Welcome Fellow Animal Lovers...

May 2016

To our second issue of “Crazy About Pets in Fulton & Montgomery Counties & Beyond”

We are thrilled to bring you another heartfelt, informative magazine showcasing local shelters and businesses right here in our area! There are so many wonderful, pet loving people in Fulton & Montgomery counties and surrounding areas that we have had the pleasure of meeting over the past few years. People are just excited about pets in general and shelter pets really tug at their heart strings. We would love to think that everyone who considers adopting a pet into their family would check out a shelter or rescue group first; These are the pets who through no fault of their own end up confused and lonely for what could be years waiting at the shelter for their forever family to find them - see pages 33, 37 and 38. The first issue of “Crazy About Pets” can be viewed at www.issuu.com/creativityunleashed. We truly appreciate all of the compliments we have received and are especially thankful for the stories of people who have been inspired by the magazine. One person donated to many of the shelters in the magazine with a letter stating that they Mike & Linda were inspired to do so by reading it. One man even put up the adoption fee for the two Creek Dogs (he saw their story on Palmieri TV) and remembered he had read about the Regional Animal Shelter (where they were taken) in the magazine. He grabbed his copy and contacted them to offer the donation. Reading about them was the first he had heard of the shelter, which brings us to the reason we started this business in the first place, to help raise awareness for them, to bring their names, and the faces of the pets in their care, out into the community. Shelters and rescue groups need community support to continue their important work. If you can help in any way, by donating money, time, items or by adopting a pet or two, please do so. Our own dog Brownie (who passed over the Rainbow Bridge in Oct. 2014) remains our inspiration as we fill these pages with information and stories that we hope will fill your hearts with the same admiration that we have for these shelters and rescue organizations. We are grateful to Steve Caporizzo and WTEN for allowing us to publish Steve’s story on page 5. His “connections” on TV and via Facebook are phenomenal! Steve has over 48,000 “LIKES” and counting on his Facebook page so when he shares a post about a missing pet or a pet who needs a new home, they get a lot of attention! If you have “LIKED” his Facebook then you have seen some wonderful outcomes! Don’t forget to “Save the Date” for PetAPalooza (see page 7). PetAPalooza is held at 12 of Curtis Lumber’s 21 locations including Ballston Spa and Perth, where they have graciously offered to hand out our magazines. We thank them for that and for what they do to help area pets. Hope to see some of you there! We have often thought about fostering older dogs and we were more than willing to contact the Mr. Mo. Project (see page 15) when asked to do so by a friend of theirs. What they do for senior dogs is just truly amazing! You will barely make it through their website and videos without crying. There are a few stories in this magazine written by people who have adopted senior dogs, one on page 14 (get your tissues out) and one on page 36. Yes, the time may be short with them, but as their adopters will tell you it is worth every single minute you get to spend with a dog who appreciates being unconditionally loved until he crosses the rainbow bridge. As any dog or cat lover would tell you, one way to heal a broken heart after losing a pet is to adopt yet again if possible. We adopted Tobie only 3 weeks after losing Brownie. Tobie’s shelter name was Brownie and we felt it was a “sign” from our beloved dog. Although different in many ways from Brownie, he does have some of Brownie’s odd mannerisms, which we find to be quite interesting. In December our daughter, Alecia, thought that perhaps “she” needed to adopt a puppy this year from a shelter in NC. We asked around and many people told us that two is better than one, it was good for the first dog to have a friend, etc. So we relented - after all, she would be taking this dog with her when she moved out someday. Little, adorable, sweet, fun Willow, weighing in at only 5 lbs. joined the craziness in early December. Not surprisingly, there would be one heck of a fight if Willow were to be taken from us now - she is wonderful and we all love her so very much. She fits in nicely, although I am not going to lie, it can be difficult at times. Our three beautiful cats added to the mix are the reason we came up with the name “Crazy About Pets”. While you are browsing through, don’t forget to check out our list of wonderful restaurants on page 20 who Brownie use our placemats every single day to help us bring awareness to a few of our local shelters. We cannot thank them and our placemat advertisers enough for helping pets get noticed! Speaking of advertisers, we are just plain thankful for the many, many advertisers that have supported this magazine as well - some that continuously support our mats every six and eight weeks and some new ones too! This magazine could not be printed without their support. Now for the contributors, how can we possibly thank them enough for taking time out of their busy lives to write articles for us. You will find this second edition packed full of awesome stories and helpful information. We hope you think it’s a keeper and would love to hear from you. Send us a message at the email below or call us! Last, but certainly not least, we cannot possibly thank the many, many shelter workers and volunteers in this area who put their heart and soul into making sure these wonderful creatures feel the love they are so deserving of - these are amazing people!

We truly hope you find our magazine informative and uplifting - that it inspires you to adopt, to volunteer, to donate or perhaps just to reflect on what pets have meant to you in your lifetime. Thanks for reading it! Mike and Linda

Montgomery County SPCA Road, Amsterdam, NY 12010

For Over a 100 years dogs and cats in Amsterdam have gotten plenty of love from the wonderful staff and volunteers at the Montgomery County SPCA as they await their forever families. Serving eastern central New York for over 100 years, the MCSPCA cares for unwanted, abused, abandoned or neglected animals. While they provide sanctuary for companion animals unable to speak for themselves, their work goes far beyond simply housing, feeding and loving these creatures. The MCSPCA’s programs and services include a low-cost feline spay and neuter program, a foster-care network, animal legislation advocacy, education, and much more. The MCSPCA works tirelessly to take care of, and find good homes for, the dogs and cats residing at the animal shelter. We educate and assist individuals who have too many pets in their homes. We take in these animals to improve the life of both the pets and the individuals. The MCSPCA teams up with local police and sheriff departments on cruelty investigations involving horses, cows, pigs, goats, rabbits, birds, cats and dogs. We have fought in court for the animals’ rights in order to give them the life they deserve. Staff and volunteers of the MCSPCA have been working with the community to identify and assist with the stray cat population. We partner with Feline Guardian Angels, who trap feral cats for a “Trap-Neuter (or spay)Release program. Trapped cats that are not feral are taken into the animal shelter for adoption. The MCSPCA is in the process of building a new animal shelter. We are currently in the planning stage and will be seeking bid proposals soon. It has been a long journey and our building committee has learned a great deal along the way. Because of this we are certain that the new shelter will meet the immediate needs of the community by expanding the services and programs already provided and offering additional services and programs to help more animals and the community members. We at the MCSPCA are proud of the difference we make in the lives of both the animals and the individuals to whom we provide assistance.

Some of the lucky ones receive basic care from kind-hearted people who are unable to take them in, but are able to at least offer them food. We receive calls every day of the week from those who wish to surrender a litter of kittens or stray cats found in their immediate area or their cats that they can no longer provide the proper care required. We constantly seek temporary foster homes for them until they are ready to be adopted out. Kittens at the Montgomery County SPCA aren't eligible to be adopted until they reach ten to twelve weeks of age. We need volunteers to foster the kittens and their moms.

Becoming a foster parent is a great way to help. We need foster parents for: • Mama cats with kittens too young to be placed for adoption. • Kittens without a mother cat who need bottle feeding. • Kittens who are eating on their own, but not big or old enough for spay and neuter surgery.

To insure that our volunteer foster homes will provide an appropriate setting for these animals, an application and home interview are a part of the process. This allows us to identify the right animals for the right foster homes. An ideal foster home for a particular cat might be one with no other pets, or perhaps one with no small children. Also, some animals may have special needs - medications that need to be administered or minor physical therapy. Each foster situation is considered individually. The foster home is the first step - once a space is available at the Animal Shelter, the foster pet will be transferred to the facility to continue its care until a new permanent home is found. Become a part of the MCSPCA Foster Care Program by opening your home and heart to a homeless animal on a temporary basis.

NEWS10 ABC’s Pet Connection and Chief Meteorologist Steve Caporizzo have become household names in the Capital Region For over 25 years now WTEN’s Chief Meteorologist Steve Caporizzo has been a household name in our area, not just because he is their chief meteorologist but also because of Pet Connection.

Pet Connection is an important way to connect potential adopters to the many wonderful pets in need of homes in our area. Steve’s passion for animals is evident in his work and he is an integral part of the animal community in this area.

Pet Connection has been a part of WTEN for over 25 years. Steve grew up in a large family, where money was tight but his mother had a way of scraping up a dollar or two to help out the local SPCA……that stuck with him. She always said, “”We need to be the voice for our pets.” He was never sure how he would help local pets, just that he wanted to. He got his first big break in Bangor, Maine in 1983 and then in 1984 moved to Springfield, MA. It was there at WWLPTV that he started a segment called Pet Corner in hopes of helping local shelter pets get adopted. In 1989, Steve’s weather career took him to Albany New York. This was his chance to start a similar feature in this area. On June 20th, 1990 - the very first Pet Connection aired on WTEN on the 5:30pm newscast. Just like in Springfield, a pet has been featured every Thursday night…It was also his opportunity to promote spay/neuter and to raise funds on their behalf. Some facts about Pet Connection: • 26,000 pets have been directly adopted • Over $500,000 has been raised in the past 26 years on behalf of homeless pets. • Every single penny that has ever been raised goes directly to the shelters/rescue groups to get pets adopted and to give them a second chance at life. Over the years, Pet Connection has become very popular and one of Steve’s biggest passions. He hosts adoption clinics….raises money….and finds homes for so many wonderful pets. WTEN decided to expand it to 2 nights a week in the late 90’s so twice as many pets could be helped each week. It is now aired every night at 5:30pm Monday through Friday. Steve loves the weather, but he admits that helping the pets has become such an important part of his life and even more so with his wife. They are now actively involved in rescuing dogs from Amish Puppy Mills (Since Jan 2012)….and to date they are up over 350 and this is just the beginning. Steve says “You feel so bad for these dogs that have absolutely no life at all….just living in a cage and breeding. We have found some amazing homes for some very resilient dogs. They never cease to amaze me.” Steve on Pet Connection in 1992

It has been easy for Steve to see the immense love for pets that people have in the Capital Region. He frequently attends A recent photo of Steve on Pet Connection fundraising events and speaks at important pet related functions. He is quick to point out that he is in awe of the many great people he has met that are involved in so many ways in pet rescue. He feels that he is just a small part of that. He says “They’re the true heroes, they are in the trenches every single day.”

NEWS10 ABC’s Pet Connection with Steve Caporizzo airs at 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Pet Connection has become very popular over the years, for its segments airing pets available for adoption at local shelters as well as for its involvement in fundraising efforts and pet related functions where Steve is able to talk on behalf of homeless pets. Steve says “The BEST day for me is when I have a pet on Pet Connection…one that maybe hasn’t been looked at in a very long time….then it happens, they get adopted! This is the best reward I could ever dream about. It makes me smile…even more than a good old Fashioned N’easter. When I get an e-mail…a picture…a post on Facebook, all I can do is smile. We’ve made a difference.” Steve and his wife are huge pet lovers, their pets are their kids and they love it! It’s truly is unconditional love and they somehow have a special way of making you feel good….even on the most difficult days.

Having attended the Kirby and Quigley’s Law Fundraiser at the Florida Town Hall, Steve knows that people in our area truly love pets too. He speaks from his heart, the passion he has for pets is evident. Pet advocates have a constant hope that they can change the minds of people who may not have considered how wonderful bringing a pet into your home can be. Pet Connection is an integral part of our community, the name is a symbol of love and hope.

Each day at 5:30 pm on WTEN is another chance for local shelters to get their pets in front of thousands of eyes. The right home is out there for each and every one of them and Steve is happy to be a part of it.

Pet Connection’s popularity on facebook is a great tool for lost dogs & cats and pets who may need re-homing, as well as for local shelter pets. The facebook page has over 48,000 likes!

Don’t Miss this Event! The Largest One Day Adoption Event in NY/VT Saturday, June 18th 10am - 3pm What is PetAPalooza?

“If even one pet finds a needy human to adopt, it is a success for us.” -Jay S. Curtis

Curtis Lumber owners, Jay and Kendra Curtis started PetAPalooza in hope of shedding light on adopting shelter pets in need of a home. Taking in abuse cases of their own, the Curtis’ have used the company’s name to help get word out to the public to not only adopt shelter pets, but to also have pets spayed or neutered to avoid unwanted strays. Curtis Lumber has been in business for 125 years and have accumulated a number of traditions and rituals intertwined within its own culture. This particular tradition has been moving its way up to the top charity spot for the 7th year running. The company invites shelter and rescue groups to come to 11 of Curtis Lumber’s 21 locations and bring animals to these locations to get adopted. “Even though it’s kind of an informal setting, people still come and see if there is a dog or cat that they are interested in - sometimes they may bring their own animals to see if they are compatible” says Curtis Lumber Advertising Manager, Dave Bielawski. Besides meeting pets in need of adoption, attendees get to meet shelter and rescue groups in an informational setting, as well as shop for pet related items at tables and booths set up at each location. Event goers can also meet and speak with local pet groomers, pet sitters and veterinarians. Many adoption rates are lowered for the day as well as some pets being adopted out for free. Hundreds of animals from over 100+ shelters and rescue groups are available including cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, reptiles and more! Each year hundreds of animals find new forever homes thanks to Curtis Lumber’s PetAPalooza!

Upstate Underdog Rescue, Inc. - Troy Upstate Underdog Rescue (a 501c3 charity) works to reduce the number of dogs euthanized at upstate NY shelters through fostering & supported adoptions. UUR’s mission is to match Underdogs with families, and provide the support needed to make a great new pack!

We believe that EVERY dog has a superpower. Some dogs can leap over tall buildings (well, almost), some run so fast they almost fly, some give the BEST kisses and hugs, and all of them want to love and be loved.

For small rescues like Upstate Underdog, having knowledgeable, committed foster homes lined up is the ONLY way we can take dogs out of shelters. We are especially in need of quiet, kid-free, other-animal-free homes (or homes that can safely separate other animals) where dogs can decompress until they’re ready to find their superpower.

If you’ve been thinking about taking the foster plunge, DO IT!! There are ALWAYS dogs waiting. Please check our website www.upstateunderdogrescue.org or message us for more information.

Sometimes, people can’t adopt or foster a dog because their living situation won’t allow for it, even though they love dogs and really want to help. Well, there are many OTHER ways you can help! • Help post available dogs • Be a surrogate parent for a dog class on Facebook • Be the extra human on a pack walk • Help at an adoption event • Help with fundraising

Meet an Upstate Underdog! This special girl is waiting patiently for her forever family...

COULD IT BE YOU?

Lulu

Meet Lulu—the amazing dog with the ability to shrink herself down so small that she can fit in the tiniest of spaces with ease! Okay, so that’s a bit of an exaggeration... While Lulu would love to have a shrinking superpower, she hasn’t quite mastered it yet. This hasn’t stopped her from trying to fit into little spots, though—which has resulted in her getting her big, lovable head stuck in a few odd places…like the railing of the deck and the cat’s door to the basement, just to name two. Two-year-old, American bulldog Lulu’s real superpower is finding the most comfortable place in the house to nap. (Just watch her locate the bed closest to the fireplace on a chilly night. It’s amazing!) She is a big, gorgeous, loyal, goofy girl who’s looking for a family able to give her a consistent spot in their home and heart. She does hang out with other dogs, but she doesn’t have a reliable “off switch”, so she needs to be the only dog in the house or live with humans who will consistently monitor all dog-dog interactions to make sure she doesn’t continue playing when the other dog wants a break. She chases cats, so a cat-free home is also needed. Lulu’s forever humans need to be sturdy because when she gets excited she still tends to jump and/or pull a lot, so a home with kids or other easilyknocked-over people won’t work. Lulu’s vital statistics & forever family needs: about 2 years old • spayed micro chipped • up to date on vaccines no outstanding health concerns • no cats monitored dog-dog time • sturdy humans

You can be Lulu’s superhero by finding out more about her and our adoption process at www.upstateunderdogrescue.org

As a professional pet dog trainer, and a person who lives in a small US town, I am growing increasingly concerned regarding an alarming trend in my fellow dog owners to forgo the use of a simple leash. As I travel our humble main street USA I am dismayed by the increasing instances I observe of dog owners walking their dogs without the security of a simple 4 or 6 foot leash. The dangers of this ever growing trend cannot be understated. If you are considering forgoing a leash or are currently doing so, I beg you to keep reading not only for your sake but for the sake of your dog who cannot put the leash on himself, but surely would want you to do so if he understood just one of the possible consequences of walking without a leash. Let’s consider some of the more terrifying reasons a leash is a necessity: Even if your dog is the most delightfully friendly dog ever known to humanity, there is never any guarantee that something terrible won’t occur to cause your dog to bite or to get bitten. It might bite a human or another dog. Many people have told me that they are CERTAIN their dog would never run off and go after another dog or human. My life long experience with dogs has taught me that is NEVER true no matter how wonderful the dog might be or how well the dog listens to the human when they call the dog to come back. The reason ANY dog can be driven to bite is because dogs are ALWAYS dogs FIRST! Instinct will always be the first thing that drives your dog to act. When they encounter another animal or human that they sense, for instance, is a threat to them or to you, their owner, they are driven to act. Even the most fearful, timid dogs will act in an attempt to get what scares them to go away. This is just the reality of canine behavior that must never be ignored or denied. It is the responsibility of each and every dog owner to maintain control over their dog at all times. No one, no matter how great a trainer they are, or how great their dog might be, can guarantee full control over their dog without a leash. This is just fact. To deny this fact is to put your dog in danger. If you truly love your dog more than you love your ego, use a leash.

Petey and Jenny out on one of their daily leash walks. Photo Provided by Brittany Palmieri.

I suspect that many people avoid using a leash do so because they may be having trouble getting their dog to walk on a loose leash and are, therefore, being dragged everywhere by their dog. Allowing a dog to drag their human on the walk is almost as dangerous as not using a leash at all. The solution is simple: go to a trainer who specializes in loose leash walking and basic obedience to help you learn how to train or retrain your dog to walk calmly on a loose leash. It really CAN be done! It takes practice and then more practice. Dogs are not born knowing how to walk calmly on a leash. It is up to us to teach them. Also, walking with your dog is VITAL to your relationship with your dog because it is during calm walking that your dog learns to follow YOU and respect YOU. The walk is the activity in which you establish your leadership with your dog and develop a meaningful relationship. I can’t overstate the importance of calm walking with your dog! I specialize in calm walking using gentle calm techniques so the process is enjoyable for both the human and the dog. When a dog is off leash, it is by default, HUNTING. Is it any wonder that so many things go wrong when the dog is loose? It is worth the money for a good trainer and good equipment because in the end, it could save endless heartache and thousands of dollars in veterinarian and legal expenses. If a loose dog bites, the reason the dog is driven to bite simply doesn’t matter legally because the ONLY factor that any court is going to care about is the fact that YOUR DOG WAS NOT ON LEASH AND THEREFORE COULD NOT BE UNDER YOUR CONTROL. Think about it. Your dog can be the very best, most well behaved, beautifully trained dog in the world, but if an over excited out of control dog suddenly appears, your dog WILL leap into action and if the other dog is leashed, your dog will be blamed, and, frankly, rightly so. If the other dog is injured, and the owner decides to sue, you could be held responsible for veterinarian bills, any citations given by the town or city, and even, in some server cases, damages. It can get very, very expensive. Use a leash and save the off leash play for your yard or other secured area.

The Law in most states requires that your dog is under your control at all times. Most towns have a leash law requiring dog owners to leash their dogs when walking them off their own property. If you choose not to leash your dog when walking it can result in a citation and hefty fines, and, in some server cases, a lawsuit and/or death of a dog. In short, it can be very expensive emotionally and financially. A leash is very cheap and can be as simple as a well secured rope. There really is no excuse not to use a simple leash every single time your dog is in public and not within a secure structure such as a fence. Use a leash. If you are struggling with your dog on the walk, call a good trainer.

In fact, call me, I would love to help you learn to Master the Walk! Leatrice Miller Natola, CPDT, located in Johnstown, NY. Call: 518-762-8804, or 518-705-8469, website: www.barknfriends.com Check out B.A.R.K. ‘n Friends, LLC on

Are you thinking about helping your dog become a Canine Good Citizen and/or a Registered Therapy Dog? Not all dogs are fit for the task of becoming and being a registered therapy dog. Being a therapy dog is “work” and requires your dog to be well mannered at all times when with a patient. Read on to hear about how one family has guided not one but two of their dogs to do just that. When people hear that I now have not just one, but two, registered therapy dogs, I commonly get asked what it takes to get your dog there. And I feel like that is a loaded question, that your dog has to have half of it inside of them, and the other half is your guidance. You can visit http://tdi-dog.org/ to find out more specifics as to what your pet would have to go through to pass the test. I have found therapy work with my dogs to be a very rewarding process. I am not going to lie, I think I had ulcers on the day of both tests. But to see a patient smile at your dogs and the pleasure that a dog can bring is like nothing I have ever experienced. I remember before I ever owned a dog, wishing that some day I would be lucky enough to have a therapy dog. And I thank Cydney Cross founder of Out of the Pits, Jenny and Petey - who have both received the Canine Good Citizen Award and are also Registered Therapy Dogs Inc. (see page 11) for encouraging me and guiding not only me, but the combination of both me and my dogs, throughout the process. It isn’t something that is for everyone or every dog, but if you think that your dog has the ability and would enjoy the work, then I would encourage you to give it a try. Out of the Pits - and into your hearts Founded in 1994

Out of the Pits P.O. Box 2311 Albany, NY 12220

info@outofthepits.org Out of the Pits, Inc. is a registered 501c3 not‐for‐profit organization. All members of this organization are volunteers, and 100% of all donations are dedicated to saving the dogs.

Out of the Pits seeks to educate the public about the true nature of the American Pit Bull Terrier and to make them aware that they used to be one of America’s favorite breed of dogs. Our efforts are aimed at restoring the breed to its former position of esteem in the hearts and minds of people everywhere Our main focus is education. We visit dozens of schools with our certified therapy Pit Bulls to teach humane education throughout the New York Capital District, as well as nearby Massachusetts and Connecticut.

• We are currently developing curriculum for working with children in areas where Pit Bulls are particularly at risk • In the near future we hope to have fully developed presentations available for delivery at all levels from elementary through college. If interested in bringing one of our programs into your school, please contact us at info@outofthepits.org.

Sadly, Out of the Pits receives approximately 1,000 requests per week to take unwanted Pit Bulls. Shelter statistics are equally staggering – it is estimated that more than 80% of Pit Bulls in shelters are euthanized, and typically only 1 in 600 Pit Bulls finds a loving home. To address this need we have come up with

A Free Pit Bull Spay-Neuter Program called “Fix-A-Bull”

Please visit our “Spay-Neuter” page on www.outofthepits.org for information on how to get your Pit Bull spayed or neutered for free (or a discounted price), or visit our donations page if you would like to make a contribution to help support the Fix-A-Bull Program.

Your donations pay for their food, housing, and veterinary care. IRS authorization number is 16-1560721. Right now, we are able to save only a small percentage of the abandoned and abused Pit Bulls that we are asked to accept into our program every day. Many must be turned away only because we lack sufficient funding. Your contribution will help save a dog’s life.

Check out Out of the Pits on Cydney Cross - co-founder of Out of the Pits, with Stella, a rescued pit bull.

How did OOTP get started?

Mary Allen and I started OOTP 22 years ago . We were both rescuing greyhounds - she’s a writer I’m a photographer. She hired me to photograph a dog named Tux He was a pit bull that was an international weight champion - he pulled a Ford Escort ! I ended up with “Rose” a half pit bull- half greyhound - that was the beginning of me wanting to start rescuing pit bulls. Rose was a heart dog for me! Then came Alexis - both of them were therapy dogs. Mary ended up adopting a dog named “Spirit” - a pit bull that was thrown out of a car on the Taconic. There were many people helping greyhounds at that point in time and not many helping with pit bulls - so we slid over to help pit bulls get adopted. The name Out of the Pits popped into my mind and I asked what she thought. She liked it! Out of the Pits was born!

or go to: www.outofthepits.org to find out more!

The stigma attached to “Pit Bull” has contributed to the rise of pit bulls waiting for adoption in U.S. shelters. 80% of dogs in shelters are pit bull type dogs and only one in 600 get homes nationwide. Pit Bulls have an immense love for people and have long been chosen to be nursemaids for children or nanny dogs. If you are considering adopting a pet, please do not overlook this wonderful breed, rather get educated and make an informed decision.

OOTP is working to restore the pit bull to it’s former position of America’s favorite dog.

The main focus of Out of the Pits is education and community service. We work to help people understand the benefit of spaying and neutering their dogs. We also help people keep their dogs by assisting families, veterans, single parents with food, vet care and training. All donations received by Out of the Pits go directly to the dogs. We work on a 1+1+1 level - making sure the dogs in our care have the very best that we can provide until they find their forever home. There is no time limit on how long the dog can stay with us once we have taken it into the OOTP family. A rescued dog stays with us until the right match is found however long that takes. At OOTP we feel the right match is critical as we want a dog to stay in it’s home until it crosses the rainbow bridge. Once those hearts begin to heal we hope for the family to come back to adopt another. We have no age limits on the dogs that we take in. We work with shelters, animal control, police and national organizations helping where we are needed while keeping our numbers within a range that we can do our very best with. We are always looking for more fosters for adult dogs. It’s our desire that every dog has a foster until it is adopted. - Cydney Cross

Alexis was the beloved working companion of OOTP president Cyd Cross. She suffered a fatal stroke in 2008. She was originally rescued from deplorable conditions during a drug raid and ended up becoming the symbol of all that pit bulls could be. Alex’s image can be seen today on the Out of the Pits logo – on OOTP's posters, t-shirts, mugs, etc. In addition to being seen, handled and loved by thousands of school children throughout the Northeast, Alex appeared on TV many times on behalf of her breed. Her sparkling, people-loving personality was the subject of an Associated Press article published in newspapers coast to coast. For more than 10 years Alex, with Cyd at her side, could be found in schools, nursing homes, hospitals, drug rehabs, camps and at many special events – anywhere a little canine love and kindness could brighten someone’s day. Today, Out of the Pits invites you to meet some of their ever-growing list of our working Therapy Dogs certified by Therapy Dog International. If interested in having one of these extraordinary dogs visit your facility please contact us at therapy@outofthepits.org. Alexis – TT, CGC, TDI

Alexis’ memory remains with us forever, but her legacy lives as our ever-expanding group of Out of the Pits’ working Therapy Dogs follow in her footsteps. CRAZY ABOUT PETS in Fulton & Montgomery Counties May 2016 - 11

Saving Malina - one man’s commitment to see to it that an abandoned puppy found a forever home.

The church where Malina was found in Malinalco, Mexico.

Jose with Malina before they left for their journey to the USA.

Jose with Malina on one of his visits to see her.

What a heartwarming story of adoption this is! Bob, Pam and Jordyn Duffy, from Amsterdam, NY have been Malina’s forever family for over 8 years now. Malina was found abandoned at a church in Malinalco, Mexico. The man who found her there was Jose Alzorriz. He is a businessman from Brooklyn, NY and was on a business trip with his wife Cristina and also visiting their best friends who had moved to Mexico. They decided to sightsee and it was that day, at a church, that Jose spotted a little brown puppy watching over her deceased brother in the bushes. The mother was nearby but sickly and could not provide milk for Malina. Jose ‘s friends had just lost their own dog Tozzo and felt Little Malina at the vet after it was a sign of some sort that they needed to help this puppy, Jose went to buy milk for the puppy she was found. and took her to the local vet, where the vet started her on medication to clear up her skin issues and infestation. Jose and Cristina needed to get back to the USA, so they left her in care of the vet who promised to put her up for adoption when she was better. Jose had wanted to take her with them but she was so little and sickly it was impossible. He kept in touch with the vet and when she did not get adopted after two months, he went back to Mexico to get her and brought her to the USA. Jose’s friend, Judy Kindlon a co-worker of Pam’s at Anthem Health Services brought photos of Malina to work with her to show her co-workers. She placed the one above on Pam’s desk as she was sure that Pam and family would be a perfect family to adopt her. They had lost their family dog recently. Pam immediately fell in love with Malina’s photo and said she wanted to adopt her. Malina was a delightful puppy, full of energy and high spirits. The dog stayed with Judy for a few days before Pam could take her. Judy sent Pam home with all kinds of toys and a blanket. She has since become “Aunt Judy” to Malina and sends her cards for her birthday and holidays along with wonderful gifts as well. Pam surprised her family when she brought Malina home and Malina has been a loyal and loving pet for the Duffy’s. Jose has visited Malina as well just as he promised in his email to Judy. They no doubt have a special bond that will last forever. Malina is over 8 years old now. The Duffy’s dress her up on holidays and even though she weighs 73 lbs. she thinks she is a lap dog. Pam admits she is spoiled and a big old snuggle bunny who loves cheese. Who would have thought that a dog found in the bushes at a church in Mexico would make it home to a forever family in Amsterdam, New York that happens to adore her. Zen’s Story - his journey into his new Mom’s heart

as written by France Blanco-Bardia It was a really sad time for me. I had lost my 14 year old dog Puca Doo. He suffered a stroke and had to be put down. After he was put down in my arms, I vowed to never own another dog. The heartbreak was just too much to bear. At the age of 70, I was certain my dog days were no more. I was watching the news one day and I saw Steve Caporizzo with a “Mr. Mo” dog. The story touched me, so I decided to donate the supplies (insulin, diabetic needles, thyroid medication, flea prevention medication, heartworm medication) that I had remaining for Puca Doo. The Mr. Mo Project rescues elderly abused animals. When the pets they rescue are healthy again, they take care of all veterinary bills for the life of the dog. Unfortunately, when I called and got one of the owners on the phone, Mariesa, I could not speak and I broke down crying. Just saying my dog’s name out loud was just too much for me. About a week later, the same thing happened. Mariesa told me to take all the time that I needed, and they would love the donation. She mentioned a dog she had that she thought would be perfect for me. He was a 9 year old puggle (half pug and half beagle). I immediately told her that “never again” would I have another dog. My good friend Darlene was aware of the pain I was in. She would often come over with Lola, her 4 year old pug, to try ease my sorrow. Darlene was constantly reminding me of this dog that Mariesa had. But I had completely closed my mind to another dog. As far as I was concerned, Lola, my God-doggie, would be the only dog in my life.

Zen with his mom, France

Darlene and I finally went to deliver the supplies. Little did I know what was waiting for me. I met this beautiful young woman, Mariesa who was holding this small fragile dog. She said that she was caring for the dog because the dog was dying of cancer. She kept him at her side at all times. I did my best not to look at this other dog that was to her right. We had a lovely exchange of words until I finally asked about the other little dog. This was the dog she had spoken to me about. She explained how she was looking for a foster home for him for just over the Xmas holidays. NO WAY, NO HOW, was I going to take this dog! Then I saw his face. He looked at me. I looked at him. THAT WAS IT!! Before we knew it, the dog was in the car with this 70 year old senior. They had named him “Fritz” and I didn’t think that suited him so I renamed him “Gerard Butler” (my Hollywood crush). My daughter said absolutely not, so his name is Zen. Here I am, soon to celebrate my 71st birthday, with a new best friend at my side. Sure I remember and miss my Puca Doo. But deep down in my heart I believe that he sent Zen to me. He didn’t want me to be alone. My wish is for more seniors to know about this great program. Not only do they pay all the medical costs, they put him on a gift registry list as well. I have yet to buy any dog food or treats for him, I have also received 2 sweaters, 5 toys, a bed, 2 car seats and a crate. Companionship for a senior. What could be better!

Thank you “Mr. Mo Project” for giving me my new best friend. I didn’t rescue him - he rescued me!!!! Adopting an older pet can be such a truly amazing and wonderful journey. They will give you back so much unconditional love and loyalty. Be their HERO, consider adopting an older dog or cat today and give him/her the forever home they deserve to live out their years.

This is the incredibly heartwarming story of two wonderful people inspired by their late dog Moses to make a difference in senior dogs lives...

What is The Mr. Mo Project?

Run by a 501c3 non-profit group called Rowdy To The Rescue, the Mr. Mo Project was established to save countless shelter dogs since 2011. Chris Hughes founded the Mr. Mo Project with his wife Mariesa. They fight to save senior shelter dogs nationwide to honor their lives and the life of their late and beloved senior dog, Mr. Mo. See France’s heartwarming story about the Mr. Mo Project on page 14!

Mariesa and Chris with their adopted senior dogs Photography by: Tanya Bissaillon Photography

The Mr. Mo Project saves senior dogs from kill shelters across the United States. These dogs often come with hefty vet bills in order to regain their health so they can live comfortably in their forever foster homes. But, the Mr. Mo Project doesn’t stop after covering their initial medical costs, they continue covering the medical needs of each dog in their program for the remainder of their life. This takes the financial demand of a senior dog, that often deters people from adopting them, out of the question and provides homes that give these seniors “The Best of Life for the Rest of Life.” From routine vet visits and medications to emergency surgeries and 24 hour care, the Mr. Mo Project spends an average of $15,000 per month on the dogs in their program. Often these dogs have lived a life of neglect and/or abuse before being dumped at a shelter or left out on the streets in their golden years. Without this organization these dogs wouldn’t know comfort, love and peace in their final days, months or years - and every dog deserves to feel that in their life. Thankfully the Mr. Mo Project has been helped by some great local and national partners. Donations are so very important to help make senior dogs adoptable by assisting with expenses associated with welcoming them into new homes. They not only help with vet bills but with other items as well to provide a smooth transition into their new families! Please check the website for upcoming fundraisers! Check out the Mr. Mo Project online at www.MrMoProject.com. There you can purchase items from their store that directly support the senior rescue dogs they help nationwide. Amsterdam Kitten Adoptions (AKA)

Feline Guardian Angels - Amsterdam

Hagaman, New York 12086 (518) 265-2842 - Gina Kline

We are a small group of foster homes that take in kittens from our area and get them adopted into homes. Our adoption fee includes their spay or neuter, nail trim, flea treatment and rabies vaccination. AKA has adopted out over 100 kittens since we started the program last year. Most of which were either already on the street or would have been put out on the street.

Committed to protect the welfare of our community felines one cat at a time.

Feline Guardian Angels is an established formed 501(c)3 charitable organization staffed by a small group of 6 experienced volunteers. FGA is a spay/neuter advocacy strictly for feral and stray cats which serves our local Montgomery County community.

To date this year they have already Spayed/Neutered 72 Cats!

Our Mission: TO REDUCE: The Feral Cat overpopulation through spay/neuter/release (TNR) assistance.

TO ASSIST INDIVIDUALS TO HELP PROTECT:

Amsterdam Kitten Adoptions have most of their adoption clinics and fundraisers at Super Shoes in Amsterdam - check out their facebook page for the next adoption clinic!

If you like kitties but don’t think you want a long term commitment we are always looking for foster homes. Snow birds welcome! This is a great way for people who love kittens to spend time with them while they wait for their forever homes. Check out AKA on facebook at: Amsterdam NY Kitten Adoptions on or call Gina Kline for more information.

Homeless Cats from neglect, abuse, and abandonment. TO ADVOCATE: For their welfare through education and direct assistance to improve quality of life and stabilization of colonies. TO PROMOTE: Greater appreciation of feral cats and human interactions/responsibility.

Hours: Mon – Sun: 7am – 9am & 4pm – 6pm or by appt.

The Regional Animal Shelter is a volunteer run not-for-profit, no-kill animal shelter founded in 2002

What We Do

Reunite - stray dogs with their families. Rescue - animals from bad situations. Adopt dogs - into new, loving homes. Spay & Neuter

We have partnered with Finding Rover, a FREE app and website that uses facial scanning technology to identify dogs (and soon, cats!). We are the second shelter in the state to do so, but we hope that every pet owner and shelter in the area utilizes this FREE application to get their furkids home more quickly and safely if they ever get out! Get the details here:

to decrease the number of unwanted animals.

Sign up today! It's free and easy!

Educate the public

and dogs owners on animal health, training, and awareness.

Adopting from Regional Animal Shelter is an easy process

we will help you find the dog that is perfect for you and your family. It involves finding out a little about you and your home, visiting with the dogs and talking with one of the animal shelter professionals. After you have met and decided which amazing animal you would like to adopt, we will ask that you fill out an application. Applications are available at the shelter; they must be completed in full and returned to the shelter office. If you are unable to make it to the shelter, please contact us and we will send you an application.

Check out Regional Animal Shelter on

10% DISCOUNT

w/coupon (NOT VALID FOR MONTHLY RENTALS)

Now, every stray dog that enters Regional can be instantly identified on the Finding Rover app or website using facial recognition technology for FREE. Users of Finding Rover can search the shelter right from their smartphone or computer for their missing dog, a neighbor’s missing dog, or search for adoptable dogs. Support for cats is expected to launch by July of 2016. Finding Rover is currently available at http://findingrover.com and available on iOS devices and Android devices FREE. “A dog is a beloved family member, and if he or she goes missing, it can be devastating to everyone involved. We want to do everything we can to safeguard our dogs from being lost forever. Registering a dog on Finding Rover is another step all owners should take to further protect their cherished pet.” — John Polimeno, CEO and founder of Finding Rover.

Zeke’s Second Chance Isn’t he a handsome fella? He needs your help!

Zeke came the Regional Animal Shelter on 9/12/15. He was timid and not thrilled about being around strangers. Once he realized he was safe he warmed up quickly, even allowing bellyrubs! His initial evaluation from Paw It Forward Dog Training, LLC. was given after 15 days at the shelter. He showed many signs of being heavily abused but seemed to be able to put that stress aside and be a love bug to the shelter volunteers. After time he started exhibiting signs of stress and over stimulation when strangers and new dogs came in or when any changes were made to his environment. It was time for a second evaluation and in this one it was realized that Zeke acts completely different when he is in a situation with people he doesn’t know. He was diagnosed with a condition called form sensitivity. It is treatable but it will take time and patience. Photo: Jessica Painter Photography Zeke needs help on two fronts. First he needs to get out of the shelter and never return, as the shelter is the worst place for him to be. He needs a dedicated foster or even better that special forever home. Before he is able to leave the shelter he needs extensive rehabilitative work to help him deal with the stress of meeting new people. We have paired up with Kevin Behan of Natural Dog Training who will take Zeke into his care. In addition to this Jeanne and Heather at Paw it Forward will be working with Zeke’s foster parent or forever family to help Zeke thrive outside of the shelter. This Zeke’s last option. Zeke has been severely abused and it is heartbreaking to think of what he has endured. We need your help to get Zeke the help he needs to save his life. We know this training model will work, it worked with Clay, who had also been abused - see page 22 as he is now enjoying being loved by his forever family. If you can help with the cost of the rehab, which may take months, or if you or someone you know would be a good foster or forever parent for Zeke, please help!

All donations made online through our website (see below) will go directly toward Zeke’s care. If you prefer you can mail a donation payable to Regional Animal Shelter to 117 West Fulton St., Gloversville, NY 12078 Check out Regional Animal Shelter on or go to: www.regionalanimalshelter.org to find out more!

Miles for Mutts

Cheryl Hanes (Sky) of the Regional Animal Shelter in Gloversville has started a campaign to help raise money for the Regional Shelter. She will be participating in the Mohawk Hudson Half Marathon with 1,800 others on October 9th, 2016.

I joined the Regional family as Abby’s Mom in January of 2013 when Abby came to my house and decided that the couch was rather comfy and it would do quite well to suit her needs. Regional Animal Shelter is a small (8 kennel) volunteer-run, non-profit, no-kill shelter. It is staffed by the most dedicated and passionate animal lovers in the area who want nothing more for the dogs than to have them well taken care of and in a forever home. For being so small and so new (compared to the other shelters in the area - turning 4 in May!), I wanted to help them out with a little something - spreading the word about a such an awesome group and what they do, and helping the dogs in their care out at the same time. While training for and running the Mohawk Hudson Half Marathon, I’d like to raise awareness about Regional: who we are, what we do, and how awesome our dogs are (and Abby, a rescue dog they are pretty awesome!). If you see me out running (look Sky adopted from for the Regional logo!), feel free to ask what I’m doing! You The Regional Animal may even meet a shelter dog in the process (if I’m not running Shelter (aka Doodles) with Abby)! :) Would you like to sponsor my run and help our furkids? Go to: https://www.flipcause.com/secure/fundraiser/NjI1MA==/88 or email: sky@regionalanimalshelter.org or mail a check made out to Regional Animal Shelter to: 117 West Fulton St, Gloversville, NY 12078 please note that it’s for the Miles for Mutts.

But at LaVilla Dog Works, BIG collars for BIG DOGS are their specialty! All of the great fabrics are available in extra small to extra big sizes! So there is no more looking at all the fun, cool, awesome collars and feeling the disappointment of them not coming in your dog’s size - at LaVilla Dog Works, they do! In addition to the collars & leashes that Fred & Gina make, their friend Mary Jo helps out by making matching bandanas and also supplies the shop with her locally-made Ag & Market-approved dog treats!

Mike and I can tell you that from experience! Our cat Mylie is a bit overweight (ok, more than a bit, but we are working on that!) I could tell that she needed some help grooming herself and for the longest time wanted to get her groomed. I was afraid she would be mean to the groomers so I warned the girls - I said I would stay close in case I had to come back in 10 minutes! GUESS WHAT? Mylie did wonderfully! She still looks fabulous after weeks, and still smells wonderful too. And...maybe it is the little bit of weight she has been losing, along with being wonderfully clean, but we are sure she has more pep in her step and she is most definitely a happier cat!

A New Puppy in the House

Dr. Crystal Murray, DVM owner of

5877 Route 30 South, Amsterdam, New York 12010 (518) 843-2882 Dr. Murray graduated from Cornell University Veterinary School in 1996. She did a brief stint as an emergency veterinarian before settling into a career with small animals, mostly dogs and cats. Crystal lived in NJ prior to moving up to NY in 2006. She bought the closed Mohawk Valley Veterinary Hospital in 2010. Crystal redesigned the building to improve its utility as a veterinary hospital, and supervised its complete renovation. She opened Country Valley Veterinary Clinic a few months after this. In her spare time, Crystal is the mother of two wonderful children, and the guardian of two dogs, four cats, one horse and too many chickens.

Check out CVVC on

So you got a new puppy?! Congratulations! There are some things you can do to help your newest family member be as healthy and happy as possible. Ideally, we like to wean puppies from their mothers between 7 and 8 weeks of age, no sooner. The mother dog gives a younger puppy ideal nutrition and confidence, so please don’t bring your puppy home too soon. Your puppy should have his first veterinary visit as soon as you get him to make sure there are no health issues, and to discuss vaccine choices, health care, training, etc. It is also a good idea to bring a list of any questions or concerns you might have. We usually give all puppies several treatments of a basic dewormer at 6, 8, and 10 weeks of age. This helps to clear the puppy of roundworms and hookworms. After the last treatment, your veterinarian should check a stool sample for any parasites. All puppies also need to receive a series of “puppy shots.” At a minimum, we will want to vaccinate against distemper and parvo, as well as rabies. Other vaccines should be discussed with your veterinarian. All puppies should receive their “puppy shots” every 3 to 4 weeks of age, starting at 7 to 9 weeks, and continuing to 16 weeks of age or older. That is to say, the last puppy shot needs to be given when your pup is at least 16 weeks of age. All puppies should be socialized. They need to get out into the world and meet new people, new friends (other friendly dogs), and see new places. That said, until the puppy has received his last puppy shot, he is at risk for contagious diseases such as parvo. Due to this risk, I usually ask clients to stay out of heavily populated areas, such as downtown and city parks, until all the shots have been given. So please socialize at the homes of people who vaccinate their pets, or keep your puppy in your arms when walking into stores with him or her. Puppies should be fed a high quality puppy food. If they are larger puppies, be sure to use a large breed formula! Please stay away from “bargain” brands of food. What they eat when young can make a difference to their future joint and bone health. We usually recommend feeding three times a day until puppies are 6 months of age, and then dropping to twice daily thereafter. It is best to avoid people food. Also, please don’t let your puppy eat foreign objects such as pieces of toy, rocks, rubber bands, etc, and please don’t let her chew on electric cords! Puppies will eat strange things, so it is important to “puppy proof” your house. The best dog is a well trained dog, and training starts as a puppy. A discussion about training is beyond the scope of this article, but there are many great resources available on line and at the library. I think it is great for all puppies to be enrolled in puppy school with a good trainer. Please make sure your obedience school requires proof of vaccinations so that your puppy is safe. Most importantly, take lots of pictures as these precious moments are fleeting. Enjoy!

We rely heavily on private donations to keep our doors open. The APF generates income by providing animal control services, adoption fees, and crematory services.

The Community Spay/Neuter Clinic

is the APF’s answer to our community’s pet overpopulation crisis.

We provide compassionate care by licensed and skilled veterinary professionals using quality instruments and supplies. Who is eligible to use the clinic? This program is intended for those who cannot otherwise afford to have their pets altered. It also supports the work of shelters and rescue organizations and enables Good Samaritans caring for feral cats to manage them humanely and affordably. We are not a wellness clinic. Our focus is on spaying and neutering and the limited additional services we offer are only available in conjunction with surgery.

2 fee structures are offered: One for the general public and one for those receiving some type of public support.

Dog Bites - Advice On How To Avoid Them Dog bite prevention week was May 15-21 this year and with each passing year we are seeing the number of bites increase. Could it be that the number of dogs people have has increased, or that people aren’t spending as much time with their dogs or could it be the increase of people who treat their dogs like children? Without honest extensive studies there is no way to know but what we do know is that 4.5 million Americans are bitten every year, 1 in 5 of them require medical attention and most of them are dogs known to the victim whether it be their own animal or a friends/family member. A large majority of those bitten were children between the ages of 5-9. We also know that 76% of the dogs who bit were intact males. My personal study based on the last few years also indicated that at least 50% of my dog bite cases where the owners knew the dogs origin were taken away from their litter mates before 8 weeks. Why is that significant you my ask…because dogs learn bite inhibition from their litter mates between the ages of 6 and 8 weeks so pups taken from their litter at 5 and 6 weeks because “mom wanted nothing to do with them” don’t have the chance to learn that. What that means is the pup never learns that biting hurts so they tend more often than not to bite harder than their counterparts who were taken after 8 weeks.

So what can we do to prevent bites? Gina Kline with her dog Tikanni Blue

1. If you get a puppy make sure it’s at least 8 weeks of age. Seek professional training if you have questions or concerns.

Gina is the owner of

2. Don’t treat your dog like a baby, lavishing it with toys, affection and free roam. Dogs need structure, stability, rules and direction. They need to be able to trust that their human will protect them.

Out of the Dog House Dog Training Hagaman, New York 12086 (518) 265-2842 and

Animal Control Officer for the City of Amsterdam

Gina is an ABCDT Certified Dog Trainer and runs Amsterdam Kitten Adoptions as well

3. Teach your children the proper way to approach a dog and how to be respectful of animals in general. (if an animal has teeth it is capable of biting!) a. Always ask the dog’s handler if you can pet before approaching. RESPECT THEIR ANSWER! They know their dog and are protecting you. b. If permission is given, approach slowly with your hands at your sides and don’t go directly at the dog. c. Let the dog sniff you, if they back away, or growl that is the dogs way of saying “no thank you, I don’t want your attention.” RESPECT IT. d. If the dog moves into your space that typically means “okay I would like your attention” e. Pet, Pause and RESPECT. Pet the dog one or two times then stop, if the dog comes back for more, continue petting, if the dog backs away or wanders off RESPECT that and don’t chase him. 4. If you are chased or approached by a strange dog remain calm. a. Keep your hands either clasped in front of you or crossed under your arms. b. DO NOT SCREAM OR RUN!! You will either scare the dog and risk getting bit or kick its prey drive in and become a target. c. If the dog knocks you down, tuck yourself into a ball with your knees and body facing the ground. d. Curl your hands into fists tucking your thumbs inside and cover your face and head. Protecting your face and neck are paramount. e. If you witness an attack call for help immediately!! By teaching our children to be respectful of animals we are not only preventing bites but also preventing the deaths of those animals who do bite.

My name is Sydnee and for my 10th birthday party I invited all of my friends. I asked them to bring pet supplies instead of birthday presents. I collected cat food, dog food, cleaning supplies, cat litter, cat/dog treats and toys, blankets and towels. I donated all of those pet supplies to the James A. Brennan Humane Society in Mayfield. The Humane Society gave me a t-shirt and let me hold and pet some of the puppies and kittens I was helping. It made me feel happy to help the animals. My friend and my sister, Payton are also collecting pet supplies instead of birthday presents at their parties to donate to different shelters. Please think about helping the animals at the shelter too!

Animal Rescue...

there are so many forms of it It starts with people who have huge hearts, truly dedicated to animal welfare, who work tirelessly to save pets from dire situations. Some foster, some volunteer to drive, some do paperwork, some distribute flyers, some network with others, and so much more. We are fortunate in NYS to have many wonderful rescuers advocating for homeless pets.

I asked a friend, Penny Ross - of Hagaman, NY, who has rescued, adopted, fostered, transported and more for many years to talk about it with me. Penny is currently a member of Mountain Rottie Rescue and has agreed to share information about them and the work they do to transport dogs they have saved from over-crowded shelters here and in the south. She also candidly talks about the work she does and what being a rescuer means to her. Who is Mountain Rottie Rescue and can you estimate how many pets are saved each year?

Penny Ross with Chops, one of the dogs she helped transport to safety.

MRR got its 501c3 in 2009. Krissey Buckley Downey started this rescue out of her home in Monticello NY. Every year the members increase. This year we are up to 50 active members. Some cannot foster but they do paperwork, interviews, and other things pertinant to keeping the rescue going. We are spread throughout NY - Monticello area, Syracuse and surrounding areas, Montgomery, Schenectady, Saratoga & Albany counties. We have even started a branch in Maryland. Some from our rescue even volunteer at the Saratoga County Animal Shelter. Last year the number of adoptions at MMR were 120. This year, just since January 1st we have reached 50. The more fosters that join - the more lives we can save.

How do you choose which pets to save - how do you find out there are pets who are need of saving? We have constant pleas and emails daily for help. Unfortunately, some people wait until their dogs become so aggresive that there is no way for us to help. We work with shelters here and in the South. Some get so overcrowded they have no choice but to euthanize. We get a list, we get assessments and we pull them ASAP. It is amazing how a dog ends up on the euthanasia list only because of a cold or the way they act due to being so frightened. They enter our rescue and we can tell they are so thankful. They end up being wonderful dogs - they deserve to have a good life.

How many people do you need to step up and volunteer to drive each leg of the journey to get those pets to NY? Some dogs come via paid transport at $100 or more per dog. I personally use a volunteer free transport called Fur Baby Freedom Transport. They are all everyday people using their vehicles, their time and their gas to get the animals from point A to point B. I pull many dogs from Demopolis, Alabama - it is very rural and there are not many fosters or adopters out there. My transported dogs use approx.16 legs to get here (meaning every 1-1 1/2 hours dogs are traded to the next driver). There is also a Volunteer foster that will keep the dogs overnight until the next morning when they usually hit the road again by 7am. Some drivers will take 2-3 legs of the journey to make it happen - now that is pure dedication right there! There are volunteer monitors during the entire trip that are in constant contact with each person and keep the group informed of the ETA of each leg of the journey as well as help with any issues we may have along the way. Transport is a major part of rescue. I volunteer for any transport team coming through my area that I can help. Sometimes driving for 1-2 hours just to get to them. These dogs lives depend on us. Many times I have gladly stepped up and driven the last 4-5 hours to help get my dogs to my home.

Do you have fosters lined up for each pet and/or forever homes before you go? We always have a foster lined up before we can take a dog. We have no shelter so dogs are all brought into our homes, crate trained, housebroken and whatever else we can do for the dogs. Every home usually has their own dogs, so it is very important to know the temperment when choosing which dog goes where. They have to be screened first as they may not like females/males/cats - they may be too large or rough for small children. Some of us take in more than 1 foster dog at a time. We network the dogs on FB, our website, word of mouth & flyers prior to getting them into our home. Applications come in ahead of time most of the time. We do phone interviews with a standard form, personal references, vet references, home visits and of course the meet and great. A successful meet and great is a must for the dog to stay if the fosters/adopters have other pets.

What is the most amount of pets you have ever brought back to NY at one time? This past January I got a message for a female rottie in MS with 9 - 4 week old pups. The owner died and she was running free, they were afraid she would be shot. We had her vetted and pulled them all to come north. Mamma Mia and the pups were transported to Roanoke VA. Another foster mom and I drove there as we didn’t want Mom and pups to stress from so much handling. With open arms we were offered to stay the night at the foster home and left early in the am with all 10 dogs for the 9 hour drive back home. They have all since been adopted!!

Gas money would be much appreciated as a donation when driving to pick up these dogs right? Are there any other donations needed that would help MRR? Many of us spend countless hours driving for our rescue. Many never ask for reimbursement for gas. We also all purchase all of our own dog food. Many already have dogs so we try to keep them all on the same food unless there is a special need. Any donations given to our rescue help so much. We take dogs with heartworm, some need training and they always need vetting. Many times our dogs have 2 to 3 times the adoption fee in them. We are NOT about the money. We are all about saving each dog’s life. It’s an endless battle trying to raise money and we are constantly organizing fundraisers, as donations are the only way we can keep this going.

Besides the MRR website and Facebook page where people can check out available pets, does MRR attend a lot of Pet Adoption Clinics? One of our biggest supporters is Pet Supplies Plus in Glenville NY. We bring our dogs there to adoption clinics two Saturdays per month. They also have a bin displayed for us by the registers, we are always in need of things for the dogs, collars/treats/ toys, etc. All the employees get involved when we are there - it is always a special day for our dogs. We will also be attending PetAPalooza in Ballston Spa, The City of Amsterdam’s Spring Fling and the Canine Carnival in Syracuse, NY in August, which happens to be the biggest animal adoption event in NY - everyone who loves pets should go, it’s a great day for all!

Can you describe the feeling when a pet you know you have saved from euthanasia is brought to you to go home? Saving the life of a dog is unlike any other feeling in the world. When you see a picture of an emaciated thrown away dog and the only thing they need is love you have to stand up. The anxiety you feel when you know they are on their way never to be harmed again is overwhelming. You have nothing but tears the day you meet, you wonder how did that dog’s family just toss them away? You ask the dog, did you bark too much? Did you pee on the floor? Did you get too old or too big? It is a very heartbreaking and sometimes it is hard not to feel hate and confusion toward the prior owner. Dogs love - and they love immensely. To get an application for a dog that was perhaps a week ago on the to-die list and to hear the excitement and love in the adopter’s voice is really such a high. They come and they go - I dont think I have not cried at any adopters home while saying good bye and thank you to each and every one. These dog’s will now be FUREVER LOVED and never dumped again. Rescue is one of the hardest things I have ever done - the time, the pain, the anger are all there - but on the other hand it is something that has changed the lives of all of us and we wouldn’t have it any other way. It takes a TEAM to do this. I think I work with the best team there is - Mountain Rottie Rescue of NY!! Check out Mountain Rottie Rescue on

Tank’s Journey to Safety Tank is the perfect example of why animal advocates go the extra mile to get pets to safety. Sometimes from across the country, in the knick of time, they save a pet from euthanasia. It takes an army of dedicated people to bring a dog home. Tank was one of 63 dogs chained outside at a shelter in Alabama. This town didn’t adopt Rottweilers out. He was spotted a few months ago by a girl named Misty. She went to the shelter to bring a bunch of dogs to safety since they didn’t adopt Rotties out. When she got there a new director had stepped in and put down all but three dogs. Tank was one of the three that survived. Two months before Misty went to “pull” the dogs to safety, she had left Tank with a sock monkey (see first photo). When she went back weeks later - he still had it. That sock monkey, (seen on the right with Tank), traveled with him on his journey to New York and has become a symbol of his second chance. Many thanks go out to the people on each leg of the journey - from his original “pull” to safety, his first safe home while waiting for transport and to all the transporters along the way, including Penny Ross, who currently fosters Tank at her home in Hagaman, NY with 8 other dogs.

Here are photos of his journey...

Tyson is well loved by everyone at the shelter and was given a birthday cake for his 6th Birthday recently. Tyson was found after being dumped near Beardslee Castle. He spent the first three years of his life with a few different owners and sadly was set up for failure with every one.Tyson loves to play, go for rides and especially loves to swim! Tyson is amazing with other dogs his own size, but he does need a home with no cats. He loves people and is great with kids, but because of his size, he should be with older kids (8 and up). He is also completely housebroken and very obedient!

Come to the shelter and meet him today! 133 Hilltop Road, Sprakers, New York • (518) 673-5670 Hours: Tue:12-5; Wed:12-7; Thu.-Sat. 12-5

“The Nose Knows” By having “Waddles” nose searching out different places a tick can end up in the nostril area. If you cannot remove the tick and get it’s whole head out, it’s time to call your veterinarian. When looking at a picture of a tick you can see a small “spider-like” creature. However, when the tick attaches itself to your pet it swells up with blood from your pet. Sometimes by the time you see it it is a grayish/blue color, looking like a skin tag or growth. Ticks may have been attached for a week or more, depending on their size. If you find a tick on your body be sure and call your doctor for removal. He will put you on an antibiotic for precaution, as Lyme Disease is very much on the run. If you do not apply these products correctly they will not help in repelling these pests.

Mike and I are fortunate to have met some incredible people throughout our lives and especially since we began printing the placemats and publishing this magazine. One couple Phil and Lorrie Venneman, owner’s of Phil’s Truck and Auto Repair in Gloversville, are two of those people. Mike had the pleasure of getting to know them while delivering uniforms to Phil and Lorrie for 15 years at his full time job, and I have been lucky enough to know Lorrie since she hugged him at Curtis Lumber’s PetAPalooza the first year we were doing the mats. (inside joke, as she saw the look on my face and THEN Mike introduced us, LOL!) Lorrie was one of the people instrumental in starting the Regional Shelter in Gloversville and is still a member now. Lorrie and Phil have been adopting older dogs for a very long time! Whenever a dog makes it to their home, however he/she ended up there, as Lorrie says, they have found their last home, where they will get the care they need to live out their lives well loved - and they have! Read on to see just how many there have been over the years, most recently Sheila, who had Lorrie’s heart from the moment they met.

Don’t worry Sheila you’ve made it home!

Many dogs have found love and a happy life in Lorrie and Phil’s house. Here - Lorrie explains her love for them...

Sheila was brought into the shelter in January 2016 after being found behind a dumpster in Gloversville. She was weak, missing fur and had difficulty walking. She had a large mass on her shoulder. She was found to be deaf and her eyesight impaired. It was later discovered who her owner was and that he had left her behind when he moved to Syracuse. It was the same person that neglected a dog a year prior and that dog ended up passing away after a few months being in our shelter. We were able to get her to the vet for an exam and some medicine for her arthritis. She was put into foster home for a few months as the shelter was not the best place for her. She then underwent surgery to have her tumor removed and get spayed. Luckily all of her blood work was outstanding and she was otherwise in good health. Sheila had a subcutis fibrosarcom - low grade removed and went back to foster to recover. She healed nicely and was doing well. Then Lorrie Venneman of the Regional Animal Shelter in Gloversville and her husband Phil decided to foster her. Once she got to Lorrie’s house, Lorrie and Phil knew she wasn’t going anywhere and adopted her! Sheila now has 2 brothers, Winston and Mersh and several kitty siblings and she’s doing great. The cancer may come back but so far so good! She is estimated to be about 11 or so.

Animals have always been a part of my life from childhood on. My love for the seniors started in 2010 with a dog named “Buck”. He was a 10 year old dog we found neglected, starving and crying in pain. I jumped a fence - got caught by the owners and told them I was taking Buck to get him help because he was dying. In the pouring rain my wonderful husband, (thank goodness he puts up with me), went back with me to rescue this beautiful but very sick 10 year old husky named Buck. That’s where the love for the seniors all started. I realized they needed someone to stand up for them - (after a week at Dr. Chester’s Buck survived for another 3 years with us) - how could anyone just let a poor animal go like that because he/she is old? Since 2010 there have been a few more. Next was a 13 year old rottie/pittie mix named Boone. He passed away at the ripe old age of 16.5 years. Then came a girl named Chance. She was Lorrie Venneman with Sheila and Mersh turned over to me after being left behind in a cold trailer after her mom and dad divorced. He would stop once, maybe twice a day if she was lucky to feed her and let her out. Unfortunately we were only blessed with our Chancey Girl for about a year. She developed a tumor in her stomach and passed away in her sleep. Then, in between, we had an 8 year old rottie named Noel. I actually watched her grow up from a pup - I’m friends with her previous owner. So when Noel needed a new home at 8 years old, we had our Snotwell (as we lovingly called her - when she sneezed - look out!.) Noel was with us from 2012 until 2014. Then came handsome Mersh who is, I believe, going to be 13. Last but not least Sweet Sheila! They all take a while getting to me sometimes but once they do it’s the last new home they will ever have to go through. The seniors just seem to really understand and appreciate everything you do for them. It’s an awesome feeling when one of them doesn’t feel good and the other two know and they check on whoever it is that’s down and out. I went into taking in seniors knowing I may not have them for a long time and it doesn’t make it any easier to loose them - but the peace and feeling I have when they lay their head down in my arms for the last time, that is when I know that however little time they had with my family they really, really knew what it was to be loved. Sheila has fit into the family perfectly. Her brother Winston actually has her chasing him and running a little. It is safe to say that Sheila, Mersh and Winston and any dog lucky enough to find it’s way to Lorrie and Phil’s home is in a really, really good place to live out their years.

Are You Ready to Adopt?

When adopting, you are making a commitment to care for an animal for the rest of his life—that could mean 10 to 15 years for dogs and up to 20 years for cats. As you go through lifestyle changes such as moves, the birth of children and new jobs, your animal will remain a permanent part of your life. If circumstances change, will you still be able to care for your pet?

• Owning a dog or cat costs more than the initial adoption fee.

Food, veterinary care, spaying or neutering and proper identification—that means a collar with tags and a more permanent form of ID such as microchipping—can add up.

• Time is also a factor.

Dogs benefit from several hours of exercise and companionship every day. Cats are healthiest and happiest indoors and love to be treated to energetic play sessions. If your work demands that you travel often, or if you're out of the house most days and evenings, this may not be the right time to adopt.

• It is important to consider...

whether your children, along with your resident pets, are able to accommodate the addition of a cat or dog to your household.

Which Pet Is Right for You?

Your personality and lifestyle, along with challenges such as space restrictions and amount of time spent at home, should be explored to determine what pet is right for your household. Research different breeds and ask shelter staffers for guidance—they're experts at making perfect matches! To learn more about adopting a pet go to: www.aspca.org or consult a veterinarian Note: ABOUT The content in thisinmagazine for informational and educational purposes and is not intended to replace the advice of your own 36Please - CRAZY PETS Fulton &isMontgomery Counties & Beyond Mayonly 2016 veterinarian or doctor. Please consult your own veterinarian if you have specific questions about any medical or social issues your pet may have.

There are so many shelters, rescue organizations and people who help shelter pets every single day. We regret that we could not portray even more of them in this issue. But you can help! If you know of a shelter or rescue that we could portray on the pages of our next issue, please let us know. Send a Facebook message, an email or call us. We will start compiling stories and information right away for next time.

CRAZY ABOUT PETS in Fulton & Montgomery Counties & Beyond May 2016 - 37

Montana’s Long Wait for the Perfect Forever Home

Sometimes a pet enters a shelter and seems like a perfect family pet, sure to be adopted out quickly. This is what happened when Ayres Memorial Shelter in Sprakers, NY took in Montana in October of 2012. For reasons no one could understand it took 3 years for Montana to be adopted. Finally he has that forever family he waited 3 years for and he is enjoying a life of being loved - with not only a wonderful home but a weekend home as well! This is Montana’s story...by Marissa Glasser Montana came into the shelter on October 22, 2012 after being seen running at large for a few days. Montana came in a mere 45 pounds and not sure of what was going on. He had a recently injured back paw with what seemed like a broken toe. He received routine vetting and everything was checked out as okay to heal all on it’s own. Montana is a unique light brindle boy and the staff at Ayres were sure someone would come looking for him, but no one ever did. And once he went up for adoption, we thought the same thing - that he would be scooped right up. He loved people, loved to play, was great on a leash and was absolutely gorgeous. But he got looked over, and looked over again and again.

Montana at Ayres Memorial Shelter his home for 3 years

One day we shared him on facebook and the right organizations must have seen it. Steve Caporizzo’s Pet Connection once again decided to share one of our beautiful dogs. Montana was the lucky boy. From there, John Gray also shared Montana’s story. Thousands of people saw Montana’s picture but only a few calls came in, most of which weren’t the best fit for our boy. Then one day about two weeks later, we got the email from the perfect couple who wanted to give him a home! They met him and instantly fell in love! Montana went from living in a kennel for over three years to having TWO homes of his own. Montana was adopted and left the home he had for 3 years a healthy and happy 64 pound ham! He now has one home for during the week, and a weekend lake house all to his own! He couldn’t have been more lucky and we couldn’t be more thankful.

It was a bittersweet day when Montana finally left the shelter, all of us at Ayres couldn’t be happier for him and his lovely family! Montana at home with his Dad
