Originally settled in 1781 by settlers from Mexican provinces. Mexico was still under Spanish rule. Mexico declared independence in 1821. Became American city in 1847 when captured during the Mexican-American War. South Pacific Railroad line was completed in 1876, oil was discovered shortly after. 1910, Hollywood created. Generated much revenue during the Great Depression.

A HISTORY OF RACIAL TENSION Chinese workers were brought in to help complete Railroads extending the coast of California.
1880s - CHINESE HELP BUILD RAILROAD Mexican workers were exploited for cheap labor during the great depression.
1930s - MEXICANS HELP HARVEST CROPS
RIOTS
During the WWII, soldiers stationed in LA did not approve of the Mexican youth’s zoot suits.
1943 - ZOOT SUIT RIOT After police offers pulled over an African American driver, the neighborhood began to get violent by throwing rocks at the officers. Aprox 4,000 arrests, 40 Million in damages.
1965 - WATTS RIOT After four officers were acquitted after being caught on tape beating Rodney king, African Americans and Hispanics took to the streets, looting and burning down stores.
1992 - RODNEY KING RIOT
CONCLUSION AND BIBLIOGRAPHY LOS ANGELES IS A REGIONAL AUTHORITY WITH A VERY UNIQUE RACIAL COMPOSITION. BECAUSE OF THIS, LOS ANGELES HAS A HISTORY OF RACIAL TENSION.
