Laurel Oak Country Club is a private, member-owned club located in Sarasota, Florida. Its outstanding facilities include two championship golf courses crafted by Gary Player. The West course was redesigned by Rees Jones, the famed “U.S. Open Doctor”, in 2005. The club’s other amenities include 12 Har Tru tennis courts, a full-size heated swimming pool and a beautiful 45,000 square foot clubhouse. The club is nestled on over 800 peaceful acres near downtown Sarasota with its renowned arts and cultural district, and within easy reach of the finest beaches in Florida. Siesta Key Beach was named “the Best Beach in America” in 2011. The club is sited in a magnificent gated residential community of over 400 single family homes. However, because the club enjoys such a widespread excellent reputation, many of our members reside outside the community.

Like the game itself, the story of golf in Sarasota began in Scotland with a man name John Hamilton Gillespie.

In the late 1880s, Gillespie traveled to the wild lands of “Sara Sota” with his clubs in hand and a vision for what this land of natural beauty could become. There are select, coveted places that carry on the venerable traditions of the game in the modern day. Places that echo legend and lore swept from the links of days past. Today, there comes a new traditional golf club inspired by the ancient story of golf as it was told in Sarasota: The Founders Club.

CTC LENDING, LLC An affiliate of PNC Bank, National Association Homeownership can sometimes feel out of reach for many families, considering the criteria of the current home lending market today. For these reasons, CTC Lending LLC is committed to helping its clients achieve the dream of homeownership through a consultative approach to evaluating and balancing a borrower’s needs and goals, “says Brad Benson, the Supervising Loan Officer at CTC Lending, LLC. CTC Lending, LLC is an affiliate of PNC Bank, National Association, one of the top ten lenders in the country. In an ever-changing industry- such as the mortgage industry- it is imperative to align yourself with mortgage loan officers that understand the requirements. “We are able to provide the financial strength and stability of a national lender along with a personalized, local touch and a commitment of excellent service,” he said.
“I was able to become a student of my profession early on and came to understand the reasoning for the specific documentation requests from underwriting. In today’s mortgage world, effective communication as to why a document is requested is almost as important to the client as the requested document itself.”
Having started his career in mortgages while attending Colgate University as an intern for a small mortgage bank in his hometown of Syracuse, New York, Benson was able to see all facets of the mortgage industry from the origination of the loan by a mortgage loan officer, the processing and underwriting of the credit qualifications, the closing of the files with the firms’ attorneys and final stages in the post closing department. “The experience was invaluable to my professional development. I was able to become a student of my profession early on and came to understand the reasoning for the specific documentation requests from underwriting. In today’s mortgage world, effective communication as to why a document is requested is almost as important to the client as the requested document itself,” he added
Describe CTC Lending LLC’s capabilities For more information, please contact Brad Benson (NMLS # 373382) at CTC Lending, LLC, an affiliate of PNC Bank, N.A. 941-924-2021 www.ctclending.com/bradbenson
CTC Lending LLC specializes in residential mortgage lending for the purchase or refinance of primary residences, second homes, and investment properties. The scope of the product offerings include: Conventional financing options, FHA, VA, Rural Development, Homepath products and Portfolio jumbo loans. With each borrower, CTC Lending LLC’s mortgage loan officers, combining more than 40 years of lending experience, are able to evaluate the goals of the clients and provide varying loan options that fit the needs of that client.
34 | playgolfsarasota.com
In addition to offering conforming loan programs above (for loans under $417,000), having the backing and support of a national lender such as PNC Bank N.A., allows CTC Lending LLC to offer one of some of the most competitive jumbo loan programs for loans that exceed $417,000 up to $2 million or more. One of the most integral services that CTC Lending LLC provides to their realtor partners and borrowers is offering pre-approval services free of charge. A pre-approval letter is often a prerequisite to allow a borrower or potential buyer to see property with a realtor and to submit any potential offers to sellers. The importance of pre-approval letter is to let the sellers and real agents know that the buyer is serious about moving forward and they have taken the proper steps to see for what mortgage amount or mortgage payment they qualify. CTC Lending LLC offers these pre-approval services to their clients through their three mortgage loan officers- Brad Benson, Ian Mackinnon and Lance Wycoff.
Today’s Mortgage Process Certainly today’s mortgage process has changed from years past and has taken the mantra of sustainable and responsible lending. The industry has required mortgage loan officers and their lenders to adapt to these national guidelines and responsibilities. The mortgage process today largely involves the documentation of the key aspects of a borrower’s application, including but not limited to: credit history, income/employment history and assets being used for downpayment or closing costs. As experienced mortgage loan officers, CTC Lending LLC strives to set the proper expectations for the documentation requirements upfront. As the file moves through the underwriting process and because all borrowers and their mortgage applications do not look exactly alike, the underwriter- at their discretion- may request additional documentation to clarify any irregularities or variances.
Describe the current interest rate environment
Call Today for Your Free Pre-Approval! 866-837-8119 or 941-924-2021
In a historical context, we have not seen rates as low as they are today in several decades. With the lending rates as low as they are today and competitive pricing on homes in our local market, there are tremendous opportunities for first-time homebuyers, move up buyers as well as savvy investors. Lower rates equate to great opportunities for all qualified buyers; they allow the borrowers keep their monthly payments lower than years past or to allow them to be approved for an increased mortgage amount, thus increasing their buying power. Not knowing exactly what will happen in the future, today’s rate environment presents a compelling argument for borrowers to evaluate all the options with a licensed mortgage loan officer when buying a home- whether considering paying cash or using a mortgage.

A TESTAMENT TO UNWAVERING QUALITY
36 | playgolfsarasota.com
golf’s greatest moment of sportsmanship has inspired one of america’s most prestigious golf clubs...
Named “Best New Private Course of 2006” by Golf Digest, the course was designed in honor of the 1969 Ryder Cup where Jack Nicklaus conceded a putt to Tony Jacklin. That gesture, known as “the concession,” rendered the two teams in a tie - the first in Ryder Cup history - and became known as one of the greatest acts of sportsmanship ever. In 2004 Nicklaus and Jacklin set out to find the perfect piece of land for a championship golf course. What they found was a setting full of wildlife set away from home sites and only minutes from downtown Sarasota. Today, The Concession Golf Club boasts an award-winning 520 acre Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course designed in association with British great and fellow World Golf Hall of Fame member, Tony Jacklin. The Concession is a nature-rich design full of thought-provoking strategic challenges winding around wetlands, 150-foot pines and 200-year-old oaks with barely a home in view. And with the course’s expansive layout, golfers often feel as if they have the place to themselves. It holds the highest Slope Ratings by the USGA at 155. There are no parallel fairways. Each hole runs in a different direction to promote varying wind conditions throughout your round, a characteristic unique to only the world’s most elite courses. playgolfsarasota.com | 37
Yearning for a challenge? The Concession Golf Club doesn’t just offer spectacular views and peaceful surroundings - it offers a challenge. Recognized in 2012 by Golf Digest as one of “America’s 75 Toughest Golf Courses” – the championship tees stretch to over 7,400 yards. For those not ready for a championship test, we have five different sets of tee boxes for all levels of play. Regardless of your skill level, our course provides an enjoyable challenge.
Practice Makes Perfect Complementing the championship golf course is one of the world’s largest private practice areas where Members can hone their skills. Ranked by Golf Digest as one of the “75 Best Practice Areas in the US”, The Concession Golf Club boasts 23 acres of facilities including, a dual-ended driving range, 10,000 square-foot putting green, and 14,000 square-foot chipping green. Our practice area allows you to practice shots up to 80 yards and simulate any shot on our course. The Concession Golf Club is one of only a handful of clubs in the U.S. that feature Titleist Pro-V1 practice balls throughout the practice facilities.

SARASOTA COUNTY, FL0RIDA Sarasota County’s emergence as one of the South’s great
Boy, I could get used to this... Having lived in the Sarasota-Bradenton area now for twenty-six years, I have seen this area grow from a quaint little Gulf Coast town to a thriving city. Having spent twenty of those years in the golf (hospitality) business, not a year has gone by that I have not heard a vacationer say, “Boy, I could get used to this.” For several years I kept giving people the same answer, “we are here all year long, you should consider coming back more often”. After getting to know more about the Economic Development Corporation of Sarasota County, my response to that commonly heard statement has changed significantly and often ends up raising the eyebrows of the person listening. This piece is intended to provide you a snapshot of what this once quaint little town now has to offer.

communities accelerated at the turn of the 21st century. Long recognized as a charming tourist town with world-class arts and culture, Sarasota County today is on the national map as a great place to live and work. Sarasota County anchors the middle of Florida’s south western coast, 60 miles south of Tampa Bay. Blessed with inspiring natural beauty and an appealing climate, this coastal paradise is one of the Southeast’s most dynamic business centers. Sarasota County has many of the attributes necessary for success in the global economy: superior schools, significant research and education facilities, high educational attainment and a regional workforce of more than 350,000. A modern infrastructure and moderate taxes contribute to the low cost of doing business here. What’s more, the community is increasingly recognized as a leader in innovative environmental management and sustainable living.
A Rising Star Among America’s Great Metros The Sarasota area has increasingly pinged the radar screens of American society’s forward observers. Sarasota and Bradenton were ranked among the Top 100 places to live in the U.S. by Relocate-America.com.

Saturday ~ January 26, 2013 Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club and The Lake Club
The Taylor Emmons Scholarship Fund was created in the wake of 19 year old Taylor Emmons untimely death on December 5, 2010 while attending the University of Miami. In lieu of flowers or other tokens of sympathy, the family established the Taylor Emmons Scholarship Fund for the students at The Out-of-Door Academy, Taylor’s High School. After receiving over $150,000 in donations the Emmons family knew they needed to continue to raise money for the scholarship fund and honor the Legacy of this exceptional young man. One of the ways to raise funds for this cause is an annual golf and poker tournament, two of Taylor’s favorite past times. This past January 28, 2012 we held our first tournament. The golf tournament was expanded to two courses to accommodate all the golfers. We had numerous poker players playing in the Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament. The winner of our poker tournament took home the grand prize of $5,000 and the Champion Texas Hold ‘Em bracelet. Both events are extremely fun to attend, fun to play in and it’s a great cause. 8374 Market Street, Suite 246 • Lakewood Ranch, FL 34202 • 941-915-9249 • Temmons.org

Sure, everyone from Seattle to Kennebunkport knows Tampa. They’ve heard about the beaches of Florida’s Gulf Coast. They probably even have an idea in their heads about the Everglades. But, what most don’t know, is that dotting the beaches south of Tampa and a tad northwest of the Everglades are three distinct downtowns with something for everyone. Lets take a jaunt southward down the coast and explore three of the downtowns that entice even the most devout beach bum to take a day away from the sand.
BRADENTON The terminal banks of the mighty Manatee River, where it spills into the Gulf, interestingly enough were first navigated by prolific Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto on his fruitless search for the mythical city of El Dorado in 1539. Centuries later, the area was incorporated as “Bradentown,” named for Dr. Joseph Braden, who often offered up his homestead for settlers and travelers; the city adopted its current name in 1943. Considering all that the area has to offer, especially the concentration of activities in and around the city’s downtown, it’s no surprise the city’s population has grown to 55,000 and is a popular winter retreat for northerners. As with much of the Suncoast, the arts are an important part of the community. The variety and accessibility have attracted day trippers, snowbirds and residents alike. Readers of American Style Magazine voted Bradenton no. 2 best small city for the arts (we’ll get to no. 1 a little later). The heart and soul of this achievement is in the southern part of

downtown, known as the Village of the Arts (VOTA). Bradenton’s Downtown Development Agency zoned the 42-acre area for artistic use in 1999. Today, VOTA is Florida’s largest art community, even larger than Sarasota’s famed Towles Court. According to VillageOfTheArts.com, there are roughly 30 galleries/studios, two bookstores, three cafes and several arts-related retail businesses. Adding to the charm inherent in artist communities, all businesses in the VOTA are located in refurbished residential properties, many constructed in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Downtown is also home to another institution of artistic achievement, the renowned Manatee Players. Among its upcoming offerings, the national and regional-award winning theatrical group will perform Anything Goes (Jan. 17 – Feb 3), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Feb. 21 – March 10), and Miss Saigon (Mar. 28 – Apr. 14). Be sure to check out the Players at their riverfront theater in the heart of downtown. Head down a little early and you can also visit the Parker Manatee Aquarium, home to “Snooty.” Born in 1948 at the Miami Aquarium, the 1200 pound manatee is believed to be the oldest living in the world. The beloved sea cow serves as the county’s mascot. 48 | playgolfsarasota.com

In the same complex, you’ll find the Bishop Planetarium, boasting one of the most advanced projection systems in the world and South Florida Museum home to some of the most significant archeological findings in Florida’s rich history. Bradenton and its people truly embrace its riverfront. There are special events nearly every weekend of the year every thing from beer festivals to musical performances. And, whether you’re here for a couple weeks or year around, you’ll want to be sure to soak it all in. This fall’s addition of a boardwalk with a fishing pier and boat slips are sure to only add to the experience. Don’t miss downtown Bradenton!
SAR AS OTA Bordering Bradenton to the south is Sarasota. The city is most famous for its Siesta Beach, recently ranked the no. 1 beach in the country by Dr. Beach. But take a quick ride across the Intracoastal and into downtown and you’ll find another no. 1. That’s right, Sarasota one upped Bradenton in the small arts town ranking. The renowned Ringling College of Art & Design acts as a driver for a city of 50,000 that has the artistic offerings of cities with hundreds of thousands more residents. Theaters, galleries, and street performances await around every street corner. A world-class opera (Sarasota Opera) and ballet (Sarasota Ballet), arts museum (Ringling Museum of Art) and performance halls (Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall and Asolo Reparatory) make this gulf-side bastion one of a kind. Sarasota’s answer to Bradenton’s riverfront is its bay shore. An activities trail that weaves through beautiful Bayfront Park and eventually over the Ringling Bridge offer unmatched tropical views of barrier islands, Big Pass opening into the Gulf and worldfamous sunsets. A short stroll off the bay, past the spot where the Scots who first discovered the area landed, is the ever-bustling Main Street. Nestled between high rise condos and office buildings are locally-owned boutiques, artist-owned galleries, and restaurants operated by chefs who have garnered national acclaim. Main Street is exciting enough on its own, but premier events fill the calendar. The Sarasota Film Festival in the spring and the up and coming Movieville International Film Festival bring Hollywood’s elite to the Gulf coast and give locals and visitors good reason to break out the gowns and black ties.
Providing World-Class Home Health Care for All Ages
The Ringling International Arts Festival attracts artists and exhibits of international renown. Every year, the Sarasota Chalk Festival, the first of its kind in the country, turns the streets of the downtown neighborhood Burn Square into a workspace for some of the worlds best chalk artists.

And, if you can handle the heat, get out and enjoy the entire week of 4th of July. It’s the best of the year in this author’s humble opinion. A spectacular fireworks display shares top billing with the offshore boat races, an event that needs to be seen to be believed. The Saturday farmers market, seemingly ongoing arts and craft shows, street performances, massive motorcycle rallies, among all kinds of other events close the streets making the already pedestrian-friendly downtown core even better suited for enjoying the streetscape and breathing in the tropical air.

V EN IC E Last but not least, lets visit the smallest of our three cities. A small citrus operation brought the first settlers around the turn of the 20th century. Years later, growth was eventually fueled by boat building and fishing industries. The city design began to take shape in the 1920’s and has paved the way for a distinct downtown core. Like its northern neighbors, Sarasota and Bradenton, the city center is tied to water, this time the Gulf. Just a short jaunt from

e t o the Grea v i r D e n i L test It’s A For 43 years, the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall has presided over the Sarasota bay front. The now iconic, and very purple, crown jewel of the Sarasota arts community is the only major presenting theater in one of the most notable small arts destinations in the country. The Van Wezel building itself is a historic Sarasota landmark. Designed by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation’s legendary Taliesin Associated Architects, the structure is famous for its unique purple hues and seashell shape which were suggested by Wright’s widow, Olgivanna Wright. Mrs. Wright was inspired by two shells she found on a beach by the Sea of Japan which are displayed in the Main Lobby, to this day. The 1,741 seat Hall was recently ranked the #1 performing arts venue in North America in the 2,000 seat (or less) category in the “top stops” section of Venues Today (July 2012 Issue). The rankings are based on concert and event grosses from October 16, 2011 to May 15, 2012. Twenty performing arts venues were listed in the 2,000 seat category. Van Wezel Executive Director, Mary Bensel notes it has been an “exciting ride” at the helm of the city’s “Purple Cow”, since her arrival in December of 2007. Again this season, the Hall will NOT require a City subsidy and will post a surplus to its fund balance. Ticket sales for last year’s season went to $6,200,000, up from the previous year’s $5,500,000 (round numbers). The Van Wezel thrives by providing comprehensive programming and effectively marketing that programming to the populations of Sarasota and Manatee Counties, while also reaching the greater Suncoast area, as well as national and international tourists and visitors. The Greatest Gesture in Golf Honored Forever On the final hole of the 1969 Ryder Cup, Jack Nicklaus stunned the golf world by conceding a twofoot putt to Tony Jacklin, resulting in the first tie in Cup history. That gesture forever became known as “The Concession.” Following that day, Jack Nicklaus & Tony Jacklin forged a lasting friendship that was the inspiration for one of America’s premier residential golf club communities. In all, only 236 homesites ranging in size from one-half to over an acre, are positioned over 700 acres of towering pines, sprawling oaks, and natural wetlands.

A Golf Course as Beautiful as the Moment it Celebrates Adjacent to the Residences, spanning over 500 acres, The Concession Golf Course presents players of all levels unique challenges on every one of its 18 holes. Designed in association with Tony Jacklin, this Jack Nicklaus Signature course brings to life the natural beauty of “Old Florida. Native stands of oak, magnolia, and pine trees blend seamlessly with the undulating course contours and water features, resulting in breathtaking vistas at every turn. There are no interior roads or homes within the core Golf Course to spoil the golfer’s view or concentration. This award winning, highly ranked private golf club provides tournament quality course conditions throughout the year.

A Clubhouse Worthy of the Cup Every amenity found in the world’s most privileged golf clubs is available at The Concession. Paying homage to the traditional values and history of golf, the clubhouse showcases memorabilia, and actual photography from the 1969 Ryder Cup from which The Concession derives its character.

I
n April, 2008, during lunch with my friend, Dan Callaghan, I asked him how Janey was doing. About four months earlier, Dan’s and Betty’s youngest daughter had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She had undergone a partial mastectomy and was in the middle of both chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Dan said that Janey seemed to be doing as well as could be expected. “But,” he said, “we just got more bad news. Daughter, Patty was diagnosed with the same horrible thing.” I expressed shock and remarked that it just was not fair that one family could be devastated by two life-threatening cancer diagnoses in a fourmonth period. I asked how Betty was holding up. Dan said, “Why don’t you ask her? I’m sure she would like to hear from you.” Betty explained to Rebecca and me that this was not the first time their family had been dealt this hand. Just over two years earlier, her sister, Margie, had fought this same, dreaded disease. After, surgery, chemo and radiation, she had beaten it and was again leading a normal, active, healthy life. Betty expressed complete confidence that Janey and Patty would beat it as well. She said: “We have a lot of family support, strength and love. We also share a deep faith. I wish that this had not happened, but I know that we can handle it.” As a result of Margie’s breast cancer ordeal, the Callaghan Tire Charity Pro-Am was founded in 2006. Dan and Betty associated with the national cancer research support organization, Golfers Against Cancer (“GAC”), and, beginning day one, all tournament profits have supported this activity. (Recently, the Callaghans began channeling all of the GAC tournament net revenues to the renowned Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa.) Margie joined the tournament committee as did several other of Dan’s and Betty’s family members and friends. These included Janey and Patty, both of whom would be fighting the same cancer demon in less than two years. Staged in November, 2006, the initial tournament was quite modest. Dan and Betty hosted most of the social events at their Bradenton home. Betty and her sisters and daughters did the cooking, and Dan and the sons-in-law served and tended bar. However, everyone loved the casual warmth, charm, laughs and delight90 | playgolfsarasota.com

ful stories about the “good old days”. The pros and amateurs alike had great fun, and almost everyone urged Dan and Betty to make it an annual event. And, so they did. The word got around, and the event grew. Traditional dates were set. The first day of the actual tournament is always the first Friday in November, with the Thursday before being the practice round. (The 2013 event will be October 31 & November 1 and 2; the following year will be November 6, 7 and 8, 2014.) This husband and wife team, both hailing from Chicago, migrated to Florida and founded Callaghan Tire, Inc. thirty-five years ago. The company rapidly expanded. The family likes to joke that their parents made the ideal business combination. Dan provided the B.S. (aka ‘sales’) and Betty handled the facts (aka ‘money’). Selling top brands of tires for trucks and cars, including Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental, General, Firestone and Yokohama, the company became one of Florida’s leading value-added dealers. Headquartered in Bradenton, it has eleven branches, ranging from Miami and Ft. Myers in the south to Ocala and Jacksonville in the north. Further, it owns and operates two retread plants, one on either side of the state. It also is developing a state-of-art auto and light truck discount, retail center in Lakewood Ranch that will open early next year. The Callaghans consider the company a part of their extended family, and they have provided compassion and employee benefits accordingly. Apparently, most of its managers and key employees feel similar loyalties. In 2008, when the chemo robbed Janey of her hair, all of management and most key employees had their heads shaved to express their concern and support. In doing so, they raised money by betting their friends they would do it, and then they donated all winnings to GAC. The tournament features a fun format with fivesomes, each playing together as a team. Each team has one pro and four amateurs, and the score is the combined two best balls per hole. Pros play scratch, and amateurs play net with maximum 18 handicaps. Thursday is the practice round when most players may play either course he or she chooses. Friday and Saturday is the tournament with 8:30AM shotgun starts both days. Each player will play one of these days at the Ritz-Carlton and the other at Concession, with half of the field playing each course each day. The four amateurs will stay together as a team both days, but they will draw for a different pro each day. The superb dining and social events include cocktails and hors d’oeuvres Thursday and Friday evenings, breakfasts Friday and Saturday, lunch Friday and an awards cocktail party and steak cookout at 2:00PM on Saturday. If you have visited Dan’s home and shop, you know that he likes to collect things. These include old cars, antique golf equipment and photographs and painting of old, famous gold courses. He also collects interesting people. Over the years, Dan became acquainted with and has maintained contact with many of the touring professionals who made up some of the 92 | playgolfsarasota.com
PGA and Seniors (now, “Champions”) fields during the past half century. He occasionally asked them if they would play if he ever held a pro-am, and most of them said they would. Dan always dreamed of organizing a pro-am tournament and inviting them, along with his amateur pals from The Concession, Bradenton CC, the Ritz-Carlton, River Wilderness and the Founders Club. Betty’s determination in 2006 to raise money for cancer research provided Dan the green light. (Two years later, when Janey and Patty were fighting this awful disease, Dan became equally passionate about their cancer research fund-raising efforts.) He was not naïve about the pros. From experience, he knew that many celebrity athletes often forgot their promises, but he hoped a few of them would surprise him and show up. And, so they did. Most invitees accepted, and those who were able have come back every year. (An early favorite among all of the tournament participants, U.S. Open winner, Orville Moody, tragically passed away, ironically from cancer.) I have asked many of the pros why they play in this event every year, and their answers have all been something similar to: “I like and admire Dan and Betty, it supports a good cause and it is great fun. I wouldn’t miss it.” This year’s tournament will be bigger and better than ever. Because of its soaring popularity and large field, it will be co-hosted by the two top golf clubs in this part of the state, the Ritz-Carlton and The Concession. It will occupy all of their combined 36 superb holes all three days. These two clubs will also provide all of the gourmet food and beverages, except

the Friday evening “Tall Tales Party”, which will be hosted by Bradenton Country Club in its charming, old clubhouse. There will be 144 amateur players and 36 pros. Among the pros will be two members of the Golf Hall of Fame, Tony Jacklin and Hollis Stacey, both of whom have won multiple USGA, LPGA or R&A majors. (Jacklin was also a four-time Ryder Cup Captain.) The highly popular Dow Finsterwald, a PGA major winner and Ryder Cup Captain, will be playing. So will former U.S. Open Champion, Lou Graham and PGA title holder, Bobby Nichols. Playing also will be winners of Champions Tour majors Larry Ziegler, Larry Laoretti and Allen Doyle. 1990 PGA Player of the Year, Wayne Levi, will also be among the Callaghan pros. Other popular notables include Jim Albus, Andy Bean, Jim Dent, Gibby Gilbert, Robert Gamez, Dana Quigley, Tom Shaw, Jerry Heard, Lonnie Nielson, Phil Parkin, Brett Quigley, Bobby Cole, Jim Woodward and teaching great, Jim McClean. The two fine host courses complement each other perfectly for a memorable tournament. Playing the Ritz on Friday and The Concession on Saturday (or vice versa) will be delightful but dramatically different golf experiences. This is just one more reason that the 2012 event will be better than ever. The Ritz, a Tom Fazio design, is an excellent course that has fast greens and is always in superb condition. Its natural beauty was further enhanced by a multi-million dollar landscaping program that resulted in thousand of flowering trees, shrubs and plantings. Its wide fairways and forgiving rough provides for a faster pace of play, few lost balls and lower scores. One visiting

professional described the Ritz as a “beautiful, challenging, fun golf experience that doesn’t beat your brains out”. Designed by Jack Nicklaus in association with Tony Jacklin, The Concession is superb in every aspect. Golf Digest named it the best new private course in America for 2006 and the fourth best course in Florida in 2011. It is equally well groomed and conditioned, but it offers considerably more resistance to low scores. Over the past ten years, Nicklaus designs have become famous (or notorious?) for severely undulating greens, and The Concession is no exception. Andy Bean described the course as: “Tough, but fair. But if you took those greens down to a 13 (Stemp), you couldn’t play it.” Jim (Woody) Woodward said: “It is downright beautiful, and I could play it every day. It is a difficult track, but the more you know it, the better you play it.” PGA Champion and 2008 Ryder Cup Captain, Paul Azinger, as well as U.S. Open winner Michael Campbell, both rate The Concession among their five favorite golf courses IN THE WORLD. You probably are curious as to how this event can offer all of this top-of-line value for only $1,500 per player and still generate a significant profit for Moffitt’s cancer research. The highly enjoyable features include three rounds of golf on two of Florida’s best courses, splendid food and drink, three fun parties, a number of other amenities, a few nice surprises and playing with (and socializing with) famous professionals who are charming, fun, warm and nice people. (Dan has been very careful and selective with his invitation list.) The reason is that this event has attracted enormous financial support from Sarasota and Manatee County businesses and individuals. For this worthwhile event, both the Ritz and The Concession deeply discounted the many things that they are providing. All workers that you will see are unpaid volunteers. There are numerous corporate and individual cash donations via Tee, Hole and Event sponsorships as well as playing gifts. The pros stepped up to the plate as well and greatly reduced their usual appearance fees. If you are playing in the 2012 Callaghan Tire Charity Pro-Am, you will get to spend some time with many interesting people who you once enjoyed watching on TV. You will also get to enjoy the company of Dan and Betty, the tournament’s founders. As an added bonus, you will observe the beautiful, radiant smiles of Margie, Janey and Patty, who are now healthy and cancer free. by: Bill Tompkins, August 2012
Editor’s notes: Bill Tompkins is retired, and he has been a tournament committee member and sponsor for five years. He also is or has been a member of both of this year’s host clubs. He and his wife, Rebecca, live primarily in Sarasota. Because of the expanded field this year, there are still several openings for amateur players. If the reader is interested in playing, he or she should phone the Ritz at (941) 309-2900, The Concession at (941) 322-1465 or Dan Callaghan at (941) 650-1701.

Plantation Community Foundation … “Making a Difference” in South Sarasota County. Back in 1988, Plantation Golf & Country Club, and its surrounding neighborhoods, was a fledgling community sending its early calls for retiree migration from colder climates. Among those who answered the call and became friends when their paths crossed here was a small group who felt so privileged to be living or wintering in Florida that they also felt obliged to find a way to show their appreciation to

A good physical therapy evaluation always begins with a full postural assessment. An individual’s positional alignment from all angles can yield valuable clues regarding potential muscle imbalances and functional limitations. A proper Golf Fitness Screen starts by analyzing the golfer’s address position. An excessive arch in the lower back (Figure A) can be an indication of weak abdominals and tight hip flexors and can make it

challenging to maintain proper posture throughout the golf swing. A more rounded spine angle (Figure B) often indicates a lack of extension and rotational mobility. Basic exercises (shown below) which address these postural faults can yield an immediate improvement in back pain and swing mechanics.

It is important to point out that the postural assessment is only the first step, and to get a true sense of a golfer’s physical limitations, movement screens must be performed. The golf screen goes on to look at mobility and stability throughout the pelvis, torso, hips and shoulders. In order to generate torque and power, you must have adequate rotational mobility, but you must also demonstrate the ability to stabilize each individual segment. This allows you to fire muscles in the correct sequence and more effectively builds momentum leading up to impact with the ball. Stability is also critical for consistency. Stability comes primarily from core strength in the abdominals and lower back and hip

musculature and is paramount, but often deficient. Identifying and addressing these
strength and flexibility deficiencies can prevent injuries, make your swing more efficient, and allow you to continue golfing well into your “later years”. Once you have a specific exercise program to address your physical limitations, your pro will have a much easier job correcting your swing faults. The Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) has been leading the way in golf fitness and rehabilitation for many years. They have developed a detailed Golf Fitness Screen which looks at balance, flexibility and strength (stability) from head to toe. This type of “Functional Movement Screen” is gaining popularity in the professional ranks in all sports and yields more useful information than traditional static tests of strength and flexibility. TPI has been fine tuning their functional screen for a number of years and applying it to golfers at all levels, from amateurs to tour players, with great success. TPI certifies golf professionals, medical professionals and strength and conditioning specialists to promote a team approach to addressing physical limitations and swing faults in one comprehensive system. After identifying these impairments, TPI golf and fitness professionals can collaborate with medical professionals, such as a physical therapist, to properly address limitations through manual techniques and therapeutic exercise. TPI’s Philosophy of the Swing – “We don’t believe there is one way to swing a club; we believe there are an infinite number of ways to swing a club. But we do believe that there is one efficient way for everyone to swing and it is based on what they can physically do.” With age, pain, or injury, posture can change and we can lose spinal mobility. We could all benefit from the exercises below which address spinal mobility related to posture. This is a great starting point for a golf-related exercise program. Once you have mastered these, you can progress to more advanced exercises focusing on core stabilization, strength and rotational mobility.
For improved posture and spinal extension, lie on a foam roller or therapy ball for 3-5 minutes/day with arms outstretched. “Cat/Camel” – to improve spine/ pelvic mobility. While on your hands and knees, practice “arching and rounding” your back.
Also practice “arching and rounding” your lower spine while standing in your address position.

Golf is a fantastic game that challenges the mind and body. As we age, maintaining our health in order to play the game we love can be a challenge. Golf provides great exercise but can place considerable demands on a player’s knees. Many golfers worry about their ability to compete and play frequently without suffering joint pain. Knee arthritis becomes very common after the age of forty-five. In fact, 12.5% of men and women experience pain from knee arthritis before the age of fifty. By the age of eighty-five, 50% of people have symptomatic knee arthritis. Active golfers may find that they discover symptoms of knee arthritis sooner than less active peers. This is because golf can exacerbate the symptoms of knee arthritis due to the increased forces placed on the knee through repetitive swings and constant walking. Knee arthritis causes an achy, dull, constant pain, felt predominately along the inside of the knee. This is worsened by weight-bearing activities, such as jogging or even extensive walking. It often becomes a problem at night and might even disrupt sleep. With time, the knee will become stiff and may develop episodes of swelling. As arthritis becomes more severe, a person may limp and even notice difficulty getting out of a chair. It is imperative to consider how to curb the development of knee arthritis and its symptoms. Some people are genetically predisposed to develop arthritis, but even they can use techniques to limit the impact of arthritis on their daily lives and activities such as golf. Weight loss and daily strengthening exercises play an important role. Stronger muscles around the knee diminish the stress experienced by the knee joint. Daily strengthening of the quadriceps is particularly helpful. A program that includes quad sets, leg presses and carefully performed squats can be very effective. A Physical Therapist can devise and monitor the proper technique to maximize results. Choosing lower-impact activities can also limit the impact of knee pain
from arthritis. Naturally, if walking the course leads to disabling knee pain, then a golfer may choose to use a cart. Similarly, consider swimming to strengthen and protect the knees on days when you aren’t playing golf. What if you are already experiencing symptoms of knee arthritis? There are several options that can help to keep you on the golf course. First, consider easy adjustments such as strengthening your legs, using a neoprene knee brace, using a cart and/or adopting a less aggressive swing. If these measures do not improve your symptoms, some medications may help. Glucosamine chondroitin sulfate products may improve your pain, and anti-inflammatory medications can also play an important role. Antiinflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen help reduce the swelling and inflammation associated with knee arthritis. This leads to less pain. One must be careful with these medications, however, and it is always important to ask your doctor if these medications are specifically safe for you. If the above measures are ineffective you may need to consult an orthopedic surgeon about additional non-operative measures. These options may include formal physical therapy programs specific to your needs, prescription strength anti-inflammatory medications, and knee joint injections.. If all else fails and a player’s knee x-ray displays severe arthritis, a partial or total knee placement may be necessary. A knee replacement can be very effective in eliminating pain and limitation of knee arthritis. The good news is that after a successful knee replacement, a player can expect to return to golf in as few as three months. It is important to stay active and enjoy golf. Hopefully, with a careful approach to the prevention and treatment of knee arthritis, your game can continue comfortably into the future.
There are many upper extremity conditions that can have an impact on one’s ability to play and enjoy the game of golf. Golfer’s elbow, or medial epicondylitis, while it bears the sports’ name, occurs in many people who do not play golf. Its prevalence in the general population is quite low, at less than 1%, with smoking, obesity, forceful and repetitive activities being significant risk factors for developing the problem. The condition, more specifically, is a tendonosis of the tendons that attach to the inside of the arm, just above the elbow joint. A tendonitis is characterized by swelling of the tendons, while tendonosis is a term which denotes an abnormality of the tendon. It often presents with pain on the medial aspect (or inside) of the elbow which is activity related, especially to repetitive or forceful motions, like, for example, swinging a golf club. Although the condition is not very common in the overall population, it is more than twice as common in people who perform these aforementioned activities for work, or for a daily hobby, in which the wrist is being repetitively pronated (palm rotating down) and/or flexed. It has a peak incidence in individuals in their third through fifth decade and occurs twice as commonly in men than in women. It occurs in the dominant elbow 60% of the time and 70% of the time is associated with a gradual onset rather than an acute injury. In half of the people that have the condition, there is an associated “ulnar neuropathy” or abnormality to the nerve that travels down the arm and behind the medial side of the elbow. Ulnar neuropathy can cause numbness, tingling or discomfort to the small and ring fingers of the affected extremity. With more serious ulnar neuropathy, there can be associated weakness or muscle wasting in the hand, but this usually occurs in more extreme situations. Tenderness to the inside of the elbow is present in almost all cases but not all pain on the medial side of the elbow is medial epicondylitis, so a thorough examination by your orthopedic surgeon is recommended to help make the diagnosis. Neck, shoulder and upper arm conditions may also cause medial sided elbow pain and should be differentiated from golfer’s elbow so that proper treatment can be initiated. X-rays are usually normal and are typically not helpful in making the diagnosis. Treatment of golfer’s elbow should include patient education, medications, orthoses (counter-force braces), therapy and time. After the patient has been educated as to what the inciting activities are, he or she is instructed to avoid those activities or modify them. Oral anti-inflammatory medications are recommended if the patient can tolerate them. A steroid injection into the area can help but should not be seen as a replacement for a more complete approach to the problem. Once discomfort in the area has subsided for a few weeks, a conditioning program of stretching and strengthening can be started. Provocative activities are avoided until pain-free, pre-injury strength has been restored. Platelet rich plasma or blood injections can be used when conservative measures fail. Modalities like acupuncture, laser, iontophoresis and ultrasound have no proven independent efficacy. Non-operative treatment only fails in about 5-10% of patients. Surgical results depend on the symptoms involved but have 95% good to excellent results but can sometimes take up to 6 months to attain.

In addition to cataract and LASIK surgery, Dr. McCabe performs clear lens replacement (CLR) for patients wanting to be more independent of glasses. She also provides laser treatments for eye conditions such as glaucoma and posterior capsular opacification. Relocating to Sarasota was an easy decision for Dr. McCabe. She and her husband, Dave, both earned undergraduate degrees in marine biology in Florida. They longed to raise their family in a seaside community. “Sarasota’s strong medical community and the strengths, history and reputation of The Eye Associates were compelling,” she said. “This is a beautiful area that appeals to the marine biologist in both of us, and it is a wonderful place to raise a family.” The McCabes have five children and two grandchildren. They bring an impressive history of community and global service to Sarasota. Dr. McCabe and her family have participated in multiple mission trips, providing sight-saving eye surgery to residents of South and Central America and island nations. Locally, Dr. McCabe and The Eye Associates actively participate in Southeastern Guide Dogs®, an organization dedicated to training and providing service dogs to the visually impaired. While exciting advances in surgical procedures have revolutionized cataract and lens replacement surgery, it is the surgeon’s experience and skills that guarantee an excellent result. Dr. McCabe exemplifies these criteria and exceeds industry standards. Her goal is to listen and thoroughly assess the
needs of each patient and provide unsurpassed treatment.
ABOUT CLEAR LENS REPLACEMENT SURGERY (CLR) CLR is a surgical procedure designed to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. Unlike procedures such as LASIK that change the shape of the cornea, CLR corrects vision by removing the natural lens in the eye and replacing it with an artificial lens. This is much like what happens in cataract surgery. While not everyone is a candidate for this procedure, Dr. McCabe offers complimentary screenings to help you know the options for your eyes.
ABOUT THE EYE ASSOCIATES For more than 30 years The Eye Associates has served the Sarasota, Manatee and the Sun City area, providing local families with access to the latest technology, cutting-edge equipment, and the most highly skilled eye physicians. Founded in 1980 by Harris Silverman, MD, they provide high quality routine, medical, surgical, and optical eyecare.. Sixteen award-winning physicians cover the specialties of Cataracts, Cornea, Glaucoma, Retina, LASIK and Laser Surgery. Eyelid surgery and related cosmetic services are also offered as well as Dermatology and Hearing services. Board Certified Optometrists provide primary eyecare, eyeglasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses. The Optical Gallery dispenses a wide variety of beautiful frames with the most technologically advanced Zeiss eyeglass lenses, fitted by our highly qualified Licensed and Board Certified optical staff.
Through the EYES of a PGA Professional... How the CLR surgery has changed one golfer’s “outlook” on life. Q. How long have you worn glasses and contact lenses? A. I started wearing glasses at the age of 10. When I entered the 9th grade, I got my first pair of contact lenses because I played hockey. When playing sports, glasses were always a problem. Contact lenses changed my life at that point, but after 25+ years of wearing contacts, my eyes just felt so tired of them. Q. W hat made you want to have Clear Lens Replacement (CLR)? A. I have a lot of friends and colleagues who have had LASIK surgery in the past and as they reached their 40’s, they slowly lost their ability to read and see small print. Dr. McCabe explained that with this new CLR technology that would never happen to me. I was simply floored and needed to learn more. Dr. McCabe helped me learn about the procedure and its benefits. Q. W hy did you choose Dr. Cathleen McCabe to do your surgery? A. B ecause of her reputation and experience, plain and simple. It was an easy decision for me. Q. W hat was the CLR surgery process like? A. T he whole process was easy and pain free. I was in and out in less than 2 hours and I was even able to carry on with my daily routine with very little restrictions on the very same day. It was absolutely amazing! Q. I hear that your wife and daughters were able to watch the actual surgery? A. Y es, my 2 daughters and my wife Kristen were able to watch my surgery as it happened LIVE on a TV screen. They were simply amazed watching the procedure. It was great having them there with me also. They are very happy for me, and I cannot thank Dr. McCabe enough.
Q. How is your vision after CLR? A. 20/20! Like I said already, absolutely amazing! I am able to wake up in the morning and look over at the alarm clock and actually see it. I go through my day like everything is normal, then at times I stop and think to myself, there is nothing in my eye. I can see and I don’t have to do a thing about it. It’s great. It’s funny at night time…. I have to stop myself from trying to take my contact lenses out when preparing for bed. After I realize that I don’t have to do anything, I just smile and thank the good Lord for this procedure. It has been life altering, to say the least. Q. How has CLR changed your life? A. I believe confidence is everything in life, and this surgery has given me more confidence in everything I do. It’s hard to explain, but I just feel like a burden has been lifted and it feels great. My golf game has even improved. As a PGA Professional, I like to compete against my peers, and this has given me more confidence in my skill set to do just that. I had surgery on Monday, July 16th and on Friday, July 20th, we had a team event against all the other PGA Club Professionals in town. My partner, Mark Bruce and I, took second place, shooting 68 at the Lakewood Ranch Country Club on the Kings Dunes Course. We had bogies on the last 2 holes, to lose the event by 1 shot, but it was just great being out there playing without contact lenses. I felt on top of the world. Q. Now that you are glasses-free, how has it affected your sports activities or your golf game? A. Like I said, just the fact that I do not have to think about contact lenses or glasses, I feel more confident about everything I do, especially golf!
“Dr. McCabe has performed more than 28,000 cataract surgeries and 17,000 LASIK procedures so she was the perfect choice for my CLR.” Tony Panico, PGA, Vision Before CLR 20/400 – AFTER CLR 20/20

LOWER YOUR SCORE WITH A STRONG CORE adding yardage off the tee. Well, what if you could hit the ball further and straighter simply by being in better physical shape?
The feeling of a great drive as the club strikes the ball and sends it rocketing down the ball jumps off the middle of the fairway-- it’s one of the best parts about playing golf. If only it would happen more often! To see the green envy in your opponents’ eyes when your ball blasts by theirs, hole after hole. Unfortunately the average golfer doesn’t have adequate core stabilization to produce a perfect swing every time for 18 holes.
In order to hit the sweet spot every time, developing the strength parameters of the core is important. The core is an anatomical region of the body that is responsible for stabilization during any movement. It can generally be defined as the part of your body between the hips and chest. It in encompasses many muscles groups on the front, side, and backside of the body. In general the core consists of the muscles that make up your; abdominals, lower back, obliques, and hips. Exercises that use each of these muscles help strengthen your core stabilization and in turn improves your golf swing.
The golf swing itself is an incredibly complex movement that combines virtually every muscle in the body into one coordinated action. One swing requires balance, coordination, flexibility, stability, strength and power. Certain body parts must remain in a stable position, while other body parts are moving simultaneously. To perform a powerful golf swing, the body must have the capacity to perform this action. Many golfers do not maintain the proper core strength needed to perform a proper golf swing every time. So they often turn to a bigger, more expensive driver for
Core strength and stability throughout the body are essential. These fitness terms refer to the body’s strength in the trunk and the ability of the muscles of the entire body to operate in a coordinated, athletic way, which provide a stable platform in the body for hitting the golf ball. The more coordinated and stable the body is, the less motion is wasted during the swing and the more energy goes straight into hitting the ball. Core strength and stability help you maintain your balance during all phases of your swing and will also help generate torque to increase club head speed and

increase driving distance. Think of the core and the engine of the body. It is the area that drives the body for most movements, including your golf swing. It is primarily responsible for the capacities of: balance, stability, and power development within the body. For these capacities to occur efficiently it is necessary to train the core for improved performances. If the core is weak and unstable the mechanics of your arms and legs will altered or compensate and cause errant shots. Compensatory movements that result from a weak and unstable core will cause other joints (shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips knees, ankles) to move in abnormal synergistic patterns and cause tendon, muscle, ligament, joint and cartilage damage (ie: strains, sprains, tendonitis and bursitis). Strengthening and training of the core will help maintain proper posture and swing mechanics which will also help decrease the risk of injury and stress on the other joints involved in golf. Every player can benefit from some exercise that is golf specific, and can participate at their desired level when the body is trained correctly. A strong stable and flexible core is just as important in everyday activities as it is in an athletic endeavor that you participate in. A physical therapist will be able to assess your strength and flexibility to determine which core muscles are weak and what muscles that may be causing you to compensate and cause postural and muscular imbalances during your swing.

The rock in question is the phreatomagmatic volcano, Boren Mountain which dominates the city of Bilina and the water is from the last ice age.
B
ILINER springs bubbles up after 15 millennia at a rate of 1,602 liters per hour, at temperatures between 63°F and 68°F. This naturally brilliant sparkling mixture from an uncontaminated source is immediately bottled, boxed and loaded to be shipped off to markets where it is available for retail.
W
e have permits from the Czech Republic to extract approximately 14 million liters per year , which is about half the capacity of France’s Perrier Vittel or Italy’s San Pellegrino. Yet the water is much more potent and effective, with significant benefits to human health and wellness. We also have a certificate from the Ministry Of Health, Department of Inspectorate/Health Spas & Mineral Springs to testify the water is from a therapeutic, healing source – although the word “Healing” may not be used in the USA unless the product contains a drug. There are no drugs or additives in BILINER, but your body will thank you!
D
iscover this precious natural resource for yourself. You have the confidence to go your own way. You know when your body and your spirit are in harmony, when you feel healthy and full of vitality.
N
o need to wait any longer! BILINER is finally here for you, distributed by fine mineral water vendors and premium retailers throughout Florida. And now, it is the water of Champions!

JUST GENTS
®
A trip to the local barbershop for a basic hair cut and an occasional shave was more than sufficient for most men until the late 1960s when trendy unisex shops limited men’s options to the local salon. Men became accustomed to sitting awkwardly next to a neighbor’s wife or his sister’s girlfriends while attending to his personal grooming needs. Until recent years, men were intimidated by the thought of using “beauty” products and would never think of stepping foot into a “day spa” unless persuaded by a spouse while on a romantic getaway. No wonder men’s spas are popping up all over the world! JustGents is downtown Sarasota’s GentEsstential BarberSpa specializing in the body, hair and skin needs of today’s professional man. Its male-exclusive environment addresses the style and grooming services men want, need and deserve. JustGents offers men the ultimate in salon and spa services including precision haircuts, clipper cuts, fades, flat tops, GQ, edging, hair coloring, therapeutic massage, hair removal, straight razor shaves, hand and foot detailing, facials and even teeth whitening and shoe shining for the busy executive. The once reluctant man has become very comfortable in his own skin especially since mainstream manufacturers have relabeled their products, giving them simple masculine names and looks. Since 2003, sales of men’s skin care products
have significantly increased and despite a tough economy, the men’s grooming industry continues to grow. In this age-conscious, competitive society, men need to look and feel their very best to stay in the game. Men now make up nearly a third of all spa-goers, according to the International Spa Association. They are not just signing up for sports massages and manicures, they are seeking a full menu of services including, anti-aging and acne facials, body scrubs, hair removal, and hair coloring. From the upscale masculine décor to the steam shower and sauna, JustGents provides a place for the harmonious rejuvenation of the male body, mind and spirit. Men can relax, sip a cup of hot coffee or enjoy a free glass of wine or cold beer while escaping from daily stress. JustGents 50” plasma TV in the barber area is a great way to catch the game and its reclining theater chairs are perfect for lounging during an express hand detail. There are also individual rooms with personal flat screen TV’s for private hand/foot detailing and hair removal. Downtown Sarasota | 126 N. Orange Ave. | 941-330-9100 | Just-Gents.com Across from City Hall between 1st St and 2nd St.
