MURDER SUSPECT CAUGHT BY US MARSHALS, JACKSON PD IN ABANDONED BUILDING
MILAN – A joint investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Gibson County Sheriff’s Office has resulted in the indictment of a man on charges connected to a double homicide. At the request of 28th District Attorney General Frederick Agee, on August 23rd, TBI special agents joined investigators with the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office in investigating a double homicide at a home in the 100 block of Wilbur Nelson Road in Milan. Marcus Smith (DOB: 5/16/00), of Humboldt, and Diamond Love (DOB: 3/28/01), who lived at the residence, were found deceased inside the home. During the investigation, agents and investigators developed information that identified Love’s former boyfriend, Frederick Yates Jr. (DOB: 7/5/01), as the individual responsible for the fatal shootings. On October 15th, the Gibson County Grand Jury returned indictments charging Yates with two counts of First Degree Murder, one count of Especially Aggravated Burglary, and one count of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Dangerous Felony. On October 24th, Yates, who is currently in the Dyer County Jail, was served with the arrest warrants. Yates remains jailed in Dyer County without bond.
October 20, 2021 Shannon McFarlin www.radionwtn.com/ United States Marshal Tyreece Miller announces the arrest of Randall Lee Rose, 58, for first degree murder by the U.S. Marshals Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force and the Jackson Police Department. On Sept. 27, 2021, Randall Lee Rose allegedly killed Mary Kelly at 2051 Hollywood Drive and fled on foot before law enforcement arrived on scene. A convicted sex offender, Rose cut off an ankle monitor that night, and it was discovered on railroad tracks near the scene. JPD issued a warrant for Rose for First Degree Murder. This case was adopted by the U.S. Marshals Task Force. In the weeks following the murder, Marshals cleared numerous buildings on and near the Hollywood Drive area. Cont’d Page 4

MOLES AND VOLES
West Tennessee
Recently we talked about how armyworms had marched all across West Tennessee destroying OUTDOORS with Ray Jones beautiful lawns and now we have to deal with moles and voles. It seems as though when one Send photos to: invasive critter leaves another one takes its’ place. numberonecoach@hotmail.com Nothing is worst than to seen a beautiful lawn with mole trails all over the yard. They are diffior 731-694-8614 cult to run down unless you get lucky and see the trench moving. Ironically moles (M) are meat eaters and voles (V) are vegetarians. Moles dine off insects, grubs and earthworms while voles eat plant roots and steams. Moles are 4-7 inches long with paddle-shaped feet and prominent digging claws. Voles are somewhat smaller and less massive in nature. When you see them starting to invade try to get a head start because they like armyworms will make your lawn look like a garden tiller has plowed up your yard. Good luck and keep your eyes open for moving trenches. PHOTO IS A CAPTURED MOLE.

MURDER SUSPECT CAUGHT Cont’d from page 1 On Oct. 20, 2021, Task Force Investigators received information that Rose was hiding out at one of the many buildings located on the former Bruce Hardwood Flooring Company on Williams Street. At approximately 8:45 a.m. today, U.S. Marshals and members of the JPD Special Operations and Criminal Investigation Divisions, along with air support from JPD’s helicopter, surrounded a small office building located in the middle of the property and apprehended Rose without incident. Rose was in possession of a handgun believed to be taken during a recent burglary. “Teamwork between the U.S. Marshals Service and the Jackson Police Department was really key in leading to the capture of Randall Rose,” said U.S. Marshal Tyreece Miller. “Hopefully, the community can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that he is in custody.”

‘SHOOTING’ WAS JUSTIFIED
Cont’d from page 1 According to Alwahany, the alleged victim was destroying his establishment and threatened his safety. “He tried to purchase several items and when it came time to pay, he only had eighty-four cents on his card. He had over $27 worth of merchandise on the counter and he thought I was just going to give it to him,” said Alwahany. “I asked him to leave the store and that’s when he began to throw things and tare down things.” ‘Mike’ as he is called by those who frequent his establishment located on the corner of South 17th Avenue and McKnight Street, said he tries to get along with all of his customers. And it was his compassion that moved him to allow the alleged victim in the store. “I try to get along with everybody. I had a restraining order placed on him seven months ago and in spite of that, I allowed him to come back into the store because his mother called and said she needed him to do some shopping for her,” said Mike. Alwahany says he has video tape footage of the incident and has presented it to his attorney. “The tape will prove that he threatened me several times,” said Alwahany. It was reported that Alwahany and the alleged victim were involved in a verbal altercation which led to the police being called out to the South Side Deli after a report that someone had been shot. Alwahany says although he did fire his weapon, he did not shoot anyone. “He (the ‘victim’) was bleeding, but it wasn’t from a bullet wound. I shot the glass and he cut himself going out of the door,” said Mike. Police say that when officers arrived, they found a 31-year-old man with non-life-threatening wounds. They say he was taken to a local hospital. “I feel like I was the victim” said Alwahany. The police treated me like I was the criminal.” Alwahany, who was charged with attempted first-degree murder, reckless endangerment, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony, says he vows to fight the charges. “There were two witnesses in the store at the time and their testimony along with the video will prove that I was justified in my actions,” said Mike. “As for now, I will continue to operate my business and wait for my day in court.”

A Tennessee physician was sentenced today in the Western District of Tennessee to 20 years in prison for his unlawful prescribing of opioids that caused the death of one of his patients. According to court documents, Thomas K. Ballard III, 63, of Jackson, a medical doctor, owned and operated the Ballard Clinic, where he prescribed controlled substances outside the scope of professional practice and not for a legitimate medical purpose. Among other things, Ballard engaged in inappropriate sexual contact with several female patients while he ignored red flags that they were abusing the medications he prescribed.

And Your Point is . . .
After The Fall Break
I decided for a variety of reasons, that I may need to change course after fall break at JMCSS. Having been a part of the academic efforts at Liberty Tech HS, I wanted to take a second look at the contrast from where I had come from at Gibson County Special School District. I have truly enjoyed working with the students that were focused on their future and investing in themselves while obtaining an education at Liberty. I received tremendous support from faculty and administrators in fulfilling my duties, as they were aware I always kept the needs of the students at the forefront in all of my efforts. I look forward to getting the opportunity to contribute once again in the future, but that will be in the Spring of 2022. I will be anxious to see how the code of conduct will impact what takes place in the classroom. I have been well received at GCSSD and currently am subbing at Gibson County High School in Dyer, Tennessee. They are a Level 5 school focused on high quality instructional material and have little to no problem with conduct issues. I subbed in GCSSD in the fall of 2020 and their students were on campus at the beginning of the school year. I can definitely see a difference in the freshman class as they apply themselves to expectations; having been taught to do so in middle school. In contrast many of the freshman at Liberty seemed to have learned two things; how to say I want and I won’t. In Gibson County they have learned that if they give respect, they will get respect and support in their academic efforts. Cell phones are not a problem as students are in school to be educated and not entertained. They understand the value of staying on task enabling them to earn the grade they receive.
INVEST IN YOUR FUTURE
Students the time you spend learning how to learn will pay dividends as you move throughout your life. I have told students that life looks much different at 18 than it does at 21. You cannot apply knowledge that you have not learned and don’t expect Tik-Toc to be much help in advancing your career. Just as an example I have one student that could have gone to Madison Academic, but chose to go to GCSSD because it was easier. I have been teaching computer applications and on an editing assignment; students had a problem with the word to be inserted into the text. As it turned out some could not read cursive writing, I was happy to help and glad I went to school in a different era. Technology is here to stay and will be even more prevalent post-pandemic. Learn how to learn as our world changes every day. “It is your responsibility as to what you give to this world. It is not your responsibility as to what people take from you from this world.” “We are here to serve; serve those who want what you have. Serve those that have what you want.” “And don’t worry about those that don’t, just be faithful to those that do and to yourself.” ~Mark Septhon (Author and Motivational Speaker) Don Polley | Education contributor (Contact don@donpolley.com)

The one-hour meeting – arranged by Shelby County Schools Supt. Joris Ray – unfolded in his conference room on Tuesday. Both families had lost loved ones to gun violence, Ray shared during a virtual media gathering late Wednesday afternoon. “Between both sets of parents, they’ve lost over five to six family members over gun violence. This is a community-wide issue…” With 100-plus children treated for gunshot wounds at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital alone, according to chief medical officer Barry Gilmore, the scope of the problem is nerve racking. Seemingly at issue now is whether the life-threatening encounter in a stairwell at the school has touched Memphis’ collective nerve deep enough to stimulate and sustain the effort needed to solve the problem. “Let’s remember that there is nothing normal about a 13-year-old child shooting another child,” Tennessee State Rep. Antonio Parkinson said shortly after the incident. “Somewhere in the child’s life, we, as a society missed them, the warning signs and the opportunity for intervention… We have to do better as a society to find ways to positively impact the lives of our children before the roots of violence begins to produce fruit.” Similarly, sobering assessments have been shared by myriad people in varying ways over the last week. Meanwhile, the child who pulled the trigger awaits a juvenile court hearing. The child shot is back at Cummings. “Of course, that is a personal issue between the father and the son,” said Ray, who is a father. “It was very important that when the father connected with the other parent to make that decision, he just wanted to see that whatever happened, was it over… “The father felt that it was safe for his child to return to school. He felt that things happen but for the most part he felt very resolved in his decision to send his child back to school and we supported that decision.” All options were on the table, said Ray. “The student requested and asked to return back to Cummings. We support that decision.” Emphasizing that as superintendent both teens were “his children,” Ray arranged the meeting buoyed by “a strong message of reconciliation and not retaliation” by the shooting-victim’s father. Poetic Expressions MARCELL RETIRES 31 Days
of
Mrs. Marie Marcell began working for Burger King in 1984 and after 37 long years of employment she has decided to retire. She was a very dedicated, sweet, loving, and hard working employee. She will be so dearly missed. Danyelle Gray and the staff had an appreciation dinner waiting for her when she came to work her last day on October 15, 2021. Mrs. Marie and her husband had a very good time. Food, Fun, and Laughter and of course there were tears. Mrs. Marie you are loved by so many.

In the Hospital When they came at me with sharp knives I put perfume under my nose . When they knocked me out on the operating table I dreamed was flying. When they asked me embarrassing questions I remembered the clouds in the sky. When they were about to drown me I floated . When they laid harsh hands on me I thought of fireworks I had seen with you. When they told me I was sick and might die I left them and went away with you To where I live When they took off my right breast I gave it to them.
