EXPRESS YOURSELF! Individuality, originality, creative freedom… Creative HEAD took to Instagram to share the chance to form the cover shoot for the Christmas issue, the final edition of this unprecedented year. In partnership with Matrix, we invited creatives from across the UK – independent freelancers and salon-based stylists – to submit a short film that captured themselves and their vision, as we hunted out freethinking stylists buzzing with ideas and passion with stories to tell. We wanted each look from each artist to be a story of self-expression; their voice in visual form. What do you stand for as an artist? What fuels your creativity? What stamp do you want to leave on the hairdressing industry? It’s a blank page for these fiercely independent talents to showcase something that feels completely, authentically them – powered by Matrix and its mission to provide a creative playground for artists to express themselves completely. With two brilliant Matrix mentors – Lisa Farrall and Ria Kulik – there behind the scenes to support and nurture these individual and personal stories, this was a chance to follow their own brief, a wide open space of possibility… and that’s just the way we like it! The playground is open to all – the Matrix Colour Collective. This comprises inspirational, creative, individual and authentic colour specialists; a mix of eclectic, fresh and unique talent. The movement cultivates a community of hairdressers with different skills and levels of experience from all walks of life, all with a shared vision: to push the boundaries of hair. Whether a salon employee or a freelancer working independently, the Matrix Colour Collective welcomes hairdressers into its community who find inspiration through ideas and skills, sharing and learning from one another… just like this incredible shoot. Supported by Matrix education and an extensive professional colour and haircare portfolio, each individual can discover their own path, allowing them to be their true, authentic selves without ever feeling alone. Matrix Colour Collective is not a members-only club; it’s an open invitation to be a part of something bigger. A way for artists to come together in a welcoming community to explore, share ideas, create and learn from each other, while trying new and existing colour and retail with complete confidence. Doesn’t that sound inviting?

“I live, eat and breathe Matrix, and have done since I started training. I know that colour shade chart inside out! Since Matrix took me under its wing, I have felt part of this family. some of the stylists had never used Matrix before, so it was brilliant to be able to show them the range on offer” RIA
ON THE PROJECT “I’m really, really excited to be here. It’s such a good project to be part of, especially when it’s all about expressing yourself. I really want to see the artists’ personal stamps – who they are, what they’re all about. Everyone is so different, and it’s really good to see that individuality coming out and they can save it for themselves in this moment, on this shoot.” BEING A MENTOR “I’m quite aware not to try and push someone into doing what I think they should be doing. It’s their vision, it is what they want to do, and I’m here just to guide them.“ THE RESULTS! “I personally love colour, it’s my first love. There are a lot of exciting fashion colours coming through, lots of pink in there, and I’m really excited to see that in front of the camera.”

ON THE PROJECT “Education is really at the heart of me, I love doing it but to work with these talented hairdressers, it just feels so good. Usually I would be getting stuck in doing a model’s hair but for me it’s about just stepping back, helping others to get inspired and just having a bit of fun. I’ve got the easy job, I’m just there for jokes! BEING A MENTOR “It feels amazing to be a mentor. When you’re doing a shoot like this and you’re bringing all of these amazing hairdressers together, I think it’s so important to bring a sense of community. That’s
what this project is all about – we’re all in this together, we’re stronger together, we’re sharing inspiration, we’re sharing tips. This shoot really represents that vibe.” THE RESULTS! “Looking at the moodboards and then talking to each stylist, it’s really interesting to see – they’re ready to do something that represents their individual style, that is completely, authentically, unapologetically them, and it’s such a mix. Some of the team are commercial, some want to push it a little bit more. I’m excited to see their styles come to life, because they’re all so different.”

I love FEMININITY, but WITH AN edge. that pops for people to just look at and think: ‘Hmm, how did she do that?’. I’m inspired by a designer called Zimmermann. He’s all about beautiful, feminine shapes, and also patterns. MY CREATIVITY IS FUELLED BY Looking outside the industry – interior design, fashion, even being in bars and restaurants… I’m a socialite! I enjoy talking to people and entrepreneurs, looking at people on the street – especially in Camden. I would love to give back to the industry as much as I’ve received from other educators and creatives. I’d love to inspire more people to join the industry because there is so much to offer and so much to take from it. It’s a huge conFidence builder. let your work do the talking and your voice will follow.

I see everything in the chair, from day-to-day commercial to looks that are really quite edgy and punky, because being a bit different myself, you attract your own clientele. Do what you want, when you want to, and be proud of it. I stand for individuality – because as much as I want to put my own twist on my client’s hair, I want them to be individual. I don’t want her walking around with the same hair as all her friends. If I’m honest, I’m just a total hair geek. I can just look at a painting or a building, or sometimes just a person, and be inspired. be the best that you can be and show what you stand for, which for me is colour. You are own worst enemy. If you tell yourself you can’t do it, you never will. A positive mental attitude makes a massive difference – giving you the conFidence to be able to listen to yourself. So, make sure you go with it, not against it.

This look is very ’80s, very raw – a natural ambience and embrace of colour. Everything was done old-school: freehand, scrunching… it’s really just about being practical and using the physical element rather than the structural and visual side of colour. I wanted to get an almost fur-like effect on the hair, but still make it look really feminine and sexy. I just looked to see where I wanted to place the colour and put it right there. It’s like fox fur with a Warhol twist.

Colour is something I really like to experiment with, but I didn’t want to create anything scary. Think of an unconventional 2020 bride! I went in with the soft pink and the lilac, just to jazz it up and make it more contemporary. Then I ashed out the wig to give it a little more edge.

I’m known for making a weave look so real that you have to look twice! I own at least 30 wigs, and I probably have another 30 with my sisters. Rewind two years and nobody would admit TO WEARING ONE, whereas now it’s LIKE: ‘yeah it’s a wig, so what?’. It’s become fashionable AND AS A RESULT, I’VE been able to be a lot more creative. MY CREATIVITY IS FUELED BY The need to widen my horizons and to do things differently. For me it’s like: ‘okay cool, you’ve done this, let’s do something ELSE!’. I’m in competition with myself to do better. I STAND FOR MAKING women feel absolutely beautiful, no matter what hair they choose.

stand for freedom of identity, freedom of speech AND freedom from fear - FROM being judged in a very pretty world. I LIKE TO DO MY CREATIVE THINKING LOCKED IN MY BEDROOM, LISTENING TO Lana Del Rey. IF I COULD LEAVE A STAMP ON THE INDUSTRY, IT WOULD BE TO TEAR AparT THE CONCEPT OF BEAUTY. I am tired of seeing ‘pretty girls’ and ‘strong jawed men’ being projected into our lifestyles, creating unrealistic beauty standards on our population. MY ADVICE TO SOMEBODY STRUGGLING is TO Surround yourself with people who have similar views to you – the same ideology of how the world should be. It will dEFINITELY educate you AND HELP YOU TO GET TO WHERE YOU NEED TO BE. I have made a personal choice to only use queer people to model for my projects and creations as a celebration of the weird and wonderful humans in the world.

I chose to style my model, Dani as their drag persona, Well Hung Parliament, to show the underrated culture of drag kings; they just aren’t publicised as much as queens. Queer people are at the forefront of innovation in trend, authenticity, fashion and culture… it creates a subculture that runs into the mainstream and we never get credit for it! So, this story is a nod to queer rebellion. I wanted to take aspects of the ‘80s and ‘90s ballroom scenes with a queer punk vibe, destroying the binaries of gender. It’s just a real big gender-bending fashion moment of drag and queerness and pop punk vibes, intertwining into something that’s not really been seen before.

AND THIS IS MY SELF-EXPRESSION I wanted to do something completely different, the opposite of what I do on a day-to-day basis, which is everything from balayage to intense, vivid rainbows and never anything in between. So, I thought: ‘let’s do some really soft, dusty tones.’ I’m really into crystals – I have amethyst in the studio – and I wanted to mimic that dusty lilac colour with the pink core. Then add a wave that’s not as formal as a finger wave but it sets a tone of place. It’s all just really soft.

MY CREATIVITY IS FUELLED BY Google! I love the Google Doodles – when you click on the quote, you get other suggestions. THAT’S HOW I DISCOVERED CRYSTALS. I just kept clicking and seeing all these different colours, a total inspiration. MY ADVICE TO SOMEBODY TRYING TO FIND THEIR VOICE WOULD BE JUST TO Take time TO think about exactly what you’re going to do and where you want to go. My clientele is varied. I’ve got a lot of celebrity clients, I do a lot of wigs for celebrities and Ru Paul’s Drag Race. I do most of my creative thinking in the bath! I lay there as long as two hours – in all the vanillascented bubbles. I scroll through my phone, looking at other people’s work, and I just get thinking…

I’m very hard on myself. There’s always been A next BIG thing OR TREND – LIKE ombre OR balayage… I would like to be behind SOMETHING LIKE THAT AND LEAVE MY MARK ON THE INDUSTRY. THE ADVICE I WOULD GIVE TO SOMEBODY STRUGGLING TO FIND THEIR VOICE IS Just try TO FIND SOMETHING you’re good at and run with it. I do most of my creative thinking in the shower – it’s quiet, the sound of running water… ideas will always pop to me mid-hair wash, when I don’t have a pen around! Freedom is when someone sits in your chair and they say: ‘do whatever you want’. And I can really get creative and look at their style and lifestyle and bring out their personality in the best way.

I decided to go with the iconic Farrah Fawcett style from the ’70s – that blow-out but with a reference of a ’90s face frame, which has definitely come back into fashion. Because it’s an old-school look, I used an old-school technique; a classic blow-dry away from the face and then straight back on the rollers.

40 IT’S THE END of 2020 – and what a year it has been. With two lockdowns and a big question mark over the future, the Irish hairdressing industry has stepped up and dealt with everything that’s been thrown at it, with grit and determination. To prepare for 2021 and the challenges it may bring, we have put together a toolkit of all the support, ideas and motivation you need to keep your business on track over the coming months – find it on page 30. But we’ve not forgotten a little creative inspiration, too, with beautiful new work from Zeba and a closer look at Richard Phillipart’s models from Salon Smart Live (which you can watch on demand, by the way!). Still want more? Creative HEAD has launched a new podcast in association with Treatwell, The Root of It, so plug in – the first series is out now. And on a final note, this will be my last issue as editor of Creative HEAD Ireland, a role that has introduced me to some of the most creative people I have ever met. Thank you for making my job such a pleasure over the years – have a very merry Christmas, and I wish you all the best for the New Year!

THE FIRST EVER Economic Value Report on the Irish hair and beauty sector has revealed that turnover for the sector was an estimated €2.6bn in 2019. The Hair and Beauty Industry Confederation (HABIC) commissioned economist and consultant Jim Power to deliver the detailed economic analysis of the industry, which also found that the total employment in the sector was equivalent to 2.1 per cent of the total Irish workforce. A total of 9,286 hair and beauty salons were counted in Ireland, of which 88.9 per cent of staff were female. In less positive findings, the Irish hairdressing industry’s black market was found to be worth as much as €400 million, with a cost to the exchequer of €55 million. In addition, the report stated that Covid-19 had represented a “massive shock” to the sector, and during the first 15-week shutdown €580 million in turnover was lost. The impact of the second governmentimposed lockdown has not been assessed yet, but the latest nationwide shutdown means salons face numerous challenges once again. With salons on track to re-open at the beginning of December, hopefully a Christmas rush will provide a period of normality for an industry that has undergone immense hardship this year.

FASHION WEEK S/S21
It was a very different experience to normal but London Fashion Week continued post-Covid with a mix of socially distanced presentations and virtual events. At Molly Goddard, Luke Hersheson for L’Oréal Professionnel channelled Kate Moss via ’90s grunge for a just-woken-up vibe, while at Roksanda, Adam Reed for L’Oréal Professionnel delivered Zoom call-relaxed glamour. At Mark Fast, Maria Kovacs for R+Co presented ‘the day after the night before’, with a modern mix of dual texture. At Erdem, Most Wanted Session Stylist Anthony Turner channelled Lady Emma Hamilton with a modern, unkempt feel for Dyson.

VAT drops to 9% for hairdressers
A REDUCTION IN the VAT rate for the hospitality and tourism sector, which includes hairdressers, has been announced in the Irish budget. Finance minister Paschal Donohoe TD announced the government would lower the tax rate from 13.5 per cent to 9 per cent, from 1 November 2020 until the end of 2021. Further support was also announced in the budget. The Restrictions Support Scheme will give financial aid to businesses that are closed due to Covid-19 lockdowns. The current Wage Subsidy Scheme was due to end on 31 March 2021, but the government has committed to running a similar scheme for the rest of 2021. Illness Benefit will now be available after three days out of work, rather than six, and self-employed workers can defer their 2019 tax balance and 2020 preliminary tax, interest-free for a year.

MWIT’LL BE WORTH THE WAIT
The Most Wanted and It List Grand Final will now take place Monday 29 March 2021, following the decision to postpone amid rising Covid-19 numbers and increased restrictions. While the announcement will be disheartening for many, particularly the patient 2020 finalists, the choice reflects the commitment to deliver a live event experience rather than a virtual ceremony. Alfol special projects director, Joanna Andersen, explained: “To see and feel an audience of more than 700 peers erupt into applause, to experience that unrivalled buzz; these are things you can’t replicate and we just don’t want to compromise on.” For more, visit creativeheadmag.com

#CHedit WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE A HAIRDRESSER? Initially I didn’t even think of hairdressing – I left school and went to do a PLC in nursing but I felt it wasn’t for me. I took up an apprenticeship in hairdressing not knowing a lot about it. Within a few months I knew it was where I wanted to be, a place of creativity and freedom. WHAT ARE YOUR HIGHLIGHTS SO FAR? Winning a place on the Irish Hairdressers Federation Star Team. Although I was fairly inexperienced at the time, the judges could see my potential. It was hard work but it all paid off when I was able to stand up on stage with a trophy. Also getting to the L’Oréal Colour Trophy STAR Award final as part of a duo was a huge achievement – and hopefully we’ll win!

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS? I hope I’m recognised globally for my work. I want people to know my name all over the world. I hope I’ve travelled and educated people on all things hair. I also see myself working with top brands and my name being a brand itself! My Instagram will have a blue tick and I’ll be able to make properly produced Instagram video, rather than just on my phone like I do now.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM HAIRDRESSING GIG? To demonstrate a look that I’ve created and have thousands of people there to see what I’ve created, to hear me speak. I want to travel a lot with work, so going to different countries and teaching people from all over the globe is a huge dream of mine that hopefully will become a reality.

Inside story IKON HAIR CORK
Ikon and its owner Valerie Finnegan Cahill are legends not just in Cork, but across Irish hairdressing. So, moving the salon to new premises on the city’s Marlboro Street – in fact the very unit where Val first began her career – was not a decision taken lightly. “We wanted to future proof Ikon,” Val explains. “We started looking for our ‘forever’ salon space and we found it!” The new space was created to impart a sense of luxury, and was created alongside interior designer Ber Pey of Studio No.6 Interiors. “Ber took the time to get to know us and our vision, then created a space that reflected both,” she says. Stand out pieces include the bespoke dividing wall, made by ironworker and friend Pat Keating, and the celestial wallpaper on the feature wall. The new look has gone down a storm with Ikon’s loyal clients. “It has a real feel of a New York loft, and the high ceilings, huge windows and double doors out onto our roof’s sky garden gives it a real sense of space,” explains Val. “We are blessed to have our outdoor area where people can take off their masks while socially distancing and relax while their colour is developing – they press that pause button while we take care of everything else.”

THE BUSINESS EDIT
HOW TO MAKE THIS CHRISTMAS COUNT CHRISTMAS IS GOING to look a little different this year; big parties are likely on pause, with less cross-country family gatherings this festive season. However, Christmas is usually a big money-maker for salons – so how can you give your clients a special experience when salons reopen, hopefully in early December? “We have decided we are going to make it the best Christmas yet!” says Martha Galvin, owner of Allure Hairdressing salons in Co. Mayo. “We have so many ideas to get all of our clients into the festive season. The most important part of our Christmas appointments is to create a safe, positive, happy place with an amazing atmosphere. We are nearly completely booked up already! In these uncertain times we don’t know if families will be together so we want our clients to feel amazing – even if it’s just going for dinner or a Zoom call they will feel fabulous.” With many salons running at a lower capacity to enact social distancing, it’s important that clients know that they need to book in early to guarantee an appointment. “We have been concentrating on making sure all team members are rebooking their clients for December to avoid disappointment,” says Sean Taaffe, owner of Sean Taaffe Hair & Beauty salons in Co. Kerry. “Most clients are very receptive to it as they know the reasons why we have to space slots out for their safety. We also use the CountMe app, which records the client’s journey through the salon – so no matter how busy it gets it helps keep clients and team members safe.” Creating a festive atmosphere will help guests get into the Christmas spirit despite social distancing measures. “The atmosphere is determined by the team and we will endeavour to make it as Christmas-sy as any other year!” adds Sean. “The music will turn festive and the team love the buzz so I’m sure we will make it the very best it can be.” Anthony Kilcoyne, owner of Salon 2 in Co. Sligo, is planning every aspect of Christmas down to the smallest detail.
12
012_BusEdit template.indd 1
“We want to create a homely feel around the salon and we are in the process of creating our own brand of beautifully scented candles and diffusers to help ease the feel of the strict Covid-19 measures we have in place,” he says. “We are currently giving guests bottled water but this may change and we will also be giving out individually wrapped, custom chocolates with our logo on.” “Each year we decorate our salons with a winter wonderland theme and all the team gets involved by wearing festive clothes,” says Martha. “We also give a complimentary blow-dry to our regular clients, which creates a lovely atmosphere in the salon, showing our gratitude and thanks for all the support our clients have given us throughout this year.” Competitions can also help clients feel appreciated, Anthony explains: “This year we are planning on running one big giveaway along with doing the 12 Days of Christmas, where one lucky guest will win some hair products each day. We love the engagement from guests when we run competitions.” After such an unusual year, your clients will appreciate a little luxury over the festive season. “I’m not sure how the Christmas party season – or lack of – will go this year so we will be encouraging clients to treat themselves or a loved one to a little indulgence such as a blow-dry bundle or a 12-week blow-dry,” says Sean. “We also have a barber shop attached to our Killarney branch so we will be marketing across both clienteles.” And make sure you stock up your shelves so your clients can treat themselves and their loved ones with some fantastic products. “As we are an ALFAPARF Milano and JOICO salon, we have their luxury Christmas gift sets in the salon already,” adds Martha. “We will be promoting our products and gift sets on our social media by sharing pictures and videos of our great products and how to use them. Our staff are also very active on social media and we share and post each other’s imagery to reach as many people as possible.”
LIFE LESSONS
DANIELLE GARNER WILDFLOWER
Team synergy. I worked on my own when creating Wildflower for the first six months, and a lonely six months it was. Now we have a team of 15 beautiful souls who all balance and support each other. You don’t have to do anything in life that you don’t want to. Change it! Create the reality you want to live in – this goes for all aspects of business. Provide the best service, and the rest will follow. I don’t care who you are, what qualification you have achieved or how many Instagram followers you have, if your client in the chair isn’t happy with your service, you haven’t fulfilled the job. Live a good life. Create a worklife balance for all staff, not just yourself. We all deserve to live our best version of life, so why do we wait until we have ‘achieved something’ before we allow ourselves the joy? Appreciate those who support and work in your business. It goes a long way. Take them on days out, write them a card of acknowledgement. Recognition of gratitude is wonderful.

THE BIG IDEA
‘BUSINESS AS USUAL is not an option’. So begins the introduction to Salon Re:Source, a sustainable salon toolkit created by Anne Veck and Keith Mellen (pictured above), the duo at the helm of the award-winning Anne Veck salon in Oxford. They believe fervently that the hairdressing industry has the power to make a real difference. “Salons use huge amounts of energy, water, plastic and chemicals, and produce large amounts of waste,” they explain. At the salon, the team has been working hard for some time to reduce energy usage, lowering the salon’s and their clients’ carbon footprints, reducing waste through more efficient systems and using ethical and sustainable products and packaging where possible. It has been a concerted effort, and now the pair wants to share what they’ve learnt with salons to encourage them to do the same. A study by Southampton University Business School showed that if a small, four-seater salon adopted its eco hair and beauty suggestions it would save 24,150kWh of energy, 286,000 litres of water and more than £5,300 (€5,855) a year in cost savings. At Anne Veck Oxford, the team has cut its carbon emissions and energy costs in half, saving £3,000 (€3,310) every year since 2012. That’s £24,000 (€26,525)! The toolkit is broken down into three sections: easy, low-cost, quick wins; steps that require a little more effort and cost; and major changes that require bigger investments. For immediate, maximum, positive, world-changing action, there’s a trio of top tips: change from cotton to biodegradable towels and gowns; switch to a green energy provider; and move to sustainable and ethical product suppliers. You can access the toolkit at bit.ly/SalonReSourceUK and start going a little greener.

# W E L L AT V A
A VISION OF
VICTORY
2020 COULDN’T STOP THE ICONIC WELLA PROFESSIONALS TRENDVISION AWARD COMPETITION – ITS EVOLUTION JUST MADE IT EVEN MORE ACCESSIBLE AND MORE EXCITING. NOW MEET THE NAMES WHO STEPPED UP TO THE CHALLENGE AND WON! THERE MIGHT NOT be the legendary celebration at London’s Roundhouse this year, but despite the challenges of 2020, Wella Professionals has gone above and beyond to ensure its iconic competition continued, giving talents across the UK and Ireland the opportunity to showcase just what they can do when given that creative outlet. It was the most accessible TrendVision Award as, for the first time, the competition had a digital format. The result? More than 1,000 photographic entries on Instagram! Next, for the Digital UK Regional & Ireland Heats, 840 competitors had to record a video sharing details about their photographic entry, with 66 making it through to the Final. Now things got serious! Following a digital briefing by Wella Guest Artist judges, competitors were required to create a final new look on a head block or on a model. It was then over to a veritable Who’s Who of more than 40 prestigious judges, each chosen for their hairdressing expertise – think Zoë Irwin, Jayson Gray, Robert Eaton, Warren Boodaghian, Andrew Dunne, Luke Benson, Leonardo Rizzo, Dom Capel and Kerry Hayden. Phew! And these finalists were never alone; Wella was there every step of the way with digital mentoring that included video briefs,
16

Zoom mentoring sessions and top tips from judges. And the prizes? Exceptional! Yes, winners receive Wella Education packages and trophies, of course. But that’s not all… Gold winners will also enjoy a photoshoot experience to recreate their winning look, as well as a two-day shoot with leading industry photographer Kai Wan, mentored by Wella Guest Artist Darren Ambrose. Together, they will create the TrendVision Award 2020 Winners’ Collection, which will be featured in trade press. And there’s even more – Gold winners are in with the chance to secure a place at the incredible Wella Destination global event, while also receiving digital mentoring in 2021. It’s career rocket fuel! “This is our way of giving back to the industry,” says Allison Hargreaves, national education operations and events manager UK & Ireland for Coty Professional Beauty, “and we are delighted to be offering such incredible inspiring prizes that will genuinely help further careers. I’m certain we have discovered some new stars in the making.” Now, 27 winners from six categories in the UK and Ireland have been crowned, all announced via Wella’s Instagram @wellahairuki. Victory is theirs! Want to know the 18 names who’ve got the vision? Of course you do!

THE COLOUR CLINIC IS OPEN…
THE WIDER INDUSTRY. SUZANNE ALPHONSE EVERY MONTH A WELLA PROFESSIONALS COLOUR EXPERT EXAMINES AN ISSUE WHICH AFFECTS THEIR TIME IN YOUR CHAIR SPEAKS OUT ABOUT HOW YOU CAN PROVE TO YOUR CLIENTS THAT YOUR EXPERTISE IS WORTH “A big challenge I have as a colourist is getting the artistry of what I do across to the client – I’m really up against home hair colour, there’s great technology now and it’s so convenient. Offering something simple like an all-over regrowth colour really puts us in a tricky position. Does the client value that service enough to take hours out of their day and spend €100? A service like Luxelights is perfect. It can offer that coverage of greys or blending, depending on their needs, to create that youthful element to their colour. Before, clients liked to see lots of highs and lows, lots of contrast, but that really youthful look comes from seamless, professional blends. The new Koleston Perfect ME+ Pure Naturals shades give such a fantastic, natural colour result – enough for people to notice that someone looks great, that something’s changed, rather than ‘wow, you’ve had your hair coloured’. My clientele has had a massive shift towards natural-looking colour – I think everyone’s a little afraid of if we go into another lockdown, what that grow out will look like. “With Luxelights I can manage that regrowth and, with an extra 10 minutes, I can place some foils to develop seamlessly, gloss at the end, and give clients something different that they just can’t get from a box colour. The colour is personalised, so it’s also harder for them to go to another salon or colourist and helps to cement their relationship with me. I can offer them something different every time they come in without them having to spend that extra time, but they still see the artistry of what I’m doing.”

SHELFIE TIME The launch of the new Color Fresh Mask is so exciting! With 11 products across two ranges, Color Fresh Masks are so much more than a conditioning mask. There’s no need for a skin allergy test, they can be applied on the day in-salon, and also used to maintain professional colour between colouring services. The seven natural shades give a visible colour refresh and enhanced shine, while the four vibrant shades offer a visible colour transformation that will fade true to tone. It’s a great way for blondes to experiment for the weekend or a special event, or for colourshy clients who want to try a colour before committing. The incredible conditioning formula leaves hair feeling smoother and looking healthy. My clients and I love them!”

WITH SO MUCH incredible technology out there, it’s astounding how many brands have stuck to old-fashioned permanent colour formulas, utilising nearly identical molecules and active ingredients (such as PPD and PTD) as those devised in the 1800s. Sure, there were tweaks over the decades, but clients continue to develop potentially serious allergies to PPD and PTD – both known sensitisers. Wella Professionals Koleston Perfect ME+ took more than seven years to develop but it was worth the wait, emerging as one of the biggest game-changers in hair colour. The patented scientific breakthrough was the result of more than 3,000 test formulations, and opened colourists’ eyes. It removes the

Lockdowns are tough on your business, but let’s not forget that they’re also tough on your staff. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, your team members are likely to be worried about their income, their jobs and their health. However, it’s possible to step up as a boss and a mentor, provide the support they need and also seize the opportunity to reinvent what their working week looks like – so they can go back to the salon feeling happy and healthy. Someone who knows a thing or two about staffing is Danielle Kennedy, owner of The Collective by Lloyds in Waterford and new president of the Irish Hairdressers Federation. Having achieved Legend status by winning the Best Salon Team at the Most Wanted Awards for three years in a row, The Collective by Lloyds is constantly evolving to better its team and service. “We’ve taken advantage of the current situation to try something new with our opening hours, to offer our team members a better work-life balance,” explains Danielle. “After the first lockdown we moved our late night opening to a Monday and Tuesday and now close at 5pm on Thursdays and Fridays, and at 3pm on Saturdays. Also, because Saturdays are such a short day now it’s not necessary to have all of our team working, so they alternate having Saturdays off.” She hopes that once they are back in the salon, these measures will allow her staff to be happy both in and out of work, and underlines the importance of providing support and a healthy dose of communication. “The past few months have been a difficult time for salon owners and team members – there is so much stress and anxiety in the world outside of work that it can easily carry into the workplace,” Danielle says. “Team members realise what a difficult time it is for salon owners and can feel like they don’t want to bother their employers with minor issues. But engagement is the key here, and you need to keep communication flowing with your team so those little things don’t build up.” Danielle hopes that this kind of approach will not only strengthen teams, but also help the entire hairdressing industry as a whole: “We lose so many people in this industry because people get burned out by working late nights and weekends, and those working commitments clash with commitments such as kids and family. I think it’s an area that we could make a real difference to our team’s lives and create a better balance.”
Marc Ballance Ballance Hair & Beauty, Dublin
“After we reopened the salon at the end of June, we have had to split the team into two different working pods. This was to ensure there were less people working on the floor at one time and limit interactions between our team and clients alike. Our team is like one big family, so making changes to the way we have operated for 19 years was a huge challenge in itself! But they are open to change and just want to work, which makes every challenging situation a lot easier. “We have WhatsApp group chats to stay in contact with other staff members who we may not see because of our twoteams system. We have also divided the teams fairly so that they both operate with the same number of stylists, receptionists and assistants. Communication is key to understanding your team’s happiness. “We are constantly talking to our staff and ensuring that they are comfortable. If our staff are working long hours we are making sure that they will get the following day off to rest up and enjoy their downtime too, which is vitally important. The face coverings definitely are not ideal but if it will help protect our staff and clients alike, we are happy to do it!”

Zalon Colour Remover
Wella Professionals Color Fresh Masks
It’s been a while since that summer flurry – so make sure your colour clients don’t get to Christmas post-lockdown without a trip to you. Create a journey, a step-by-step process that books them back in with you. And think about how else you can make money through colour. If you’re looking to start afresh, Zalon Colour Remover is a brilliant upsell. Its low cost (about €10.85 excluding VAT, per application) can net you a cool €45 easily for the service. It takes about 30 minutes, during which you can get on with mixing your colour and doing your prep work. Wella Professionals’ new Color Fresh Masks are a quick and effective in-salon colour option that can also be used between appointments to deposit colour and maintain hair health simultaneously. Talk up the conditioning side of colour; too many clients still think that colour is flat-out bad for their hair. L’Oréal Professionnel is introducing three new speedy services to its salons designed as interim balayage solutions, while keeping clients engaged in the colour journey. Halo Highlights offers a pop of brightness, Gloss and Go gives neat neutralisation in a flash, while Boost Your Balayage helps to refresh the colour in half the time.
“Doing a bigger appointment once or twice a year and offering quicker services in-between stops clients dabbling in home colour, even if they can’t get to the salon. We offer a ‘base and face frame’ which is ideal for the brunette client who wants to add some sparkle with some lightness while their base is developing. “Our express blonde service is great for the blonde client who is time-conscious – the face frame area is lightened with some strategically placed foils, then glossed for a polished look. And the basin balayage and gloss is great for a refresh in-between the bigger jobs. We also create a client journey and always plan their next visit. “For example we might discuss adding more dimension through the back, and brightness at the front for next time. “When it comes to retail, I think it’s really important to advise clients and avoid the hard sell. I always explain the difference between professional products and supermarket ones, and talk about how professional products are more concentrated and with better ingredients so they last longer. Why spend €200 or more on your hair and then wash the colour down the sink? One tip I was told as a trainee was “If a piece of clothing was ‘dry clean only’ would you throw it in the washing machine?”. The answer was of course no!”

“Recommending re-booking is so important, especially for Christmas – many of our clients have their next two appointments booked. Always talk to clients about what changes you might suggest trying next time. Phorest Salon Software is a great tool for marketing your clients. We have kept clients informed along the way with the email marketing and they know exactly what to expect before they arrive at the salon. “We haven’t recently raised our prices as we felt it was the wrong time to do this, but we did add a PPE charge of €10 per appointment which we have now dropped to €5. We use treat cards which are a great way of introducing clients to new services and pampering with treatments – I think it is better to add value than to discount. We only do this on full colour services on certain days with new stylists who need to build their clientele. “I would also recommend talking to your suppliers about better prices and talking to your landlord about a reduction in rent or a freeze on rent owed during lockdown.”
Robert Chambers
Hairdressing might be your passion, but it’s also your livelihood – and like it or not, the money that it brings in matters. It’s been a tough year for finances, from the instability from forced closures to the unique stresses that come with navigating government aid. Now that we’re coming to the end of the year, things are once again looking a little different – you likely had a busy few months this summer, but have been closed again. So, how can you keep your cashflow healthy, your clients happy and your books balanced? “We have had a very positive few months and although there is uncertainty again, planning your business is so important,” says Sarah Mason, owner of Sarah Mason Professional, Galway. “Rebooking your clients is a must and getting their haircare regime in place is paramount in your business, not forgetting about the smaller services as fillers for your day to maximise your potential.” Despite the second lockdown, the government’s recent budget announcement will hopefully ease some worries. The government confirmed a reduction in the VAT rate for the hairdressing industry from 13.5 per cent to 9 per cent until the end of 2021. Businesses closed or severely impacted by restrictions can apply for financial aid through the Restrictions Support Scheme. The current Wage Subsidy Scheme is due to expire on 31 March 2021, but the government has committed to running a similar scheme for the rest of the year, in an effort to protect jobs. And for sole traders, your 2019 tax balance and 2020 preliminary tax can be deferred for a year without interest, to provide some cashflow for your business. Sarah suggests creating a second account for savings to help you keep on top of your finances. “It is also vital that you manage your stock levels as stock wastage can cost a business a lot of money,” she explains. Increasing your prices can be a way of upping cashflow while also helping clients recognise your value. “We increased our prices on our reopening purely because of extra costs, but we have extended the amount of time that we spend with each client,” says Sarah. “This has been incredibly positive because they really appreciate that you have given them more.” And you can make your clients feel special without discounts. “We give our clients little treats such as samples when they have had a high spend, rather than building numbers up on loyalty cards, which we find works for us as a team,” she adds. Checking that you’re getting the best deal possible on your products is another way to save. Wholesalers can not only provide excellent prices on your favourites, but also big ranges under one roof and expert advice to boot. Hennessy Hair & Beauty has been providing the industry with top-notch products for more than 35 years. With exclusive ranges and all-time favourites available in the Doughcloyne and Cork city centre stores, you can be sure that you’re investing in the best products for your salon and saving time and cash at the same time.

The more you can offer in your salon, the more money you’ll bring in. Additional services such as extensions, beauty treatments and events can not only boost your intake, but also increase client loyalty and help them think of you as a one-stop shop for all their needs. Get ready to give them more than ever before! “Salons should consider adding more services to their menu in 2021 to boost interest – even with a regular client you’ve had for years you should never presume they are just going for the same,” explains Great Lengths stylist Edwina Hayes and owner of Street Life Hair, Kilkenny. “If you don’t keep up with new advances your clientele will eventually filter away.” Hair extensions have shaken off their reputation as a vehicle solely for long, voluptuous hair, and modern offerings are now perfect for troubleshooting common hair problems – so if you don’t offer them yet, you need to start! “Great Lengths extensions are particularly great for business, as there’s a respect for the ethicality of the hair and the brand history,” explains Edwina. “It’s about creating extra length and volume and Great Lengths never fails. The colour match is never a problem with more than 80 colours available to choose from. When we first came out of lockdown, people felt they deserved the best and wanted to go for the top quality brands in products and extensions.” Extensions open up opportunities for upselling, bringing a nice injection of cash to your business. “New extensions clients who visit your salon are also a possible new colour and style client for the taking,” says Edwina. “I offer our extensions clients a discounted weekly blow-dry if they book a running appointment – this maintenance also helps the longevity of their extensions.” Adding beauty offerings to your salon can help bring people in and
36
Tool Kit.indd 6
bump up their bills, too. You can make your salon a destination for not just hair but eyebrows, nails, make-up and treatments. “Salons should definitely add beauty and aesthetics to their menus, as they complement each other amazingly,” say Debbie and Tracie Ennis, owners of Blondies Hair & Beauty in Rosslare, Co. Wexford. “The best services to introduce initially would be a nail bar, brow bar and make-up. As the years have progressed we’ve moved on to offer semi-permanent brows, non-invasive aesthetic procedures and cosmeceutical facials.” Teamwork and excellent timekeeping mean that it’s possible to upsell a client to add a beauty treatment when they’re in the salon for a hair service. “When a client walks through our door they are a client of the whole salon, not just of one person,” explain Debbie and Tracie. “We’ve had clients just come for hair and now they come to get their hair, brows and nails done. If a client books an upstyle appointment we’ll ask them if they would also like their make-up done. If a colour client has a half-hour development time, we ask them if they would like their nails done or their brows threaded. The client is usually thrilled they can get it all in one place!” If you’ve got a bit of extra space, make use of it by holding events that promote your salon while making some extra cash. It’s an excellent way to give back to your clients, and allowing them to bring a plus one can bring new people into the salon. Once they know what you’re all about, they are more likely to come back as a paying customer. Renting out space for shoots and events can also bring in money in the form of day rates, with minimal effort from you. Additionally you never know who you might meet – use the opportunity to network and make some contacts for the future.

“Our events cover every angle of hairdressing that I think will help freelancers grow. For example we had Tony Heffernan, the Tattooed Accountant, in to do a training day on finances and accounting specifically geared towards freelancers. Ky Wilson did a session and a talk on going out on your own, too. We’ve had social media experts, yoga, spiritual classes and then at least once if not twice a year, we try to host a Freelancer’s Night where anyone in the hair and beauty industry who works out on their own can come in and mingle, have fun and connect with each other. “A good event is one that solves a problem for people, helps them get over a stumbling block or teaches them something that helps them move forward. It helps that freelancers who attend our events are doing it on their own time – they are investing in themselves so they are eager to learn and participate. There is always great engagement and banter at a Maven event. We had some amazing classes lined up for 2020 before Covid-19 hit – Lorraine Dublin, Christina Cook and Lena Bogucharskaya – so as soon as it’s safe to get dates set for these legends we will do so. “I also encourage the members at Maven to take the space and run their own courses, I love seeing them push themselves. They turned the light on me and got me to do my own course, so I’ll be hosting one for anyone who is going, or who is thinking about going, out on their own. The course will cover everything that you need to do before you start and then how to become successful when you do so. We’ll be talking, start-up, finances, branding and social media.”

RETAIL THAT ROCKETS Bankz Hair and Beauty
WITH TWO LOCKDOWNS AND AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE, SALONS ARE LURCHING BETWEEN FLOURISHING AND ZERO INCOME. HOWEVER, SOME SMART SALONS SET UP THEIR OWN ONLINE SHOPS, PROVIDING A LINE OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN HAIRDRESSERS AND THEIR CLIENTS, WHILE ALSO ENCOURAGING THEM TO TREAT THEMSELVES AND SPEND SOME MONEY. FIND OUT HOW THESE TWO SALONS DID IT AND WHY THEY’VE NEVER LOOKED BACK…

“I set up my online shop in April. It was a new concept for me as my company is generally a very face-to-face business. However, I had to adapt to change and offer a solution to my clients. I watched webinars to educate myself on online business as I needed to ensure my clients would be offered an easy-to-use shopping solution. “I partnered with John Donnelly from Digital Salon Group and in order to set up retail I had to ensure all my key products were available in suitable quantities for my shoppers. With the help of the government’s Enterprise Voucher this larger than normal product ordering was made possible. As I am a sole trader I was not entitled to be on the pandemic payment, so for me to make an income I really had to make this new online expansion work! “I sell everything from hair to beauty products. I ensure my bestsellers are reviewed regularly and kept well-stocked to meet customer demands. The main brands I stock are JOICO, ALFAPARF Milano, ghd and Hot Tools. The online shop has helped my business through lockdown, as product revenue increased by 89 per cent between April and July. I would highly recommend salons set up online shops.”
Aviary Beauty & Hair
“My goal for 2020 was to launch our online store, as I felt this was just how people shop now for groceries, clothes, skincare and haircare. Although the latter is a far more bespoke category as you want hair and beauty products to be carefully and professionally selected for you. Not by a faceless company but from a salon that knows you and your hair concerns. “I worked with Digital Salon last year and it helped me create a new website, one that was mobile-friendly, as this is how the vast majority of us view our screens now. My plan was to launch in May, but in mid-March we had to get it set up straight away. I can honestly say without our online store my business would not have survived being forced to close for so long. It saved any redundancies or reduced work hours from the team, which was my biggest concern. “I believe it’s impossible to do business now without an online presence. People like to have control, browsing our product offerings and reading about them in their own time – the majority of our sales come between 8pm and 10pm.”

Marketing your salon via social media is no longer a choice – it’s a necessity. Your account is a virtual shop front, telling everyone who searches for your salon what your work, interiors and even team members are like. However, the online world is a fast-paced one, and an active Facebook page and sprinkling of pictures on Instagram is not enough. With Reels and Tiktok now integral parts of the digital landscape, how can you make sure you’re maximising your potential and getting your salon known? “Now more than ever, social media is a big part of our lives with people interacting through this platform on a daily basis,” explains Jodie Quinn, art team member at House of Colour, Dublin. “It’s a platform to get your name out there, express your talent and individuality and build a strong clientele.” She continues: “You have to identify your target market and how you want to be seen – whether that’s through pictures, short videos or tutorials. I like to do both hairdressing and personal content as I’ve found as much as people like to see your work, they also like to know the person behind the page. Being yourself is best.” Tiktok and Reels are perfect for hairdressers, says Jodie. “They are such easy platforms to use to showcase your work – a ‘before and after’ photo or a quick little ‘before and after’ video and you’re ready to post,” she says. “The simplest videos are usually the best – something as simple as mixing your colour makes a great video!” And you don’t need a large investment of time or money to get the most out of social media. “One minute before you begin with your guest and one minute after you’re finished opens a huge platform to express yourself,” she adds. “You don’t need to put a lot of effort in or buy a fancy camera – some natural light and a
good finish and you’re ready to showcase your work to the world!” Online consultations are another way to harness the power of the internet – by bringing your expertise into peoples’ homes. They spiked in popularity during the first lockdown, but many salons are now seeing them as a way to provide flexible advice, improve accessibility and stay in touch with clients. “Lockdown prompted us to reach out to our clients,” says Sarah Clancy, senior stylist at Ravens Hair Salon in Limerick. “During this time, a lot of people felt isolated. We needed to reassure our clients and friends that we were working hard behind the scenes, gathering information through virtual consultations and that we would be ready to hit the ground running upon reopening.” Louise McGrath, owner of L’Avenue in Ashbourne, Co. Meath, also decided to start offering virtual consultations to manage their re-opening process. The Ravens team and the L’Avenue team both used forms from Digital Salon Group for their consultations. “They were accessible on all of our social media sites through online links on Instagram and Facebook during lockdown – clients simply followed the links, filled out the form and submitted it,” says Sarah. You can really get to know your client’s hair with digital consultations, especially as they may have had an attempt at cutting or colouring themselves while stuck at home. Questions on the L’Avenue form include: ‘When did you last cut and colour your hair?’ ‘If you did it at home, what did you use?’ ‘What are you hoping to achieve from your salon appointment?’ ‘What products are you using?’. Louise explains: “We felt these questions allowed us to determine how clients’ hair would behave and also allowed us to see the length of regrowth, any build-up on the colour and so on.”

Piece of the action Salon owner, fashion fanatic and editorial ace, Richard Phillipart has so many strings to his bow it’s little wonder he’s enjoyed the success he has. With the help of his core Fashion Week squad – featuring Matthew Sutcliffe, Jordanna Cobella, Lauren Bell, Bailey Humphreys and Jennifer Linton – the regular lead for teams supported by L’Oréal Professionnel and BaByliss PRO built a backstage vibe at Salon Smart Live to recreate three of his favourite creations from his back catalogue… PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDY LANE
Richard Malone S/S20
STRAIGHT FROM the S/S20 runway, this perfect plait for Richard Malone was inspired by the collection’s beautiful, intricate accessories. Sinuous metallic additions were stitched to the end of the sleek braids, to enhance the stylistic effect. “It’s the precision and thought behind the look that gives it that high-end edge. There are no lumps, bumps or movement,” Richard explained. Hair was prepped and blow-dried with L’Oréal Professionnel TECNI.ART Liss Control and Pli for the perfect texture. 6Fix was sprayed continuously during the styling to keep things smooth, before using a combination of netting, hairspray and diffusers to flatten and smooth through the crown of the head. “It’s about taking classic techniques and rethinking them,” Richard added. “I use this technique in the salon sometimes too when I’m doing a soft blow-dry. You can also spray hairspray on a big, dense synthetic make-up brush to hold specific strands in place.” The result was an exquisite, elevated take on a classic look. Not one hair was out of place, so all eyes were on the metallic elements as they caught the light down the runway. This look also made an appearance in Richard’s Snowdonia-set masterpiece Nomadic Winter, which featured exclusively in the January 2020 issue of Creative HEAD UK. How could we forget the alpaca co-star? 44

‘Please don’t touch my HAIR’ Vogue
PART OF RICHARD’S first independent Vogue shoot, this celebrates the versatility and beauty of textured hair. The dramatic shaping was courtesy of a sponge board and synthetic hair extensions to create the base. The model’s hair was then carefully brushed up to blend into the shape. “It’s sculptural, but it’s so easy to lose that shape,” Richard warned. “It took a lot of time to perfect the parting at the back.” The hair fanned out flawlessly, with precise lines blending seamlessly into the shape. “It’s details like this that elevate it above ‘hair up’, so that it looks super refined.” Richard tolerates absolutely no excuses when it comes to textured hair. “It’s important that people take the time to educate themselves to deal with all types of hair. It’s 2020, with all of the resources at our disposal there really is no excuse.” The Vogue piece also included a 32” dreadlock wig that took Richard three weeks to create; all of the looks were about enhancing natural texture, rather than defaulting to blow-drying or weaves.

Jack Irving
A/W18 at On|Off
A THROWBACK TO Jack Irving’s A/W18 On|Off presentation, this look was one of first assistant Lauren Bell’s all-time favourites as a part of Team Phillipart. Richard went through weeks of wig testing to get the perfect touch of retro styling and a plastic-look finish for the futuristic, alien-esque vibe of the clothes. “The references were B-movies from the ’50s,” Richard explained. “The idea was that these were aliens who had seen a picture of a human woman and tried to disguise themselves, but that they hadn’t realised that the hair wasn’t one solid piece.” Backstory and character have become real calling cards for Richard, and his deep-dive research has helped elevate him to the level of session star. Another example of classic techniques with a twist, the unusual plastic-y finish was a result of gel liberally painted onto the spun hair, created using plenty of hairspray and a diffuser. “Using gel alone makes it too heavy,” he explained, before showcasing how the tight double pleat was created using chopsticks. “You can fold the hair super tightly for that sculptural shape, much more so than fingers,” he added. “It’s important to be prepared for any eventuality!”
