Classic couture
WE SHOULDN’T REALLY say this, but sometimes we prefer the couture and resort shows to Fashion Week. For the Paris Haute Couture Fall shows, Neville Hair & Beauty in London was on hand to create the hair looks for the worldwide launch of Couturissimo, where the team had to create a look that would complement collections from three brands, resulting in a polished, luxurious style with some intricate plaiting. Over at Ziad Nakad, sophistication and sex appeal was the order of the day, with Stephen Low creating gloriously shiny waves that fell over the models’ left shoulders. While at Guo Pei, 32 individual looks were created to suit each model, with accessories taking pride of place.
Hairdryers, alongside scissors, are your BFFs and offer great retail opportunities, too. So you need to know about the Airshot from Cloud Nine: it creates less frizz, thanks to its anti-static technology and vitamin-infused design; it boasts three heat settings and a killer cool shot (RRP €115; cloudninehair.com)

I’m settling into my new position as a senior stylist, it’s a better cultural fit for me. My focus is on in-salon training on Mondays and client work the rest of the week. I also hope to go to London to do cut and colour training with Robert Kirby, focusing on trends. I’m also developing more of my retail skills in terms of products.

It’s been quite a year since our L’Oréal Colour Trophy Award win. We’re going to Lisbon to compete in the first ever L’Oréal International Grand Final so the whole team will be supporting us in the build-up to this. We have also announced new courses to our 2016 Academy autumn schedule, and have redesigned our website.

The Peter Mark Colour Trophy Awards are coming up in November, so we’ve started a bootcamp to get ideas together. We’re getting all the team members to bring their models into the salon, then to evaluate what works. The Generation NOW team, from left to right: Paolo Silveri, Supercuts; Kay Corbett, Medusa; Nikki Clifford, NJUK; Gemma Galley, Volt; Galina Johnson, Francesco Group; and Shauna Forman, House Of Colour
WELLA UNVEILS NEXT GENERATION OF STARS SIX UP-AND-COMING hairdressers have been chosen to create the new Generation NOW team for 2016. And one of six chosen from the UK and Ireland is Shauna Forman, from House of Colour in Dublin who passed the rigorous audition process with flying colours! The selection process began with all entrants submitting an example of their work and a written entry demonstrating their knowledge of fashion and beauty trends, their passion for hairdressing and why they want to be part of the Generation NOW team, before moving on to the audition stage. During the auditions, entrants were put through their paces in front of a panel of judges from Wella Professionals and industry experts. Candidates had to prepare a model and present them to the judges demonstrating why they would make a great Generation NOW team member. In the afternoon, session entrants were given a brief which they had to recreate in a workshop to demonstrate their hairdressing skills. Launched six years ago by Wella Professionals, the goal of Generation NOW is to discover rising stars who are hungry to make their mark in the world of hairdressing.
L’ORÉAL SPOTS HAIR TALENT L’ORÉAL PROFESSIONNEL has revealed four talented individuals who will take part in the L’Oréal Professionnel ID Artist programme 2016. Anna Muldowney of Hession Hairdressing in Dublin, and Lucinda O’Neill of Mizu in Dundalk, Co. Louth, are the new ID Artists and join the new Colour ID Artists Eryka Ann Reid of Toni&Guy Malahide in Dublin, and Conor Doyle of Peter Mark Dundrum in Dublin. Launched more than 14 years ago, the L’Oréal Professionnel ID Artists programme has helped to develop hundreds of individuals’ careers through education and mentoring from some of the leading names in the industry. As ID Artists, the quartet will be part of a two-year development and networking programme. This includes the opportunity to learn the latest cut, session and colour techniques from the best in the industry. Lucinda O’Neill said: “The audition was such a positive experience and the feedback I received was invaluable, I’m really excited to begin my journey for both the experience and education I will receive and to meet like-minded hairdressers.”

THE BUSINESS EDIT TRAINING TROUBLE? HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO GET APPRENTICES IN IRELAND? WHILE DUBLIN SALONS may get a steady stream of young apprentices, other salons around the country can struggle to attract enough young talent to guarantee the future health of their teams. Many Dublin salons are inundated with CVs and have waiting lists for when the need arises to start a 16-year-old in the salon. The same goes for cities like Cork, Galway and Limerick, with plenty of apprentices wanting to work there – salons frequently have a waiting list of CVs. But how are shops countrywide dealing with attracting talent and how are salons outside of the big cities overcoming the problem of a lack of supply of keen teens to work as apprentices? At H20 Creative Hair in New Ross, Co. Wexford, owner Niall Bennett says that they tend to accept post-Leaving Certificate graduates only. He explains: “This is to ensure candidates have maturity for our apprenticeship programme. We find that there are many applicants to our apprenticeship programme

WHEN DID YOU REALISE THAT YOU WANTED TO BE A HAIRDRESSER? When I was still at school I got a Saturday job at a salon called Foundation in Dublin. Then I left to go travelling and I wasn’t convinced that hairdressing was what I really wanted to do, so I went off to Australia and stayed there for
however, finding the correct individuals to fit into the H20 team can be a more challenging task. Apprentices must pick up new skills quickly and ensure that these are to a high standard. Having the stamina to work on your feet all day can also be a simple, but equally reasonable challenge for any newcomer.” And what about lower wages being a disincentive? “Among apprentices we find that often there is a well researched understanding for all that is required for the duration of the programme; this leads applicants to be more concerned with the time, money and energy invested in their individual skills, more so than wages,” says Niall. Valerie Finnegan Cahill, owner of Most Wanted Supreme Team winner Ikon Hair Design in Cork city, says there’s a steady supply of teenagers seeking apprenticeships and eager to become stylists due to the creative and fashion elements within the hairdressing industry. “We find the length of time their training takes and their wages are never an issue when hiring as its their enthusiasm and passion for their careers is the priority,” she says. Once you’ve got them, what comes next? “Keeping apprentices focused and motivated,” explains Valerie, adding that apprentices are a key part of every salon ensuring new talent comes into the business every year and guaranteeing the future health of its creative team. Bridget Haren, owner of Altamoda in Ennis, Co. Clare, says the biggest challenge facing all salons is getting the right person to fit into your team, and ensuring they understand your salon’s ethos and how you deliver your service. “Our wage system works really well for us, as when a trainee progresses to the next year they see the difference financially. Once they’re in our system we have a structured four-year training programme which allows us to make great progress,” she says. “Trainees are very important to our salon as they are the future and we grow and nurture young talent and train them the Altamoda way. We find by training our apprentices ‘our way’ we can keep them with us for longer as they build up a stronger clientele.”
two years. It was after that I realised hairdressing was what I really wanted to do. WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU’VE LEARNED ABOUT THE BUSINESS OF HAIR? It’s to give yourself time; don’t be so hard on yourself when you’re starting out. I thought in the beginning that I should be
able to do everything quickly and easily the first time I put my hand to it, but that wasn’t the case at all. Practice makes perfect. WHO IS YOUR HAIRDRESSING HERO OR STYLE INSPIRATION? I get a lot of inspiration from the people at Kazumi. The fact that they’ve been working
in hairdressing for so long and still have a passion for it amazes me. WHAT’S YOUR ULTIMATE AMBITION? I can’t really see myself stopping anywhere; there’s always so much to learn and so many boundaries to push through – the sky’s the limit really. I just want to keep progressing in my career.

LIFE LESSONS JENNI CRAWFORD, CREATIVE DIRECTOR, KAZUMI, DUBLIN 2 In all the years working in this amazing industry I’ve always enjoyed being part of a team, whether it’s part of a salon or collaboration with other stylists and working with fashion teams – models, make-up, fashion stylists or photographers. Sharing ideas with them has led me to great hair adventures.
I like to challenge myself and I like to be challenged. I like to compete in arenas of high standards – I’ve won the L’Oréal Colour Trophy three times. This keeps me on my toes creatively; I also like to experiment with photoshoots, I use my imagination to create stories in my head and then my challenge is to get it to print or into competition.
My passion for hairdressing is a never-ending story;

it’s one thing to want to be a great hairdresser and do great hair, but you have to understand who you’re doing it for – if you want to make your work reflect the best you can be, you have to be sure you share the experience with the client, model or team.
It’s all about how beautiful the hair can be. It’s the quality of the haircut without all the bells and whistles. Some hairdressers want to do styles that are on-trend – which is fine depending on your target market – but for some clients fashionable styles don’t suit, and clients’ needs are paramount. I like to inspire and encourage others, and the only way that happens is if I am inspired myself. I like to travel and I like arts, music and cooking. Working with creative people in these areas helps me to develop my ideas and stay creative. If I surround myself with creative people, the ideas keep flowing.
Be a mentor in the work environment every day. I encourage trainees to come and watch me when I am cutting hair and dealing with clients. It helps and encourages them as they’re moving along in their professional development. I bring them on shows and photoshoots with me, such as a charity shoot we recently did at Trinity College with Philip Treacy.

LAUNCH OF THE AUTUMN
IT WAS ONLY a matter of time before L’Oréal Professionnel, the French giant of salon shades, unveiled a bonding service to help protect all those colour clients in salons. And here it is – Smartbond does what it says on the tin. It’s the brand’s new “smart ingredient” that’s added to colour, and is designed to protect the bonds deep within the hair and strengthen them during colouring and lightening processes, resulting in hair that is stronger, feels touchably softer, and looks shinier. It’s all thanks to maleic acid, which limits oxidative stress, preserves strong bonds, captures the ions and allows the reconstruction of the weak bonds. There’s a blend of ceramides and polymers, too, that provides condition and shine. Then encourage clients to continue the good work with the home conditioner, which when used weekly for a few minutes, continuously strengthens the fibre week after week, making that salon finish last longer! Get smart...

Clients then take home packets of intense treatment, which when you peel, self-heat to 40˚C, penetrating the hair deeper. Clever!

Inside story DAVID MARSHALL FADE ST, DUBLIN 2
David Marshall opened his flagship salon on Fade Street in 1974 and has recently had a makeover. “I was really trying to make the salon look as close as possible to an art gallery; to give it that feel and to create that type of ambience and atmosphere,” explains owner and creative director David. “We sourced our Italian Vanessa chairs and Luxury backwashes from Salon Ambience, the mirrors were tailor made and the lighting we did ourselves too.” David added additional lights to create warmth, with bulbs that are as close to natural daylight as possible, There’s a new massage facility at the backwash to help clients relax while getting a treatment, and walls are adorned with art works from the likes of Graham Knuttel and Mary Tritschler, ensuring clients have something to admire while their colour processes!

THE STARS CERTAINLY shone at this year’s Most Wanted and The It List Grand Final – and with 10 Irish finalists shortlisted for the first time ever in new Irish categories, it was one heck of a party! Held at London’s historic Guildhall, the competition debuted the Supreme Team and Exceptional Stylist awards for the Republic of Ireland, important additions to this iconic awards event to honour and celebrate the incredible talents that Creative HEAD Ireland sees every day. After a sumptuous dinner, lashings of wine and the awards ceremony itself – where comedian Rob Beckett kept everyone in stitches – it was down to the crypts to party hard ’til the lights came up. THE BRIGHTEST HAIRDRESSING talents from across the country gathered at Dublin’s Convention Centre for one of the highlights of the industry calendar, the L’Oréal Colour Trophy final. Hairdressers from salons all over Ireland went head to head to compete for the sought after award, which also celebrated its 50th birthday. But there could only be one overall winner – and this year it was the Dylan Bradshaw Academy on Dublin’s South William Street. The award categories also included the L’Oréal Men’s Image Award, won by Brown Sugar Hair & Make Up in Blackrock, and the Star Award, which was awarded to Kate O’Neill of Peter Mark Dundrum. The judging panel featured high profile names in the international hairdressing industry, including Frederic Pavard of Alexandre de Paris, Jack Howard of Paul Edmonds London, Steve Rowbottom of Westrow, Alan Edwards of Alan Edwards, Adam Reed of Percy & Reed, and Tina Farey from Rush. Shows from leading Irish salon group Peter Mark, headed by Michel Doyle, and Zeba, led by Stephen Kelly, showcased spectacular hair presentations titled Balletto Musica Lirica and Ascendants respectively, featuring stunning and dynamic hair looks. The event was hosted by TV presenter Amanda Byram and was followed by a black tie dinner and aftershow party featuring DJ Vogue Williams and band The Strypes.

Now Mark has turned his sights to educating the next generation of hair and make-up artists. Every client wants beautiful, healthy-looking hair... and oils promise to deliver. From runway looks to celebrity ambassadors and expanding ranges, we chart the evolution of those slick drops of delight FROM THE AMAZON RAINFOREST to the souks of Morocco, oils have long been considered precious components of luxurious beauty regimes. For centuries women harnessed the nourishing benefits of nut, argan and coconut oils to add fragrance and strength to their hair. But it wasn’t until 2009 that oils found their place in the salon, with the launch of Moroccanoil Treatment, a rich elixir that answered every hair prayer. Stronger hair, incredible shine and amazing smoothness were suddenly available in one single product, and its distinctive brown and blue bottle became synonymous with beautiful hair. The ripple effect of this landmark launch is still being felt – in the seven years since, hairdressers and clients alike have developed a serious craving for oils, and it’s a go-to product backstage at fashion week shows across the globe. Indeed, Moroccanoil is now a staple at a number of big designer shows in all four fashion capitals. The reason for this? It’s a combination of oils’ universal appeal, alongside the rise in interest of products with a high-end feel. “Oils increase shine, smooth out the cuticles, help the hair to dry and leave a silky feel, no matter what length it is,” explains Paul Hession, owner of two salons in Dublin, where he uses L’Oréal Professionnel’s Mythic Oil and Elixir by Kérastase. Ross King, manager of Davey Davey in Dublin’s Stephen Street Lower: “We find them to be an incredible offering for
CREATIVE HEAD IRELAND
38-41_OilsIre.indd 2
clients wanting rich, luxurious hair. Oils really help to create great results, especially if your client has unruly hair. Oils are generally cosmetic but Moroccanoil and Elixir by Kérastase, which we use in-salon, contain moisturising elements which can help to speed up blow-drying time.” But as with all new and unfamiliar products, some clients are a little reticent about using oils. According to Davey Davey’s Ross King: “I think that clients have a perception that putting an oil in their hair will make their hair greasy, but the products have developed so much over the years that even if you have fine hair you can use them.” These worries can be overcome with the correct approach. It’s important to show clients that they don’t need to fear oils, and one way of putting their concerns to rest is by remaining mindful of the language you use when introducing the idea. “I assure clients oils are very nourishing products and are ‘dry oils’ with no silicon or parabens, they’re water soluble and most importantly, are not greasy or heavy so there’s nothing there that will weigh down the hair,” says Paul Hession. “Once clients hear about the benefits of using oils, their preconceived ideas are totally reversed. You can use these oils on your skin as well, so the perception now is definitely that oils are luxury products,” advises Paul. He believes that education is key. “The first thing I do with a client is say ‘let’s try it.’ And I put it on their hands first

and it dries instantly, that usually convinces clients quickly. It’s important not to overload the hair with oil, a drop or two is enough with medium-length hair – less is more when using these products.” According to Ross King, oils not only boost the hair quality but also cut down on styling time. “If clients are shown how to use oils properly, such as the right amount, they can see the benefits and the results they can expect to get but also it really does help cut down on blowdrying time as the oils make the hair more manageable.” He adds that clients respond very positively once they’ve tried it and seen the benefits with an uptake in retail sales as well. “Once shown how to use it and clients see how it looks after you’ve used it on their hair, I find they’re asking: ‘can I take one home with me?’ It almost sells itself when used properly,” adds Ross. And by introducing a client to oil, you can create a stepping stone to an entire oil-based collection – so there’s good reason to fill your shelves. As Paul Hession, owner of Hession Hairdressing, says: “Oils outsell all other styling products without fail, in both our salons we enjoy healthy sales – I’m a big fan of oils. And depending on usage, an oil may last a client for up to four months, if they use it in the correct quantities. “You can use oil on dry hair, wet hair, flyaway hair and I advise clients that during the day a little drop will smooth hair out – it’s a wonder product, on the floor and for retail,” adds Paul. So it’s not surprising that oils have had such a meteoric rise – all it took was a little brown bottle to kick start a revolution. It’s a little liquid gold for your salon’s retail.
