It’s lucky that we thrive on being busy here at Creative HEAD, because what a hectic few months it’s been! In September we hosted the Most Wanted and The It List Awards in London, a glittering affair celebrating the very best in British and Irish hairdressing, where Lloyds Hair lifted the Best Salon Team trophy and Dylan Bradshaw was crowned an Exceptional Stylist legend (find the full list of winners on page 14). There have been plenty of other chances for Irish hairdressers to show off too, from the ALFAPARF Milano Fantastic Hairdresser Awards to the Wella TrendVision Award UK and Ireland final – catch up on all the latest on page 44. And, of course, we’ve just hosted our first ever Salon Smart Dublin. It was a whole day of business networking filled with inspirational speakers and enlightened discussion. Turn to page 22 to absorb some of the wisdom shared from the sessions, and then start thinking about how you can make 2020 your most successful year yet. Have a wonderful Christmas – try to get some downtime during the rush – and I’ll see you in the New Year!

FOR THE FIRST time ever, Creative HEAD’s business networking event, Salon Smart, hit Irish shores in partnership with L’Oréal Professionnel. For 13 years the event has taken place in London, inspiring salon owners to get the best out of their businesses. But at the Radisson Blu in Dublin, Irish hairdressers came together to learn from each other. Speakers including the teams from Lloyds Hair and Zeba Hairdressing raised important issues such as the black market, chair rental and education. Delegates also found out about the latest innovations from L’Oréal Professionnel, before a special closing act. Having launched a product line and two salons together, Paul Percival and Adam Reed are going their separate ways and spoke about their work with refreshing honesty. THE NEWS AND KNOW-HOW FROM YOUR INDUSTRY

House of Holland

The edit

THIS SPRING/SUMMER London Fashion Week celebrated dressed hair and quirky, individual touches. S/S20 began at Mark Fast with elaborately braided ponytails designed by TIGI European session director Maria Kovacs. Braids were also big news at Bora Aksu, with twin plaits designed by Tina Outen for L’Oréal Professionnel, and spiky single plaits at Erdem, created by Most Wanted Session Stylist Anthony Turner for L’Oréal Professionnel and Dyson. Braiding featured at the Preen by Thornton Bregazzi show, where Eugene Souleiman for Wella Professionals focused on individualised styles. The Fashion For Relief show saw Johnnie Sapong’s Leonor Greyl team also opt for lots of individual styles, as did Adam Reed for ghd at House of Holland. Meanwhile we saw the opposite effect at Sharon Wauchob under Neil Moodie for L’Oréal Professionnel’s watchful eye, as male and female models embodied modern androgyny with poker-straight, sleek hair. Accessories caught our eye at Paula Knorr as ANTI’s Nick Irwin used nonchalant placements of trinket-like clips and headbands for a cool-girl feel. Elsewhere, super-long ponytails got two extreme treatments – Sam McKnight’s were crimped to perfection using the Ceramic Crimping Iron from BaByliss PRO for Halpern. While Syd Hayes for BaByliss PRO was joined by Redken global creative color director, Josh Wood, getting their hands dirty at Matty Bovan as ponies were dipped in Farrow & Ball paint, the perfect contrast to the dreamy blonde hues.

CROWN HAIR AND BEAUTY

Viennese whirl for Goldwell Vienna – home of opera, Mozart and numerous other creative endeavours, felt like the perfect setting for Goldwell’s 2019 Global Zoom finale, which included the Color Zoom competition, open to Irish salons for the first time. Among salons attending were The Orange Room, Black Amber, The David Marshall Academy, Red Apple Hairdressing, Black Angel Hair Salon and Biba Hair Salon, hosted by distributor Trinity Salon Partners. It proved to be a poignant event, with the announcement that this would be the last Global Zoom, with a new, revamped experience to be unveiled in 2020. Singapore scooped Color Zoom gold in the New Talent and Partner categories, while Russia claimed gold for Creative Colorist. More than 3,000 guests from across the world saw the new HAIR | Color | Style brand statement, a style bible for Goldwell’s coming year, as well as launches from Goldwell, KMS and Oribe, and the latest acquisition, tool brand VARIS.

NEW HAIR CONFEDERATION UNVEILED THE HAIR AND BEAUTY Industry Confederation (HABIC) has been launched with the aim of representing, supporting and promoting the sector and combatting the black market. The nonprofit body aims to highlight the economic contribution the sector makes, which has been valued at €2 billion – similar to the value of the Irish motor industry. At the launch, which was held at The Crypt in Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin, HABIC chief executive Margaret O’Rourke Doherty, said: “Organisations within the industry are no longer competing on a level playing ground, because many are being significantly undermined by a black market that is thriving.”

We have so many exciting things coming up to treat our clients this Christmas! We are planning a customer evening with prosecco, goody bags and lucky dip prizes, and going-out hair, make-up and cocktail packages. We’re extending our opening hours and doing a fundraiser for Down Syndrome Ireland as well.

DANIELLE GARDNER WILDFLOWER

We are in the middle of a renovation that will allow us more space. We’ve created a new toning zone at the basins and a colour therapy area for consultations. We’re also hosting a Wild Swap in Wildflower, where we will educate guests on fast fashion and how to repair clothes, and they can pick up a preloved item too.

The class of #MWIT19 dine out THE WINNERS OF the 2019 Most Wanted and The It List Awards gathered together at the super-cool Coal Drops Yard in the redeveloped King’s Cross area of London to celebrate their achievements. A month to the day following the awards, the dinner at Hicce was a chance for the attendees to get to know their fellow trophy holders, including Legends Dylan Bradshaw, Sophia Hilton and Lloyds Hair. WHY DID YOU WANT TO BECOME A HAIRDRESSER? I always felt that hairdressing was where my creativity lies. I love that it puts me in a position that allows me to help people boost their self-esteem and feel happy, and I find this so rewarding. I like that no two days in the salon are the same, the diversity of clients and the constantly changing industry keeps things interesting.

HAYLEY DAVIES SOCIETY SALONS IRELAND AGE: 23

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR HIGHLIGHTS SO FAR? I’ve really enjoyed my training – my progression from a beginner to a junior stylist under a great mentor and a fantastic salon team. I have completed the ALFAPARF Milano colour specialist course, which was a highlight because colour is a passion of mine. Last year I took part in the ALFAPARF Milano Fantastic Hairdressing competition, I was third in the Fantastic Junior category – a real accomplishment for me.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS’ TIME? In a position where I can educate as I love helping people to grow and I love sharing knowledge. I assist our weekly in-salon training and enjoy sharing colour theory knowledge and the techniques that helped me when I was training.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM HAIRDRESSING GIG? To work alongside Sophia Hilton for the day. Sophia’s passion for hairdressing is infectious. Sharing and giving back knowledge is something she loves doing, I would love to inspire other trainees in the industry in the same way one day.

Inside story MENSPIRE DUBLIN 2

The brand mission of MENSPIRE is to fuse premium male grooming with the level of service offered in women’s hair salons, and the latest outpost is in Dublin 2. Founder Glenn McGoldrick explains: “We actually decided to open two businesses. Our MENSPIRE Academy is right next door to the new salon. Essentially it was one massive premises that we made into two.” It took a year to fit out, with issues ranging from the discovery of asbestos to difficulties laying the floor. But the end result is a minimalist paradise, which reflects the Menspire philosophy: “Our brand is built around clean living and a healthy lifestyle and we want the clients to sense that. l like my salons to look as white and clinical as possible. This coupled with some greenery really makes for an organic and fresh experience.” Every last detail has been thought of, creating a stylish and uncluttered atmosphere where guests can relax. “We used a concrete wall on both sides of the premises which really looks smart with the high ceilings,” says Glenn. “We also used metal trays to hide the cables. All of that coupled with a smooth grey floor really looks fresh and modern. My favourite piece is the logo on the back wall – there’s nothing like brand awareness!”

THE BUSINESS EDIT

THE IMPORTANCE OF

GIVING BACK THE POWER OF salons as a force for good has long been celebrated – we all know haircuts can change lives and hairdressers can become close confidantes. But some salons and initiatives are going above and beyond helping others, spreading positivity and winning over new clients in the process. For Jenny Byrne, owner of You’re Gorgeous Hair, working with local charities and businesses is incredibly important. “We always give gift certificates for every charity event, some for as much as €250. This helps the charity to push sales of tickets for their event, and as a business we get great marketing coverage from them,” she explains. “It also gives us an opportunity to grow our client base. It’s important to work with our local communities as they are your bread and butter.” At Kelly Leung Hair Design in Malahide, Co. Dublin, envelopes are kept in the salon for customers who are in a position to donate their used hair extensions to The Little Princess Trust, which makes wigs for young people with hair loss. “We work with hair all day long and we know just how important it is for people and their confidence,” say directors Beth Kelly and Emma Leung. “Hair loss is traumatic at any age but it’s particularly hard for young people. So it’s important to support The Little Princess Trust in any way we can.” “What struck a chord with us is that Great Lengths is the only hair extensions brand that can be donated after removal to The Little Princess Trust to make real hair wigs for children because it’s not chemically processed,” they add. “Encourage your clients to donate their extensions to the charity – it’s such a shame to see good hair go in the bin when it could make a real difference and provide a wig made of real hair to a child in need.” Beauty in All its Forms is a joint initiative from ALFAPARF Milano and

Down Syndrome Ireland, where salons train adults with Down Syndrome as hairdressing assistants. “Since I’ve been given the opportunity to teach the course it has changed my outlook on life in a very positive way as the students are so expressive and enthusiastic when it comes to learning new skills,” explains Ger Hand, technical manager at ALFAPARF Milano. “There are many reasons why salons wish to get involved in this programme, but the key point is that they feel it’s very important that everybody is given opportunities in employment.” John Mulligan from Kilmacow near Waterford is one of the participants who secured employment as an assistant at Lloyds Hair. “The training was great and I learnt lots – how to fold towels, cleaning and washing hair,” he explains. “Getting a job with Lloyds Hair has made me feel happy and confident.” This year marks the 50th birthday of salon group Peter Mark, and the team wanted to observe the occasion by hosting the Petermarkathon. Each salon was tasked with finding a way to raise funds for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland. “We wanted to do something that would give back to the communities we work in and, of course, mark our 50th year in a really positive, impactful way,” explains Louise Keaveney, director at Peter Mark. “Getting teams to pick the ways to help really resonates with them so they will support it 100 per cent.” Doing charity work and integrating your salon into the local community doesn’t just benefit the recipients of your goodwill – your salon team will be stronger for it, and you can promote your salon at the same time. “Don’t sit and wait for new guests to come to you,” says Jenny Byrne. “We all know that not every stylist is fully booked every day, so why not utilise their time by giving back and helping them grow their clientele?”

LIFE LESSONS

LISA ECCLES ZINC HAIR

Be patient. Training takes time but it’s worth it. Then when you qualify the real work begins. Never stop trying to be better. Our industry is constantly evolving and if you don’t attend courses and consistently try to improve yourself, you will either be left behind or become bored and lazy. Reach out to your peers and network. Try and link up with other salon owners for advice and understanding. It can be a lonely place as a salon owner, and without the support I received from others I probably would have given up. Listen to every bit of advice given to you but make your own decisions. If someone gives you advice, the chances are it’s because they have experience in that area. This doesn’t always mean it’s going to be right for you and your business but it can help your decision making. Get involved in your industry. One of the best things I ever did was join the Irish Hairdressing Federation. It offers amazing events and a support network.

And this year it came to Dublin for the first time, giving Irish salon owners the opportunity to experience this unique event. Hairdressers flocked to the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel for a day of networking, learning and inspiration, exclusively sponsored by L’Oréal Professionnel. With an all-star line-up of business trailblazers from across Ireland and the UK, no topic was off limits as stories of successes and failures were shared with laughter and tears along the way…

“We are the experts. It makes me angry that bloggers have more of a voice than us. That’s what pushes me forward” SABRINA HILL, OWNER OF KOPPER HAIR SALON, CORK

With three businesses under her belt that have all rapidly expanded thanks to social media, there isn’t much Sabrina doesn’t know about digital presence. When the opportunity came in 2004 to take over Kopper Hair Salon, Sabrina took it. Realising the potential online, she grew a following of more than 25,000 on social media before Instagram exploded in 2010. Now Sabrina employs a team of 26 and has strong, practical views on social media strategy.

“When it comes to educating I always say: ‘Be passionate, be patient.’ Everyone learns at a different pace. Education is about a mindset”

“The main objective was to make clients feel they belong. I used nostalgic colours to evoke happy memories and create an area they can’t resist Instagramming”

Award-winning colourist and expert educator James has risen through the ranks to become one of Ireland’s most prolific names. James talked about his salon’s colour space, team and service and how client feedback allowed them to tailor it to suit and how education keeps them ahead. “Stimulating imagination and creativity is what we’re all about.”

An international colour artist and educator, Siobhan shared her wisdom and energy about her decision to leave celebrated UK chain Headmasters to open her own boutique salon, Rose & Wild. “It was a big step but I needed something else,” she said. “I kept asking myself: ‘Am I doing certain things because I’m influenced, or because I want to?’ It’s about the buzz. We have to pick the right trends for us and our brand.”

#SalonSmartIRE “We are thrilled to bring Salon Smart to Dublin. It is such an exciting and unique opportunity for salon owners and managers to share ideas and knowledge constructively and productively” CATHERINE HANDCOCK, PUBLISHER OF CREATIVE HEAD IRELAND

After 12 years of running Salon Smart in the UK – and the event selling out time after time – it felt important to share the opportunity with Irish salon owners and managers too, thanks to exclusive sponsor L’Oréal Professionnel. “And the timing could not be better,” said Catherine. “The Irish industry is facing some challenges but the response from salon owners across the Republic has been both creative and powerful. It has been good to share those stories today.”

“Moving away from buying to connecting is what makes us human… think about a lasting and meaningful experience you can give someone” MONICA TEODORO, GENERAL MANAGER OF L’ORÉAL PROFESSIONNEL UK & IRELAND

After an interactive opening that saw Monica get everyone on their feet, the audience was in the palm of her hand as she spoke about staying current but also the risk of digital burnout. “People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. People will never forget how you made them feel. You can’t pick up feelings in a box of colour. True connection is your USP, it’s what makes you unique.”

CREATIVE HEAD IRELAND SALON SMART DUBLIN2.indd 4

“Ireland has such a wealth of hairdressing brilliance, it’s exciting to be able to bring an event like this to Dublin. I know it’s only going to get bigger and better”

“Hairdressing has always been a way of life for us. It can be a lonely journey as a business owner without someone to bounce ideas off”

Anna shared her enthusiasm and admiration for salons that are big on brand and provide exceptional experiences, shining a spotlight on a trio of success stories. The audience heard about sustainable Sligo salon Locks & Lace, whose holistic approach has captivated the market; Cut & Sew, the Dublin barbering brand that sells a lifestyle as well as great cuts; and Aberdeen destination salon Linton & Mac.

‘Family first’ is something the owners of Zeba Hairdressing believe in and it’s proved a recipe for success. Paul Dromgoole, his wife Angie and his brother Richard celebrated 25 years in business last year. With three salons in Dublin and one in Maynooth, Zeba employs 70 staff. Their secret? “Investing in your team is an investment in the future,” explained Paul. “We’ve had very organic growth and we’re incredibly proud of that.”

C I A R C E H ALL T

Salon Smart is always a hotbed for salon owners sharing their advice and woes about business and salon life, and Dublin turned up the temperature. Salon owners from across Ireland and the UK came together to talk shop, inspire each other and consider practical changes they can make to improve their businesses. In the Great Debate, the theme was time: how to manage it, how to get a return on your investment, and how to use it to make sure you still have plenty of it to enjoy life outside of the salon. Led by Creative HEAD publisher Catherine Handcock; Casey Coleman, owner of CHAIR salons, Dylan Bradshaw, owner of Dylan Bradshaw; Richard Phillipart, owner of The Boutique Atelier; Carla Rose McQuillan, co-owner of The.Space; and Mark O’Keeffe, founder of Brown Sugar; revealed their tips and tricks for beating the clock. At the Think Tank session in the afternoon, a new line-up took to the stage to play agony aunt to frustrated owners. David Campbell, co-owner of House of Colour; Paul Davey, co-owner of Davey Davey; Sara Holmes, business director of Stuart Holmes Salon; Danielle Kennedy, co-owner of Lloyds Hair; and Margaret O’Rourke Doherty, network manager of Image Skillnet; took questions. Topics ranged from how to stop clients buying products online to chair rental, with panellists offering practical business advice.

OD!

With everyone’s minds properly sated after a morning of inspiring talks and incredible insight, it was time to refuel the body with some delicious food. But at Salon Smart there is always an opportunity for guests to experience more. Cue The Working Lunch – a 90-minute networking session with exclusive sponsor L’Oréal Professionnel, plus a side order of some very tasty meatballs. Hosted by a mix of L’Oréal Professionnel business experts, educators and ambassadors, delegates were able to learn about the brand’s new product innovations, business support and training opportunities. But taking centre stage was a demonstration of the SteamPod 3.0, the third generation of the brand’s original patented professional steam styler. Showing off the slick technology was Ultan Keena from L’Oréal Professionnel and Mike Szerszen from Zeba Hairdressing. Drawing a crowd, the stylists showed how to use the professional styler, transforming the locks of two models into shiny, silky-smooth hair perfection! Mark talked about the tool’s new integrated water tank, which makes it more travel friendly for those on the go, while Ultan shared insight into the tool’s lighter, thinner and more easy-to-use design. The pair also spoke about SteamPod’s two Smoothing Creams: one for natural hair, the other for sensitised locks – both enriched with Pro-Keratine technology designed to prep, prime and protect the locks for long-lasting, smooth-feeling tresses.

What happens when a successful business comes to the end of its journey? Paul Percival and Adam Reed launched their iconic brand and first salon in 2007, with a product line following in 2011. But now the partnership is ending, and the duo discussed with honesty what they had faced. “There was a lot going on with the product company,” said Paul. “We were trying to deal with outside influences while enjoying and launching a second salon.” Adam agreed, saying a range of difficulties had added pressure to their venture – and yet, with his trademark optimism, remarked: “Not many marriages could have lasted through all this!” And the most important lesson? Communication. “If you’re lucky enough to have someone go on a journey with you, be kind and forgiving,” said Paul. “That’s how we’re still able to sit up here together.”

“THINK ABOUT what a lasting experience you can give someone,” Monica Teodoro, manager of L’Oréal Professionnel in the UK and Ireland, tasked the crowd at Salon Smart Dublin. “What’s your point of difference? What makes you the person your client chooses?” Between shifting consumer behaviour, changes in working patterns and technological leaps, the way we live and shop now can’t be compared with that of a decade ago. So how do salons and brands find any footing? While many look to social media and the internet for inspiration, Monica talked about the reality of digital burnout. “People come first. Personalisation and the art of connection. The people in your chair – that’s your currency,” she said. “Technology dictates what we are looking at but it’s your professional advice and expertise that will win clients.” Tech has only revved up consumers’ desire to have things how they want, when they want. Yet until computers can start cutting hair, salons are safe… in theory. And the way salons stay safe is by choosing to swim against the tide that’s washing outdated retailers away. It’s about finding your niche. It’s about creating a seamless process that can shift and flex to fit around your customers’ new lives. More than anything, it’s about reminding clients of that human connection and community.

After the success of its consumer-oriented app Style My Hair, L’Oréal Professionnel has stepped things up a gear with Style My Hair Pro for salons. The original Style My Hair was named by a leading UK newspaper as one of 2019’s must-have apps. Building on a makeover concept, Style My Hair Pro delivers a three-in-one consultation tool to help transform your salon consultation experience. Clients can ‘try on’ colour transformations before their very eyes, thanks to clever AR technology. Swipe and experiment with different shades before settling on the perfect look, erasing any unease or miscommunication from the off. Featuring everything from ombre and balayage to the latest trending colours, you can advise and mutually decide on the best look before any colour is even applied. BUT WER POSITION TO PO AN INCREDIBLE LUTIONS AND GIVE SO UP, OFFER REAL IR SMILE THE CLIENTS BACK MORE THAN EVER before we are aware of the impact of image on mental health and wellbeing, and clients experiencing hair loss can find the changes affect them deeply. Aidan Fitzgerald salon in Blackrock, Dublin, specialises in treating hair loss, as owner Aidan explains: “The clients we look after tend to have hair loss caused by chemotherapy treatment and alopecia, but stress is also a cause, as well as auto-immune diseases.” But how do you broach such a sensitive subject? Aidan believes taking your time in consultation and a honest, open approach is best. Liz Murphy, owner of No.5 Natural Organic in Malahide, agrees. “The more we speak about it, the more the client feels he or she is not experiencing this alone, and that in fact it is common to have these concerns.” Creating a calm atmosphere

is crucial, something Liz has cultivated at her salon, particularly through private consultation areas for clients with concerns. A tailored regime – one that includes in-salon treatments at the backwash – can really help clients who are struggling with hair loss. Nioxin has customised its products to tackle hair thinning from many different angles. Sophie Ruggiero, Wella Professionals education manager, says: “Nioxin is skincare for your scalp, which essentially is an extension of the skin on your face. To ensure you have the best environment for hair to grow, Nioxin works on the three Ds: derma, density and diameter.” So with a little TLC, the right products and a gentle approach, you can help your clients feel so much better about their hair and boost their self-esteem.

We have turned down some amazing stylists in the past because they are used to working in an environment where they are revered and get special treatment, whereas everyone gets treated the same at Lloyds Hair and we all operate under the same rules. At the moment we only do interviews for front of house and managers as we stopped doing interviews for stylists and trainees a few years ago. Now they just do a trial for a few hours – it’s a much better way to get to know them in a more relaxed setting. We get people starting out in the industry to come in for three hours and work on the floor assisting. We watch how they use their initiative and how they get 2019 on with other team members.

Then I detail our values and what would be expected from them. For stylists and junior stylists, we get them to do a colour service and have a chat while the colour develops. We suggest a change to something in their technique during the trial and see how well they respond. This is really important to us as we are constantly up-skilling and progressing and we need team members who are open to this.

CHI: How do you use education to keep staff members motivated and challenged? Is this the key to keeping them with you long term? DK: We operate a business that’s forever changing so I think that’s been key to keeping our team motivated. Certainly continuous education and progression on a technical level is a big part of moving forward with an excited team. We try to keep our team engaged in our future as a company, as well as the industry overall and always give staff full transparency of what we are doing, where we are going and why. Maybe sometimes we even get them too involved, but it’s important that the team feels an ownership and that they each have a part to play.

CHI: You’re a really approachable boss and encourage your team to talk to you about issues they’re having at work. How do you create this open, honest atmosphere? DK: I’ll often go into the salon with a note of one or two team members that I feel I haven’t had a proper conversation with in a while and I will make it my business to have a genuine conversation with them that day or that week. Your time is always the most valuable thing you can give any member of your team. To be approachable, the number one tip I would give is to learn not to be reactive. You have to be prepared to hear the good and the bad, and sometimes even the infuriating gossip. Being approachable doesn’t mean you are liked and everyone’s best friend – that’s actually a sign of a weak manager in my book – but it does mean that your team know you are always fair.

CHI: What is your advice to salon owners who are struggling with a difficult staff member? Is this a situation you’ve found yourself in before? DK: We’ve all been in this situation from time to time. It’s very easy to just get annoyed with the team member and put it all back on them, but you have to remember that every

040-41_Lloyds.indd 2

relationship goes both ways, so if there’s an issue it’s at least 50 per cent your fault. I like to start from scratch with the person and lay out what I expect from them, what the boundaries are and what can I do for them to help them and build from there. If, after everything has been made clear, the same issues are still arising, then I will go back and remind them of the conversation, what was agreed and give a specific example of how their behaviour doesn’t reflect that.

CHI: Let’s talk fun stuff – Lloyds Hair is legendary for its group outings. Why are they so valuable to the team? DK: As valuable as the ‘big stuff’ is, it’s important to have a foundation that all the big stuff is built on, too. Days out, nights out and all that jazz doesn’t mean anything and will be lost on the team unless the foundations of trust and engagement are solid. Sometimes buying the team a cappuccino in the morning can be just as meaningful as a big night out. I’m a huge fan of the author Simon Sinek, and his theories on consistency versus intensity in relationships. Learning more about this has really opened my eyes to consciously balancing the big ‘once a year’ things with the everyday things that form trust and transparency. Then, when you have all this, there’s nothing better than a big blow-out to solidify yourselves as team and strengthen the team bond further.

TV STAR VERNON KAY and legendary Wella favourite Patrick Cameron led a fresh vibe at the 2019 Wella TrendVision Award UK & Ireland Final, held at London’s iconic Roundhouse. From the enormous video screen box to the central round stage, it was not business as usual for the 800 guests, illustrated further by the triple threat of creative presentations. Sassoon Academy explored its rich 65-year heritage in MonoFlouro, inspired by the work of Bauhaus master Josef Albers. There was an embarrassment of riches as the Collaborate presentation saw Crow Street Collective by Darren Lacken, HOB Salons, Sanrizz, Lara Johnson Lifestyle, Charlie Taylor, Goldsworthy’s and D&J Ambrose celebrate diversity in beauty. Finally, Wella UK & Ireland technical director Robert Eaton and his team from Russell Eaton unveiled Celestial, an otherworldly presentation that made the most of those huge video screens. It was then on to reveal the winners, with the Irish and UK Gold Creative and Color Artist victors set to enjoy a trip to Seville early next year for the International TrendVision Award Creative Retreat.

FINALISTS IN THE third Great Lengths Awards in Ireland came together for a stylish ceremony in the Morrison Hotel, Dublin. Despite the rain, guests arrived at the fabulous reception dressed up and full of excitement for a glass or two of fizz before sitting down for a three-course dinner. Glenda Gilson of Xposé fame was host for the evening, and invited each winner to take to the stage and collect their trophy. The judging panel included Irish Tatler online editor Amy Heffernan, IMAGE beauty editor Holly O’Neill and Creative HEAD Ireland editor Anna Samson. The top prize went to extension extraordinaire Emma Leung of Kelly Leung Hair Design Malahide, who won the Great Lengths Trophy for Extension Excellence. And once the tables were cleared away it was time to party, with Riff Shop playing to a packed dancefloor before Great Lengths VIP January Russell slipped behind the decks for a DJ set that rounded off the night.

DECADE of delights THE ALFAPARF Milano Fantastic Hairdresser Awards celebrated its tenth year at the Royal Dublin Society in Ballsbridge, showcasing the best talent and business expertise of the Irish hairdressing industry. Stylist, designer and TV presenter Brendan Courtney welcomed 1,200 hairdressers, salon owners and their supporters to the evening, which saw more than 300 competitors prove their skills across 10 categories. The judges tasked with choosing the winners were Alessandro Fratini, international guest artist for ALFAPARF Milano; Fiona O’Brien, director of education at Fantastic Hairdresser; Vivica Davies, senior international education manager at ALFAPARF Milano; Jack Bayne, founder and creative director of Japonica; and Alan Edwards, founder of Alan Edwards Salons. This year also saw the inauguration of the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented to Valerie FinneganCahill of IKON Hair Design in Cork. Later in the evening, graduates from Beauty in all its Forms, a joint hairdressing training programme between ALFAPARF Milano and Down Syndrome Ireland, were presented with their certificates to a standing ovation. And to mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, ALFAPARF Milano global ambassador Paul Stafford created a multimedia show unlike any other. In classic Stafford style, the genre-defying Nico: A Berlin Odyssey told the story of parallel lives that share a youthful spirit. With hair inspired by different subcultures, and a pulsating soundtrack, the show was a celebration of freedom and the possibilities it offers for creativity throughout generations.
