Hello Fellow Animal Lovers...
Eighth Edition 2021
This is our eighth edition of “Crazy About Pets” magazine...
Finally...after a long year...we have published another issue of this magazine. It seems that this has been a good year for shelters and rescues - adoptions are up. That is most likely due to so many people working from home now. Perhaps if this work from home trend continues long after the COVID19 pandemic is under control, it will mean less of a wait for some of them. However, there are still those particular cats & dogs who are harder to place and we are grateful to be able to put many photos and bios on these pages so their potential adopters will see them. We believe there is a match for every one of them. As usual, Mike & Linda Palmieri we hope this serves as a vehicle not only to inspire people to adopt but also to volunteer, foster or donate. Many fundraisers have had to be cancelled or re-imagined so anything anyone can do to help is greatly appreciated. We are fortunate to have an incredible network of people all over the U.S. working hard to help homeless pets find homes. Every single business who has taken out an ad in this magazine is a partner in helping to bring about a match for a cat or dog waiting patiently. Some dogs and cats may have already been adopted by the time you fall in love with their photo on these pages (this magazine is typically out about 4-6 months or so). That being said, no worries, because any of the rescues on these pages can help match you with the perfect pet for your situation. Go online to fill out an application to adopt, stop by for a visit (you may need to make an appt. - check each website or call) or consider volunteering or donating to any of them. Please let our advertisers know you saw their ad on these pages, they deserve kudos for their part in bringing this magazine to publication. As always, we are forever grateful to every one of you who has submitted an article or helped with this in any way.

***SPECIAL NEEDS KITTEN*** Irene is such a special kitten!
Her back legs don’t work like other kittens, but she doesn’t know any different and plays and runs just as hard as her litter mates. Irene will need an owner who is patient and willing to work with her as her back leg muscles continue to strengthen. She may never walk 100% upright but as you can see from the video her legs aren’t slowing her down AT ALL! She is a medium to long haired, fluffy girl, and really, really super soft. She gives a lot of kisses - I think because she is so grateful that we love her just the way she is!
IRENE
Some of her restrictions and things to know when considering adopting Irene are:
• she won’t able to jump down from (or up to) high places.
• she needs to have someone who will work with her in bending and standing on her back legs each day to continue to strengthening those muscles.
Young • Female
Laverne is affectionate and enjoys pets. Shirley is very leery of new human contact but we feel she will come around given the right home. They need to be in an adult only home.
• since she’s not able to stand up fully on her back legs sometimes (not always, she does pretty good considering!) coming out of the litter box she needs to be cleaned off. She’s used to baths and doesn’t seem to mind them too much, and she definitely loves after bath snuggles. If you have the patience, heart and love for Irene please fill out an application at Amsterdam Kitten Adoption. We would love to set up a meeting with you to see if you can offer her the perfect home.

Animal Control Officer for the City of Amsterdam
Who doesn’t enjoy the unconditional love of a pet? Owning dogs and cats has been shown to lower blood pressure and extend our lives. They provide companionship, purpose, entertainment and joy. Animal ownership has soared during the last year due to the pandemic and people being home from work. The question is… what pet, if any is right for you? There are many options available and what you choose depends on your lifestyle. Are you willing to make a 10-12 year commitment? Do you have time to walk a dog and take them outside for potty breaks? Do you travel frequently and require a dog sitter or a kennel? Do you have time for grooming and up keep on a dog? Dogs require frequent trips outside and attention from their humans to maintain their happy go lucky temperament. If you don’t have time for walks or live in an apartment where a lawn might not be available maybe a cat is for you. Cats are typically a 15-20 year commitment. Cats are litter box trained and require less attention from their humans, although kittens fare much better in pairs as they tend to be mischievous in their younger years. Cats can be trained, like dogs, to preform tricks and even walk on a harness. Both cats and dogs require a regular amount of veterinary visits to maintain their health, from vaccinations, to physicals, grooming to emergency care. The cost of owning a pet the first year is usually the highest. Core vaccines, rabies vaccines, spay/neuter surgery, flea and tick prevention and start up supplies can range from $400$900 depending on the species and breed. Upkeep can be anywhere from $100-$300 annually. Adopting a pet from your local shelter or rescue will lower this cost as typical adoption fees cover all of the 1st year medical requirements. This doesn’t include food, litter, toys or other comforts that we offer our pets. Pet insurance is available and may pet owners set aside an emergency fund or get care credit for those “just in case” incidents. There are other pet options for those who aren’t into furry creatures or aren’t ready for the time commitment required to care for them. Bearded dragons, gerbils, hamsters and small snakes can provide entertainment and comfort in a smaller place and usually with less financial constraints. Sometimes our lifestyle choices don’t always work with pet ownership. Local shelters and rescues frequently look for foster homes to assist them with caring for their animals. You would provide the time, care and love to the animal while he/she awaits the perfect family to take them home. Regardless of your time, finances and living situation, getting a pet should be thought out, researched and something the whole house is on board with. Thousands of pets wind up in shelters, rescues or on the streets when humans get them and aren’t fully committed to caring for them.

CRAZY ABOUT PETS in Fulton & Montgomery Counties & Beyond Eighth Edition - 5
Missing Our Maudie Girl... By Robin Edwards When we heard about the Stratford 22 Mastiffs we decided to donate food. We offered to foster, but over and over we told ourselves we could not adopt, we already had one Dogue De Bordeaux at home, Ruby. We arrived at James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society and saw the dogs, they were so sad, but one, and only one dog brought tears to my eyes as I crouched down and stared at her through the fencing. This one was so sad and sorry looking. So skinny and weak she could barely walk. So Broken. When we showed up at the James A. Brennan Humane Society to pick out our future foster failure we had the choice of who we wanted to bring home. Christie Rust’s words to me “You have your choice, but we were really hoping you’d take Maude. She’s the saddest one. She really needs a family.” So we said...Ok, show us Maude....and out came the dog who had brought tears to my eyes a month and a half earlier. And just like that, we became part of Maude’s story. Maudie Girl, Even after one human treated you so terribly, you still found the ability to love humankind so purely, and allowed us to love you. It took a little while for us to earn your trust, but once we did your personality shined like the diamond you were! You showed us that you were so incredibly sweet, kind, loving, and funny. Stratford taught you the fight for survival. The 22 taught you to never give up. A lot of humans are good, (your former owner) taught you that he is NOT one of them. Christie Rust, Layla Rust, T.J. Hall, Kathy Baker and all the other angels from the James A. Brennan Humane Society taught you that humans can be kind, and fiercely protective. Ruby taught you how to be a family pet and taught you how to play (Watching you discover this was like watching a big puppy discover a grasshopper for the first time). We taught you how to sit and give your paw (which you gave constantly whether we asked for it or not, in the hopes that you’d earn a treat). And I hope that all of us taught you that you were worthy of more than being the financial gain of a puppy mill mama. You were worthy of being loved absolutely and unconditionally. You taught me that wrinkles are beautiful...(Although I must admit I still struggle with this lesson on every birthday.); that Tom Hanks was right and there must be some kind of industrial use for mastiff slobber; and that its true when they say “Who rescued who?”, rescuing is healing for the soul. You taught Hunter and Sawyer the meaning of Gentle Giant. I just wish someone, anyone, would’ve been able to teach you that wood floors are not meant for peeing on. As I look out the window at your slobber stains on the patio floor my heart aches that we couldn’t give you more than 4 years of the good life after being rescued. You deserved so much more. Your slobber stains will wash away in the rain but the stain you made on our hearts that will stay with us forever. David, Lonnie, Erin, Lorrie hug those pups for me and Maudie. Brenda, I’m so sorry you share in this pain. My house is dog free for the first time in 15 years. I feel lost. We will miss you forever our sweet Magical Melting Maudie. Please give Ruby, Bailey and Sebastian slobbery kisses from us. You’ve inspired me to maybe write a children’s book, and donate proceeds to animal rescue. Maybe in retirement, maybe before, maybe just a dream.
You can find our article on the Stratford 22 in the fifth edition of Crazy About Pets magazine. Go to our website at www.creativityunleashed.org - you will find the story on pages 21, 22 & 23.

Fostering Can you
it? o t t i m com
Fostering a pet provides temporary care for shelter animals who may need to live in a home environment for a variety of reasons prior to being adopted out. Fostering is a great way for shelters and rescues to avoid overcrowding at their facilities and allows them to help more animals versus turning them away. Some experienced fosters have been able to strike a balance between separating their fosters and socializing them with their own pets. Fosters are given essential supplies and will have access to veterinary care through the organization they are helping. Every organization has it’s own policies on fostering so check with the shelter of your choice to see what they are. Fostering a pet needs to be a commitment that the whole family agrees to. As a foster you need to be able to let go when it is time for adoption, and you may be asked to attend various adoption events with your foster.
In Sept. 2017 we published a magazine about fostering... It contains great stories and loads of information to help you decide if fostering is right for you!
Go to: www.creativityunleashed.org to read it on our website

This is Fostering. My family opened up our home to foster Loving an animal that might about 2 years ago, in hopes to teach our not know what love is. children (now age 8, 6, & 5) about the Keeping them safe, quality of life each animal should be givteaching them and learning en. We have 2 dogs, 3 cats and 15 chickfrom them..until they ens of our own, so bringing in a foster find the arms of their to get a feel for all of our craziness was forever family. Addy with Foster Dog, Spencer probably the best thing for their future. ~ Emily Walsh The kids with Mac and Cooper I remember having a potential adopter contact me personally to discuss the temperament of a 7 year old foster in our home. As it turned out, her family’s lifestyle was a mirror image of ours...so when the adoption happened, the transition was seamless, but not without many tears on my part. Charlotte with Foster Dog, Cooper Being a foster isn’t only about helping an animal that needs it, but it also helps us. The joy my kids (and animals) get from having a cuddle buddy and a friend, outweighs any sadness we have when they find their forever home. Photo Credit: Freckles Photography

Is Doggy Daycare a good option for your dog?
Bringing your dog to daycare provides exercise and stimulation w/other dogs in a supervised environment. Please don’t confuse dog daycare as a way to learn to socialize your dog. You should not use daycare as a means to start socializing your puppy or dog, but if they are already socialized and dog (and people) tolerant, it can help to maintain that level of socialization. Getting your dog used to attending daycare is great for those times you need to leave them overnight. They will already be familiar with the staff and other dogs and it won’t be as scary for them when you need to be away for a few days. There are many different options for doggy daycare in our area.
Here, we asked Harvey’s Pet in Johnstown, NY a few questions... Dogs at Harvey’s Pet enjoy all kinds of fun activities!
Who should consider dog daycare? If your dog enjoys playing with others in packs, does not have any underlying medical problems that would preclude active play, and has a lot of energy to spare, he’s the ideal candidate for doggy daycare. Attending camp one or two times per week can be the perfect outlet for his boundless energy that builds up, maintains socialization, and provides great mental stimulation
What are the Pros and Cons of Dog Daycare? Pros

Its extremely important to know that not all dogs play well with large packs and that is okay. Some dogs enjoy only playing with one or maybe two other dogs. Not all dogs are the same and there are some who are not suited for a group daycare setting.

Magnolia (Baby D)
A Story of Hope and Love...
What is Mange? It’s a common skin disease in dogs and puppies that are strays, neglected, or abused. These dogs appear to be beyond hope, hairless, with skin covered in sores or with thickened, hard, crusty patches. This is a painful condition, but even serious cases can be treated effectively.
By
Tina Absher Rescuer/Adopter
Magnolia aka Baby D (dragon because she looked like one) joined RER due to a plea for help from the Tuscaloosa Animal Shelter in AL. I saw a picture of what I thought was a mangey puppy. The shelter is a little over 2 hours from where I live and off I went. When I actually saw her in person I was completely taken back at her horrific condition. Somebody had also cut her ears off with what appeared to be scissors. I immediately put her in my Jeep and drove as fast as I could to my vet. This 2 hour drive in my mind was more like 10 hours and I thought she was going to die right in my vehicle. I called my vet hysterically crying. I needed them to be waiting for her arrival. She was examined and my vet told me she was over a year old because her K9’s were already in. Her skin was infected, she was loaded with parasites and she was starving. She was admitted. I came home and cried because I could not grasp the suffering this poor dog had gone through. She is one of the worst I had seen in almost 20 years of rescuing. The story at the shelter was she was purchased for $50.00 from a breeder and the person who bought her thought she would get better? No charges could be brought because the owner surrendered her so she could get help. I just got that ridiculous story out of my head and focused on her. They got an IV in her and started giving her fluids. She was so week she could only stand with help. On day 2 my vet called me to say that the IV fell out because her skin was breaking open and they could not get any access to continue fluids. They set her up in their cat house so she would not catch any dog illnesses as she had no immune system. I went to visit her and she was really weak. To be honest, she was difficult to touch because her skin was bleeding and breaking open. I wrapped her in a blanket, sat in a chair and just rocked her. Someone suggested that I buy canned chicken to see if she would eat it. I purchased it and just left the can in her cage and she dragged herself over and started chowing down on it as well as drank the juice. This was a turning point for her. I went and bought the store out of the canned chicken hoping it would keep her going. She had pneumonia. She was so weak she couldn’t cough the junk out of her lungs. She would try and just that act of minimal activity would make her fall over. I went home and cooked chicken, hamburger & sweet potatoes and she loved & ate everything I brought. She was getting small meals like 4 times a day. My vet wanted me to put her outside on a blanket so she could breath in fresh air and get some sunshine. This was also difficult because she couldn’t walk. I would sit with her for hours outside. She was on 2 different antibiotics as well as steroids. This course of treatment went on for a couple of weeks. I cooked and visited her everyday. We started to bond. I also started bringing her in some toys which she couldn’t play with but, she liked having them with her. She loved her visits so much my vet recommended I take her home at night since nobody was there and bring her back in the morning. To be honest I was scared to death she would die at my house. Her condition was still critical. Her body was like cement and smelled like dying flesh. She really liked being held so I had to take her to bed with me. My husband just looked at me like OMG I can’t believe this dog is in bed with us LOL but, he knew it was not up for debate. While at my house she really enjoyed the companionship of my male Rottie and he took took vigil by her side. I remember thinking this dog could actually die on me. I had only known her for a couple of weeks and was already in love with her. She has heart, drive & is a fighter. We just had to give her something to fight for. She wanted to be loved and she for sure was by our family both human and K9. During the day she was being soaked in baby oil and we had to pick that hard crust off a piece at a time. This was the only way we could get her skin able to grow back hair. After about a week of bringing her home at night my vet thought it would be in her best interest to come home with us full time and bring her for daily check ups. She had started being strong enough to cough that junk up from her lungs and her X-rays showed that she was improving. We were not sure if she would ever be like a normal dog. Her recovery really started to speed up. She no longer had pneumonia, she was gaining weight and that horrible skin crust was coming off. She had tiny bits of hair coming through. She needed medicated baths every other day. She has since grown back most of her hair. So many people sent 12 - CRAZY ABOUT PETS in Fulton & Montgomery Counties & Beyond Eighth Edition

her gifts, comfy blankets, prayers & well wishes. I do believe it takes community to heal these broken, abused & neglected animals & her life is truly a miracle. She was/is extremely bonded with everyone in our home. I was inundated with requests to adopt her. I really thought hard about what was in her best interest (not mine). I already owned 3 dogs and I foster. I struggled with this and my husband & I talked about it for days. We decided we were her best home. She was comfortable & happy. There is never a day that goes by that we don’t get a few laughs because of what a a quirky & funny dog she is. She is like glue to us and we love it! She has to be with either myself, my husband or our Rottie Zeke. Zeke and her dig massive holes in the back yard, chase squirrels and bark at the horses. These are some of her favorite things to do She is either in my lap or my husbands when she’s years as a in the house. She has also been amazing and motherly with our fosters. I truly believe she was meant to be ours. In all of my r I have neve We did a DNA test on her because we were curious what breed she was. It came back that she was 100% American rescuer, been so personally S taffordshire Terrier as were her parents and grandparents both maternal & paternal. Sadly, there is a breeder out ith a dog involved w there making money off of her bloodline. She was a throw away dog to whoever bought her. Sadly, a few weeks ago door who on deaths y heart is she was walking in the kitchen and let out a horrific scream. She could not walk on her back right leg. We rushed survived. M atching her to the vet and X-rays showed that both of her back hips are in bad shape. Oddly, she was also running a fever. We full today w a dog. her just be were all baffled by this. She stayed for the day and they gave her pain meds & antihistamine and sent out blood work er ~ Tina Absh for tick borne illnesses. She was able to come home that night. Her blood work came back negative. A few days went by and then she was unable to walk on her front right leg. We rushed her back to vet and they again x-rayed her but, this time we x-rayed all 4 legs, knees, ankles, cervical & lumbar spine and all were negative. She was still in pain. We switched her pain meds from Rymadol to Previcox (after a flush out) & started her on Doxy anyway in case something just wasn’t showing up. Our vet has diagnosed her with Panosteitis ...“Panosteitis in Dogs” Panosteitis refers to a short-lived (self-limiting) and painful condition characterized by limping and lameness. It is a condition that affects the long bones in the legs of young dogs, usually between the ages of 5 to 18 months. It can occur with any breed, but it is more common in medium - to large-sized dog breeds. The inflammation can affect one or more of the dog’s limbs, making it challenging and painful to move around. With treatment, the inflammation can be reduced and the animal can regain full function and activity.” She can stay on pain meds for a few months and Previcox is safe. So we take it a day at a time. Magnolia will hold a very special place in our hearts & home. I cannot imagine my life without her. She starts training in a few weeks and we plan to get her certified to be a therapy dog so she can visit both children & the elderly. I believe her destiny is to share love & hope. I am just so glad we are able to be a part of her journey.

Chloe is one of my long term fosters.. .this little girl came to me with her siblings when she was about 4 months old and adopted out. A year later I received a message that she is nipping at the kids. When they brought her here she was a raving lunatic ...It took her three to four days in the crate to unwind without growling and one day she came over and licked me. We've been best friends ever since. She has been sent to doggie camp once for 5 weeks and the second time for a couple of weeks. She knows many commands. Chloe finds it hard when people invade her space she gets very nervous. The first thing she does is growl but that doesn't mean she wants to bite you, she just doesn't know how else to act. She is house trained, crate trained, off leash trained. She knows several commands she does not like a lot of commotion it makes her nervous. She would do best with a couple as an only dog or a single person who can devote all their time to her that they can. She loves other dogs, but...she also gets jealous. Her tail wags, she crouches down, her whole body wiggles. One night we had an adoption out of my house - she did absolutely fine with the people and even took a treat from them but she was more focused on what I was doing. I wish someone would please give this dog a chance you will not be sorry. She comes with a remote collar - that is what she was trained on - and it would help with refreshing commands. She was trained at Run by Dogs and Kate, who did amazing work with her. She will also help once again. Email: DALLYSHOPE27@GMAIL.COM if interested.

Diseases of Aging Cats Although cats of every age can become ill, this article attempts to explain some of the more common conditions we see in aging cats. Senior kitties are most at risk for developing diabetes, hyperthyroidism, renal disease, and neoplasia or cancer. While these illness all commonly result in weight loss, cats with diabetes and hyperthyroidism typically have good appetites and may actually seem hungrier than usual. Excessive drinking and urination is a hallmark of both renal disease and diabetes, while nausea and vomiting is common in both neoplasia and chronic kidney disease, and occasionally with hyperactive thyroids.
Dr. Crystal Murray, DVM owner of
In a perfect world, we recommend that senior cats (10 and older) receive examinations, blood work, urine testing, and blood pressure evaluation annually at a minimum. These tests are more important if you have noticed any of the following symptoms: unexplained weight loss, changes in appetite, excessive drinking or urination, and vomiting.
5877 Route 30 South, Amsterdam, New York 12010
(518) 843-2882 Dr. Murray graduated from Cornell University Veterinary School in 1996. She did a brief stint as an emergency veterinarian before settling into a career with small animals, mostly dogs and cats. Crystal lived in NJ prior to moving up to NY in 2006. She bought the closed Mohawk Valley Veterinary Hospital in 2010. Crystal redesigned the building to improve its utility as a veterinary hospital, and supervised its complete renovation. She opened Country Valley Veterinary Clinic a few months after this. In her spare time, Crystal is the mother of two wonderful children, and the guardian of two dogs, four cats, one horse and too many chickens.
The diseases outlined above have a variety of expected outcomes. Diabetes and hyperthyroidism are often treatable with a reasonably good long term prognosis. Although renal disease can be difficult to manage, we can often increase our pets’ quality and length of life. Cancer is a more challenging diagnosis, but sometimes treatment and palliative care are available. In all cases, identifying these illnesses early gives us the best chance for success. As with all pets, there are many diseases not outlined above. Hopefully this will give you a better understanding of behaviors to watch for in your senior cat. Please make an appointment with your veterinarian if you have any concerns about your cat’s health. By Dr. Crystal Murray, DVM

Founded in 1994
Out of the Pits seeks to educate the public about the true nature of the American Pit Bull Terrier and to make them aware that they used to be one of America’s favorite type of dogs. Our efforts are aimed at restoring the Pit bull type dog to its former position of esteem in the hearts and minds of people everywhere.
Our main focus is education and spay and neuter

Your donations pay for their food, housing, and veterinary care. IRS authorization number is 16-1560721. Right now, we are able to save only a small percentage of the abandoned and abused Pit Bulls that we are asked to accept into our program every day. Many must be turned away only because we lack sufficient funding and fosters. Your contribution or ability to foster will help save a dog’s life.
During COVID19 we did as much educating as we could virtually. We want to recognize what our volunteers and supporters have done for us during this difficult time. Their tireless work fostering, processing applications, figuring out creative ways to do virtual fundraisers. Our fundraisers cover our vet bills, food and enrichment needs for our dogs. We are grateful as well for our veterinarians who continued to spay/neuter as needed and see our rescue dogs for emergency needs.

4 yrs. old Neutered Male
Lucas he came to us as a stray , the animal control facility had him 3 months and didn’t know he is deaf. He is a big boy at 80 lbs. Lucas is a joyous boy and loves people - good with female dogs. He seems housebroken and rides well in a car. He uses a doggy door and loves a couch he has the Nickname “Scooby Doo “ Because of his gentle nature.
CORTANA
8 yrs. old Spayed Female Are you looking for an easy going girl who nothing but love? Cortana’s has had a rough couple of months - her owner passed away and she had to be in a boarding situation. Do not let her age fool you, she is full of spunk and erergy! She rides great in the car, walks well on a leash. She has been great with the kids in her foster home, but not with the chickens and cats. She would most likely do fine with a doggy brother. Cortana is very afraid of loud noises, so if you live by people who set off fireworks you will need to keep her safe until it passes.

Senior Pet Adoption
If you think you can do it, please do! Ask anyone who has adopted a senior pet if they regret it. I bet the answer would be “no”.
It’s pretty obvious that when you do so, you are going to get limited time with that pet. But how will that time be spent? Living each day as if it were “the best day ever” for that pet? Maybe! Or maybe you will just welcome him/her into your home and let them quietly live out their life the way it was meant to be - the give and take of unconditional love. It comes in many forms. Read on to find out how this pet mom, Donna Gold, and her family have fostered and adopted one senior dog after another, with no regrets!
By
Donna Gold Senior Pet Mom
We have adopted 4 seniors in the last 3 1/2 years. I have been volunteering at the Saratoga County Animal Shelter for almost 4 years, and that’s where I met most of them. The whole reason I started volunteering was because I thought that our family was already complete and our house full with 2 dogs, 2 kids, and 2 parents, and I thought I might enjoy spending an hour or two walking a shelter pet instead of going to the gym. Apparently, I was wrong. Cliffy got my attention when I heard him singing the blues. I was sure it belonged to a hound, because it was a rich, sweet howl that seemed out of place among the excited yips and loud barking in the kennels. I was new, so I was limited to only walking dogs in the one room of kennels. But I sought out this song and found a colossal chocolate lab with a rapidly wagging bobbed tail and the sweetest of amber eyes. It was also impossible to miss that most of the fur from his chest had been shaved and a foot long surgical incision wrapped around his middle. But he didn’t care. Cliffy greeted me with kisses and was ready for his walk. I found out that he had a large foot ball sized fatty tumor removed from his back, but unfortunately, he had multiple mast cell tumors all over, one of which was inoperable around his urinary tract. He had been abandoned on a back road and found by animal control. He was believed to be about 12. It was deemed that he would have to be a hospice adoption, but the rescues they were working with at the time, didn’t have room. “and I thought I might Cliffy living his best life! I’m an acute care oncology nurse who has lots of experience with hosenjoy spending an pice patience. In order to qualify, there has to be a projected life expectancy of 6 months or less, and it just hour or two walking weighed on me thinking this dog had limited time, and he would spend it waiting in a shelter. a shelter pet instead I set out to help. There had to be someone who could help. I put out pleas on Facebook and contacted friends of going to the gym. and family, and although there was interest, it wasn’t working out. And I would go in to see that amber eyed Apparently, I was boy with the wagging tail and be more determined. After a couple of days, I realized I was someone. wrong.”
I think we all spend a lot of time telling ourselves what we can’t do, and maybe we should start telling ourselves about what we can do.
After everyone agreeing, and successful meets with him and our two dogs we brought him home on the 4th of July, prepared to be running a hospital for an invalid dog. But he showed us that he was ready to do some living. So we set out on a bucket list adventure. We did every day things like play, hike, and having a t o n to rd swim. We went to dog friendly restaurants, pet stores, the library, to meet cousins, and won a costume In rega to show of s to o h p contest. We thought it was his adventure, but it turned out to be ours. We did more as a family, spent f o lot says... a n n o D , y less time on our phones, and were constantly challenging ourselves to come up with new experiences Cliff just n o t lo we could give him. a d “we focuse t o n d n a , But he taught us about finding joy in simple things. He loved kids, and turned into a young pup y da living every it g n that grinned from ear to ear when they were around. He enjoyed to chew on his after dinner stuffed turi always cap .” marrow bone every night when we all were relaxing. He loved playing and running with the pups in ra e on cam the yard, and checking out the ducks in Congress park.

Senior Pet Adoption Cont’d
We thought that there would be messes and accidents, but not a single one. Ever. He came fully house trained, with manners, and tricks. His med costs were minimal. Cliffy took meds to keep his tumors in check which cost about $15 a month, and he needed to be treated for pancreatitis once after inhaling an entire compressed rawhide bone he had won on one of his outings, which had nothing to do with his illness. We enjoyed a time thinking that the vets must have been wrong, but they weren’t. A little over six months from when he came home, we said goodbye to our boy. I thought that if I knew it was coming, I could cheat the grieving process. I promise, I am not that clever. He changed us. He was the purest of souls. As he was closing his eyes for the last time, the technician was saying how lucky he was to find us, and that they hoped another terminal dog that they knew would be so lucky. We were the lucky ones. The next day, my husband said he would never trade the time we had with Cliffy and he would choose to do it again. As the day went by and I went back to walk dogs, I met the girl who had been diagnosed with terminal metastatic mammary cancer, a yellow lab mama named Daisy who was about 10. All I could think about was the passage about a dogs last will and testament, about honoring the love you were given. I also knew that we had all the supplies, beds, dishes, leashes etc. So I went home and asked my husband if he really meant it. Could he really do it all again and he said yes. We asked our kids, and they said yes, too. And even our two pups, were more than happy to welcome Daisy into our family. She was so different. She was so agile and vibrant, a natural mama dog to our pups. We did lots of things together. She loved hiking and exploring, and she even won a national photo contest. She was so smart and gentle. But her disease caught up to her, as well, and we said goodbye 11 months later a few days before Christmas. Although we did Foster Dog Jenkins who was adopted by Donna and her not end up adopting her, we fostered another senior dog that had survived a fatal family with his favorite ball fire. Her and our male dog did not get along, but she was adopted by a lovely lady and has explored the mountaintops of the Adirondacks. This photo of Daisy won a National Photo/Essay Contest. It was taken at It’s strange after having 3 dogs, having only two felt a little empty, even though they are both vibrant and amazIndian Kill Nature Preserve ing on their own. Our shelter did not have good matches for us at the time, so we checked out some seniors from around the capital region and fell in love with an estimated 10 year old bull dog named Jenkins, He had a heart condition, but was not considered terminal. Our female dog Ruby fell in love with him from day one. He was our pirate. He didn’t like to share his toys so he tried burying them in the yard. It was fun discovering all the things he enjoyed doing, and even the ones he did not. Sadly, he became very ill 7 months later from an illness that isn’t typically fatal, but he did not recover. It was devastating. We did not look for another. But then a few months went by, and one of my shelter friends said they needed a foster home for a senior pup named Leo. Leo’s previous owner had gotten sick and passed away. Leo was a sweet 12 year old SharpeiPit mix. What we didn’t know until his vet visit was that Leo’s dad wasn’t the only one who was sick. Leo had a melon sized tumor in his belly pressing on his spine, blood vessels and organs. Although originally his slow gait was thought to be from arthritis, it was something much bigger. It looked like we would only have him a few days, because he stopped walking and eating. So we adopted him, thinking if nothing else we would give him our name. But then Leo got his second wind. He would eat with our cat and dogs, he would go on walks through the woods and smell every tree. We took turns sleeping with him downstairs, Leo enjoying outside time because he couldn’t do stairs, but he loved being surrounded by the zoo that is in his favorite warm jacket our family. His iron will to love us, kept him with us another month, until we said our goodbyes. It sounds like a lot of loss. And it is. Leo and Stitch were best buds for the month Donna fostered Leo. This photo came in first place in a photo contest.
But what we gained was priceless. Unconditional, unwavering love. The knowledge that we are limitless. That we are not defined by age or illness. That we are each irreplaceable. And truly, that love is always the answer. Those are just some of the gifts these dogs gave us.
We are now a family of 3 dogs, 4 cats, 2 kids, and 2 parents. We do not currently have a senior, but a special needs beagle with seizures instead.

GAUGE
The only Shelter in Schoharie County, we are a No-Kill shelter founded in 1975 by a group of residents of Schoharie County who were disturbed by the plight of the many starved, abused, and stray animals in this area. ASSV is a not-for-profit organization. It is comprised entirely of volunteer members and Board of Directors with the exception of the shelter manager and support staff.
The goal of the ASSV is to alleviate stray animal suffering and to maintain a shelter to house, feed, and care for these animals until safe and loving homes are found for them. ASSV also strives to educate the public to spay or neuter their pets to eliminate the problem of unwanted offspring.

Whether you can volunteer for ASSV on a regular basis, or just a few hours now and then, we can likely use your help! Volunteers assist in the operations of our shelter in many ways – assisting shelter staff with on-site animal care duties, maintenance, and administrative chores, as well as helping at fundraising events, running errands, and more. CRAZY ABOUT PETS in Fulton & Montgomery Counties & Beyond Eighth Edition - 23
For so many of us our pets are so close to our hearts day in and day out. We treat them as family and we realize so much joy in the give and take of caring for them and loving them. Then there comes “that time”. It hurts so much, and sometimes writing about our beloved pets helps us get through the pain. I have seen some incredible tributes to pets on Facebook lately so I thought it would be nice to reach out to some people who have faced the pain of losing a beloved pet and see if they would like to write a small paragraph in honor of them, along with a photo. These pages are not meant to be sad or negative in any way, only to bring comfort to those who need it and an understanding that it is not easy to lose a pet, but their memory will live on in our hearts, always.
Sharon and Karl Markwardt lost two of their precious dogs last year. It was Sharon’s post (when seen on Facebook) that inspired us to want to publish the beautiful words of remembrance of pet parents. I find that fellow humans tend to slip neatly in to categorical notches, fulfilling varied needs at different times in our lives - parent, lover, teacher, doctor, friend. But how is it exactly the only a dog can be an all-encompassing, beautiful convergence of Everything, rolled up into one selfless being; champion of cuddles, licker of wounds, booster of confidence, wiggler of butts, lifter of moods, finder of lost objects, clean of spills, repository of endless smiles, staunch defender of hearth and home, bringer of shoes, crafter of soul magic, kisser of tears, healer of hearts, and font of unconditional love? All without complaint, demand, or a single moment of hesitation. A dog will be anything your heart needs him to be.
How many of us can make claims to such greatness??
Written by Sharon Markwardt
There are all types of dogs out there: tiny, tank-sized, quiet, booming, crazy, calm...and they’re all spectacular beings in their own right. And then there are Soul Dogs - once-in-a-lifetime dogs - those special dogs that somehow read your thoughts, connect mystically with your emotions, remove live bees from your tangled morning hair with their teeth (yes, this actually happened!) and dive straight into the depths of your soul with just a look and a head tilt. Gio was all of that and more to me. Not only was I an open book to him, he had access to my whole blessed library of disasters and still adored me. And that bond made losing him unbearable. Gio’s spirit is now permanently, sacredly interwoven with mine, and although I’ve tried desperately to soak up floods of tears with memories and photos, I’ll always be that puzzle searching for its missing piece till we meet again. It hurts that dogs’ lives are so short. But whenever I start mourning the brevity of Gio’s life - and his sister’s - I’m reminded of the fact that their lifespans allow us to enjoy a kaleidoscope of incredible souls throughout our lives. Each one unique. Each one precious. Each one worthy. Each one gifted to us, often by a force beyond our comprehension.
And each one makes our winding journey “home” that much more beautiful. This is our favorite picture of Bella Marie. We always said it was reminiscent of that scene in “Little House on the Prairie” where Laura and her sisters skipped and danced through fields of wildflowers. Pure bliss. Somehow, it summed up Bella’s philosophy perfectly: Life Itself is the miracle. Bella was already a wise old girl there; frosty-faced and creaky in the knees, with puppyhood just a faint blip in her memory. Her body declined, as the bodies of all old dogs eventually do. But her eyes - those brilliant eyes - never lost that spark of faithful love singular to a dog. You can see it clearly in the photo. I can tell you that spark was there at every tennis ball toss; at every ear scratch and belly rub; at every adventure and joyride; at every single “Good Girl”. It was there when we gently massaged her hip that grew the dreaded tumor. It was there when we rested with her on the summer grass as her clock wound down; an umbrella shielding her frailty from the hot sun. A glimmer of it was even there when Bella finally surrendered her spirit in my arms last July, as I whispered so much love and gratitude into her floppy ear for the last time. I miss Bella immensely. Still. Always. But dogs never really leave us, you know. She’s here; she’s everywhere - still in watchful vigil at my bedside while playing endless rounds of tag with her brother Gio among the moon and stars. She’s waiting for the moment when our souls can at last reunite. And in the grand and glorious scheme of Time...it won’t be long at all. I love you, my girl. 24 - CRAZY ABOUT PETS in Fulton & Montgomery Counties & Beyond Eighth Edition

When our pets leave us it doesn’t matter which way they went - be it accidental, old age or illness, it hurts as deep inside our heart and mind as it gets. If you have lost a pet, it may help to sit down quietly and put pen to paper or your fingers to your keyboard and describe your pet and what he/she meant to you. Seek out help if it gets too hard or if you are alone and you have no one to talk to about your feelings. In our 6th magazine we printed an article about bereavement on page 8. Go to our website at www.creativityunleashed.org if you would like to read it. In it you can find out about a few support groups in the area. Thank you to those of you who graciously allowed us a peek into your hearts as you honor your four legged friends who have crosssed the rainbow bridge.

We think about our sweet Lily Bug every day and miss her so much. She was a tough girl and fought hard to the end. She had a lot of struggles in her life ... her first Mommy died of cancer, her second Mommy had to go to assisted living and then we were blessed with her. I miss her sweet kisses. I miss her stubbornness. I miss her piercing eyes that could sway you to do whatever she wanted. I miss her “talking.” I miss her jumping around. I miss her sweet face. I always told her she was the prettiest girl in all the land ... and that will never change.
Spencer was a serious 140-pound monster, who was full of love. He would give me the staredown if he thought I was being too silly & he pouted whenever I left. He was my first baby & has a special place in my heart. The day he suddenly left us was one of the worse days of my life. ❤ I miss my Bubbalicious every single day.

My Sweet Chester was 90 pounds of pure love. His happy place was on my lap and he gave the best kisses ever. He was a trooper, enduring diabetes that caused him to go blind. Nothing ever got him down though, he was always happy and always ready for an adventure. This sweet boy was my entire world and not a day goes by that I don’t wish for some more snuggle time with my Boo Boo. ❤
Leah and Bill “took in” Lily Marlene and Baby Joey when their mom went into assisted living. Before that, they had lost their two beloved dogs, Spencer and Chester.

Wendall was found as a stray in Tennessee. As the saying goes “you can’t save them all”. This saying is so true for a sweet little guy named Wendall. He was referred to Dally’s Hope 4 Paws Rescue in Feb. of 2021
I saw his sweet little face, all matted and dirty. He was about 8 years old I didn’t hesitate to bring him in to Dally's. SHE left for transport with a huge group of volunteer drivers from TN on Feb. 16th only to find out that day SHE is a HE - Oh how we laughed, Wendall it is! When this handsome love arrived I noticed his back legs were wobbly when I picked him up. I also noticed his ribs on one side bulged. The next day we took him to the vet and I was told that he had a huge mass in his belly. Oh how I cried, after only having him less than 24 hours. My first call was to an emergency hospital to get scheduled for an Written by ultrasound. My 2nd call was to a prior adopter who does grooming, she got me in the next day, My 3rd call Penny Ross was to a prior adopter and foster mom who does professional photography, she got me in 2 days later (these photos). Wendall did not want to eat but he perked up and tried to eat my cookies. He ate 3 of our favorite Windmill cookies. From then on it was pancakes syrup, cheese danishes, windmill cookies, liverworst (4 days later bologna) turkey, package macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes. He ate off of a fork! He would beg each night only to my boyfriend at dinner - he got what he wanted! He even got a delivery from another adopter from Aldi with all of his favorites. Our first trip to the petstore he got a Superman (SUPER WENDALL) bandana that he wore daily to give him his super powers. The ultrasound day came and I got the heartbreaking news of CANCER - kidney and spine. My world Photo Credit came crashing down! I wanted to give him the best, I was told to put him down. HOW CAN I??!!! Went for Freckles Photography, a 2nd opinion with my vet. She asked “what’s he doing?” I said, following me from room to room, eating , Emily Walsh sleeping all night, going outside, begging for car rides. If I ever walked out the door without him he would yell MAAAAAAA - yes Wendall, I’m coming to get you. She said he’s not ready! The words just melted my heart. This little one never was without me, he must have ridden about 1000 miles in my car , he would go to doggie wash when another dog I had to take and sit in the cart and watch, he went on every adoption with me, trips to the pet stores, rides to take others to the vets. He met so many people. What a dog!! I wanted to give him a lifetime of love and experience because I didn’t know how long he had. Sadly all the love in the world couldn’t save my new best friend, on March 29th he started to cough, he couldn’t settle, my little Super boy passed away at 4am. I am forever grateful to have had this chance to give my little man that was just thrown away like trash the absolute best life that I could in the very short time I rescued him. He will live in my heart always. CRAZY ABOUT PETS in Fulton & Montgomery Counties & Beyond Eighth Edition - 25
We can keep our pets memories alive in many ways. Looking at old photos, remembering good days with them or just the normal day to day of loving them unconditionally. We can share our love for our passed on pets with other pets who are seeking that same type of love. Those pets will be forever grateful for the chance to help heal your heart. Even if you choose not to adopt again, you can still share your love for pets by volunteering at any local rescue.
Cynthia and Michael Pedalino lost their precious Lily after many health issues. They tried everything they possibly could to get her well. She had an amazing life with them and loved her dog siblings as well. Our dogs come into our lives to teach us the meaning of love and loyalty. They depart to teach us about sorrow and strength. It never stops hurting, just everyday it becomes easier to deal with the emptiness. We shared the affection and the bonding moments that will never fade or be replaced. It took the littlest of smiles at her to have the tail wag, it took a rub of her belly to make her eyes close and calm her down for the night. All the memories and photos we have together, I look at them now and all the mix emotions resurface, I smile, and I cry, and I feel the loss again. After all these years that past, I still feel the piece of my heart missing that you took with you to heaven. When I think about you and I whisper I love you, sometime the words feel empty, but the tears are real. No one can truly understand the bond we formed together and the love, until they experience the loss. I am not sure who wrote this quote, but truer words were never spoken “I loved you your whole life. I’ll miss you for the rest of mine.”

Holly and Roger Therrien lost their two dogs Sampson and Delilah in 2013. Miley was rescued a month after Sampson had passed on. When our three dogs passed we buried them in our yard each with a note describing who they were. I wrote these notes minutes before we buried them. This is my precious Miley’s note... This is our little dog named Miley, we rescued her in 2013. She had a rough life before we rescued her. That all changed when she came to live with us. We absolutely adored Miley, we did everything we could to keep her happy, healthy & loved. Miley brought much needed joy to our lives after we had lost our Sammy Boy. Miley’s favorite person in the whole world was her daddy. Her whole day was spent waiting for him to come home so she could cuddle on the couch with him & share ALL his snacks, especially pizza, her favorite! She was as small as the cats she shared us with, but make no mistake, she was the BOSS! She was a gift from God.

We are so devastated to lose our baby girl. I just want to nuzzle her beautiful fur, take her for a walk & give her anything she wants to eat. Thank you Jesus for giving us this perfect little dog with the squished in face, turned up nose & big ears. We will miss our baby forever. Rest in peace our beautiful precious Miley. Woofie. The Cat Sanctuary & Information Center Reopens in Broadalbin, NY After being closed for a while they finally have a new home! We are a 501-C-3 Nonprofit organization. We are run completely with volunteers. Unfortunately we have very limited space for intake and most often no space, but our volunteers are still here to assist you in any way we can.
It’s been a heck of a year plus for us and the entire world, but true to pandemic form, many great changes have ensued because the creativity of the human spirit can not be quelled. While the world was hunkering down, locking up, and closing in - we at the sanctuary moved to our new location in Broadalbin. Out of the city, into the country. Social distancing at its finest with trees, fresh air, the discovery of bugs I never knew existed (and my dad was an exterminator - so I know bugs!), and lots of happy kitties.

People helping people help feral, stray, and owned cats
(and some other beaked and furred critters too)
It’s been a tough time with kitty illnesses, kittens sick on intake, I mean can we talk about ringworm, distemper (panleukopenia), calicivirus, herpes virus - GAH! In the midst of the craziness, of shortages of veterinarian appointments, shortage of spay/neuter clinics, shortage of supplies from time to time - we’ve never been short on love, compassion, headbonks, and purrs. Through our great rescue partners, we have found a traveling spay/neuter clinic and managed to “fix” 40-50 cats a month through Upstate Spay and Neuter Services who willingly traveled 2 hours to meet us in Schenectady each and every month. They have been such a blessing and willingly accepted owned cats into their program along with our own rescue kitties. I have placed the word fix in “ “ because the kitties will tell you they were never broken! We do have many cats, kittens, and special needs furkids for adoption. We ask that you go to our website, check them out, fill out an application even if you just want to meet them all, and we’ll work with you to make an appointment that suits all schedules. Until we have enough volunteers to have actual set hours of operation, we will be by appointment only.
Go to Facebook to Watch the cats’ maiden voyage on their new deck in their catio. Thank you Hammertime Construction HCT and all who donated to make this happen. Happy kitties!
Speaking of volunteers - do you love cats? Do you have any mornings free? Do you love playing with poop? Even if you don’t love playing with poop, I’m sure we have something you can enjoy contributing to the health and well being of the kitties here. From hands on to media management, fundraising to fun raising, carpentry and building stuffs - we need you! Love cats but allergies get in the way? Financial donations may be the best way to get involved as you can imagine social distancing and pandemic stuffs have made it extremely hard to fundraise to meet all the needs here. You can donate on our website or follow us on Facebook (and hopefully Instagram soon) for other ways you can help. Yep, it’s been a heck of a year - and none of this would have been possible without the love and prayers of every single one of our friends and families. Can I get an AMEN! ~ Michelle Lautman Donations can be mailed to: TCSIC, PO Box 344, Gloversville, New York 12078 or to Paypal under MLAUTMAN@NYCAP.RR.COM - please put a memo that your donation is to TCSIC or something specific like a particular surgery.

CRAZY ABOUT PETS in Fulton & Montgomery Counties & Beyond Eighth Edition - 27
Charlie’s Food Pantry
- Started in 2017 by Kim Pacheco in honor of her beloved Pomeranian Charlie
For 2019-2021 we have collected a total of $3,282 in donations and had expenses of $2,788. Thank you to all who has donated monetarily or by purchasing food, etc.
Kim started the Behavioral Health Pet Food Pantry at St. Mary’s Healthcare because so many of the patients have pets at home that they love. Their pets are a source of comfort and support, and many times are the only friends or family they have. Some patients have stated that their pets are a reason to get up every day, and focus on something other than themselves. Pets teach all of us about responsibility, and best of all, offer unconditional love and companionship. But oftentimes, the patients struggle to care for their pet due to lack of financial resources and basic pet care knowledge. Charlie’s Food Pantry accepts donations to help them keep their pets healthy , knowing that the pet will not be the only beneficiary. The patients themselves stay healthier when they get the help they need for their pets.
I am blessed to have SO many animal loving co-workers, friends and family, who have supported this from the beginning. I would not be able to do it without them. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. ~ Kim Says Kim...”I volunteer at Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter, and they are a big supporter of the pet food pantry, donating dog and cat food, treats, toys, dog clothing, leashes, collars, and bowls whenever they can. Ayres has also been able to assist us with taking in animals that had to be surrendered when their owners could no longer care for them. “

“My Love Affair with Cats”
By
The Story of Pip
Karyn O’Byrne Volunteer/Foster Mom
It was June of 1981. I graduated high school, turned 18, took a job in the city and moved into my first apartment all within a month. As a dual house-warming/birthday present my all-knowing mother presented me with a 10 week old orange tabby kitten she found in her yard, trying to pick a fight with her 100 lb. male sheep dog named Tuxedo. Not surprisingly, the tabby was winning as our Tux was no match for the hiss, sputter and spit of this tiny creature, determined to defend himself to the death… He arrived at my door, courtesy of mom, with matted fur, sharp little teeth and tar adhered to the pads of his tiny, once-pink toes. I was in love. I named him Klaus Mein, after the lead singer of my favorite band, The Scorpions. Throughout the years Klaus kept me company, meowed at thunder storms, slept at the foot of my bed like a sentry and loved me, even when my boyfriends didn’t. Klaus was the first, but certainly not the last, of my love affairs with cats. Pip at a playful moment! This is the part of my story where I introduce you to my latest acquisition: Pip. Now, Pip really acquired me because he stole my heart the moment I laid eyes on him. It was a year ago, at the usual Sunday Wilton Mall adoption Clinic (by the fountain!) I was a rookie volunteer, recently arrived, transplanted from New Jersey, and just learning the “rescuing” ropes from Wendy Mongillo, our beloved HOPE founder.
By the way, Wendy wants you all to know that we’re always looking for new volunteers and Foster Parents at H.O.P.E.!! Pip was being surrendered before my very eyes and when he looked at me I melted. You all know that look; no need to explain further. As it turned out, I had, and still have, 2 cats named Bob and Beatrix and had reached my “2 pet limit” at my apartment complex. So off went my Pip to a fantastic foster family and we didn’t see each other again for 6 months. One day my sister, Valerie, called and said there are four kittens in her friend’s basement; no sign of the mother cat and a broken basement window. We rescued the kittens but now what? They were barely old enough to be on their own and needed special care and attention. Pip knows In stepped Pip’s fosters, Ben & Laura. They happily took all 4 tiny terrors but in return for this avalanche of kittens asked if anyone could he is King! possibly foster Pip. It was fate. I went to my apartment manager and asked if I could “foster” a cat. She, being an animal lover too, said yes! So, technically, I am fostering Pip for all eternity. And we’re both just fine with that. H.O.P.E. is a rescue group, meaning a dedicated group of animal lovers who want nothing more than to NEVER have to do this kind of work again, because that would mean every cat and every dog had a warm and loving home to call their own. H.O.P.E now has an adoption center in Wilton Mall open 7 nights a week and we need more volunteers and fosters, so please stop by or check out our website at hopeanimalrescue.org. Thanks from all cats and dogs!! See more about H.O.P.E on page 17 Our mission:
501(c)(3) nonprofit, all volunteer dog rescue organization that focuses on rescuing and placing shelter dogs in and around Albany, New York that will not be available for adoption due to behavioral or medical concerns, as well as surrendered dogs that have not passed the assessment to enter a shelter, to reduce the number of dogs euthanized.

115 lbs. Housebroken Comedian Very Strong
Goober Gibbs is still looking for a family to grill beside and play ball this summer! He does overheat fairly quickly though and also enjoys relaxing in the air conditioning or the cool grass. No matter what the weather though this boy will no doubt keep you laughing! The perfect home for Gibbs would be with a single person or a couple that has a fenced in yard, no children, including teenagers, or small animals. He may do well with a female dog his size, but so far has not met a dog that can tolerate his play style. He does overheat fairly quickly though and also enjoys relaxing in the air conditioning or the cool grass. No matter what the weather though this boy will no doubt keep you laughing! Gibbs is located in Troy, NY and we are only accepting applications within 90 miles in order to have multiple meet and greets before going to his forever home. He is neutered, vaccinated, housebroken, crate trained, and rides great in the car. He is an absolute comedian and always keeps you laughing. He loves to go for walks and adventures with someone that can handle that strength. Even though Gibbs can be energetic, he also tires quickly and enjoys being a bum. He likes to play in the yard and then relax with his people. Gibbs is also a great guard dog, so it’s best to keep him separate from visitors. Food is the way to his heart though, and once he trusts someone he is just the best dog and so much fun to be with!

TNR WORKS - THE DOLGEVILLE C.A.T. PROJECT
The colony that started the Dolgeville C.A.T. Project TNR (Trap/Neuter/Return) Program. All 25 cats and kittens have been altered and vaccinated against rabies.
Under Dolgeville Forward’s Health & Safety Committee, the Dolgeville C.A.T. (Cat Action Team) Project was organized in the Fall of 2018 after a feral cat living in an outdoor colony tested positive for rabies in the village. They began a TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) program to humanely trap, spay and neuter, and vaccinate against rabies outdoor cats within the village, and now are reaching out to their neighboring communities of Manheim, Oppenheim and Salisbury. They have now helped 206 cats, with assistance in rehoming friendly cats and kittens in addition to the TNR program. Getting feral and stray cats spayed or neutered prevents them from reproducing, helping to stop the rising cat overpopulation. This can help the quality of life for feral cats, help reduce the number of cats around your neighborhood, and reduce the spread of disease and the number of cat deaths. You can make a positive difference for the feral cats in your community by gathering likeminded animal lovers and starting a TNR program. For more information on the Dolgeville C.A.T. Project, leave a message with the Dolgeville village clerk at 315-429-3112 or private message us on our Facebook page - Dolgeville Forward CAT Project Trap/Neuter/Return. Clipping Nails and What the Heck are DEWCLAWS?

Located at the Galway Family Insurance Company at 5243 Rt. 147, Galway, New York 12074 (518) 843-1537 and (518) 882-2171
Tina graduated from the New York School of Dog Grooming in New York City. She has had her business for 31 years. Tina was a freelance writer for the Amsterdam Recorder writing the “Doggie Bag” column which, in 2008, was published into a book by the UPS store in Amsterdam. This year she has also published “To Love And Be Loved”. She has been on the WCSS radio talk show at various times with Sam Zurlo.
Pet’s dewclaws are found on the inside of the dogs’ legs. Some are loose and dangly on the rear legs. Front dewclaws really do Not have a purpose for our little pets. Dogs hold toys and treats with their paws. Their nails are the “grippers” that hold onto the toy. I often see them getting caught in blankets and even their collars as they scratch themselves. Pulling the dewclaws makes them bleed and then they must be removed by your veterinarian. Most breeders have the puppies’ dewclaws removed for this reason. When puppies are little they have cartilage and tendons around the dewclaw which make removing them easy. The same for “docking tails/“ - That’s another article!! Some dogs have double dewclaws, rear dewclaws and double dewclaws. Veterinarians usually remove those when your pet is sedated to be spayed or neutered. Certain large breed dogs have front and rear double dewclaws. Those had a purpose of balancing the dogs while walking on mountains and snow. Most of those large breed dogs are Working Dogs. Nails have a “quick” nerve which supplies blood to the nail. If you cut the nails to close to the nerve it will bleed. We have medicine to apply to the bleeding nail. It does sting when applied but it stops the bleeding. By doing regular nail clippings your pet can be comfortable from these situations. Check your pets’ nails at least once a month and have your groomer or vet staff clip them. Some dogs kick their feet back when going to the bathroom. Some are walked so much that the nail is flattened down to the quick. The nail tips need to be clipped. Body scratches, rashes and skin infections can arise when your pets’ nails get too long. They can also cause injury to their ears and eyes. Licking and biting at their nails, dewclaws and pads will also cause injuries. Some pets are bored or have anxiety issues that cause them to chew at their nails and feet. Taking care of your pets’ feet and your feet are very important. Keep the stones out of your shoes!!
Happy Walking!!

Rottie Empire Rescue - Saratoga Springs, NY This Guy is a Big Hunk of Love! Our mission is to rescue and rehome dogs in forever homes, and to avoid the need for rehoming in the future by promoting responsible pet ownership. We seek to educate the public on issues facing companion domestic animals through articles, public awareness and events to promote humane treatment of animals, including the responsibilities and duties of ownership of Rottweilers and other “bully” breeds. We encourage and facilitate proper veterinary care including vaccinations, spaying and neutering.
We are a 501c3 tax exempt organization. All donations are tax deductible. Founded in 2010

SCOUT
Two beagles isn’t double trouble, it’s double the love!!
To separate these two is unthinkable. They rely on one another. They came from a very abusive situation, having been deemed useless hunting dogs and left in cages outside. Middle Aged They are now thriving in their foster Beagle Mix • Neutered Male home. Playing, snuggling cats, snuggling everyone! Both love their walks. He gets along well with other dogs. Timid, so best in a home Working on his house manners. without young children. Shy, will need patient owner.

PUPPIES!!
MORGIE PORGIE
(Not all are shown here)
Austrialian Shepherd/Cattle Dog Mix Mom has a sweet temperament. However, this is a breed that needs a LOT of daily exercise and time. Please only apply if you’re able to provide them that. They do shed - would not be good with anyone with allergies. As with all of our puppy adoptions, we require a 6 week obedience class with a certified trainer/facility. This is non negotiable. Vet and personal references, home visit required.
