We are so honored to be able to bring you another issue of our magazine. It is packed full of rescue/shelter information and fabulous stories that will warm your heart. Our contributors continue to grace us with their words and we cannot be more thankful. The advertisers that continue to support our efforts to get local shelter pets noticed and adopted deserve a huge thank you as well. Some of you may know that we have also published a magazine specifically about fostering pets in September of this year. If you have not had a chance to pick one up, please contact us for a list of where you can find it. The shelters/rescues that have always been featured will continue to appear in the magazine each time. We just arranged them a bit differently and tried to make it a bit easier to read. As always, if you know of a shelter or rescue that you would like to see featured in a future issue, drop us an email or call. Please consider any one of these wonderful places to adopt a dog or cat from. Every one of them does what they do from the heart. Some of these pets have had Mike & Linda Palmieri previous lives where they did not get the love that every animal deserves. Their second chance could be with you! Just like Elliot was taken by Rue and Reno and inspired to write a heartfelt letter to Santa (see page 24) we are hooked on a certain dog (see below). Like others who are surely folllowing the posts on his very own Facebook page, we want to see a wonderful family adopt Jay Z so he can live that life every shelter pet deserves. For this reason, we are making Jay Z the poster dog for this edition of the magazine, with his very own spot on page 2. After all, the shelters and rescues mentioned on these pages, and so many more we have not gotten to yet, have their own Jay Z’s. Are YOU ready to be a pet parent? Adding a pet to your family requires a15 year (on average) commitment that needs to be made from day one, but the unconditional love you will receive in return will stay in your heart for life! We hope you have also seen our placemats out in 20 restaurants in Amsterdam, Broadalbin, Gloversville, Johnstown, Caroga Lake, Mayfield, Fonda and Fort Plain. Every 6 and 8 weeks we print a different mat in order to help shelter pets get noticed! We cannot express how thankful we are to those restaurants and advertisers for continuing to help us spread the word. For some reason Jay Z has never had a potential adopter come visit him and has been waiting at the shelter in Yonkers, NY for a forever home for 21 months! That is nearly 2 years!

And there are so many homeless pets in the same situation in every shelter! This one will have you shaking your head. Such a beautiful dog! Yes, he needs a certain situation, but there HAS to be someone out there perfect for him. So PLEASE if you know of anyone who may be willing to be that first potential adopter to visit him (it’s not that far to drive!), show them this article, direct them to his Facebook page and cross your fingers that he finds what he is looking for really soon!

After you have met and decided which amazing animal you would like to adopt, we will ask that you fill out an application. Annie’s Fund

The Regional Animal Shelter would like to share with you the story of our wonderful Annie, and how Annie’s Fund came into existence. Annie was found by Animal Control in a culvert. It is not known how long she was stuck in there. She was too weak to climb out on her own and the Animal Control Officer had to climb in and carry her out. She was brought into the shelter – emaciated, open wounds, infections, hair missing, and a severe case of mastitis. She was taken to the vet, given fluids and placed on antibiotics to help with the infections. Although Annie was skin over bone and in very bad shape, she was so happy to receive love and attention from the shelter volunteers. She would kiss everyone that came in to see her! The volunteers didn’t see Annie as a sick, wounded dog but a dog full of love to give. We sat with her and played with her and gave her all the love we had. Unfortunately Annie was not responding to the antibiotics and she was not making any progress. After another trip to the vet and upon further examination, we were informed that Annie’s organs were already damaged too much and were unable to fully support her. She needed approximately six (6) surgeries but her organs were not strong enough to get her through the surgeries. There was nothing the veterinarian could do at this point other than keep her comfortable. Despite the fact that Annie was very ill, she continued to give us all kisses and wag her tail. Then one day, surrounded by volunteers who held and cuddled her, Annie crossed the Rainbow Bridge. And just before she closed her eyes, she gave one volunteer one last kiss, as if to thank us for loving her and taking such good care of her. We will never forget Annie. She touched the lives of each person that met her and taught us all that it really doesn’t matter what’s on the outside because real love is on the inside. Annie’s story hit the media and one generous and caring supporter sent a generous donation to put toward her medical care. Unfortunately, Annie had passed by the time we received the donation, but the donor insisted that we use the money toward other dogs that needed emergency medical treatment. So in honor of our brave, sweet girl who fought the battle for her life, we started Annie’s Fund. We wish to thank our donor for their generosity and the ability to get the fund started, and to the many that followed who believed in helping dogs like Annie. Please consider donating to our fund to help other dogs like Annie.

Tyson’s Story We had been featuring Tyson in our past magazines - he had been at Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter in Sprakers, NY for 3 years before being spotted by his mom and dad! We truly believe that when things are meant to be they will happen and it happened for Tyson...he got a wonderful forever home and family! Here in his Mom’s words are how they found him and fell in love...

It was just a couple weeks after we lost our Border Collie Sabrina, when I first saw Tyson’s story. It was in Facebook on Help Find Zada’s Friends. I didn’t pay too much attention to Tyson because of having recently lost my girl Sabrina. So I prayed to St. Martin that someone will see the post and rescue him.

Tyson was very well loved by his Ayres family while he waited for his forever family to ﬁnd him, but this photo says ”I’m home and I know it!”

The next time that I heard about Tyson, was on Steve Caporizzo’s Pet Connection. It was on WGNA with Sean and Bethany. The way that Steve described him, I knew that it had to be the same dog that I saw posted on Help Find Zada’s Friends. But they said that Tyson was a Pitbull; and with their reputation, I didn’t even think it was going to be us adopting one. Still, I prayed again that he will find a good home; after all, three years in a shelter is a long time. Then several weeks later, I was watching television with Johnny and there he was again. Someone had posted this handsome beautiful boy named Tyson. Only this time, they had a picture of him….OMG, he was so beautiful. I immediately showed the post to Johnny and he fell in love with him too. He said, “That’s the dog”, I like him! But then, Johnny hesitated; he looked over at me and said that I have to mourn Sabrina first, and then we will go look for another dog in the fall. Excited, all I remembered Johnny saying was, “I like him”, and everything else was soon forgotten. I immediately sent an email to Ayres Animal Memorial Shelter inquiring about Tyson. I was worried that someone else would take him.

Within a few minutes of emailing the shelter, Marissa Christman answered my email. From there, we scheduled a visit to the shelter to meet Tyson. We loved him from the minute we saw him and couldn’t wait to get him home. However, we had a vacation scheduled later that week to Maine. So Marissa said, that when we get back, she and Rich would bring Tyson to us. They wanted to do an in home visit to make sure that we had a good home for Tyson and that Tyson would be a good fit for us. Tyson had been passed around a few times before and Marissa and Rich wanted what was best for Tyson.

The day had finally come to bring Tyson into our home. We had prepped the house like we were bringing home a child. We installed a 6’ fence around a good part of the yard, bought a kiddie pool like he had at the shelter, got him a few toys and bought him the biggest dog crate we could find. But as Marissa and Rich walked Tyson around the property and down by the water, you could tell it was a bitter sweet moment for them. For they have grown to love Tyson so much over the years and now they had to give him up. We can only say thank you to Marissa and Rich for doing such a great job with Tyson and all the other dogs at the shelter. We hope they know how much they are appreciated! Sometimes rescue can be so hard, almost unbearable to see the condition that some cats are found in before they need to be saved! Marcia Scott of Happy Cat Rescue (see page 8) knows this all too well. One particular cat who was named “Maddie” came into Happy Cat in horrible condition and near death. Maddie has since been nursed back to health and was adopted into a loving forever home.

Last winter Maddie was rescued by my great friend Jana Marincic who saved her from freezing to death. When she came here we kept feeding her every 3 hours. Then she got shaved by another great friend Sherilyn Pellitteri. Her coat got shaved off in one piece! God love Sherilyn's patience. She worked on her for I believe 3 hours if not longer. Then we gave her a quick bath. That's when we noticed all the ticks embedded in her skin. We left that alone because they were all dead. Then a week later, we plucked them out of her skin. We let her get rest all wrapped up in warm blankets all the time. She was so good through all this. It was now time for her to see the vet. She got her shots and tested. Everything was great except she needed some teeth pulled. As rescue is, when we have a sick cat they have to go to the vet before teeth get pulled. From the time we were told she needed teeth pulled until late September when she did get them pulled I was bonded to her and she with me! I knew we couldn't keep her because our cats are rowdy and she is so petite and mild mannered. They would either push her away from the food or eat it all up on her. She would let them! I had to say good bye to her after being here for almost a year. That was so hard to do. I knew that's what was best for her. She is in a beautiful home where she will be loved and spoiled. Her new mommy loves her so much! Another one saved that had a rough life. We never kept her in a kennel. She went through so much hell before she got here. She certainly deserves the life she has now. I'm so happy for this sweetheart.

Have you ever had a bat in your house or a skunk in your yard and called your local dog warden, dog control or animal control officers to be told “we don’t handle that” and wonder “well, what do you handle”? I’ll tell you. Most DCO’s or ACO’s handle dogs, dog complaints, licensing issues, local laws such as dogs running at large (stray dogs) or allowing your animal to defecate on private or public property without cleaning it up. They handle Agriculture and Markets Article 7 laws. They also assist police officers with animal cruelty cases and other Agriculture and Markets Article 26 laws when requested. Nuisance wildlife such as bats, skunks or raccoons are handled by New York State certified Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator (NWCO). These are people who have gone through training and have been certified to handle wildlife. The reason for this is simple…safety. Wildlife carries a higher risk of rabies than domestic animals and therefore more training on handling and what to look for. Not to say that your local DCO’s won’t know what to watch for, as some are rabies response agents for the county department of public health, but most are not trained or vaccinated for handling rabid animals or vector species. Also a large number of town DCO’s are on call officers only and work on a dog case by case basis, whereas larger cities may have an on staff officer who works a regular shift out of a police department or city hall. Some of these officers have gone through the training to become NWCO’s and can handle these types of calls. What does this mean for you? It means that you may have to reach out to multiple locations to get assistance. Your first call should be to your local police department, especially if you feel the animal may be rabid. Most can direct you to a local NWCO in your area. If you have a problem with a family of wildlife you can visit the Department of Environmental Conservation’s website at www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7005.html and find a list of operators in your area.

A community came together to save a puppy who needed them! ...and she is doing well! Most people here in our city of Amsterdam, NY know of Princess. She was the dog found in a box on Woodrow Rd. with broken bones. She had paralysis on her back legs and veterinarians believe she was either kicked or hit in a way that caused her a broken elbow, fractured rib and fractured vertebrea. She currently lives with Gina Kline (animal control officer for Amsterdam) who is fostering her (with the help of others in the area) I asked Gina to tell me about how things are going for Princess and where she is now in the healing process - here is what she said...

Princess had surgery at Veterinary Specialties Referral Center to repair two breaks in her elbow. After a couple months of recovery she was released into physical therapy at Ballston Spa Veterinary Clinic. She was attending PT for a few months but had to stop because she had an open wound on her foot from the way she scoots along because of her back leg not being strong enough to support her. Since then we have been working at home on healing the wounds between cold laser therapy and wrapping it. She lives life as a mostly normal dog. She has a 4 legged foster brother who has taken to playing with her on his terms and time frame and She attempts to play with my foster cats but so far only one will consider participating with her. She loves to fetch and play tug and is super strong. Her upper body is all muscle. She has been spayed and vaccinated.

The Story of Rue “Rooster” foster dog to Steve and Lisa Caporizzo

How this little girl with her ﬁghting spirit inspires her foster parents every day. Written by Linda Palmieri, as told by Steve Caporizzo

When you remove a dog from the shelter environment, you get to watch a dog that may have endured pain and suﬀering blossom into a trusting, loving dog. It is amazing how quickly the transformation can be. Dogs have a grateful heart and their devotion to their “people” is surely a gift. Since last March, through Steve Caporizzo’s Pet Connection Facebook page, Steve’s Instagram and also on Google Plus and LinkedIn, we have been kept updated on a certain little foster dog named Rue, who Steve and Lisa have nicknamed “Rooster”. I had the pleasure of speaking with Steve about Rue and what fostering means to him and his wife Lisa. He has also allowed me to share these wonderful photos of Rue with all of you.

Rue was rescued by Free to be Me Rescue and then fostered by Steve Caporizzo and his wife Lisa back in March of 2017 after 5 years of neglect; she was very close to death and was 3 hours away from being euthanized. Once in the loving arms of Steve and Lisa she started on the mend mentally and physically. She got around the best she could with her injuries, was eating like crazy and taking her meds. It was soon evident that Rue was a very social little fighter! Steve says that since that date back in March when she came into their lives Rue has taught Steve and Lisa so much about the will to live and has made them better people with the way she inspires them daily!

Steve speaks about Rue, her place in their hearts and home, and what the future may hold for her... From a post put up on October 29th by Steve on Steve Caporizzo’s Pet Connection Facebook page, the story can be summed up like this...

“When you adopt or rescue, you have to look beyond the outer shell and realize there is a beautiful pet right in front of you that just needs a chance. She has many physical limitations that will never be fixed from 5 years of neglect......she has been through 2 surgeries, with more than likely at least two more. She is a fighter, her spirit is second to none in that small 10lb body. She is happy....healing....and loving. Sitting in my lap, her tail never stops. I look at those eyes, so clear now. Full of hope.....while back in March, they were so clouded and desperate looking. What a transformation she has made and we have been so proud of her.”

Rue came to Steve and Lisa as a broken little dog, so matted, so dirty, in pain, with multiple medical issues. Steve and Lisa turned to their friends and trusted doctors and staff at The Animal Hospital to get her vetted right away. It was then that her surgery was scheduled in hopes of fixing her leg. Her back right leg needed surgery on the Achilles tendon. Unfortunately when Dr. Tom Bowersox performed the surgery it was not able to be fixed. Her front right leg was found to have an old injury on her paw that could not be fixed either as it has fused back together. She walks on her right front leg by placing the weight on the area above her ankle with her paw up in the air. Her back leg has no strength. She came home with braces to help ease her discomfort but she isn’t too fond of them according to Steve. None of this deters this little fighter from getting around like the “normal dog” she thinks she is. Even with all of her physical issues she just keeps trying to be a dog like any other dog. She loves to go outside, have fun, and she enjoys interacting with Steve and Lisa’s other dogs. She follows Steve and Lisa around and loves to lick their faces. She will put her head as close to your face as she can and fall asleep on you. If she wants to be on your lap she tries to jump up on you. She is a little lover with a fighting spirit. When she goes outside she walks around the fenced in yard and interacts with the other dogs, despite her limitations. Yes, she is wobbly but it is that which Steve and Lisa find so inspiring in this girl. Her will to survive was and still is amazing! She acts like she doesn’t even know she is different. When Rue was rescued she had a horrible ear infection. Rue’s doctors tried every conventional way to cure it….with no luck. After about 3 months, they were getting VERY worried. Dr. Lexi Becker at The Animal Hospital, with the help of Cornell, came up with an aggressive treatment that would hopefully kill the infection. Every Friday for 10 weeks she went in for treatment…and finally, there were signs of improvement. Steve and Lisa and her doctors are delighted. She could have faced surgery and more than likely lost her hearing. At this time she is still in need of a dental procedure and a spay. When the time is right for Rue both will be scheduled. On October 29th Rue, Steve and Lisa attended a sort of “coming out party” for her at The Healthy Pet Center in Latham. Before this day, Steve and Lisa had kept mainly quiet about Rue, to let her heal as she needed without being in the limelight too much. Rue arrived to a line of people waiting to meet her and catch up on her journey. She came dressed as a witch and from the photos on the right you can see that this little girl is well on her way to being the best dog she can be. Whether or not she ends up staying in the Caporizzo household as a permanent member is yet to be determined. After 8 months, she has stolen their hearts by being the little love bug she is. The plan is to get her back to health and fixed up as much as is possible for her. Because of the way she walks, she is putting so much pressure on the back of her spine that there will surely be some back issues down the road. According to Steve, if he and Lisa feel there is someone out there who is able and willing to give Rue the medical care she will need for the rest of there life and create an atmosphere where she will thrive and be loved, they will consider adopting her out. They will be very careful in making this determination and if they cannot find the perfect situation for this beloved foster dog, she just may stay put. If you are considering fostering a pet perhaps you will be inspired to do so after reading this story. Steve and Lisa Caporizzo have been fostering dogs for many years now. They tend to take in the hard ones, the dogs in situations where they may not otherwise be able to find rescue, the dogs who are at their lowest point. They have fostered older dogs, many of them who come to them full of cancer, in pain and not deserving the loss of their families. They commit to taking them to their doctor appointments and give them a comfortable place to lay their heads and feel safe. I asked Steve, “Does it rip your hearts out to do this?” Of course it is hard, he said, but they feel it is something they should do because they can. Those pets essentially inspire them to live a better life - to watch these dogs go through what they do and then still be full of love and devotion is as amazing as it is inspiring. They foster with their huge hearts, willing to get them broken, only to go out and foster again and again. This is what fostering is all about!

One of the program dogs, Rufus, is doing awesome and we love watching him work with his trainer, Mark Shuart. Rufus is currently on the search for his forever home so they can learn his training alongside him. Rufus has made tremendous progress with his rehabilitation and we want to ensure his future family is committed to continuing it. Rufus loves other dogs and would do well with kids, but we would prefer a home that will keep him in a calm state without them. Rufus is 2 years old, neutered, up to date on vaccinations, house trained, crate trained, playful, sweet, and did I mention handsome?!?! Many pet people are eager to share that love with others because they want those people to understand the unconditional love and the intense bond they share with their dog or cat. Mike and I decided to feature some folks who love their pets for so many reasons. After a conversation I had this morning with someone, I realized how truly blessed I am to have a huge love for animals. Dogs in particular have brought me through some very dark times, and continue to fill my life with love and peacefulness when I need it the most. Dogs have taught me how to forgive, to truly live in the moment, to not overlook and to enjoy the simple pleasures life has to offer, to be grateful for every day, to appreciate nature and so much more. I am extremely thankful for these lessons and the unconditional love that dogs offer to us humans. I have formed friendships with some amazing people because of our common love for animals. With all the heartache that our world is going through right now, my hope is that people can be more like dogs - forgive, love unconditionally, live every day like it’s your last, and keep moving forward with hope in their hearts. I have 2 cats, Rosie (left) who is 15 years old and Lily (right) who is 13 years old. Rosie has lived with me since she was 8 weeks old. We have a special bond. In January of 2017, I lost both of my parents. It was very difficult to deal with. Rosie and Lily could sense that things had changed and stayed by my side when I needed it. These two cats are so important to me. I don’t know how I would have gotten through this without them. They have taught me many things. I am very fortunate to have them. God has blessed me by allowing Rosie and Lily to be a part of my life. They have given me so much love and companionship over the years and expect nothing in return. Some may consider our family unit unconventional, but I could not envision my home being constructed in any other fashion. Since I was a child I have always been surrounded by animals and they have provided me with unconditional love and more importantly, a sense of security and emotional support. There is no greater feeling than coming home from a stressful day, feeling like nothing has gone right in the world and then you see it - that face pressed up against the window, the wagging rush that comes at you as you open the door and the kisses that seem to wipe all of your troubles away. Having personally struggled with anxiety disorder for years, having the companionship of a dog means so much more to me than what the average person may experience. When I’m at my worst moments, they know even before I realize it sometimes. There is nothing more calming and grounding than when one of my three (or when I’m extra lucky all of my three) furkids come over and surround me, snuggling up extra close until my panic passes. My dogs have an ability to fix me in ways that modern medicine still hasn’t figured out and for that I am forever indebted to them. When our Bullmastiff/American Bulldog Jenny needed an extensive knee surgery that was quite costly, there was no discussion - it was going to happen. And seven months later when she needed her other knee replaced, we did what we needed to for her because of all of the love that she has brought to us as a member of our family. Forrest, our goofy, high energy, happy Pitbull who loves smooching people, catching frisbees and swimming has given us purpose to educate in an effort reverse the stereotypes and end the discriminations that are associated with his breed. Forrest also made us the proudest doggie parents in the world when he passed his Canine Good Citizen Certification. And then there’s our little Chilabull (Chihuahua/Lab/Pitbull), Wynona whose mother was dumped and just happened to be pregnant with nine little puppies that were blessed to be born at the most caring shelter I know of, Ayres Memorial. That little dog with a big dog personality, won our hearts over instantly and our rule of a “two dog household” was quickly forgotten as this little girl completed “Team Page”. I would be remiss to not mention three canine guardian angels that we were blessed with in years gone by that started our journey into being the best pet parents we could ever be. Angel, a lab boxer mix, our first rescue, our loyal companion for fourteen years, our avid mouse and snake hunter who loved to chase the four wheeler and then curl up into a tiny ball and fall asleep in front of the fireplace. Jackson, our Lab/Collie/Chow rescue who loved to chase soccer balls, watch his Daddy work in the garage and climb up into trees with his Momma - he was happy just being with us, no matter what we were doing, he just wanted to be by our side. And our final boy waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge, Max, our Cane Corso/Rottweiler rescue. Max was dealt a very tough hand before we found him, being abandoned, starved and sick with mange. During his time with us we showed him the love and attention that he had been denied, he got to graduate from obedience school, had a nice warm bed to sleep in every night and got to run and play with his friends Jenny and Jackson until his very last day. There is a saying that dogs give you the best days of your life and also the worst day of your life when they pass. This is true to an extent, but the bond and the memories are forever alive, you take a piece of each of them and carry it in your heart forever. The Stratford 22 A Special Reunion Held to Celebrate Their Progress and New Lives By now most people have heard of the Stratford 22, a group of 22 French Mastiffs found either deceased or starving at a home in Stratford, NY in April of this year. After receiving reports of animal abandonment, New York State Police went to the property and found nine of the French Mastiffs dead and 13 in various states of emaciation with no food or water at the residence. The owner has since had charges brought against him and the dogs were surrendered to James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society after he was unable to make restitution for their care. One of those 13 passed away on the day they were taken to the shelter. Another passed away as well, a time later. At this time, the volunteers and shelter staff have nursed all of the surviving dogs back to health and they have been adopted into wonderful families. There were tons of applications that came in for the dogs and they were matched with what shelter staff felt were the best homes for each dog and their unique needs. Many people stepped up both locally and from around the world to help James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society care for the dogs and they are very grateful for that. They put together a reunion at PIne Park Campsite in Broadalbin, NY on October 14th to bring the adopted dogs and their families together in celebration.

Mike and I attended (the public was welcome to attend as well) and were thrilled to see the progress the dogs are making with their new loving families. While there we were able to speak with some of the adoptive family members, meet some wonderful dogs and enjoy some of the refreshments available under the pavilion at the campground.

We were impressed with the wonderful cookies baked by volunteers and those ordered from Chesca’s Creations, especially the dog bones with the names of the dogs written on them. There were Stratford 22 shirts for sale as well and Capital City Coffee Roasters were there offering free coffee and selling bags of their locally brewed and packaged coffee (brewed in Gloversville, NY) with proceeds going to the James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society. A group photo was taken as well and many media folks were there as well getting stories like we were. We were able to snap some wonderful photos of some of the new families and their rescued dog, some posed and some candid. I was able to briefly speak with some of them and get their contact information. Two of the adopters then sent me stories about their dogs and we wanted to share them here in the magazine with their permission - see page 21. We also wanted to re-print the story written by Lorrie Venneman of Johnstown from our Foster A Pet magazine this past September. Lorrie and her husband Phil adopted one of the French Mastiffs, Lola after briefly fostering her. (see story on next page)

Lorrie and Phil Venneman, of Gloversville, NY have fostered many pets. Some of them have become “foster fails”. When that happens those pets hit the jackpot, as Lorrie and Phil give them a loving home where they will never feel alone and abandoned again. Denise Feldle - Shelter Administrator/James A. Upon parking the car for the event, after Mike and I stopped to take few photos of adopters with their dogs, we were greeted by a sweet young lady named Layla Rust. Layla is the niece of shelter volunteer/president Christie Rust. Upon talking with her for a while we learned that she has been volunteering at the shelter for the past two years. She was there when the Stratford 22 dogs were brought in. She said they were all emaciated, mostly due to losing so much muscle mass. One of the dogs was so bad off, he could not even get up and unfortunately died at the shelter that night. She said they were scared and had fleas and ear mites. Even through it all though they did seem to like people. They were not mean dogs, just very scared and eventually were found to be emotionally abused and neglected. In order to help the dogs on their journey of healing, Layla and the other volunteers took them for frequent walks, matching up the high strung dogs with the less feisty ones on purpose to help them get along. It was wonderful to meet the people who work at the shelter and share this day with them. They should be very proud of the wonderful outcome. The journey has been interesting and it’s not over yet. The dogs are still acclimating to their new homes and slowly gaining weight. See personal stories on the Right and on Page 22

My interest in the fostering starts back 5 years ago when I met a French Mastiff named Max. Max and I immediately had a bond with each other. Unfortunately it did not last, as the court system had another plan for the Max - they thought they knew best, but I knew the real Max. When I heard of the situation with the Stratford 22 (the French Mastiffs found without food or water at home in Stratford, NY) I had a feeling that Max was coming back into Lorrie and Lola my life somehow and that I was destined to help out in his honor. When I first went to Brennan’s to visit them all - 10 were left as 12 had passed away - I walked from kennel to kennel and felt an instant connection to a scared and withdrawn little girl who was cowering in the corner of her kennel. Her name was Agnes and I took her out to meet her and sat on the floor with her. When she snuggled up by me I knew immediately that Max had sent her to me and she was the one. We decided to offer to foster her but unfortunately she developed health issues and passed away. A couple of weeks later I received a call from Christie at the shelter asking me if I was ready to foster another one. Her name was Lola and when we were later able to adopt her, we did so with great joy. Now, when I come home from work each time, there she is - with our other three rescued dogs Winston, Mersh and Sheila - standing right there waiting for me to come through the door to greet her. Every day, there are lots of kisses and hugs from our 110 lb. Lola! Foster parenting is almost always very rewarding but then along comes a dog/cat that is too broken to save. It rips a piece of your heart out, but I wouldn’t let that stop me from helping any animal in need. When you foster a pet you know in your heart that when that pet eventually gets adopted you gave him/her all the loving and the life that they always deserved. The look in your foster pet’s eye will melt you and you know in your heart they appreciate all you do for them. I guess you could call Phil and I “foster failures” as usually when we foster a pet they end up staying with us. We have rescued many stray cats and vetted them before finding them good homes. Senior dogs are alWinston, Mersh and Lola ways welcome here as long as our Winston apwaiting for treat proves. Welcome Home Captain At the Stratford 22 Reunion, we spoke with many of the adopted families. One adopter, David Vigliotti agreed to talk about adopting his dog Captain. Here he shares how it all came about and how he feels about the wonderful shelter and staff and the amazing job they did. On April 5, 2017 I learned of an extreme animal neglect case in Stratford, NY. As I began to look further into it, I learned that the neglected animals were French Mastiffs. Over the next couple of days, I spent a lot of time inquiring about the dogs while trying to figure out how a neglect case this big could happen in Fulton County. I wanted to do something to help but Captain is very content at home wasn’t really sure what I could do. I knew that the Brennan Humane Society, where the dogs were being housed, was in need of supplies. On April 7 I took a ride to the Humane Society. On my way to Brennan I stopped at a few different stores and purchased supplies I knew they could use. While dropping off the supplies that I had purchased, Steve Caporizzo pulled in with a truck load of dog food that was being donated to the shelter. As Steve (Cap) and TJ Hall (Vice President of James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society) prepared to unload the truck, I introduced myself and together we unloaded the dog food. Before leaving Brennan, I went inside to fill out an adoption application. I wanted to give one of the Mastiffs the life they deserved. After completing the application, I handed it to Christie Rust, (President of James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society) and then drove home. As much publicity as this case was getting, I knew my chances of adopting one of the Mastiffs was small. I could only hope at this point. A month and a half later, May 26, 2017, I received a phone call from TJ Hall. TJ advised me that with the court case still pending the Mastiffs were not Captain and Dave taking a break available for adoption. TJ went on to tell me that there were three Mastiffs from all the excitement at the reunion that they were looking to foster. TJ explained that he was looking to get these dogs into homes because their mental status was only worsening at Captain outside playing with his brother, Rocky the shelter. I agreed to foster one of the Mastiffs and on Saturday May 27, my girlfriend Jen and I went to Brennan for a meet and greet with our Pug. While at Brennan, Christie Rust asked her niece Layla to go into the kennel area to retrieve Captain. I went along with Layla into the building where the kennels are located. When Captain saw us he immediately dropped to his stomach, shaking profusely. It was the first time I ever saw such a large dog act this afraid of someone he didn’t even know. Layla was able to convince Captain to come out of his kennel and brought him outside for the meet and greet. It was very obvious that Captain had no socialization skills and was nothing but scared. Being that the dogs weren’t aggressive towards each other we called it a success.

On May 29 (Memorial Day), I brought Captain home. I was then able to take some time off from work to spend with him. I wanted him to get to know me, and to trust me. The first couple of months were difficult. At just over two years old, Captain didn’t know any commands and he didn’t respond consistently to his name. Captain was also very skittish when I brought him home and never showed any emotion. He always looked sad and depressed. He seemed anxious in the house but appeared more comfortable outside. I knew it was going to take a great deal of time and patience. Over time, Captain began to respond to me and has began to trust me. The first time he showed any sign of emotion was very exciting and he actually enjoys playing with his little pug brother now. He finally seems more relaxed inside and greets me at the door when I come home from work. When Captain was rescued by the New York State Troopers in April he weighed approximately 70 pounds. He now weighs about 120 pounds, a more acceptable weight for this breed of dog. He continues to slowly adapt to his new home as we continue to heal his mental wounds.

Adopting Captain has been a very exciting experience. Captain’s breeder from Italy contacted me after learning of the adoption. I assured him that Captain will now live a great life. I have also had the opportunity to meet the caring people who have adopted the other Mastiffs. The employees at Brennan Humane Society have been such a pleasure to deal with. They are all such a caring group and I thank them for this opportunity. by David Vigliotti

Ms. Parker came to the shelter as a stray. She is a shy girl who would do best in a quiet home where she can get all of the love and attention she needs to come out of her shell. Ms. Parker does get along well with other cats.

I came to the MCSPCA as a stray. I have a condition where my third eyelid just keeps growing. It is not medically necessary to have it removed, but to maintain my eyesight it will have to be removed every so often. The good news is, I am a super friendly and outgoing boy and like other cats.

A Child’s Compassionate Wish...

Sometimes a child in our lives will do something out of the ordinary, something that touches our soul. In that moment, life takes on new meaning as we realize that our inﬂuence over our children is so very strong. One mom, Bobbi Jo Haverly, found this out on a Saturday night volunteering (for Bed Shift) at the Regional Animal Shelter in Gloversville, NY. Bobbie Jo is the Education Coordinator at the shelter, organizes supplies every Sunday morning and once a month she does a Saturday Bed Shift. This particular Saturday, she took along her husband and kids. One of her sons, Elliot, was taken with 2 of the dogs there that night. They were father and son, Rue and Reno and they inspired him to write a letter to Santa asking him to ensure that all the dogs at the shelter get forever homes for Christmas!

The only Shelter in Schoharie County, we are a No-Kill shelter founded in 1975 by a group of residents of Schoharie County who were disturbed by the plight of the many starved, abused, and stray animals in this area. A Few Words of Advice about Fostering a Pet

Tina graduated from the New York School of Dog Grooming in New York City. She has been in business for 25 years at The Pooch Parlor. Tina was a freelance writer for the Amsterdam Recorder writing the “Doggie Bag” column. She has been on the WCSS radio talk show with Sam Zurlo. Tina currently volunteers for our local Community Hospice and has been volunteering for Make-A-Wish Northeast Foundation for 22 yrs. She was also a past 9th grade religion advisor at St. Stephen’s Church. Tina was the owner of TNT Twirlers for 14 years, for which she is currently being inducted into the Hall of Fame, and past and original ﬂag team instructor under the direction of Michael P. Pallotta.

As a foster parent we need to teach our foster pets about love and manners! To be a successful foster parent you will need to have much compassion, patience and understanding for the pet. If you are a foster parent, you will need to make sure that the pets are always leashed or in a travel carrier when they are taken outdoors. When transporting a pet some become scared by noises and new surroundings. You don’t want them to run away from you or worse yet to get hit by a car. When you first introduce them to your household be sure to have a quiet place set up for them. The shelter staff can assist you by giving you his favorite blankets and bedding to take home if possible. Having a crate available to your cat/dog at home can prove to be a “safe place” for him or her to go into when they feel unsure of their new surroundings or want to be alone. If you are fostering a pet during the busy holiday season you may want to provide a quiet space for the pet. Too much noise and activity will be going on in the home and the both of you may need a quiet space to retreat to. Don’t forget to have extra blankets and/or outdoor gear for your foster pet during the colder months when taking them outside. Socializing the foster pet is also very important and can be fun. But remember to keep your introductions short, as not to stress out the pet too much. Socializing is one goal that will be very helpful to achieve as it will be easier when the pet moves on to his/her forever family. Ask shelter staff to assist in the best way to socialize the pet in your care. Even if you cannot achieve every goal you set for yourself and your foster, he/she is still going to benefit from being in a loving home while waiting for a forever family to adopt him/her. Eventually you may find that you have become attached to the pet and end up adopting him/her. They call this “foster fail”, but it most certainly is never failure when a pet is assured of a happy, loving life. Do you wish you could adopt but the situation is not right to competely take it on yourself? If that is the case perhaps you may consider “Pet Sharing” with someone you trust to be an equally great pet parent as yourself. This makes going away on vacation, vet expenses & grooming more affordable as it shared by both parties. Please consider this option as it can allow you to adopt that foster pet you fell in love with and thought you could not afford to keep. Of course, adopting a pet still must always be approved by shelter staff. Fostering a pet is a big commitment and takes a dedicated person to follow through until that pet is adopted into the perfect home. Please continue to foster if you can, it is a true gift to be able to do so and much needed! - By Tina Novak

What is FIV and can a cat who has this disease live out a normal life?

You may wonder if it is possible to adopt a cat with FIV It is, as these cats can live normal lives both in quality and duration. They do need to be monitored by signs of

infection and they have a tendency to get dental disease. Please do not let FIV keep you from giving a cat a home. Even though they need to be monitored more than a cat without FIV, they can go on to live long, normal lives as long as you are aware of their health, as they tend to have weaker immune systems. Cats with FIV can even live with other cats in the same household, as long as they do not have fights that break the skin as FIV lives in the salivary glands. Ask your own vet for more information about this.

I asked Dr. Crystal Murray, owner of Country Valley Veterinary Clinic (see ad below) to tell us about cats with FIV:

“FIV stands for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. Although it is similar to HIV, it is not contagious to humans. Most infections occur through fighting. Most FIV infected cats go on to live full lives, although they are prone to infections and require closer monitoring and care than uninfected cats do. Some FIV cats do die during the first 5 years from infection, and some develop signs of the disease during those first years, requiring extra care. Although there may be some helpful medications available, the most important thing the owner of an FIV infected cat should do is practice excellent preventative care under the guidance of a qualified veterinarian.” If you have questions about FIV, it is always best to consult your own veterinarian.

Oz’s personality is as unique as her looks! Oz is a 3-5 year old spayed female. This sweet girl came to us after being found in a wood pile in Fort Plain in December 2015. Oz’s tail has been broken in a few places and her ears are folded down from scar tissue build up because of infections. She was a wreck. But with love, food and a bed (her favorite), she is the beautiful girl you see today. Oz just wants a quiet home where she can get all the love she wants, as well as the peaceful resting time. She loves to sleep! A little timid, but so sweet. She isn’t the best with other cats - but she could be okay with a cat friendly, calm dog. She loves to be pet, and sleep in the sun. She really is a sweet cat. $25 of Oz’s adoption fee has been sponsored by a generous supporter!

6 year old Quick, Quick was found in Amsterdam laying in a compost pile on a 90 degree day. She was found starving with a bloody nose. We rescued her. Then she ate and slept great for a week. After her first veterinarian check it was revealed that she had the bloody noses because her teeth were growing into her sinuses. She had the teeth pulled and was spayed. Her foster has 5 dogs and 5 cats, so she would get along with other pets. She truly is a love bug, after all she has been through I hope someone will consider adopting this special girl!

For over a 100 years dogs and cats in Amsterdam have gotten plenty of love from the wonderful staﬀ and volunteers at the Montgomery County SPCA as they await their forever families. The MCSPCA cares for unwanted, abused, abandoned and neglected animals, including hoarding situations. While they provide sanctuary for companion animals, their work goes far beyond simply housing, feeding and loving these creatures. The MCSPCA’s programs and services include a low cost feline spay and neuter program, a foster care network, food for your pet, micro chipping for your pet, investigating cruelty and neglect complaints, housing animals from cruelty and neglect investigations, animal legislation advocacy, education and more. The MCSPCA is making progress with the new animal shelter. Floor plans are being finalized. We are very proud that we have reached this point. We’re sure the community will be more than satisfied with the new shelter. It is Safe At Last’s mission to help ease the suffering, as well as stop it at its source. We do this by taking animals into our organization from shelters across the country. We are dedicated to assisting shelters which are overloaded with the never-ending influx of new animals (now being seen in record numbers). Our goal is to ease the financial plight of shelters by sending the bulk of our adoptions fees back to them, to be used for food, medicines, cleaning supplies, and other necessities. All prospective adopters must be approved through our application review & approval process. When going to our website click on Adoption Info and click Register - a password will be sent to your email. Go back into our website and using your name and password; you can then access the online adoption form by clicking on Forms/Applications. Click Adoption/New and after completed, submit the form. A volunteer will be in touch to keep you updated and continue with the review process. After you are approved for adoption you may meet one of our fur babies who are being fostered in private homes.

Brutus is a beautiful 11-12 year old Staffordshire Terrier. He was an owner surrender in 2015 so he has been waiting quite a while for his forever home. He is fun, full of life and has so much to offer his forever family. Crate trained and housebroken, he has also taken Obedience Classes at the shelter. Would do best in a home with no cats. Brutus likes kids but would do best in a home with older children due to his energy level. He would do well with calmer female dogs and loves to swim and go on adventures! Brutus walks great on a leash and loves car rides too.

Mountain Rottie Rescue

(see more information on page 31) Church is a 2 year old retriever mix with 1 blue eye. He came to us from Alabama after being shot in the front shoulder by someone. He is completely house trained, crate trained, knows commands, great with other dogs, weighs about 65 pounds. Church has a bit of anxiety and cannot go to a home where he is left alone all day. In his foster home he has free roam of the house and touches nothing. He has been back at his foster home since the middle of August and has been doing great. He is very affectionate, loves to sleep with you and loves to please. You must be willing to submit to a training course with him, he has prior graduated from puppy class with flying colors. No small children. Again, YOU MUST BE ABLE TO BE ATTENTIVE TO HIM THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

A Place for Furry Friends to Play in Saratoga Since 2012 there have been a small group of dog lovers who have advocated for the Saratoga Dog Park. They have hosted events as Friends of Saratoga Dog Park.

Frankie's Friends is Apparel for a Cause. We want to create stylish, animal related clothing for the rescue community and beyond. Our goal is to donate a portion of the profits to a rescue or shelter at the end of every year and to outfit people in unique, stylish clothing that they will want to wear all day long all the while promoting rescue or sparking a conversation about rescue. Two of the friends are Eric Spaulding and Karissa Desofi. They are the owners of Priceless Companions, LLC in Saratoga Springs, NY. Both have also been involved with helping local shelters. They, along with their employees, provide many services for area pet lovers including Pet Sitting, Dog Grooming, Canine Fitness and Waste Cleanup. Some of the events the Dog Park Friends have hosted include: Dash for the Dog Park 5ks, Dog Friendly Happy Hour benefits at The Barrel House and the 5k After Party at Henry Street Taproom. These fundraisers have allowed them to Dash for the Dog Park volunteers: Karissa raise over $11,000 to put into Desoﬁ, Eric Spaulding, Jennifer McDonald, Courtney Gelish and Andy Damon improvements at the dog park.

Puppy Mills are inhumane commercial dog breeding facilities that may sell puppies to pet stores, online or directly to the public (in flea markets or via classified ads) The humans behind the puppy mills disregard the health of the dogs’, both physically and emotionally in order to maximize their profits. It is estimated that there are at least 10,000 puppy mills in the US and fewer than 3,000 of them are regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.* You can help this situation by being an advocate against puppy mills and especially by making sure you and anyone you know visits a shelter or buys from a reputable breeder if they are looking to add a pet to their family. The heartfelt story below is written by a woman who adopted two such dogs and has never once regretted that decision. Jeannie Sherman, of Johnstown, NY and her mom Linda Sherman saw past any obvious physical issues and took these dogs into their hearts and home. Mike and I had the pleasure of meeting all of them this summer and after we heard their story, we asked Jeannie if she would tell it for the magazine. She agreed to do so..and hopes it will inspire others to do the same!

Here is Jeannie’s story... It’s so hard to say for certain what it was that first made my mother and I want to adopt Wilson and Dani. It’s just something you feel in your heart and you know it’s meant to be. They definitely were not your average dogs. Wilson is a puppy mill rescue. He spent the first 5 years of his life in a puppy mill, living in a cramped wire cage, getting very little food or fresh water. He had very little human contact - and what contact he did have was rough and abusive and there was no veterinary care at all. When Wilson was finally rescued from this miserable life, he was skin and bones thin, no hair on his ears or tail, rotting and missing teeth, sore, cracked feet, and a left eye that had fur and crud all matted over it with puss oozing out. His eye looked so bad that his rescuers from Free To Be Me Rescue were not even sure if he had an eye. He needed a lot of medical care - all of this teeth had to be removed, and his left eye was non-functioning, so that also had to be removed. Dani was found on the side of the road, possibly escaping from a local puppy mill or back-yard breeder, and taken to the Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter, in Sprakers. Her fur was Wilson and Dani at home all matted and caked with mud, dirt, and debris. After cleaning her up and cutting all the matted fur off of her, she was nothing but skin and bones - you could see her spine, ribs, and hip bones. She had been bitten by ticks as well, causing her to now have Lyme disease. Healing Wilson and Dani medically was the easy part. Healing their hearts and souls would prove to be the challenge that my mother and I gladly accepted. When you adopt a dog, you do it with the understanding that these animals have literally had nothing their entire lives. Many of them have never had a warm, soft bed to sleep in. Nutritious food, clean water, and a warm, loving place to live has never been there for them. Many of them have so much love in their hearts that they want to give. They just need that one family to open their hearts and home to them and make that commitment. Dani’s larger-than-life personality came out right away. She loved that attention and affection she was finally getting and just couldn’t get close enough to you. All Dani wants to do is be with you, give you kisses, make you laugh and smile at her crazy antics, and give that unconditional love she has so much of. Wilson had a much harder time adjusting. He never lived in a house before. He didn’t understand that a hand coming toward him wasn’t going to hit or grab him roughly. He needed to be with other dogs in order to “learn how to be a dog”. He didn’t know what a bed was - what toys were - what a water dish was. He needed to observe what other dogs were doing and see how the other dogs were interacting with people in order to know that people were good and we Dani at Ayres Memorial didn’t want to hurt him anymore. Slowly, he started to trust and discover that letting someone pet you felt nice. Animal Shelter after she was found He figured out that being picked up and carried was a nice pick me up to his day. Getting kisses, and finally giving abandoned on the side of the road your first kiss, means everything to a dog and it’s forever family. Adopting older dogs, in our humble opinion, is also so much more rewarding. You can see in their eyes just how grateful and thankful they are for even the littlest moments. Wilson and Dani never had the pleasure of running through leaves before. That first time, hearing the crunching under their paws, feeling that crispness as they walked along, you could see the joy and excitement on their little faces. We got to see things for the first time again. We got to experience firsts all over again with them. It really does your heart and soul good. Would we recommend adopting? Of course. Would we suggest older dogs? Absolutely. Would we push for the ones that had a hard start in life and need that extra time, love, and attention? In a heartbeat. By Jeannie Sherman

The Mr. Mo Project saves senior dogs from kill shelters across the United States. These dogs often come with hefty vet bills in order to regain their health so they can live comfortably in their forever foster homes. But, the Mr. Mo Project doesn’t stop after covering their initial medical costs, they continue covering the medical needs of each dog in their program for the remainder of their life. This takes the ﬁnancial demand of a senior dog, that often deters people from adopting them, out of the question and provides homes that give these seniors “The Best of Life for the Rest of Life.” From routine vet visits and medications to emergency surgeries and 24 hour care, the Mr. Mo Project spends an average of $15,000 per month on the dogs in their program. Often these dogs have lived a life of neglect and/or abuse before being dumped at a shelter or left out on the streets in their golden years. PLEASE HELP US GET BACK UP AND RUNNING! IN THE BEGINNING: Our President and Founder, Michelle Lautman, responded to the need in our community of stray and feral cats with nowhere to go, sick, dying, in need of help. Using her own home since 2004, she has hosted hundreds of needy cats and kittens to health and forever homes. Until May of 2016 this was a welcome service to this city. Unfortunately zoning forbids this type of use in a residential zone. All of the adoptable cats were sent on to new homes or rescues/shelters. The unadoptable, felv/fiv positive, elderly, medical care cases, and behavior cases were personally adopted by Michelle. Not one cat was euthanized in the process of abiding by city code. We are still helping people help stray, feral, and owned cats by transporting to a low-cost spay/neuter clinic and sharing information and resources even though there is a constant and ever growing need for more hands on care. The few groups that can help in Fulton County are bursting at the seams and have neither time, space, or funds to help the really sick street cats. Everyone is doing their best. Our focus has turned to fundraising. It was extremely cost effective using an existing home where the bills were already being paid for. The burden to produce enough funds to even go to contract on a property in a rescue friendly community close enough to continue being of help to the cats of Gloversville is a difficult one. We have a huge fan base, but most are the folks we have helped that had and have no resources of their own. We need you. We need your talents . We need grant writers. We need donations towards our building fund. We need tons of prayers, not for us, but for the stray and feral cat population that will continue to grow.
