Welcome Fellow Animal Lovers...
December 2015
To this issue of “Crazy About Pets in Fulton & Montgomery Counties & Beyond”
We are thrilled to be able to bring you this heartfelt, informative magazine showcasing local shelters and businesses right here in our hometowns! There are so many wonderful pet loving people in Fulton & Montgomery counties and surrounding areas that we have had the pleasure of meeting over the past few years. We felt it was time to take our placemat & graphic design business one step further and showcase some of the many shelters in our area. Here you will find some heartwarming stories of adoption, fostering, tips from a local vet, dog trainers, groomers and so much more. As many of you know, we have been designing and distributing placemats to help bring attention to local shelter pets for over three years now. Every time we deliver a new batch to the restaurants, we see joy on the faces of the staff. People are just excited about pets in general and shelter pets really tug at their heart strings. We would love to think that everyone who considers adopting a pet into their family would check out a local shelter or rescue group first; These are the pets who through no fault of their own end up confused and lonely waiting for what could be as long as one year (see Joelle’s story on page 11) for their forever family to find them. Our own dog Brownie (who passed over the Rainbow Bridge in Oct. 2014) has been our inspiration all along. She came to us 11 days after the death of our beloved dog Lexi. She was “saved” from going into a shelter as a result of a domestic dispute. The truth is “she saved us”. We will always be grateful for having been blessed with such loyal, loving companions. As any dog or cat lover would tell you, one way to heal a broken heart after losing a pet is to adopt yet again if possible. We did just that 3 weeks after we lost our Brownie. Tobie now holds his own special spot in our ever expanding hearts and we just could not picture our lives without a pet. Add three beautiful cats to the mix and you have a household that is just plain “Crazy About Pets”. We truly hope you not only find our magazine informative but that it inspires you to adopt, to volunteer, to donate or perhaps just to reflect on what pets have meant to you in your lifetime. There are 3 pages of advertisements, (Pages 20, 21, & 22), featuring the restaurants who use our placemats to help us help pets find forever homes. Check them out, go visit, have a bite to eat and thank them for what they do for our area shelters. Our Thanks go out to ALL of them and to every contributor and advertiser who have supported our endeavors, both the placemats and this magazine! Last, but certainly not least, we cannot possibly thank the many, many shelter workers and volunteers in this area who put their heart and soul into making sure these wonderful creatures feel the love they are so deserving of - these are amazing people! Happy Reading! Linda & Mike Palmieri

* Please Note: There are so many more shelters and rescue organizations in this area. We are sorry we could not portray every one of them in this issue. If you know of one you would like to see featured in a future issue of this magazine, please call us at (518) 842-6532 or or email us at: creativityunleash123@yahoo.com

The ultimate goal of the shelter staff and volunteers is to find loving, caring, forever homes for the animals in their care. You are invited to join them in their work and quest. Perhaps you can volunteer some spare time, or are lucky enough to be in a position to contribute some cash. Maybe you have items you no longer need or use for which our animals would be grateful. Or, maybe you can add a couple of extra items to your regular shopping list. No contribution is too small, and we can promise you that no one will appreciate it more.

4 - CRAZY ABOUT PETS in Fulton & Montgomery Counties & Beyond December 2015
Dedicated to finding responsible, forever homes for all the pets in their care - the MCSPCA has created a thorough adoption process which helps achieve this goal. This process includes a check of veterinary history records on any pets you currently have, and a home visit. If you rent your home, they require written proof (letter or lease) from your landlord that you are allowed to have pets. We undertake this kind of thorough review to ensure that animals who have already been discarded at least once will never have to experience this again.

Hours: Mon – Sun: 7am – 9am & 4pm – 6pm or by appt.
www.regionalanimalshelter.org The Annex in Gloversville, NY turned 3 this year! On May 18, 2012 the doors of the Annex were officially opened to the public. A lot has happened since then... We have met a lot of amazing dogs, who were just either visiting or waiting for their forever home. In fact, we’ve met over 400 of them… and have adopted over 150 of those dogs to their forever homes!! We have also had the extreme fortune of getting to know many outstanding individuals, families, and organizations that have supported us in every way possible, be it supporting our fund-raisers, donating, adopting, fostering, volunteering, and even just sharing pictures of our dogs and events on Facebook. We are so blessed to be in our community – the city of Gloversville and its surrounding area has made it possible for Regional to do what we do for these dogs.
We thank the Community for their support and hope that the next three years are as incredible as the first three! Adopting from Regional Animal Shelter is an easy process - we will help you find the dog that is perfect for you and your family. It involves finding out a little about you and your home, visiting with the dogs and talking with one of the animal shelter professionals. After you have met and decided which amazing animal you would like to adopt, we will ask that you fill out an application. Applications are available at the shelter; they must be completed in full and returned to the shelter office. If you are unable to make it to the shelter, please contact us and we will send you an application. From there you can expect:
You will be called for an interview and a home visit will be scheduled at that time. If you currently own other pets you will also need to schedule a meet and greet between the animals. This will ensure that your family members will all get along with your new addition and can be done at the shelter if preferred. You must have proof of vaccination before your dog can be let into the shelter’s yard or if we meet at your home and/or at a neutral location. The animal adoption fee is $195 for dogs. The animal adoption fee includes the spay/neuter, microchipping, heartworm testing, Rabies vaccination, 5-in-1 vaccination (against canine distemper, canine hepatitis, adenovirus cough (kennel cough), parainfluenza, and parvovirus), Lyme vaccination, nail trim and flea treatment (if necessary). Payment can be made by cash, check or credit card and is due prior to or at the time of adoption.
Stop In for a Visit!
How do you find the shelter? The shelter is located at 117 W. Fulton St. in Gloversville. Coming from the intersection of Main and Fulton Streets, head West on Fulton. Take a left into the GTS parking lot (after the first light} and drive to the back. You will see a green building with a fenced in yard – that’s it!
With the help of our supporters we are planning to build a new full service facility in the community. We broke ground for our new building on October 26th, 2013 and are currently accepting donations toward it’s completion. The new facility will include: Separate dog and cat rooms with radiant heat flooring, accommodations for large animals, an on premise surgical room to offer low-cost spay and neuter programs, a boarding facility, a grooming area, visiting rooms for potential adopters, a lobby with a gift shop, a memorial garden and a dog walk. PLEASE HELP US BUILD OUR COMMUNITY’S SHELTER... To begin Phase One of building, we will require $100,000 in funding, which we will be securing with both grants and donations. To have a completed facility, we believe it will cost us between $500,000 and $600,000.
We need funds to build! No donation is too small! Every cent counts and is greatly appreciated!!
BUY A BRICK!
How does this brick thing work?
These laser-engraved bricks are a wonderful way to honor a cherished pet or loved one, and will last a lifetime. We are offering bricks in three different sizes with three different set donation amounts: 4×8 for $100, 8×8 for $200, and 12×12 for $400. Prices include text and optional artwork – you can use either the clipart provided or upload your own photo. All proceeds from the brick will go into Regional’s Building Fund, and the purchased brick will be used to create a memorial dog walk at the new facility on Maple Ave. in Johnstown, NY. If you would like to commemorate your brick purchase, you are able to purchase a replica tile containing text and artwork for $20 (which will go to you, not the shelter!). You can securely purchase a brick online or use the form found on the Shelter’s website at www.regionalanimalshelter.org. You can see our sample brick in person at any of our fundraisers (real bricks will not have the company name printed on it.) If you have any questions, please contact us at build@regionalanimalshelter.org

Receiving donations of food, cleaning supplies, and blankets allows us to put the money we get to other uses, like getting medical care for our animals and building our new facility. Listed below are some of the things we can always use! We are unable to accept opened food or treats.
Dry dog food (preferably Pedigree – most of our dogs seem to eat it and tolerate it well but anything works) We also would prefer food without artificial colors, as they tend to be loaded with preservatives and can cause health issues! Grain-free dog food (with no corn, yeast, or beef) for our poor allergy sufferers! Canned dog food (we use Alpo but we’re not picky!) dog treats (no rawhides, no propylene glycol - check soft treats and nothing made in China please) peanut butter (smooth – not chunky) leashes and collars – mostly large (used are perfectly fine!) dog toys – all sizes, ropes are best • Nylabones – all sizes • Kong toys – large and extra-large, please blankets and comforters • bath towels • dog shampoo • paper towels garbage bags (30 or 33 gallon size as well as kitchen size) laundry soap • dryer sheets • liquid dish soap • antibacterial cleaners Heartguard – 26+ pounds and 51+ pounds • Advantix – all sizes • bleach Kennelsol, or any other veterinary grade disinfectant Wal-Mart gift cards (used to buy medication and office supplies) Price Chopper gift cards (used to buy medication) • stamps • copy paper • envelopes

CRAZY ABOUT PETS in Fulton & Montgomery Counties & Beyond December 2015 - 9
To Foster an Animal is a great Gift and Act of Kindness. Animals hold a Special Place in your Heart and You make a World of Difference in their Lives!
Words from a foster mom... Brittany Palmieri with her dog Petey, a Registered Therapy Dog
Brittany is a Veterinary Assistant at Country Valley Veterinary Clinic and is studying to be a Vet Tech. She lives with her husband Dan, their three cats Tillie, Patrick and Stoopie and their dog, Petey (featured on our cover). She has been fostering dogs for over 2 years now through Out of the Pits, Inc. and has guided many wonderful pets to their forever homes. Each and every one of them has left a pawprint on her heart and Petey’s too!
Pictured here are photos of foster dogs Brittany has helped on their journey to forever homes. 1st Foster! Pebbles
A POEM TO MY FOSTER DOG By Diane Morgan
I am the bridge, Between what was and what can be. I am the pathway to a new life. I am made of mush, Because my heart melted when I saw you, Matted and sore, limping, depressed Lonely, unwanted, afraid to love. For one little time you are mine. I will feed you with my own hand. I will love you with my whole heart. I will make you whole. I am made of steel. Because when the time comes, When you are well, and sleek, when your eyes shine, And your tail wags with joy Then comes the hard part.
Every single dog that has ever come into our lives as fosters have made us smile! Some we simply connect more with than others. But for that time that they are with you, they leave something special behind…something special that we will remember for the rest of our lives. Sometimes it is amazing to think about the number of lives that one single family or person is able to save, simply by making an attempt at fostering. It is easy to assume that you wouldn’t be able to have the heart for it, that you would never be able to let them go. But honestly, it is a bittersweet experience. There is nothing like seeing the smiles and excitement on the new parents faces. I remember the feeling well as I picked up my boy from his foster home. I remember thinking that I just couldn’t wait to give him the best life that I could give him. And I can see that in the new parents I now meet - it is a beautiful thing! They get new toys, new siblings, new parents, and sometimes new names. We get updates on many of them, seeing them comfortable and happy in their new homes is gratifying. And allowing our hearts and home to be a stepping stone to them finding their new life, allows us to bring in and help another. There will always be another that needs it. So my heart will always be open for the next one. While fostering isn’t for everyone, if you have the space in your home, I would encourage you to try it. If you aren’t ready to commit to adopting, try fostering! Who knows, you may be like us and fall into an entirely new world that brings new happiness every day. And even if you fail, you aren’t really failing anything! Just ask the dog(s) that you have helped along the way.
Foster homes are always needed in our area shelters. Fostering an animal pays BIG in that you will receive loving kisses, long cuddles and endless adventures. Just take one look at the foster pet you saved, the fact that you may be the sole reason why this beautiful creature is still on this earth, and your heart will melt - you will be filled with pride and joy.
When you foster a pet the rescue you foster for covers the cost of all of the medical care. There can be small incidental expenses such as pet bowls, some toys, blankets, etc. but for the most part your pet will come with everything you will need. The rescue will usually provide the food as well but if you can afford to pay for the food for your foster you can take a tax deduction on this expense if the rescue is a 501(c)3. Most new foster’s biggest fear is of becoming a “foster failure”. If that should happen most rescues will give you first choice in adopting the pet. Although it is very hard to learn to “let go” of the wonderful pet who has been in your home - you will realize that when the perfect family does come along, then the cycle can begin again and you can foster another pet - one more life to save. This information was taken from www.fosteringsaveslives.org Please go to their website to learn more about fostering.
By Brittany Palmieri
If you would like to foster a pet, get in touch with a shelter or pet rescue organization and ask how! Petey helps by guiding and loving each one as his own sister or brother!
I will let you go - not without a tear, But without a regret. For you are safe forever A new dog needs me now.
Bogie
Fostering. It’s a word that people hear and immediately think that they have the inability to do it. Honestly, it’s what we thought too! When the idea was initially brought up to me by the adoption coordinator whom I worked with to adopt Petey, I told her that we would fail. Little did we know that just over 2 years later, we wouldn’t have failed a single time! In this instance, there is certainly nothing wrong with failing. To fail means to have given a new life to an animal that had no where to go…failing seems like the wrong word!

Almost 1 year at the shelter!
Joelle is a very sweet girlie who walks great on a leash and loves attention. Joelle would do best as an only pet, as she does not like cats or other dogs. She wants to keep all the attention to herself. Joelle loves people and kids over 12. She has been on overnights with volunteers and is very well behaved. Do you have room in your home for this wonderful lady?
In June of 2013 we featured Joelle on our placemat. She had been at the shelter for almost a year until she was seen on the placemat and adopted by Norbert Slezak.
Joelle’s new dad, Norbert Slezak, was at Cronies Restaurant in Hagaman when he saw Joelle on the placemat. He decided to go visit her at the Montgomery County SPCA and realized that she was the Joelle with her dad, dog he wanted to adopt! Joelle and Norbert are now enjoying being inseparable - they go everywhere together. loved at home! Joelle may have had to wait long for her forever home but it seems it was worth it!
Not long after that, Norbert’s Daughter & Son-in-law Pat & Bob Hasenfuss saw Reyna on a placemat and decided they wanted to go visit her at the MCSPCA. Reyna had come in to the shelter with 3 beautiful puppies. Rose Poole fostered the puppies and they were adopted to wonderful homes. Reyna was chilling in the office at the shelter waiting for her forever home when Pat & Bob came in and instantly fell in love with her! Now she has her forever home too!

From the Heart of a Rescuer
Clay’s Adoption Story
I think very few people actually set out to become animal rescuers. I believe many of those that are have encountered a pivotal moment in their life involving an animal and something inside them changed. It was at that moment that they realized that they had that very unique and special gift that only rescuers have. It's something that is part of you, something in your DNA that makes you do what you do. Most people don't Renee Earl, Volunteer and even know they have it in them until it's Treasurer of Regional Animal Shelter with Petey (formerly Prancer) called upon, and once that resource Photo Credit: Jessica Painter Photography within them is tapped, then it never goes away. Rescue is so much more than saving animals, you are constantly learning- learning about animals, learning about people and mostly learning about yourself. You find yourself doing things you never thought you had the strength to do, wanting to give up but somehow continuing to fight. You realize that there is something out there more important than yourself, and so much bigger than just you. You do your part, save the animals you can, celebrate the wins, cry over the losses and at the end of the day you accept that the work that you do will never be finished. Animal rescue is not about getting accolades or recognition and it's far from glamorous. Most of what you do is done without anyone ever knowing you did anything, except for many a few people and the animal you saved. It's certainly not a life that's meant for everyone, but for those of us who rescue, it is life we would not change."

Clay was brought into the Regional Animal Shelter in Gloversville (see pages 8 & 9 for shelter info) after being tormented by kids - they squirted him with squirt guns and threw cans at him. He was extremely fearful and was nippy. He needed special care that the shelter is unable to provide so the Board agreed to send him to Jeannie Oakley at Paw It Forward Dog Training, LLC. to be rehabilitated. While Clay was receiving direction and love from Jeannie and the staff at Paw It Forward, a cute little dog named Dinky came in to receive some training as well. Throughout the next few weeks the two dogs became close friends during their training sessions. Dinky’s mom Kim, when going to one of his training classes, invited her dad Ben along to watch. She told him he would see how Dinky had been interacting with Clay and how Clay had helped him. Ben really enjoyed the class and liked Clay too. He and his wife Roberta had not owned a dog for years. The next day Ben was out with a few friends eating at Miss Johnstown Diner in Johnstown. He looked down at the placemat in front of him and spotted Clay on it. Having just interacted with Clay the day before - it was at that moment Ben felt it was a sign - that Clay was meant to adopted by him and his wife. They did just that! Now Clay has a wonderful forever home where he is loved for the special dog he is. Since Dinky is Ben and Roberta’s daughter’s dog, he still gets to see Dinky too. Ben and Roberta are thrilled to have a dog in their lives again and are enjoying Clay very much! Another Happy Ending (Beginning)
This is a perfect example of why the placemats work exactly as we had hoped they would from the beginning...to help bring pets home! We appreciate everyone who helps make it happen!

The Importance of Understanding Anesthesia One of the things I hear most frequently as a veterinarian is “Will my pet be safe under anesthesia?, I’m afraid to put him under!” I understand the fear pet owners feel when confronted with the necessity for anesthesia. Anesthesia is, for the most part, something most pets will need to undergo sooner or later in their lives. I would like to provide you, your pet’s guardian, with a “tool kit” for understanding how to keep your pet as safe as possible. First of all, please realize that a serious complication/death rate from properly managed anesthesia in a healthy animal is really quite low (less than 1 in 1000 for healthy animals). Even in the ill, the rate of death is still around the 1% mark. That said, there are some basic things I recommend to safeguard your pet. First of all, all animals should have a thorough examination prior to the anesthesia to pinpoint and address any health concerns there may be. Additionally, I recommend basic bloodwork taken within 3 months of a procedure. This blood work will be more comprehensive in the older or sick pet. Next, I would recommend you ask your veterinarian the following questions: • Do you do a full examination the day of the procedure? • Do you calculate anesthesia by weight of my pet? • Is a licensed individual administering any and all sedatives and anaesthetics? • Is a licensed individual monitoring my pet from the first injection to the time my pet is fully awake and his temperature is back to normal? • Are you protecting the airway for surgeries? • Will my pet have an IV catheter in place? • How about IV fluids? • Do you provide heat support for all procedures? • What sort of heat support? • Can I view your surgical suite? • Do your doctors scrub, gown, glove, cap and mask? • Is the patient sterilely prepped? • Do you monitor anesthesia with advance techniques, including pulse oximetry, ECG, and blood pressure at a minimum? • Do you monitor the patients temperature throughout the procedure AND the recovery?

Adopting a Pet Bird So you decided that perhaps a bird may be a good choice for a pet for your family. Some people mistakenly think that pets kept in cages require little more than food, water and clean surroundings. In fact, no animal should ever be confined to a cage 23 or 24 hours every day. Birds, especially exotics, like parrots, cockatoos and macaws will require a great deal of daily attention and interaction. Birds are extremely intelligent, they can be easier to care for than other pets, and take to training well, they require little grooming are quite social, as well as inexpensive to feed. If you are thinking of adopting a pet bird, please do your homework, go to a local pet store or veterinarian and get as much information as possible so you can make an informed decision.
Words from a Bird Owner
I grew up with birds. Our first bird was a little blue parakeet named Petey. We had many parakeets over the years. Parakeets usually don’t have a long lifespan, even under the best circumstances. I had a parakeet named Frankie. She lived about 15 years (until recently), which is pretty good for a little parakeet. Parakeets are fun and some can be trained. However, they are a bit skiddish and afraid. As an adult I was interested in a bigger, more substantial bird, with a longer life span. I bought a cockatiel from a local woman that hand raised all different kinds of birds. Sunny was hatched on July 7, 2003. I have had Sunny for 13 years now. I love having a bird as a pet. They are low maintenance, the vet bills are not that expensive and food cost is minimal. You can get a lot back from a bird if you put in the time. They are highly intelligent. My bird doesn’t talk but he mimics a lot of things. He mimics the Kristin Leonard with telephone ringing, the sound of the spoon clanging in the coffee cup when you stir it, kissy sounds, her Cockatiel, Sunny certain whistles and even my laugh at times. When my car pulls into the driveway he recognizes it and starts chirping loudly to greet me when I walk in the door. His chirps and his chatter fills up a room with life and sound. The bird had bonded with me. When I am not in the room he cries and carries on sometimes. Sometimes it can be a bit much, but if you cover the cage he settles down and quiets down a bit. You usually cover the bird’s cage at night so the bird can settle down and rest for the evening. You have to spend time with the bird for it to respond to you and bond with you. Some birds can be very neurotic. If you don’t pay them any attention they can pull out their own feathers and self destruct. It is also a good idea to have only one bird at a time. If there are two birds in a cage together, they tend to keep one another company and not pay much attention to you. I usually try and bring Sunny out for at least an hour a day. I can do things around the house and he will hang out on my shoulder. I can do the dishes and he will sometimes walk down my arm to get a little wet in the water. Subsequently, when I do the dishes without him, he tends to make some noise as if he is missing out on something. Sometimes he will just sit on the top of his cage and hang out. Birds preen and clean themselves. There is no grooming a bird other than maybe clipping it’s wings and trimming it’s talons/nails. Clipping a birds wings is up to the owner. It serves a couple of purposes. It would seem (at least in Sunny’s case) that when I clip his wings he isn’t as nippy, he is no longer dominate and is much more lovable and bonded to me. Also, if the bird happens to get out of the house, which is rare, he won’t go far. Also, the risk of injury flying around inside the house is greatly reduced. The cage should be cleaned once a week. I feed him fresh pellets and bird seed about every other day. He LOVES millet spray. Which is like bird candy. It’s like bird seed still on the stalk, like how it would be found in the wild. Sunny also loves treats. He is a carb addict. He loves toast, rice, cereal and noodles. He also loves cooked sweet potatoes and eggs. Some birds like fresh fruit and veggies but not Sunny. He doesn’t like anything cold no matter how many times I have tried to introduce new things. He prefers warm food and anything crunchy. I love Sunny. He has such a personality. He is smart and loving and easy to maintain. He fills our house with life and sound. He keeps me company and loves spending time with me. By Kristin Leonard

Pit Bulls are a largely misunderstood breed. Dogs are individuals and their breed alone does not define a dog’s temperament or personality. Unless a Pit Bull has been poorly bred or purposefully trained to attack humans, they generally love people. They are, in fact, one of the most loving, loyal, friendly and dedicated companions you can have. This letter was originally posted on Facebook by Nancy from The Pit Bull Princess. It was written to her by one of her customers, Karyn Badgett. What a heartwarming illustration of the incredible bond formed between humans and their Pitties and the power to rise above stereotyping the Pit Bull breed itself. This is an important message and with Karyn’s permission I am reprinting it in this magazine...
Silas
Some time ago, my husband and children surprised me with one of your pittie charms. I wear it daily with honor and pride, and this is why.....Four years ago my health began to spiral downward due to a rare, genetic disease compromising my mobility and critically endangering my heart, neurological and vascular systems. Alongside a trainer, we embarked on a search for a service dog candidate. In all honesty, a pit bull was not a consideration for me. Not in the least. I was guilty of the biased discrimination for many personal reasons. For many, many months we researched, met, tested and moved on from countless potentials from rescues to breeders. Nothing came to fruition. Within those months, I continued to pass, without care or acknowledgement, a particular dog in our city shelter. Then, we hapKaryn with Silas hazardly came to meet face to face. I learned his tragic story. One of a heroic rescue from certain death on an 8 lane freeway during morning rush hour. Neglected, abused, starving, and in an unfathomable panic mode of fight or flight. This incredible dog was battled wounded with barbed wire lacerations, hose fitting semi-circular slices all over his body, and a few bite mark scars. His "trash teeth" were indicative of a year and a half of survival mode. When encountered, he was dragging a broken tow chain and wearing a dilapidated collar, both strung tautly around his neck. His time to recover was lengthy, and he continued to be kennel stressed. Just like me, people passed him with out a second glance. Because he was so sound and "so special," a few shelter workers fought with all their might to keep him from euthanasia, but people were not interested in him. Though fed and clean, he still lacked manners, was still healing, and his traumatic history was evident through every ounce of his being. This coupled with his black coat, copper colored piercing eyes, defined muscled and large head, the typical seeker to adopt a dog showed no interest in him. His domineering presence of APBT and AmStaff mix could back up anyone. Formerly called by a different name, he was favored by the loving and tender hands of a devoted and deeply obligated volunteer at the shelter when we met. As my family attempted me to come "look at this dog," I hastily shrugged off the gesture with a "hell no." The penetrating stare of this particular dog paralyzed me into submission to go over for a quick pet. In mere seconds, this "beast" brought me to my knees. In that weeping moment, the whole world disappeared for both of us and we became one entity. Our fate was sealed to become a life of inexplicable beauty. Upon first greeting, Si weighed in at a meager 50 pounds. He now holds steady at 80 pounds and stands proud and very confident at just a whisker short of 24". He is magnificent in all aspects. Silas has been my partner in Mobility Assist and Medical Alert & Response Dog (Cardiac and Seizure) for 3 years now. Silas will be 5 years old in March. Through an intense journey of training together, which will always continue to be adapted to my changing needs, we have reached and surpassed "unattainable" milestones. Si has been an Ambassador for 505 Pit Crew (an inner city educational outreach for the betterment and wellness of pit bulls), we were an inspirational/model story for the Go Red for Women American Heart Association and has been featured in news releases-both radio and paper-regarding astounding transformations and potential of rescues and shelter animal adoptions. Our story remains framed on the entry wall of the city shelter's adoption office and he is lovingly recalled as one of the greatest adoption stories. Silas has also been acknowledged by our City Council and County Government for his role in life saving efforts when I experienced a dire medical crisis while driving. I cannot begin to count the times my life has teetered on the edge since Silas has been at my side, and he has held on to me without fail. Everyday I am beyond grateful for his sensing abilities and his unconditional love. If it wasn't for him, I would have lost my life to my illness two years ago. From retrieval to revival, I am here to vow his grandeur and miraculous abilities. He has brought me through a heart attack, a stroke and several episodes of heart failure, neurological challenges and crippling body changes. Silas has given me the stability to walk as well as the strength to thrive in a set of wheels Silas comforting when needed. Silas is a master of copious amounts assisting tasks, alerts and responses to help me negotiKaryn at the hospital ate life, my illness and my disabilities. He has given hope and confidence to my husband and children. They know with every breath I am safe and secure while Si is at my side. It has been quite a remarkable journey for us, and I am honored to call him my friend, my partner, my saving grace. He is my pawed soul mate. That said, I do have to share him now, though. Silas fell in love on Valentines Day of this year. Her name is Zuzu. She is a 3 1/2 year old American Bully. She was from repressing circumstances, used and kept as a breeding machine. She was considered worthy of making money but not valuable enough to receive any sort of love. Like Si, she was saved by merciful hands who began to offer her the life she deserved. Needless to say, the bond of Silas and Zu was immediate, and we brought her home. After all he has done for me and my family, the least we could do was reward him with such great love and companionship. Silas and Zu remain insepaSilas with his sister Zuzu rable. She practices her precious, unceasing nurturing instincts and devotion to each of us, and respectfully allows Si to continue with his work duties regarding me. I am indebted to the love of my pitties. My voice is loud and my faithfulness to their being is profound. There is no creature on this earth deserving of more respect, nor could any love of mere man ever match the love of a pit bull. My life is forever changed, and it is so beautiful. Thank you for all you do in awareness, joy and devotion to these incredible blessings. (as written to The PIt Bull Princess)

MY DOG GOT LOOSE...NOW WHAT? There are a few ways to prevent your dog from getting lost and some things to do if the dog is lost. 1. Make sure your dog knows its name and has a good “come” when called. Squat down and call her in a very outgoing voice. Don’t yell at the dog in a stern or angry voice. Do not chase the dog as they think it’s a game and will run! 2. Make sure if you have a fence or tie out that you check it occasionally for openings or tears. If you have an invisible fence make sure you check the batteries once a month. 3. Make sure your dog is wearing its license tag. Not only is it the law but it will help whoever finds your dog get it back to you faster. 5. Put your name and phone number on the dog’s collar. They make ones that rivet to the collar so it lays flat lessening it’s chance of falling off. 4. Consider getting your dog microchipped. Many of the local shelters offer this to the public for a low cost or you can ask your vet. Make sure the microchip info is always current.

Out of the Dog House Dog Training
1. Call your local authorities, animal control officer and/or shelters immediately! Give them as much info on the dog as possible including health issues or behavior issues along with the best number to reach you on should they find her. 2. Notify your vet and vets in the area incase she gets injured and is brought in for treatment. 3. Post info on local social media/craigslist type sites with a message “do not chase, just call with location” to your local police department/animal control officer. 4. Put food out around the same time every day in an area the dog has been seen regularly. Establish a pattern so the dog knows food is here before setting a trap. If you put out a trap too soon it could make them leave the area.

During my years as a professional dog trainer and throughout my life I have been asked by many clients and even other canine professionals why basic obedience is necessary for pet dogs. I am ALWAYS surprised by the question! It is like asking why it is a good idea to educate children. Just as we would not entertain the notion of NOT educating children, we must also develop the same attitude toward training and educating our dogs; we must assume the task when we adopt our new furry companion.
The reason is as simple as it is essential: human and canine lives depend on good training. Basic obedience training saves lives by preventing dangerous behaviors from developing in the first place. It’s the old adage, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Once a dog has learned rude, disrespectful behavior it is difficult to “fix” that behavior. It is so much easier on the humans and especially easier on the dog if basic training is part of their everyday life and in every interaction. As I tell my clients regularly, “You are ALWAYS training your dog; either you are training him to do what you actually want him to do or you are training him to do what you don’t want. There is no neutral on this point.” The reality is that as a professional dog trainer, my job is to train HUMANS how to communicate with their dogs. The dog will communicate with humans whether or not they are listening. If humans never learn the basics of how to listen to the dogs the results can be and too often are disastrous …usually for the dog. The good news is that learning basic training techniques is FUN for you and your canine companion. In addition, with a good trainer the cost is nominal for outstanding and life long results. And, most important of all, training builds the bridge that gives you the gift of a wonderful balanced relationship with your dog founded on good clear communication which is a priceless gift. So, what are the basics every dog needs to know?
#1 Sit
#2 Walk Nicely On A Leash
Every dog needs to sit when cued to do so by any human, including children. No excuses. It takes time and patience to teach the sit cue and there are many resources to show you how to that. Just do it and USE IT CONSTANTLY. A dog who is sitting can’t jump on guests, furniture or lunge on a leash. Humans just need to train THEMSELVES to use it. Think of it as plugging your dog in; when they are plugged in they are able to listen. When they are not plugged in they are like a balloon filled with air which is released suddenly and zooms everywhere in unpredictable chaos. Instead, tie a knot in that balloon and take some control of the dogs behavior. The dog WANTS you to tell them what to do. SIT! A good sit cue works the first time it is spoken, hand cues are a good help. You should not need to touch your dog to get them to sit. Treats are fine in early training, but fade to occasional treats once the dog knows what the sit cue means and does it well (95% compliance).
Walking calmly and happily with your dog is essential to the health and balance of any canine/human relationship. Now just to be clear, walking with you dog is THE most important activity you can do with your dog even if you exercise your dog in other beneficial ways such as jogging, agility, or nose work. All of these activities are fantastic however, they do not preclude the need inside your dog to WALK! The need in your dog to walk is primal. The need inside your dog to walk with their leader is equally primal. Our dogs NEED us to walk with them. In seeking a good basic obedience class be sure the class includes instruction regarding walking on leash. You know your dog knows how to walk well on a leash when you and your dog are both relaxed during the walk and the leash is relaxed as well. Please, walk with your dog. This is a foundational activity in your relationship with your dog.
#3 Down and Down Stay The down and down stay cues are vital to so many aspects of living happily with your dog. Some trainers now use the term “duration work” to describe the down stay. The importance of this cue cannot be overstated as it prevents overexcitement in dogs. A dog who can hold a down stay for 15 minutes is also a dog who understands he has been asked to relax. This behavior is amazing and can save a dog from being turned over to a local shelter or worse because of unmanageable behavior. Most dogs in shelters are there because they were never trained and have developed difficult behaviors which are often caused by overexcitement.
#4 Come! The Come cue, “recall”, is the final essential basic cue your dog MUST be trained to do as close to 100% of the time as possible. It is not possible to train a recall that is perfectly 100% because even well trained dogs will ignore you if the circumstances overwhelm their training. This is where humans need to make good choices FOR their dogs. Basically that means never put your dog in a situation in which they can ignore you when you call them to come to you. Keep them on a leash, behind a fence, or safely restrained in some way if there is ANY chance your dog could get away from you when you cue them to come to you. Dogs are naturally impulsive. They chase things; all sorts of things. Dogs also get frightened and they often run away from what scares them. Avoid making your dog another lost dog I share on Facebook hoping it will be found….alive. Use a leash when you take your dog anywhere that is not safely enclosed. It takes a lot of work and time to train a solid recall. Do it. Your dog’s life is worth it.
These four Essential Basics will support you in building a strong, rewarding, balanced relationship with your dog. It is well worth your time and money to invest in a good pet dog trainer to ensure that these essentials are well learned by you and your dog so that the foundation of your relationship is built on something solid and real upon which more can be built. Please avoid settling for haphazard commands delivered in anger and frustration which the dog doesn’t understand resulting in chaos and misery for everyone. If you want your dog to have a brain then simply make sure your dog is properly trained.

Feline Guardian Angels - Amsterdam Committed to protect the welfare of our community felines one cat at a time.
Feline Guardian Angels is an established formed 501(c)3 charitable organization staffed by a small group of less than 10 experienced volunteers. FGA is a spay/neuter advocacy strictly for feral and stray cats which serves our local Montgomery County community.
Our Mission: TO REDUCE: The Feral Cat overpopulation through spay/neuter/release (TNR) assistance.
TO ASSIST INDIVIDUALS TO HELP PROTECT: Homeless Cats from neglect, abuse, and abandonment.
TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) is a method of humanely trapping feral cats, having them spayed or neutered, vaccinated for rabies and then returning them to their colony to live out their lives. TNR also involves a colony caretaker who provides food/water, adequate shelter and monitors the cats’ health. This practice has been shown to be the least costly as well as the most efficient and humane way of stabilizing feral cat populations. The solution begins with each of us individually by always spaying or neutering our personal pets. To find out more about TNR please call 466-3478. If you would like to send a donation to Feline Guardian Angels: P.O. Box 462, Amsterdam, NY 12010
TO ADVOCATE: For their welfare through education and direct assistance to improve quality of life and stabilization of colonies.
TO PROMOTE: Greater appreciation of feral cats and human interactions/responsibility.
Feline Guardian Angels does not have a shelter. If you would like to contact FGA either call, email or facebook message them. Please remember to include your email address or phone information.

Grooming a dog who is having dental discomfort is difficult. As groomers, we have to hold the dogs face and nose to scissor or shave their faces. The dog will pull away and snap or bite at you. You may not get his facial area groomed, or he may get accidently cut while the scissors or clippers are in use. Drying his facial area may also be difficult. Some dental pain will increase if there is an ear or eye infection. Dogs will sometimes lick or “smack their lips” if their teeth are bothering them. Most of the time owners will notice a foul smell. By looking under his/her lips you will see red, swollen gums and brown, tartar stained teeth. Check his ears for a foul smell. You may even notice runny eyes or the dog’s inability to eat his hard, dry food. Groomers may advise making an appointment with your veterinarian. I hear people say that “it is so expensive”. After your vet does an initial evaluation they will give you a written estimate of the cost of the procedure. If teeth have to be extracted your vet will let you know of the added expense. Blood tests are usually taken before your pet’s actual dental procedure will be performed. Your doctor may send home pain medicine and antibiotics if he feels it is necessary. Please consider dental procedures long before the need arises. I was grooming a Cocker Spaniel who didn’t have any problems with her ears or eyes. Her teeth were beautiful! I looked up inside her nostrils to find a “tick!” Now that’s another story... By Tina Novak

Adopting an Older Dog
The Story of “Big O” (Odysseus) Jennifer Herbs and her husband Kelly Herbs and son Zach did just that in October of 2014 when they decided to adopt a wonderful dog named Odysseus “Big O”. He was estimated to be about 9 or 10 when they adopted him so he could live out his years in a country home. Throughout the next year Jennifer posted photos of “Big O” on Twitter #BigOChronicles and on her facebook page. This was a well loved dog indeed. Unfortunately “Big O” died this year, but not before he left wonderful memories of love in so many hearts.
Sometimes, through no fault of their own an "older dog" finds him/her self in need of a new forever home. While most people would be quick to harshly judge the previous owners for "leaving" their older dog, there are times that it may be in the best interest of the dog.
In Jennifer’s own words, here is why adopting an older dog can be a such a wonderful blessing...
Adopting a senior dog has many advantages, including: Older dogs have manners, are less destructive, can be taught new tricks, are great company for senior citizens, they are relaxing to hang out with and so very grateful for the kindness shown to them when they are adopted "again".
Although we only had 9 months with Big O in our family, we came to understand a very important thing…NO AMOUNT OF TIME would have been enough with him. 9 weeks, 9 months, 9 years or more. There are so many benefits to adopting an adult or aging dog too. Big O captivated us unlike any other pet we've ever owned and we feel we lived a quality, full lifetime with him. Adopting him during his Golden Year(s) was the best gift we could have ever offered him. And it was the best gift we've given ourselves as a family too. Our sweet Big Man enjoyed the clean air, fresh scents, relaxed country life, a loving human family, 2 loving canine companions and was surrounded in familiar comfort in his home when he passed over the Rainbow Bridge. And we feel his energy here around us still. Every. Single. Day.
Adopting an older dog can be such a truly amazing and wonderful journey. What you think you have given to the pet, they have given you back tenfold in unconditional love. Be their HERO, consider adopting an older dog or cat today and give him/her the forever home they deserve to live out their years.

Homes For Orphaned Pets Exist (H.O.P.E.)
Homes for Orphaned Pets Exist (H.O.P.E.) is a not for profit 501(c)(3) organization of volunteers from Saratoga and surrounding counties of New York State.
H.O.P.E. is dedicated to assisting previously abandoned, orphaned and neglected animals. Homes for Orphaned Pets Exist does not have a shelter or facility. They give these homeless animals a second chance for a wonderful life; to be part of a family, to be a therapy pet, or just to be someone’s best friend. Their ultimate goal is to find suitable adopters who will provide them with a lifelong commitment of love and care.

Are You Ready to Adopt?
When adopting, you are making a commitment to care for an animal for the rest of his life—that could mean 10 to 15 years for dogs and up to 20 years for cats. As you go through lifestyle changes such as moves, the birth of children and new jobs, your animal will remain a permanent part of your life. If circumstances change, will you still be able to care for your pet?
• Owning a dog or cat costs more than the initial adoption fee.
Food, veterinary care, spaying or neutering and proper identification—that means a collar with tags and a more permanent form of ID such as microchipping—can add up.
• Time is also a factor.
Dogs benefit from several hours of exercise and companionship every day. Cats are healthiest and happiest indoors and love to be treated to energetic play sessions. If your work demands that you travel often, or if you're out of the house most days and evenings, this may not be the right time to adopt.
• It is important to consider...
whether your children, along with your resident pets, are able to accommodate the addition of a cat or dog to your household.
Which Pet Is Right for You?
Your personality and lifestyle, along with challenges such as space restrictions and amount of time spent at home, should be explored to determine what pet is right for your household. Research different breeds and ask shelter staffers for guidance—they're experts at making perfect matches! To learn more about adopting a pet go to: www.aspca.org or consult a veterinarian Please Note: The content in this magazine is for informational and educational purposes only and is not intended to replace the advice of your own veterinarian or doctor. Please consult your own veterinarian if you have specific questions about any medical or social issues your pet may have. CRAZY ABOUT PETS in Fulton & Montgomery Counties & Beyond December 2015 - 31
