58 JOIN US!
I don’t know if it’s all the fir-scented candles or the peppermintlaced hot chocolate, but Christmas is guaranteed to make me a little emotional. It’s that feeling of sharing and giving, seeing more smiles on faces, and spending quality time with people who matter. It always makes me appreciate our industry more, and so in this issue we applaud our Heroes of 2023, the exceptional individuals who have fuelled innovations within their own businesses, while also doffing our cap at some of the big launches of the year, too, from page 48. And we have plenty of heroes in our Most Wanted and It List Grand Final coverage, from page 25. It’s stuffed to the gills with fabulous people in jawdropping outfits celebrating our brilliant winners, including Conor James Doyle and OB1 Hair’s Lorraine Naughton. Perhaps pour yourself a mulled wine and enjoy the spectacle… We hope that you have a wonderful Christmas and New Year – can’t wait to see you in 2024!

A SELECTION OF THE ESSENTIALS
LAOIBHSE O’MALLEY, a thirdyear apprentice at Bridget Haren Hair and Beauty in Ennis, has won first place in the hairdressing category at WorldSkills Ireland. The junior battled fierce competition over a three-day period in Dublin across categories as diverse as catwalk fashion, ladies’ festival look, ladies’ commercial colour, and men’s colour and cut. WorldSkills Ireland is a collaborative initiative between industry, education, and government, and was founded to shine a light on the importance of skills and apprenticeships.
No VAT rate relief in Budget 2024
The Irish Hairdressers Federation’s pre-budget submission requesting government permanently reduce the recent increase of VAT rate for the industry back to 9 per cent from the current 13.5 per cent has gone unheeded in the 2024 Budget. A Minimum Wage increase and other changes to tax were included by Minister for Finance, Michael McGrath. As of 1 January 2024, the minimum wage will increase by €1.40 to €12.70 per hour. Elsewhere, the existing VAT registration thresholds for businesses increase from €37,500 to €40,000 for services, and €75,000 to €80,000 for goods. Employers’ PRSI will increase by 0.1 per cent from October 2024 to fund future pensions. The standard rate income tax cut-off point is being increased to €2,000 to bring entry to the higher rate of income tax to €42,000. The 4.5 per cent rate of Universal Social Charge will be reduced to 4 per cent. Personal, Employee PAYE and earned income tax credits are being increased by €100 each to €1,875. The Revenue is setting up a dedicated Tax Administration Liaison Committee sub-group, making it easier for business to access support, and has announced €250 million to be allocated for business support schemes, although details have yet to be revealed.

Boasting the world’s first patented cold-processed technique, Act+Acre is a scalp soothing line that demands shelf space Hair that’s worth romancing is cultivated from care that runs deeper. All roads to angelic heads, including healthy locks that swish and bounce, start with well looked-after scalps. The number one hair problem globally, unhappy scalps are crying out for a more innovative solution to discomfort and dullness, and it’s here. Say hello to Act+Acre, a trichologistdeveloped scalp care range. Taking a committed approach to scalps as the best beauty brands do with skin, Act+Acre doesn’t strip away, it builds it back stronger. Powered by science-led research and natural ingredients to actively treat scalp issues, this is a bona fide game changer for hair health thanks to its patented cold processed technique, a global first for the scalp care world. The brainchild of Irish-born celebrity stylist and scalp and hair loss specialist, Helen Reavey, her 15 plus years working in the hair industry, including styling on designer catwalks and appearing in Vogue, showed her that beautiful hair really does begin with a healthy scalp. Together with her husband Colm, they swerved the usual heat-based production methods and patented the cold-processed

technique, ensuring the most potent nutrients are maintained in the formula for the most effective results. Sustainability is built deep into the brand too; from its eco-conscious packaging and natural ingredients to its cold-processed method that reduces energy use in the production process by 90 per cent. Act+Acre also funds wind farms in India, a step in the right direction for our planet. To get your client started on the journey to restoration, reach for Act+Acre’s Scalp Detox. Formulated with basil leaf, it has been clinically proven to target follicle cells to delay and reduce hair loss, while restoring the scalp’s dermal structure. Once they experience the wonders of Act+Acre at the backwash and in the chair, tempt them with a takeaway retail treat with Act+Acre’s Plant Based Dry Shampoo, perfect in-between washes for scalp sensitive heads. Another top treatment is the Cold Processed Stem Cell Serum which promotes hair growth, hydration and scalp revitalisation thanks to Swiss apple stem cells that combat hair thinning. Take your client’s scalp seriously with Act+ Acre, your new ace to play in the salon, enabling transformation through the power of nature.

THE FACES THE PEOPLE IN ACTION
What Would Rossa Danagher Do?
Salons must be proactive to encourage the best talent to stay. Rossa Danagher, owner and creative director of Rossanos Hair Salon Group, explains how he has
future proofed his business
IN THE EVER-EVOLVING world of hair salons, I’d like to say that Rossanos Hair Salon Group stands out as a beacon of resilience and adaptability. We’ve faced various challenges but have always managed to emerge stronger and more united. We have dealt with the loss of some of our senior star stylists after lockdown as they chose different career paths. Since then, we have not only embraced change but have also implemented a new salon culture programme that fosters communication and empowers our entire team. We believe that communication is the lifeblood of any successful salon group. We value the opinions and ideas of our staff, understanding that their input is crucial in shaping the future of our salons. By creating an environment where everyone has a say in how we run our salon, we ensure that our team feels heard, respected, and motivated to give their best every day.
WHAT MADE ME BOZENA SAREK
Bozena Sarek Hairdressing, Navan @bozena_sarek_hairdressing I’m originally from Poland and in 2006 I moved to Ireland, where my husband had been working. Initially I struggled to find work due to a lack of English skills. Eventually, I got a job at an Irish salon where I learnt English and hairstyling to appeal to my Irish clientele. I opened my own salon in 2010, and my former boss mentored me, helping me gain confidence. Building a business and dealing with
16
016-018_Faces Ireland Xmas.indd 1
We believe in surrounding ourselves with individuals who are not only eager to learn and grow within our salon, but who also share our passion for the industry. We understand that by investing in the knowledge and skills of our team, we create a win-win situation. Our staff receive ongoing development opportunities, and this commitment to education also ensures our clients receive the highest service. But our dedication extends beyond our doors. We take immense pride in working closely with the Cancer Support Group in Sligo, giving back to the local community, and supporting those who are going through difficult times. It’s this sense of community and compassion that sets us apart and fuels our determination. I believe that we are future proofed. We have embraced change, empowered our team, and created a culture of communication and growth. Education and community involvement are our core values, and we remain confident in the resilience of our industry. @rossa_danagher
accounting in a country I was still getting to know was challenging. I felt isolated and part of it was my fault for not asking questions. I see myself as someone who solves problems, so I couldn’t bring myself to ask for help, but it has made me the leader I am today. Every stylist who works with me learns from me, and I try to tailor their training accordingly. That’s how we create a perfect team. When one stylist joined me, she had given up hairdressing due to an allergy to hair colour. I taught her how to be a men’s hairstylist and barber, and she’s since won a national award. Another joined as a junior, quickly became my assistant and today she is the salon manager. I’ve grown as an artist and discovered that being a leader is about governance, and that by taking care of myself, I can take care of everyone.

24/7 A DAY OF WORK/LIFE BALANCE FOR COIA DAHILL, OWNER OF HEMERA HAIR IN CLONMEL @COIA_STYLES @HEMERA_HAIRSTUDIO I GET UP AT…7am. MY WORK WARDROBE CONSISTS OF… Mostly black clothes. MY JOB ENTAILS… Creating fab hair, awesome hair content, running the salon, and educating stylists including junior stylists.
WHEN I GET STRESSED I… Take a few minutes to myself, to just step away and then get back on track. WHEN I GET STUCK… I bring it back to basics, we can often over-complicate things especially in a tricky situation. THE HABIT I NEED TO BREAK IS… Eating snacks on the go instead of having a proper lunch! THE MISTAKE I LEARNT THE MOST FROM… Not spending enough time on toners. Creating tailored toners and having the adequate time to spare has brought my colour work to the next level. I’M ALWAYS… Planning how my days are going to look so I can make the most out of my working week. MY FAVOURITE WORK TOOL IS… My Framar brushes for balayage. THE ADVICE I’M GLAD I IGNORED… Was my last boss telling me I was mad to be leaving the job, starting my own business at 21 was scary but it has worked out well! MY INBOX LOOKS LIKE… It’s either super full or totally empty. If I’ve got a lot of messages, I need to have enough time to sit down and reply properly.
I GOT HERE BY… Believing in myself, working hard and pushing myself out of my comfort zone. MY DAY CONSISTS OF… It depends on the day. It could be doing a client’s hair, organising the salon, taking care of the admin, creating content, or educating both at Xpert Professional Accademia and in the salon.
MY BIGGEST INDULGENCE IS… Chocolate, unfortunately! AFTER WORK… I go back into mum mode.
MY DAILY FUEL IS… Between Coke Zero and a VITHIT power drink, it depends if I’m having a healthy week or not.
Instagram I use this a lot for work, to promote my education and share my knowledge with other hairdressers.
18
016-018_Faces Ireland Xmas.indd 2
I DECOMPRESS BY… Getting to the gym and working out.
TikTok I enjoy both creating content on the app and watching it. It’s a bit more fun and less work for me on there.
Outlook I check my emails every morning, in case anything has come in that needs my immediate attention.

BEHIND THE MIRACLE A genre-smashing, innovative hair brand doesn’t appear from nowhere. OLAPLEX is the result of sustained scientific research that’s changed the hair repair game for good
The story of OLAPLEX has become a modern industry legend. How one revolutionary innovation from humble beginnings went on to transform the hair of millions. It’s a fascinating tale to tell, so cosy up by the fire and let’s begin… It all started in 2014 when two California-based chemists created a whole new haircare category from their garage – bond-building. This technology meant that broken bonds – created by aggressors such as chemical services, heat styling, mechanical friction and pollution – could now be repaired and hair built back stronger and healthier looking. Now, nearly a decade later, clients no longer need to choose between damaged tresses and an extreme cut, or to swerve colour to avoid damage... the solution to better hair had arrived! OLAPLEX is the gift that keeps on giving, and a miracle that happens every day of the year.

LET’S GET ZEN A mental health-positive salon is built by good leadership. L’Oréal Professionnel Paris ambassadors Adam Reed and Norma-Jean O’Reilly tell us how
NORMA-JEAN O’REILLY,
CO-OWNER, THE ROOM, DUBLIN Creative HEAD: As a junior, did you talk much about mental health? Norma-Jean O’Reilly: Mental health was never discussed; the approach was stay busy, do your job, work hard, and don’t complain. There were a lot of tears as I struggled with criticism and took it personally. I look back and wish that I could have been a junior now, especially with tools like Head Up Keys on offer. CH: Is it hard as salon owners to take on the concerns and worries of your staff? NJO’R: It’s hard and you must tread carefully about what’s appropriate or inappropriate. My business partner Orla and I try to encourage the staff to talk to us, that we are always there for them no matter what. CH: How else do you support each other? NJO’R: We have open chats with our staff even about our personal lives, not everything, but enough for them to feel they can come to us. I recently lost my sister Melanie, and I feel that being open about my grief will encourage them to speak up. Talking to each other helps. CH: How do you manage the many pressures of a busy salon? NJO’R: We all help each other with jobs, and just because I’m the owner it doesn’t mean I can’t muck in. I shampoo my own clients when I can, I clean, and get stuck in. We are a great team, and we know when someone needs help. CH: How do you ensure everyone feels cared for in your team? NJO’R: We close every Tuesday after a bank holiday so that’s 10 long weekends a year. We close at 4pm every Saturday, so all employees get to have a good weekend; and we only do one late night a week. They appreciate that it’s not all about the business making money, it’s also about creating a happy salon.

ADAM REED,
ARKIVE BY ADAM REED Creative HEAD: What do you wish you’d known about mental health earlier? Adam Reed: Most of us had other jobs to sustain a living as salaries were low when I began hairdressing, so physical exhaustion and burnout were prevalent. Talking about it was such a no-no then. It would have been great to have the tools to recognise when things were escalating so you could get in front of problems. Thankfully, that’s where Head Up and its learning modules come in. CH: What resources do you have in place to support each other? AR: Open conversations among all staff members at every level is the most vital tool. A friendly ear ethos in the team helps people have the support and safety to take their next steps. We hope to create a safe space for them in work but also encourage them to seek support externally as well, which is as important. CH: What do you have in place when the salon is busy to ensure everyone feels looked after? AR: We remind everyone that their physical health is important, so that means taking regular breaks and communicating when they feel over stretched, unwell or unable to fulfil their day’s work. We have in-person team meetings and briefings, and encourage everyone to talk so that small things don’t become big things. CH: Do you have advice on how you stay on top of your mental fitness? AR: I find it very hard to form new behaviours, so I tell people not to work how I work! Although I try to talk about how I feel, I’m not the best at it, but I really try to open up. Being surrounded by the right people and the right team is fundamental.

Cuts, colours, restyles, photoshoots, live shows – whether hairdressers are bossing it on the salon floor, freelancing, or in session work, it’s a life lived in the fast lane. In a high-octane industry all about performance, there’s not much time to think about when your tank is running low. Not just technicians and creative talents, hairdressers are unofficial therapists, fulfilling a unique role as listeners as well as service providers. The fact that 75 per cent of clients consider a hair appointment a form of self-care* shows the level of responsibility stylists hold. But how are hair pros feeling? According to two studies by L’Oréal Professionnel Paris, mental health is the number one challenge for stylists in six countries, while 65 per cent have experienced anxiety, burnout and depression during their professional career.* Couple this with the fact
hair pros spend an average of 2,000** hours a year listening to clients, it’s no wonder they need more support. A mental health pandemic is raging in this vibrant industry. If we fail to intervene, we could lose our brightest and best, not to mention the next generation of talent, which tends to prioritise their mental health. Feeling drained and overwhelmed shouldn’t be the norm in a hairdresser’s day. But there is help on hand… A trusted partner since 1909 – there to help educate and inspire – L’Oréal Professionnel Paris is going further to help today’s hair community where it needs it. Head Up is a movement focusing on improving hair professionals’ mental health, with free education resources so hair pros can help feel better, setting off a ripple effect of mind positivity.

BRINGING IT
For the past 14 years, Creative HEAD’s It List Awards have provided a platform for emerging hair talent aged 30 and under, with longstanding supporter and exclusive sponsor, ghd, by its side. These are the new names set to shape the future of British and Irish hairdressing…
Mia Mozley
Charles Rose
Darcie Harvey
WINNER: The Rising Star
WINNER: The Business Builder
WINNER: The Editorial Stylist
After joining Alice and the Hair in Derby, she jumped into education and grasped every chance to gain skills in specialist areas, including texture and colour. Billed as a ‘blonde transformation specialist’ and passionate about braiding and crafting vivid tones, Mia certainly has a bright future ahead at her new salon home, Tuckwell & Co.
Believing barber clients were missing out on luxury salon experiences, Charles opened his business, Crate Cheshire, in 2018, with the goal to stand out from the crowd. Five years on, Charles is the proud owner and director of three destination spaces offering short hair appointments for all genders, plus a product line and a home fragrance range.
When she’s not running a busy column at Reuben Wood Hairdressing in Manchester, Darcie can be found working on sets for fashion editorials, advertisements, and TV shows. Her work has been featured in major magazines, including Vogue, Dazed, HUF and Hunger, and she’s styled hair for a Grazia cover with Lioness, Chloe Kelly.

Anna Cofone
Jody Taylor

Men’s Hair Specialist winner 2018, 2020, 2022
Anna’s talent is called upon by names from Lana Del Rey to Claudia Schiffer, publications including Vogue, Dazed, and Wallpaper*, as well as brands like Isabel Marant, Gucci, NET-A-PORTER, and Sephora, her wide-reaching artistry is nothing short of sublime. But that’s not all, her heart is as big as her talent – she recently launched HAIR&CARE, dedicated to empowering visually impaired individuals. An industry gem and now a Most Wanted Legend.
Jody is a revolutionary talent in the men’s market, responsible for creating styles that become cult. He has an eye for the effortlessly cool, which has attracted brands such as JORDANLUCA, Vetements and Matches Fashion, titles from Interview to Man About Town and high-profile names including Emma D’Arcy, Jack O’Connell and Callum Turner. Conor James Doyle Conor James Education
WINNER: Education Expert
The Hair Sanctuary provides knowledge and skills around textured haircare for children in foster care, working in partnership with councils and foster homes. “When children are placed with carers from different ethnic backgrounds, they struggle to care for their hair, and carers struggle to advise and support them due to lack of experience,” Naomi says. The company’s aim is to ensure that Black and mixed heritage children in care feel accepted, encouraged, and proud of their identity.
“I BELIEVE EDUCATION IS A FUNDAMENTAL PART OF WHAT WE DO. MY JOURNEY IS ABOUT MAKING IT BETTER AND MORE ACCESSIBLE” Dunlavin-based Conor is on a mission to fix education for neurodiverse hairdressers. “I have found 55 per cent of our industry is diagnosed with, or can relate to, neurodiversity,” he says. He’s lectured at schools and industry events to talk about awareness, coping mechanisms and provides fun, alternative approaches to education so every stylist can learn, no matter what.

Lisa Farrall
WINNER: Best New Salon
WINNER: Best Client Experience
WINNER: Texture Expert
The brainchild of owners Jordan Massarella and Ben Jones, Massarella + Jones first opened its doors in lockdown but just 16 months later, relocated to a bigger location. In a nod to its period surroundings, the interior sports Regency-inspired details such as pillars around mirrors, but with a contemporary twist and individual stations built into the structure to offer privacy. Eclectic, homely, cosy and comfortable with a flair for fun.
Jenn Linton and Joanna MacDonald pride themselves on offering an “uplifting, contemporary and vibrant” salon experience. Complimentary prosecco, cocktails of the season; all can be enjoyed by customers and each appointment includes added time for a consultation, which gives stylists the opportunity to give clients styling tips for home and targeted advice based on their hair and lifestyle. When can we go?
Lisa is on a hair equality mission, with the aim of seeing all salons and stylists educated in all hair textures. She’s passionate about teaching others how to work with every hair type through her brand WIG London, taking training into colleges and hair businesses all over the world. In addition to education, Lisa is in demand by some of the globe’s biggest names, having styled the likes of Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, and Harry Styles.

Grace Dalgleish
WINNER: Business Thinker
WINNER: Best Local Salon
WINNER: Colour Expert
The duo’s largest location, the Heist House, opened in 2021 as the “ultimate community destination”, where stylists, clients, freelancers, and locals mix. A synergy of hair, coffee, yoga, events, photography, work, and hair education, it’s the community that creates the space, and the fresh concept has boosted profits, too. Additional revenue alone in the past year was more than £200k (€230k).
Here you’ll find promises on the wall for clients including messages of kindness, patience, and compassion. The salon supports the Highland Hospice through fundraising and in-patient hair services, now a decades-long relationship. A VIP room with a private entrance is perfect for vulnerable and anxious clients, and an annual charity fashion show has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds to date.
Grace doesn’t play by the rules with colour, instead favouring hue combinations that clash and stand out from the crowd. “I believe that we shouldn’t be limited to just a tint brush,” she says, which is how her wildly popular Process Paint technique began. From London Fashion Week to editorial work, Grace always strives to create something new and dynamic, and that's why she’s won this award two years in a row.

WINNER: Best Salon Team
WINNER: Hair Trend
WINNER: Men’s Hair Specialist
Ena Salon, run by Johnny Othona and Pedro Inchecko, introduced its Kindness campaign to change salon culture and improve wellbeing. It included life-coaching for the leadership team, teaching them how to lead their teams with passion and purpose, in-house nutritionists, financial advice, and much more. Ena also offers ways for the team to connect and grow physically via activities such as hiking and wild swimming.
If Elvira from Scarface embraced pretty pastels, this is the look she’d rock. Both iconic and forward-facing, it’s a finish you can safely predict will be all over clients’ Pinterest boards. It's a look that Anne says is a personal tribute to two great artists – Dutch painter Piet Mondrian and French fashion legend Yves Saint Laurent. The blend, the bevel-edged bottom, the beauty – Anne nailed it.
From Hackney to Harrods, Chris has experienced many different hair environments throughout his career. Despite plentiful accolades, including working with top designers on shoots and runway shows, education and mentorship remain his personal pillars. “I believe in sharing my knowledge and experience with the next generation, fostering their growth and encouraging their journeys,” he says.

WINNER: Creative Talent An editorial colourist, global educator, and creative director at Billi Currie, Grace’s mission is two-pronged: to help hairdressers open their minds to colour, and to tailor services to he individual, while respecting the core foundations. This has already been a huge year for Grace, who worked on the Schwarzkopf Professional Essential Looks campaign and was named as an ambassador for yuv.
OB-1 Hair in Maynooth has deep-dived into its recycling this year, establishing individual bins for hair, PPE, plastic, metal, and colour. As a result, it has smashed its goal of sending zero waste to landfill. A €2 green fee across all salon services funds its sustainability journey and makes clients aware of green goals. Even hair waste is reused – being made into booms to clean up oil spills. Five green stars!

Navan salon owner Bozena Sarek (pictured, inset) travelled to Madagascar this autumn to establish a small salon to teach girls at an orphanage hairdressing skills. One of the poorest countries in the world, more than 80 per cent of those aged under 18 in Madagascar live in extreme poverty. Anything to equip them with skills that can be monetised is crucial. At Akany Children’s Home, there are girls keen on becoming hairdressers, allowing them to be independent and enjoy a better start in adult life. “My dream is to transform this place into a functional hair salon where the girls can learn and practise,” explains Bozena. “Additionally, by accepting clients, profits can support the Akany home. If this project succeeds then we will create opportunities for these children.”
Back in March, the Sink & Anchor salon in Edinburgh was destroyed in a fire caused by a neighbouring restaurant. Having seen a post on social media, fellow salon owner Colin McAndrew of Medusa (pictured, inset) offered a lifeline of space in his Bread Street salon to Luke and Rachel Ellis and their team of six barbers. And indeed that was home for the Sink & Anchor barbering team for five months, until they were able to move back into their own premises. During that time, locals could also support Sink & Anchor by buying one of its branded T-shirts, which helped raise much needed funds. Luke is effusive in his praise for Colin. “Between Covid, setting up the new salon in August 2022, and the stress of expecting our first baby days after the fire, we had been absolutely devastated. Without him, Sink & Anchor wouldn’t be here.”

S A R A H M AS O N , S A R A H M AS O N H A I R D R E S S I N G At the TrendVision UK & Ireland final, Wella Professionals revealed a brilliant collaboration with The Little Princess Trust. It named country champions to encourage more salons and stylists to persuade clients to donate their lengths to the charity that makes wigs for children who have suffered hair loss due to cancer. In Ireland, Sarah Mason is that champion, and she’s already working hard. “Every one of us have been affected by cancer through our family and friends at some stage of our lives,” she says. “I’ve started spreading awareness through our social media platforms and reached out to schools in Galway.” Sarah believes the key is tapping into how donating makes a guest feel. “That feeling is very different, when their hair is being posted off to a special location instead of a bin! Did they know how special their hair was? Absolutely not! But now they do…” Building awareness into the business can be a natural part of your day to day, she stresses. “Sometimes, I incorporate a donation into our training sessions, so everyone learns how to perfect the hair after a donation,” she explains. “While the learning curve of compassion is being instilled in our young hairdressers, of how precious the nature of our craft is and how special it feels sending that envelope to The Little Princess Trust. I’m proud to be a part of the Wella family, and to be involved with such amazing artists who hope to make a difference in our world.”

Alison McRitchie (pictured), salon director of Inverness salon The Head Gardener, has injected community spirit right into the heart of her business. “What I hope I have installed in my team is kindness, compassion and a willingness to give back to the community,” she explains. What does this civic work look like? A relationship with the Highland Hospice that goes back 10 years is an example. The whole salon team gets involved and when the pandemic threw a spanner in the works, they set up an area in the salon with a private entrance. A worthy winner of this year’s Most Wanted Best Local Salon.

CONOR JAMES D OY L E Education guru Conor James Doyle has really listened to the needs of stylists wanting to learn, and has created methods that benefit the large numbers of neurodiverse stylists in the industry. “I have found 55 per cent of our industry is diagnosed with, or can relate to, neurodiversity,” he says. This year’s Most Wanted Education Expert understands while there can be no ‘one-size-fitsall’ approach to learning, especially for neurodiverse brains. His Pomodoro Technique, which includes 25-minute concentration periods followed by fiveminute breaks, allows people of all learning styles the bandwidth to digest knowledge and take stock. By incorporating visual techniques, movement, and a focus on small achievements along the way, neurodiverse learners get the inspiration and buzz they need to absorb it all.

The salon’s hit a major milestone, with zero waste sent to landfill. Hair waste is reused and made into booms to clean up oil spills while there are also separate bins for hair, PPE, plastic, metal, and colour. A €2 green fee across all services make OB-1 Hair’s sustainability journey financially possible and clients more aware of its green goals, enhancing its reputation.

Not ‘Just’ A Salon
A national ad campaign has shown millions of people how hair salon owners, managers and their teams are the driving force behind the remarkable impact hairdressing businesses have on their local communities A cut, a chat, a shoulder to cry on. Hairdressing salons wield an extraordinary power: the ability not only to create beautiful physical transformations, but also to form nurturing community spaces. Now a major advertising campaign, Not ‘Just’ A Salon, has demonstrated the remarkable ways hair pros create safe spaces for people to relax and unwind, while extending their support beyond the salon walls to impact positively on their local neighbourhoods. Created by The Hairdressing Industry, the Community Interest Company dedicated to showcasing the value and opportunity of careers in hairdressing, in an exclusive collaboration with L’Oréal Professional Products, the campaign features the stories of nine salons across Bristol, Dublin and Edinburgh. It demonstrates a wealth of creativity and commitment among hairdressing professionals to support and nurture local neighbourhoods, with initiatives ranging from mindfulness and nutrition advice to charity work and menopause clinics. It was shot by photographer/ videographer Sarah Seal, and art directed by The Hairdressing Industry chief executive, Jenny Brooks. Not ‘Just’ A Salon highlights the importance of hairdressing salons in their local communities as places of comfort, conversation and expert pampering, as well as judgment-free spaces where problems can be offloaded. The campaign also reinforces the message behind The Hairdressing Industry’s 2022 Not ‘Just’ A Hairdresser promotion, highlighting the salon as a vibrant, inspirational place to work, offering lifelong learning and career development opportunities. The campaign rolled out on social media across Meta platforms and YouTube from October – geo-targeted to people living in the three cities and also nationally. In Bristol the campaign also appeared on billboards and other outdoor sites around the city, as well as on the sides of two major bus routes. In total, it’s estimated that Not ‘Just’ A Salon was seen by around 30 million people.
Industry.indd 1
Says Jenny Brooks: “The dedication and commitment of hair professionals to their local communities don’t just impact the services they provide, but also the people they touch, making it a better world for everyone. Not ‘Just’ A Salon reminds people of the benefits of a salon visit to mental health and wellbeing while also showcasing how salons are innovative, exciting and compelling places to work and make a difference.” Says David Higgins, managing director of L’Oréal’s Professional Product Division UK&I: “We are delighted to be supporting The Industry on yet another important and impactful campaign. Salons and hairdressers are at the heart of everything we do at L’Oréal and we are committed to elevating the professional hair industry because we recognise that salons go far beyond a cut and colour, they are as the name of this campaign suggests – Not ‘Just’ A Salon. Salons are some of the most vibrant and diverse workplaces, with teams of varying expertise and experience ready to educate and embrace the next generation of hairdressers. I’m so proud to support this campaign that shines a light on the importance of salons on our high streets. Salons are at the beating heart of our villages, towns and cities and we are so very lucky to have them.” The campaign comes at a time when the hairdressing industry is facing its greatest recruitment challenge in a generation. According to a 2022 report by the National Hair & Beauty Federation, ‘Careers At The Cutting Edge’, there were 10,000 fewer hair and beauty apprenticeship starts in the United Kingdom in 2020/2021 than four years earlier. With the campaign linking people to a dedicated website, the-industry.co.uk, where they can meet all the case studies and find out how to get started in hairdressing, Not ‘Just’ A Salon is part of a wider drive to create and safeguard a new pipeline of talent to meet the needs of salons and barber shop businesses in the future. Francesco Hair Salons
Boasting a jaw-dropping view of Canary Wharf, Magazine London is an ideal venue for an event the size and stature of Wella Professionals’ iconic annual competition, TrendVision Award. About 700 guests surrounded an interlocking central catwalk, with hair hosts Patrick Cameron MBE and Fergal Doyle conducting the action. Alongside the colour and cutting awards – which included the return of the People’s Choice trophies voted for by the public – three exceptional shows kept the artistry sky-high all night. Digitopia from Cobella delivered otherworldly aesthetics, showcasing new possibilities in design, driven by the rise of AI and virtual realms… all brought to life through Illumina’s dreamy colour palette. Running alongside it was Outré from STIL, offering a hybrid of traditional Scandinavian design merged with unconventional shapes and silhouettes. From the Light into the Dark – soundtracked by beatboxer Killa Kela – brought together The Wella Collective, who delved into the realms of transformation, drawing inspiration from the vibrant and eccentric aesthetics of Harajuku culture. The exhilarating looks came from Cheynes, Francesco Hair Salons, Lara Johnson Lifestyle, NJUK and Tuckwell & Co. Finally, HOB Academy welcomed us into its Ethereal world, with a showcase of vivid colours and delicate textures, accompanied with strong geometric shapes, illustrating the possibilities using Illumina and Koleston Perfect. The event also revealed Wella’s partnership with The Little Princess Trust, unveiling four country champions to help encourage salons to get involved – Sarah Mason (Ireland), Lara Johnson (Wales), Charlie Taylor (Scotland) and Liam Fry (England). After all the winners were applauded, the after party offered a feast of sweet entertainment, including edible (and alcohol-laced) bubbles and instant handmade lollies and ice cream. An evening to leave the mouth watering…

IHF HAIRDRESSING CHAMPIONSHIPS The brightest talents from across the country gathered at the Lyrath Estate in Kilkenny for the IHF Gala Event, which includes the keenly contested IHF Hairdressing Championships. It’s a celebration of the world class hair stylists Ireland has to offer, and IHF president, Lisa Eccles, spotlighted that “the calibre of the entries and the winners shows that Ireland really punches above its weight when it comes to hairdressing talent”. Martha Galvin, founder of Allure Hair & Beauty in County Mayo, was named the IHF Hairdresser of the Year for the second year running, and with her team she took home trophies in four other categories. The members of the IHF Star Team were also revealed, and Caoimhe Feeley from Salon 2 in Sligo, scooped the IHF Irish Trainee Hairdresser of the Year. A brilliant showcase indeed of the nation’s talent… and a rather good party to follow, too!

THE LAST WORD ON…
MENTORING
Randy Tarampi for Unsplash
AS CREATIVE HEAD’S ACTIVATOR SCHEME OPENS FOR APPLICATIONS, WE CONSIDER THE POWER OF HAVING A MENTOR TO BOUNCE IDEAS OFF
Being a business owner doesn’t leave much time for anything else. So busy is the daily grind – hitting targets, servicing clients, maybe managing staff – that turning inwards to reflect on the bigger business questions gets left neglected. We can all get in our heads; can a second party help visualise the wider picture? For Marco Fiori, managing director of Bamboo PR, instructing a coach has been transformative. “I was grappling with losing my business partner and close friend to cancer. I took the plunge, and it was life-changing,” he explains. “It made me a better person; I have stronger relationships and boundaries and have learnt self-compassion, which has produced a healthier business that works for me, not the reverse.” Timing is one thing, but fit matters too, according to Cos Sakkas, global creative director at TONI&GUY: “It should be someone who you can meet for a chat and who offers guidance; they’re not a taskmaster or babysitter but will push you through your fears and comfort zone.” Joe Hemmings, owner of Bloggs Salons in Bristol, agrees the stars must align to make it work. “You need to open up and have honest conversations to get the most from them, so it’s essential that they are aligned with you, your beliefs, goals and business direction. There should be no judgement,” he says. Mentors are useful for ironing out practical points too, like when starting a new venture, explains business coach Alasdair Cunningham. “You may have technical skills and a great idea, but you might lack experience in running a business. Someone who has already built a successful company can provide you
66
066_LastWordIre.indd 1
with guidance on creating a business plan, securing funding and scaling,” he explains. Alasdair has some tips on how to find your ideal match; look for someone “who not only has the expertise and knowledge but also shares similar values”. Practically, mentor seekers should “identify individuals in your industry who have achieved the level of success you aspire to”. Then, reach out through professional networks, social media platforms, and networking events, he adds. Diversity and inclusion entrepreneur Danielle Baron suggests going online: “Explore reputable platforms like Life Coach Directory, which can help you identify someone tailored to your unique needs.” Feeling bashful about contacting a potential mentor? Don’t be, says Sally Brooks, creative director of Brooks & Brooks. “You’d be surprised how many successful hairdressers will willingly give their time if you just ask.” But don’t expect one person to solve all your problems. Instead, focus on one aspect at a time. “Sometimes you need different mentors for different parts of your career. It’s a journey, not a race,” she adds. Having a mentor will mean some serious self-reflection including exploring the fundamentals of why you do what you do in the first place. Want to get started? Activator from Creative HEAD – a free one-year mentoring scheme for hairdressing business owners at all career stages – is open for applications now (see page 58), and those who are successful will be carefully matched with an industry mentor to get cracking in January. That could be quite the Christmas present to yourself…
