Hidden depths L’Oréal Professionnel Paris scientists in collaboration with Ionnania University in Greece, spent seven years researching the issue. These are the findings you need to know: METAL – SPECIFICALLY COPPER – CAN HAVE A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON COLOUR RESULTS METALS INSIDE THE HAIR FIBRE POSE THE GREATEST RISK Q: Why is copper a problem? A: When you add an oxidant to the hair during the colour process, the excess copper that may have accumulated over time inside the hair fibre can interact with it and cause mini reactions to occur, which can lead to an unreliable colour uptake and hair breakage. And because it’s within the fibre, there’s no way to tell what exactly is inside the hair until you colour it.

Q: What’s the solution? A: The joint research between L’Oréal Professionnel Paris and Ioannina University scientists sought to find a magic bullet that could help neutralise these harmful effects. It took seven years and the combined talents of numerous scientists and hairdressers… but they found something remarkable! Glicoamine, a molecule small enough to penetrate inside the hair fibre, to help neutralise excess copper. This ingredient is the heart of Metal Detox, a new professional range.

Metal Detox: your secret weapon Glicoamine is the key ingredient in Metal Detox from L’Oréal Professionnel Paris. It's a molecule capable of targeting and neutralising excess copper found inside the hair

What is it about Glicoamine that makes this special molecule such a game-changer? Glicoamine is a chelating agent, like many other detoxifying ingredients but the biggest difference is that it is small enough to actually penetrate the hair fibre and target excess copper within. Once inside, it finds and attaches itself to metals, effectively neutralising them.

Metal particle

Glicoamine molecule

“Thanks to our collaboration with Ioannina University, we identified a perfect molecule: Glicoamine. It is the only active agent small enough to trap and neutralise metal inside the fibre. Fibre integrity is preserved, colour is mastered, and the oxidant gets to fully do its job” Charlotte Feltin, L’Oréal Haircare Laboratories

Metal deactivated by Glicoamine molecules

It’s very clever stuff and offers a huge breakthrough for both colourists and stylists. Without having to worry about hidden metals in hair challenging its structural integrity, you can go ahead and do what you do best: create incredible professional results to wow your clients, without them fearing damage from colour.

Keep talking

Some clients are scared colour will damage their hair. But with the help of Metal Detox from L’Oréal Professionnel Paris, a canny conversation and a quick spray before applying colour, you can soothe their concerns and tempt more new clients into the transformative world of colour… Years of client consultations will have taught you that lots of clients love the idea of a swishy new colour, but are absolutely terrified of the damage it might do to their hair – a major roadblock to your colour business. Now, thanks to extensive research into client habits by L’Oréal Professionnel Paris, we’ve got a clear image of the obstacles stylists face. Almost half of those surveyed (45 per cent) felt that their hair was ‘damaged’.* So it makes sense that clients are seeking help to offset this damage – 15 per cent of consumers included ‘repair damaged hair’ in the top five benefits they want to achieve, rising to 18 per cent for pro/salon brand users.* And what of the people who avoid colour services? The fear of damage is more than enough to scare them off colouring their hair – 18 per cent stated they don’t colour because they felt it damaged their hair.** So, now’s the time to talk about innovation and the quick service that can change their perception… and the colour you could see as a result. Thanks to Metal Detox from L’Oréal Professionnel Paris, you’re now able to meet concerns head-on, and show your clients that colour doesn’t need to be damaging. It’s a new conversation, a new opportunity to win over even more clients to professional colour, and boost your services and your bill along the way! We know that clients aren’t afraid to pay for the services they see a real difference from – L’Oréal Professionnel Paris’ research showed that 51 per cent of salon goers had opted for a treatment in the past 12 months.** Once they see what adding Metal Detox can do to their colour results they won’t want to switch back! Adding Metal Detox to colour services means more profit per colour client, which means growth and increased profits for the team. You could charge an additional fee for a pre-colour treatment that takes no extra time, but makes a big impact on your colour finish, and your clients’ hair happiness. That’s worth talking about, right?

The Professional Pre-Treatment Spray penetrates the hair shaft to help neutralise any excess copper build-up that hides within. Spray on dry hair from tip to root in consecutive sections, focusing on the lengths. Let the product air dry while preparing your colour, balayage or lightening mixture. Then continue with your colour service as normal.

STEP TWO

Gently cleanses the hair after the service. Apply evenly on wet hair, lather and rinse. Can be used once or twice, just like any other shampoo.

STEP THREE

Help protect the fibre from further particle deposits with the Metal Detox Mask. Ideal for medium to thick sensitised hair. It also allows for soft-feeling hair and boosts the overall glossy shine. Apply evenly to clean, towel-dried hair for up to 15 minutes and rinse thoroughly. The range has already been tested on more than 1,000 clients and has earned glowing reviews. With no impact to lift and a better uptake of colour, hair is intensely shiny and healthy-looking. But don’t just take our word for it…

Only in the hands of the professionals The future of hair colour comes not in a bowl, but in a spray bottle. L’Oréal Professionnel Paris asked top colourists what they thought of its latest innovation in colour, and the excitement was off the scale…

001_Cover Blue.indd 15

21/04/2021 15:33

“Innovation always excites me, but being able to take this into the salon and see the massive difference it will make on clients’ hair is probably one of the most exciting things to come into the salon in the past 10 to 15 years. Metal Detox will totally revolutionise the way that we colour hair in the salon. It really creates the perfect foundation for beautiful, long-lasting colour.” Adam Reed, Adam Reed London

There’s something in the water Sometimes even the best colourists, working on the healthiest hair, can get colour results that make them go ‘hmm’. There’s something beneath the surface… and L’Oréal Professionnel Paris has the answer

How often does a client sit in your chair and offload about the state of their hair… and their suspicions that it’s water that’s at least partly to blame? Yup, it’s known and understood by colourists and clients alike that our water can contain microscopic elements that have an impact on our hair. Everything from a surplus of minerals to calcium deposits and chlorine can have an effect, such as making colour fade faster, and making hair look and feel dry. But what can we do about it? This build-up has been accepted for years as something you have to just deal with. What if it didn’t have to be this way? After years of feedback from colourists and stylists and discussions about colour results not matching expectations, L’Oréal Professionnel Paris decided to investigate further. Just how prevalent and damaging is the effect of the water we’re using on our hair? Is there something else going on that’s impacting the

services you offer? The hunch proved to be correct – there was something else indeed… As well as mineral deposits, our water can contain metals due to pipeline erosion, wherever we may live. While this doesn’t pose a problem for people’s health, the research showed excess copper can leave hair more prone to breakage when bleaching or colouring. So L’Oréal Professionnel Paris got talking to consumers across the globe, conducting an international study to investigate the levels of metal in hair – and the results were astonishing. It found women all over the world with excessive levels of metals in their hair. The levels vary, depending on the water quality where we live and on hair porosity, but the problem is common. No matter the hair type or texture, no matter the hair habits of the women, the problem kept cropping up. The very nature of hair means it acts like a sponge, so wash after wash, metal particles can accumulate both on and inside the hair fibre.

“We know metals are a problem when colouring hair, and we’ve known it for a long time. On some clients you can see it – you can see a metallic tinge, a green cast and dull texture of cuticles.” Chris Williams, RUSH Salons

“My clientele love new innovation and new technology, so they will love to hear about this” Claire Chell, The Francesco Group

THE IRISH HAVE always known that green is good, but now more than ever it’s precious, too. A survey taken by market researchers Behaviour & Attitudes this year found 70 per cent of us are very concerned about our environment (ABC1s and Dublin residents were the most worried), with the vast majority saying they’ve made major personal and shopping changes based on these worries, from recycling and composting to going vegan, avoiding plastic and buying electric cars. With so many clients returning to salons greeneyed this month, our sustainability special (from page 28) shares triedand-tested ways to let them know your business cares, from the products on the shelves to your recycling commitments. Paper was established as a soft surface with the potential to spread Covid-19 last year and customers have changed the way they pay for goods accordingly. In our feature ‘Bin that book’ (from page 42), we look at how salons are moving away from paper-based appointment books and record-keeping in ways that boost sales, efficiency and customer retention. We’re also showcasing the 2020 Most Wanted and The It List Awards in our souvenir special, free with this issue… and we’re still celebrating our Irish winners! I hope you enjoy it all, and wish you a wonderful reopening.

THE NEWS AND KNOW-HOW FROM YOUR INDUSTRY

HABIC HAS WRITTEN to the government to call for five specific reopening supports to aid hairdressing, following the results of its specially commissioned economic report. Economist Jim Power’s recent study highlighted the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 restrictions on hairdressers, from the €884m drop in the industry’s contribution to GDP in 2020 to the PPE expenditure that could not be recouped. The confederation says the 9 per cent VAT rate for salons should become permanent, stating that a reduced VAT rate indefinitely for the sector would help protect legitimate operators. It has also called for a ‘stay and spend’ scheme. By giving a tax credit to customers, Habic says clients would be enticed back into salons; supporting struggling businesses seeking to rebuild and helping to divert business away from illegitimate operators. Habic also believes that the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme should remain in place for the sector until at least the end of 2021, and possibly to the middle of 2022, depending on the evolution of restrictions in the sector. As employers must possess valid tax clearance to enter the scheme, this will also protect legitimate businesses. Legitimate hairdressers were forced to shut in the interests of public health, running up rents, commercial rates, tax liabilities, and bank interest costs. Habic stated to government that if those businesses are to become viable again, it is essential reliefs are extended to the end of 2021, with consideration given to writing off some of the accumulated financial liabilities. Finally, Habic noted that when hair businesses are allowed to reopen, the costs will be significant. It has therefore requested a meaningful one-time grant payment.

CONCERNS GREET AMAZON SALON LAUNCH

40%

RETAIL GIANT AMAZON’S launch of a tech-led salon in London is raising eyebrows across the industry as to the implications for the future of salons’ retail sales. Amazon Salon in Spitalfields, London, will be an “experiential venue” that trials new industry technology alongside providing hair services from Elena Lavagni. Customers will be able to try different hair colours virtually using augmented reality mirrors, and enjoy Amazon Fire tablets at each styling station. They will also be able to point at a product on a shelf and information will appear on a display screen. Customers can scan a QR code on the shelf to visit the product page on Amazon and buy, with home delivery. The launch was met with worry on social media. Adam Reed of Adam Reed London, said: “We’ve been hung out to dry and now Amazon thinks it can take us on. Big mistake.” Most Wanted Legend Sophia Hilton said: “Say your final goodbye to product sales.” This move follows the launch of Amazon’s online professional store, which offers more than 10,000 salon items at wholesale pricing, with invoicing and quick delivery.

of Irish consumers say they “would happily pay more for a product packaged in an environmentally-friendly way”, according to the Sign of the Times 2021 report from Behaviour & Attitudes, a Dublin-based market research company.

WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE A HAIRDRESSER? I have wanted to be a hairdresser for as long as I can remember, when I was very young I would try to do anyone’s hair who would let me! Having an aunt running her own salon in the hairdressing industry was all the inspiration I needed. I started helping out in the salon on Saturdays at a young age and this confirmed hairdressing as the career for me. I feel that I couldn’t have had better training than I was provided by the entire Toni&Guy team, and I am so grateful to be carving out my career in such a globally recognised company.

LAUREN ROCHE INSTAGRAM: @LAUREN96ROCHE AGE: 24 SALON: TONI&GUY DUNDRUM

WHAT ARE YOU HIGHLIGHTS SO FAR? Well, having a personal interview in an industry magazine like Creative HEAD Ireland is certainly going to be up there! I have always loved creative competitions and have been lucky enough to be placed many times in our national Toni&Guy competitions. I’ve also really enjoyed assisting the Toni&Guy Artistic team for fashion shows.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS’ TIME? My main aim is to be an industry educator. I have worked under and alongside some of the strongest educators in the country and would one day like to follow in their footsteps. I have a passion for education and would love to play a part in influencing up-and-coming artists of the future. My dream is to become an academy educator or artistic director and would feel privileged to help others achieve their career goals. WHAT IS YOUR DREAM HAIRDRESSING GIG? I have always loved styling hair for fashion shows and competitions and have a real interest in working on TV or films sets. In the next few years I would like to have entered more competitions like Wella Professionals TrendVision Award – we recently joined forces with Wella so I’m excited about that.

Inside story STREETLIFE HAIR KILKENNY

Streetlife Hair founder Edwina Hayes’s artistic sensibility and strength in a crisis inspired her recently refurbished Kilkenny salon. Previously co-owner of Salon 87, Streetlife Hair is a real expression of Edwina’s own passions and talent. The first lockdown gave her time to focus on getting it right before opening officially in July 2020. “My new premises on William Street has a lot of space, which is ideal for social distancing,” she says. Lockdown did throw a spanner in the design works but, as wartime wisdom held, one should never waste a crisis, and Edwina is now reaping the benefits of pushing ahead. Many of her original design team’s plans were rendered unworkable, so she relied on construction help from her family alongside her own creative ideas. These included a blending of the masculine – lots of black and white and hardwood vintage flooring – with feminine pastel touches. Edwina is a National College of Art and Design graduate and supports local talent on her premises, commissioning three original pastel triptychs on linen from Kilkenny artist Sara Weldon.

But between the stress, the months without professional attention and the who-knows-what used on their hair, can their hair take the technical services they need? Revlon Professional’s much-loved Magnet range has evolved to go a step further in creating the perfect canvas for your work. Say hello to the Magnet Ultimate Reconstructing Service, which has been designed to create new bonds and improve hair condition before or in-between technical services. LIFE LESSONS

HUGH CAMPBELL HUGH CAMPBELL HAIR GROUP

Find and be a role model. Technique is the single most important element in hairdressing. I trained with Robert Chambers, who was taught by Tony Rodgers, who was taught by Vidal Sassoon. If you’re fortunate enough to learn at the shoulder of a master, you must share those skills. Work can be therapeutic. Making hairdressing my hobby, it doesn’t feel a lot like work, it’s a kind of therapy. Management is more stressful but you have to take it as a game and play to the best of your ability. Pay attention. During lockdown in Limerick, many people have been walking the Three Bridges, and I’ve been studying what they’re doing with their hair to see where hairdressing might be at right now. Dream but plan. Most of us come into the business with dreams of owning our own salon, but you need a specific plan to make your vision a reality, to give it 100 per cent every day. Build relationships. We think about this as soon as we get a client: building her confidence so she’ll keep coming back.

THE COLOUR CLINIC IS OPEN… AND HOW TO EVERY MONTH WE SPEAK TO A WELLA PROFESSIONALS COLOUR EXPERT ABOUT A KEY ISSUE BY MARCO DIAS OVERCOME IT. FOR MARCO DIAS, WELLA PASSIONISTA AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF THE STUDIO IN DUBLIN (@THESTUDIOIE), IT’S A LACK OF PREPARATION WHEN COLOURING TEXTURED HAIR “A common mistake that stylists make is misjudging textured hair, thinking it will be stronger than other types of hair, then picking the wrong products to use. But before all of that, it’s the preparation. I have 4A curls myself, and I always say to my staff: “If a person with textured hair walks in the salon, listen to this client even more than usual.” They have probably used so many products, been to so many salons – they will already know which ingredients work, which don’t. Listen to the client as they have a lot to give. Then you can introduce the right colour and homecare, based on their needs. Explain the process, test the hair to see how it reacts, and then recommend products prior to any colour. The colour journey starts long before any colour is even applied; I always recommend that my textured hair clients have the best haircare routine at home before any colour decisions. It’s so much better than going in after for damage control. Depending on the consultation, I recommend products such as Wella Fusion treatments to ensure the condition, the proteins and the lipids are all there, and from that point we can work out where to go with colour. I like to start with freehand techniques and lighten the hair more slowly – sometimes we even use 4% developer on it. We leave it on longer, massaging it on, especially on coiled hair. It’s absolutely necessary that every colour client leaves the salon with homecare, it’s the only assurance we have that when they return to the salon the integrity of the hair will still be there and we can continue the journey.” 16

THE N E E R G M A E R D AS THE MOST WANTED AWARDS STARTS THE SEARCH FOR ITS FIRST SUSTAINABILITY HERO, CREATIVE HEAD INVESTIGATES HOW AN INDUSTRY THAT HAS HISTORICALLY CREATED SO MUCH WASTE IS MAKING REAL CHANGE - AND HOW YOU CAN JOIN THE MOVEMENT WE’RE ALL AWARE of how priorities have changed since Covid-19 – for ourselves, our clients, our businesses. The idea of living more cleanly and more sustainably has undoubtedly been high on the agenda – how could it not be with the mounting use of disposal PPE needed to function on a daily basis? Yet even raising the topic in the hair industry can raise hackles, with cynics doubtful that claims made by brands and salons alike are anything other than ‘greenwashing’. However, there is a genuine interest from the majority of the industry to clean up its act and do better. It makes ecological sense to be sure, but it also makes commercial sense, as clients scrutinise the credentials of services and products and select accordingly.

28

SustainabilityIreland.indd 1

BIG BRANDS, BIG CHANGES

Further cementing its focus on sustainability as it celebrates World Environment Day on 5 June, Kao is following the Kirei Lifestyle Plan and part of this strategy sees the life cycle of each product in its Salon Division – which includes Goldwell, KMS, Oribe and Varis – examined and improved to ensure its environmental footprint is as small as possible. This includes a more sustainable sourcing of ingredients, creating packaging design that minimises waste, streamlining production, logistics, sales, usage and disposal. For example, KMS regular-sized shampoo bottles are 100 per cent recyclable and by switching to lightweight aluminium where it uses cans, KMS saves about

CREATIVE HEAD IRELAND

22/04/2021 10:25

1.4 tonnes of aluminium each year. This focus is nothing new, however; Kao itself has been named one of the world’s most ethical companies by US think tank Ethisphere, for a record 15th consecutive year. The list recognises companies that have demonstrated outstanding performance in transparency, integrity, ethics, and compliance. The division is offering support to its salon partners to educate and help them make important changes to better their routines and the way they use products. There’s also a network of consultants with tailored suggestions of products and services with low environmental impact, along with eco tools and appliances. Alongside packaging and formula updates, nearly three-quarters of brands under the L’Oréal Professionnel Products Division are made in carbon-neutral sites. Its Salon Emotion programme has a Sustainability Toolkit available on its Access education platform, helping businesses with areas such as recycling. The plan for the L’Oréal Group, under its L’Oréal for the Future initiative, is that by 2025 100 per cent of L’Oréal plastic packaging will be recyclable, refillable or compostable. Wella’s European manufacturing facility has moved to ‘zero waste to landfill’, using a 100 per cent renewable electricity supply, and 100 per cent carbon-neutral gas consumption, alongside revamps to colour packaging. It’s also partnered with Green Salon Collective, a recycle and recovery scheme, to support 10,000 salons within its network on sustainability. As perhaps the biggest professional hair brand with its roots in sustainability, Aveda continues to push itself in terms of responsible packaging (it uses 100 per cent post-consumer recycled materials), green chemistry (it’s now 100 per cent vegan) and responsible sourcing and manufacturing. Aveda was the first beauty company to be Cradle to Cradle certified for its commitment to sustainable products, packaging and production.

USE IT AGAIN

There are practical decisions you can make that will have a big impact, with changing your attitude towards waste and recycling the first step. Single-use towels might seem counterintuitive, but the manufacture of one Scrummi towel uses 10 per cent of the energy needed to wash a cotton towel in-salon, and for every tree cut down to make a Scrummi towel, two are planted. These biodegradable towels can cut both electric and water usage, detergent and fresh

CREATIVE HEAD IRELAND

SustainabilityIreland.indd 2

towel costs, staff time and washing machine maintenance, saving you money as well as energy and waste. And brands are lining with Green Salon Collective, a recycle and recovery scheme, to educate and support its salon accounts, including Authentic Beauty Concept and Wella Professionals. In March, the Local Enterprise Offices network launched its new Green for Micro programme (visit localenterprise.ie/green), supported by Enterprise Ireland, to help prepare small businesses for a greener economy. With the help of a green consultant, salons will get free advice and technical support on resource efficiency and how to better understand their carbon footprint. They will also get advice on how to implement an environmental management system to reduce costs and lower emissions. Other benefits may include increased savings, improved resource efficiency, opportunities for higher and additional value to products and services, increased access to customers, and an improved image in the eyes of potential clients.

The Orange Room, Drogheda, Co.Louth Mary Murtagh always put sustainability at the heart of her business. “From the time The Orange Room launched 15 years ago, I wanted our gowns and towels to be biodegradable and we’ve always had a green electricity plan.” KMS’s environmentally-friendly products, increasingly minimal packaging and transparency dovetailed with her ethos from the start. “Like any hairdressers, we go through so much material – recyclable and non-recyclable – so we really appreciate KMS’s compact, minimalistic approach. The products are wonderful to work with but Kao’s commitment to the environment is certainly something that drew me to the brand. I always think of what I can do through my business when my son tells me what he’s been learning about climate change at school and I think of how urgently things need to be done now in order to preserve the planet for his generation. It is good to know that the haircare brand I partner with is playing its part.” Her customers are also sustainably minded. “People between 25 and 40 are our biggest ‘green’ client base. I’m often asked about sulphates and whether packaging is recyclable. I think natural ingredients and pared-back, simple packaging are more attractive to them than ever before, fancy packaging isn’t as impressive. Clients are very well-informed and it is great to be able to give them peace of mind.” She also appreciates being able to marry self-care with care for the environment. “People can feel good knowing that their little time to themselves is not adversely affecting the planet.”

22/04/2021 15:03

Stylistic Hair Salon, Galway Green Salon Collective member Valerie Kelly is always looking for ways to make her Galway salon more eco-friendly. In 2014 she partnered with Swedish hair colour brand Natulique, which has prioritised sustainable practices since the ‘90s and dispatches products with BPA-free, fully recyclable packaging. She’s diligent about researching ways to work more sustainably. While looking for ways to recycle the considerable hair and product waste every salon has more efficiently, she came across the Green Salon Collective. “It offers a pay-as-you-go collection service for waste so it doesn’t add to my bills. I really appreciate how much it recycles, from the foil, to the tubes and the colour.” Her staff members are also very environmentally aware and enthusiastic about embracing new measures. “It’s a combined effort, my staff share my values and love looking at new ways to be more environmental.”

THE SUSTAINABLE SHOPPING LIST Scrummi offers a range of super-absorbent waffle towels available in black or white and all 100 per cent biodegradable, as are its colour removal wipes and new capes, too. scrummi.com

A TOUCH OF LUXE

SEEKING AN INDULGENT EXPERIENCE WITH SUPER-SUSTAINABLE CREDENTIALS? UPGRADE TO SCRUMMI DISPOSABLE TOWELS FOR ECO-FRIENDLY LUXURY SALONS ARE SOME of the biggest polluters on the high street, from high electricity and water usage through to the amount of chemicals used, but with a few small changes you can make a big difference. Disposable towels are one such switch that has gained in popularity recently, particularly given the impact of Covid-19. But the quality isn’t always there – they can be flimsy and fail to exude the luxurious appeal of your business. Scrummi towels are different. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2020, it’s Europe’s favourite brand of sustainable salon towel for a reason. Founder Rob Cooper is an environmentallyfocused, fourth-generation textile entrepreneur who wanted to use his background and knowledge in disposable textiles to make a global difference. A chance conversation with a Scottish salon owner brought his attention to the environmental damage caused by laundering towels, highlighting the need for a credible, sustainable alternative to cotton. Scrummi’s ultra-plush, waffle-textured salon towels are now stocked by thousands of salons across the globe. It’s no mean feat to combine

100 per cent sustainably sourced plant fibres to create a towel which feels luxurious and substantial while still being fully biodegradable – yet somehow Rob and the Scrummi team have nailed it. It may feel counterintuitive, but disposable towels offer a huge reduction in water and electricity usage. Salons that switch to Scrummi can save more than 1,400kg of CO2 emissions each year by ditching their usual laundry habits, and also save up to 50 per cent of their usual spend on washing and re-using towels. Scrummi is the only certified biodegradable disposable towel brand in the world, and the brand continues to push boundaries with the introduction of its new Biocape, a biodegradable salon cape which was developed during the first lockdown. A switch to Scrummi is also lending support to a brand which contributes to an ethical production chain with no signs of slowing down – there are plans to remove all plastic from its packaging by 2022, with more than 80 per cent of products now shipped in plastic-free packaging. The future of sustainable salon service is in your hands.

“Scrummi towels are fantastic, they absorb so much water from the hair, they feel and look amazing around guests’ shoulders. I highly recommend!” Paul Hession, owner, Hession Hairdressing

“Finding the right partner to help us grow our business was imperative to our survival”

Deidre Monks Nicola Lawless

*Treatwell

The Hair company, broadstone, Dublin When we opened in September 2018, we were very conscious that we were a little fish in a big pond, so finding the right partner to help us grow our business was imperative to our survival. After extensive research we decided that Treatwell had all of the attributes that we needed to help us to become a successful business, and they have delivered on each of their promises to date. Although we had extensive experience in the hairdressing industry, it became quickly apparent that working as an employee in a salon is very different to building a brand, from the ground up. So this was something that we had to learn really quickly and we felt the support from Treatwell at each step along our journey. We also don’t have the luxury of passing trade where we’re situated, so our online presence within the Treatwell platform helped drive our business enormously. The Treatwell platform has been instrumental to the ongoing success of The Hair Company, and we look forward to having it help us to bring our business to the next level.

“over 26 weeks we had 2,500 appointments made online, 47 per cent out of hours”

Orla Greene Shaun Moriaty The greene room, clare and tipperary

“I never thought an online shop would be such a great revenue stream, and this year in particular it has been amazing”

We have had some form of an electronic book in the salon environment since 2010. We used it mainly for tracking appointments, but not necessarily using a lot of the numerous other features. Needless to say, the quality of data we held was not in great shape. Over the intervening years, we went through phases of being very good with keeping it updated and not very good. Then we changed over to Phorest in mid-2019 and we have not looked back. It was a complete mindset shift for us and an Revo Hair & Beauty, Cork opportunity to change our practices. Having the Phorest App for our team members on their own phones meant they could Not a lot of people knew about us or our location, and update the client cards as the colour developed rather than we wanted more new clients. We spoke to Digital scrambling with bits of paper at the end of the day. We Salon and we realised the first step in moving our also have more control over our stock levels and from business online was to get our own modern, mobilethe client viewpoint, in addition to booking online friendly website and an eye-catching online shop. through the Phorest Portal we also have the We were nervous, but the support and feedback Digital Salon branded Phorest app. Over a 26-week period gave us was amazing. It was stress-free and everything seemed in 2019, we had some 2,500 appointments so easy. The site gives us a great platform to showcase our made online, with 47 per cent of these work, our team, any offers we have and our salon as made outside of normal trading hours. a whole. The online shop has been huge. I never thought it would be such a great revenue stream for the business, and this year in particular it has been really amazing. When I think of the benefits of our own site versus a Facebook page, there’s no comparison. More new client bookings, more gift voucher sales, the shop has been an excellent addition and we’ve introduced online bookings. You cannot underestimate the credibility your own branded site gives you. We see so many more new clients and it’s because they trust us after being on our site, seeing our team, our prices and even what the salon looks like.

Salon rouge, inchicore, dublin I realised four years ago that if I didn’t go online I wouldn’t have a business in four years’ time, I felt I had no other option. I found that Treatwell was affordable, it was easy to use and helped us move from using pieces of paper to using our iPad and mobile phones to take bookings on the app. The year we moved to Treatwell our service sales went up by more than 30 per cent. Our clients make bookings throughout the night without us needing to speak to them about prices and times available. The fact that clients could leave reviews meant that we had to give a five-star service and this helped us pinpoint and work on any issues within the salon. The salon’s Facebook, Instagram and website are all linked with our Treatwell Connect calendar, meaning that customers can book from many locations online. Most importantly Treatwell saves me time, and as a salon owner I don’t have a lot of time! With the pandemic, when we could open, we had to cut down on paper as much as we could. Having Treatwell set up meant each stylist could come into the salon each morning, take an iPad and use this to check and update all of their appointments and client notes throughout the day, without needing to touch anything else.

“I opened in June 2019, I joined Treatwell in July 2019 and my customers doubled overnight!”

Jacob Lindie

Heads High, London When I opened my salon a friend told me about Treatwell. I joined the next month and embraced everything it had to “It’s offer. I already had regular clients but there was a lot of time in the day where the part-time staff had nothing booked. I wonderful was sceptical at first but the impact on the number of clients through the door was clear – my customers doubled to finish overnight! About three months on, I looked at my return rate and I thought: ‘Well, I met all these people through a post with Treatwell!’ I’ve got one lady who comes for a tint and blow-dry every three weeks, and a cut every second appointment – that’s a £100 bill (€116) every three weeks, all thanks to Treatwell. I’ve been able to expand ‘link in bio to and, if it wasn’t for Treatwell, a lot of my staff would be sitting with empty columns. I’ve got the Book shop’. It has Now link on my Instagram and on my website. A lot of people don’t make phone calls anymore and saved us from any they don’t want to do the back and forth of emails. Once it’s booked online, I get a notification. If redundancies or it’s a new client it’ll tell you straight away. They get an automated email, written by me, which reduction in hours” explains you need to have a skin test 48 hours before your appointment. There’s a marketing option too, which connects all of your databases. When Covid-19 hit I thought: ‘this is why we do this.’ If you’re having a quiet day you can offer clients a little discount. In October, I had a quiet patch so I put a marketing offer out and 10 people took it up. All of my staff are self-employed, and this helps me keep track of their takings so I know what to charge them. They all have the app and they can even add their own promotions.

Michelle Robinson

Aviary Beauty & Hair, Co. Kildare We made a real effort to move our salon online. First, Digital Salon built a website for us, which helped us feel more comfortable with the digital world. We realised it wasn’t as scary as we had imagined, it’s an amazing shop window where potential clients can see everything before deciding to book. The next step was setting up online bookings. Recently we set up an online shop and I can honestly say that without it my business wouldn’t have survived being shut down during the past year. It gave me a platform to post daily content on new product launches and ‘how to’ tips. It’s wonderful to finish a post with ‘link in bio to shop’. “We booked more It has saved us from any redundancies or reduction in hours for the than €29,000-worth of team. Digital Salon creates ‘Managed Marketing’ packages, appointments in a day, which are really affordable online tools designed for hair collecting €2,900 in deposits!” and beauty and to suit salons of all sizes. It gave us the perfect mix of social media ads and Google Ads to help us promote the salon and online shop to a whole world of So Hairdressing, Maidstone new clients. Like many salons, we were nervous about booking up the diary and then having to reschedule masses of appointments if reopening was delayed. We used the marketing suite in The Salon App to text clients and encourage online booking. This removed the need to call and collected online deposits automatically to generate valuable cash flow. Salon App lets us select only the clients who missed appointments made during lockdown. We contacted them first, giving them 48 hours before opening up the diary. The response was extraordinary; we booked more than £25,000-worth (€29,000) of appointments in a day, collecting £2,500 (€2,900) in deposits! We then sent a text to regular clients and filled the diary for the first five weeks. But if we get shutdown again, we have space to reschedule clients. We could not do this without The Salon App. We spent a few minutes setting up, put our feet up and watched the diary fill up!
