L
ocated minutes from downtown Sarasota is a worldclass private club tucked away from the hustle of fastpaced city life. The Concession Golf Club boasts an award-winning 520 acre Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course designed in association with British great and fellow World Golf Hall of Fame member, Tony Jacklin. Named “Best New Private Course of 2006” by Golf Digest, the course was designed in honor of the 1969 Ryder Cup singles match between the two where Nicklaus conceded a putt to Jacklin. That gesture, known as “the concession,” rendered the two teams in a tie – the first in Ryder Cup history – and became known as one of the greatest acts of sportsmanship ever.
The Concession is a nature-rich design full of thought-provoking strategic challenges winding around wetlands, 150-foot pines and 200-yearold oaks with barely a home in site. And with the course’s expansive layout, golfers often feel as if they have the place to themselves. The Concession holds one of the highest Course and Slope Ratings by the USGA in the United States.

With wide verandas overlooking the peaceful surroundings of the golf course and iridescent lake views, the clubhouse pays homage to the traditional values and history of golf. The Concession also boasts a culinary masterpiece in its restaurant, Bistro at The Concession. The culinary artists and management have completed an intensive training program, making them the best culinary team around.

Country Club living: Inspired by the Italian villa-style of Sarasota’s famous Ringling Museum, our award-winning 44,000-square-foot clubhouse is nothing short of magnificent. Marble columns, graceful arches and elaborate finishes all harken back to the early 1920’s when elegance reigned supreme. Club life revolves around the informal and fine dining areas (casual or buttoned up, it’s your choice), as well as the meeting and card rooms where members and their friends regularly gather. For larger functions and special occasions, such as weddings, holidays and the occasional charity ball, there’s the grand ballroom or private wine room, the Wildwood Cellar,

The Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club provides a perfect setting for wedding celebrations. The elegant 4,200-square-foot Grand Ballroom is designed with tasteful chandeliers, richly colored carpet and a balcony that overlooks the golf course, nature preserve, and fountainfilled lake. various culinary competitions and we are fortunate to be the beneficiaries of his unique, creative and delicious creations.” The Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club Is very proud of its signature wine room, designated the “Wildwood Cellar”. A large arched glass front entry etched with the silhouette of a vineyard leads to a beautiful space with patina colored 66” hand-hammered copper top tables, imported from Chile and custom built in the United States. The room is also surrounded with authentic décor, featuring oak barrels shipped from DeLoach Vineyards in California, an antique wine press, antique cork removers, wine urns, artwork, and a 225 year old, 9 foot long cypress slab table top for wine
tastings. The ceiling highlights a hand-painted mural that brings the sky into the room and gives one the feeling of being outdoors. “We challenged ourselves to engage all five senses in the development of the room,” said Piazza. “It would not be just a room where we could serve fine dinners and wines, but one that would involve guests in taste, smell, sight, and sound, resulting in an overwhelming feeling of what it is like to be immersed in a signature room dedicated to the enjoyment of fine wine and food.” The Wildwood Cellar is named after the various woods used in its development and is available to area businesses and the community for private parties and special events.
New this year: The Lakewood Ranch Golf Academy which teaches the entire game to every player, whether you are a beginner or a Tour Professional, you can benefit from our teaching programs. Using state of the art V1 Digital Video Analysis we can analyze your swing and show you the most efficient way for you to swing a golf club.
For golfers, Lakewood Ranch offers a 54,000 square foot short game practice facility adjacent to the driving range and current putting green. This expansive area allows members to practice every aspect of their short game and features an 18,000-square-foot Tif-Eagle putting green. Golfers can rehearse challenges they will face throughout the 3 championship golf courses that make up Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club with the same features and conditions from a variety of lies and heights of grass. “Lakewood Ranch offers amazing golf opportunities whether you are a beginner or a future club champion. Our facilities are second to none in quality and offer an amazing membership value” says Director of Golf Bryan McManis.
Unlike many clubs in the Sarasota/Bradenton market, the Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club member levels have held steady during the economic downturn. Additional information about the club can be found at lakewoodranchgolf. com or call Maureen LaTessa, Membership Director to find out about their free 2-day VIP program. ■
Athletics: The Athletic Center has undergone some major additions to the resort pool area. We have added many large umbrella style structures as well as shade sails to keep the sun to a minimum. We now have hammocks, a children’s sand area, all new tables, chairs and chaise lounges as well as couches under the pavilion area. It truly has a resort feel. PlayGolfSarasota.com

A reason for the club’s success goes beyond the outstanding golf courses, tennis facility and clubhouse to a vibrant inclusive membership. As owners, each of the members share in the Club’s commitment to a continuous, financially responsible, improvement process which ensures our direction always supports our membership, not a corporate owner. The ambassador program ensures new members are quickly integrated into the Club and soon become equally committed to the success of the Club. “We have been attracting many families and active retirees because we are providing excellent value right now.” said General Manager/ COO, Dave Whalen. “People can join for much less than they think”. The adult membership spans all age ranges from the 20s on up, and the club has families with over 275 children. It is truly a family oriented Club. The membership is a unique 50/50 mix of homeowners and those who live in surrounding communities, downtown Sarasota, and the Keys. All members regardless of residence have the same rights and use privileges. (Continued on page 32.)

(Continued from page 30) Two 18 hole golf courses and a limited membership provide excellent availability and pace of play. Both courses were originally designed by Gary Player, with one redesigned by Rees Jones, the “US Open Doctor”, in 2005. “Each course has its own unique style and feel and you get a different experience each time you play.” said Matt Auen, the Director of Golf. “Both courses are always in impeccable condition.” From the “tips”, they are the most challenging, two-course test of golf in the Sarasota area. With 7 rated tees (four for men and three for women) on both courses, there is a distance and difficulty appropriate for any level of golfer. You can view the course layouts on the club’s website, www.laureloak.com. Two courses allow for at least one to always be open, regardless of maintenance or event schedules. There are many social and competitive events for men, women and mixed, so if you are looking for games, you will have no problem finding groups to play with. For those interested in a round with friends and family, or business entertainment, tee times are always available for individual play. Walking, at no fee, is allowed at any time with the approval of the pro shop. Four full time golf professionals, and a fifth in season, insure they can always help you keep your game in shape. The tennis facility is consistently ranked among the best in Sarasota with 12 well maintained Har Tru courts of which 8 are lighted. Members span the range from beginners to USTA 4.5 ratings, so you can always find games at your level of play. Clinics, leagues, tournaments and social play for men, women and mixed are offered throughout the week, satisfying even the most avid players. The biweekly Friday night mixers under the lights followed by dinner at the club are a favorite of the members. Also a favorite are the monthly professional exhibitions featuring local and nationally known players. With three, full time tennis teaching professionals on staff, there are plenty of opportunities to improve your game. With a choice of dining areas and menus, the professional chefs prepare succulent lunches, dinners and banquets for up to 350 people. The views of the golf courses and lakes provide a scenic backdrop for dining pleasure. Private parties and weddings are beautifully themed and impeccably catered. Wednesday nights at Laurel Oak are special. Reservations are “a must” because every table will be

filled and the energy at the two bars is electric. Each Friday evening features live entertainment and each holiday is celebrated. Add the numerous special events and members risk being partied out! And to top it off, the year round reciprocal arrangement with Bird Key Yacht Club offers a Downtown as well as “Out East” dining and entertainment option for the individual and business executive. For a video tour of the Club and to view the course layouts, please visit the website at www.laureloak.com. 1.500%, 1.604% APR with a 1% origination fee. The initial annual percentage rate (APR) may vary. The interest rate adjusts monthly based on the one-month LIBOR as published in The Wall Street Journal, plus a margin of 1.25%, and may increase. Rate and margin are current as of 9/27/11. Rate and margin are subject to application of standard underwriting criteria and may change without notice. For a $600,000 purchase of a primary residence, with a 20% down payment and a $480,000 mortgage, 120 monthly interest-only payments of $600 are followed by 180 monthly amortizing payments of $2,980, assuming interest rate remains constant throughout the adjustable term of the loan. Payments do not include amounts for taxes and insurance premiums. The actual payment obligation will be greater. When deciding whether an adjustablerate mortgage is right for your situation, you should consider the potential risk of rising rates and payments and such factors as how long you plan to own your home. This is an interest-only mortgage that allows you to pay only the interest on the money you borrow for a certain number of years. If you pay only the amount of interest that’s due, once the interest-only period ends, you still will owe the original amount you borrowed, and your monthly payment will increase—even if interest rates stay the same— because you must pay back the principal as well as interest. You should ask what the payments on your loan will be after the end of the interest-only period. If you are considering an adjustable-rate mortgage, ask what your payments can be if interest rates increase. Visit our Web site at www.merrillhomeloans.com for more information about the risks of interest-only mortgages. EVER A DESTINATION The pristine waters of Sarasota Bay and the gentle tropical climate that accompanies have long attracted travelers. It started as far back as the 16th century with the Spanish explorers who bestowed the name Zara Zote—the origin of the name Sarasota—and continued with the Scottish immigrants in the late 19th century who spurred Sarasota’s development in earnest. The immigrants were inspired to make the trip by real estate advertisements describing a tropical paradise that was home to a self-sufficient Scottish colony. Upon seeing the unspoiled terrain and underdeveloped colony, many felt they were sold a bill of goods and returned home, but those who stayed made the most of it. Appropriately enough for this publication, one of the very first developments in Sarasota was a golf facility. In 1886, Scottish John Hamilton Gillespie built two holes to quench his appetite for his native land’s game. The two holes are thought to be the first ever built in this country; by 1905, a full nine-hole course was finished. The city grew and became a destination for the rich and famous. The most influential and perhaps well-known of these vacationers was John Ringling, creator of the Ringling Brothers Circus. The family made Sarasota their winter home, and built the stunning Cà d’ Zan residence on the northern shore of Sarasota Bay, now the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. Sarasota also became the winter home of the circus operation earning the city its “circus capital of the world” moniker.
of fine shops and dining. Though, he didn’t live to see St. Armand’s through to its completion, his plan became a reality and still thrives today. As Sarasota grew in both size and notoriety, more wealthy and worldly visitors brought with them a taste for the arts. The city became a bastion of creativity. The movement was no better represented than with the construction of the Asolo Theater. Built in 1798 in Italy, the entire building was disassembled in the 30s. In the early 1950s the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art purchased the deconstructed theater, shipped its parts to Sarasota and rebuilt the structure on it property. Another Sarasota theater of note is the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright’s firm and constructed in the 1960s, its unmistakable shell shape and purple color make it one of the most recognizable landmarks on Sarasota Bay. There are other admired architectural accomplishments that dot Sarasota. In the middle of the 20th century, the town was a hot bed of architectural thought and experimentation. In fact, a modernist style all its own emerged in Sarasota and was named for the city. Whether it’s because of the vibrant artistic community, robust offering of golf courses, St. Armand’s Circle, or Spring Training baseball, residents and travelers alike are drawn to the seaside town for all sorts of reasons. There’s an appeal that’s inextricably linked to the city’s creative history and former circus magnate resident. The white powdery sand beaches are nice too. ■
John Ringling's effect on the city wasn't limited to the circus; he was a savvy developer and business man. One of his most shrewd endeavors was the development of St. Armand's Circle. A DAY DOWNTOWN So, you’ve got a day to spend in downtown Sarasota. You’re ambitious—excited to be away from the cold. Your day might start by rolling out of bed at the world-class Ritz-Carlton, greeted by a stunning view of the bay, or maybe you opted for one of the quaint bed and breakfasts downtown. Speaking of breakfast, it’s time to eat. You might go to the circle for a little people-watching and a light bite, or then again, Main Street’s unofficial morning headquarters, Pastry Art, may be more your style. With your appetite satisfied, it’s time to get after it. A walk down Main Street is the first move. The public sculptures catch your eye as you bounce from boutique to boutique. You take a turn on to historic Palm Avenue— naturally, it’s lined with grand palm trees stretching skyward. The lane’s many art dealers and antiquing opportunities tempt the shopper in you. Fighting the urge to buy an original painting by a local artist, you head towards the water. You make a right at Bayfront Park, a sea-breeze-basked peninsula that jets out into the bay and offers great views of both the skyline and the bay. That was a lovely stroll. Time to refuel…al fresco at Mattison’s City Grill or some fresh seafood at Barnacle Bill’s? You opt for seafood; it’s been too long since your last bite of grouper. Ready to attack the afternoon, you head just a little ways south of Main to charming Burns Square. A handful of Sarasota’s oldest buildings now house some of the most high-end retail spots and revered dining spots in town. While
there, a hard-to-find independent short film at Burns Court Cinema provides you some respite from the afternoon sun. In a creative state-of-mind, you take a stroll under the aged Oak trees in Towles Court, at the east end of downtown. One of the primary thoroughfares in the district is named Links Avenue, and yes, links as in golf links. There are no fairways or greens in sight, but the neighborhood is situated near where the clubhouse of John Gillespie’s early 20th century golf course may have sat. One of Coastal Living magazine’s top ten artist colonies, Towles’ colorful and distinctive cottages are a sight all their own. But, inside those walls is where you find the real delights. An ever-rotating collection that’s an art sampling all varieties of big, small, and stylish teases your eye.
In a creative state-of-mind, you take a stroll under the aged Oak trees in Towles Court, at the east end of downtown. Meanwhile, another sensory thrill is taking shape. Sunset’s approaching, and even if it’s your first time here, you know that’s something not to be missed in Sarasota. A twilight feeding of flamingos from the palm of your hand, and catching a glimpse of the rare Florida crocodiles at Sarasota Jungle Gardens is tempting, but you choose another lush setting to take in West Florida’s daily spectacle. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is situated on a gentle curve of the bay’s shore. In addition to its beauty, the grounds are home to a respected research facility. Selby Garden’s eight greenhouses are the site of extensive and advanced study of rare and tropical plant life. Most notably, the gardens are home to an extraordinary assortment of orchids—the living collection of more than 6,000 is remarkable. Visitors and reviewers alike rave about Marie Selby. It was named “the number one garden in Florida” by Florida Monthly, “one of America’s top ten botanical gardens” by Country Living Gardener magazine, and the number one “must do in Sarasota” by SARASOTA magazine.

by the second. The sun seemingly melts into the Gulf and is rewarded by applause from onlookers.
The early sundown setting is the scene of a burgeoning nightlife. The first stop is The Sports Page to catch the tail end of the hometown team. Sociable service and a victory have the kids ready to take on the town. As they leave the Page, as it’s affectionately called by locals, they find a vibrant city center abuzz with theater-goers, diners and socialites.
The dimming sky reminds your stomach that it’s dinner time… back to the hotel to freshen up. The kids, having returned from the beach, are ravenous after a day of swimming, volleyball, and tossing the frisbee. Refreshed and dressed to the nines, the family debates sushi at Pacific Rim in the Hillview neighborhood or authentic Peruvian at Selva on Main. Sushi it is.
Time for some dancing…a crowd of all ages packs the dance floor at Ivory. Everyone is moving to the beats of a top DJ visiting from Miami. After a couple hours, the kids cross the street to Smokin’ Joes for a night cap. They find an eclectic crowd of young professionals and trendy art school students lining the bar. One more drink with an umbrella in it and it’s time to head back.
Towles Court: Escape to a magical world... “It is Sarasota’s hidden treasure.”
The family regroups at the hotel room and decides against a moonlight swim. Tuckered out but satisfied, it’s been a day full of exciting choices. Luckily, there’s only one to make tomorrow—which golf course to play. ■
You make the mile-or-so trip to Southside Village, better known as Hillview by Sarasotans. You’re surprised with its bustle. It’s like a bonus to downtown. You ask your waiter about the district and learn that it’s surrounded by some of the city’s most historic and extravagant homes. And that it’s full of activity during the day as its shops and restaurants serve bunches of employees from nearby Sarasota Memorial Hospital and the adjacent medical offices. After dinner comes one of the highlights of your Florida trip, a visit to the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. For more than

BY LAND, OR BY SEA Any article, conversation, and most vacations in Sarasota start with Siesta Beach, and rightfully so. In 2011, it was named the #1 beach in the U.S. by Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, Director of Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research, or as he’s more commonly known, Dr. Beach. In his explanation of the selection, Leatherman said, “With some of the finest, whitest sand in the world, this beach attracts sand collectors from all over. Siesta Beach has clear, warm waters that serve for ideal swimming. The beach is hundreds of yards wide in the shape of a crescent, due to anchoring of onshore rocks to the north and a unique underwater formation of coral rock and caves…” But believe it or not, America’s best beach isn’t the only thing that attracts visitors and residents alike to Siesta Key. A collection of shops, restaurants and tropical themed bars, known as the village, has something to satisfy any kind of taste. Everything from famous breakfast spots to packed dance floors, gives someone the chance to get ready for the beach, or wind down after without wasting precious vacation or weekend time in the car.
Just north of Siesta, across gaping and bridgeless Big Pass, is Lido Key. Despite connecting directly to bustling St. Armand’s Circle, Lido has a more laid back feel than larger Siesta to the south. The glitz and glamour of the Lido Casino which operated in the mid 20th century is gone, but the island is still a popular destination. However, the tourist swell that’s so apparent in season is often more subdued on Lido Key.
70 PlayGolfSarasota.com
The beach runs the entire length of the island’s gulf side, and boasts shiny white sand. It’s s a giant crescent with a large public beach in its center. At the south end is South Lido Park. Its towering pines, boat accessibility and situation along Big Pass, Sarasota Bay, Brushy Bayou and the Gulf make for a unique beach experience. A nature trail with scenic views and boardwalks also give visitors the chance to immerse themselves in distinct Florida scenery. On the other end of the island, you’ll find another one-of-a-kind Florida spot. Northern Lido is a peaceful and secluded place with dunes and tall wind-swept grasses. Once at the northern extremes of Lido, you’ll look across New Pass at Longboat Key. Anyone on any of Longboat’s beach es is probably staying in one of the high rises, a condo or a private residence. Public beach access isn’t as abundant as on other islands, but the world-class amenities set Longboat apart. Accommodations are luxurious. Tennis facilities rank among the best in the country. The golf courses are highly rated. And, the dining is fine. All good reasons why Longboat Key was voted the #2 island destination in North America in Conde Nast Traveler’s 2010 Readers’ Choice Survey. A drive along the long, skinny key’s main thoroughfare, Gulf of Mexico Drive, is one of the most pleasant rides in the area. Resorts of all shapes and sizes, elaborate landscaping and the occasional peak at the beach can put even the most permanent resident in vacation mode. The trip across Longboat Key ends at the North end by crossing over Longboat Pass onto another of the area’s isles, Anna Maria Island.
A beautiful sunset off Siesta Beach.
A GUIDE TO RELOCATING ON THE SUNCOAST At its very southern end is one of the most unique of Anna Maria’s many beaches. Coquina Beach isn’t just named for the tiny crustacean, it’s also home to an abnormally high population of the colorful creatures. One glimpse at the wash of the waves, and you’ll see dozens of the little egg-shaped shells burrowing into the sand. The sandy show is a bonusadd to a lovely beach that’s easily accessible and buffered by towering pines.
The waters are teaming with all kinds of wild life, from invertebrates all the way to marine mammals. It's a really unique diverse ecosystemº river systems connect to the bay where we find grasses and sandbars. You can see the wildlife change with the different environments. It's very diverse here.∫ Several other public beach and water accesses are tucked between old-Florida homes and neighborhoods on Anna Maria. Fine waterside dining is contrasted by hole-in-the-wall shops and eateries. Many corners of Anna Maria have a funky, almost bohemian feel. This includes Bridge Street, which is often host to outdoor music and events. It’s the perfect place for a change of pace during the busiest times of the year in Sarasota and Bradenton. The islands all have their own unique style and personality, but those willing to take to the water can have an alltogether different experience. The region’s waterways are a whole other world to explore. As Kim Hull put it, “The waters are teaming with all kinds of wild life, from invertebrates all the way to marine mammals. It’s a really unique diverse ecosystem…river systems connect to the bay where we find grasses and sandbars. You can see the wildlife change with the different environments. It’s very diverse here.” Hull should know, not only because she is a marine biologist at Sarasota’s renowned Mote Marine Aquarium, but also because she regularly navigates the nooks and crannies of the coastline as owner of FLOW Kayak and Paddle tours. What started as the occasional paddle out to a sandbar for some yoga with friends has grown into one of the premier providers of aquatic excursions around Sarasota Bay.
A pair of bottlenose dolphins gracefully glide through the water.
Not only can FLOW’s outings be relaxing and fun, but can also be geared towards learning and fitness. “It’s a great extension of my job as a marine biologist,” she said. “It just kind of all gelled perfectly. And for golfers, paddling is a really good way to cross train. Golf is all about the core and this can really improve your rotational strength.” One of the most common routes of Hull’s trips provides a rare experience and scientific field trip all in one—the mangrove tunnels. Paddling through the thick vegetation that grows from under the surface is like being deep in a jungle. “When I take people out it’s easy for them see how cool the mangroves are, but I like teaching about the different kinds of mangroves,” Hull added. “They are also an amazing nursery for a lot of recreational fish. People are always amazed when I point out the little baby trout and mullet. Mangroves are all around a good thing. They’re really important.”

While the most popular tunnels are on South Lido, the very southern shore of Siesta Key is home to an equally exceptional watery venue. Midnight Pass was created by a hurricane in 1921. It moved up and down Siesta Beach, closed, reopened and closed again 24 years ago. Since then, the stable waters of the once flowing pass have created the perfect environment for birds, sea turtles, mangroves, sea grass and all kinds of fish.
Interestingly, Midnight Pass has been one of the most enduring civic debates in Sarasota. One side wants to preserve its current wildlife-friendly state, and the other side wants to open it up for another access to the gulf from the Intracoastal Waterway. Regardless of who ultimately wins the Midnight Pass debate, there’s no question that by land or by sea, there’s plenty to enjoy on the keys and waterways around Sarasota Bay. ■

701 TYLER DR — SARASOTA
Rarely available property located on deep sail-boat water and only a short walk to St. Armands Circle! This distinctive home was designed and built by local architect James C. Padgett in 1977. His work has been locally and nationally featured. This contemporary design features bold lines, exposed concrete block, rich wood accents, a spiral staircase, and unobstructed views from the front entry to the rear of the home. The modern, Pacific-infused style was clearly ahead of it’s time when this home was built. This design had “green features” before “green features” happened to be in our vocabulary. The concrete blocks were injected with foam to maximize their insulating capability, while allowing the architect to utilize the design aspects of the hand-crafted block construction. You are welcomed to this home with the presence of a large, shading mango tree at her entrance. As you enter, you can see straight through a flowing path to the bay and entertaining enclosure at the rear of the home. The waterside of this home sits in an environmentally protected area directly on Sarasota Bay, welcoming manatees, plentiful fish, tropical birds, and other Florida marine life and fauna. There are no bridges from your dock to the open waters of Sarasota Bay and the Gulf of Mexico! Plans for an optional 600 sq. ft. upstairs bonus room are also available. We welcome you to be one of the first to peruse this treasure in architectural design and to own a piece of Sarasota’s structural art history. PRICED AT $2,247,000

SUNCOAST LIVING
SARASOTA DEFINED Most beach towns are just that—beach towns. Their energy and economic tempo comes directly from the sandy shores and those who occupy their water during the day and hotels at night. That’s not the case with Sarasota. This city is as much an “art town” as it is a beach town. Sure, the most glamorous draw will always be the beaches, and that’s probably followed closely by golf and maybe even spring training. But while here, whether short- or long-term, people can discover a treasure trove of art in all its forms. Creative expression defines Sarasota as much as any beach or Nicklaus-designed golf course. If artistic pursuits were to up and leave Sarasota one day, the city’s personality would be turned on its head. And if artistic pursuits were to up and leave Sarasota one day, there would be an irreconcilable void in the way people live and travel here—consider the following… • As of 2008, Florida Congressional District 13, which encompasses Sarasota, was home to 1,690 arts related businesses that employed 6,258 people, generating millions in economic impact. • According to the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County (ACASC), full-time cultural workers generate more than $123 million in household income to local residents. • Also according to the ACASC, art audiences spent more than $50 million in local restaurants, hotels, retail, and parking in 2008.
ranked Sarasota 5th best small city for art in the U.S. And if you look at the town’s history, such notoriety should come as no surprise. The city and its people have long been entwined with the arts; its spectacular bay shore is dotted with art’s landmarks; its streets are named for influential artists and benefactors; its logo is the silhouette of sculpture’s most famous depiction of man, and street corners and unused public spaces are often turned in to displays. It’s a knot that was tied during the formative years of Sarasota. Early in the 20th century, the Ringling family, backed by its circus, an art form in its own right, was building an empire. An outpost of that empire was here in Sarasota. As word spread about the Ringlings’ winter retreat, a worldly group followed, bringing with them an appetite for the finer things in life. They spent their money planning showcases and building facilities, around which this region would grow.
Creative expression defines Sarasota as much as any beach or Nicklausdesigned golf course. If artistic pursuits were to up and leave Sarasota one day, the city's personality would be turned on its head.
• In a 2009 study conducted by University of Michigan professors, 33 like counties were compared. To quote the report, “Where Sarasota really stands apart from its peers is in its arts industry. Its share in theater, dance, and music companies ranks first among these counties. The second-highest share is in St. Louis city, [which is] well behind Sarasota.” • The U of M study also predicted sustained growth despite a struggling economy. “We view this industry as one of Sarasota’s strongest assets, and we expect that it will continue to grow as the county attempts to recover from the recession…” It’s pretty clear that there’s a lot of art, but it’s also at its finest in Sarasota. An ever rotating lineup of independent and foreign films, usually reserved for limited big-city screens, plays at Burns Court Theater. Plus, every spring, Burns and theaters all the way to Lakewood Ranch host the Sarasota Film Festival. Hundreds of films, A-list stars, and exciting events bring thousands together to celebrate the art form. Siesta Key Beach, voted the “Nation’s Best Beach”, one of the “Best Walking Beaches” in the USA and “The Best of the Best Sand”.
More institutions and facilities have formed in the decades since the Ringlings and their well-travelled friends lit the arty fire. Thanks to the educational developments, Sarasota has its own pipeline of talent. Unlike other school systems that have cut programs, the area’s public schools emphasize the arts. Most notable of these programs is found at Booker High School, home to the Sarasota Visual & Performing Arts Center (VPA). The program is intense, specialized and very selective. Its productions are award winning. A staggering 95% of graduates receive scholarships to continue their educations. And its alumni are wellpraised, the most famous of whom you probably remember—current Broadway star and American Idol season-seven contender, Syesha Mercado. At the next level, students are drawn to Sarasota’s Ringling School of Art and Design. In 1931, John Ringling agreed to lend his name to the school to help build its credibility. At the school’s opening ceremonies, Ringling said, “I know of no other school in America equipped as this one to educate in art…Here I hope a famous school of artists will rise, for though life is short, art is long.” Considering its world-wide renown, it’s safe to say the academy has since lived that charge. Ringling, Booker, and the several other institutions devoted to artistic development provide a constant stream of inspired displays and wide-eyed artists that harmoniously supplement an already jam packed calendar of major artistic events. Perhaps the most recognizable of those is the bi-annual Season of Sculpture. Headlined by the permanent “Unconditional Surrender,” a 25-foot tall depiction of the famous wartime
For a more rounded art experience, the Ringling International Arts Festival is a truly unique event. It brings some of the world’s finest artists to Sarasota annually. Dance, visual arts, music, and theater form a schedule typically loaded with world premier performances—all in this little “beach town.”
At the school's opening ceremonies, Ringling said, ™I know of no other school in America equipped as this one to educate in artºHere I hope a famous school of artists will rise, for though life is short, art is long.∫ And that’s just the tip of the iceberg… John Ringling would be proud to see that the same spirit he sought for the school bearing his name has spilled over in to the slice of Gulf Coast he called his winter home. Art is part of what Sarasota has been, is now, and will be. The pages allotted here simply do not provide the space to discuss every acclaimed venue, heralded event, or talented artist that shapes what Sarasota’s character…and many more pages would not either. But, skip a day on the beach or golf course, explore, and you can’t miss it. ■

WHY CAR SALES CONTINUE TO CLIMB AT
GETTEL NISSAN
Car sales continue to get better with each passing month and because of the yearlong upward trend many people are scratching their heads wondering how this can be in such trying times. With house foreclosures still on the rise, unemployment at seriously high levels, the economy as bad as it has ever been, and gas prices going up one day and going down the next, it’s hard to predict what the future holds. It seems like the industry continues to be challenged in different ways every time we turn around. Last year Toyota suffered devastating news when they had to recall millions of vehicles because of all things, safety issues, to which they responded and rebounded like only a company as strong as Toyota could and today they are back on track and thriving once again. When 2011 rolled around with the promise of a new start, Japan was rocked with an Earthquake and a Tsunami that had all of the Japanese manufacturers wondering how they were going to survive a potential nuclear meltdown let alone produce automobiles at the same time. For a brief period of time inventory in the US was affected, but considering what was going on in Japan, we all got through it and at this time everything is back to normal with regards to inventory. So here we are going through hard times and still selling more cars and growing. How? Here’s how. The manufacturers are incentivizing vehicles to make them affordable by offering low interest rates, customer rebates, special leases, college grad programs, 1st time buyer programs, owner loyalty programs and most importantly not raising the prices of the new model year vehicles. Here at Gettel Nissan our success has been in large part because of what Nissan has done with the product line in the last year. They have introduced new models such as the Juke, Murano Cross Cabriolet Convertible, brought back the Quest Minivan, re-styled the Versa Sedan, delivered the first true 100% electric vehicle, Leaf, and there’s more on the way for 2012 when the popular Altima, Sentra, Pathfinder, and Titan will all be re styled. The cars are becoming safer than ever, more fuel efficient and more affordable. Nissan vows to keep the pedal to the metal and remain aggressive to get us through these trying times. With great product and great incentives all that is left is great service. Gettel Nissan’s professionally trained staff is here to serve you any way that we can. The culture here is one of serving the customer instead of trying to always sell the customer. Times have changed and with all of the information that is available to the consumer, what sets us apart from most traditional dealerships is our approach to serving the customer. We don’t like playing the old game of “back & forth” we just put our best foot forward right up front and we give our customers options and let them decide what works best for them. As we continue to grow we welcome anyone looking for a quality Car, Truck, SUV, or Minivan that’s affordable and safe to drive to come visit our showroom and let us show you why car sales continue to climb at Gettel Nissan.

Taking You on a Tour of All Your Senses! Serenoa course architect, Mark Alden, set out to design a layout unlike the typical Sarasota golf courses. His vision was to combine the existing wetlands and natural lay-of-the-land to create a masterpiece that Florida Golf News calls one of the top 100 courses in Florida and one of the top three in Sarasota! . Bringing challenges into play on every hole created a course that keeps your attention throughout your round. Forget the usual tee-shot between two bunkers to a green guarded by two more bunkers found commonly at your typical area course and welcome the variety and challenge. The beauty of the course is evident from its superior tee to green conditioning as well as a variety of wildlife throughout the course. Deer, Turkey, occasional Wild Boar and a vast array of birds native to SW Florida can be found (and heard) around this pristine layout Serenoa offers a unique value-added package. Combined with your round players enjoy a quality food and beverage package of All Inclusive Breakfast, Lunch and 2 Draft Beers or Soft Drinks with rounds of golf before 11 am. And lunch and 2 draft beers or soft drinks are included with every golf round played between 11 am and 1 pm. After 1 pm rounds include 2 draft beers or soft drinks. Play in a Serene Setting The Groves is a par 65 short course, designed by famed architect Arthur Hill. The course is open to the public and is the favorite of many of the local golfers. The Groves is much more than just “another” short golf course and has numerous par 4’s and a par 5 where shot placement is key to playing the hole. The par 3’s offer challenging tee shots to the small undulating greens, with scenic old Florida landscape in the backdrops. Welcome to Oyster Creek Oyster Creek is situated inide a gated community in Englewood, Florida. The layout is very challenging for all skill levels. Oyster Creek was designed by Ted McAnlis and there are no gimme short par-three holes like on most Executive courses. The greens, which are beautifully manicured and quite sloped, are as big as the greens on par-72 courses. Not once in eight holes did either of our twosome have a putt which was straight and level. So any of the greens can easily be a three-putt adventure.

THE BEST AMATEUR ATHLETE IN FLORIDA
THE BEST AMATEUR ATHLETE IN FLORIDA On a steamy, summer day in 1979, a petite, blond lady stood on the 18th green of the Washingtonian Country Club. She had a two-stroke lead for her first ever championship. Arlene English, age 33, had been playing golf only three years, so it was unthinkable that she was two putts away from a victory over a field that was loaded with some of the best female golfers in Greater D.C. As her small hands lightly gripped her putter, she thought to herself: “Winning a championship is the best thrill I have ever had. I hope I have the ability and good fortune to win a few more”. As many of Arlene’s opponents would witness in the coming years, she made the 25-foot putt. The following year, she successfully defended her title and began a remarkable string of victories and records.
most avid fan. She is happier that she has ever been, and, at age 44, is playing the best golf of her life. Before Arlene left Washington, she had set several records, including one that has never before or since even been approached. At the very difficult and prestigious Congressional, which has hosted numerous majors, including the 2011 U.S. Open, she won the Woman’s Club Championship six of the seven years she entered. Since 1980, she had averaged a most enviable two titles a year and now had a total of 20. She is 5’3”, 100 pounds, fit and looking much younger that her age. Suddenly a shocking thing happened that would have totally defeated most people.
Arlene began losing vision, strength and stamina. She could neither read nor drive, she could barely walk and her weight was dropping at the rate of eight pounds a month. She was diagnosed as having Acute Advanced Type I Juvenile Diabetes. She began a strict regimen of four daily insulin shots, dietLet’s fast forward a decade to 1990. ing and rest. careful dieting, not to mention the possible loss of legs or life. Despite the dire situation, it never occurred to her to complain or to feel sorry for herself. She retrieved a belief that she had written many years earlier, which was: “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it shall achieve. A mind is a powerful tool. With faith and dedication, an ordinary person, such as I, can realize extraordinary success.” When consoled by her friends for her misfortune, she told them that she “was fine” and was indeed “a very fortunate person”. She quoted them something she had read years before: “The past is history. The future is a mystery. This moment is a gift. That is why it is called the present.” Arlene had overcome obstacles before, and she would do so again. It is now 1991, and Arlene is again beginning to play a little golf. John, who had just become her fiancé, had been her almost sole support team as she learned to cope with the devastating disease. One morning she told him: “John, last night I prayed for a long time, and I asked God for a special gift. I asked Him to allow me to live long enough to win 100 championships.” Every golfer knows that winning 100 championships is essentially impossible. Even if Arlene were to average three a year, also extremely unlikely, she would not reach her goal until age 71. Even healthy people past their mid-sixties don’t win championships. At the time she set the goal, she weighed only 90 pounds, and her close friends doubted that she would ever be able to play in another tournament, much less win it. Moreover, most champion golfers begin playing golf before their teen years, not at age 30 as did Arlene. In professional golf, the great Sam Snead and Kathy Whitworth hold the records at 84 and 88 wins respectively, and their records will probably Continued on page 106 PlayGolfSarasota.com

through 2000, she had averaged an incredible eight titles a year, including many highly competitive and prestigious events, such as The Pebble Beach Classic. Along the way, she also broke many records for amateur females, many of which still stand. Inside her trophy room over 150+ trophies are exhibited. I wanted Arlene thinking about playing, winning and living and not about dying.” Let’s fast-forward another decade to 2000. Arlene had just undergone the installation of an insulin pump and blood glucose implant, which saved the second half of her golf career if not her life. She now had an unbelievable 97 championships and was on a roll. She was facing three tough tournaments where most of the very strong fields were made up of females 20 to 30 years younger than Arlene. Her 98th victory was at an international competition in France. Number 99 was The Executive Cup for Club Champions in Hawaii. And, victory number 100 was at the Golf Digest Women’s National Championship at Pine Needles. SHE HAD DONE IT! At age 54, Arlene McKitrick had accomplished the impossible! In the 10-year span from 1991
Popular, long-time, local professional, Gary Geiger, likes to tell his favorite Arlene story. It happened in 1992 when he was the head pro at Longboat Key Club where Arlene had dominated women’s golf for several years. A lady member saw, in the pro shop, the poster announcing that year’s club champion, and she remarked to Gary: “Thank goodness someone finally beat Arlene English. Who is this McKitrick person?” Continued on page 108

Continued from page 106 Gary replied: “I hate to disappoint you, but they are the same. Ms. English and Mr. McKitrick got married earlier this year.”
Let’s fast-forward another ten years to 2010. Arlene had blown past #150 two years earlier, and naturally had reset her goal to 170. The victories, records and awards had continued to pile up. After her 50th birthday in 1996, she had won the first 47 (consecutive) senior tournaments that she had entered while still winning numerous events open to lady golfers of any age. In 2001, she had been inducted into the Senior Golfer’s Hall of Fame. Google had added a multi-page spread on Arlene. Locally, she had set course records at Longboat (67), Prestancia (69), The Ritz-Carlton (65) and The Concession (69), all of which still
stand. Her total titles now stood at 162, and she had, over the past 30 years, won championships in 24 U.S. states and in 12 different countries. We are now in the present, and so far, 2011 has been quite eventful. Arlene had just won the International Seniors Championship for victory #166 when a frightening thing occurred. She was diagnosed with possibly-deadly melanoma and was advised to have immediate surgery followed by chemotherapy. Bad fortune had again visited this nice lady. Of course, Arlene dealt with it with her usual positive attitude. She said: “It’s just one of life’s double bogies. I’ll bounce back and seek out my next birdie opportunity.” True to form, her recent scans have all been cancer free. Arlene has apparently emerged victorious over adversity once again. Last month, near Columbus, Ohio, Arlene won the club championship at Tartan Fields shooting 74-74, which was three shots lower than the score of the men’s champion. It had happened less than five weeks after her surgery, and it was win #167. Arlene had just turned 65, and she had come a long way since she lined up that 25-foot putt in 1979. And, she was still looking forward to more. ■ Bill Tompkins August, 2011

THE BEST AMATEUR ATHLETE IN FLORIDA Writer’s Comments: Early this year, when I was asked to write this piece, I had only met the McKitricks socially at the Concession and at The Ritz and had played golf with them just once. I liked them both, and I particularly enjoyed John. While pleasant and helpful, I viewed Arlene to be somewhat intense and one-dimensional. Because of the change in this magazine’s publication schedule, this writing effort intermittently covered almost six months. It began when Arlene had just won #162 and ended at #167. It also spanned the melanoma scare and many attacks of seriously low or high blood sugar attacks. Also, because the subjects turned out to be far more interesting than I had initially imagined, there was much more research and were several more informal interviews than would typically be justified for a short piece like this. As this project progressed, my admiration and respect for John soared, and I realized the huge role he had had in Arlene’s remarkable successes. Arlene, however, I had sold far short. Arlene McKitrick is multi-dimensional. Her interests are many, and her intellectual curiosity is enormous. She is a prolific reader and has read most known books on golf, which surprisingly is second on her priority list. On her first, self-help and self-esteem, she has read almost 500 books. These range from the ancient works of Machiavelli and

Sun-Tzu, to Emerson, to the Carnegies and to Peale and the modern best sellers. Despite her accomplishments, she is humble and unpretentious. She is warm, compassionate and generous. She has a delightful sense of humor, she loves life, and she enjoys every minute of it. In describing Arlene, “passion”, “loyalty”, and “courage” would be understatements. One of our close mutual friends asked me: ”How could someone so fiercely competitive be so gentle and sweet?” (I had no answer.) While not embracing any organized religion, she is quite spiritual and has great faith. She believes that a Higher Power guides all and that everything happens for a reason and for the best. Although Arlene’s severe diabetes has undoubtedly cost her several titles and records (my research revealed that her typical scorecard contains a lot of pars and birdies, but a couple of double bogies, usually on the back nine when her blood sugar goes berserk), she never complains or makes excuses. Six months ago, I set out to write a piece about a great golfer who also happened to be a nice lady. I ended up writing about a remarkable, magnificent human being who also happens to be a very good golfer. B.T. 8/1/11

in Osprey have known Tim Beckwith as its golf pro. Tim is one of only 337 PGA Master Golf Professionals, a small elite group indeed. Some consider it the master’s degree for PGA professionals. To earn his title, Beckwith had to write an extensive thesis on golf instruction, present it to other master pros for review then, survive a rigorous interview. One could say he prepared for the challenge most of his life. Born outside Detroit, Beckwith grew up in Brooksville. When his mom got a job waitressing at an area golf course, Beckwith was hooked. The golf course provided a safe haven for a then young man to mingle with elders and fall in love with the game. Tim and his wife Jill struggled for a few years having a child. About 18 weeks into the pregnancy of what would deliver them a boy, Jackson, Tim and Jill made a decision. They both wanted to provide him with the best set of tools to be as good a person as he could be.
Golf, with its many parallels to life, was the obvious vehicle. Beckwith had writing experience, having authored his PGA thesis and served as a sports correspondent for the St. Petersburg Times while in college. So just before Jackson started preschool where he would soon learn the basics of reading, The Beckwith’s published The Front Nine, a book written for Jackson. “It’s the only sport that you have to officiate yourself,’’ Beckwith said. ”Just like in life, you don’t necessarily have a referee watching everything you do to make sure you’re doing it correctly. It’s about making good choices, day in and day out. The lessons themselves are things that my wife and I will be teaching him, day in and day out.’’ Because the book is about life experiences, with such chapter titles as Play Fair, Perspective and Temper, Beckwith said it was fairly easy to write. Luckily, Tim located a golfspecific publisher, who liked the first draft and was able to avoid multiple submissions and denials from larger publishing groups. From start to finish the process was just about 9 months, an interesting parallel to gestation.

little red head touched many lives with his never-ending smile and infectious laugh,” Tony said. “He was truly loved and adored by all who knew him.” Friends and family decided they had to do something to, as they put it, “provide a lasting tribute to this little boy;” so started The Ryder Anthony Panico Memorial Fund. Supporters were eager to get involved. In the first six months the Fund had already received between six and seven thousand dollars. Ongoing donations and an annual golf tournament helped buoy the fund and spread awareness. When I set out to do some background research for this article, I knew I wanted to include some insight from Jack Nicklaus; he’s always been one of the most outspoken advocates of junior golf. So, I went to one of those quote websites…and what’s the first remark listed? A concise, yet profound Nicklaus-statement that couldn’t be any more appropriate for the purpose of this article: “A kid grows up a lot faster on the golf course. Golf teaches you how to behave.” Two years ago, many local kids lost perhaps their best opportunity to tap into those formative forces Nicklaus alludes to. The struggling economy forced county education officials to make some tough decisions. And one of those was to eliminate select middle school athletic programs—golf was on that list. A few years before that, Tony Panico, a local club professional and co-publisher of this magazine, and his family endured a loss of their own. This was a much more personal and affecting loss, however. He and his wife’s son, Ryder, passed away unexpectedly at just 10 months old. In his short time, Ryder was still able to make a big impact. “The precious
The charity gave the scholarships out every year, but Tony and the others involved were still looking for the right cause to affiliate with. The county’s decision to cut golf from middles schools was difficult to swallow for local lovers of the game, but as it often does, from strife came opportunity. While at a PGA chapter meeting a handful of professionals that worked with the local First Tee and the Greater Sarasota Junior Golf Association were mulling over the idea of starting up a program to fill the gap left by the elimination of competitive middles school golf. Tony heard about the idea and knew it was a perfect fit for Ryder’s Fund. With the backing of The Ryder Anthony Panico Memorial Fund, middle schoolaged golfers would once again have a venue in which to compete. Local business professional Mark Leetzow and Lexi McKinney, Sarasota’s First Tee Executive Director, partnered with PGA Professional, Mike McClellan and Larry Flynn from the Greater Sarasota Junior Golf Association to help build the
MIDDLE SCHOOL GOLF
program. The group started spreading the word to middles schools, and in the first year of the program, 2010, seven full teams competed twice a week for five weeks. PGA professional Mark Bruce said the organizations form a perfect partnership. “The First Tee, Greater Sarasota Junior Golf Association, and Ryder’s fund compliment the other perfectly since the middle school program is working with kids who have had no previous exposure to golf and some who have been playing for a few years,” Bruce said. “Together they bring the middle school golf program structure and a systematic way of learning The First Tee nine core values.”
The chance to play some of the best local courses is one thing, but an emphasis on the whole person through First Tee’s values is really what makes the program valuable for the development of its players. “First, golf is an individual sport by definition,” Leetzow explained. “Playing on a team as an ‘individual’ creates interesting responses for juniors. They have to
learn to rely on themselves, but at the same time be aware that how they play affects the outcome of the whole group. That’s where the core values come in and help the players mature—whether in the classroom, playing another sport, or life in general.” Professionals in the area have been eager to get involved and help the program grow. “I think that’s why we all get into this profession anyway,” PGA profesional Mike McClellan said. “We all started playing around the same age as these kids and we want to give back.” McClellan said their efforts would not be possible without that charitable spirit in the golf community. “We wouldn’t have the program without the support of the finest PGA professionals in the area,” he said. “Local clubs have been great in giving the program access to their facilities. Although the season is short, it requires great coordination from many clubs…giving us access to carts and practice facilities as well as staying past normal hours to make certain that we have everything that we need.” It’s amazing to think that a program that offers so much sprouted from the loss of a county funding and the loss of a child. Ryder surely would have done a lot of his growing up on the tees and greens around Sarasota, and thanks to the fund that bears his name, lots of kids who otherwise might not have had the chance to grow up around the game will have the chance to learn about life a little faster. ■

To impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.
OUR VISION Our vision is to teach The First Tee Nine Core Values™; providing the vehicle through which kids can accomplish their dreams, thrive socially, excel academically and athletically, and become productive members of society with integrity, strong family values and commitment to community.
NINE CORE VALUES™ HONESTY, INTEGRITY, SPORTSMANSHIP, RESPECT, CONFIDENCE, RESPONSIBILITY, PERSEVERANCE, COURTESY, JUDGMENT The First Tee has established Nine Core Values that represent some of the many inherently positive values connected with the game of golf. These Nine Core Values have been incorporated into The First Tee Experience and have proven to
positively influence the behaviors of young people as well as inspiring adults to mentor, coach, volunteer and invest in making an impact on our community. The First Tee of Sarasota/Manatee was formed in 2000 and serves over 1200 youth from both counties. We provide our golf and life skills programming at Tatum Ridge Golf Links, Rolling Green Golf Club and Serenoa Golf Club, all with an 18-hole course and complete practice areas that includes a driving range and putting green. Children ages 5-18 (as long as they are still in high school) can join. The activity fee allows members to utilize the golf courses and the Learning Center, and enters them into The First Tee Life Skills Program. Fee includes Life Skills materials. MISSION STATEMENT The objective of the Greater Sarasota Junior Golf Association is to “OPEN THE DOORS TO THE WORLD OF GOLF FOR JUNIORS” in the greater Sarasota area through instruction and competitive programs. The objective of the Board of Directors and membership is to do whatever is necessary to promote the interest in golf to persons under the age of nineteen. To this end, the GSJGA stresses learning the basic fundamentals of the golf swing, etiquette and rules, and encourages sportsmanlike competition. We attempt to provide access to professional instruction, supervised play with peers, affordable play at area golf courses, opportunities for competitive excellence and the encouragement of sportsmanship,
skill, academics and fun, developing both the competitive golfer and the young person who enjoys the game for its life-long recreational and social benefits. Since incorporating in 1974, our program has grown to one of the largest in Florida and has received national recognition. We believe that while the juniors in our program receive many benefits from our program, the local community benefits as well. The GSJGA is open to all youngsters in the area for a minimum registration fee, regardless of race, color, national or ethnic origin. We attempt to expose all area youths, not just those who would be exposed through golfing family and friends, to our programs. The community

These are the premises for the game of golf as well as life. We believe that our programs will benefit the youths in their personal and professional lives. We hope to continue the growth of our program participation into the future. Our main program takes place in June & July. In addition to instruction, we offer 9-Hole (Futures Tour) and 18-Hole (Regular Tour) tournaments that each culminate in a season-ending event. In 2011, the Futures Tour played at Peridia G&CC and the Regular Tour had a
two-day tournament at The RitzCarlton Members Club. A Family Fun Golf & Awards event closes our summer program. In addition to the above, we host a Parent-Child event and also provide a chance for low handicap players to play in our Elite Junior Tour. These are two-day events that offer Junior Golf Scoreboard points. We send 4 teams to the FSGA Junior Team Tournament each year to represent us. The Winter Tournament Series starts up in January and runs through May, one Futures Tour and one Regular Tour event each month, on a Saturday or Sunday. We offer a lot of opportunities for youngsters to improve their games and to meet other local junior golfers. ■

COMMUNITY GOLF
Celebrating 100 years of Life & Golf On September 30, 2011 Gus Andreone celebrated his 100th Birthday. It became a community affair to say the least. Gus, and his wife Betty, are 25 year members at Palm Aire Country Club and the Club pulled out all the stops. The Board of Trustees planned the event for over a year, and did not skip any details. Media coverage, celebration dinners, series of stories in the Club newsletters over a four month period, and the grand finale is yet to come. In October the Club will wrap up the celebration with the dedication of its new Gus Andreone Practice & Teaching Facility, which includes expansion of the driving range, an in ground artificial turf hitting system, a private teaching tee, and special monument to the man himself. Gus is not only a legend in the community, but also as the third oldest card carrying PGA of America Member, he is certain to garner attention in the national ranks of professionals. Gus started in the business of golf as an assistant pro in 1934. After serving a five year apprenticeship he was elected to PGA membership in 1939. In 1947, after serving three years in World War II, and working as a Caddy for a couple of summers, he was named Head Professional at Edgewood Country Club in Pittsburgh, PA, a position he held for 30 years. Gus had a passion for teaching the game to people of all walks

of life. His favorite memories are of helping players develop as golfers. Helping people reach deep within themselves and fall in love with the game has been more rewarding than any course record score or tournament victory. Gus knows a thing or two about course records and magical moments playing golf. His score of 66 still stands as the course record at Edgewood, and his most memorable shot came in competition. One year, playing the final hole of the Pennsylvania State Open, Gus hit a laser like OneIron into the hole on the Par 4 18th Hole to close out a score of 69.

Today, Gus continues to play two or three times a week, and even Palm Aire Head Professional Steve Yates, keeps a close eye on his wallet, when waging battle against Gus. Steve fondly remembers a match several years back where he and a member went head to head against Gus and another Palm Aire member. Steve remembers vividly that he and his partner were playing lights out golf that day; suddenly the skies opened up on the 15th hole, and forced them back to the clubhouse early. When asked by the bartender if they were going to go back out and finish the match? Steve answered simply, “no need, Gus closed out the match on the 14th hole. Gus crushed us.” Always the gentleman, Gus simply winked at the bartender and offered words of praise about his opponents’ efforts. ■

some mundane daily activity as simple as walking up stairs. Unexpected accidents can happen to anyone but, Justin Kotlarczyk, a physical therapist at Request Physical Therapy in Bradenton, said that he sees a couple reoccurring themes in the casual golfers that come to see him. “Seventy-five to eighty percent of my patients have some kind of lower back injury, and those are the most harmful to a golf game.” he said. “Most of those injuries aren’t specifically from golf, but rather a result of the aging process.” Justin Kotlarczyk MSPT, ATC, CSCS 701 Manatee Ave. W., #103 Bradenton, Florida 34205 (941)-567-6287
After hitting a putt like any other, Fred Couples was forced to take a knee on the practice green. Fred Funk won a tournament in Mexico; the next week he couldn’t even tee it up. Two holes into a tournament on a Thursday, John Daly was distracted by a spectator taking a picture in his backswing; he had to withdraw. And Greg Norman, one of the most successful golfers of all time has kept his distance from the senior circuit. Four different golfers, four very different and mysterious sounding circumstances, but they all share the same culprit—a back injury. Generally speaking, the more common an injury is to a particular sport, the less severe the consequences are that come along with it. That is however, definitively not the case with back injuries and golf.
128 PlayGolfSarasota.com
Obviously, pros are more susceptible to an injury directly resulting from golf activity than the weekend warrior, retiree or writer. For us mere humans, injuries don’t typically happen on the course or practice range, we aren’t there enough. We get hurt when we lift a box, play a pick-up game of basketball, or during
With age, the body’s core, which is made up of the back and abdominals, naturally weakens. And while the pain may reside exclusively in the back, all the core muscles work together, and as a result, weakness in the stomach muscles are often the cause of back trouble. “Core strength is important to the golf game, but it’s even more important in everyday life,” Kotlarczyk said. “All the bending and twisting we do places high demands on the center of our bodies.”
™Core strength is important to the golf game, but it's even more important in everyday life, Kotlarczyk said. To help patients handle those everyday demands, and return to the golf course, Kotlarczyk designs a comprehensive core strengthening and stretching program. Treatments like massage, heat, ultrasound and electric stimulation may feel good, but aren’t necessarily the best promoters of the healing process. “They are beneficial in early stages,” Kotlarczyk said of what he calls passive modality treatments. “But as things progress, the patient has to be physically active in order to return to the functions they want to.” Kotlarczyk demonstrates and supervises the patient’s customized exercises until he is sure they can do them inde-
REQUEST PHYSICAL THERAPY pendently. But it doesn’t stop there; the patient performs the exercises on a schedule determined by the therapist. She will also make subsequent visits to the office to determine progress and adjust the program as needed. A treatment plan like this is the best way to return to functionality, safely and completely. It always depends on the severity of the symptoms, but in most cases, patients recover all their strength and mobility within 6-8 weeks, and have a very good chance of sustained, long-term health. In place of a visit to the doctor or physical therapist, back braces have become a popular do-it-yourself fix. But, Kotlarczyk warns against relying on braces to heal an injury. “Once you put braces on, the human body becomes lazy, and instead of muscles gaining strength they become inactive and become dependent on the brace,” he explained. “They are good for an initial acute injury or chronic instability, but they can cause weakness and even be detrimental in the long run.” Thankfully, there are things we can do to help prevent the pain and recovery demanded from a back problem. And, at his own potential peril, Mr. Kotlarczyk generously agreed to share some of his suggestions. “First and foremost, start strengthening, stability, and flexibility exercises as early in life as you can,” he said. “That will definitely cut down on the possibility of injury as you progress through your life and golfing career.” While may require a lifetime of dedication, there are measures a golfer can take the day of a round to help prevent injury or debilitation that can lead to injury away from the course. And according to Kotlarczyk, it all starts with stretching—before the round and after. “You should always stretch before a round,” he said emphatically. “Go with dynamic stretches that mimic golf movements. You’ll also want to warm
up, not to the extent that it’s cardio and your heart is pounding, but start gently and progressively work up to full speed. And, even if you feel warm and loose after the 18th hole, you are neglecting your body if you don’t stretch after the round. Stretching after is actually more beneficial than stretching before. It decreases chances for delayed onset stiffness and soreness, and helps prevent injury in daily activity.”
™First and foremost, start strengthening, stability, and flexibility exercises as early in life as you can, he said. ™That will definitely cut down on the possibility of injury as you progress through your life and golfing career. Golf can be painful enough on one’s psyche, there’s no need to take any physical aches home as well. And, now that you’re armed with a bit more knowledge, the next time you’re on the second hole of a tournament on Thursday, playing for a drink at the 19th hole, or helping a friend move, you’ll have a better chance of doing it pain free. ■

Do you know people who can eat anything they want and maintain a perfectly svelt figure? Well, that’s not me. And, with over two thirds of Americans battling extra pounds and obesity, it’s not the case for the majority of us. At 8 years old, my pediatrician told me I had to lose weight, setting me on a 15 year dieting roller coaster. I lost weight and felt proud. I gained it back and felt guilty and ashamed. It’s a horrible way to live. It doesn’t have to be that way. Today, I cannot overemphasize how blessed I feel to be healthy and free of my weight struggles. I say it’s a miracle after truly thinking I was going to battle food for the rest of my life. While working on my Masters Degree in Nutrition, I found out what works for me and decided to begin teaching what I had learned to others. I discovered that what works for me works for them too. There is an answer. You can maintain a healthy weight. My name is Rebecca Kloss and I am a Registered Dietitian, counseling clients at Food for Thought, LLC in Sarasota, FL. I am here to help you. The first step is to learn how to get rid of all of the inflammatory, toxic items in your diet. A two-week commitment to clean eating. A good dietitian can teach you how to do this. It will likely be the first time in your life that you are completely free of chemicals, additives, preservatives, and processed foods. Your cravings die down and you feel great. Of course, this part of the program involves buying and preparing fresh foods. Real food. Not food that comes in a box, can, or drive-through window. Not food with 18 ingredients that you have never heard of before. In order to avoid impulse eating, we must plan ahead to have our homes stocked with fresh and healthy food. Getting to
In the beginning we tend to make time for our newfound transition to wellness because we are so excited to be looking and feeling better. We are proud to be taking care of ourselves and are willing to put in the extra effort. But, sometimes after this “honeymoon” period, or during times where we may experience a plateau, we find that we just don’t have the same energy or commitment to make the time. We find ourselves skipping meals and then grabbing whatever is available or running out to grab a bite to eat at a restaurant. Skipping meals can be a problem. In my experience, bad things happen when we are hungry. Have you ever gone to the grocery store hungry? How does a restaurant menu look when you are starved? When I have skipped a meal and then go to a restaurant and a plate of nachos walks by, it might be trouble! But if I have already had a satisfying snack, the menu looks completely different. I find myself looking for something delicious but “light.” That’s where I want to live - in the “I’ll just have something light” world.
Another challenge in a transition to wellness is boredom. With such an abundance of unhealthy pre-packaged foods to choose from, no one seems to get bored with them. Sadly, many of us depend on these convenience foods more often than we would like to admit. There are some great simple foods that cater to good health, but they might

be expensive or hard to find. Healthy choices in restaurants are often limited, and I know from experience that my clients who eat out three or more times per week slow their weight loss drastically, even when they are trying to make healthy choices. For those who enjoy cooking and have the time to dedicate to it, I can teach you how to fit most recipes into the healthy revitalizing program, providing you with an endless array of fantastic food selections. For those who prefer to leave the cooking and creativity to someone else, I have an exciting new recommendation! Recently, I had the pleasure of introducing my program to Sarasota Personal Chef Karis Lynch, owner of Gourmet ‘A Go-Go. Karis came to me wishing to improve her own eating habits and has completely taken on my pure, clean eating program. During her transition to health and wellness she recognized that, as a professional chef, she has a distinct advantage, so she decided to develop a meal program chock full of recipes suitable for other Food for Thought clients and for anyone who wishes to eat well and enjoy delicious
Karis creates new and exciting weekly menus with a variety of fabulous entrée and side dish options that fit the program perfectly. The meals are natural with no chemicals, additives, or hormones and with minimal added fats. It’s as simple as choosing the dishes and quantity you desire. You can pick up meals from her Sarasota location or, for a small fee, have your meals delivered to your home or office. What a great alternative for providing fabulous, delicious and healthy meals for yourself (and your friends and family) for the week! Best of all? She has made it easily affordable ~ costing less than most restaurant meals. I have been utilizing her services and love it! I can tell you I’m eating better than ever with Karis’ program. It provides me with the opportunity to fill up on a fantastic array of fresh, healthy foods each week, and this variety gives me a better balance of the nutrients I need to stay healthy. My clients and I refuse to suffer, because if we suffered, the program wouldn’t serve us long term. Karis’ meals are a healthy “no suffering” approach to get out of a rut and try a host of tantalizing new foods we might not have known how to prepare or otherwise known to select. So, would you like to eat fabulous meals every day, and not gain weight? I’m here to tell you that it is possible - with a good dietitian to help you understand all of the details of a healthy, clean eating program, and the services of a special personal chef like Karis Lynch. We hope that this collaboration of Food for Thought, LLC with Gourmet ‘A Go-Go will help those of you seeking a healthier way to live succeed with gusto! ■

Many shoulder, hip, and back injuries have been suffered by players unwilling to recognize the warning signs their body is sending. Stiffness, twinge-like pains, overall aches masked by ibuprofen. Incorporating good massage therapy into your life and game will provide your body the ability to recover faster after a round. Kitty provides wonderful care to her clients. Call for an appointment, available to non-members.

Don’t Let Back Pain or Sciatica Ruin Your Life!
You’ve got too many dreams left undone. Too many special moments waiting to be experienced. Life is too short to let pain slow you down. Yet, for many, severe back pain and sciatica puts a halt to any enjoyment in life. Maybe you can’t play golf like you used to. Or you’re not able to enjoy that cruise like you should.

It’s time for you to find out if spinal decompression will be your back pain and sciatica solution.
The conditions this amazing treatment has proven successful for: Herniated discs Degenerative disc disease Back pain * Sciatica Facet syndromes My name is Dr. Joseph Arme, the owner of Circle Chiropractic in Sarasota. If you’ve checked into spinal decompression therapy you may have been shocked by the price. I understand what it feels like to live in pain, so I offer a true spinal decompression program at a reasonable fee. I’ve seen hundreds of people with disc herniations, back problems and sciatica, who were once told surgery was the only option, become pain free. I was one of them.
