COPS KICK IN DOOR DURING BLOODY DOMESTIC ARGUMENT October 2, 2020 Lori Mason - scoopmemphis.com 28-year-old Genise Jones was charged with domestic assault when her neighbor called police about an argument between her and her boyfriend where she hit him in the head with a pot and he pushed her in return. On September 26th, Memphis Police officers responded to a call at 4455 Macon Road in reference to a possible assault. Officer Heisler, Officer Tyson, and Officer Chumney approached the apartment and could hear a verbal argument in progress. Officers then knocked on the door and announced their presence. A female voice screamed, “help me, get me out of here.” Officers advised Lieutenant Preble via dispatch of the situation and were authorized the forced entry due to the situation. Officer Heisler stated that he heard a male voice whispering followed by the female voice saying “please go away.” Officer Tyson kicked in the door and officers located Stanley Truitt and his girlfriend, Genise Jones. Truitt was standing in the middle of the front room grasping Jones by both arms. Both parties had cuts on their heads and mouths. There was blood on the floor according to the report. Truitt refused to elaborate but admitted to officers that he pushed Jones after she hit him with a pot. Jones refused to cooperate or provide any Genise Jones (SCSO) statement. Truitt made a spontaneous comment on the scene, “I stopped her before she could say anything.” Officers stated that Truitt’s daughter was in a back bedroom asleep. Officers contacted April Anderson, Truitt’s sister, who came to the apartment to secure and take possession of the apartment and custody of the child per Truitt’s request. Truitt and Jones refused to cooperate with officers and were placed into custody. Genise Jones was arrested and charged with domestic assault. She was later released on her own recognizance.

TEEN THREATENS TO “SMACK THE SH*T” OUT OF HIS MOTHER DURING ARGUMENT ABOUT GAS MONEY September 23, 2020Sebastian Shaw www.scoopmemphis.com 18-year-old Alonzo Finely was charged with domestic assault and vandalism when he threatened his mother during an argument about gas money. On September 19th, Memphis Police Department Officers Voller and Pellett arrived at 298 Carbon Road and spoke to Marquita Piggies. She said that her son, Alonzo Finely, was arguing with her about gas money. Further, she stated that Finely was upset and left through the back door to walk around the front, kicked over her trash can, and punched her storm door. After shattering her door he stood outside and said, “Bitch I’m gonna smack the shit out of you,” and “Bitch you better come out.” Alonzo did so intending to fight with Piggies, and police spoke to neighbors who saw Alonzo out front by himself as well as intentionally hitting the storm door. Piggies also told police that her storm door is worth about $500. When police arrived, Alonzo had already fled from the premises but showed up later to be placed into custody after Piggies called them again. Alonzo Finely was arrested and charged with domestic assault and vandalism. He was later released on his own recognizance.

THREE CHARGED IN SHOOTING AT JACKSON MOTEL October 5, 2020ÊÊJulia Ewoldt - wbbjtv.com JACKSON, Tenn. — Three people are charged in a shooting at a local motel. Ashley Carroll, Cody Marbry, and Ashley Donahoe —Ê all three are charged with especially aggravated robbery and attempted first degree murder. Donahoe and Marbry were in court Monday morning, while Carroll was arraigned Friday. “On the 29th day of September at the Travelodge, there was a shooting. They located Jimmy Acuff suffering from a single gunshot wound,” Judge Blake Anderson read from the affidavit. Court records say the three, who are not from Jackson, devised a plan to come to Jackson and rob Acuff. “The plan was to rob Acuff of a black box which they believed contained a large sum of money,” Judge Anderson read. It’s unclear who actually shot Acuff. Two other people are mentioned in the affidavits, but there is no indication they have been charged. “Video shows three males approaching Jimmy in his parked car while he was talking to Ashley Carroll,” Judge Anderson said. “Two of the males brandished firearms and one of the males shot Jimmy.” After the shooting, court records say the men took off, leaving Ashley Carroll at the motel. She was 300 N. College St. - Trenton, Tn 38382 picked up by police. Police also found the black box. According to court documents, Carroll waived her Miranda rights and told police what happened, which was backed up by security footage. All three bonds were set at $300,000.

THE CRIMESEEN
I’ve entitled this post “The Crosswalk”.Ê While typing this, I’m watching 3 teenage boys (2 African American and 1 Caucasian) talk and peacefully laugh while walking underneath “The Crosswalk”. This long post has 2 parts...and I’ll number them 1 & 2 below* (Because I’m OCD, and, for better or worse, that’s “just how I roll” ). The first numbered paragraph is to set up what’s truly on my mind today (which is primarily Paragraph # 2), as I was near my High School and thought I’d just go by for a look and to reflect during this COVID-19 experience. So, since I’m only 1 in nearly 8 Billion people in the world, I’m mainly and politely just asking all of us local Jackson and West TN folks to focus on the second numbered paragraph. I can’t change the world, but maybe (even with all my imperfections) I can help change our community that I’ve lived in for nearly 60 years. Here I go: 1. Over the last few years I’ve retreated from posting political, religious, philosophical, social or generally existential “stuff” on social media, other than some benignly sincere quotes from others that would fit within the general realm of “encouragement”. My social media is now more of a family scrapbook or to promote my business. Others employ it in different ways...which is GREAT and I SUPPORT THAT. Many folks do get very specific and I enjoy reading everyone’s point of view on ALL things. We are entitled to have a political party, religious beliefs and certain preferences. That, of course, is the bedrock principle of The “UNITED”* States of America.(*Yes, please notice how I accentuated “UNITED”). With that being said, I’ll move on to #2. 2. “The Crosswalk” was a functional creation to bring two schools together after a long, horrible, violent and oppressive history in our nation. And, frankly, those words/descriptions for what preceded are an understatement. YET, for me & my “Classmates”, “The Crosswalk” always represented “healing” and “unity” when I attended and proudly graduated from Jackson Central Merry High School.* (*NOTE-PLEASE EXCUSE THE FOLLOWING BRIEF DIGRESSION: I personally don’t hyphenate my Alma Mater,...nor the acronym JCM,...as it subtlety represents separation,...an historically unnecessary hyphen if you will). Now, back to my observation today. “The Crosswalk” meandered, like history, not in a perfect straight line. But, while conceived & crafted because of the imperfections of the past, it nevertheless became a “gathering place” between classes,...a “covering” for shade from the hot sun and sometimes a temporary “shelter” from some very hard rains.* (*I know!...I know!...full of eye rolling metaphors.) BUT, my Friends, those are “good” words and “good” phrases...Right?: CLASSMATES, HEALING, UNITY, GATHERING PLACE, COVERING, & SHELTER. Those of us that walked and gathered underneath “The Crosswalk” from 1972 to 2016, no matter what our race, were protected from the same sun, and the same rain, and the same elements,...and, EVERY DAY we gathered & walked back and forth “TOGETHER”* (*Another good word). If you read this, I thank you for allowing me to express myself,...for what I hope will perhaps in some small way create some positive thoughts, important forward steps, and a more dignified unity for our City, County and Region. We are all in this together. Be kind, one to another. Mark Patey
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! I don’t understand how the DA can continue to try and control my office with racist tactics and continue to punish an innocent employee of mine just because they have the power to do so. This place continues to be a racist hot spot that still believes that this is the 1950’s and that black people have no rights that they have to respect. We need a protest to change the political foundation of Jackson. Enough is enough! City Court Clerk Darryl Hubbard

Well it is time for an update on what is going on in JMCSS. There are so many positives that I hardly know where to begin! Very soon there will be on campus options for about 40% of the students that selected that option at the start of the semester. I have been subbing in Gibson County Special School District and from what the students have told me they learn better and prefer being on campus. I am continually impressed by the tremendous job being done by Dr. Marlon King and his staff at JMCSS. They have secured over 900K of grant money to carry out their goals for this school year. Let us hope that the new school board will embrace and support this superintendent as he strives to be inclusive and practices what he preaches! Businesses realize that literacy promotes a thriving community and builds secure futures. No longer can it be said that the community does not support students and education in Jackson. All you need do is look at the numbers from the resources local businesses have made available to the school system. Faith based communities are opening their doors to give space for students to learn, have connection to the internet and a bit of mentorship as well. Teachers are accomplishing amazing gains through their efforts but most I have spoken to prefer face to face instruction. Teachers take ownership of their classes and are very serious in their efforts to equip their students to be successful in life.
STUDENTS ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE AND MAKE IT YOURS! We are in the digital age and the new normal in education will integrate technology as never before. Students, you must learn to be resilient as your career will be launched in the age of lifelong learning. Whichever option you choose there are those prepared to provide assistance. There will be problems and issues but we learn together by doing. Dr. King and his team are focused on winning and if you want to be a part of the winning team then you have to do your part. You can find information online, in the news or simply download the JMCSS app for your tablet or smart phone device. I am hoping to be issued my winning mask soon as I get opportunities to sub at JMCSS.Ê “The key to the ability to change is a
changeless sense of who you are, what you are about and what you value.”—Steven R. Covey I look forward to having an opportunity to learn and win together with you! Don Polley | Education contributorÊ (Contact don@donpolley.com)

West Tennessee Veterans Coalition Honors American Legion Post 12 Commander, Hugh Culver The West Tennessee Veterans Coalition honored Hugh Culver on Monday, October 5, 2020 with a Certificate of Appreciation for Hugh’s ongoing support of our nation’s veterans. Hugh is Post Commander of American Legion Post 12 in Jackson, TN. The presentation was made by Veterans Coalition Chair Jackie Utley. Recently, an out-ofstate veteran found himself in downtown Jackson, with no money and an American Legion membership card in his wallet. He was directed to The Blacksmith Restaurant, where the staff contacted the commander of American Legion Post 12, Hugh Culver, to assist with transportation for the veteran. Coalition Chair, Jackie Utley, said in making the presentation, “The American Legion nationally has provided veterans with support and aid, illustrated locally by Hugh’s assistance for a single veteran passing through Jackson trying to get back home to his family. Whatever the needs, American Legion members are ready to assist. And the Veterans Coalition recognizes and thanks Hugh Culver, Post Commander, for his support for all veterans.”
