DIY Spectacular Lava Lamp

How Lava Lamp Works? Lava lamps are made of two components - Liquid and Wax. The liquid part is a mixture of water, salt, colouring and other chemicals. The wax — the “lava” — is a mixture of wax and other chemicals. At the bottom of the lava lamp, there is a bulb for heating. When the Wax is at bottom, the bulb heats it up and makes it lighter than the Liquid — causing it to rise. When at top, the Wax cools down and becomes heavier — causing it to sink at the bottom. This Heating and Cooling cycles makes the Lava goes up and down in a continuous cycle. That’s it!

DIY Ceramic Hand Dish

40,000 Yrs old Hand-Painting! One of the hand-painting found in Indonesia, is the oldest hand stencil known to science, according to a new study published in the journal Nature. It is comparable in age to the world’s oldest-known rock art image, a red dot from Spain’s El Castillo site. The artists made hand images by blowing or spraying paint around hands, pressed against rock surfaces. This artist has preserved the shape of his hand for so many years. How about making your own Ceramic Hand Dish to keep your little treasures? Or gift it to mum, dad, grandparents, uncle, aunts or even friends!

These cave artists used pigment called Red Ochre and its mulberry colour is remarkably still vibrant!

nce you have gathered all material, follow these steps. Make sure your mum or dad is watching over while you do this so that you can reach out to them when you needed.

Step 1: Get Ready Gather all the material required and use a flat surface like a table or a bench to do the activity. Keep some tissues or kitchen towel ready for use in case of spillage.

Step 2: Rolling the Dough ① ② Soften and roll out some Air Hardening Clay ❺ to about 5mm (1/4”) thick sheet on a baking paper. You can use a Rolling Pin or a round cylindrical object to roll the clay.

23 of 28

Activity 4:

DIY Ceramic Hand Dish Step 3: Shape of Your Hand Trace your hand on a sheet of Paper using a Pencil or a Pen. Keep your fingers joined while tracing the hand. Then, use the Scissors to cut out the shape. You can also trace directly on the Clay sheet you have rolled up as shown in ③ ④.

Instructions (2/3) •

Use the Dobbing tool or back of the Brush to make stamp designs on the hand dish. You can also be creative here to carve out any design using the Clay tools. We have marked the nails and finger lines. Feel free to design it your way and may be add your initials on a side.

Step 6: Drying the Hand Dish ⑫

Step 4: Shaping the Dough ⑤ ⑥ ⑦ ⑧ Place the cut out of the hand on the rolled clay and trace it using a Pencil. Then, remove the paper cut out from the clay. Use a Sharp Paper Knife to remove the excess clay around the shape of the traced hand. Smooth the edges using the Clay Tools provided ❷. NOTE: Make sure your mum or dad is watching you while doing this step. If you are not comfortable, let them do this step. Step 5: Decorating Hand Dish ⑨ ⑪ ⑫

Put your hand dish into a Curved Bowl or a Curved Plate to give it a nice hand shape. Let it dry for 2-3 days. You can make out that the hand-dish is fully dry by the colour i.e. it should be completely white without any grey spots. Make sure you do not rush this step as wet clay can break easily.

24 of 28

Instructions (3/3) • Step 7: Painting your Dish ⑬ ⑭ ⑮ Mix one part Acrylic paint ❶ to one part of the Varnish ❹ and paint the dish using the Brush provided ❸. Try not to use excess paint as it may lead to flooding of the tiny holes and design. Allow it to dry. If you wish to make a multi colour dish, please use only acrylic paints.

Step 8: And it’s Ready! ⑯ Use little varnish to coat the hand dish so as to give it a shiny finish. And it’s ready! Your very own Mid Century Ceramic Hand Dish.
