Introduction • Knowledge Nugget • Have you ever scratched your name onto a surface? Did you know you can make art this way? In this activity, explore a creative process known as scratch-board art and learn about tools used to do it. Scratch-board art is a way to create an image using a special board with a black surface layer and white or rainbow colourful under layer. Using a sharp tool, you cut into the black to reveal the white (or coloured) layer below. The resulting image is a series of light lines against a dark background. Scratchboard art is considered a type of direct engraving, a process where an image is incised or cut into a surface. The image is created completely by making repeated small lines, marks and strokes. Hope you’ll enjoy this activity! 5 of 28

Activity 2:

Love your own Micro-Greens

What are Micro-greens? Micro-greens are very young plants that are packed full of nutrition and super easy to grow. They are harvested when just 1 1/2 – 2 weeks old, so they don’t need a lot of extended care and are fairly forgiving. As long as they are kept moist, and have a little light, they will be happy and you will have fresh greens on your plate in no time.

Step 4: Place the Tissues Take few thin ply of Face Tissues and place them over the black tray. Use 1-2 folded tissue as shown in the video. Step 5: Spray some Water Spray the tissue with water 1-2 times using the Spray Bottle. If you don’t have a spray bottle, sprinkle water using your fingers. Step 6: Sprinkle some Seeds Sprinkle the Micro-Seeds provided over the wet tissue and keep the tray away from direct sun. Step 7: Spray water regularly Spray the seeds 2-3 times as day with water. You can also cover the seeds with an aluminium foil to retain moisture. Remember to remove the foil each time you spray. Step 8: Top-up the Tray In a few days, you will see roots growing. Once the roots reach the water, spraying is no longer required. If required, top up the water in the clear plastic container. Step 9: Add liquid fertilizer (optional) Optionally, you can add half strength liquid fertilizer into the water for faster growth. Step 10: Harvest your Seedlings Harvest the seedlings in 7-14 days by cutting just above the seeds as shown in the video. Use your micro-greens straight after harvest for maximum flavour. Remember to wash your tray and container thoroughly before re-use.

Introduction • Knowledge Nugget •

How is Mosaic Art made? Mosaic art dates back thousands of years, with classical works made of stones, glass, or ceramic tiles. Many modern digital artists work with individual pixels on a computer, but others still use physical objects to create mosaic art, piece by piece. What they use to make those mosaics is quite varied, limited only by the imagination and the availability of chosen medium.

Instructions •

O

nce you have gathered all the material, follow these steps. Make sure your mum or dad is watching over while you do this so that you can reach out to them when you need help. Be careful with the glass pieces!

Step 1: Prepare the Base Wipe the Heart-shape MDF base with a Cleaning Cloth to get rid of any dust or dirt.

Step 2: Trace the Tea-light Keep the Tea-light at the centre of the MDF base and use a pencil to stencil around the tea-light.

Step 3: Tile Outside Border (Heart Shaped) Spread some glue around the boundary of the MDF base and stick square shape small blue ceramic tiles (Vitreous Glass Tiles). Spread the glue in small parts to avoid drying of the glue. Use the tweezers to place the tiles to avoid the glue sticking on the fingers. Leave 1-2mm gap between each tile.

Step 4: Tile Inside Border (Circle Shaped) Spread some glue around the stencil of the tea-light and stick square shape small blue Vitreous Glass Times in the same way. Again, leave 1-2mm gap between each tile. Leave the pieces to dry for 15-20 mins.

Step 5: Fill in the Gaps After the tiles have dried, it’s time to fill in the rest of the space. In this step we need to start from the edges and work your way inwards. Try putting pieces without tweezers just to get an idea of how it fits. The pieces needs to fit in like a puzzle leaving minimum gap possible. Once you are confident of placing the glass pieces in a particular manner, spread some glue and start sticking the glass pieces with the tweezers.

Step 6: Your Hearty Mosaic Art is Ready Place the tea-light candle in the centre and your Masterpiece is ready! Show off to your friends and family OR gift it to on special occasions.

Activity 4:

Hot-n-cold Colour Switching Slime

What is a Slime? Slime is made of long molecules of different polymers, including glue and starch, which becomes cross-linked, or intertwined, when you mix them together with water. These cross-linked polymers stick together but can be stretched out and moulded into any shape without easily breaking.

How does it change colour? The slime contains thermo-chromic pigment - a pigment that changes its colour depending on its temperature. This particular type of thermo-chromic pigment is known as a leucodye, and it can only change its colour between being transparent and having one colour, or between just two colours. The molecules of a leucodye change their shape slightly when heated or cooled, and this shifts the leucodye between its two colour 20 of 28states.

O

nce you have gathered all the material shown on the left page, follow these steps. Make sure your mum or dad is watching over while you do this, so that you can reach out to them when you need help. Step 1: Get Ready

Gather all the material required and use a flat surface like a table or a bench to do the activity. Keep a paper towel handy in case of any spillage. You will need measuring cups for almost all steps, so keep it handy all the time.

Step 2: Pour some glue Pour 60 ml (1/4 cup) of School Glue in a mixing bowl. Use a measuring cup from your mum’s kitchen for this step.

Step 3: Add warm water Add 60 ml (1/4 cup) of warm water to the mixing bowl. Measuring cup again!

Step 4: Stir the solution Stir this solution until it is mixed to an even consistency and keep this solution to a side to be used in a later steps. This is solution Number 1.

Activity 4:

Hot-n-cold Colour Switch Slime

Instructions (2/2) •

Step 5: Pour some warm water

Step 9: Add some colour

Take another mixing bowl and fill it with 120 ml (1/2 cup) of warm water. Use appropriate measuring cup!

Add 2 to 3 drops of food colouring to the slime and mix it together by folding the slime 10-20 times. Add more colour if required. The slime should have the colour of the food colouring now.

Step 6: Add Borax powder To this mixing bowl add 2.5gm (half tea spoon) of borax powder and stir until the borax powder is completely dissolved. This is solution number 2.

Step 7: Add Borax powder Slowly add small amounts (10 drops at a time) of the Borax mixture (solution number 2) to the Glue mixture (solution number 1) until it thickens into slime. Make sure to continue stirring the Glue mixture as you are adding the Borax mixture. Add first ten drops and then stir these drop into the mixture completely before adding ten more drops. Stop once the mixture has turned into a loose slime consistency. Note: If too much borax solution is added the slime will be very stiff and not very slimy, so make sure to add solution 2 slowly and be careful not to add too much. If you end up adding too much borax solution your slime ends up being stiff and rigid.

Step 10: Add Thermo-chromic Add 5gm (half tea-spoon) of thermo chromic pigment to the slime and again fold it 10-20 times until it is mixed completely. Make sure your slime is completely covered in the pigment and takes the colour of the pigment.

Step 11: See the Hot Colour Place the slime in the microwave for roughly 10-20 seconds (depending on the power of the microwave). This will cause the slime to heat to above 33 degrees Celsius (92 degrees Fahrenheit) and slime colour will change turn to the food colour you have added in the step 8.

Step 12: See the Cold Colour Cooling it down will cause the slime to return to the colour of your thermo chromic pigment again. You can cool it down instantly by placing it over ice or a cold can of water or soft drink.

Step 8: Fold your Slime Take your loose slime and fold it 15-20 times to make sure all the ingredients are mixed well.

Fun Zone •
