Welcome Fellow Animal Lovers...to our seventh edition of “Crazy About Pets in Fulton & Montgomery Counties & Beyond”

Brownie

Well this one sure took some serious effort to get out. Since last year, I have obtained a NYS real estate license, and Mike and I, together with Char and Steve Brown of the Garden Bug just put on a wonderful pet adoption event and vendor fair that was months in the making. So to those who thought this would be out earlier, I apologize. I hope you will find it was worth the wait. As usual, we hope this serves as a vehicle to inspire people to adopt, volunteer, foster or donate. There is such a great need, anything anyone can do to help is greatly appreciated. We are fortunate to have an incredible network of rescues, shelters and people working so hard in our area to help homeless pets find homes. This magazine focuses on bringing to light all of the wonderful shelters and rescues in our area that we can possibly fit into each issue. We do realize that there are many more out there who do the same. Feel free to contact us and tell us about them and we will do our best to put them in a future issue. Every single business who has taken out Mike & Linda Palmieri Tobie an ad in this magazine is a partner in helping to bring about a match for a cat or dog waiting patiently. In this issue, we tried something different. Knowing just how many pets there are waiting in shelters and rescues That face...it gets us every time! for YOU to notice them, we decided to try getting their names, photos and information out there. We worked hard to get This dog is such a character. a sponsor for each shelter we usually feature and added a few more as well. We are thrilled to say we had a truly good This is Tobie..one of our six pets. response from local businesses. We were able to add 16 pages to this issue and feature a lot of pets in need of forever He brings joy to our lives every day! homes on these pages! It is important to understand that there may be some dogs and cats who have already been adopted by the time you fall in love with their photo on these pages. No worries...any of the rescues on these pages can help match you with the perfect pet for your situation. Give one of these shelters/rescues a call, stop by for a visit or consider volunteering or donating to any of them, they will be so appreciative. Please let our advertisers know you saw their ad on these pages, they deserve kudos for their part in bringing this magazine to publication. We would like to thank every one of you who submitted an article or helped with this in any way. Enjoy!

Thank you for picking up this issue of Crazy About Pets Magazine!

On the Cover: Bo, from the Regional Animal Shelter (recently adopted) with his two foster siblings, Tango & Athena

Bo was my first foster through Regional, 6th foster in general. I was a new volunteer when he came in to the shelter and he had my heart from day 1. He was a stressed out mess. I did what I could with him, took him out for walks, did a few hikes with him but was thrilled when he was able to get into our rehab program. He worked so hard to get to a better place so when he was finally adopted, it was like Christmas! And then he was returned and my heart just broke. My husband agreed to let him come stay with us instead of going back to the shelter. The first night was a bit rough! Like barking all night rough. But we quickly figured out that silence worries him so leaving a radio on was a nice easy fix. He wasn’t perfect in the crate but the radio definitely helped. Bo was the ultimate snuggler. If you were on the couch or in bed, he wanted to be under the blankets with you and didn’t care if you stayed there all day. He always had the most pitiful look on his face, there was no staying mad at him or telling him he couldn’t be on the couch with you. Bo is just an overall great dog who is a wonderful breed advocate. If you could see him with kids, your heart just melts. Jen Lacosse

Are You Ready to Adopt?

Happily, at the time of this printing, Bo has been adopted by a lovely family in Chatham where he has 2 boys to play with and love on as well as a stay at home mom :) Updates on him are very positive!

If you experience a problem after your own vet’s actual hours, you can call on a pet emergency clinic in the area. Here are a few.

Please let us know what you think of our magazine by emailing Linda@creativityunleashed.org We would love to hear your adoption story and may be able to use it in a future issue to inspire others to do the same.

Parasite Prevention for Your Pet

Dr. Crystal Murray, DVM owner of

5877 Route 30 South, Amsterdam, New York 12010

(518) 843-2882 Dr. Murray graduated from Cornell University Veterinary School in 1996. She did a brief stint as an emergency veterinarian before settling into a career with small animals, mostly dogs and cats. Crystal lived in NJ prior to moving up to NY in 2006. She bought the closed Mohawk Valley Veterinary Hospital in 2010. Crystal redesigned the building to improve its utility as a veterinary hospital, and supervised its complete renovation. She opened Country Valley Veterinary Clinic a few months after this. In her spare time, Crystal is the mother of two wonderful children, and the guardian of two dogs, four cats, one horse and too many chickens.

It’s that time of the year again – spring has sprung! With the warm weather that we all welcome, the various bugs that we are not so pleased to see emerge. It’s time to make sure your pet is on the correct antiparasitic products. We recommend that all cats and dogs are given monthly flea control, regardless of their life style. If your pet goes outside, tick control is also essential. Please be aware that many products that are safe and effective for dogs are NOT safe for our feline friends. If you own a kitty, be sure you are using a cat safe product! For dogs, I like the oral flea and tick preventatives best. These are easy to give, very effective, and safe when used appropriately. In addition to preventing fleas & ticks, the oral products also prevent mange of all types! At CVVC, we carry Credelio, because in my opinion it is the safest of the oral products. If your dog is prone to seizures, however, the oral products are not recommended. In this case we will recommend either a topical drop (I prefer Vectra), or a collar that gets the job done. The only collar we can recommend is Seresto (but make sure it’s the real deal, and not a knock off!). For cats, I really like the new topical Revolution Plus. Cats are very sensitive, so please make sure you use only a high-quality cat approved product. The Seresto collar is also an appropriate option for cats. As the mosquitos hatch out of the leaf litter, heartworm disease is back on the horizon. All dogs should be on heartworm prevention either year-round, or at least when the mosquitos are out. Although there are numerous safe and effective forms of heartworm prevention, my personal favorite is Interceptor Plus for dogs. In addition to preventing heartworm disease, Interceptor Plus also prevents those debilitating intestinal parasites; roundworms, hook worms, and whipworms. For cats, Revolution Plus will treat the worst of their intestinal parasites, roundworms and hookworms, as well as fleas, ticks, heartworms, and ear mites. Although there are other parasites, I care most about those that can spread disease to us (fleas, ticks, roundworms and hookworms), as well as those that are more likely to be lethal for your dog (heartworms and whipworms). Please ask your veterinarian about how to detect other parasites and how to prevent those nasty little critters in your environment. By Dr. Crystal Murray, DVM

ITʼS NOT ENOUGH TO BE IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME. YOU HAVE TO BE THE RIGHT PERSON IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME. -T. HARV EKER -

Is it possible to have a great The dog whose vacation with entire universe your dog? was turned from

Charlie

bad to great in an instant!

Wrinkles, Now Charlie, is finally living the life every dog dreams of thanks to the couple who saved him and have since adopted him. - with Beth Snyder

Beth Snyder and her husband John Snyder live in Canajoharie, NY. Beth is the owner of Snyder’s Printing and Creative Design and John is the owner of Boiling Pot Photography. One night after dinner in town, they were driving home and something awful happened... THE FOLLOWING IS AN EXCERPT AS WRITTEN ON BETH YACOBUCCI SNYDER’S FACEBOOK PAGE THE DAY AFTER (reprinted w/permission)

HEART BREAKING NEWS: They say that God puts you in the right place at a certain time for many reasons. Well I guess you could say last night was my time. As my husband and I were coming home from Dinner traveling down Cliff Street in Canajoharie, I screamed for my him to stop the car. I couldn't believe my eyes as I watched someone throw a dog out the 2nd story window of a building. I didn't even think of anything else but saving his life as I ran from the car scooped him up and cradled him like a baby. I remember this woman coming down and saying "Oh he fell", oh no he didn't fall, I watched you throw him. Get the hell away from me and this dog. I got in the car and we drove to the police station. Still cradling this poor little guy. Full fleas and all. Looking up at me like thank you. He just cuddled there on my lap trying not to move in all his pain. Finally the police officer was able to reach the SPCA who was in touch with the vet and we took him to Glen Animal Hospital. I waited till he got settled in and told him with sobs that I would check on him today. I have never in my life been more devastated in seeing such horror of any human that could do something like this in my life. But there is justice for this and she has been arrested. As of this time of this article, the case is still pending an outcome Today we find that "Wrinkles" has a broken Femur, broken front paw and 5 other bones in his leg. There are many operation forth coming for this little guy....please say a little prayer for him as he will need many surgeries and more health care to get healthy.

Wrinkles “now Charlie” made sure Beth knew how thankful he was to her with his kisses when she came to visit him at the shelter.

Charlie was put in the care of the Montgomery County SPCA, his surgery was done and he was then put in foster care to mend. All the while, Beth could not stop thinking about Wrinkles. She was of course drawn to him after the horrifying incident and knew that the right home for that boy would be with her and John and their own 2 dogs. She immediately put in an application to adopt him. Beth had to be patient as there were other applications to go through and of course no decisions could be made while the investigation continued and Wrinkles was healing. Beth visited Wrinkles at the shelter and expressed her desire to adopt him, letting the staff know she felt an obligation to make sure his life would be awesome from that day forward. When he was ready to be adopted, Beth got the call that the application had been approved. Con’td on next page

Beth then went on to urge folks considering a pet to visit a local shelter and/or to consider donating to one.

Resting at his foster home

After Beth and John Adopted Wrinkles, Beth wrote this update on Facebook... WELCOME HOME SURPRISE. Good news everyone. For all of you who have been following Wrinkles, he is safe and sound with us. We have adopted him. It has taken a long time for him to heal and be ready. As you know God puts you in a place and time for reasons. Me saving him was a reason for sure. Today my son and I did a meet and greet with our Golden Bucci and our Yellow Lab Bella. Bucci is 9 he did wonderful, Bella our 5 year old she is a little jealous but she will adjust I am sure. Wrinkles is adjusting to everything. He is busy, scoping out the house. Finding everything he needs. Our house is pretty much quiet so he has been resting but at first it was quite a bit of play time. Boy can he jump like a little rabbit. I was so surprised with all the injuries he had endured. I’m sitting here wondering what night time will bring, just like a new baby. I wanted to thank everyone for following along with him, wondering what was going on.

All dressed up for his first Christmas, Charlie poses with Bucci

Charlie has fit right in! After a while Bella has figured out that Charlie is going nowhere and they are frequently seen like this!

On his first Birthday Beth updated her Facebook page with this info:

He has followed her around (Bella) like his mommy since the day we brought him home. One day out of the blue she just gave in. Now just look at these two. Charlie is now one year old and was given a Birthday party! He has been with us four months. As you know he came from a terrible situation. Look at him now. From the day I saved him, I knew he belonged with us. Believe me, he has been a lot of work. But he didn’t know any different. He was never taught. He is so loving. Still tests us every day. Charlie enjoying his birthday treats! But with love and patience he has learned so much. Happy 1st Birthday Charlie! Charlie gets into “trouble” often: He has chewed so many things & pooped & peed on the floor. But he is loved unconditionally - he is such a love bug, says Beth. “If

Bella taught Charlie how to help mom work.

I had to do it again, I definitely would without a doubt.” - Beth Yacobucci Snyder

Working to better the lives of shelter animals Hugs From Henry Inc. is 100% volunteer and 100% of the funds go to animals in need. Our story is sad yet sweet. We began in Malone, NY where a sweet, old beagle named Henry was discovered. After years of living in an outdoor shelter and being passed off as someone not so special, Henry struck some luck. He found a family who took him out of the cold, and gave him a warm home with many warm hearts. Today, Henry lives an extraordinary life. To some, he may seem like just another ordinary dog, a rescue dog at that, but to us he is our inspiration.

It is our hope that Henry’s journey will inspire others to help his shelter brothers and sisters throughout NY State. Henry wants to give hugs and help to all of his friends left behind. He so deeply wishes that his four legged friends will all find luck and happiness like he did. However, in the meantime, his story will be the inspiration to raise funds to help improve the shelters of his friends who are still patiently waiting for help. Henry never forgot where he came from and wants to “paw” it forward. 100% of the proceeds go directly to aid shelter pets by improving their living conditions, sponsoring adoption fees especially for active or veteran service men and women, and much more.

HUGO

Hugo came to our rescue after not just being hit by a car, but his foot was caught in the rim, ripping it clear off. Upon arrival he had surgery and he is just as happy as a clam now, just less one foot. This is what his foster mom has to say about him: Hugo is a big love bug who loves to cuddle, chew on his toys, and generally just chill out. He is very attentive and calm/submissive. His stamina is good but somewhat limited by his abbreviated leg. He gets around just fine, but cannot do long walks. On-leash, he is very strong and will pull when he sees something that interests him (of course this could be corrected by using a gentle learder harness). He moves best when he is off-leash in a fenced yard, able to move 2 yrs old 6-7 yrs old freely at his own pace without being restrained in his loping speed by Pitbull Mix Pitbull the leash. Shelter Dog from Out of the Pits, Inc. becomes a Sector K9 Detection Dog

This is really cool!

While planning out this magazine I always ask if anyone has a story of interest. Cyd Cross, the president of Out of the Pits, Inc. sent me information on Randall, now Maverick. Cyd knew early on that Randall, a pitbull she had brought into the rescue, was a dog that needed a “job” to do. Randall was one of the dogs that had been fostered at my son’s home in Broadalbin through Out of the Pits, Inc. by volunteer Brittany (Brower). Later, he was also fostered by Chelsea and Kristen, of Out of the Pits Inc. as well. Kristen took him to therapy classes where he earned his CGC (Canine Good Citizen). He was also ready to pass the Therapy Dog test but before that could happen he was chosen by Sector K-9 to train for police work. Sector K9 partners with Animal Farm Foundation, Inc. out of New York . Animal Farm Foundation has a grant that provides police departments with K-9s at no cost to serve communities and helps save lives. Erich from Animal Farm is the person who tested Randall to see if he had enough talent to become a K9. He felt initially Randall was “too well behaved “ to have the drive needed to qualify. Once he actually tested him he said he was a “ rock star “. Then he was off to training. Sector K9 takes in shelter dogs to become K-9 Detection dogs who search for narcotics. Wes Keeling started this program to help change the negative stereotypes associated with the Pitbull breed. Since starting in 2016 Wes has sent out more than 40 dogs into duty around the country. Randall is good with other dogs and all people which makes him extra special for his job . Having come from a local raid he’s now catching people like the ones responsible for him and the other dogs in the raid. I did a google search on Maverick (Randall’s new name) and was able to find a video of his handler on TV discussing the program. It was very interesting. Ben Russel from NBC5 in Dallas-Fort Worth spoke with Maverick the K-9 Detection Dogs Handler, Corey Yarbrough and Wes Keeling. Corey said Maverick is now doing fantastic at his role of police dog in Arkansas. His energy level may have been too much to be able to assimilate into a normal forever family, but he is truly cut out for his role now and does great as a trained police dog.

Maverick “on the job”

All in all the training took about 7 weeks. K-9 Deputy Corey Yarbrough spent two weeks in Texas with Maverick doing extensive training. Ben asked Wes Keeling if he thought Maverick realized just how far he had come? He said “Yes, he believes Maverick and other dogs like this understand that this is a “second chance at life” and he thinks Maverick may feel more appreciated than he ever has in life. Says Cyd, “Randall’s situation was different from most of the dogs chosen for K9 work as he was in foster homes and was not in danger of euthanasia he just needed to fulfill his amazing potential. A huge thank you to Animal Farm for the work they do helping shelter dogs and to Sector K9 for realizing the potential of Pitbull type dogs to be working in the world of law enforcement! Thank you to the fosters who loved him and are very excited to see him working and helping people in Arkansas. Randall with his foster sister Traditionally, dogs come from other countries to do police work, but Wes realized that if he could channel energy from local shelter dogs into this, then that would not only alleviate the high cost of obtaining these dogs (up to $20,000) but also save shelters dogs lives as well. If you would like to know more about this program please go to www.SectorK9.com or check them out on Facebook @SectorK9 You can find out more about the wonderful things happening at Animal Farm Foundation at www.animalfarmfoundation.org or on Facebook @animalfarmfoundation. Dallyʻs Hope 4 Paws Rescue 501(c)(3) not for profit

A new rescue was formed in the area last year called Dally’s Hope 4 Paws Rescue Penny Ross, who resides in Hagaman, NY is the founder of this rescue. Penny started the rescue in memory of her daughter Dallas who passed in October of 2015.

In Penny’s own words... “Dallas loved her pets!! We are an all breed dog rescue. I have worked with rescues in AL and VA for over 3 years saving

the homeless, vetting and loving until a FUREVER home comes along. If you see something of interest please let me know, I have volunteer transport that brings dogs 1200 miles several times a month. I have many years experience in shelter work, fostering dogs, trapping the lost and giving the utmost care. Every dog will be in home fostered, worked with on housebreaking, crate training, interacting with people and other dogs and all proper and necessary vetting will be done. All dogs will be adopted under contract once a complete interview/ vet check and home check are done by me. A reasonable adoption fee will be charged to help cover cost of vetting on every animal. I receive many calls to take local dogs that people have to give up and will consider taking them in to rehome them, providing they get along with other dogs. Inquire on any dog on Petfinder at dallyshope27@yahoo.com On many Saturday afternoons, you may find Penny and a group of dedicated volunteers at the Amsterdam, NY PetSmart with a few of her dogs looking for forever homes. Penny relies on donations from generous donors to continue to do the work she does to save these dogs from possible euthanasia. Many of them are saved from Death Row when the shelter workers and volunteers arrange with Penny to get them to New York via transport. Check Facebook and PetFinder for more information and updates on dogs coming and those who have been adopted.

Penny with two rescued pups she picked up on the last leg of transport in Oneonta, NY.

Some dogs come via paid transport at $100 or more per dog. I arrange each leg of their journey to get herer. The volunteer drivers Penny is pictured here with some of her own dogs are all everyday people using their own and those she fosters at her home in Hagaman, NY vehicles, their time and their gas to get the animals from point A to point B. My transported dogs use approx. 16 legs to get here (meaning every 1-1 1/2 hours dogs are traded to the next driver). There is also a Volunteer foster that will keep the dogs overnight until the next morning when they usually hit the road again by 7am. Some drivers will take 2-3 legs of the journey to make it happen - now that is pure dedication right there! There are volunteer monitors during the entire trip that are in constant contact with each person and keep the group inTammy Leone Palmateer, Penny Ross, Cookie the dog & formed of the ETA of each leg of the journey Diane Gotham Palmateer are pictured here. The Galway Family Insurance as well as help with any issues we may have Agency in Galway, NY held a fundraiser for the month of March for Dally’s Hope 4 Paws Rescue. Penny wishes to thank them and everyone who along the way. donated, it is much appreciated. Transport is a major part of rescue! 10 - CRAZY ABOUT PETS in Fulton & Montgomery Counties & Beyond Seventh Edition

Dally’s Hope 4 Paws Rescue brings pets up on transport from Alabama. Penny also takes in local dogs when possible and finds home for them. Here are a few photos of the dogs coming up on transport in June. Please contact Dally’s Hope 4 Paws Rescue to find out about other pets coming and watch Facebook for photos and details. They will be 11 weeks old when they arrive here. Their Dad is a Bully Mix an their mom is a Lab.

7 yrs old Jack Russel Mix Penny says...Maude is sweet as pie with people, about 18 pounds, NO OTHER PETS. she has had a rough life looks like lots of breeding. She spends her time here tied out during day with her bed and UMBRELLA for shade when I am working outside, I take her on rides in car (she loves) when I go places but she has to remain crated (she has XL crate) She doesnt bark, she loves people - she is house trained. WOULD ANYONE LIKE TO FOSTER HER? she is available for adoption, up to date on shots spayed as well. She would really make a great companion for someone!

True Love Ways

- For the love of dogs ❤

By LInda Palmieri - With Mark Robokoff, Brian & Jodi Cafarella, Mike & Frankie Page

This story is not about Facebook, but I would be remiss If I did not mention that I have been inspired more than once by things I have seen on Facebook: In 2017, Mark Zuckerberg changed the mission statement of Facebook to include the words “bring the world closer together” Let’s admit, there are positive and negative aspects of Facebook itself and all that it entails For me, I choose to use it to keep up with friends and to spread the word about homeless pets through our Facebook pages @creativityunleashedamsterdam and @crazyaboutpetsmagazine Once in a while (actually more often than not) I stumble upon a post that someone wrote that causes me to need a few tissues! Check out the wonderful words written by the owner of AK BarK in Alaska, Mark Robokoff. (shared here w/permission from AK BARK’s Facebook page). Mark’s post was shared on the Facebook page of LaVilla Dog Works on the same night I was looking for some words to describe the beautiful relationship between Lucca and his Mom and Dad - Brian and Jodi Cafarella and Jenny and her Mom and Dad, Mike and Frankie Page.

Mark’s Whippet McKenzie resting with her sister Macie

Lucca’s mom and dad, Brian and Jodi Cafarella are originally from Amsterdam. They are friends of ours from way back and in my case Brian was also a colleague and I have gotten more than a bit of inspiration from him as he is a talented Graphic Designer as well. Brian and Jodi adopted Lucca 13 years ago. They call Rockport, Massachusetts their home now and I have personally kept up with their many adventures via Facebook with their beloved dog Lucca. I don’t know if Brian and Jodi ever pulled Lucca in a wagon, but I know for sure he had many great adventures, inspired many people in Rockport (he was famous there!) and for sure he gave Brian and Jodi the best 13 years of unconditional love they could ask for.

Special Thanks to

Mark Robokoff, Owner of AK Bark

12 - CRAZY ABOUT PETS in Fulton & Montgomery Counties & Beyond Seventh Edition 2019

Sadly, Lucca passed away in April 2019 and Brian and Jodi put their loss into word on Facebook. I cried for them, as I know the pain, as do so many of you. I always say to those who have lost a pet “Remember, you are BETTER for having loved them”.

cont’d on next page

Here In Brian’s words, he describes how he and Jodi feel about losing their beloved dog. (shared w/permission from Brian Cafarella’s Facebook page)

WITH A HEAVY HEART we said goodbye to our sweet boy LUCCA as he PASSED AWAY unexpectedly in our arms on his way to the RAINBOW BRIDGE on Friday at 2 PM. Lucca was a bit of a Celebrity in Rockport, and he made friends with many celebrities in Devon McCourty (New England Patriots), Frances McDormand (Movie Actress), David Robinson (Rock & Roll Hall of Famer from the Cars), Sam Smith (Recording Artist), just to name a few. Lucca loved Clamming and his trips to Kenny’s Lobster Shack for his nightly salmon treat. Lucca was featured on the Cape Ann Animal Aid Annual Santa Paws Poster, the Boston Globe, and even had a cameo in a German Film shot here 6 years ago. Our hearts are broken and the house has lost it’s glow, but in time the memories that we shared with him will bring us joy.

Another family had a great loss this year as well. Mike and Frankie Page, of Johnstown, NY and their other four furry children lost their “Jenny”. Mike and Frankie give so much of their time to help homeless pets find homes, while being the best mom and dad ever to their own pets and inspiring their friends and family to do the same.

Jenny Page ❖ RIP ❖

There was a story about Jenny in a past issue of our magazine go to: www.issuu.com/creativityunleashed Nov. 2016 - Third Edition - page 12 Other stories have also been written by Frankie and Mike Page over the past few years: Check them out in our earlier issues to read more about Frankie & Mike and their incredible bonds with their own dogs as well as every shelter dog they are matched with. •) Story of Shelter Dog “Joy” Page 18 - Third Edition 2016 •) Frankie talks about the Buddy Program at Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter - Foster Magazine page 31 & also reprinted on page 29 of our Sixth Edition - June 2018 If you are experiencing the pain of losing a pet, talk about it with your friends and loved ones and consider reaching out for professional help. See our article from the June 2018 Sixth Edition of Crazy About Pets - Page 8 for more information on area groups who can help. Do you have a pet who has brought joy to your life and want to share a photo or story with us? We will do what we can to print your photos/stories in future issues. “Because we Love Pets and we know YOU do too!”

Lucca Cafarella ❖ RIP ❖

Send your photos to linda@creativityunleashed.org

Here, in Frankie’s own words is an excerpt from the story of Jenny, page 12 in our Third Issue - Nov. 2016 “Jenny brought a light and liveliness into our home that had been missing. She immediately became the bossy little sister to our other rescue dog Jackson who had also been suffering from the loss of the only companion he ever knew and loved – the gal that raised him – Miss Angel. With the addition of this little lady a lot changed in the Page household almost immediately. No dogs on the furniture rule – gone! Jenny ruled the roost and owned all of our hearts, canine and human alike. Having survived her rough beginnings, being kept in a dark, poorly ventilated room in an overcrowded crate and being diagnosed with a severe case of giardia we committed to give her a life that she never could have imagined, full of love with the best of care and free of wants.”

We are a husband and wife team who happen to love pets! We have six pets, four cats and two dogs and each one is a rescue and has a special place in our hearts. Over seven years ago, we had an idea - to produce placemats that would highlight shelter pets in the area that are in need of adoption. This would ensure that many people saw them each day and give the pets a great chance to be noticed and adopted. We currently have our mats in many restaurants and feature two local shelters. The idea came about to start a magazine called Crazy About Pets from our desire to highlight even more area shelters and get important information out to pet lovers in our area. We have fabulous contributors who write articles pertaining to topics important to all pet lovers. We are thankful to everyone involved and appreciate the advertisers and restaurant owners who have believed in us all these years and continue to do so. Call (518) 842-6532 w/questions!

Super sweet and friendly! Likes playing w/his toys, he knows how to sit for a treat. Laid back guy, would love to watch TV w/you.

- Amsterdam, NY

For over a 100 years dogs and cats in Amsterdam have gotten plenty of love from the wonderful staff and volunteers at the Montgomery County SPCA as they await their forever families. The MCSPCA cares for unwanted, abused, abandoned and neglected animals, including hoarding situations. While they provide sanctuary for companion animals, their work goes far beyond simply housing, feeding and loving these creatures. The MCSPCA’s programs and services include a low cost feline spay and neuter program, a foster care network, food for your pet, micro chipping for your pet, investigating cruelty and neglect complaints, housing animals from cruelty and neglect investigations, animal legislation advocacy, education and more. Got Barn Cat – The MCSPCA will provide fully vetted feral cats to those who have a barn for their shelter and will feed the cats. The MC-SPCA expects to break ground on the new shelter building within a year. The new shelter will not only provide all of the services they do today for the homeless animals, but will also provide services to the community such as: veterinary care, low cost spay/neuter and shots, doggie daycare, pet boarding, education and much more. Contact the shelter if you would like to contribute to our Capital Campaign or visit the website www.mc-spca.org . We at the MCSPCA are proud of the difference we make in the lives of both the animals and the individuals to whom we provide assistance. Shelter Hours: Mon, Wed-Sat. 12pm to 4pm; Closed Tues. & Sun.

Upstate Underdog Rescue, Inc.

Upstate Underdog Rescue (a 501c3 charity) works to reduce the number of dogs euthanized at upstate NY shelters through fostering & supported adoptions Underdog Rescue believes that Every Dog Has A Superpower!

We are a non breed specific rescue for at-risk dogs in the capital region of New York State. We focus on helping dogs who are having a hard

time adjusting to life in our local, upstate NY shelters. Through supported fostering and force-free training, we allow Underdogs to decompress and expand their world at their own pace. Our SMILE program focuses on dogs who are still at the shelter and in need of extra reasons to smile while they wait to be adopted. Through this program, we provide enrichment activities, trips, and special treats for special shelter dogs.

Force-free training is a cornerstone of UUR. We believe that aversive methods, tools, and equipment should never be used in the training, care or behavior modification of any animal. We embrace forcefree training not only because it works, but because it fosters a strong, positive human-canine bond.

EARL

Upstate Underdog Rescue is a proud Best Friends Network Partner.

or go to: www.upstateunderdogrescue.org to find out more!

Adoptable Underdog Earl’s life goals are pretty simple. He’s making lots of progress on them in his foster home, but he really wants his very own, forever human so that he can truly perfect his “lap dog” skills. If you’ve got a couch and a lap big enough for a 70 pound dog who loves to cuddle you should meet Earl! Earl has some basic obedience under his collar. He does well with dog-savvy kids and female dogs. He could probably live with dog-savvy cats, too. He needs a home without male dogs. Got a life that Earl would fit into? Contact us at www.upstateunderdogrescue.org. to set up a meeting! You can also find out more about our foster-to-adopt process by contacting that same email address!

HAL

If looks could speak, Adoptable Underdog Hal would have already written a book in his short life. The first few chapters would have some sad and painful parts, but they would also be full of the story of wonderful people coming together to help a terrific dog. Thanks to The Mr. Mo Project, Hal made his way to us. Thanks to all our UUR supporters, Hal got the care he needed to become healthy and strong. Thanks to his amazing foster parents, Hal is ready for the next chapters of his life. ❤ Hal’s a BIG fan of other dogs and would love to share his home with the right canine friend. We aren’t sure about cats but suspect he could live with a dog-savvy cat after careful introductions and monitoring. He thrives in patient, structured environments and is looking for a family who will support him as he grows into his Superpowers. Hal is still learning his manners, so he’s looking for a home without small children. Hal has graduated from basic obedience class. He and his foster mom worked SO hard and made SO much progress! We are SO PROUD of them!!

We keep each dog in foster until we are sure that he or she is ready to become part of a new, successful human/dog pack. Because we do that, we really know each dog, and we will work with prospective adoptive dog parents to make certain that it is a good match. Few things are sadder than an adoption that fails, and we want to make sure that neither you nor the dog has to go through a failure! If you would like to be contacted when new adoptable dogs are added, please use the form on our website to join our mailing list.

www.upstateunderdogrescue.org

Below are two SMILE Dogs - these dogs are getting extra attention from us while they wait at the shelter for their forever home.

MARTHA

Martha is a petite, mature pitbull type dog who just melts your heart. You can tell life hasn't been particularly kind to her in the past, but--after an initial getting-to-know-you warm up period--Martha is a trusting, loving girl who enjoys belly rubs and long, meandering walks where she can sniff as much as she wants. Martha's eyesight isn't great so she's looking for a patient, calm home where she can settle in at her own pace. Her forever home also needs to be pet and child free. Martha is waiting for her humans at Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. If you're interested in learning more about her email BAE@mohawkhumane.org.

Even if it’s not too hot outside, it is TOO HOT INSIDE YOUR CAR!!

LENNOX

Lennox is a smart, beautiful two-year-old pitbull type dog with a gorgeous smile and a zest for life. While she's been a SMILE dog, Lennox has shown us that she enjoys car rides, enrichment activities (like ScentWork), and hanging out with her adult human friends. Lennox's enthusiasm is too much for young children, so her forever home needs to be adult-only. She also needs to be the only dog in her forever home. Lennox is waiting at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society for dog-savvy humans who will help her find her Superpowers. If you're interested in learning more about her, email BAE@mohawkhumane.org.

Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car for any period of time! ON A WARM DAY, the temperature in a car can exceed 120˚ in a matter of minutes - even with the windows partially open. Your pet can quickly suffer brain damage or die from heatstroke or suffocation. If you see an animal in a car exhibiting signs of heat stress, call your local animal care and control agency or police department immediately! Charlie’s Food Pantry - Story by Kim Pacheco

I started the Behavioral Health Pet Food Pantry at St. Mary’s Healthcare in November of 2017. So many of our patients have pets at home that they love. Their pets are a source of comfort and support, and many times are the only friends or family they have. Some patients have told us that their pets are a reason to get up every day, and focus on something other than themselves. Pets teach us about responsibility, and best of all, offer unconditional love and companionship to us. But oftentimes, our patients struggle to care for their pet due to lack of financial resources and basic pet care knowledge.

Kim says “My amazing work family had this sign made in honor of my beloved dog Charlie”

I have been approached many times by Behavioral Health staff, asking what we can do to help these patients to buy food, litter, treats, and sometimes medical care, for their pets. Sometimes these pet owners go without things for themselves so they can feed their pets. Being a HUGE animal lover myself, I wanted to do something to help our patients take care of their pets. When we are able to provide assistance with pet care, we are helping our patients to stay healthy and lessen the stress of being unable to care properly for their pets.

Kim with Charlie

So I reached out to Behavioral Health staff to see how big the need is and asked if they would be willing to donate on an ongoing basis to buy food etc, for a pet food pantry for the patients. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. So many of my coworkers donated food, treats, litter, toys and money to get things started, and they continue to do so. As of December 31, 2018, $1085.00 in monetary donations have been made, in addition to countless bags of food, treats, toys and litter!!!!

I volunteer at Ayres Animal Shelter, and they are a big supporter of the pet food pantry, donating dog and cat food, treats, toys, dog clothing, leashes, collars, and bowls whenever they can. Ayres has also been able to assist us with taking in animals that had to be surrendered when their owners could no longer care for them. I have a closet that serves as the space for the pantry, and its right around the corner from my office, so it’s easy to access when someone needs supplies. We have about 15 customers who use the pantry on a regular basis, and many who have used it once or twice. They are all so grateful for the help, and usually share stories about their pets with me. It’s been an amazing experience! I am blessed to have SO many animal loving co-workers, friends and family, who have supported this from the beginning. I would not be able to do it without them. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. ~ Kim

Would you like to help by donating cash or food to the pantry? If so please contact Kim Pacheco on Facebook CRAZY ABOUT PETS in Fulton & Montgomery Counties & Beyond Seventh Edition 2019 - 21

MAURICE

Hound/Saluki Mix 2 years old • Male

Maurice is neutered, vaccinated and heartworm negative. He is a funny guy, you can watch him run like a puppy and kick his front feet out and romp around the yard, he will invite other dogs to play with him. He enjoys being out of the shelter and in a home with other dogs and a fenced yard to play in. He gets along with well with other dogs too!

COMET

Lab Pittie Mix 1.5 years old • Male

Donations are so appreciated. Please go to our website to find out how you can help us help them!

Comet is very very active and has no aggression. He loves to chase the ball but is learning how to return it. He can run fast! Comet is too active for young children, he would knock them over due to his energy. He loves other dogs and loves to play. Comet really loves to be squirted by the hose!

ABIGAIL

Shepherd/Hound Mix 1 year old • Female

Abigail plays well and loves to run with the other dogs. Since she has had a life with limited food and no doggie toys were part of it, she can be a bit protective of food and toys. SHE IS AN AWESOME SNUGGLER! I believe she would make an excellent agility dog due to her temperment, speed, agile moves and desire to learn.

How do you start the process to adopt from Good Shepherd K9 Rescue? AFTER A COMPLETED APPLICATION WHICH CAN BE FOUND ON OUR WEBSITE - www.K9Adopt.com - IS SENT TO APPROPRIATE E-MAIL ADDRESS, HOME VISIT COMPLETED AND APPROVED BY OUR VOLUNTEERS. IN THE BEGINNING: Our President and Founder, Michelle Lautman, responded to the need in our community of stray and feral cats with nowhere to go, sick, dying, in need of help. Using her own home since 2004, she has hosted hundreds of needy cats and kittens to health and forever homes. Until May of 2016 this was a welcome service to this city. Unfortunately zoning forbids this type of use in a residential zone. All of the adoptable cats were sent on to new homes or rescues/shelters. The unadoptable, felv/fiv positive, elderly, medical care cases, and behavior cases were personally adopted by Michelle. Not one cat was euthanized in the process of abiding by city code. We are still helping people help stray, feral, and owned cats by transporting to a low-cost spay/neuter clinic and sharing information and resources even though there is a constant and ever growing need for more hands on care. The few groups that can help in Fulton County are bursting at the seams and have neither time, space, or funds to help the really sick street cats. Everyone is doing their best. Our focus has turned to fundraising. It was extremely cost effective using an existing home where the bills were already being paid for. The burden to produce enough funds to even go to contract on a property in a rescue friendly community close enough to continue being of help to the cats of Gloversville is a difficult one. We have a huge fan base, but most are the folks we have helped that had and have no resources of their own. We need you. We need your talents . We need grant writers. We need donations towards our building fund. We need tons of prayers, not for us, but for the stray and feral cat population that will continue to grow. If you can help in any way at all, please contact:

Regional Animal Shelter is very proud to announce that we are in the process of reincorporating as a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. This change will allow us to assist our county law enforcement with investigating and prosecuting animal abuse and cruelty cases, as well as bringing the opportunity for much needed resources for these investigations. Over the next several months we will be transitioning operations from Regional Animal Shelter to the Fulton County Regional SPCA. What does this change mean for Regional, the current animals in our custody and those yet to come through our doors? We can assure the community that all animals, both present and future, will continue to receive the highest quality of care that you have come to know from our team and we will remain the same volunteer run, no kill shelter. We will continue to provide quality services to the City of Gloversville and continue to provide education and support to the members of our community. FIX THE EDGES HERE SO THE

Is it possible to have a great vacation with your dog?

to adopted Ayres Memorial Animal YES! according Shelter dog Elissa and her Mom and Dad! - Story by Jennette Nare

Jeremy and Jennette Nare with adopted dog Elissa, who waited 2 years for her forever family to find her!

Elissa enjoyed being a Bark Ranger at Acadia National Park and equally loves camping with her mom and dad too!

When my husband and I got married 4 years ago we discovered our love of tent camping in the Adirondacks. With so many incredible campgrounds in our own backyard the camping bug caught on quickly. Our Dutch Shepherd, Oriana, accompanied us from day 1 and loved every aspect of camping: the water, the sunshine, the campfire, and the constant snacking. Three years after we adopted Oriana, we fell in love with this itty bity Pitbull while I was volunteering at Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter. We ended up adopting Elissa in October of 2016. Elissa and Ori were best friends until Ori’s untimely passing in March of 2018. While my husband and I camped in the Adirondacks consistently, we wondered if we could explore more with Elissa now that we only had one dog. That’s when I stumbled upon the Camping and Hiking with Dogs community on Facebook. People posted all of their adventures with their dogs in breathtaking locations all around the world. One of the places that kept popping up on the community was Acadia National Park in Maine. Acadia is a gorgeous park located in the southeast part of Maine. It’s like a combination of Cape Cod and the Adirondacks and we instantly knew we had to take Elissa. I’d posted a few questions to the people online and they graciously offered advice on places to go and things to do. In the beginning of August 2018, we made the 12 hour journey north to spend 9 days in “the most dog friendly national park of the United States”. In preparation for our trip, I purchased a new Ruffwear harness for Elissa and made sure her collar information was updated too. I laminated all of her shot records and brought along her veterinary folder with us just in case something happened. Those stayed in my backpack everywhere we went just in case we were asked for proof of vaccinations (which most campgrounds require anyway). We packed bowls, food, toys, and several baggies of her favorite Lazy Dog snacks. She’s a snuggler and typically snuggles into my sleeping bag with me, but I brought extra blankets and a towel in case she went swimming and wasn’t dry enough to get in my sleeping bag at night. While in Acadia there are practically limitless things to do. Acadia has a large loop to drive with several parking lots throughout to pull off and enjoy different sights. There are hiking trails, restaurants, nature cruises, coffee shops, mountaintop vistas, seashores, lighthouses, and several roadside lobster shanties. Dogs were

26 - CRAZY ABOUT PETS in Fulton & Montgomery Counties & Beyond Seventh Edition

not allowed on beaches, which is a typical rule regardless of where you are. Everywhere we went there were water bowls and so many people were obsessed with how adorable she is, they asked to take her picture. Bar Harbor, which is at the northern part of the park, allows dogs in almost every restaurant and store. Acadian Sightseeing and Nature Cruises allows well behaved dogs on board for their 2 hour tour as well. We even got up at 3AM one morning to drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain and see the first sunrise to hit the United States that day. One of the first things we did when we got to Acadia was go to the Hulls Cove Visitors Center on the north part of the loop. It’s where we got our parking pass for the week and they’ve got some wonderful rangers there to answer any question you may have. I’d heard rumblings about it on the Facebook page mentioned earlier, so I decided to ask one of the rangers about a B.A.R.K. Ranger program. Essentially, they give you a checklist of things to see/do with your dog on the trail. When completed you bring back your paper and they give you a B.A.R.K. Ranger tag for their collar or harness! We filled it out, returned the paper, and kindly asked one of the rangers to come outside and “swear” Elissa in! It was pretty unique and adorable. If you were wondering about a place you could take your dog and enjoy some nature, I highly recommend Acadia. With so many different dog friendly activities and incredible sights to see, it’s the perfect place to bring your family and your pups! Before we left, my husband was already talking about the “next time we go..”

Acadia National Park (207) 288-3338 20 McFarland Hill Dr, Bar Harbor, ME 04609

www.nps.gov This is the main page for the National Park Service, type in Acacia National Park in the Search Bar. There you will find all kinds of information about visiting the park, even a video about bringing your dog!

This year, consider taking your dog/dogs with you on vacation. Elissa is proof it can be done and all of you will enjoy the moments spent together. Start by searching for dog friendly places to take your pets and then go make some memories!

Send your photos to linda@creativityunleashed.org We will choose a few to feature in our next issue to prove that people can have a great vacation with their four legged loved ones!

MEET TWO OF THE WONDERFUL DOGS CURRENTLY WAITING FOR FOREVER HOMES

LUNA

NINA

3 yrs old

3 yrs old

Spayed Female

Spayed Female

Luna is wondering why she is still available for adoption. She said she could teach you her dance moves, which are almost as graceful as a ballerina. Luna makes great facial expressions that could make anyone laugh on a gloomy day. She loves to be with people and is always polite by shaking hands. If you need a running partner, Luna is probably not your girl, but she still loves going on adventures when the weathers not too hot. Today she learned she likes to drink from the hose, and tomorrow we’ll see if she enjoys swimming. Luna is approximately 3 years old, spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and housebroken. She is looking for a home as the only pet and with at least teenage children. Luna is currently living in Schenectady and hoping she will soon find her forever home. Please contact us if interested in meeting Luna!

Call Now to Meet This Great Little Girl! She is Waiting for YOU!!

This girl is another one that has stolen our hearts, and another one that needs a very specific home. You don’t always know the true dog that lies deep down within and the trauma they may have experienced when you take them from a shelter. We do our best to give them a chance to make them the best dog they can be. Nina loves taking walks and exploring. We need to find her a home that enjoys a challenge to build that amazing rapport with her, like some of us have. Having been with us since Sept., it is very costly to keep a dog in boarding long term, and we’re hoping someone sees this smile and falls in love like we have! She is in need of a home without children or other pets. Nina is looking for someone willing to accept the challenge of creating a bond with her. Please contact us if interested in meeting Nina!

You know you could fall in love with this smile! Won’t you give her a chance at forever?

Tina graduated from the New York School of Dog Grooming in New York City. She has had her business for 28 years. Tina was a freelance writer for the Amsterdam Recorder writing the “Doggie Bag” column which, in 2008, was published into a book by the UPS store in Amsterdam. She has been on the WCSS radio talk show at various times with Sam Zurlo. For the past 8 years she has been a volunteer for our local Community Hospice. She is very active supporting the Ronald McDonald House, St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation and the Bangor Humane Society, all in Bangor, Maine.

Put a piece of newspaper (not shredded) or a puppy pee pad in the bottom of your litter box. Take a 30 gallon clear trash bag and put it inside of the box. Smooth down the inside and wrap the excess of the bag underneath the sides of the box. Line the inside of the box with 7 to 8 pieces of newspaper. Put your kitty litter on top of those newspapers. Once a day, scoop out kitty box. Then pull out only one piece of newspaper to see if kitty has urinated. If urine has gone through more than one newspaper, pull them out. Using the newspaper is especially recommended, as it will let you know if your kitty is urinating in the box and how much. Kitties that have urinary tract infections may urinate more frequently. Some will even go outside of the box. Many owners use puppy pee pads in place of the newspapers as they will hold the urine and if there’s blood in the urine you will see it. At the end of 7 days you can throw the whole garbage bag away and start over. If you use a litter brand, such as Fresh Step Kitty Litter you may be able to change the litter less. Remember, each cat should have their own box. So go ahead and Adopt A Kitty!!!!!!! Less smells keeps kitty and family happy!

Happy Summer!!!

CRAZY ABOUT PETS in Fulton & Montgomery Counties & Beyond Seventh Edition - 33

It’s Kitten Season Again!

Gina Kline with her dog Tikanni Blue

Gina is the owner of

Out of the Dog House Dog Training Hagaman, New York 12086 (518) 265-2842 and Animal Control Officer for the City of Amsterdam

As Kitten season comes around we are all faced with the choice. The choice to get a “free” kitten from Facebook or Craigslist or from the neighbor down the street or you could choose a rescue or shelter cat. I’m hoping to make your choice a little bit easier. There is no such thing as a “free” kitten and if you think that $100-$150 is too much to pay for an adoption fee let me show you something. Your “free” kittens don’t have dewormer, they don’t have distemper vaccines, they don’t have flea treatments, ear mite treatment, rabies vaccines nor are they spayed or neutered. Let’s do the math. 3 rounds of over the counter dewormer $9.00, ear mite treatment $15, one round of distemper from the vet $37 plus the $65 office visit, (three rounds is recommended) flea treatment (for ones that really work) $20 a month, rabies vaccine $47 at your vet, getting your male neutered $300-$500, getting your female spayed $300-$600. Now let’s look at the $100-$150 kitty that comes from a shelter or a reputable rescue. That fee covers deworming, at least one round of distemper, flea treatment, ear mite treatment, rabies vaccine, spay or neuter and in some cases micro chipping and testing for feline leukemia or feline aides. If your thought is “it’s going to be an indoor cat why does it need to be fixed?” Because female cats get really vocal and try everything they can to get out to find a mate. Males will mark their territory when they reach sexual maturity. Getting male urine out of your $500 speaker system or off your brand new furniture doesn’t happen! Now your asking “why do I need to get my cat vaccinated, it’s going to be an indoor cat?” First see the statement above, second rabies vaccine is required by law to any cat, dog or ferret over the age of 4 months. The biggest vector species of the rabies virus is the bat. Most domestic animals that have run ins with bats have them in their home!! Rabies is also a zoonotic and it can be spread to anyone and just about anything it comes into contact with. So the choice of the season should be adopt. Rescues and shelters get their kitties off Facebook and craigslist. They get them off the streets and from hoarders. Then they get them healthy. Most rescues are what’s called in home rescues which means that the animals are raised with their fosters family. Adopting from a shelter or rescue saves two lives.

Are You Ready to Adopt?

When adopting, you are making a commitment to care for an animal for the rest of their life—that could mean 10 to 15 years for dogs and up to 20 years for cats. As you go through lifestyle changes such as moves, the birth of children and new jobs, your animal will remain a permanent part of your life. If circumstances change, will you still be able to care for your pet?

• Owning a dog or cat costs more than the initial adoption fee.

Food, veterinary care, spaying or neutering and proper identification—that means a collar with tags and a more permanent form of ID such as microchipping—can add up.

• Time is also a factor.

Dogs benefit from several hours of exercise and companionship every day. Cats are healthiest and happiest indoors and love to be treated to energetic play sessions. If your work demands that you travel often, or if you're out of the house most days and evenings, this may not be the right time to adopt.

• It is important to consider...

whether your children, along with your resident pets, are able to accommodate the addition of a cat or dog to your household.

Which Pet Is Right for You?

Your personality and lifestyle, along with challenges such as space restrictions and amount of time spent at home, should be explored to determine what pet is right for your household. Research different breeds and ask shelter staffers for guidance—they're experts at making perfect matches! To learn more about adopting a pet go to: www.aspca.org or consult a veterinarian Please Note: The content in this magazine is for informational and educational purposes only and is not intended to replace the advice of your own veterinarian or doctor. Please consult your own veterinarian if you have specific questions about any medical or social issues your pet may have.

Fostering

? u o y r o f t i s I

Petey says give it a try! Petey is our Granddog and he has been a foster brother to countless foster dogs who have been saved and rehomed by his mom, Brittany Brower

Fostering a pet provides temporary care for shelter animals who may need to live In a home environment for a variety of reasons prior to being adopted out. Fostering is a great way for shelters and rescues to avoid overcrowding at their facilities and allows them to help more animals versus turning them away. Generally the foster’s own pets are kept away to minimize stress in the household. Some experienced fosters have been able to strike a balance between separating their fosters and socializing them with their own pets. Fosters are given essential supplies and will have access to veterinary care through the organization they are helping. Every organization has it’s own policies on fostering so check with the shelter of your choice to see what they are. Generally, fostering a pet needs to be a commitment that the whole family agrees to. As a foster you need to be able to let go when it is time for adoption, and you may be asked to attend various adoption events with your foster.

In Sept. 2017 we published a magazine about fostering It contains great stories and loads of information to help you decide if fostering is right for you.

Please become a foster parent to a homeless cat or dog...when you do, you save their life and make room for another one to be saved as well!

Gracie

Heather with Gracie, the dog who started her on this journey 15 years ago

Rising Canine Dog Training

Amsterdam, New York (518) 926-8438 heathermach@yahoo.com Founder of Rising Canine Dog Training & Co-Founder of Natural Dog Training the Next Generation She received her dog training certifications through both Animal Behavior College and Natural Dog Training She holds a Bachelor's Degree in English from Union College and a Master's Degree in Secondary Education from Union Graduate College Heather's dog training career began before she was ever a dog trainer. Teaching emotionally disturbed and Special Education students in the classroom, she developed a passion working with those that needed more. It wasn't until a 2 year old volatile border collie entered her life that she switched careers, with a mission to advocate and help the difficult dogs. From tough working breeds, to aggression and reactivity, Heather's deep passion for Canine advocacy has led her to put forth a revolutionary training model, founded by Kevin Behan of Natural Dog Training, that questions the current training paradigm and challenges us to see our dogs through a different lens.

- Story by Heather Mach

In today’s training market, we are encouraged to be very "busy" with our dogs. We begin with early puppy training and socialization, then progress by developing our inner pack leader, apply a consistent system of rewards or consequences, and add lots of physical exercise and mental stimulation to satisfy the idea that "a tired dog is a happy dog." In today's world, owners have never been more engaged and dedicated to the welfare of their dogs and owners have never been more supported by the copious amounts of training resources and philosophies available to raise a balanced and well-mannered dog. However, on the flip side, aggression is on the rise. The number of dog attacks, maulings, recorded bites, euthanasia, and overcrowded shelters is Heather’s dog Gracie, who rising. Dogs are being asked to leave doggie daycares, obedience classes inspired her training journey and medications are being prescribed to help dogs cope with daily life. Com- and has since passed over passion fatigue for those on the front lines has become a real thing as the the Rainbow Bridge. daily struggle to fight what feels like a hopeless battle never ends. Dogs are facing a reality with few options. So what is going on? I asked myself this question long ago when Gracie entered my life, my first problem dog, and I found myself at a loss for how to help her. When I became a trainer years ago, I was motivated to help Gracie. A feisty and volatile border collie rescued at two years old, she became my world and I lived to run, explore hiking paths, throw balls and enjoy her as my best friend. But Gracie was a hellion. She was unpredictable with people, terrible with dogs, attacked the car window like a rabid fiend and never stopped barking. As a responsible dog owner that loved her more than anything, I turned over every training rock I could find. From sheep herding, to obedience classes, to finding my inner pack leader, and hours logged using positive reinforcement training, Gracie developed superb obedience. Yet, it always broke down when I needed it the most. She lacked an off-switch and I lived on pins and needles. Deep inside, I knew I was not reaching her. Despite all of my best efforts, there was a piece of her I could not seem to understand. The next logical step was to become a trainer. I thought the clouds would part and a path lit by the sun would guide the way for me to help Gracie find well-being. That was not the case. However, I am not one to give up. It took years to find an approach to reach dogs like Gracie and years of training afterward apprenticing with the founder, Kevin Behan of Natural Dog Training, so that I can bring his revolutionary methodology to you. It happened in 2011 after I was already a certified trainer. I packed Gracie up and we headed to a three day workshop in Vermont to study with Kevin Behan. We stood in a field with twenty people, circled in a horseshoe, consuming ourselves with the task of wrangling our reactive, barking, pulling, lunging and drooling dogs. Kevin stood tall and calm in the middle with a long thick rope. He approached Gracie, instructed me to hold her close and keep the leash tight. He started swinging his rope like a pendulum, swiping her paws, cracking it like thunder and Gracie did all she could do to run and hide behind me. Kevin instructed; don't let her hide, FEAR CAN NO LONGER WORK, it is time for her to find her INNER COURAGE. Suddenly, Gracie leapt forward and bit that rope like an alligator, throwing her whole being into the pure bliss of the bite. Kevin cheered and let her win the rope prize as she pulled it into her lair like a lion returning with their kill. The whole audience was instructed to clap their hands and cheer as I stroked her spine telling her what a good and brave girl she was. Afterward, she laid at my feet in a self-settled down, breathing with a depth and ease that I had never witnessed. She was completely satisfied and I

knew I had reached her. There she stayed while each dog took a turn at the scary rope and we cheered as dogs worked through their fear and found their inner courage to let out what they had been holding back. From that day forward, Gracie loved the rope. By the end of her life she was playing with dogs, letting strangers rub her belly, laying in the car QUIETLY. I watched this brittle and reactive dog, transform into a soft, supple and social puppy. On that day I learned the greatest lesson that has led to a successful career in training dogs like Gracie. Gracie did not have a mental problem and everything I had been implementing treated her symptoms as if her bad behavior was a poorly made decision. I thought if I applied the system correctly, she would learn to make better decisions that were in alignment with my values. But Gracie did not have a mental problem. She had a physical problem. How can I move this energy building inside of me? Where do I vent this churning ball of stress, fear, panic and anxiety so I can feel better? If she could not do so with her human, then she will discharge elsewhere. Her target became the mailman, strangers, random dogs, people on the other side of car windows, and cats. She was stuck in this cyclical loop of always discharging in an attempt to feel better but never actually reaching a place of satisfaction. When Gracie discharged, there was nothing I could say or do to recover her. She was out of her mind, in survival mode, cut off from all that was around her. On that day I learned Gracie needed clarity on where to move her energy. She needed to trust me with all she had been holding back. This was my awakening. I had to give this girl a bite! Consider for a moment, when we sit down with a therapist, we are able to trust that person with our deepest and darkest junk. The therapist responds with 'Thank you/ Thank you for sharing.' They do not correct or judge against these feelings. We feel safest with those we can move our deepest energy with, our anger, fear, insecurity and vulnerability. It is natural to hold back our energy in public, at work and school, to be well-mannered and polite beings. Once home we have appropriate outlets and people to absorb our deepest junk. They love, accept and do not judge us no matter what. However, when our dogs begin to show energy through jumping, barking, mouthing, nipping, digging, chewing, we immediately shut it down. So where does that energy go? If our dogs could formulate one question, they would ask "where can I move my energy?" If the answer is the human, then our dogs feel safe and value us as the most important being in their world. They are well-mannered and social. However, if the answer is not the human, then our dogs become obsessed and addicted, searching for the outlet that can move the most amount of energy necessary to bring relief to their system. Think for a moment, where does your dog move its energy? Does it go to rabbits, the mailman, strangers, children, other dogs on a walk? If there is fear in the system, then the process of moving energy looks reactive, aggressive, or panic and anxiety ridden. If fear is not present, then dogs have a hard time developing focus and recall. This is because playing with other dogs, chasing bunny rabbits or jumping on guests as they walk through the door feels better. While such explosions of energy bring temporary relief, this process of load/unload never brings satisfaction and well-being. This is why dogs become obsessed with activities like window watching. At the heart of Rising Canine Dog Training, we build "emotional rapport" with our dogs. This is a foundational step before your basic obedience. It naturally tunes your dog to you, creating attraction from dog to owner as our dogs begin to move energy with us. This process begins through what we call the "5 core exercises." If your dog can perform these 5 core exercises anywhere and anytime, then our dogs can feel a pull to the handler no matter the situation because we have satisfied them on the deepest level. Dogs don't choose to ignore or disregard the handler, rather they act according to that which moves their energy. If the human is not part of that equation, then owner and dog are speaking two different languages and cannot get on the same page. Once I taught Gracie the 5 Core exercises and gave her an avenue to move her energy with me, she transformed. If you are not sure about what training path to follow and are frustrated, listen to your dog. Let them be your teacher. It took many years, but Gracie let me know when I had found the right path. Heather with Jenna, a former PEK dog, Join our Rising Canine team, and we will teach you how to raise your puppy, transform your problem happily residing in a home dog, work with aggression and trauma, build the connection you are looking for and lay your obedience foundation so that it does not break down. You will learn how to play with your dog and share affection that supports the process of building "rapport." This is the greatest gift you can give yourself and your dog. Do not hesitate to reach out, we are here to welcome all dogs, breeds and issues.

Training and Rehabilitation for a Better Life

Project Empty Kennels was born as a collaboration between Rising Canine Dog Training and Regional Animal Shelter. “A little shelter with a big heart; this completely volunteer run shelter worked tirelessly to find creative and innovative ways to help dogs that were struggling in the shelter environment. As the affiliate trainers working with this shelter, we knew we needed to do more. So, in 2017, Project Empty Kennels was born out of this call to action. There is nothing better than owning a dog you feel called to help. A dog that needs someone special to help them evolve in this lifetime; a dog that ultimately speaks just to you. . We hope that if you feel a pull to any of our dogs, you do not hesitate to reach out. Owning a Project Empty Kennel dog is not about owning the perfect dog, it is about falling in love with the journey each of these dogs need to restore their trust in the goodness of humanity.

Meet Albany - The girl with 9 Lives! Ready for a home...is that you?

Spayed Female. 3 Years old. Sometimes there is just a quality about a dog you cannot quite explain. Perhaps the dog in our program that has suffered the most awful abuse, Albany's road to recovery has been slow but steady due to the patience and heart of her trainer Tammy Johnson. There is a courageous spirit in Albany as her capacity to trust and shift in this life has rallied the whole Project Empty Kennel's team to continue this mission. Albany always seemed to have one person in her corner throughout her life keeping her from the euthanasia table. She inspires people around her to do more and to do it better because even the most broken of souls matter in today's world. Albany will need to be an only dog and is looking for the right person to walk by her side in her next life chapter. She loves going for walks in the woods on a long lead and feeling the sensation of freedom. Albany resides with her trainer and savior Tammy Johnson of Primitive Dog.

Meet Nina - Quirky, humorous and a spitfire.

Spayed Female. 2 Years old. Nina will make you laugh. From her athletic leaps and bounds, to the housekeeping protocol she keeps in her crate, she is full of a quirky humor and an undeniable spirit that feels reminiscent of her puppy-self. Nina came to us very fragile, untrusting and still struggles with strange hands around her head. We are looking for someone with the patience to embrace this journey and take the time to create safety. Once she builds trusts, you become her person and she will show off her beautiful recall as she nestles into her place beside you. Sometimes the most important and unforgettable journeys are those we choose to take with the dogs damaged by the ugly side of human nature. Here at PEK we will not let them be forgotten. Come take this life changing journey with Nina. You will truly change a life! Even though Nina has dog skills, we are looking for a home without other pets or children. Nina resides with Heather Mach of Rising Canine Dog Training and belongs to Pawsome Pups Persevere.

Meet Heart - A Soulful Companion, her name says it all.

Spayed Female. 4 years old. She has stolen the hearts of the entire Regional Animal Shelter Community, “the belle of the ball.”. Heart loves to walk outdoors, go for car rides and chew bones until she snores and receive Reiki from the Regional volunteers. Heart’s abusive past has caused her to have an initial fear of men but after some patience and time, some of her favorite people are the men she has come to know including her current dog walker. Crate trained and spayed, Heart would enjoy a calm household in which she can flourish as the only dog. She resides with Heather Mach of Rising Canine Dog Training and belongs to Regional Animal Shelter located in Gloversville, NY.

A few words from Passion, who was in this program and was recently adopted from Regional Animal Shelter... Hi friends! Well I think it’s safe to say .... I’m home!!! I have been in a foster to adopt home for the past month and have been doing amazing. My new family is very patient and letting me get used to home life at my own pace. I could not have asked for a better home ❤ Thank you to everyone who helped me along my journey! Especially my trainers Heather and Mark... you truly saved me and brought me back to life. And of course my new family ... Thank you for seeing the special girl I am and giving me the home I so desperately needed. Photo Credit: Photography by Anna Fort

PS. Please always remember to give shy and nervous dogs like me a chance. We are all so special and just need a little extra TLC.

Service Dogs Have a Job to Do

(It’s Important that People Realize That)

It’s almost a certainty that dogs think they have a job to do - to love and protect their humans. From the minute we choose them to love and care for, we receive the gift of the same from them. Service dogs, after extensive training, also have the ability to work for our safety and security and provide a deeper level of care and protection to their human.

There’s no bond quite like that between a service dog and its human. The Americans with Disabilities Act defines service animals as “dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities.”

Because people tend not to understand public access laws or how to interact appropriately with service dog teams, handlers are often characterized as demanding or rude for protecting their legal rights or safety. In online service dog forums, handlers regularly ask how to be strategic about telling strangers not to distract a dog who needs to be watching for medical alert (for example, a dog trained to give early warning for a seizure). These handlers do not want to endanger themselves, but they have been told that they are being unreasonable to expect strangers not to talk to, bark at or call their dog. (Https://ct.counseling.org/2018/10/understanding-and-working-with-service-dog-handlers/)

Kennedy Quintana with service dog Deisel

Deisel’s Purpose

Photo Credit: Karyn Badgett By Kennedy Quintana

Despite the recent fad of falsifying Assistance Dogs, a seemingly contemptuous new trend there does exist truth and need within the disabled community that inevitably requires the use of a Service Dog. Due to the reprehensible decision of counterfeiting pets as Service Dogs, many handicapped individuals have suffered grave consequences or disconcerting despair relative to encounters with imitators.

Meet Deisel, a Medical Alert and Response Service Dog On an unsuspecting Thursday, SD Deisel and his handler, 21 year old Kennedy Quintana, ventured on an errand run. Turning an aisle while shopping, Deisel began to persistently alert Kennedy to an impending health event. Fulfilling his task training, Deisel directed Kennedy to a floor seated position and began purposed grounding with tactility. Kennedy remained cognizant enough to give Deisel the command to “get help.” Responding to his handler’s direction, Deisel took his trained position and barked without leaving Kennedy’s side. This task is a life saving measure that cannot be mistaken or distracted. In mere seconds, Kennedy was being attended to by shoppers and employees of the business. Deisel carries multiple cardiac medications on his vest, along with medical information for use in the event of such emergencies. The rapid intervention of bystanders to administer medications, call 911 and respect Deisel in his moment of action, provided Kennedy with a survivable outcome. Kennedy had suffered an event of pre-cardiac arrest. If Deisel’s duty had been distracted, deflected or doubted, the results of her incident would have conclusively resulted in full cardiac arrest. Should there have been a vested imposter nearby or individuals intent on verbal and/or physical interference, Deisel may have defaulted in his purpose. Service Dogs are medical equipment, fervently trained to specifically task and enable an individual with one or more factual disabilities. Unfortunately, the poor decision that some individuals make to have their pet accompany them everywhere has truly jeopardized the health and safety of those whose life depends on a dog at their side. The ripple effect of people misrepresenting their pets is devastating, and only leads to dangerous engagements and the belittlement of a compromised person’s vivacity. Please educate yourself, your family, friends and community in accordance to the US Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Disability Rights Section or ADA.gov Service Animal ADA Requirements.

It is natural to want to go over and pet or interact with a dog you come across, especially if you happen to be a dog lover. People need to respect the limits a trainer sets on the dog for reasons that may not be immediately obvious to the person wanting to interact with the dog.” When people yell or threaten them when spotting a service dog it puts undue stress on the person facing his/her own issues and could cause the dog to be distracted enough to cause death to the handler, if he/she misses an alert. A service dog needs to remain focused only on the person they have been trained to protect. Kennedy Quintana has a medical condition that requires her to have a service dog, Deisel. Kennedy wholeheartedly loves Deisel and has spent much time training Deisel to protect her in case of an imminent medical emergency. Kennedy is very aware of how fast things could become life or death should people react the wrong way when Deisel is working. On the left Kennedy explains an incident that took place in a store and how Deisel’s quick action saved her from a worse outcome.

There are many types of service dogs. It is vitally important for people to understand their role in society and with their person - their ability to carry out their assigned tasks may be the difference between life and death.

We have published other articles regarding service dogs in past issues. They happen to be written by and about Kennedy’s Mom, Karyn Badgett who herself has a service dog. She such a beautiful kitty with the most amazing green eyes. Diedre loves to be pet, but she prefers to have her 4 feet on the floor. She would make someone a wonderful housemate.

He came to HALO around 1 yrs old and is now almost 3. Jay is a sweetheart that hides behind his shyness. He was rescued from a colony of cats. He is very affectionate when you start petting him - he IMMEDIATELY starts purring and will continue to do so as long as you are petting him.

Pia arrived at HALO in January after her elderly owner was no longer able to properly care for her. She has settled in nicely making friends with her roommates, but we would really like her to get a home of her own.

Tippy

These beautiful Tortoiseshell and Calico Kittens siblings are just under a year old. We rescued them this winter from Top Notch Road and Monroe Street in Little Falls. They were very hungry when they were rescued. They certainly are loving life at H.A.L.O. no longer having to worry about being cold and hungry. Can you just imagine how happy they’d be with a home of their own?!

The Connection is REAL Yo t? i u ca f n fee rt o a p a l it too! W ould you like to be

Zoey, tired after a great day at Wintergreen Park in Canajoharie with her buddy Sharon If you have been reading each of our Crazy About Pets magazines you may already know about the Buddy Program at Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter in Sprakers. The Buddy Program matches up volunteers with dogs that could really use the company that they get when their “special person” picks them up for a ride or an outing or hangs out with them at an adoption event. Read about the Buddy Program in our Sixth Edition of Crazy About Pets on Page 29 by going to:

www.issuu.com/creativityunleashed

There you will find all of the past magazines we have published. You can also contact the shelter at (518) 673-5670 for more information on how to sign up! The benefits far outweigh the effort you will put in!

Zoey, enjoying the sunshine and fresh air at WIntergreen Park

Sharon frequently writes about her experiences with the dogs she is paired with under the Buddy Program. After a day at the park she writes: by Sharon Markwardt

Zoey

Available for adoption at Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter (see page 6 for more info)

Sharon has a beautiful way with words - here is another excerpt written by Sharon about her time with Zoey...

Only one thing could make this postcard-perfect day even more perfect: spending it with this pretty lady. Nothing fancy today - just a meeting of souls. Miss Zoey and I strolled through upper Wintergreen Park, finally ending up at (well, ON) a picnic table to refuel with some Vitamin D and inhale all the budding, earthy scents carried along by the breeze. And as evidenced by the last photo, doing a whole lot of next to nothing can wear a girl right out. (Oh, the rough life of a shelter dog...)❤

A Dog’s Wisdom: When I first began volunteering at Ayres back in early 2017, I imagined that a shelter buddy was essentially a dog’s personal weekly mentor: brushing up on basic commands, obedience skills, and socialization - all while giving her a fun fresh-air reprieve and exploring the world. And undeniably, that’s a huge part of it. But the more time I spend in the company of dogs (like my beautifully resilient Boxer friend Zoey) I realize that what they’ve taught me is even more valuable: Like how you should plant all four paws in the here and now, and never procrastinate when it comes to getting your soul right. Don’t let yesterdays define you, or tomorrows worry you. Play in the sun; bark at the moon. Roll around in the soft earth and invite friends. Remember that no one else holds the patent to your brand of weirdness, so keep shining that weird little light without apology. Keep an adventurous heart. Eat like you mean it. Love with reckless abandon. Embrace your wrinkles, battle scars, and bald patches - they’re proof of endurance. Shake off the worst of the day like water and then forget it. And when you’re given 99 reasons to hang your head, find that ONE reason to wag your tail instead. Celebrate everything that makes you most YOU, and hold your head high. If dogs can do it - seriously, why can’t we?? P.S. If you’d like a wise four-legged motivational coach all to yourself, plan a trip to Ayres and meet lovely Zoey - or any of the shelter’s other amazing adoptables!!

shel·ter

noun

something beneath, behind, or within which a person, animal, or thing is protected from storms, missiles, adverse conditions, etc.; refuge.

Not the horrible place some may think it is!

Yes, they CAN be happy while they wait for their forever families to find them! by Marissa Christman

There’s a stigma people have of shelters and how sad any dog must be if they find themselves calling a shelter their home either until their family is found or a new one finds them. At Ayres, we do everything in our power to make each and every dog as happy as possible no matter how long their stay may be. So many people ask me how I don’t cry all of the time when dogs are surrendered to us and how I don’t just take them all home with me. I also frequently get told that people cannot bring themselves to come to shelters and that if they volunteered being a shelter buddy, they wouldn’t be able to bring the dogs back to the shelter. And to those, I have a simple answer. I know the care the dogs receive while at Ayres. I know that as soon as they come in - that dog, that soul - they are home. They are loved and each member of our staff as well as each of our volunteers care about that dog like their own - no matter the reason that they came to Ayres. For most dogs - the shelter is truly a safe haven. But we know we are their stepping stone to get them ready to succeed in a family. Our team works on every dog’s needs - emotional, physical and behavioral. We teach them that the touch of a loving hand is something that they can grow to love and seek out. We teach them how to be true, carefree, silly dogs with our Shelter Buddy Program which is tailored to each dog’s individual needs. We teach them the tools to work through any kinks that they may come to in life. The obvious goal of our shelter is to match dogs with great families. But in reality, our main goal is to provide our animals with everything they’ve ever needed to help them become the happiest dogs possible until their home can be found. Our team truly understands the love each dog deserves and we make it our goal to give them that and more! We may fall in love with every dog and find times when we don’t quite understand why they haven’t been adopted yet, but we aren’t sad for them, we don’t pity them. I know the love each of our dogs receive. I find myself overwhelmed sometimes with all of it. But in the most amazing way. Our dogs know the true meaning of love and I can truly say that I never pity a shelter dog because I know their days from day in and day out. I see their smiles. I see them grow and learn. Don’t believe me - become a Shelter Buddy and you will know exactly what I mean. I promise.
