never fail to make me smile. To have such an amazing day, and being finally married to the man I love was the best thing ever!”
How did you meet? We actually met via an online dating website! I think we were both using the site as more of a way to expand our social circle, than find romance. But, we hit it off via email and text, and as soon as we had our (rather drunken) first date, we knew it was love! Tell us about your big day? To be honest, we both only remember snippets of the day! It’s odd what stands out though. Sam: for me it was things like driving to the registry office, windows down and music blasting in the sunshine. Caroline: for me it was things like how happy all of our friends were for us, and how much love and happiness we both felt on the day. We do both remember the great music and food though!
30
What was your wedding theme? Woodland. Originally, we’d planned to get married at a wonderful venue where we’d have to able to get married in a beautiful forest glade. For a number of reasons, we had to move to a different location,
but we were so keen on the woodland setting, that we decided to bring the outside in! Is there anything you made for your wedding? We made pretty much everything actually. Sam designed the website, the video ‘Save the Date’ and the invitations. We both came up with the basis of the reception decorations, and a number of very helpful friends helped us decorate the venue the day before the wedding. Caroline made all of the smaller decorations herself, from the place settings to the flower arrangements. There were a number of other DIY handmade items from other friends weddings that were loaned for our big day. What were your best bits? Again, I think it comes back to the fantastic music, and the amazing food. At the end of the day, we love each other, and we just wanted to be together with all of our friends, in a beautiful, relaxed environment where we could eat, drink and have a damn good time!

NEON.WEDDING.STYLING. So, who knew that neon would be making a comeback, and even be showing its shiny, glowing face in the world of weddings!? I for one, am a big fan of it and I have been known to drop the ‘neon-bomb’ into a photoshoot or two in this last year! If you are among the brave and the bold and would like to add a spot of neon to your wedding styling then my best advice would be to do just that – a spot.
You can add neon highlights with the decorations, the lighting and the finishing touches throughout your day. Right from the get-go you can let your guests into your secret neon addiction with the stationery. Whether it be with full neon colour-blocking or just a hint, with a neon sticker seal to the envelopes.

Questions & Answers Emily Braithwaite: Baylily Bell Tents 07745 355386 • emily@baylilybelltents.co.uk
1. Tell us a bit about Baylily Bell Tents? Baylily Bell Tents is a glamping company based in Southampton which hires out bell tents for special occasions. We are specialists in providing guest village accommodation for larger groups. We cover all of Hampshire and surrounding counties. Our range of coloured tents really do set us apart from other companies – they look stunning when put together! 2. How did you start the company? My husband and I both have a background in working in the outdoors and have had years of camping practise (stemming from both of us being involved with Scouts from a young age!). Our own wedding in 2012 was held in a field-overlooking Swanage Bay and the Isle of Wight, most of our guests camped with us for the weekend. We had the best time ever with our family and friends and from there Baylily Bell Tents was born! 3. What are your tents used for? There is no end to the options our customers have with our tents, and we are always willing to consider ideas brought to the table. Our most popular option is our guest village accommodation for weddings. We provide everything you need for a comfortable stay with no hassle, which includes us taking care of guest bookings, payments, sleeping plans and bespoke signage – leaving you to relax with a few less things to worry about. Our bridal suite is also a really popular option among couples and comes with a full metal bed, real mattress and all of the trimmings. We also offer a range of hen/stag do tent options and are always happy to discuss your requirements. We have had beauticians, afternoon teas, clairvoyants, cocktail-making workshops in our tents – you name it, we will try to accommodate it! Another favourite addition to weddings is the kids play tent option that keeps the little ones entertained while the speeches are happening! 4. How many people can sleep in a tent? Each of our tents sleep up to six guests comfortably on airbeds and prices start at £150 per tent. When you consider the cost of taxis and hotels, this works out to be a really affordable and fun way of accommodating your family and friends! 5. Anything else you would like to say? As well as providing tents, Baylily Bells are also able to provide a range of extra hire items for your big day. Outdoor lighting packs, prop hire and furniture to name but a few things on the list. We are also branching out into outdoor event management so do get in contact if you would like an informal chat with the team about your outdoor wedding! 38

We talk to Amelia Barnes of Miss Vintage Wedding Affair about ‘How Attending a Good Wedding Fairs Can Really Help You Make Your Wedding Fit You!’ Why did you first set up Miss Vintage Wedding Affair? When first setting up Miss Vintage Wedding Affair in 2011, I wanted to provide something to Brides that couldn’t just be ordered off the internet or bought off the peg. Much of what was offered to me for my own wedding was mass produced with high pressure sales techniques and lacking in the craftsmanship I was after. In the end, I made everything myself! Planning a wedding had to be made easier. So, I set about curating a team of people that good help like-minded Brides find their perfect suppliers.
Can you suggest ways in which Brides might get the most out of a wedding fair? • Create a wedding email account. This is perfect if you don’t want to give out all your details to everyone you meet, with the fear of being on their mailing list forever! • Check out the fair website before you go. See who will be there and who you really want to talk to. • Go early! Most fairs start at 11am. Take your time, you will want to make the most of the day. Wear comfortable clothes, light make-up and take your best friend! • If you’re trying on dresses take a suitable pair of dressy shoes. You get to meet and chat to people that you would just never click with if you were searching online. It used to be the case • Enter competitions! This is when your new email address that wedding fairs were cringe-fests staffed by ladies dressed will come in handy. You have really good odds of winning, in static polyester suits trying to flog you naff chair covers and some of the prizes on offer will save you a fortune! (no offense, I’m just not a fan!). These still exist, but you will • Use the discounts. Many exhibitors offer them on the day and be happy to hear that there is a bridal revolution for couples if you quote that you spoke to them at the fair after the event. who want to create a wedding day to reflect them in a uniquely • Have a cup of tea and something to eat! This wedding personal way! You just have to pick the right fair to attend. planning is exciting stuff, but you need to keep fuelled. That’s what the tearoom is for! • Ask for advice. The biggest event most people have ever planned is a birthday party. The exhibitors on-hand have years of experience. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. They will offer advice freely as they want you to be happy with the service they provide. Be clear about your budget and what you would like. And if you don’t know, ask what options there are and if you can see images of their previous work! • Enjoy it! There are so many amazing creative people to talk to that you are bound to find suppliers that are sympathetic to your vision.

Editor’s pick... Grays is a family-owned and run boutique bed & breakfast in a quiet, convenient location in Bath. Set in a large, Victorian villa on the southern slopes of the City, Grays gives spectacular views over Bath. Their aim is to offer exceptional accommodation and service, to make guests feel like they are ‘home from home’ and to make a stay in Bath one to remember. Grays provided us with a warm welcome after our two hour drive, with bubbles to drink on arrival, and bubbles to soak into in our stylish yet spacious en-suite room. Every detail was considered, which gave us an amazing base to return to after exploring the City. We started our days with a breakfast to die for – you must try the Eggs Benedict and fresh fruit juices!

Retreat to Tahiti...
The islands of Tahiti are a natural 24-hour spa. The scent of plumeria, ginger and tiare – Tahiti’s national flower – drift through the air creating beautiful aromas. The shallow, crystal-clear lagoons and tropical afternoon rains are invigorating. Even before the first man-made spa was built, Polynesians were accustomed to being rejuvenated by a combination of natural elements. Today, Tahiti offers a unique array of world-class spas that will relax and re-energise. The Deep Ocean Spa by Algotherm, at the InterContinental Resort and Thalasso Spa Bora Bora – is the world’s first spa to use deep sea water minerals in its therapy treatments. Thanks to the bathymetry of the surrounding ocean, the hotel is able to pump in mineral-rich sea water from a depth of over 3,000 feet, which is then reheated for the spa. Past volcanic activity of the area has infused the water with minerals and vitamins that give it revitalising and restorative properties. Among the treatments available are such indulgent names as ‘Relaxing Pearl Rain Massage’ and ‘Marine Deep Sea Hydromassage Bath with Chromatherapy’. www.ihg.com/intercontinental
With its soaring 100-foot ceiling, The Spa at the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora is balanced by the powerful rhythms of the Pacific Ocean and the secluded tranquillity of the island’s lagoon and features open-air treatment decks amid the kahaia trees. Raised walkways, suspended above a plantation of pandanus trees, lead to the Spa’s seven airconditioned treatment rooms. A spacious couples’ suite with glass floor suspended above the lagoon’s pristine waters provides absolute privacy over the tranquil lagoon. Guests can also combine their chosen treatment with the natural healing energy of Bora Bora’s climate in one of two open-air treatment pavilions, nestled deep within the tropical grove. Other amenities within the Spa include sensory steam rooms, whirlpools with both ocean and lagoon views, a fitness centre looking out over the ocean and a secluded, open air overwater yoga deck. A Signature Spa Ritual is ‘KAHAIA HAVEN’ – a skin-smoothing body treatment begins with cleansing using naturally exfoliating kahaia body scrub, legendary Tahitian black pearl powder and native fragrant vanilla. Once the skin is prepared, an exquisite massage of choice is given. This experience concludes with a holistic and de-stressing Water and Light express facial. www.fourseasons.com/borabora/spa
The Hélène Spa at the InterContinental Moorea Resort and Spa is famous for treatments based on Polynesian techniques. Exotic treatments include an outdoor rain shower, a full-body wrap in banana leaves (with a selection of clay, papaya or pineapple emollients) and a dual massage treatment to name a few. www.ihg.com/intercontinental/hotels/gb/en/moorea /mozpf/hoteldetail

At the Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort & Spa, the Hina Spa boasts panoramic views of the lagoon. The hilltop spa enjoys a 360-degree view of Bora Bora’s famed Mount Otemanu on one side and the island of Taha’a in the distance. The spa’s menu features locally inspired services such as the ‘Coconut Milk Bath’ – completely flowered with Polynesian flowers perfectly adapted after a day in the sun to moisturise and leave a wonderful glow on the skin. Another signature treatment is ‘Hydrating Black Pearl Facial’ – A paraben-free deeply hydrating facial made of Tahitian black pearls, adapted for dry or dehydrated skin, used with massage techniques that stimulate cell regeneration giving the face a healthy glow. www3.hilton.com/en/hotels/frenchpolynesia/hilton-bora-bora-nui-resort-and-spa-PPTBNHI The Manea Spas, the flagship spa brand for SPM Hotels, Resorts and Spas – are located at properties on Taha’a, Tikehau, Manihi, Moorea, and Bora Bora. The spas are designed to reflect the spirit of Taurumi, the Tahitian word for massage and for a philosophy that emphasises healthy living. All-natural products are used in treatments, such as sandalwood, tiare, ylang ylang, and monoi. The Manea Spa at the Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort is built on stilts above a small lake in the resort’s lush gardens. At the Manea Spa of the Moorea Pearl Resort & Spa the signature treatment is the ‘RUMIAVAI’ – this unique Manea Spa signature massage is delivered in a dedicated spa pool. Your body, floating on the water, is then smoothly or firmly massaged and stretched in ways no other land massage could possibly offer, releasing all nervous tension and freeing your body in water. A caring and nourishing experience. www.spmhotels.com
The Spa Miri Miri at the St. Regis Bora Bora Resort, is the only spa in Tahiti to occupy its own private island. As a member of The Starwood Spa Collection, Spa Miri Miri is inspired by The Seven Pillars of Well-Being: Beauty, Harmony, Aqua, Vitality, Life Balance, Nature and Nutrition. The Spa Miri Miri features Tahitian and Pacific Rim treatments with highlights including the ‘Coffee Volcanic Foot Scrub’ and the ‘Crushed Pearl Treatment’ administered in seven elegant private suites. The spa also houses a nail and hair salon, yoga deck and fitness centre. www.stregisborabora.com
Tahiti fact file
Rurutu in the Austral Islands is known as ‘The Island of the Whales’ due to the fact that its hospitable waters offer the perfect breeding area for humpback whales. It is even possible to swim with them. Tahiti has been the location for a number of films. The word ‘tattoo’ & ‘taboo’ originates from Polynesia and are two of the few words that have worked their way into the English language.
