Concerto for Violin and Viola

Our opening program features three works for violin, Henri Vieuxtemps’ Violin Concerto No. 5 — a delightfully classical work — followed by Saint-Saëns’ tour de force, his Introduction and Rondo capriccioso, and the rarely heard, Concerto for Violin and Viola by Benjamin Britten. Rachel Barton Pine enthralled us in the early 2000’s and has a commanding stage presence. Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro Overture and Haydn’s Symphony No. 96 in D ‘The Miracle,’ bookend this noble program.

LEWIS

It is not often one may hear a keyboard concerto by J.S. Bach on the piano. Coupled with Mendelssohn’s flashy Piano Concerto No. 1, and in the hands of soloist Ilya Yakushev, we will be rocking. We pair these two works with a sampling of twentieth century offerings by Schoenberg, his Chamber Symphony No. 2 and Paul Lewis’s English Suite for strings.

Piano Concerto No. 11 in D major

Shai Wosner has performed Beethoven and Mozart on his previous visits to Madison. In making the triumvirate complete, he will perform two concertos by Haydn. The pairing with Schubert’s Symphony No. 2 places us squarely in the classical age. We open with a neo-Romantic work by Italian-American composer, Vittorio Giannini, his Prelude and Fugue from 1955.

MASTERWORKS IV MARCH 20, 2015 | 8 PM | CAPITOL THEATER Amit Peled returns for Schumann’s late work, his Cello Concerto in A minor, and a special arrangement of Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata. Always one for interesting discoveries, Amit’s stage presence and power is magical. English composer Frank Bridge’s string writing is both formidable and superb in his Suite for String Orchestra, and Mozart’s timeless Symphony No. 40 in G minor, never grows old.

BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 7 in A major

Back by popular demand, Bryan Wallick dazzled us with his stunning performance of Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 5, the ‘Egyptian,’ in 2013. He returns to perform the ‘Emperor’ Concerto in this all-Beethoven show-stopper. Opening the concert is the Leonore Overture No. 1, the first of four overtures written for his one and only opera, Fidelio, and concluding with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A major, one of those works you never get tired of listening to.

“Wallick pulled off the virtuoso fireworks with ease, but also with a sense of Gallic elegance.” –The Daily Page
