Interior decoration is an art that Maha Lamki has mastered. The accomplished interior designer is renowned for her contemporary, chic style that she incorporates in the projects she undertakes. Anne Kurian meets the awe-inspiring designer

Combining passion and creativity H

er office is a sea of tranquility awash in soothing white and grey punctuated by large, captivating photographs that relate to her work. Her home is modern and stylish yet holds a lot of warmth. This is one designer who lives by what she believes in. Maha Lamki is among the most renowned interior designers in the city. The CEO of Décor Bait Al Dhahir, Lamki has been fascinated by the world of design and décor from an early age. “Ever since my childhood, I have liked to decorate. Creating something from a plain canvas, fabric or space has been my passion – be it a room, art or textiles. I took up art and then quickly moved to fashion and later textile printing. I have always been interested in designing,” says Lamki. Her passion and creativity came to light when friends and family visited her home which was decorated by Maha. She got many requests from enthralled visitors to her home who liked the way she had done up the interiors of her home. Maha responded to the requests and had her tryst with interior decoration for two years. Maha and her family moved to the UK for a while where she enrolled at the American Intercontinental University London for a course in Interior Design. When she came back to Oman, she was again approached by friends and people known to her to do up their homes. “It was just passion that made me embrace interior designing and I truly enjoyed doing up homes,” says Lamki. She then decided to take her passion ahead and enter the world of interior designing as a business option when she started receiving enquiries for bigger projects. “There were already big players in the market doing great work. But I wanted to bring my taste and design style

into projects. While these companies have great design methods, I wanted to introduce my designing styles that are quite different and unique to what we have seen in Oman. I wanted to be able to do this without having to be worried about having run-ins with the bigger players. “I decided that I would keep my design styles and techniques but would sub-contract the bigger companies to do my work. In short, once I get a large project I will use my style of design and entrust the heavy work to the bigger companies. This has helped me to work with the larger companies and also get work done easier,” explains Lamki. The talented interior designer’s largest project till date is the new Ministry of Higher Education building in Qurum. Speaking about her mode of working, Lamki says, “It is important to visualise how an empty office or home is going to look like after designing – right from the colour on the walls to fittings and furniture, and overall design. When I work with the bigger companies, I design the interiors and then the sub-contracted firm takes over the execution.”

There are many residential projects coming up in Oman and we need designers who can do up homes

Often, products, brands and certain raw materials that Lamki requires for her interior decoration projects are not easily available in Oman, which requires her to travel or turn to Dubai for her needs. “Fabrics and select raw materials are easy to come by. But what lack is variety in furniture. We do have a lot of furniture stores in the city but not enough variety. So I often travel to Dubai to choose furniture for the projects I work on,” she says.

Lamki is particular about not taking on every project that comes her way. “I will not take on a project that I will not be comfortable doing. The people or companies that approach me know my style and I do not like to make compromises in my work. I sometimes pull out of projects if I feel the client’s requirements that do not work with the look being created,” says the designer. She explains, “I cannot work on a project unless I am passionate about it.” Quality is another area where Lamki will not compromise on although she offers her clients various budgets. Yet, if the choice of her client clashes with her design sensitivies, then Lamki is quick to point this out to the client. In almost all instances, Lamki’s judgement is not questioned. Ornate decorative pieces, velvet curtains, large chandeliers and gold leafing are common elements of design synonymous with homes and even many commercial establishments in the Middle East. Instances of this can be found all over Oman too. “But this is changing,” says Lamki. “The young generation who are well travelled and have seen homes or designs abroad are adopting cleaner and contemporary styles. I have visited the homes of young couples here and they all have incorporated unique styles in their homes that look lovely.” Lamki feels that there is a need for more interior designers in Oman. “There are many residential projects coming up in Oman and we need designers who can do up homes. There are a lot of people who do not know how the interiors of their homes should be designed. Many people may not have the budget to afford personalised home décor advise as interior designers are limited here. But if there are more designers, then this problem can be tackled.” One of her suggestions is for companies that have large residential projects underway to avail the services of an interior designer for clients who buy the property. Lamki’s reputation in the market has reached such heights that today clients hand over their houses to her and request her to make it “livable.” Clients trust her judgement and often leave her to decide just about every aspect of the interiors of their homes. Lamki is often complimented by her clients after a project is completed for transforming a house into a home. “I believe in the saying: If you love your job, you are going to do great in it,” says Lamki. Undoubtedly, Maha Lamki is a fine example of that adage!

The 2011 collection from IDdesign consists of a wide range of simple Scandinavian home decor products and accessories, with something for everyone; each piece of furniture is carefully constructed by their in house designers who keep up to date on the latest fashions and trends making their innovations a great success. However quality and comfort is a key feature and are not neglected in the pursuit of creating something trendy, an overall perfection is achieved. Kim Jepsen, General Manager of IDdesign Oman gives us a deeper insight about the store and its latest collection. How is the latest collection different from the earlier collection? “Furniture has become fashionable; 10 years ago the furniture retailers would decide what kind of fabrics, colours etc they wanted to sell and that was what they offered the customers, today collections are all about connecting with the colours from the fashion industry and all the global trends going on at the moment, because the customers of today are very selective, and very aware of current trends.


“The 2011 collection is very glamorous, colourful, vibrant and with some outstanding designs – I think that a lot of the new shapes and designs gives endless opportunities to mix and match, and makes it easy to create your own dream home.”

What kind of response you have received so far? “Very positive; I think the vibrant colours, the touches of luxury appeal to not only to the locals but just about everyone. Actually we have had to reorder several things even before the catalogue has been launched – that is always the best indicator on how well a collection has been received.”

What is the kind of trend this collection boasts of? “Colours and patterns are big right now along with new versions of old favourites, but also quality. The trend is that customers don’t only want a cool, trendy sofa – they want quality and comfort as well.”

Can you describe what the collection is all about? “Our style groups are there to inspire our customers – quite often they are a little more “edgy” than many people would normally choose – with the style groups we show that it is alright to combine different patterns textures etc. Trend spotting is a long process, so in the progress of creating a new collection, trade fairs and fashion shows are visited, as well as working with designers on new materials and shapes – they always have to be a year or two ahead of the industry to ensure that we have the collections the customers are expecting from us – when they expect it from us. We have four style groups, Deluxe, Global, Upnordic and Urban and they are all very unique and there is something for everybody whether you are a city person, globetrotter, into luxury or just want to live inspired by nature Deluxe – The name says it all; it’s about indulging yourself into a luxurious world of contradictions where decadent satin meets raw rivets. Futuristic design combined with voluminous and richly ornamented interpretations of historic interiors. This version of glamour has a clear dramatic and overstated twist that will turn your home into exciting scenery for the adventures of your life. Global – Is about inviting the world into your home. The Global interior is inspired by the most colourful and exotic cultures and creates a warm, original and exciting atmosphere ready to explore. t is not often that we get to see unique wood art on furniture from Oman these days. I guess that is one reason that makes Abu Yasseen’s Designs unique and a cut above the rest. Abu Yasseen has been creating priceless hand crafted work for the past 18 years and their work is a reflection of talent, passion and love for creating unique furniture. Although I did not get the opportunity to meet the artists who are involved in carving out mesmerising designs on wood furniture; I saw the passion, commitment and the love for taking on the work in Sabrina Santiago Al Noumani, DGM, Abu Yasseen Designs, Trading & Marketing who is a graduate in Fine Arts and Visual Technology, CAD 2D & 3D certified and Adobe certified expert. It was the passion and love of Abu Yasseen’s founder for wood carving as well as inlays and his vision to bring the traditional beauty of Islamic style wood work and its secret techniques to life that this company was established.

Porsche Design is among the leading luxury brands in the segment of upmarket men’s accessories. Are you an interior designer by profession or is it passion? I am not an interior designer but I do have a passion for high quality, contemporary design. When I worked in construction, I often managed the interior design of the homes I built. As a result I developed a good grounding in interior design, and have an eye for what works and what doesn’t. Schmalenbach has taken the business from a small, two-man team into an internationally respected business by taking the concept of design oriented box furniture and adapting it to each individual customer’s needs. With ad notam, no other brand on the market compares to this superior product. How did you decide on these specific high-end brands from the vast sea of choices available these days? Eggersmann has been successfully designing and manufacturing kitchens worldwide for more than 100 years. The brand still adopts a personal approach; the word “no” is simply not in their vocabulary! I believe they are one of the most innovative, luxurious and customer focused kitchen brands in the world, in terms of unique materials and superior design. With Lambert, I became a customer in the early 1990s and their individual, independent and technically perfect bespoke pieces became a way of life for me. Their timeless, unique collections make Lambert one of my all time favourite furniture brands. I was looking for a small individual safe manufacturer when I discovered Doettling, just around the corner from the home of my parents! When I visited the Jensen factory in Norway, I had a feeling of such tradition and pride. The customer approach of this 60-year old brand is so transparent. For years I have worked with Junckers on a number of European projects so it was natural for me to select the brand as our partner.

Getting a franchise is difficult but getting a brand nearly half the world away is tougher. How did you manage to get them all under one roof? Most of the B5 brands – Eggersmann, Doettling, Lambert, F+M Fos – are family owned and run. They all have a philosophy very similar to that of B5. Design is all about a personal style, a lifestyle, a feeling of comfort yet functionality in our own environment. Each brand under the B5 umbrella is bespoke in its design ethic. We have brought the art of customization to contemporary interiors, offering luxury design and quality craftsmanship in every brand we partner with. On approaching each brand there was an automatic synergy between our concept and their own individual business objectives. This led to a natural partnership. What made you launch B5? Could you take us through the setting up and the journey so far? I always felt that there was little opportunity for us to express our individuality in our own personal space, and this region is no different to the rest of the world in this regard. I wanted to create a design centre where both designers and end users could come, consult and leave with a piece of furniture that is as unique as it is creative. When I moved to Dubai and was furnishing my own home, I felt very uninspired by what was available. I soon developed a business model, which would bring exclusive contemporary European brands to the region, offering bespoke furniture and accessories, from a sophisticated and creative space. B5 took a few years to become a reality – I am a true perfectionist and this shows in my work – I wouldn’t have dreamed of opening until every thing was 100% perfect! B5 refers to the five principles; how do you manage to achieve this in every project you undertake? They are not only the five design principles, they are B5’s own principles. We follow this philosophy in everything

we do, from our initial client consultations to delivery, fit-out and after sales. We have also recruited a team of highly trained European technicians, so the fitting of our Eggersmann kitchens and Schmalenbach cabinets, for example, are of the highest standards. Is your clientele based only in Dubai? Although our showroom is in Dubai, we are not limited to this market. We also have clients from other parts of the Gulf as well as Abu Dhabi. Please tell us about your future plans. I am currently searching for other interiors brands that appreciate our philosophy of customisation and compliment our current core brands. I will soon be traveling to Europe to meet with some small, unique and interesting companies who I am keen to work with. In the long term, I am keen to develop a B5 collection of my favourite pieces from all over the world. I am currently sourcing high quality manufacturers to discuss my design concepts. t is increasingly becoming du jour nowadays to invest in and collect selected art pieces which will subsequently adorn one’s home. However, the collection and adornment of art is as much about forging a personal relationship with the art as it is revelatory about one’s identity and interests. Furthermore, the relationship between the art that one collects and the home décor is a further interesting one in which the two complement and enrich with one another. Crème de la Crème spoke to well-known Muscat artist and art consultant, Sarah White about her thoughts on the role art plays in a home’s décor.

What role do you perceive art playing in a home’s decor? Art will quite simply brand your home for the art that we choose to put in our homes reveals elements of our character, interests and individuality as well as how we wish to be perceived by visitors to our home. It is about personal thought, idea, and expression. Art can act as a souvenir of a happy holiday or memory of a person or place; it can be thought provoking, aesthetically pleasing, relaxing, and even challenging or confrontational. What novelty do you think a piece of art bring to a home’s existing decor space? When in the process of decorating homes, what difference will art make to the décor being envisioned? Art will bring interest and enjoyment into the home; for example, I can stare at a painting I like and lose myself in

the canvas for hours. Many friends who are art lovers have shared this view and take great pleasure in showing to a new guest their favorite pieces. I always look at art in peoples’ homes when I visit them; there is invariably an interesting story connected to it and as to why it is on the wall. Art can also complement the interior design , texture ,and colour that fits in with the furniture and concept created for each room. Most homes have art of some kind somewhere, reflecting the human instinct to decorate our dwellings since thousands of years. It is very exciting to buy art, and let’s face it, real art comes at a price and is a luxury to most, art can be seen as an investment but also just enjoyed for what it is. How does one go about choosing art for a home with existing decor? What if you are considering investing in an art work while simultaneously formalising


the overall decor vision of the home: what aspects should you keep in mind prior to choosing and purchasing a work? If you are looking for art for an existing furnished home, you need to think about wall space for your art and what kind of sizes you can accommodate before you start looking for it. You need to consider lighting and sunlight, keeping in mind that sunlight can fade artwork fast so you should never place artwork in direct sunlight. Then you could start to looking for things you feel would fit. I would like to personally point out though that I buy art because I like it, I never plan as to where I will be placing it. I have worked with various interior designers in my capacity as art consultant and the most important place to start when creating a vision for a space (or home) is by assembling what we call a ‘mood board: this will reflect the feeling that you want to conjure up in your space.

your creative side and the choice you make reflects your personal taste. Many people are now making their own art for their living spaces and having fun doing it. I have also worked with kids on big canvases that their families exhibit in their sitting rooms with great pride. To make spaces work, you have to consider the overall picture and how each individual part fits together to make this bigger picture: you have to therefore figure out how the furniture, accessories, and art will work in conjunction with one another. You may have to further re-think when you purchase a new piece of art and its impact upon the existing decor. What are the contemporary global trends? Are home decorators intent on including works in their homes that are reflective of their tastes and interests or do they still gravitate towards famous artists’ work? Global trends are very diverse; in general, people are becoming more interested in replicating a similar feel of decor that they may have seen in a luxury hotel or a magazine. People are experimenting with more colours, textures, fabrics and dramatic features such as lights; they are taking care about what with they choose to put in their homes and it’s always important to mix form with function. My advice is ‘less is more’ and de-clutter your homes to enjoy them, buy good quality furniture and artwork and be proud to share your home with others. You can assemble whatever you like and eventually begin understanding what kind of ‘mood’ you would like to set in each room; the mood board can consist of a collage of textures, patterns, colors, and fabrics. The best place to start would be by cutting out things from magazines you like and use that as a base. Once you have established the ‘mood’ then you can start to plan wall colours, furniture, flooring, accessories and art to recreate that desired ‘mood’. If you are buying art as an investment, you need to know about the artist and their professional background- their credibility, if you like. It is akin to if you were wishing to invest in a company, you would feel a lot more secure if you knew of the background and the company’s sustainability before giving them your money. Some artists or galleries have websites or brochures so you can do some research. I don’t like thinking of art as a financial investment, though: I prefer to look at it as an investment in your creative soul. How should art be placed in a space? How should one make it integrate into the home whilst still retaining its individual identity? If you invest in a piece of art, it has made a connection with you and you will find a space to hang it. Art reflects

What role is art playing in Omani homes nowadays? Most Omani homes have areas for entertaining guests and they vary greatly depending on the taste of the homeowner: some are very formal and classic while others are very casual and contemporary. Calligraphic art is very popular as are traditional landscapes in gilded frames. The younger generations are more fashion conscious, often possessing amazing contemporary art pieces. I would always encourage people to buy real art from real artists rather than what I describe as supermarket art from lifestyle shops. Could you please share your list of dos and don’ts regarding placing art in one’s home? Art should always be hung at the centre of your eye level, which is usually about 160 cm from the floor. One major mistake that people make while hanging art work is to hang it too high; after all, you should be easily able to see and enjoy the work without having to strain your neck. Hang the art straight. Finally, do not allow the frame to overwhelm the art-work; give the art work space to be so that you can appreciate it without any distractions.

ighting Solutions LLC has been doing pioneering work in the field of lighting in the Sultanate of Oman since 2005. The Toyota and Lexus showrooms, Jawharat A’Shatti’s new wing, high end boutiques and upmarket villas are just some of the projects handled by Lighting Solutions. One of the leading wings of the Jinesh Dharamsey Holding Group of Companies, Lighting Solutions was set up by entrepreneur Jinesh Dharamsey, Sarma (who looks after the business in Dubai) and Ramesh Raja, the General Manager of the company. Ramesh Raja, a lighting designer and application engineer, along with the team at Lighting Solutions has been doing outstanding work and has brought many innovations to the field of lighting in the country. From large commercial establishments to palatial villas and more, many major assignments have been attended to by Raja and his team. A qualified lighting specialist, product designer as well as electrical and electronics engineer, Raja takes some time from his busy schedule to talk about the company, lighting innovations and the styles in vogue. Lighting Solutions LLC – the journey “We set up the company in 2005. Lighting in Oman was at its infancy at that time. There were large companies in the market at that time but they offered only lighting as a product. Our services were different – we offered concepts. This was appreciated by the clients we met and they offered us various opportunities to do more than just sell lights.

“Our first challenge was the Toyota showroom in Wattayah. The project was given to us within two months of the opening of Lighting Solutions. We took it on and worked really hard to realise the project. The project distinctly marked us as lighting speclialists in the market. Soon word spread about our work in the showroom and many opportunities started pouring in.” It’s not about selling products “With many Far East products coming in to the market, mushrooming of trading houses and the downfall of Dubai market, there are many dealers or stockists who are dumping cheap lighting products in Oman. Our priority is not to sell lighting products, our challenge is to make a client understand the difference between a cheap and premium product. Clients are sometimes confused after having seen the cheaper variety of lighting products available. For instance the client sees a chandelier for a few rials and then when he approaches us, we need to explain why the lighting products we have are a few hundred rials. We educate the client and that is what is important for us. This is a process

we always get into when we take on a project. And I think that is what makes us different from others in the market. “Turnover is secondary. We want our clients to trust us first. When there is trust, there will be a sale automatically. Our customers have gone on to become our friends and also recommend us to others. We are also particular about the projects we choose; if we feel a project is just a commercial endeavour we are sometimes hesitant about taking it up.” The importance of right lighting “Lighting is the fourth dimension in architecture. Without lighting, a building is incomplete. To achieve the right effect in lighting, there has to be marriage of mood and utility. When lighting up a home, every feature has to be attended to. A building has to look appealing even against darkness and this is the function of lighting. “Today, most people spend very few hours in the house and that limited time has to be comfortable. Lighting plays an important role in such a scenario. When taking on a residential project, we meet the client a few times to understand what his needs. We go over his home plans and his ideas; we then put forth our suggestions. Sometimes it may not be what the client wants, but what would be ideal to the architecture. Most of our clients appreciate the suggestions we put forth and are delighted by the results. We believe that lighting is an art.” Tradtional lighting Vs. Contemporary lighting “The general trend in lighting even now is to use heavy chandeliers, pendants and wall lights. But this often turns out to be accumulation of unnecessary lighting products. Provisions are made for wall lights or pendants but then when it comes to maintenance, not much is done and even the poor quality of products show up after a year. At the end of the day many elements remain in places which are effectively not used. “But we feel this may not always be necessary and explain to them; most often customers are happy to have lesser fixtures in space as long as the lighting is right. “Almost 75 per cent of the customers prefer the traditional style of lighting but the other 25 percent are open

to very innovative ideas. We have had some customers who have been flexible enough to make modifications in their building plans to accommodate the lighting ideas suggested by us.” Lighting is my passion “I have been in the field of lighting for over 21 years now. I worked for less than a decade in India and then moved to Dubai where I worked with the Zubair Group. Dubai was just starting to develop in those days and there were many projects that were coming up. It was a great experience for us to learn more about the lighting industry at an international level. “I am passionate about lighting; I am also a qualified lighting specialist. Developing and improving lighting products is one of my areas of interest. I also took courses in lighting and have passed the National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions (NCQLP) examination.”

Colours reflect the personality of a home owner. Colours bring depth and substance to a home. Choosing the colours for the interiors of homes is not an easy task, but one that requires research and creativity

A

home can most often tell you how the people living in it are. Their personalities often are imprinted in the décor of their homes. The colours of the walls play an important role too. In fact colours and moods are interrelated. For many people, a particular shade can trigger good or bad feelings based on a personal experience in our past. The colours you choose for the interior of your home matters a lot in setting the tone of your living space. Some experts suggest vivid colours like yellow and orange increase our productivity, while other colours influence our perception of the passage of time. Studies show that people perceive time to move more slowly in a red room and faster in a blue or green room. Colour is also believed to affect our physiology. For example, bright reds and yellows are said to increase blood pressure, while blue does the opposite. Orange is said to be an appetite stimulant, while violet has the opposite effect. Many people are naturally attracted to warmer colours such as red, as opposed to cooler colours like blue. And lighter, brighter colours are known to make

a room look and feel bigger; darker, cooler colours the opposite. Moving to colours and personalities, people who like brown are considered to be dependable and stable, while those who favour blue are confident. Lovers of yellow are optimistic and creative, while pink people are - surprise, surprise - more romantically inclined. If you’re a green person you’re responsible and generous with your time. Keeping in mind your own colour tastes, here is some simple, practical advice on choosing colours that will best work on the outside of your home: Start from the top down. In terms of a single point of colour reference, your roof is usually the largest and most obvious feature. So bear in mind the colour you choose ‘up top’ will influence the choices you make ‘down below’. Look around you. Unless you’re trying to make a very strong statement about your individuality, you’ll want to choose colours that blend and harmonise with both your built and natural environments. Keep in mind how colour can seemingly ‘change’


“ according to the time of day or season. Some colours may look warm and relaxing on a sunny day, but might appear more subdued on a cloudy day. Warmer colours create the perception of nearness, while cooler colours make things appear to be further away. Consider this when choosing colours to highlight particular building features. Selecting the paint

There are mainly two paint varieties for interior work - latex and alkyd. Latex paints are water-based and easy to work with. They are low odour, quick drying, easy to cleanup and relatively inexpensive. However, latex finishes are less durable than alkyd paint. Alkyd paints are synthetic-based and adhere to surfaces better than latex paint. Some alkyd paints have vegetable or linseed oil in them but they are still referred to as oil base paints. They provide a rich durable finish, emit an odor and are slow to dry. If you use alkyd paints you will require chemical solvents to thin the paint and to clean up tools and brushes. Paint manufacturers are now creating ‘green paints’ that do not have volatile organic compounds that can be harmful to the environment. Subtle colour tones and soft interior paint colours, like citrus yellow, light green, blue or pink-lilac, will be popular for large surfaces of rooms walls in 2011. Choosing bright and sharp colours, like reddish pink and brown-purple for interior decorating accents, saturated and vivid paint colour schemes for small details and wallpaper patterns will be modern decorating colours trends in 2011. Selecting paint finishes

Paint gloss is a crucial element of interior paint work. There are five types of paint glosses: Flat - a low glare finish for surfaces that do not require frequent washing. It’s also the best at hiding flaws in walls. Eggshell - a low sheen finish for walls. This finish can be used in areas that require cleaning such as kitchen and bathroom walls. Satin - a pearl-like finish for walls and woodwork. It stands up well to moisture and is good to use in bathrooms. Semi-gloss - a low sheen finish that has a satin, low glare shine and moderate durability. This finish is good on wood trim, doors and cabinets. High gloss - the most wear-resistant finish, containing the most resin. The durability of glossy paints makes them ideal for use in areas subject to frequent use.


to add freshness and style with a modern colour to rooms. Many people will prefer modern paint decorating to bring novelty into their home decor in 2011. When choosing colours, start with main areas of the house - specifically, the living room, dining room and entry way. Choose a colour scheme for those areas first, then pull one colour from the scheme. For example, take the blue sofa and tone it down to midnight blue for an accent in more private spaces such as the den or bedroom. Another simple trick to getting the colours right is to use darker colour values for the floor, medium colour values for the walls and light shades for the ceiling. In general, analogous colour schemes - colours next to each other on the colour wheel, such as blue and green are more casual and relaxing, and work best in informal or private spaces. This is a good strategy for a bedroom, where you want to rest and recover. Whatever colour scheme you choose, put something black in every room. The black clarifies all the rest of the colours in the room. Try a black lampshade, a black vase or a black picture frame. When decorating a space, divide the colours in the space into components of 60 percent of a dominant colour, 30 percent of a secondary colour and 10 percent of an accent colour. not much written about but bourgeoning sphere of investment is sports. Away from the often illegal or morally dubious business of gambling/betting on games, investing in sports-related ventures is a business opportunity whose time has come. In fact Qatar recently hosted its second sports investment conference earlier this year. Sports investment allows you to build a solid portfolio over time much like a stock market or mutual fund, and propagates strong financial gain over time provided you are a player in form. There are plenty of reasons to play ball from media attention to recession proof returns. Game Sports provide not just entertainment and distraction from busy workaday schedules but also present business opportunities to suit all kinds of investor profiles. It also gives a certain amount of emotional satisfaction to be closely involved in a sport that appeals to ones natural interests. The potential of sports is evident if one follows the example of America’s A league B schools. Professor Grousbeck, director of the Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies at Stanford Graduate School of Business juggles his academic duties with a role as managing partner of the Boston Celtics, a National Basketball Association (NBA) team. At the Kelley School of Business Prof. Winston’s, book, “Mathletics” is part of the curriculum and deals with issues such as ticket pricing, marketing the team, and even how many hot dog stands to let. Wharton launched the Wharton Sports Business Initiative, a research-focused think-tank, directed by Professor Ken Shropshire. providing customised programmes to a variety of clients, including the National Football League (NFL). Institutional investors are also now taking an interest in minor-league teams. Manhattan venture capitalist Seaborn Capital, for example, specializes in arranging financing for ownership groups like Mandalay Baseball Properties. Another reason to get out on the field is that investment in sports is likely to be more efficient as it is usually based on better information. Media coverage ensures that sports teams and personnel are closely policed. Games are analyses ad-nauseum and stats available for analysis (often free of cost) are mind-blowing. Compared to conventional

companies that often go to great lengths to hide information, sports is very public giving you the opportunity to make more informed investment decisions. A compelling reason for considering sports for your investment is that even in shrinking economies, sports has shown itself to be resilient and gives you a more or less level playing field (pun intended). Consider the latest auction amounts paid for cricketers by the Indian Premier League (IPL) teams or the average price of television-advertising slots during the last Super Bowl. The Premier League of English football sold domestic live broadcasting rights for three seasons from August 2010 for nearly 5% more than the existing deal. So while no one can entirely escape the recession, sports seem to come close. The second most compelling reason is the old standard of investing – the goal of portfolio diversification. As a more or less completely un-correlated asset class, investing in sports is an excellent way to diversify from your conventional financial market investments. And now for scoring the ultimate GOAL – Sports have given consistently good returns to savvy investors. Allen Fears, one of the founders of the sports consulting firm National Sports Services, notes that properly-run minorleague and independent baseball teams reap profits of 5

NSS has participated in 18 minor-league baseball team sales, and according to Fears, not only has every team turned a profit on sale, the average team has sold for more than four times the purchase price after five years. Even derivatives like Sports based funds have shown returns of above 10% for year to date figures as evidenced by funds like Newton belonging to Centaur Private Managed Accounts Fund. Set So if you are itching to take to the field, what are the investment routes? Well, if money is no issue (we are talking at least a few 100 million dollars) then buying a team is the most direct way of equity investment in sports. On the other hand if you are in for the long haul, carefully chosen minor league teams or upcoming sports (like Cross Fit) or region specific sports (think Falconry in Mongolia)

could give you a hard hit for less than a million dollars. Amongst the established sports, Hockey has the lowest average investment prices as per Mark Ganis, president of SportsCorp, a Chicago sports business consultancy. If you don’t have the contacts or the money for buying yourself, you could turn to companies like Sports Investment Partners (http://www.sportsip.co.uk/) focused purely on the Sport Industry. They have a specific focus on companies in the mid –lower market range. While current focus in on Europe, they are also looking at opportunities in the Middle East and Asia Pacific. Mediasportsinvestments. com is another international fund focused on football. A more conventional way to invest in sports is to buy normal stocks in selected sports related companies like Nike (NYSE : NKE) or ESPN (owned by Disney NYSE:DIS). These companies have not only given investors consistently good returns but are projected to post very healthy growths and returns in the next 5 years. You could also invest in vehicles like Centaur Private Managed Accounts Fund products like NEWTON, EUCLID (http://www.centaurinvestments.com/) which could help you spread your investments over several sports. Centaur is a market-leading investment managers in sports intelligence and training and last year launched the Galileo Managed Sports Fund, the worlds first regulated sports exchange traded fund. At a more intensely personal level, sports memorabilia and related collectible also make for good investments and there are specialized companies trading in the same. A new but growing sports investment model is that adopted by StarStreet (http://www.starstreet.com/), a kind of stock market system for sports that uses real money for buying and selling virtual shares of the players and teams. Founder Jeremy Levine is quick to note that the model is about “investments”, not “bets” as certified by several lawyers. The first market was for the NFL. They are now offering NBA, MLB and other markets. Indirect business opportunities exist in investing in sporting venues, franchises (like gyms and merchandise) or sports relates gaming, institutes and software. Match A word of caution from the Coach before you enter the sports arena. This is pro league and the risks and returns both abound. Auto Racing is a striking example. Despite the popularity of NASCAR, International Speedway’s (NASDAQ:ISCA), shares have fallen almost 20% over the last decade. Shares of World Wrestling Entertainment (NYSE:WWE) have declined 24% over the same period. So while the various World Cups (Cricket & Football) have proven that people are crazy about sports and sports related searches dominate Google, turning your interest into a profitable investment requires technique as well as temperament both qualities that make a star athlete.

he name Dodge Durango summons up the image of a muscled 4-wheel drive with a protruding hood and heavy feel. The new 2011 Dodge Durango is in no way less muscled yet has softer lines and an accentuated body. In fact the new Durango looks even better with the redesign. The three-row SUV is quite a riveting automotive too. Although some die-hard Durango aficionados may find the new model slightly gentler in appearance than its predecessor, it is quite the beast on the road. And yes, the Durango, not so surprisingly, makes its presence felt even at a distance. The SUV is large and can amp up its roar on the roads. Equipped with a powerful engine, the Durango can give you the feeling of the automotive being able to handle just about anything thrown its way. Exterior If you are looking for a stylish vehicle that also purrs when switched on, then you are better off looking elsewhere. The Dodge is definitely macho even with its new soft accents on the body. The body of the Durango is rugged and has a complete ‘made to rough it out’ look. After all, depending on the model, a 290HP @ 6400 rpm or 360HP @ 5150 rpm is a definite ride that can rough it all! Dodge has not comprised in size; the redesigned Durango is still big. The length of the Durango is 5075,

its width 2172 and the height measures to 1800. The new Durango features a large sunroof, notching up its points in the aesthetic design department.

The audio-system is powerful and the model we took had Subwoofer; we sure did bring down the roof with the music!

Interior Though the interiors are quite simple, there is quite a bit that the 2011 Durango packs in. There are very few knobs to play around with on the dash of the 2011 Durango and features silver-coloured trim accents. Space is an impressive factor of the 2011 Dodge with plenty of shoulder, head- and legroom. Even when the third row in use, the cargo space measure to about 17.2 cubic feet. Both the second and third rows fold down, which translates to more space. Space also comes in the form of a tiered center console in the front row and cubbies in different areas inside the car. Another highlight of the automotive that went down well with us is its remote start system that got the car started and cooled by the time we got it. The vehicle also has an entertainment system for rearseat passengers and this could be handy when you are running errands with kids or while going on a long drive.

Drive The model we took for the test drive was the Durango Citadel 2011. It goes without saying that the 4-WD is heavy and thus can seem a tad slow in response when you step on the pedal. But that’s forgotten the moment you are cruising down the road; the Durango does get a lot of approving glances too. Powerful and in control, the 2011 Durango is just great on and off the road. It can haul quite a bit of weight around and is sure to perform just as well even with excess baggage. Like one of our friends commented, the 2011 Durango is not meant for the drag race track but is a winner for the everyday commute especially in this part of the world. Firm and settled in a way reliable automotives are, the 2011 Durango held its ground even when thrown around curbs and ungraded pathways. It rides low giving the driver the feeling of being in control even when off road. We were mightily impressed with its control on the

road even when flying down the highway at top speed. Even with its large size, the 2011 Durango is quite easy on maneuverability. Safety The vehicle’s brakes were the first of its features that we tested out and got thoroughly impressed with. The company says that the new Durango provides 45 safety and security features. This includes the standard electronic stability control (ESC), Hill-start Assist, Blind-spot Monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross Path (RCP) detection, which aid drivers when changing lanes or while parking. Front seatmounted air bags and curtain air bag for all three rows are standard. And should you use the Durango to haul heavy baggage, there’s even standard trailer-sway control. Dodge has always been up on their safety standards and the manufacturer does not disappoint with the new automotive. The Dodge Durango 2011 with its truck-like feel and extremely impressive road handling is a great vehicle family vehicle that is nothing less than reliable. For Porsche enthusiasts, it is a way of life - a unique and exciting relationship that develops between every Porsche driver and their car. Porsche Centre Oman, SATA LLC, demonstrated the power, precision and outstanding driving performance of the world’s leading sports car manufacturer by hosting an exclusive driving event – the Porsche World Roadshow. I experienced the same feeling as any Porsche driver would that day as I enjoyed every bit of driving each of the six mean machines on the rugged roads of Fanja. My photographer was a true sport to endure the adrenaline rush while I jammed the accelerator to almost 200kmph. The team of the Porsche World Roadshow brought the most admired sports cars including the popular Panamera as well as the new Cayenne, the latest addition to the model range. Altogether, 14 cars were shipped to Muscat for this highly popular driving event. Following the twisted and breathtaking mountainous roads to Fanja, all Porsche

vehicles demonstrated exceptional dynamics, high safety features, power and uncompromising comfort. Prior to the start of the drive, we received quick instructions about driving a Porsche car. Highly qualified Porsche instructors were flown down to provide expert tuition throughout the day to enhance driving skills. Participants were presented with a rare opportunity to testdrive the entire model range over a period of seven days. My favourite was the 2010 Porsche Panamera, the automaker’s first four-door sedan, debuted in the summer of 2009. The initial offering was three different models fitted with two incredibly capable eight-cylinder engines. The Panamera Turbo featured a mighty 500 horsepower variant of the identical engine that could launch the four-passenger sedan to 60 mph in well under four seconds.

rt has been her passion since childhood but it was only in 2000 that Radhika Hamlai started painting consistently. She did not take long to create a name for herself in the Omani art scene. Often exhibiting with other renowned names from Oman’s art fraternity, Hamlai’s works have been noted for its defining styles and themes. A solo exhibition has been due and Hamlai did just that recently. Hamlai’s debut solo exhibition, Human Connections, was unveiled Shangri La’s Barr Al Jissa Resort and Spa’s Art Gallery. The exhibition featured works and styles of the artist since she started pursuing art seriously. “This exhibition has been on my mind for some time but I was not sure if would be able to exhibit solo so soon,” says Hamlai. “But I had a lot of encouragement from my

family and friends; and I thought if I did not do it now, then when?” One of Hamlai’s earliest supporters was her sister-in-law, Niti Hamlai who encouraged her to become a member of the Omani Society for Fine Arts. The art scene in Oman has developed considerably in the past few years. Appreciation and knowledge of art among has seen an impressive surge in the city with more people buying art. This is an encouraging trend for artists like Hamlai and her peers. “When I started painting art was still at its infancy in Oman. But in the last six years or so, there has been a considerable growth in art.” A pioneering artist, Hamlai has been instrumental in facilitating workshops for artists in India and Oman to work as well as exhibit together. She herself has exhibited in various parts of the region and India.

At the exhibition, Hamlai’s works included a combination of oils, charcoal, acrylics and pen. Human Connections is a kaleidoscope of emotions and thoughts. Hamlai portrays life and various aspects that surround it through her paintings that are visually arresting. Hamlai’s strokes are bold and vibrant. Hamlai’s works have an identity of their own – often being inspired by the phase she is passing through which translates into captivating and moving art. One of the phases that she travelled through and ws portrayed in her works was spirituality. Bright and vigorous abstract forms come to life on the canvas heavily inspired by the artist’s spiritual travels to India. Her inspiration comes from her surroundings and how she feels when standing in front of the canvas. “I do not plan or think too much about how a painting should look before I start. My paintings are a reflection of the state of my mind at that moment,” she explains. Jorge Aguilor-Agon visited Oman for the very first time last month where he showcased his paintings at Bait Al Baranda in an exhibition which was part of his seventh world tour. Sudipta Dasgupta had the opportunity to meet the veteran artist

A genuine man who does not seek the spotlight for himself, often helping and encouraging others, the simple fact is his artwork has earned critical acclaim across all international cultures, from the USA, through to Europe and Australasia.” - Martin Spencer Coleman, Artist and Author - England Mesmerising, intricate and vivid are the words that came to my mind when I saw Jorge Aguilor-Agon’s paintings at Bait Al Baranda. A legendary artist, Jorge Aguilor-Agon has been part of the art scene and commemorates 75th anniversary this year, 55 years of which have been spent as a professional painter. Born in Barcelona in 1936, after attaining a degree Aguilor-Agon left Spain for Europe and mixed with the bohemian circles of the Schwabinger Kunstkreis in Munich, Parisian Montmatre, and Saint-Germain-des-Pres. His first exhibition was launched at the Medici Society in London, and his reputation as an artist quickly grew into one of international recognition and repute. His distinctive style of painting reflects a personal record of his travels and to date he has had seven highly successful world tours and over 178 individual exhibition. He holds an extensive list of award winning fine art reproduction to his credit and has received some of the highest rankings academic awards and distinctions to be bestowed within artistic circles. Working from studios in France, Spain and England he speaks six languages fluently and is a regular contributor to radio and television art programmes. A founding member of the European Academy of Fine Arts his paintings are represented in exclusive private collections and museums all over the world and citations appear in several notable reference journals.

A true Spaniard at heart, Aguilor-Agon is a larger than life character; my meeting with him was quite a memorable one. He took us down the memory lane citing anecdotes from his life and career as an artist. A memorable Journey “It has been a long journey yet it seems short if you judge by the material I have painted. It has been a long career where I have dedicated myself in creating intensive work of art. I started this career very early in my life and it has definitely been a very exciting one as I have had several surprises on the way which I will never be able to forget.” A self taught artist “I don’t have any academic or professional background in terms of painting. I have learnt it all by myself through experimentation. I am a self taught artist and over the years through experiments I have been able to do what I want on a piece of canvas. I like to have my own space and create whatever I want and that has helped me to specialise in what I do.” “I am not influenced by any artists’ work in particular as it does not allow me to be who I am and show what I am capable of. There are artists whose work I really admire but I don’t allow myself to get influenced by their work.”

I took them to a gallery in Munich and the man there said to me that I had a good sense of perspective and colour. The next you know that my painting was selected to be published for a magazine and it went onto become a number two painting in the world. So at that time and at that age with limited experience and no education in art, it was an amazing feeling to have received such recognition. The following year another of my painting was published by the same publishers and it got voted as one of the most popular paintings. There were moments which jumped out of the screen for me which I did not expect at all. After that the rest is history.”

y trip to Hungary has to be one of the most memorable ones. It was a unique trip to say the least as I can easily list down my life’s first time experiences. I experienced a thrilling helicopter ride over the Danube River, visited an Opera House for the first time in my life and most of all it was my first visit to any European destination. Another addition to this list is my dining experience at one of the most sought after Japanese restaurants in the world - Nobu. I have to agree that this dining experience was by far one of the most exclusive ones I have ever experienced as far as service and taste goes. Nobu in Budapest is the latest addition to Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s worldwide dining empire, conveniently located in the luxurious Corvinus Kempinski Hotel where I was staying; it is visited by tourists very often as the hotel is located at the very heart of Budapest, close to St Stephan’s Basilica, Chain Bridge and the Financial District. Since Nobu Budapest is the newest addition to the chain of restaurants, it boasts of swanky interiors,


ambient lighting, 120-seats including a private room and the sushi bar –an indispensable feature of all the NOBU restaurants world-wide. The Nobu Lounge Bar with 40 seats accommodates guests with separate menu card and a wide Nobu signature cocktail selection. Nobuyuki Matsuhisa – known to the world simply as “Nobu” – is the acclaimed and highly influential chef proprietor of Nobu and Matsuhisa restaurants all over the globe. Star Power Robert De Niro, actor, director, producer and two-time Academy Adward winner, was instrumental in bringing the artistry of Nobu first to New York and now around the world. I had the opportunity to dine with Kovács Adrienn, Restaurant Manager, Nobu Budapest and relish a full course authentic Japanese meal as well as understand the success of such a huge brand name. “Since the restaurant’s opening in September 2010, it has been doing well, besides the regular menu which can be found in all the Nobus worldwide. On the other hand, chefs at Nobu Budapest are continuously experimenting on new dishes and use local Hungarian ingredients like Hungarian mangalica, foie gras and duck in their menu,” says Adrienn. “We have a signature “Exotic Omakase” (Tasting menu of 7 courses) which is based on seasonal and local availability and it means that guests can have new culinary delights every week. The “Osusume” is a seasonal offer which again changes during every season. The Nobu Lounge Bar offers guests a special lounge menu, besides our Nobu Signature Cocktails.” The Alaskan Black Cod den Miso which is the signature dish of Nobu worldwide (also the favourite of Robert de Niro) turned out to be my favourite too! The black cod used in this dish comes straight from Alaska marinated in sweet miso paste for 3 days and then grilled for 8 minutes in a salamander grill. For a fish lover like me, this was an

absolute hit for me. The next dish that blew my mind was the Rock Shrimp Tempura in Creamy Spicy Sauce and the Yellowtails Jalapeno which is from the sushi bar (raw very thinly sliced yellowtail in yuzu juice and garnished with jalapeno pepper and cilantro). Nobu Budapest is always abuzz with tourists and it is almost like a tourist pit stop for everyone visiting Hungary. Adrienn confirmed that, “the proportion of foreigners (incl. tourists and expats) is around 60% so more foreigners than Hungarians come to the restaurant. Most of them know Nobu from other countries so they are looking for it when they come to Budapest; moreover we have met some who chose Budapest as a holiday destination because there is a Nobu here!” “Budapest is a hot spot for lot of Hollywood stars and they never miss an opportunity to dine atleast once at Nobu. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt visited Nobu at least three times when Angelina was shooting her first film as a director here in Budapest in the autumn. Lady Gaga dined here before her show in November 2010. Also John Cusack and Jeremy Irons visited the restaurant several times when they were filming in Budapest and now we are hoping to have Keanu Reeves who is here in Budapest shooting his latest film, 47 Ronin.” Says Adrienn. It is important to note that Nobu is not a tradition but a “new style” Japanese restaurant where Japanese traditional flavours meet South American flavours (based on Nobuyuki Matsuhisa’a South American, especially Peruvian influence). The executive chef at Nobu Budapest is none other than Lloyd Roberts who was born in Jamaica. Having accomplished much in a few years in the culinary world, Chef Roberts has been a quick riser in the New York City fine dining arena. Currently, he is the Executive Chef of Nobu Budapest where he over sees a multi- million dollar operation, with a dining room of a 120 seats. Before taking the position as Executive Chef of Nobu Budapest, Chef Roberts opened Nobu Moscow, is first multi – million dollar restaurant operation outside of the USA, there he over saw a dining room of a 170 seats. Before he was Executive Chef of Nobu Moscow and Nobu Budapest, Chef Roberts ran the Gramercy Park Hotel for Ian Schrager, where he was in charge of a $30 million food and beverage operation, including banquet, dining for 200 rooms as well as the hotel’s private roof club. To conclude, I enjoyed world class cuisine, met world renowned chefs and most of all experienced true Japanese delicacy – fresh, authentic and delicious!.

Unravelling Greece I

have to admit that my trip to Greece seemed almost like a getaway to paradise! A country so steeped in mythology, Greece intoxicates you with its beauty and makes you dream of a trip back. I landed in Athens early in the afternoon with my talented photographer, Elvis and headed straight for the hotel, Divani Palace Acropolis where we were put up for a night. We followed an itinerary that was prepared and managed by, Arabian Trails (a newly established destination management company in Oman) who made sure our five day stay in Greece was spent in a truly memorable way. The company offers services to tour operators, MICE organisers and cruise ship companies globally and currently they have partnered with Variety Cruises in Greece and arrange bespoke cruises around Greek islands throughout the year. As we drove past meadows, we marveled at the green landscape. We got chatting with the cab driver who filled us in on many fascinating tales about Greek mythology, the stories got me all excited and I couldn’t wait to unravel the mysteries of the Greek paradise myself. Any visitor to Athens will be struck by the surreal feel of modern life built around ancient temples and monuments. While walking down the narrow streets of the city, it is hard not to feel drawn back to the ages of Greek gods and

goddesses but the modern charm pulls you away from the dreams at the same time! We crossed several monuments like the ancient Temple of Zeus, the father of all gods, the Acropolis that includes the Parthenon among several Temples of Athena. Athena (Roman Minerva) the goddess of wisdom was the most popular of the goddesses. As we reached the hotel, without wasting a moment, we kept our luggage and set out to explore the city on foot. We took a map of the city and headed straight to the Acropolis Museum. After crossing the ground floor lobby of the Museum, the first collection that we witnessed was breathtaking to say the least. An ascending, wide glassfloored gallery houses finds from the ruins of the Acropolis. The museum also houses sanctuaries that were founded on the slopes of the Acropolis, as well as objects that Athenians used in everyday life from all historic periods. We then went onto the other floors where we saw the evolution of the Greek mythology through the Archaic Gallery, Parthenon Gallery, The Temple of Athena Nike, The Erechtheion and more. After having travelled the previous night to Athens and not resting even for a moment, we definitely needed coffee to rejuvenate ourselves. We sat at the Museum Café which is located on the ground floor level which overlooks the archaeological excavation of Acropolis. The Museum provides a panoramic view of the Acropolis and a 700

square meter public terrace commands a breathtaking view of the historic hills of Athens. Sit down for a coffee and as you sip your coffee you not only get to enjoy the buzzing alfresco cafe culture, but you also get to feast your eyes on the amazing Acropolis high above you. We walked back to our hotel through the Plaka district which is an old town and the last remnant of pre-Greek independence Athens. This is where we saw 17th and 18th century red tiled Turkish town buildings, small squares and

archeological sites. Athens has approximately 40 museums and historic sites but the most important ones amongst those that are not to be missed are the Acropolis, The Agora (ancient market), The Parthenon, (the main temple dedicated to Athena Parthenos), Hadrians Arch, Parliament Building, The Plaka District and the Acropolis Museum. We ended the day with a hearty Greek meal at a small tavern run by a Greek family for the past 30 years; friendly, warm and full of life is what you can expect Greek men and women to be like. While having dinner we got chatting with the owners of the tavern who enlightened us with interesting facts on food and places to visit in Greece. Towering over the entire city of Athens, the Acropolis, which floodlit at night casts a golden glow, was a befitting sight from my hotel balcony. Our first day ended in a memorable way. Greece is known to have 2500 islands, distinguished by its own charm and characteristics. Our trip had begun to get more exciting as the next day we were booked on a three day cruise around some of the most fascinating islands in Greece. My colleague and I were picked up from our hotel and driven straight to Marina Zea, Piraeus. Piraeus is the main port of Athens for some 2800 years and is the hub of the modern Greek ferry system. Our itinerary for the next three days was arranged by Variety Cruises. The company is known to offer “a total

The day after that we sailed to Santorini where we experienced the stunning natural drama of the volcanic caldera and a tour to archaeological sites and typical villages with unique views over the Aegean Sea. That was followed with an overnight sail to Crete, the famous and lively port of Rethymnon which included an excursion to the ancient city of Knossos near Heraklion. An experience like never before Cruising on a ship puts you in a time warp and it is almost like rediscovering yourself and one is happy because Greece means equal doses of history and hedonism. Personal Favourites Mykonos Approaching the island from the sea, we were awed by the large windmills on the shoreline. They seemed like huge white birds sprawled across the blue horizon. Ah! Mykonos! Bathed in brilliant sunshine, it is the stuff romances are made of, literally, to-die-for enchantment! Santorini While at sea, reeling from rocking motion of the strong Aegean waves, our trip to Santorini was unique. As our ship drew closer to the volcanic island of Santorini, from a distance, nothing seemed special about the island, but as we moved in we figured out its unique shape and instant appeal. I’ll never forget our first sighting! Pure white villas, bright pink bougainvillea, turquoise blue domed churches and the sparkling blue of the sea. Crete Unlike the earlier islands, as we approached Crete, I felt we were entering a big industrial town. Crete is the biggest Greek island with 57,000 inhabitants that provides the hospitality and relaxation for those who need some time off from the real world. This is where Knossos, the famous

Minoan Palace lies five kilometers southeast of Heraklion, in the valley of the river Kairatos. Kythera As we approached the small and quaint island of Kythira, this is where I felt I was in paradise. As we walked across the town, white houses with blue doors and windows looked picturesque. The island is still quite underdeveloped and it looks like a calm refuge, with astonishing deserted beaches and traditional life. Monemvassia As we docked at the castle town of Monemvassia, the island charms you with its narrow cobbled alleys. In the main valley you can visit beautiful small shops, coffee shops and restaurants. It is as if time has stopped in the middle aged period, in the Byzantine castle with the mansions, the Byzantine churches which are wedged in the houses, the arches and Agiou Markou coats of arms, remnants of the Venetians. Memories to cherish Few things that we did not miss out and would like you to experience too is that when you go to Greece, make sure to buy some olives, olive oil, Greek honey, ouzo and Greek artefacts to take home and do not forget to check out the Greek baklava, curds with honey and gyros, the typical Greek `hamburger’. The hotel’s theme based on the travel of the 14thcentury explorer of the same name gives is undoubtedly its USP. Among its many highlights are themed floors, themed restaurants and a massive statement arch that serves as a gateway of modern days. When you step into the hotel, the reception and the waiting area is akin to many renowned 5-star hotels; simple and moderately sized with friendly staff who are quick to assist you with your request. But it does not prepare you for what lies beyond the sheen of the neutral shaded curtains in the waiting lounge. For there lies one of the most striking hotel lobbies in the glitzy city. The huge and stunning lobby has 88 specially created lanterns that hang splendidly from the high ceiling, lighting up the hotel’s most attractive area. The lobby is also the connecting point to the hotel’s various themed restaurants and is the perfect place to lounge with a drink or sweet treat from the pastisserie, Pastane. It took 60 weeks to set up the 90x30-metre lights. The hotel is home to a number of restaurants that are as eclectic as Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel itself. delicacies and even large earthern pots to cook Indian bread in; Sicilia serves up amazing Italian cuisine while Shanghai Chic is a trendy and exquisite Chinese restaurant. The Moroc Lounge and Bar is just lovely to lounge after a meal or enjoy a pre-dinner drink. The shishas on offer are great too. If you have a sweet tooth, then the gourmet shop Pastane is a must-visit. Light bites, sweet temptations and tea/coffee are the highlights of this wonderful gourmet store. Each floor of the hotel is themed to relate to the traveller’s places of visit — India, Persia, Egypt, Russia, Thailand, Turkey, Tanzania, Morocco and Andalucia. We were given the spacious and tastefully decorated China Suite. Surprisingly (and definitely well-thought), the room was not swathed in bright red and gold. There are red accents but in warm earthy red tones provide the perfect backdrop for the various themed artifacts. Our Suite included a spacious living room with well demarcated areas for dining and working. The bedroom is just as roomy with a dressing area and ample storage space and cabinets. If you are a stickler for a well-appointed room, then you would be pleased with the amenities provided for


the guest’s use – iron and ironing board, extra pillows, fabric brush and more. The balcony of the room is another treat. Though it offers only a view of the Ibn Battuta Mall, sitting out with a book or sipping on a lovely beverage is a great way to unwind. The bathroom deserves special mention. One of the largest we have seen, the bathroom is split into separate spaces for the bathtub, shower and the vanity area. Glass walls separate the bathroom from the room. All the suites have the option of being connected to an adjacent double room. The 29 suites are decorated according to the 10 themes. There is also an executive floor for businessmen with a lounge for the busy traveller. This

is yet another highlight of the hotel. The rooms on this floor are spacious and well-designed, keeping the business traveller in mind. The hotel also has 10 conference rooms and one theatre style ball room that can accommodate up to 200 guests. The hotel’s eighth floor titled Zanzibar houses a gym, spa and lap pool. Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel is a great destination for families too. There are facilities for kids to be kept engaged and the lovely staff is quite accommodating, which is so essential when traveling with family. Our stay at the hotel, though on a business trip, was refreshing and wonderful. Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel is definitely poised to become one of the popular destination hotels in the region. We can’t wait to go back for a break!

The Happiness Project Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun 

T

he title admittedly is quite a mouthful, and, not to mention, a tad overwhelming. However, former lawyer turned writer, New York-based Gretchen Rubin’s memoir, The Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun has nonetheless remained firmly lodged on top of the New York Times’ Best-sellers’ list for weeks. Inspired by an epiphany when sitting in a New York bus as to figure out what factors contributed towards the making of happiness for Rubin, at least, the author says she began her very own happiness project to test her hypothesis that she could become happier by making small changes in her ordinary day. The book is a memoir of a year she spent in doing that. The book has been enormously popular and even spawned off The Happiness Project clubs; Rubin also regularly updates her The Happiness Project blog (www.happiness-project.com) in which she continues to meditate and contemplate upon aspects that both contribute towards and get in the way of happiness. Incidentally, the blog was what served as the basis of her book. During an era when non-fiction books are increasingly becoming more popular than ever, The Happiness Project is an alternative pathway towards grasping that most elusive, coveted and precious human emotion of them all: happiness. Rubin interweaves the book with personal experience and meticulous research into the nature of happiness. While the notion of the book and the results may be a subject of debate, the book however serves as an interesting counterpoint to the thousands of self-help and well being titles that also strive to chart out the journey to happiness.

I

n 1999, Bengali-American writer, Jhumpa Lahiri won the Pulitzer Prize for her debut book, a collection of short stories entitled Interpreter of Maladies. The titular short story deals with an interpreter who uses his gift of polyphony to translate ailments of patients to their doctor. In 2011, another fellow Bengali-American, Dr. Siddartha Mukherjee has happened to have been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction for his powerful non-fiction book on cancer, The Emperor of All Maladies. Described as a ‘biography’of cancer, the book documents the journey of cancer in a global and historical context, from its first recorded appearance thousands of years ago to the contemporary era’s relentless attempts to understand and fight it. Oncologist, researcher, and award-winning science writer, Mukherjee’s literary skill is evident in the way he is able to present the book as an engaging, sensitive and compelling means of comprehending cancer. “The book is to demystify cancer and an intellectual history of cancer and in that process a social and cultural history of cancer as well,” said Mukherjee, when asked to describe the nature of the book prior to its release. Far from being a scholarly tome on the disease, The Emperor of All Maladies instead presents cancer as a character in its own right, thus accounting for the description of the book as a biography and bringing the reader closer to the multiple manifestations of the disease and its impact upon humans. On May 18th, the world’s most precious shoes mounted the famous steps of the Palais des Festivals on the feet of Supermodel Anja Rubik, before being auctioned the next day at the traditional AmFAR – Cinema Against AIDS benefit gala. Chopard Co-President Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele chose to unite her talent with that of Italian shoe designer Giuseppe Zanotti for a one-of-a-kind creation: gem-set stilettos that were auctioned on May 19th on behalf of the fight against AIDS. “Chopard is a long-time supporter of AmFAR, and in particular of its gala in Cannes”, said Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele.“This year, we wished to support the charity through an idea than took shape when I met Giuseppe Zanotti. Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele came up with the idea of creating a pair of earrings matching with the Chopard and Zanotti precious shoes. This fantastic and innovative jewellery set will be a first on a red carpet, further establishing Chopard as a front runner in the jewellery world. All eyes were on the shoes and earrings when Rubik stepped out on the Red Carpet on 18th May. The pinktoned set was made of tourmalines, rusellites, pastel sapphires and pink quartz. The precious ankle straps of the shoes are removable to be worn as a bracelet. Given the numerous similarities in their way of working, the cooperation between the Geneva-based jeweller and the Italian shoe designer, both at the peak of their professions, was an entirely natural partnership. Like Cinderella’s slipper, the shoe by Chopard and Zanotti has gone down, not in legend, but history!

My View

Home is where the heart is H

ome might be where the heart is; but in today’s super-mobile world – where is the heart? For most urban Omanis, the answer is easy – home is in their family villages. This is increasingly not the case for expatriates, who find after many years abroad, home isn’t home anymore. When I think back to the homes I had in Canada – the one I loved most was the house of cedar and glass that I once built on a large wooded property in Vancouver. Originally, it was an old cottage with faulty wiring that burned down shortly after we moved in. I sat on the hardwood floor, which, along with the old red brick fireplace, was all that was left after the fire damage was cleared - and looked all around… at the lush bamboo, the huge cedars, the wild green meadow and the water flowing in the creek below. I decided in that moment that I wanted a house with all this in sight. The house I designed was all glass, including the interior doors, except for the basic structure which was made of red cedar. The ‘curtains’ were the trees that surrounded the house. It was simple, small and incredibly beautiful. The view was everywhere and life centred round the old fireplace. Every night, I would light the fire and hear it crackle above the murmur of the creek. I would watch the burning logs as I cooked dinner; and later enjoy the glowing embers, as my daughter did her homework and I prepared my lectures. For me, home has always been, and probably

always will be, the hearth. So how have I adapted to Oman?! Well, now that I think of it, I have made an antique Indian bench into the equivalent of a fireplace. I sit up there among the cushions and piles of books in the closest comfort I can have to the warm and cosy atmosphere that a fireplace creates. I have had thrice to move house in Muscat; and, each time, the first thing I do is set up the old Indian bench as my ‘nest’ in the house. My friends have a similar perspective. Puja Khimji puts it well: “You travel, and wherever you go, your heart goes with you, and so you can create a home anywhere”. Diplomats are in agreement. Ambassador Stephan van Wersch, remarking that, in Dutch, there is also an expression linking home with heart, says, “Home is not a place; it is a state of mind; and it’s good if your home means a lot. Our children are tremendously enriched by living in different places, but the advantage of having only one home is that you feel rooted”. Interestingly, I have noted in my travels that some places feel more like home than others - and in different ways. India is a place where I feel spiritually at home. It is in Buddhist countries that I feel culturally most at home. In the wilderness of Southern Africa, I feel physically at home, maybe because that is where our species originated... No doubt, if you and I were to travel in space and come back, all of the Earth would feel like home.
