“Our flowers are grown in a sheltered paddock on an arable farm close to the picturesque village of Hellingly. We grow a wide range of traditional cottage garden flowers such as fragrant Sweet Peas and Lavender, Dahlias, Sunflowers and a selection of spring bulbs for early season colour. These lovely flowers are often not available through florists and supermarkets, many of which have to import the bulk of their stock, since they often don't travel well or simply aren't grown on a large scale. We can therefore produce arrangements that are very individual, with a 'fresh from the garden' look. An added bonus is the wonderful fragrance that many of our flowers and herbs have. www.sussexcuttinggarden.co.uk

Questions & Answers How did you become wedding planners? We (Joanne and Emma) worked together in corporate events for years, and often planned events at short notice and to very tight budgets. But when it came to organising a wedding there seemed to be an invisible and exhausting rulebook to follow. We started the company to help couples, whatever their budget, find their own wedding style and plan their big day in a fun, unique and less stressful way. What services do you offer? We aim to be an extra pair of hands helping with anything from finding suppliers to being an experienced sounding board for ideas and inspiration. We can do as much or as little as couples need and always leave them with options to choose from so they can decide what works best for them. Our most popular packages include ‘Dolly Drama but Calmer’ where we assist in the lead up to the wedding with final preparations and ‘Dolly-on-the-Day’ where we’re there on the big day to bring all the plans together and make sure everything runs smoothly. We also offer workshops which give Brides insider hints and tips on how to plan their big day. Plus we’ve just launched a new DIY Wedding Workshop which is all about managing a DIY wedding. It’s packed full of crafty ideas where you can learn how to make items such as stationery, decorations, favours and lots more. What’s the best part of being a wedding planner? Many people think that wedding planners are only for celebrities and don’t consider using one. So it’s really rewarding when you can literally see the relief show on our couples faces when they know we can help them and save money along the way. It’s lovely when they really begin to enjoy the planning process and have fun instead of being completely stressed and overwhelmed. It’s then that we know we’ve done our job.
22
Tell us about your workspace? We have a home-based office where we both work when not on the road. It’s getting more and more crammed with candlesticks, easels, pom poms, vases and all sorts of styling items so we’ll have to find somewhere bigger for our collection pretty soon! What’s next on your to-do list? There’s usually a completely varied selection of jobs to do. This week we are planning concepts for a styling job, visiting a possible new venue, writing some blog posts and making final preparations with a couple getting married in a few weeks. Oh and trying to fix the printer - whacking it no longer seems to do the trick!

What do you do when not planning weddings? No rest for the wicked as usually we’re running around after our kids! Although we do like a good catch up over Britain & Irelands Next Top Model and Nashville. We’re totally addicted and at least it stops us talking about weddings for once! What are your top wedding planning tips? Communication from the outset between Bride & Groom is essential. Discuss honestly what you both want and make sure you choose a key element of the day that is important to each of you. Personalise your wedding by thinking about what makes you YOU. Include things you love and find ways to bring them into your day. This will help you create your unique style and you won’t be as sidetracked by other ideas. Once you have agreed on your style draw up a mood board on Pinterest. It’s great for bringing all those ideas together and then organising them into your own ‘wedding style guide’. Draw up your guest list early on and work out a cost per head based on your budget. Check this with potential venues before you go for a visit and be honest with them about your budget. You don’t want to fall in love with somewhere that you simply can’t afford but equally the venue might be willing to negotiate on price for dates that are in lesser demand. Organising a wedding is not something you do every day, so be prepared for it to get stressful. Give yourself set times to work on the wedding with a small to-do list of no more than three items each week. Feel the stress lift as you tick them off! Visualising your wedding day through the eyes of your guests can really help. Run through their experience from when they arrive to when they leave. What will they notice and how will they feel? It will certainly help you plan your day and improve your guest experience too.
