Editor’s s Rambling Welcome to the Spring/Summer 2015 edition of Creative Brides Magazine. Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to for picking up our magazine - I really hope you like it.

We love hearing about your wedding plans and what you think about Creative Brides and we really do listen, so much so that we’ve included more DIY projects that you can do from home and on a budget. We’ve also hand-picked even more beautiful products and services from some of our favourite suppliers and brands within the UK. This edition also plays host to not one, but two real weddings. One of which is my brother and his new wife Olivia (who grace the front cover). I’m totally smitten with their Hampshire wedding (pgs 24-27), as it was all about the things they love and all their hard work planning really paid off, making it a day everyone enjoyed. Happy Planning! Clair Hinge Editor (clair@creativebrides.co.uk) Alison Wickens Graphic designer, head of soap opera updates and secret Zoopla addict Jemma Hare Feature writer, Bridal Stylist and 1940s enthusiast Mr CB Tea and cake provider, and just because he wanted to be in the magazine! 4

Marquees, yurts and tipis by LPM Bohemia

Festival Style Weddings If you’re a fan of fab wedding blogs you’ll have noticed a big upward trend in couples choosing to exchange their vows entirely in the open air – despite the British weather being a tad unpredictable. Outdoor weddings held in and around marquees, yurts and tipis are the perfect solution if you are looking for a relaxed, rustic, festival-type vibe or a village fete/family tea party atmosphere for your big day. LPM Bohemia have a great selection of marquees to complement this style of wedding.

80% of the bespoke wedding ceremonies that Celebrant Katie Keen (www.trueblueceremonies.co.uk) conducts are held completely outdoors; here are her top tips:

14

• Be flexible with your timings – if on the day, rain is forecast for your ceremony start time, pile everyone in your marquee and give them a drink to delay things – no one will mind. • Keep in mind your guests’ comfort – haybales for seating look lovely but can be prickly; cover them with pretty covers or blankets (and see if Granny wants a proper chair) • Always have a back-up plan in case of rain – a barn or enough marquee/tipi space to set up an alternative “standing only” ceremony - or simply hand out umbrellas to all your guests! • Factor in a rehearsal with your Celebrant - proper stage management and a practice ensures a perfect ceremony on the day!

What should I wear?

Your

dream dress It’s the morning of your first bridal appointment and Froufrou is your chosen bridal boutique. You have dreamt of this moment since you were three years old waddling about in mum’s heels and pearls, dabbing her lipstick onto your cheeks! You are probably feeling a mixed sensation of anxiety, nerves and excitement. The whole experience really can be quite daunting, especially if you are not used to wearing a dress. Try to not let these feelings overcome you and relax. Remember this is your appointment and we are here to help you find your dream dress. Words by Jemma Hare, Bridal Stylist at Froufrou Bridal Boutique

Getting your underwear right is crucial. I would always advise wearing a strapless nude bra and nude knickers! There is nothing more off-putting than looking into the gilded mirror ahead of you, there you stand, a vision of beauty in white, with your black knicker line and pink bra straps on show. In terms of style for your pants, it is a personal preference. Many girls opt for the ‘spanx’ style hold me in’s whilst others choose a lighter seam free G-string - either way think comfort, confident, flattering. For your external look, pick simple easy access clothes that are quick to slip on and off. Keep your makeup light and fresh. It is important to focus on the dress, not your hair and makeup at your initial appointment. Find your dream gown and the rest will fit in around her! At froufrou we want you to enjoy every second of your appointment so we will make no demands of you. We hold our own ‘dressing room shoes’ at froufrou. We have sizes 3-8 all with a rough three-inch stiletto, so if you’re looking for a specific heel height it would be advisable to bring your own so that you can grasp the look of the dress with your ideal shoes on.

Who should I bring?

Bring who YOU wish and do not loose sight of the fact that this is your day. From your best friend at work, to a bridesmaid, it’s not unusual for a bride to visit us alone, returning for her second appointment with her friends/family. Try not to feel pressured by the opinions of others, this is your dress, your day.

How do you know it’s The Dress?

We certainly can’t tell you. Some bridal shops will, to make the sale. However at froufrou we know how special this day is and we run our boutique for our love of bridal and all things wedding, so we will leave pressure outside the door.

Froufrou Bridal Boutique tel: 01892 541381 email: info@froufroubride.co.uk website: www.froufroubride.co.uk

Some brides will try on one gown and straight away know it is ‘the one’ and will end their search that day, others will spend months visiting many shops fearing that the dress is still out there somewhere! There are not always hysterical tears of joy and merriment, sometimes it is a simple smile just looking back at you.

Questions & Answers Richard Murgatroyd Photography richardmurgatroyd.com/wedding 07515 051180 • click@richardmurgatroyd.com

How did you become a photographer? I enjoyed photography long before I made the jump to being a full-time professional. It was photography that inspired me to travel the world where I was able to develop my own photographic style. A few years ago I fell in love with the work of an inspiring photographer who took me under his wing and taught me much about fusing documentary, fashion and wedding photography. After travelling around India and Nepal I came back and set up Richard Murgatroyd Photography, and have never looked back. Describe your photography style My style is, for the most part, observational, and focuses on capturing moments of intimacy or celebration. Every bride and groom is different. I find that by harnessing a couple’s unique body language I can create images that are both natural and personal to them. It’s important to put people at ease when they are at their most vulnerable and be sensitive to the mood and feeling at any point in time. Who influences your style? Probably the longest and most significant influence on my visual style and approach to photography has been publications such as National Geographic. Having my work featured by the National Geographic, and also being shortlisted for their Traveller Magazine ‘Travel Photographer of the Year’ are two recent career highlights. What is your favourite part of being a photographer? There are so many great things about what I do. I love the feedback you get in the job – and the instant response from the bride & groom when I show them the image on the back of my camera. But if I had to choose a favourite part of my job it would be the simple act of being present in so many unique and special moments and capturing them with my camera. Who would you like to photograph? This is perhaps a somewhat unconventional answer but I would have loved to have photographed my Nan & Grandad’s wedding back in 1946. They were inspirational and played a big part in my childhood but sadly only a single image exists as a reminder of their wedding day. Where is your photography taking you next? My next trip is to Australia as I have two fabulous weddings booked in between my other wedding and engagement shoots. I am also hoping to head out to Malawi this spring as part of my ongoing work for the charity Mission Rabies. 21

Wedding venue: Horsebridge Station near Stockbridge – a grade 2 listed railway station that has lovingly been restored by its owner Val who lives there Wedding photographer: Carly Michael AKA Kooky Weddings

How would you describe your wedding style? Relaxed and we felt it reflected us; easy going and fun. Did you make anything for your wedding? I made the cake, my mum made all the table cloths, runners and napkins and my Dad brewed limoncello for all the tables. They also bought and restored a bar for us. Tell us a little about the wedding ceremony: We wanted a really intimate wedding, so my bridesmaid Liz performed the ceremony. She did an amazing job, my brother Rupert and Adam’s sister Clair also did readings. We wrote our own vows, which made it very special and personal. >>

25

Tell us a little about your wedding reception: We married a little later in the day at 4.30pm, we then had drinks on the platforms with vegetable crisps. Then we had the speeches followed by dinner. The limoncello was cracked into with gusto setting us up perfectly for the ceilidh. The food was served by our favourite street food vendors from London. Our main course was cooked by the talented Matt from BBQ lab, made up of pigs cheeks in BBQ sauce, sous vide steak, Texan cavier (Mexican bean salad), pickled cucumber and corn bread, with bottles of BBQ and hot sauce on each table. Then pudding was doughnuts by You Doughnut which was served on the platforms and included salted caramel and chocolate flavours. Finally we had the HoBo Co in their beautiful old Citreon H Van serving coffee and hot chocolate in the evening set in the beautiful grounds of the station. What was your wedding music and entertainment: We had an acoustic set from Jon Hart on the platform before and after the ceremony, then a live ceilidh band and caller for an irish dance after dinner. As we’re not really ‘first dance’ kind of people we did a traditional irish dance where all our guests held hands in a circular and we weaved our way through them all. We loved it as we got to see all our guests together enjoying themselves, leaving us with great memories. What did you both wear and why? I wore a Laure De Sagazan dress, which was backless and it came with a lace jacket. It was a very light dress which made dancing and moving easy, it was a little bit different which is always appealing. I also got a bargain floral crown from etsy and wore flat slingbacks from Jigsaw. Adam wore a bespoke suite from Marc Wallace, with his favourite pair of Loake shoes and a green and white spotty dickie bow.

Memorable wedding day moments: Adam - it’s a cliché but seeing Olivia walk down the aisle, she looked stunning. Olivia - The whole day was amazing, saying my vows to Adam was indescribable, you feel like you’re going to burst with love for them.

34

How would you describe your wedding style? Casual, fun with lots of dancing. Did you make anything for your wedding? Mike’s mum lovingly made the bunting for the marquee. I hand stamped the seed favours and two of my best friends made the table plan. A little about the wedding: We didn’t really want to follow colour themes or styles. The look and feel of our wedding came from all the stuff that we liked. Our wedding was really about us, and sharing the day with all our family and friends. My family live near the venue and I have fond memories as a child of going on family walks across the grounds. I’ve always known I wanted to get married in the church next to the venue and walk down the path to be greeted by a marquee. Wedding music and entertainment: An acoustic set from Rockaoke while our guests talked and enjoyed the bubbles. They also provided our evening entertainment. It was brilliant and we loved that everyone got involved by taking it in turns to sing. What did you both wear and why? I wore a Charlie Brear dress that I got from her flagship store in Tottenham Street, London. If you ever go it’s in a pretty court yard flowing with lovely flowers, all very special and a great experience. Mike wore a T.M Lewin suite and a bow tie from The Cordial Churchman.

Vegas baby... Couples searching for a destination that offers a wedding and honeymoon in-one should add Las Vegas to their list. With more than 300 sunny days a year, Las Vegas provides the perfect backdrop for couples ready to tie the knot or relax after celebrations in the UK. Las Vegas offers everything from elaborate, over-the-top venues to intimate private settings that will bring the most romantic dreams to life. That’s why it’s no surprise that 100,000 marriage licenses are issued each year. Where to stay: Seal your love while looking over Las Vegas inside the exclusive Wedding Suite at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Purposefully designed without the traditional aisle and ceremony seating, guests stand in awe as vows are exchanged either in-suite or on the private wraparound terrace overlooking the heart of Las Vegas Boulevard. Couples can also opt for a fireside ceremony at the Boulevard Pool overlooking the Ice Rink and Las Vegas Strip during the winter season. Contact www.cosmopolitanlasvegas.com to talk over your wedding or honeymoon plans. Activities and Entertainment: You can’t go to Las Vegas without seeing a show. Las Vegas truly is the Entertainment Capital of the World. Whether your tastes are traditional or more contemporary, you’ll find something that will amaze and delight you. Vegas has become a global shopping destination and Las Vegas Boulevard South is more than just a playground - it’s one of the world’s great shopping streets. If you’re a thrill seeker then Maverick Helicopters offer flights above the Las Vegas strip and breath taking tours over the Grand Canyon. See www.maverickhelicopter.com for details. Visit www.visitlasvegas.co.uk for all the latest news and information about what’s on. 47

Couples and honeymooners choose Mauritius for its luxurious resorts and spas, while those in search of active adventure are drawn by its worldclass snorkelling, dive sites and water sports. Nature and environment lovers relish exploring the island’s forests, waterfalls and volcanic craters, and families enjoy the excellent kids’ clubs and leisure parks. From the bustling capital of Port Louis and entertainment hubs in the north, to the spectacular landscapes of the south; the swimming hotspots in the west, to the lagoon-fringed beaches in the east, visitors will find no end of inspiration to fill their days on this magical island. This exclusive yet affordable tropical island ranks consistently in the top five spots to marry worldwide and is the Indian Oceans leading honeymoon destination and so is synonymous with romance. With superb service, gourmet cuisine and spas at stunning hotels set on glorious beaches with a mountain backdrop, options to stay in pool villas, 24 hour butlers and helicopter transfers, Mauritius is the romantic destination that dreams are made of. Venues Most couples opt to marry on a beach or in hotel gardens with a wedding chapel, but for the more adventurous couples, there are plenty of other options. Couples can marry on board a luxury yacht or catamaran, underwater in a submarine, at a traditional colonial house where a friendly Creole

mama will help prepare the bride following old age traditions, or on LUX* Resorts Robinson-Crusoe style private island Ile Deux Cocos. Religious wedding venues are equally as stunning ranging from an 18th century village chapel, with a Mauritian choir, at Shanti Maurice to St Louis Cathedral. Honeymoons Mauritius is also a favourite choice for honeymooners, thanks to its good value packages, uncrowded beaches and unobtrusive, yet personalised, service. “It’s the perfect destination for those who want a romantic getaway,” says Dr Karl Mootoosamy, Director of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority. “It consistently ranks in the top five spots to marry worldwide, and overtook the Maldives as the ‘Indian Ocean’s Leading Honeymoon Destination’ in the World Travel Awards 2013.” Romantic hideaways like the Anahita Resort (anahita.mu) provide the ultimate escape for couples, with honeymoon packages including business-class flights, complimentary spa treatments and a candle-lit dinner from £2,735pp with Turquoise Holidays (turquoiseholidays.co.uk). While it’s hard to imagine a more romantic restaurant than Le Barachois at the Constance Le Prince Maurice (princemaurice.constancehotels.com), which floats over the warm waters of the lagoon, lit by lanterns.

Mauritius fact file

Mauritius is one of the only destinations where you can legally get married rather than just have a blessing. The bride and groom need to only turn up three days before the wedding or civil ceremonies, or 15 days before religious weddings, again unlike anywhere else where you need to be in the destination for a more significant period of time before the wedding. You can get married anywhere on the island.

48

With its exotic mix of African, Asian, and European influences, Mauritius is one of the world’s most captivating islands. Attracting nearly 100,000 UK visitors in 2013, its pristine beaches and affordable luxury hotels prompt comparisons with its Indian Ocean cousins, the Maldives and the Seychelles. But for many, Mauritius is the island that has it all, as blissful days on the beach give way to vibrant evenings alive with music and culture, making it the perfect destination for many seeking a paradise escape. Lying 2,000km off the southeast coast of Africa, the Republic of Mauritius, encompassing the islands of Mauritius, Rodrigues, AgalÊga and Saint Brandon, is a year-round destination, with a peak season extending from October to April.
