by Downtown Ricky Brown Madison County Sheriff John Mehr is taking the Madison County Mayor and County Commission to Court over $5 million in denied funding over the past two years. This case first began 15 months ago as Sheriff Mehr initially sued Madison County and Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris on July 31, 2019. The civil trial began in Madison County Circuit Court October 13, with an expected wrap up of the findings and Judge’s decision by October 15 or 16. The trail has been delayed due to the coronavirus virus pandemic and issues with finding an impartial out of County Judge to hear the case. The parties were required to meet for mediation eariler this year to attempt a resolution without a judicial decision.Ê “ According to Mayor Jimmy Harris this went nowhere.”

FALL GARDENS

West Tennessee OUTDOORS

“ITS NOT TOO LATE”

If you are not harvesting you ought to be planting. If you are not planting you with Ray Jones ought to be on your way to SEND THOSE PHOTOS TO numberonecoach@hotmail.com purchase some plants. If you or 731-694-8614. are not on you way to purchase plants you ought to be planning to go. If you are not planning to go purchase plants you need to realize that it is not too late. You still have time to get a fall garden in because you can plant most things from plants instead of seeds and they can get off to a good start. The growing season is coming to an end but plants will continue to thrive throughout the fall season if you get them started. Fall gardens are less stressful because the heat is not a problem and weeds and pests are not as bad. Once you start having fall gardens they become easier than summer gardens and you will be surprised at how healthy they tend to be. R J Feed and Bells Hardware still have plants as well as many other garden centers that may be close to you. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to get out in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee and start a hobby that will last a lifetime. Be sure to teach the kids so they can appreciate the process of raising your own vegetables. PHOTO IS A FALL GARDEN WITH GREENS AND BROCCOLI.

Reader Writes . . . CALLING SOMEONE ‘A HOE’ IS BEYOND DISRESPECTFUL! So this FB Êassociate calls Senator Harris a “Hoe” so I asked him how did he know did he sleep with her? You know you Êcan disagree politically but calling someone a hoe is beyond disrespectful! Now Trumps wife has nude erotic pictures floating around, & some could definitely justify using that terminology describing her, but again people with integrity don’t go around calling people derogatory names because of political differences! Now saying a person is a liar is a big difference Ê- Tracie Blakemore ClaybrookÊ

THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT Ê Ê Something I hear every day is “If you don’t vote then you have no right to complain later”. Also I hear “It’s your duty to vote”. Like most mottos and slogans this sounds good on the surface but is it really logical when it plays out in real life. A case in point: I asked a close relative how they intended to vote in the upcoming national election and the response I got was “ I dunno, I’ll probably just vote for _______”.When I asked why his thoughts lead him in that direction he said “I think he’s probably better for climate change”. I guess everyone has their opinion but when I inquired what the candidates position on climate change was I was told “I think he’s against it”. After that I changed the topic of the conversation. There was no need to go further. So here was a person (a grownup) that basically might as well draw his vote out of a hat. He had not bothered to research any candidate or party platform to any degree but felt it important to go vote for somebody because it was his “right” .He would feel cheated if he did not exercise that right. I ask: “cheated of what”? I compare this situation of the right to vote to another right we all share - the right to drive an automobile. You indeed have the right to drive a car but it’s not logical to get in a car and start driving with no destination or plan for where you are going or how you’re going to get there. In fact you might just end up some place that you don’t want to be. When it comes to the “right to complain” I think that if you vote for someone and they win and you are not happy with them later, then maybe you have no right to complain in that instance. If the person you voted against happens to winÊ you doÊ have a right to complain but probably not with that candidate as much as with the voters that did vote for him. If you didn’t vote for either of them because you didn’t like either of them then YES, complain away .You have that right. If I do not like or approve of either candidate and I just randomly pull a lever in order to say I voted, then I have not done a service to anyone. Ê Ê Voter turnout in national elections has in modern times (since 1900)Ê Êranged from a low of 48.9% in 1924 to a high of 65.4% in 1908. Usually it falls somewhere between 50-60%. I don’t expect it to be different this time. My opinion on voting (and I know it’s not a popular one) is that if you really know nothing about the candidates and don’t care to learn then you should probably avoid doing it. Just like voting, a low voter turnout also sends a message. The message is : “I choose none of the above”. Voting is an important right, so don’t waste it. The right to remain silent can also be an important right. Use it wisely. Don’t hop in a car and drive to nowhere just because you can. read the maps first. Follow the signs. Have a clear sense of direction. Then drive. Contact: Elvis RogersÊ elvisrogers@yahoo.com

Firefighter Casey, Latrell Billingsley, Public Fire Education Officer, JFD Officer Ken Woodard with CrimeSEEN Examiner staff Downtown Ricky Brown at Kroger Lynnwood sharing with the public the importance of “Fire Prevention Week”. Saturday officers and firefighters from the Jackson Fire Department shares with the public the importance of “Fire Prevention” at their homes and businesses.Ê The Jackson Fire DeparÊ wants to keep you informed on Fire safety regarding smoke alarms. According to Public Education Officer Latrell Billingsley “we are reaching out to the public asking people to come out and sign up to receive a free smoke alarm”. We are not handling them out today or passing them out” we will take your information and at a later date we will set up a time to come to your place and install them free for you” On average a person dies in a house Fire within the first five minutes according to Billingsley” he said it’s even more important reason why we are advocating the installation of smoke alarms.Ê If they alert you early enough it gives you an ample amount of time to escape safety and to alert the police and fire departments to help save property and lives” Billingsley says a fire in the home can sometimes go unnoticed for a great amount of time especially at night”. A smoke alarm is your first line of defense so if you’re asleepÊ and something was to catch fire in the house you wouldn’t wake up because you smelled smoke most times”. It actually will probably put you into a further sleep” It does not take a house fire long to start.Ê A small fire doubles in size every 30 seconds so it takes about two minutes before a room fills up with deadly black smoke” Please contact the Jackson Fire Department for more information on fire safety in your home or a free smoke alarm installation at 731-425-8347.

SHERIFF MEHR TAKES MADISON COUNTY TO COURT - CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 In any case the taxpayers will suffer the consequences of this trail no matter the outcome according to Madison County Finance Director Karen Bell with combined attorneys fees from both sides exceeding $500,000 According to Sheriff John Mehr “I swore an oath to serve and protect the citizens of Madison County and that what I am going to do.” I’ve had many sleepless nights and prayer and I believe I am making the right decision to pursue this action and to stand up for my employees, who are the heart and soul of the Sheriffs Department “ Madison County is building a 50 million dollar jail in hopes of alleviating some of the overcrowding problems faced with liability” said Mehr, Madison County Cimmission Chairman Gary Deaton says “the Sheriff has added an attorney, a HR Director, a communications person, and a new ranking position he calls “major” that he hires his wife for” putting this all together and it adds up to real money and it costs Madison County hundreds of thousands of dollars yearly” If the sheriff wins this lawsuit he could win up to the additional $5 million he requested over the last two years. A Judge will decide whether he receives a partial or full amount of his request. The Madison County Commission has so far put the idea of the new Pope School on hold until the Sheriffs lawsuit concludes and the pandemic financial impact is better analyzed.Ê According to Budget Committee Commissioner Doug Stephenson if the county does win the lawsuit and there is only minimally impacts the county’s financial position, the a new Pope School is definitely on our radar.” H ELP

JMCSS JR. ROTARIANS MAKE APPEARANCE The COVID19 pandemic has altered the way our students learn and compete, but we should encourage them to take advantage of leadership and learning opportunities as they become available. Our Junior Rotarians are a great example of this. South Side High School senior Halle Webb, Madison Academic senior Isabella Arthurs and JCM Early College High senior Madison May represented their respective schools and our district at the Downtown Jackson Rotary Club this month. I am proud of their efforts and I look forward to seeing participation increase among JMCSS within Rotary and other local service organizations.

SHOWDOWN IS SHAPING UP

WE ARE LICENSED

Our high school football teams are competing for playoff spots and the county championship! Liberty will host South Side this Friday. Meanwhile North Side is on a bye-week. The Indians picked up their 2nd region win last Friday in a 69-54 win over Chester County. Yes...that was a football score! The Crusaders and Hawks will try to light up the scoreboard this week. Good luck to both teams.

JTA PARTNERS WITH CITY COUNCILMAN CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 “Anyone who wishes to ride will have to contact the Jackson Transit Authority. Social distancing will be in place,” Franklin said. “We just want to give this service to the City of Jackson.” The offer for a free ride starts this Wednesday, Oct. 14 and will last through the early voting period, which ends on Oct. 29. ERNEST BROOKS II TNDP EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE - DISTRIICT 27

NASHVILLE, Tenn. –ÊTennessee’s generous early voting period for the upcoming State and Federal General Election begins Wednesday, Oct. 14, and runs Monday to Saturday until Thursday, Oct. 29. “Our top priority, this election season is that every Tennessee voter can cast their ballot safely and securely,” said Secretary of State Tre Hargett. “Utilizing Tennessee’s robust early voting period is an excellent way to accomplish this goal.” Early voting provides Tennesseans the opportunity to avoid Election Day crowds and can shorten your wait time. Early voting also offers the flexibility of evenings and Saturdays, along with multiple polling locations in many counties. During early voting and on Election Day, Tennesseans are encouraged to do their part. This includes wearing a face covering and maintaining a six-foot distance from poll officials and other voters. Voters should expect to see signs with further safety instructions at their polling locations. All poll officials will be wearing face coverings and will be trained in social distancing measures. Tennesseans can find early voting and Election Day polling locations, view and mark sample ballots and much more with the GoVoteTN app or online at GoVoteTN.com. You can download the GoVoteTN app for free in the App Store or Google Play. Reviewing your sample ballot and deciding how you will vote can reduce your time at the polls. Tennesseans voting early or on Election Day should remember to bring valid photo identification with them to the polls. A driver’s license or photo ID issued by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, by the Tennessee state government or by the federal government, is acceptable even if it’s expired. College student IDs are not acceptable. For the latest information on the upcoming election, follow the Secretary of State’s social media channels Twitter: @SecTreHargett, Facebook: Tennessee Secretary of State and Instagram:@tnsecofstate.

PEYTON MANNING SPONSORS 6 HBCU SCHOLARSHIPS Manning’s Peyback Foundation was founded in 1999 by Peyton and his wife, Ashley

It is with great pleasure that I announce my graduation from Elite Barber College on October 9th, 2020. I have met and exceeded all requirements for my Master Barber Instructor Completion. At the age of 28 God has been good to me ...the road hasn’t been easy, but it was worth it. When I open my barber school next year, I’m passing the mantle to someone else. - MAURICE A. PATTERSON

Emeka Dibia thegrio.com Louisiana native and former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning has sponsored six endowedscholarships at historically Black colleges and universities, with the help of his foundation.Ê Manning grew up in New Orleans and went to Isidore Newman High School. Now famed NFL wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. also attended the school. After high school, Manning attended the University of Tennessee.Ê Former Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning stands on the field before a game between the Denver Broncos and the Cleveland Browns at Broncos Stadium at Mile High on December 15, 2018 in Denver, Colorado. (Photo by Justin Edmonds/ Getty Images) The scholarship awards went go to universities in the two states where he received his education. Four went to HBCUs in his home state of Louisiana. The remaining two went to black colleges in Tennessee.Ê The award for Grambling State University will bear the name of alumnus Doug Williams, the first Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl in 1987.Ê Williams, who currently serves as senior vice president for the Washington Football Team first learned that an “anonymous donor” was behind the donation.Ê He told ESPN, “Ha, you know I have my connections at Grambling. I made a phone call and found out it was Peyton Manning’s foundation and it was endowing a half-dozen scholarships at historically Black colleges and universities. Peyton is a Louisiana boy. I know he’s given to a lot of wonderful causes without publicity, but this was a most pleasant surprise for me.” Another award honors Harold Carmichael, a well-known standout wide receiver from Southern University. The 2020 Pro Football Hall of Famer was a star player at the Baton Rouge HBCU before becoming a Philadelphia Eagles legend. Carmichael told ESPN, “I feel the same as Doug when it comes to what Peyton’s foundation is doing with HBCUs. It’s really an honor to have my name on that scholarship. I go back a long time with Archie, his dad. We played in a Pro Bowl together. I know this is not necessarily an athletic scholarship — HBCUs are much more than that — but when I played at Southern, all I got was $14 a month for laundry and there were times when even that money missed payments. An endowed scholarship with my name attached? I am really humbled and blessed.” Tennessee State received an endowed scholarship in the name of Wilma Rudolph.ÊIn 1960, the notable sprinter became the first woman to win three gold medals in one year at the Olympics. Three other HBCU scholarship endowments went to pillars in the Black community, not known for athletics. Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee has an endowment named afterÊDr. Reavis L. Mitchell Jr.MitchellÊtaught for 40 years as a history professor and is cited in many publications and documentaries for his knowledge of African American heritage.Ê Xavier University of Louisiana’s endowment is named after Norman Francis, the school’s longtime president.Ê Francis received a presidential medal of freedom in 2006 for his efforts in planning the recovery and rebuilding of New Orleans and surrounding areas after Hurricane Katrina. Dillard University, also in New Orleans, has an endowment named after Dr. Michael Lomax, president and CEO of the United Negro College Fund. He has been president since 2004 and is a former university president. When ESPN contacted Manning, he declined to speak about his personal involvement with the scholarships.Ê He did send this statement : “The Peyback Foundation is honored to partner with these six colleges to honor distinguished Alumni and staff members, and to help college students at these schools now and many years to come. Really, for perpetuity.”
