DEER HUNTING GUIDE
West Tennessee
OUTDOORS
with Ray Jones
Send photos to: Hard to believe numberonecoach@hotmail.com it but deer hunting or 731-694-8614 season has already begun and is in full bloom. Archery season started September 25th and runs through November 5th. Because we are located within the Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) zone there are regulations that must be followed. Chester, Crockett, Fayette, Gibson, Hardeman, Haywood, Henderson, Lauderdale, Madison, McNairy, Shelby and Tipton counties are located within the CWD zone. Deer carcass transportation and feeding restrictions apply to all of these high risk areas. Deer carcass cannot be moved outside of the CWD zone but can be moved to other CWD counties. All deer must be taken to an approved site for testing before deer can be safely consumed. There is no link between positive deer harming humans but they are deadly to other deer. If a hunter harvest a positive deer they will be given the opportunity to replace the deer for free. There are also feeding restrictions within the positive zone for grain and salt blocks because deer that share the same food plots can pass the disease to other deer. Be sure to know the rules on deer hunting before you head out to the woods. We will continue the deer hunting series to insure that hunters are aware of all the new regulations so you can be ready for the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee.

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department has received positive test results for 53 more cases of COVID-19 since Friday, Oct. 8, 2021. We now have 17,984 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Madison County. Epidemiology staff are reaching out to these individuals and people who had close contact with these cases. MADISON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE PROMOTES
“SLOW DOWN TENNESSEE” TO REDUCE SPEEDING-RELATED CRASHES
Jackson, TN – The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) to promote “Slow Down Tennessee.” During October 15 – 29, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office will increase education and enforcement efforts to help reduce speeding-related crashes, injuries, and fatalities statewide. The public is encouraged to participate by using #SlowDownTN on social media to help spread awareness. Sergeant Richard King noted, “In Madison County, speeding issues generate the most calls we get from concerned citizens in their neighborhoods. We respond and concentrate on specific areas, especially where children play and ride school buses, so please slow down Madison County”! The State of Tennessee requires motorists to always exercise due care and maintain a safe speed while driving. Speed limits may vary depending on the county and road conditions; therefore, drivers must always pay attention and adhere to posted speed limits to ensure the safety of all roadway users.

Wendy’s customer doused with hot oil by shift manager in Huntingdon October 6, 2021 Kyle Peppers HUNTINGDON, Tenn. — A fast food manager was arrested in Huntingdon after police say he doused a customer with hot oil. According to a police report, a man purchased food in a Wendy’s drive-thru late Tuesday night, before returning to inform an employee that his food was cold. The situation escalated to a verbal altercation between the customer and 21-year-
old Demarrus Pritchett,
who was working in his role as shift manager. Surveillance footage showed Pritchett obtain a pan of hot oil from the kitchen, walk back to the drive-thru, and pour it over the customer through the window. The victim received extensive burns on his left side and arm and was treated for his injuries at Baptist Memorial Hospital. While in custody, Pritchett admitted to throwing the hot oil and claimed he had been previously harassed by the victim. Pritchett was charged with aggravated assault and has since been released on bond. We spoke with the victim’s mother Wednesday, who says he currently isn’t in good condition and hopes “justice is served.”

U.S. House Votes to End Sentencing Disparity Between Crack and Powder Cocaine
NNPA NEWSWIRE — In 2009, Congressman Bobby Scott led an effort in the U.S. House to eliminate the crack/cocaine disparity in the Fairness in Cocaine Sentencing Act. That effort eventually led to the 2010 passage of the Fair Sentencing Act, which reduced the crack cocaine disparity from 100:1 to 18:1. October 3, 2021By Lauren Victoria Burke - NNPA Newswire Contributor
In March U.S. House Democrats Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Bobby Scott (D-VA) joined Republican Reps. Kelly Armstrong (R-ND) and Don Bacon (R-NE) to introduce a bill called the “Eliminating a Quantifiably Unjust Application of the Law (EQUAL) Act.” The mandates that the federal crack and powder cocaine sentencing disparity would end. It would also retroactively apply the change to those already convicted or sentenced. On September 28, the U.S. House passed the bill by a vote of 361-66. Now the U.S. Senate has an opportunity to pass the bill and send it to President Biden’s desk. Doing so would put an end to one of the worst legacies of the war on drugs. In 2009, Congressman Bobby Scott led an effort in the U.S. House to eliminate the crack/cocaine disparity in the Fairness in Cocaine Sentencing Act. That effort eventually led to the 2010 passage of the Fair Sentencing Act, which reduced the crack cocaine disparity from 100:1 to 18:1. “For years, we have known that harsh drug sentencing disparities between crack and powder cocaine have created a racially disparate impact on Black communities. The bipartisan EQUAL Act is the next step on the long road toward eliminating this unfair sentencing disparity,” Rep. Scott said in a statement. “Eliminating the crack-powder cocaine sentencing disparity is a step toward applying equal justice under the law. I will continue to work with Representative Jeffries and advocate for it in the Senate so this long overdue legislation can get to the president’s desk and signed into law,” said Congressman Armstrong, a Republican from North Dakota. “The EQUAL Act will help reverse engineer the tragic legacy of the failed war on drugs which has devastated lives, families and communities. Crack cocaine has historically been used in inner-city communities and powder cocaine in affluent neighborhoods and the suburbs. That does not justify the wide disparity in sentencing. I thank the tremendous leadership of Rep. Armstrong and all my colleagues in the House who supported this legislation and are committed to burying the failed war on drugs and making the promise of equal justice for all a reality,” said Congressman Jeffries. The moment of bipartisan progress on justice reform legislation stands in contrasts with the recent failure on the George Floyd Justice reform bill which was being negotiated by Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) and others. Last week the talks ended in failure.

U.S. Black Chamber Prez Talks Loss of African American Businesses and a Global Future for the Black Dollar
By Stacy M. Brown Ron Busby, the president and CEO of the U.S. Black Chambers, Inc., said the U.S. Black Chamber also works with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce by joining quarterly discussions on issues pertinent to African American business owners.Ron Busby, the president and CEO of the U.S. Black Chambers, Inc., said the U.S. Black Chamber also works with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce by joining quarterly discussions on issues pertinent to African American business owners. During the first three months of the pandemic, approximately 442,000 – or 41 percent – of Black businesses shuttered. As COVID continues to hamper progress, the overall decline of small and minority-owned firms remains striking. Data culled from multiple studies revealed that Latinx business owners fell by 32 percent and Asian business owners dropped by 26 percent. Meanwhile, the number of White business owners fell by 17 percent. While the current climate has exacerbated the wealth gap and unveiled the unimagined financial straits of Black and other minority companies, studies also revealed that about 58 percent of African American-owned businesses were at risk of fiscal distress even before the outbreak of the pandemic in February 2020. “There’s no question it has been a challenge,” said Ron Busby, the president and CEO of the U.S. Black Chambers, Inc. in Northwest, Washington, D.C. “Last year was a difficult time for the majority of businesses in America with COVID, the murder of George Floyd, and the Stimulus Package – or lack thereof, in our community,” said Busby, who visited the new state-of-the-art television studios of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) for an appearance on PBS-TV’s “The Chavis Chronicles.” NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. hosts the nationally televised program. “When you talk to Black business owners, very few received any stimulus money,” Busby continued. “We lost 41 percent of Black businesses, and many of them will never re-open, and many of those firms had employees, vendors, and customers.” blackpressusa.comcom/u-s-black-chamber

Dragons stumble at KSU, 45-14
by Joel Worthington FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Lane College football team dropped a division game against Kentucky State on Saturday. The Thorobred rushing attack was more than the Lane defense could handle as they racked up 472 yards on the ground and seven touchdowns. The Lane offense had success moving the ball at times but sputtered late in drives due to penalties or negative plays. The visitors found the most success through the air, amassing 275 yards from three different passers. Michael Huntley led the way going 14-of-24 for 171 yards and a touchdown. Virgil Young led all receivers with seven catches for 111 yards and a 32-yard touchdown reception. Jeremiah Brown racked up nine total tackles from the safety position, while Andrew Farmer finished with eight tackles. The Dragons will be back at home for Senior Day next Saturday, October 16th, when they host the Golden Bears of Miles College. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 PM at Lane Field.

Humboldt Sr. Center Making Festive Wreaths
Another awesome art class last week. These ladies are just doing an awesome job. They were actually graded on a project that they had to do by themselves at home without my help. They were graded by secret ballots; and they had to grade each other Art. To be honest, I was just taken back by the work that they had done by themselves. I looked at every detail. I looked at the front and back of each wreath. Mrs. Patsy Womack had to leave early and we didn’t get to take a picture of her wreath. It was absolutely amazing. These ladies are really getting into this class and they are doing exceptional well. Some of them are selling their wreaths. Here are the wreaths that each Senior did at home. Please show them some love. They were given a design by me and was told to take it and create their own art. This is the outcome.

Four indicted in West Memphis sex trafficking case by: David Royer - www.wreg.com
Oct 11, 2021 MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Four people in West Memphis, Arkansas were indicted by a federal grand jury on charges in a human trafficking case. State Prosecuting Attorney Keith L. Chrestman did not release the names of the four people indicted when he made the announcement Monday, but his office confirmed that the defendants are the same people identified by West Memphis Police in a rape and sex assault case earlier this year: Ricky Gaines, Victoria McClure, Bryan Donaldson and Randle Blair. The investigation began Jan. 9 of this year after a 17-year-old girl with no identification was found walking around the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter in West Memphis, asking for help, Chrestman’s office said in a news release. The girl told authorities she was from Phoenix and had been taken to West Memphis to work as a prostitute. She said she’d been sexually assaulted. Chrestman said subpoenaed text messages from the accused traffickers revealed they were planning to send another woman to West Memphis, saying “We have another girl … .” “We may have saved someone’s life,” Crittenden County Prosecuting Attorney Michael Snell said in the release. State prosecutors had already charged four people in the case, Chrestman’s office said — two men were charged with multiple rape counts; a third man with multiple rape counts, kidnapping, and trafficking; and a woman with kidnapping and trafficking. Snell said those state charges would be dismissed once the federal charges were imposed. In a separate news release Monday, West Memphis Police said a saturation effort had resulted in the arrests of eight people — including Donaldson, Gaines, McClure and Blair. It was unclear whether the four faced new charges or were being arrested in connection to the federal indictment. Police said the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office, State Police, ATF, and the US Marshals were “targeting violent fugitives and criminal offenders who committed high-profile crimes such as homicide, felony assault, and sexual assault, illegal possession of firearms, illegal drug distribution, robbery, and arson.

Police say that Jones switched with one of the passengers, and was found to be in possession of cocaine, marijuana, and a firearm. He was arrested and charged again. The release says Jones was indicted in June of 2020 for the two incidents. The release says on July 15, 2021, Jones was convicted by a jury for possession of cocaine with intent to sell or deliver, possession of marijuana with intent to sell or deliver, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, theft of property, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving on a revoked license. The release says he later pled guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell or deliver, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.
