THE STRONGER WE BECOME The 58th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia is an important platform to showcase South Africa’s rich and varied artistic talent, especially in the year in which the country celebrates 25 years of freedom and democracy. EDITOR’S NOTE

THE TRAVEL BUG

A

nyone who can identify with me will know how hard it is to fight this particular bug – the ‘travel bug’. Ever since I was a young child, I have suffered from a bad case of the ‘travel bug’, and I still do. There is nothing nicer than choosing a destination, planning a trip, booking a trip, packing and travelling. For me, it can be a trip to a far away

destination like Europe, the USA or Australia, or simply a weekend away a bit closer to home – every trip is an adventure. These days, there are more trips to nearby destinations, the rand makes foreign travel rather expensive and like the average South African, we are working harder than ever and aren’t able to take long holidays. I do consider myself a seasoned tourist, both internationally and locally. Like many other visitors, my overseas family and friends make regular use of our hospitality and through playing host, I have gotten to love many parts of South Africa. I feel strongly that local tourism is the cure for our high unemployment rate. Throughout SA, there are many different types of accommodation, from small B&Bs to hotels to super lodges and self-contained cottages. I have seen what tourism can do to places like Graaff-Reinet, Bela Bela and many other small towns. The houses are freshly painted and look cared for, and the towns are clean and even prosperous when one compares them to some years back before the tourists. Every little B&B, lodge or hotel employs staff to make visitors welcome. This means this is not only happening in the big metropolises of Johannesburg and Cape Town – all throughout South Africa you can find wonderful places who employ staff. Right now, I am planning a trip to the Cape to visit some of the

sculpture gardens we covered in Creative Feel, to visit the Norval Foundation and see their exciting current exhibitions, to check on changes at Zeitz MOCAA and, most importantly, attend the opening night of Kunene and the King at the Fugard Theatre (after our interview with Antony Sher, it is compulsory to see it and there are no plans for a Joburg run). Combined with some stop-overs like the Hogsback village in the Amatola Mountain Range (with the possibility of snow), some catch-ups in Smithfield about the arts scene and, of course, a most important extended visit to the beach for walking and recharging my batteries, it will be another great trip. What is now really exciting for me, is working with the Department of Tourism South Africa for Creative Feel and to share with our readers their ideas and plans for South Africa. Anything to just get ideas and inspiration for new wonderful destinations that I might not have explored yet.

IQOS World revealed by Alex Chinneck. PHOTO Marc Wilmot

We love this... British sculptor Alex Chinneck, known for inverting electricity pylons and tying grandfather clocks in knots, ‘unzipped’ the façade of a building in Milan for IQOS World revealed as part of the city’s Design Week festivities in April. Chinneck’s art is distinguished by his bold and disruptive vision. His unique talent for combining art, architecture and theatre in his work manifests on a monumental scale: The architecture itself, both inside and out, becomes transformed into a work of art, taking on new and

The walls and floor become metaphors for a process of transformation, evoking – through imaginative portals – seemingly infinite routes to a newly imagined future. ‘By taking familiar materials and architectural forms and making them behave in extraordinary ways, we are working with IQOS to change visitors’ perceptions of what is possible,’ said Chinneck. ‘Through the repeated use

All Jazzed Up by Tonya Koenderman The year is 1939. The place is New Orleans. And the streets are alive with jazz – Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, etc. The world was at war, and people were depressed, disillusioned, and poverty-stricken. But extreme times usually call for extreme creativity and self-expression – some of the greatest songs of all time were written during this period. Come and enjoy a laid-back evening with acclaimed cabaret artist Tonya Koenderman, and sing along to some great jazz classics. Koenderman adds her own spice and sparkle to the likes of ‘Autumn Leaves’, ‘My Funny Valentine’, ‘Dream a Little Dream’, ‘L-O-V-E’, ‘At Last’, ‘Cry Me a River’, and a host of others. Performance date: 25 May at 19:30. Be sure to book your tickets for both of these shows as seats are limited. For bookings, call 012 542 4449, or email info@castadiva.co.za.
