CREATIVE COLOUR ISN’T FOR EVERYONE. HOW CAN YOU TEMPT THE COLOUR CAUTIOUS? IT’S WHAT MOST colour clients come in seeking – an elevated or perfected version of themselves rather than a complete change-up. Natural-looking hair is a colour result often requested by salon clients. Whether they’re looking for grey coverage, tonal shifts or an ultra-shiny finish that makes hair look healthier than ever, clients often just want to look like themselves… but better. Women who have veered away from colouring their hair sometimes have done so because they wanted it to stay looking natural. There’s a clear desire for that je ne sais quoi, where hair looks beautifully shiny and natural while still delivering subtle colour. The latest innovation from L’Oréal Professionnel is here to shine a light on how to achieve this perfect mix of colour and a glossy, natural finish. Majirel GLOW is L’Oréal Professionnel’s first translucent, permanent hair colour, delivering a neutralised finish and extreme luminosity. Majirel GLOW is boosted in cool reflects to achieve the natural-looking results your clients are looking for, so now you have the perfect solution to keep your colour-shy clients happy. Don’t let fresh opportunity slip through your fingers. These shades can be used on all bases, perfect for everything from a colour refresh to those trying colour for the very first time. Majirel GLOW is the service to offer for those who want to enhance their natural colour and bring out their inner glow.

OFFER YOUR CLIENTS COLOUR TECHNOLOGY THAT IS BOOSTED IN COOL REFLECT... NEW MAJIREL GLOW FROM L’ORÉAL PROFESSIONNEL It might sound odd at first, but the idea of introducing translucent colour boosted in reflect to clients can open their eyes to other possibilities. Majirel GLOW is the perfect service for guests who are dipping a toe into the world of colour for the first time, or for those who maybe like their own hair colour but who want to try adding a little something-something. The innovative technology within the GLOW formula gives a real boost to hair reflects, with up to four-times more translucency and up to 50 per cent more light reflection.*

With GLOW you can offer up to three levels of lift for a change that’s noticeable but still suits your client. By not straying too far from their natural colour, you can reassure nervous clients. This low depth also means the colours are infinitely mixable, and highly customisable, depending on the base colour. Made with a specifically designed balanced range of dyes, the GLOW shades offer an on-trend cool, flattering finish. You can forget about awkward brassiness and warm tones throwing off your colour – these shades keep as cool as a cucumber.

Lock in your fresh, cool colour work with the updated L’Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Vitamino Color collection. Add a glossy seal to your work with the new L’Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Vitamino Color Acidic Sealer. The acidic lotion-to-milk seals the cuticle after you’ve rinsed out your colour, and provides that smooth surface for a serious shine boost. Clients can even take it home with them to use as a mask or intensive conditioner once a week. The result? Hair is six-times shinier right after application.** That should see a smile lighting up your client’s face!

48 JOIN US! Speak to any successful salon owner about the secret to their success and their individual answers might vary – but I bet that they’ll all cite the importance of education. With clients demanding more for their money than ever before, driven by the new techniques and buzzwords popping up on social media, you need to ensure your salon is at the forefront of the current trends. On page 38 we talk to salon owners and educators about how hairdressers are educating themselves today – what they’re learning, where they’re learning it and how online courses can help hairdressers short on time. Of course, there’s also plenty to learn at our first ever Salon Smart Dublin, where some of the very best in the industry will be taking to the stage and sharing their business ups and downs, along with dishing out some invaluable advice. Turn to page 24 where you’ll find the all-star line-up along with all the information you need for snapping up one of the last few tickets. Bring a notebook, pen and an open mind – I hope to see you there!

Big Hair Do goes off with a bang! ONE HUNDRED SALONS across Ireland and the UK came together for the Big Hair Do – in exclusive partnership with Schwarzkopf Professional for a second year. The party atmosphere was in full swing as salons opened their doors to welcome clients both old and new for an evening of incredible hair and much, much more. There were plenty of bubbles, Big Hair Do cupcakes and other sweet treats as guests got to know their local stylists. From curl classes to colour revamps and fringe trims, clients had the opportunity to get personalised hair advice and learn some tricks of the trade. As well as meeting new customers and reconnecting with clients, many salons also took the opportunity to collaborate with other local businesses to offer catering, drinks and beauty treatments. And once the fun was over for another year, guests left laden with Big Hair Do goody bags packed with products and incredible offers.

SHAKE IT UP…

THE WELLA TRENDVISION AWARD IRELAND HEAT AND #WELLACREATIVEREMIX IN DUBLIN WAS AN EVENT LIKE NO OTHER WITH LIVE STYLING, three catwalk shows and the chance to make hair history, hairdressers from all over the country gathered at the Intercontinental Hotel in Ballsbridge for an evening like no other. #WELLACREATIVEREMIX said goodbye to traditional hairdressing events, and hello to a dynamic, interactive experience. Scored by a live set from DJ Mona-Lxsa, guests were given the chance to watch top Wella artists work on their models before they took to the runway in three stunning presentations. The showcase gave them the chance to get up-close and personal with the techniques, take pictures and see the work that goes into creating a hair show. Akin Konizi and Jake Unger of HOB Academy presented ’80s inspired statement hair, followed by Stephen Aiken from Conroy Hair, who brought Parisian chic to the proceedings. The Wella Professionals Style Council, in collaboration with Bruce Masefield of Bruce Masefield Hair, looked to classic ’90s

Calvin Klein campaigns and created textured, wearable hair. Social media star and host James Kavanagh welcomed the Wella TrendVision models to the stage, who were then joined by the hairdressers behind the looks, and the audience was given the opportunity to ask questions before the winners were revealed. The 14 Irish winners from four categories will experience mentoring with some of Wella’s hair icons before they compete at the TrendVision Award UK & Ireland Final, held on 30 September at The Roundhouse in Camden, London. The winners of the two international categories: Color Artist of the Year and Creative Artist of the Year, will then go on to the International TrendVision Award Creative Retreat, taking place in Seville in 2020. Additionally, 10 gold winners of the Male Grooming and Runway from across the world will be chosen to join the Creative Retreat.

THE KNOT DR.

IT MAKES SENSE that a hair stylist and former owner of a line of salons would be behind a practical brush that would detangle like a dream yet keep hair healthy. But when caring for the long, tangled locks of his five daughters started to rule John Laverock’s mornings he decided something needed to be done. The tangles could not win. He sat down to fuse his stylist creativity with his curiosity, and in doing so designed a new type of detangling brush. It combines engineering principles with high-quality components to remove tangles and knots without breaking the hair or causing discomfort. “My goal was to create a brush that would save time while offering a gentle, pain-free detangling experience,” explains John. “And I also wanted to create a brush that my girls would love to use.” Every brush has the optimum number of bristles, all spaced just the right way to make detangling pain-free. The optimal diameter has even been assessed to ensure the correct strength and flexibility to eliminate discomfort and

CREATIVE HEAD IRELAND

014-015_StockOptions.indd 2

breakage. The ball tips on the bristles are larger and rounder, providing a massage-like stimulation to boost a healthier scalp. The brushes are super-strong to tackle the tangles, yet light and ergonomically designed to be easy on the wrists. Once his daughters’ detangling nightmares had been dealt with, John realised he had a tool that professional stylists – and their clients – would love, too. The Pro is a detangling specialist, and the line-up includes Sport and Swim editions, and mini and bright versions as well. The PhD is the go-to tool for salon stylists, featuring slightly thicker bristles to tackle thicker or chemically treated hair – particularly handy at the backwash. And there are accessories too – travel headcases protect brushes from getting crushed; the Flipcomb is designed to tease out difficult-to-tame tangles, while the Kleen is a premium cluster brush to keep your detangler fresh and clear from hair and dust. Oh, and the packaging is made with recyclable materials, too!

#CHedit WHY DID YOU WANT TO BECOME A HAIRDRESSER? My initial vision for my life did not include hairdressing, funnily enough. I had been dancing from the age of 10 and it had become my greatest love, I saw myself as a choreographer and perhaps one day the owner of a stage school. However, my mam would often make me come along to her hairdressing appointments and over time I started to enjoy going. Increasingly there was another great love brewing – hair!

KARL DAWSON SALON: THE SPACE AGE: 19

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR HIGHLIGHTS SO FAR? My first highlight is getting accepted onto the team at The Space. Before this I had been working in a small local salon and I built up the courage to go in to The Space and basically insist that they had to have me. Every single Spacer (that’s what we call ourselves) has taken time to guide me with love. As a result of all their input and my commitment to the craft I was able to achieve my second highlight, winning The L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy STAR Award 2019. I can’t even begin to explain the work that went into producing my look – literally blood, sweat and tears! To acquire such an accolade at such an early stage in my career makes me feel as if the sky is the limit.

18

016_Rising Star.indd 1

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS’ TIME? I definitely see myself as a salon owner and having a role in education. I believe it’s so important for our industry to share our hints, tricks and discoveries. I will definitely want to refine my skills so much that I will have the tools to educate on a global platform. WHAT IS YOUR DREAM HAIRDRESSING GIG? I must say my eyes still light up when I’m around dance – it will forever have a place in my soul – so what a gift it would be to combine my two great loves. I think if I got the opportunity to design, direct and choreograph a big, fashioninspired stage presentation I would be in my element, total dream gig!

Inside story NO.5 NATURAL ORGANIC MALAHIDE

Liz Murphy Howard had been renting the basement of a Georgian house when she was offered the opportunity to take over the whole building next door. She jumped at the chance, and No. 5 Natural Organic was born. “From the moment l walked in l knew exactly how l wanted it to look, and visualised creating a luxurious Art Deco space with a modern twist. I am a fan of the Stella Theatre in Rathmines in Dublin and it gave me great inspiration.” The very first purchase Liz made was four antique chandeliers, which set the tone of the salon and draws the eye upwards: “I felt the decision to paint the ceiling gold really shows off the detail in the original coving. I decided to source as much as I could locally.” Working with Ruth Barnett of Interior Living sped up the floor planning and fabric sourcing, which left Liz free to focus on the finer details of the salon. “The high ceilings create such an airy feeling. It’s a pleasure for visitors to spend time in and be pampered,” she says. “We cover all hair needs, including wig fitting, hair loss treatments and a full nail and brow bar service.”

Your behaviour changes attitudes around you. The more you engage positively with people, the more happy you become and the happier you are yourself. It creates a great atmosphere! Be curious and aware of everything around you. When you shop or are being served by someone, take notice of what you are seeing and feeling. Don’t let moments pass you by – there is inspiration everywhere! Emotion first, hair second. It is not just thinking: “What hair do I want to create?” But: “What emotion do I want to create?” We are a human-to-human business, you must never forget that. Have a raison d’être. It is not just what you do, it’s why you do it that counts. I invest in people not just for the business but because I love seeing people grow and become successful.

THE BUSINESS EDIT

NAVIGATING

NO-SHOWS YOU CAN BE the most prepared salon manager in the world, with every single day planned meticulously, but it only takes one client to make all your hard work obsolete. Whether they’re careless, indecisive or just plain forgetful, customers who fail to turn up for their appointments result in a loss of income and have a knock-on effect to your schedule and staff. So, what’s the best way to deal with these tricky situations? “No-shows are disruptive to the business as they can seriously affect your takings, especially for big colour bookings that would usually be marked out for two to four hours,” explains Susan Hackett, owner of Ravens Hair Salon in Limerick. “We are planning to put a cancellation policy that includes a deposit. On any colour bookings there will be a €50 deposit required.” According to Susan, these changes are necessary due to the pressure no-shows can exert on businesses. “We feel there is a need for a deposit policy as no-shows and late cancellation can be detrimental for a small business, to have a thriving business every client has an effect. Inform clients of your cancellation policy, including details of a deposit and your preferred cancellation timeframe. As of now we send a text message reminder 48 hours prior to the appointment.” Bozena Sarek, owner of Bozena Sarek Hairdressing in Navan, Co. Meath, agrees that getting in touch with clients before their appointment can be very helpful. “No-shows were once problematic in my salon,” she reveals. “Our most effective strategy is simply to send appointment reminders to customers – we send them two days before appointment, which gives them plenty of time to cancel and reschedule their appointment if they need to. It’s important to remember that the system is only as good

as the accuracy of the contact information you have for clients.” She has also implemented a deposit procedure that is proportional to the service booked. “We have a policy to deal with extreme cases – if the system shows that a client has three no-shows, than we inform them that in future we will charge 50 per cent when a service is booked – happily this has not happened so far,” she explains. “For long treatments, such as hair extensions or colour corrections, we change a deposit that is fully refundable up to 24 hours before the appointment. I know is hard to charge noshow clients, but it partly covers the cost of a hairdresser’s work – nobody wants to lose money. This means no-shows don’t happen very often in our salon anymore.” Research from Phorest Salon Software also shows that clients who were charged by their salon for a no-show were 13 per cent more likely to rebook in the future than those who weren’t charged. “By charging for their service, salons show they know their value,” says Shauna O’Halloran, marketing and content manager at Phorest. “It also clears the customer’s conscience – no need to slink away to a competitor for fear of being reprimanded next time!” But it’s important not to allow your clients walk all over you, and you need to know where to draw boundaries to avoid being taken advantage of. “When clients don’t show up for booked appointment they receive a message from us that we are sorry that they missed their appointment and we looking to hearing from to make another appointment at different time,” adds Bozena. “However, although it can be tough, if you have a client who is constantly missing appointments and not showing any improvement in behaviour and attitude, you might have to let them go.”

THE IMPACT OF THE HIKE…

…AND HOW SAVVY SALON OWNERS IN IRELAND ARE MAKING IT WORK

THE DAIL’S DECISION to increase VAT from 9 per cent to 13.5 per cent for businesses in the hospitality sector (which includes salons) drew criticism from those in the hairdressing industry. The VAT hike came into force in January, impacting hairdressers and salons up and down the country and, despite protests at Leinster House, the government has stuck by its decision. So, it’s been up to creative business owners to try to work out how survive the extra tax costs. We spoke to real salon owners about how they’ve adapted…

36

VAT template.indd 1

ANTHONY KILCOYNE SALON 2 SLIGO

“Salons run on tight margins and adding 4.5 per cent to the VAT rate has really had a negative impact on all of us. Money that would previously have been invested in education and growing the team is no longer there. We find that clients now question the cost of services more than they did before, which we understand, but thankfully we are still as busy as ever. Our loyalty scheme is a great incentive for a client to try out a new treatment or retail product for free, which usually results in a purchase next time. Clients feel valued and love getting a freebie – if you don’t have a loyalty scheme then put one in place! It is vital to have a strong social media presence, too, and we would suggest getting involved in the community to help give back and raise your salon’s profile. In Salon 2, the staff nominate two charities annually and we fundraise for them throughout the year. Offering a fantastic cut and colour is no longer enough – the service has to be a five-star standard. Also keep training and make sure you let your clients know all about what you have learnt.”

“I will be honest – we have been in business just three years and a VAT increase of this size has been a little scary. However I am monitoring things very closely. There was a prominent sting in the first VAT return, but I am happy to say business is good. I believe that having the correct pricing structure is essential to this success. Creating the perfect price list is not just based on how long a stylist has been qualified, it’s also about how a stylist has evolved and grown themselves through education and how much experience they can offer to the client. I have different price brackets for stylist, senior stylist, award-winning stylist and director, as it gives my client base choice. Watching stock levels has also been important and creates more revenue with your services. You can use a barcode system for all your stock control, to keep track of what has been used. Hairdressers all over the world are guilty of providing small services such as glossing or hair treatments without charging for them. In my eyes these are super for increasing your average docket, but not if you don’t charge for them! This creates a negative in your business as you are losing stock and revenue, which is more important than ever.”

chelsea kearney BLOWN AWAY CORK

“The VAT increase has been really hard on the hairdressing industry for a number of reasons. We already all have expensive overheads, and with the abolition of the trainee wage [and subsequent increase in wage costs for owners offering training positions] hitting businesses at the same time as the VAT hike, many salons have been put under extreme financial pressure recently. Like many salons, we have had to increase our prices to offset against these new costs – the best advice I can offer is that if you haven’t already put up your prices then do it now. Hairdressing businesses simply cannot afford to absorb the 4.5 per cent VAT increase and shouldn’t have to either – we work very hard to provide a great service to everyone who comes through our doors, and we shouldn’t have to reduce our profit margins just because the government wants to take more money out of our industry.”

HOW TOof vat-pro N YOUR SALO TONY HEFFERNAN, AKA THE TATTOOED ACCOUNTANT AND CO-OWNER OF LLOYDS HAIR IN WATERFORD, SHARES HIS EXPERT ADVICE…

1. Change your mindset. One of the most common things I hear is “my business would be fine if only for the big VAT bill”. VAT collected from your customers belongs to the Revenue – if you’re short of funds, it means other areas of your business are causing cashflow difficulties. Identify and improve these areas instead of complaining about your VAT bill. 2. Get a VAT bank account. Every salon should have one. Do a transfer each week from your main account to cover your VAT for that week. Some salons will transfer in the full amount of VAT on their takings, others will deduct an estimate for their purchases’ VAT. This avoids the pitfalls of my first point. 3. Understand your VAT return. As a salon owner you should have at least a basic understanding of how your VAT return is calculated. Your understanding should be to a level where you can request the workings from your accountant or bookkeeper and be able to identify if there is anything missing from your return – for example your supplier notice. 4. Ensure your supplier invoices are Revenue compliant. In order to reclaim VAT on a supplier invoice, it must be issued in accordance with the guidelines. Make sure you and your accountant are aware of these guidelines and are reviewing every invoice to ensure it is compliant. If not, get it amended from the supplier. 5. Understand EU purchasing. If you are a VAT registered business in Ireland, you do not have to pay VAT on purchases from other EU countries once you provide your VAT number to the supplier. I come across far too many salons that are paying 20 per cent UK VAT on the purchase. 6. Pay your VAT on time. When salons do not pay their VAT on time they leave themselves open to being charged interest by the Revenue. 7. ‘VAT audit’ your business once a year. Salon owners should allocate time at the beginning of each year to review all their VAT returns for the previous year, including back-up workings and paperwork. Be proactive.

How we learn now As the world becomes more competitive, it’s essential to keep your education up-to-date, enabling you to deliver the best services to discerning clients. Discover how you can brush up your skills

IN AN INDUSTRY that never stops moving forward, relevance is everything. New trends are constantly evolving, and so the importance of learning cannot be overstated – even if you’re talented, you need to keep up-to-date. “You can be skillful, but without constant and consistent education, these skills will deteriorate. The individual will not evolve, nor stay at the top of their game and will ultimately get left behind,” says Patricia Strachan, education manager for L’Oréal Professionnel Ireland. Thanks to social media, consumers are savvier than ever about the intricacies of specific looks and the techniques used to achieve them – so it’s important that your salon is able to deliver. “Clients are so educated these days, so we must keep up-to-date with all the latest technologies and products,” says John Maher, executive director at Queen salons in Dublin. “These new aspects of our industry demonstrate our willingness to provide the best. The power of education

CREATIVE HEAD IRELAND

Education Template.indd 2

to elevate our customers’ experience and differentiate us as stylists is paramount; it’s also fun and rewarding in terms of personal development. We include all of our team when it comes to education, work on in-house seminars and we partner with ALFAPARF Milano.” Fiona Gainfort, co-owner of Gainfort Academy, agrees that you need to stay one step ahead of your clients. “They expect their stylist to be able to offer these services straight away,” she explains. “So it’s really important to upskill.” Lorna Baker, ghd education manager in Ireland and the UK, believes education is the key to a successful hairdressing business: “Ongoing education is important for hairdressers at any stage of their career – hair is part of the fashion industry and, as with fashion, there’s always something new to know about,” she says. “Being on top of this means you stand out from the competition and can provide a point of difference in your salon, bringing in more clients and more money.”

39

15/08/2019 16:08

So what exactly should you be learning? For Claire Turner, Goldwell UK guest artist team member, your business depends on a good grasp of the very foundations of hairdressing. “Being a master of the ‘basics’ is so important. We can all apply colour or put a highlight in, but really being a master of them dramatically changes your work,” she explains. “Without mastering a global application, our roots stretches become uneven. Without mastering highlights, our contouring becomes stripy. It’s important for our clients to know we can do everything as they move through trends.” According to Patricia Strachan, investing in the latest colour education will not only ignite your creativity, but also prove lucrative. “The colour and lightening service is the biggest and profitable in salon,” she says. “Clients will stay loyal to their colourist much more so than to a stylist.” Fiona Gainfort agrees in the importance of being able to deliver. “Once you’ve mastered the basics you can improve and adapt by attending workshops,” she says. “Popular techniques include babylights and sombre, we are also seeing

40

Education Template.indd 3

smoky shades of pink, grey and blonde with cool undertones.” Having shaken off their reputation for being overly long or too obvious, extensions are also being requested by clients as a solution to common woes such as breakage and hair thinning, so it pays to train up a salon specialist. “We never stop learning, the hair and beauty market has evolved so much in a few years,” says Great Lengths educator Edwina Hayes. “More and more clients are asking about extensions – I even have clients with ultra-long, thick hair who still love having some to give their style more hold and durability. It’s fair to say most of the images we admire on social media or television are sporting some sort of hair extensions.” Sometimes it’s useful to get out of the salon and try something new in a different place – a new location can put you into the right headspace to give it your all and make the most of a course. Opened in 2018 by Xpert Professional, Accademia is a centre of training excellence in Dublin with stateof-the-art facilities for hair and beauty education, from brands including ALFAPARF Milano, JOICO, Kemon and Moroccanoil. Set across four floors, there are training rooms, fully fitted salons, lecture theatres, meeting spaces and even a garden and coffee shop to relax in and reflect on your lessons. Situated in Wexford and Waterford, the Gainfort Academies are the forward-thinking education hubs of the south, offering courses from brands such as Redken and ASP Affinage Salon Professional. For L’Oréal Professionnel courses, hairdressers can head to the brand’s Academy in Dublin. In Cork, Hennessy Hair and Beauty runs courses that will brush up your skills, or even open up a whole new skillset – and source of revenue – for you and your salon. Of course, with stylists’ lives busier than ever, taking a day out of the salon for training isn’t always possible. Luckily, thanks to smartphones, you don’t have to. You can now learn from the comfort of your own sofa, watch videos during your break or even brush up on the latest techniques while you’re travelling. “Hairdressers can use technology as a tool to learn and upskill at any given time,” explains L’Oréal’s Patricia. “Technology is about being in the present, knowing all that is new and relevant, but it is also about the future – predicting what trends and insights are coming next.” L’Oréal Access allows hairdressers to learn remotely – all

you have to do is log on. “L’Oréal Access is a digital platform bursting with tutorials and videos by key guest artists and teams showcasing trends on cut, colouring and styling techniques – and there are also business e-learning modules covering how to be savvy on social media” Patricia adds. Hairdressing Live is another innovative way of learning digitally. Launched by Paul Davey, co-owner of Davey Davey in Dublin, hairdressers can sign up to watch live streams of top hairdressers and educators sharing the secrets behind their most iconic looks and each session ends with a Q&A. “Hairdressing Live is more than just a step-by-step guide to techniques,” explains Paul. “We go much deeper, we delve into the mindset of each stylist, which in turn is what gets people thinking about making a difference with their careers. “Hairdressing Live is ultimately aimed at stylists who don’t have the ability to go and get educated somewhere, as they couldn’t travel because they have children, found it too expensive, or didn’t have the time. Many factors and obstacles can get in the way, so we have made it accessible so everyone can attend online.” Upcoming seminar leaders include Tim Hartley and X-Presion Creativos, all of whom can be watched online or live in the studio where the hairdressers will be working. “Education is the gateway to all our futures,” Paul continues. “It’s what grounds you, disciplines you and ultimately inspires you to continue in your field of expertise. We find ourselves in an ever-evolving industry. This is what captivates most of us about hairdressing – it always progresses so we need to constantly move forward.”

And that’s why BLONDME Bond Enforcing Premium Clay Lightener is a game changer… It’s an advanced, premium, soft-to-solid formula that creates an outer shell and allows the lightener to stay moist on the inside, unleashing its full lifting power, while the outer shell protects uncoloured hair from product transfer. Genius! Oh, and this lightener – which has up to seven levels of lift – has integrated Bond Enforcing Technology, so it’s minimising hair breakage during the service. And those blondes you create will be brilliant – so why not share them and how you got them just right? Schwarzkopf Professional is inviting colourists to showcase how they overcome the biggest in-salon blonde challenges for a chance to win a trip to Hamburg for an upcoming BLONDME production! Simply

work your colour magic using BLONDME and share it on social media with @schwarzkopfpro and the #ILOVEBLONDME and #BLONDMECONTEST hashtags. The best looks will also feature on Schwarzkopf Professional’s social wall. It’s sharing those stories that help all colourists create a community where you can learn and feel more confident about what you can create. That’s why BLONDME global ambassador Jack Howard, alongside global colour ambassador Lesley Jennison, will be on hand to answer questions about the most challenging blonde situations in live Q&As on Schwarzkopf Professional’s global social media channels. The exciting #ILOVEBLONDME campaign is all about sharing the secrets to achieving the best blonde, bespoke to each client, while showcasing just how versatile blonde really is. And there’s even a new technique to try out, courtesy of Jack! His new Caramel Kiss look showcases a dimensional balayage technique using BLONDME Bond Enforcing Premium Clay Lightener, find it on Instagram. MORE THAN 200 guests came to the Belfry Hotel to witness the 22nd Wella Business Network Live event, hosted by TV celebrity hairdresser and Michael Douglas. The list of speakers for the two-day event was as inspirational as it was diverse – Dick Strawbridge and Angel Adoree of Escape to the Chateau fame shared their story, while futurist researcher Graeme Codrington discussed how to approach technological change as an opportunity rather than something to be feared. Lord Price, former government minister and deputy chairman of John Lewis Partnership, revealed how to create a happy workforce; while Danish psychologist Mads Korsgaard and American freestyle rapper MC Supernatural delved into the science of creativity. The importance of being different was the topic of choice of entrepreneur and comic Cally Beaton; and Rob Forkan, founder of travel fashion brand Gandys, revealed the challenges he overcame to build his brand. Clinical psychologist Dr Tamara Russell discussed mindfulness and beauty industry expert Millie Kendall MBE analysed the recent British Beauty Council revealing the huge value and importance of the industry. With a post-dinner set from comedian Chris Ramsey and an afterparty until late, this was two days of entertainment and business insight to remember.

IT WAS AN EVENING where ‘effortless’ and ‘undone’ squared up to fierce, politically charged styling. The Coterie: In Session at Jet Studios in London pitted the easy-going, instinctive approach of session stylist Leigh Keates against educator and campaigner Lisa Farrall’s fearless, boundary-pushing agenda, masterfully steered by beauty journalist Sophie Qureshi. First up was Lisa, creator of education progamme WIG London, a passionate advocate for making the world of hairdressing textureneutral and collaborator with names such as Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran and Gisele. She created a jewelled braid and a punk blonde mohawk, before the unassuming Leigh, who’s worked with names such as Alicia Vikander and Jessica Chastain, delivered his signature wearable and effortless finish. He then took a risk with something bigger, bolder and inspired by RuPaul’s Drag Race. For the Coterie: In Session Challenge, the stylists were tasked with creating a ‘current bun’ in just five minutes, with Leigh’s messy side-bun winning the audience vote. And then every guest left with a goody bag from sponsor BaByliss PRO.
