LANE COLLEGE FOOTBALL TEAM “YOU DID IT”!
I traveled to Nashville for the big football game just like most of the TSU and Lane College Alumni from around West Tennessee. Lane College represented West Tennessee in a big way and I along with other TSU alumni are proud of the great job Lane College did in defeating TSU in over time.
West Tennessee OUTDOORS with Ray Jones
Send photos to: numberonecoach@hotmail.com or 731-694-8614
The team played with class and pride that anyone would be proud of to be associated with the program. They were clearly more prepared for the contest and it showed all the way throughout the ball game.
The atmosphere was festive as some Lane College alumni were sitting in front of me who happened to be friends of Alvino Douglas and he was sitting behind me. Each time big plays happened it was Al joshing him for TSU and the Lane alumni joshing back.
It was so much fun and this game was well worth attending with the bands showcasing their talents both on the field and in the stands.
TSU and Lane Alumni did outstanding in representing how important it is too support the institutions when football games are played and West Tennessee did just that. Michael Carney traveled from Minnesota to support Lane College just as many other alumni came from far off places because of their love for the college.
Lane College you did it well.

Gregory Hammond --
Time only moves backwards on clocks. We don’t get time back in this life, so it’s important to cherish every moment and every interaction we have with our family, friends, and fellow man. The America James Wolfe grew up in was different than the one I grew up in. But it didn’t make him bitter or selfish. It made him hungry. Anytime he found a passion, he went all in, and he was intentional about reaching back to help other people in the process. His work in business and public service made him a role model for many. His love for people made him a broth er to anyone who had the pleasure of crossing his path.
#BigBrotherWolfe
Along with Lane College, Jackson State, and his former colleagues, our community gave Big Brother Wolfe his flowers while he was still alive as we celebrated him through this documentary. It is my hope that young peo ple, of all ages, are inspired to push themselves to achieve more and love their neighbor in the process. That’s what Wolfe was all about.
#RIP #BigBrotherWolfe
ROBERT MITCHELL, III “COWBOY”
Today is a very sad day for me my family, friends, coworkers etc. I have been with Wolfe since I was 16 years old and last month I turned 61 that’s all my life. Everyone knows Mr. Wolfe was my Godfather, my brother, my Boss, my D.J. Partner, my mentor, etc. He made me the monster I am today -as far as on the radio- he also gave ever D.J. In this city a chance. I can go on and on but Facebook is not the time are the place so I rest my case and will say this , he never got all he deserves from this city. I will continue to do what he made me to do as long as my # 1 father the good lord keeps me going That’s Radio RIP Mr. Wolfe BKA SuperWolfe you will be missed And you can B.E. T. on That!

Jackson Pride event announces new location
BY DAVID THOMAS
SEPTEMBER 27, 2022
From Darren Lykes Facebook Page –Jackson, Tennessee
– The Jackson Pride committee is pleased to announce a new lo cation for its upcoming event.
The 3rd Annual Jackson Pride scheduled for Saturday, October 8, 2022 will now take place at the Carl Perkins Civic Center.
The decision to move Jackson Pride eliminates the potential for rain delays and/or postponement which has impacted the event in years past.
The new location will also allow vendors additional setup time. Darren Lykes, Jackson Pride Board Member and event Chair says, “The new venue offers many advantag es and we are grateful to the City of Jackson for helping to make this possible.”
Jackson Pride will begin at 11 a.m. and include activi ties for all ages including musical performances by Avon Park, Emily McGill, Herz, Hunter Cross, Will Burton and entertainment from DJ G Billa Productions. Exhibit booths from various vendors and food trucks will also be part of the festivities.
The day will conclude with a family-friendly Drag Show, featuring some of the regions most talented per formers. A one-dollar donation is requested for admission to the event.
The purpose of Jackson Pride is to create a more di verse and inclusive atmosphere in Jackson, Tenn.
“This event aims to bring the LGBTQIA+ population together, including communities within this community. Funds raised at the Jackson Pride Event will allow us to continue to expand and grow our mission of supporting diversity through awareness,” says Lykes. Approximately 1,000 attendees attended last year’s Jackson Pride event. “We are thankful to all of the sponsors and volunteers who, without their support, we would not be able to make the event possible”, says Lykes.

DRAGONS DOWN TSU IN OVERTIME
by Joel Worthington -golc dragons.com
NASHVILLE, Tenn. | In what can only be defined as a program-defining win, the Lane College Dragons defeat ed the Tennessee State Tigers in overtime on Saturday in the 23rd annual John Merritt Classic.
It was the 10th all-time meeting with TSU and the first win for Lane in the series.
Jeffrey Johnson opened the scoring in the first quarter after linebacker Tyshun Gaiter stripped a Tigers ball carrier and Johnson scooped the fum ble and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown.
The hosts then put together two scoring drives capped by a 31-yard touchdown run from quarterback Chayil Gar nett and then a 35-yard field goal to go up 10-6.
TSU was driving for a po tential third score as the first half was winding down when Nijul Canada undercut an out route and picked off Garnett and returned it 57 yards for a touchdown and a halftime lead for the Dragons. The Tigers then took the opening drive of the second half 66 yards in seven plays for a touchdown to regain the lead.
After the teams swapped punts, Lane quarterback Tarik McKinzie led the Dragons offense on a scoring drive that covered 75 yards in just six plays capped off by a 13-yard touchdown pass to running back Ike Brown. The drive was highlighted by a 3rd and 12 play deep in the Lane side of the field when McKinzie dropped back and hit Brown on a 52-yard dart to pick up the first down and move the Dragons offense into TSU territory. The score remained 20-17 until the Tigers took over for their final drive of the game with 1:58 left to go. TSU took advantage of good field position, moving the ball just 25 yards before facing a 4th down from the Lane 34-yard line. Kicker Kaleb Mosley drilled a game-tying field goal from 51 yards out to send the game to overtime.
TSU won the toss and elected to go on offense to begin overtime. The Tigers scored on a 2-yard run from Edwin Rhodes and the extra point made it 27-20.
Facing 3rd and 4 in their turn with the ball, McKinzie found Jacquez Jones on the left side who took it eight yards for a first down. Brown rushed left on the next play and went 11 yards for a touchdown to make the game 27-26.
Head Coach Vyron Brown then decided the game would be won or lost on the fol lowing play, electing to go for two. The decision paid off as Brown powered behind his offensive line into the end zone to give Lane a 28-27 victory.
Ike Brown finished with 137 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns.
Johnson led the defense with 10 tackles and 1.0 tackles for loss. Mackenzie Howard added nine tackles and Canada had six tackles and 2.0 tackles for loss.
The Dragons will be home next Saturday, October 8th, when they play Kentucky State for homecoming. The game will be played at Liberty Tech and kickoff is sched uled for 2:00 PM. The game will be aired on ESPN+.

Kellum’s Finish Fourth in Mini Marathon
By Tricia Kellum
After a good two year stint we returned to the half marathon arena (Eric EK said let’s ease back, not yet on a marathon) with Greenway Half.
It was a familiar route. We’ve walked it on Satur day’s and Sunday’s. I hadn’t heard of this race until a few days ago but it’s been an annual event for many years. We saw tags from Georgia to California so it’s well known.
Thank goodness there was a wide range of age representation although I’d like to see many more people of color participating too.
By God’s Grace Erric and I both placed 4th in our category with times of 2:09 and 2:45 respectively. The route gave some good challenges with inclines and even a gravel trail… My ankles held up nicely thanks to outdoor training and the compassionate people at Hughston clinic @hughston clinic & Graceful Hands @gracefulhandschiro. I’m now a year out of ankle surgery and finished 13.1 miles in just over 2 hours! God is so Good even if we’re sometimes not.
Thanks for generous folks handing out water and those who set up that snack table… the bananas, pretzels, and candy hit the spot!
It’s been an exciting start to a new week and month. #gratefulheart

HALIBURTON HIRED AS DIRECTOR OF DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION
DMC Expands Staff and Focus to Further Award-Winning DEI Strategy International Award, Additional Program Scope, and New Hire all Support Progress
The Downtown Memphis Commission (DMC) was awarded the International Down town Association’s (IDA) Pinnacle Award* at the September 2022 IDA conference in Vancouver. The industry’s highest recognition, the Pinnacle Award, represents the most inspiring innovations in urban place management.
Each year, the IDA recognizes outstanding projects as winners of the Downtown Achievement Awards, which identify advances to urban centers by organizations worldwide. This year’s projects were awarded by a jury of IDA members in the fol lowing categories: leadership development; organizational management; economic development; marketing, communication and events; planning, design and infrastruc ture; policy and advocacy; and public space management and operations. The DMC’s award-winning effortshighlighted the organization’s policy and advocacy work in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) realm, with the Building Downtown DEI Toolkit, designed to increase MWBE and emerging developer participation in the development of Downtown Memphis.
“The Downtown Memphis Commission’s innovative work received the IDA Pinnacle Award for setting the new standard for improving cities around the world,” said David Downey, IDA President and CEO. “The DMC’s DEI Toolkit has made an impact on its community and the people who live, work and play there, and is evidence of the contin ued commitment to champion livable, vital and thriving urban centers.”
In addition to the IDA-recognized work, the DMC will take on a growing role in the emerging developer landscape, beginning fall 2022. The DMC will be the new home to multiple programspreviously managed by Urban Land Institute (ULI) and Region Smart. Under the DMC’s umbrella, these programs will continue to support greater equity in the overall development momentum in Downtown.
“The DMC has a history of advocacy for emerging developers,” stated Paul Young, DMC President. “We believe that pulling these programs together under one roof will strengthen the programs and lead to a stronger, more connected, development commu nity.”
The programs include the Real Estate Diversity Initiative (REDI) program, Devel op-A-Thon, and other locally-focused workshops and classes designed to prepare individuals for careers in commercial development.
“DEI doesn’t happen by accident,” said Brett Roler, DMC SVP Planning & Devel opment. “The DMC already has a robust toolkit designed to support a wide range of projects and emerging developers. Through the addition of this new emerging developer programming, we expect to redouble our efforts to continue growing the ecosystem of small developers taking on the challenging work of building up the core city.”
To ensure the success of these programs and the ongoing DEI work, the DMC has recently hired Tori Haliburton as Director of DEI. Haliburton graduated from Lane College, a small Christian HBCU in West Tennessee, and received her Master of Public Administration from Villanova University.
Before joining the DMC, Haliburton served as Director of Grants and Funding Opportunities at Christ Community Health Services, and in various positions with increasing responsibilities at Wiley College and Lane College. Haliburton has extensive community engagement, project management, and team-building experience. She was named as the 2016 WestStar African American Leadership Emerging Leader and was selected by the Jackson Chamber of Commerce as Forty under 40. She has served as a softball, cheerlead ing, and pageant coach; and AKA sorority advisor. Her current favorite coaching/advising role is in support of her college-aged son’s pursuits at her alma mater, Lane College. *The DMC has received the Pinnacle award twice in three years, the first for the Open on Main program in 2020.
