Art is an expression of who you are. It’s about putting yourself out there for the whole world to see. It takes sacrifice, hard work and, above all, heart. Just look at the winners of the 2020 Standard Bank Young Artist Awards. Whether they’re reflecting social injustice in paint, paving the way for women through dance, changing the face of theatre or bringing the sounds of Mzansi to the world, each artist has poured their heart into their art. And they hope to capture yours at the 2020 National Arts Festival. Left to right: Jefferson Tshabalala (theatre), Sisonke Xonti (jazz), Lulu Mlangeni (dance), Blessing Ngobeni (art) and Nthato Mokgata (music).

EDITOR’S LETTER

THE CONTINUED SUCCESS OF THE CREATIVE ECONOMY

W

elcome to the November issue of Creative Feel! This month, we continue on from October in celebrating excellence and innovation in the arts with the Business and Arts South Africa (BASA) Awards, the Standard Bank Young Artist Awards and the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative.

Congratulations to all the BASA Awards recipients! Particularly, of course, to the

DeskLink Media/Creative Feel and Vuyani Dance Theatre (VDT) teams. As I wrote in September, our relationship with Gregory Maqoma and VDT goes back over a decade and we are all incredibly proud of our media partnership and the coffee table book that we produced together: Looking Back to Move Forward. That there is such a wealth of businesses supporting the arts is thrilling – thank you for making the creative space such a thriving and exciting place to be. Thank you also to the BASA team for making the BASA Awards such a fantastic celebration of the arts. This year’s group of Standard Bank Young Artist Award winners need very little introduction to Creative Feel readers. They are all incredibly talented young creators and we so look forward to seeing what they produce over the next year. Congratulations to Lulu PHOTO Matthew Jordaan

Mlangeni, Nthato Mokgata (also known by his stage name Spoek Mathambo), Jefferson Tshabalala, Blessing Ngobeni and Sisonke Xonti – it is so well deserved! We would also like to extend our congratulations to Bongani Tembe, the CEO and Artistic Director of both the KwaZulu-Natal and Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestras, who has been at the helm of the KZN Phil for 25 years and has been incredibly successful in the financial turnaround of both orchestras. As part of an ongoing exploration into how, through strengthening the creative industries, we can significantly grow the economy, we take a look at the film industry in SA this month. One organisation that is leading the way in terms of growing the film industry is the Gauteng Film Commission, which plays a multi-faceted role in the audio-visual industry and is helping filmmakers to tell authentic stories in South Africa’s premier film destination. Hope you enjoy the issue!

pera is undoubtedly one of the most wonderful forms of emotion transformed into music. In each aria, you feel and hear the joy, love, madness, anger, sadness – any emotion you can think of. All

of this portrayed by an artist. This is not the easiest of tasks, but if done correctly, that artist can take you to a whole new world and show you a little piece of ‘magic’ through the most beautiful music in the world and angelic vocals. Casta Diva Boutique Hotel is very proud to announce that they have a very exciting upcoming concert, Concert of Dreams, with local, world-class artists. South African opera stars Anina Wasserman (soprano), Chris Mostert (tenor), Linette van der Merwe (mezzosoprano), Thabang Senekal (baritone) and Albert Aldrich (baritone), accompanied on piano by the legendary Susan Steenkamp-Swanepoel, will be performing opera arias and duets from operas like Verdi’s much-loved La Traviata, Rigoletto and Falstaff, Saint-Saëns’ Samson and Delilah and Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet, just to name a few. The audience can also look forward to much-loved arias from operettas like Stolz’s Frühjahrsparade and a Neapolitan favourite or two. As an added bonus, the audience will also be indulged with the amazing piano arrangements by famous South African pianist Martin Lane. Lane will be performing various arrangements of well-known opera arias, symphonies and much-loved songs. Be sure not to miss this one-night-only concert at the beautiful Casta Diva Boutique Hotel in Pretoria (67 Albatros Street, Ninapark) on Saturday 30 November 2019 at 19:00. Dress code: Smart. Entry is free but a donation to the artists will be required. As this concert takes place in Casta Diva’s Charisma Restaurant, seats are limited.
