MILAN POLICE CAPTAIN TALKS ABOUT DISCOVERY OF BODY
October 17, 2022 Michael Mills - wbbjtv.com
MILAN, Tenn. — A small town in Gibson County is in shock after the discovery of a body inside a vehicle.
“Right now we do not really know the cause of death. We sent her yesterday for an autopsy, and really, we are just waiting to put some of these pieces to the puzzle together. Until we get the autopsy back, we really won’t know which direction this case is going,” said Chris Vandiver, a captain in the Milan Police Department.
The body was found near apartments on College Street.
Milan police do have some leads they are currently following up on. They are questioning different people that may know something about what had happened.
Milan police are looking for a vehicle which was seen leaving the area around the time of the incident.
“The vehicle may have been there about the time when she had got there. We are just trying to identify whose car it is, who it belongs to, what make and model it is, of course. And then also who were the occupants who may have been in the vehicle. We are just trying to identify that and interview them to see if they are related to the incident,” Vandiver said.
If anyone knows any information, you can contact the Milan Police Department at (731) 686-3309 or the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-TBI-FIND.

Any charity that raises over $50,000 a year must register with the State of Tennessee. To see if a charity is registered, visit sos.tn.gov/charities or call 615-741-2555. Please report any false, misleading or deceptive fundrais ing activity to the Division of Business and Charitable Organizations at 615-741-2555.

Opportunity is Coming
By Don Polley
I attended Blue Oval City: Meet Ford and Blue Oval SK. They had a representative panel on hand to discuss concerns and opportunities for the community, region, and for students that are currently in school. There were business, civic, education, and chamber leaders on hand to listen to what Ford had in mind as Blue Oval City was tabbed by Ford to lead the shift to an electrified America.
I suppose before I elaborate from my point of view I should point to the highlights of the discussion. Ford is investing 5.6 billion dollars in Blue Oval City. Their plan is to implement clean manufacturing, which will translate to 6000 stable jobs. SK, in a joint venture with Ford will be producing and recycling batteries for the three new vehicles to be produced at the site. They will also operate two plants in Kentucky as Ford intends to utilize JIT manufacturing principles.
From a preservationist’s point of view, Ford intends to be carbon neutral and produce zero waste to landfill. In essence, parents and students, this is going to be the big gest change in the automotive industry in 119 years. Mr. Kell, the plant manager, has portrayed this undertaking as being a revolution and not an evolution in automotive manufacturing. For those students in school interested in being a part of a cutting-edge new development, here is your chance to align yourself to opportunity.

Local organization empowers youth to share their talents
October 23, 2022 Diamon O’Daniel - wbbjtv.com
JACKSON, Tenn. — Art is a form of expression and one organization placed a special emphasis on the impact of art through an event called “Jackson’s Artistic Youth.”
The event allowed children of many ages to come and present their chosen art form.
“I am so elated that we are able to provide this service to our community. Because the kids, they need that, that sense. It fosters a sense of self-esteem, growth. And we are just so excited that we are able to do this for them,” said Dr. Mechelle Taylor Moragne, the President of Links Incorporated.
There were performances by vocalists, artists, poets and more.
One participant shares how being able to showcase her talent in an event like this makes her feel.
“It felt good because I like performing in front of peo ple and showing my talent,” said Makiyah Dickerson.
Her sister also performed both as a poet and a host in the role of mistress of the ceremony.
“I would like to continue doing this on, like doing this I can be somebody,” said Zaniyah Parker.
Providing this opportunity to the youth of this commu nity allowed participates, like these sisters, to leave with a gift of inclusion, importance, and value.
“I performed a poem by ‘Still I Rise’ by Maya Ange lou.” Dickerson said. “I picked it because every time I feel down I can say that poem and it makes me like feel good and ‘I rise.’”
This event was designed to highlight the yout, but it impacted everyone involved.
Links Incorporated also showcases events and services to help other members in the community as well.
“We impact the entire family, so you know, we provide services for the children and then we, you know, on up to the elderly in our community. We want to be a service for all mankind, ” Moragne said.
This is the first in-person program since COVID-19. The organization plans to continue to host more events engaging the community.
WINTER SURVIVAL OF PLANTS
As the season changes from fall into winter we also have to care for our plants in order for them to survive the cold weather.
Plants are lost because of improper care just before the season changes.
It only takes a few steps to save plants and keep them growing all through the winter season. Even plants not native to West Tennessee can thrive if they are brought inside from the harsh weather before a direct frost. Even just taking steps as covering outside plants with sheets before a frost will preserve them longer.
Lemon and orange trees can do well in our area if they get good indoor sunlight combined with good care when outside.
Banana trees have always been popular but need the proper amount of shade and sunshine in order to last. They are usually too large to transport inside but can make it through the winter once it becomes mature.
Good soil is a must along with regular watering to get good drainage to the roots because the root system is the lifeline of plants.
Get out there and bring those flowers and plants in so you can get the benefits of having the good old outdoors of West Tennessee indoors during winter.

Opportunity is Coming -- Cont’d from
For other students that may be looking to make a living wage and earn a decent living without going to school for six to eight years to obtain a degree, here is your opportuni ty. Look for Ford to invest in TCAT’s that will groom their workforce to meet the needs provided by such a tremendous investment. It was indicated that there would be a TCAT built at Blue Oval City to meet the needs at Blue Oval and promote a manufacturing point of view so that they can build a workforce that will be committed to success. They want employees willing to be resilient and embrace the challenges that lie ahead and stay with the company for the benefits and the satisfaction of building from the ground up to the consumer.
Why Pick West Tennessee?
The panel responded to the question as to why West Tennessee was with a variety of reasons. Physicals such as rail, interstate system, and infrastructure. The other factors included tax rates, a good TCAT network already in place, a workforce and trust in the communities. Ford plans to produce the Ford Lightning pickup truck, the Ford E-Tran sit van, and the Mustang Mach-E. Andy Bianco was a part of the team in Jackson this week and he was a former schoolteacher in Ohio. He is responsible for workforce devel opment and training centered on trying to get local people to get involved with K-12, HBCU, University, Community Colleges and TCAT.
Ford desires to employ a local and diverse workforce including women and minori ties. Vanessa Presson, SK’s HR Manager, is a UTM graduate along with Westar and was formerly with Tyson. It always helps to have familiarity with your base in the workforce. She has also been a single parent and will be working to alleviate barriers of childcare and transportation solutions. Students, the opportunity is there if you have the dedication, belief in yourself, and perseverance to pursue it. It will not be handed to you, but if you are willing to make a difference, then be the difference you are trying to make. Personally, I dreamed of having such an opportunity when I graduated high school, so by all means please show me what I missed! I will be in your corner all along the way cheering you on. Just look at the gentleman in the picture with the Lightning, he is ready to get one for himself.

BIKING THE BLUES HIGHWAY
By Wendy Isom Mercer
So, a pretty amazing thing happened on my lunch break at Woodstock Bakeshop last week. I met a group of very friendly Harley-Davidson motorcycle enthusiasts from Italy!
I asked what brought them to Jackson and they said they make an annual trip to ride on the U.S. Highway of the Blues.
They start in Chicago. They made a stop in Jackson after their ride in Memphis. Next, they are headed to New Orle ans. I told them that Milwaukee, the home of Harley-Davidson, is my hometown.
I also admitted that I’d never taken a ride on a Harley-Davidson.
No, I didn’t take a ride at lunch, but they did invite me to pick out one Harley that I wanted to try. So, I chose to take a seat on the Harley that was mauve in col or. That’s the closest to my favorite color: purple. Plus, it matched my purse!
So, here I am on a Harley Street Glide with my newest friends from Italy!

Jackson Academic STEAM Academy expands historic partnership with Union
First virtual school to offer dual enrollment opportunities through Union University
JACKSON, Tenn. – Jackson-Madison County Schools and Union University have an nounced an exciting new partnership between Union and the JMCSS K-12 CyberSchool Jackson Academic STEAM Academy (JASA). JASA is the first virtual school to partner with Union University in a dual enrollment program.
“Students at JASA can take classes at Union, be involved as students at Union, and expand their horizons and future aspirations,” Union University President Dr. Dub Oliver said.
JASA senior Isaiah Hodges is among the students taking advantage of this new part nership in conjunction with the Tennessee Dual Enrollment Grant.
“Mr. Robbie Graves with Union’s Undergraduate Admissions team made the progress easy and the faculty has welcomed us as if we were family. The students on campus are respectful and humble,” Hodges said.
In addition to upper-level English, Math and Science classes, JASA students have access to University services like academic advising, support services, supplemental college freshmen workshops and more.
“The sky’s the limit for JASA students because of our Superintendent Dr. Marlon King and through the support provided by Union University. From our building, to our teacher preparation program, to now dual enrollment. This partnership will ignite inno vation for our students,” JASA Head of School Dr. Josie Currie said.
Families interested in joining JASA for the spring semester are encouraged to contact Dr. Currie at 731-506-2610 or via email jzcurrie@jmcss.org
“Students will receive support not only from their high school, but also from a number of first year student aids offered by the University. It’s a unique opportunity,” Dr. Currie said.

GRIOT COLLECTIVE HOST GROUNDBREAKING LITERARY CONFERENCE
By Bill MarableCSENewsNow.com
A creative writing work shop and panel discussion on Black Southern Writers highlighted an historic literary weekend in the Hub City.
The Griot Collective of West Tennessee spearhead ed the event which was held on the University of Memphis Lambuth Cam pus last Saturday.
“Black Southern Writers and the American Experi ment was a major literary event the likes of which the City of Jackson has never seen before,” said Griot president James E Cherry. “The program was a blueprint of what a liter ary festival could look like in the Hub City that would
attract both a regional and national audience.”
Jeanie Thompson (pic tured above) conducted the Creative Writing Workshop for middle and high school teachers. The founding Executive Director of the
Alabama Writers’ Forum, Thompson is an advocate for creative writing to be included in the K-12 curriculum in English, language arts, or reading in all public schools.
“‘Writing Our Stories’
and it’s predecessor, ‘The Language of Objects’the curriculum used by Thompson - has lessons that “help young writers visualize how to connect abstract fellings or emo tions to concrete, everyday objects,” said Thompson.
About a dozen local educators attended the workshop, including subsitute teacher, Don Polley. “I am glad I had
the opportunity to attend this workshop,” said Pol ley who is currently on the substitute teacher roster in the Gibson County School System. “The information provided here today was invaluable and a great asset to bring back to the classroom.”
Following the workshop and a brief lunch break, several dozen sepcta tors gathered inside the Jack Morris Ballroom to hear readings from a disginuished lineup of authors.
Kelli Norman Ellis, Juyanne James, Anthony Grooms, Randall Horton and Caroline Randall Williams all read excerts from either poetry or fiction, invoking applause at the completion of each
presentation.
Caroline Randall Williams is an American author, poet and academic best known for the 2015 cookbook Soul Food Love, co-written with her mother, the author Alice Randall, and published by Random House.
“What I’m about to do is envoke color against a sharp, white background,” said Randall Willams as she prepared to read from her debut book of poetry, Lucy Negro, Redux which was published in 2015 by Ampersand Books.
A panel discussion on the important role Black souther writers’ have had in the overall literary movement. It was moder ated by Cherry.

“The writer’s assembled here today are bring their fresh vision, new images, new interpretations to what it means to be Black, southern and to be a writer here in this place we call America,” said Cherry upon introducing the panel.
One topic disucssed by the panel was the question of “What distinguishes just regu lar southern storytelling from Black southern storytelling.
“When I’m writing and thinking about the black experience, I bring in all the little idosycocies - vernacular, dialect, satire,” said Horton.
Dr. Randall Horton is cur rently the only tenured Full Professor in the United States of America at a university or college with seven felony convictions. He is a member of the experimental performance group Heroes Are Gang Leaders which recently received the 2018 American Book Award in Oral Literature and their latest musical project, The Baraka Sessions, was named best vocal jazz album by NPR in 20129.
Although Cherry was appreciative of the 50 for more in attendance, he was dis appointed the room was not at capacity for such and groundbreaking and insightful program. “Black folk have already proven that we can dominate the athletic and enter tainment arena. But that’s not all we can do. We are equally adept at intellectual, artistic and academic pursuits as well. Until we grasp that reality, we will always succumb to stereotypes others have created for us or become mere caricatures of ourselves.”

Poetic Expressions
To be a mother in this economy
by Erin Hoover
My child babies a squeeze bottle of craft glue or a lipstick tube filched from my purse. She yanks a tissue from our coffee table and spreads it out in the air, covers the baby, then balls up a second tissue to fluff under its pretend head. They’re all over the carpet, babies. I want to help, but she motions me to go, shushes me. I find them everywhere, rock baby, Matchbox baby, soapy baby
barrel of blow-bubbles. Sometimes she’ll let me tuck her babies into our bed, where they slumber alongside us, when I can,
when I’m with her. But I’m not always home, department store suit creased into my luggage, phone jacked into an airport
wall, all those hotel stays hopeful for the job on the horizon, my baby in the care of a friend. Sometimes the job came and we moved, and my child learned to make friends and lose them, to shape her body to different earth for a time, then say goodbye. I’m with her now, I’m here, but I wonder if my absence lives inside her, if the babies are about that, they are everything to her, these beloveds, until she walks away.
