As far back as she can remember, LaTonya Rich ardson has wanted to be a writer. Her start came in Mrs. Edith Lambert’s sixth-grade class when she won a district-wide writing contest. Thanks to her mom, she still has that essay. During high school, she had her sights on writing for Hallmark greeting cards.

By Emil GuillermoIn communities of col or, athletes in the U.S. are practically royalty. They don’t call Lebron “King James” for nothing. Star athletes can do no wrong. Until they do.
Just ask O.J.
But when athletes steer clear of any of that, generally they are treated like gods who live above the rim. After all, they are our heroes because they’re winners. They may have started out regular, like the rest of us, but their god-given talents have made them rise above it all.
And that makes it difficult when they start to behave like mere mortals who do some pretty regrettable things. Just look at Herschel Walker or Draymond Green.
Let’s take Walker first. If you’re a Bay Area guy like me, Georgia’s Walker is not the greatest running back ever. Give me Marcus Allen. Or even Texas’ Earl Camp bell. Both of them would rather run over linebackers, not Democrats.
Walker is different. We know that Walker denies giving money to pay for a former partner’s abortion. But now the same female partner claims Walker wanted her to have a second abortion, though she declined and had the child.
Mind you, I’m choosing to skip all the accusations about Walker’s general hypocrisy from his son, Chris tian. It’s important, but I’ll give Walker the benefit of the doubt considering his grandstanding son.

This is the most exciting time of the year for nimrods along with their trusty four legged friends. Yes, the dogs get excited also because their instinct tells them what is about to occur.
After a long off season, which last eight months, hound dogs know when it’s time to play the game. It is a mutual agreement between man and dog that they get to do what they are born to do and love it more than anything.
However, as much as the hounds love the woods, the hunter loves it even more or he would not be out there.
Each year when hunting season first starts it’s like a getting a brand new car or some excitement that can’t be matched.
You will start seeing lot’s of orange hats and clothing going down the streets being worn by anxious people headed to their hunting grounds.
Almost all game hunting Big and Small has opened or will start soon in West Tennessee. For some it is a brand new hunting gun, for some it is a new dog, for some it is a new hunting spot, for some it is a new ATV, for some it is a new pair of boots and it goes on and on.
But one thing they all have in common is the love of the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee and the start of hunting season.

Conner Real Estate, Simmons Bank and Wallace Cunningham of the Bank of England partnered with the Jackson Madison County NAACP Branch Saturday for a “Homebuyer and Community Initiative Seminar.
The seminar was held at the branch offices of the NAACP in Jackson. This seminar provided information for the community to better understand the “home buying process as presented by Conner Real Estate. According to Mr Wallace Cunningham, there are three components needed to purchase a home: Credit , Assets & Property.
You need to fully understand your credit history, obtain your credit report, and know your current credit score.
Your financial accounts such as a checking account, gifts, and avail today being able to provide a down payment or apply for assistance in one of the housing assistance programs. Examples are the Federal Home Loan Bank or the Tennessee Housing Development Agency.
Such programs offer: Conventional loans - Need 5% down payment - FHA loans - need 3.5% down payment - USDA/ Rural Development 100% financing - A - 100% financing for qualified veterans Simmons Bank offers the following 100% affordable advantage loan programs: 620 credit score - 43% debt ratio
-No PMI Insurance - 6.25% current rate - Sellers concessions allowed up to 6% - Income limits - Must be in eligible areas - Primary residence
Here are some brief suggestions when deciding to qualify and preparing to purchase your home, and find the right home for you.
Find a realtor to represent you. Remember the realtor for both buyer and seller are paid by the seller not the buyer. Where is the property located?
Acquire a home inspection from the borrower. Get an appraisal done to ensure the value of the home. The reasons to have a Professional Realtor are: Representation; Helps locate the house that you are seeking; Handles negotiations of the contract between the buyer and seller; Walks you through the process, inspection and appraisal; Makes sure you are not overpaying for the home; Works with your lender to get you to the closing table; The Underwriter will analyze all the information in your file for final approval using these three components.
Credit, Assets, Property Closing is the final piece of the process. This is where the homeownership dream is finalized.
The mortgage loan doc uments are signed, seller executes the deed to the property, funds are collected and disbursed.
Anyone needing further information on the homebuyer process can contact Darnessa Taylor at Simmons Bank at 731-695-6566 or Wallace Cunningham at 731-4202334 at the Bank of England. Or you may have your own Professional Realtor you know and have experience with.

But the woman who claims Walker has consulted her on abor tion isn’t grandstanding. She’s provided proof to the news site, the Daily Beast, and appears credible.
All this shouldn’t even be political talk, but Walker is running as an anti-abortion, pro-life fundamentalist.
The truth is relevant if it makes Walker out to be a liar.
But maybe that’s good for a politician?
Coming to Walker’s defense is no less than Donald Trump, who told the NY Times’ Maggie Haberman about Walker’s abundant qualities.
“He was the best football player in the nation by far,” Trump said of Walker.
When asked about his “complicated personal history,” Trump was quick to dismiss any criticism.
“Ten years ago would be a problem, twenty years ago a bigger problem. I don’t think it’s a problem today,” Trump said.
Haberman asked “why?” Because the world is changing.
In other words, outright liars are rewarded in today’s corrupt Republican politics led by Godfather Trump. Anything goes, as long as you win.
Trump’s blessing has opened the way for millions in political contributions and support from conservatives who shamelessly back the unqualified and truth-compromised Walker.
But this is the kind of Black man Republicans want. Control lable. Who will do what they want. Run over Democrats with political athleticism!
Doesn’t seem to stack up against the incumbent Senator, Rev. Raphael Warnock, a Democrat and the current preacher of MLK’s Ebenezer Baptist church.
If Walker wins, we will feel the impact in California. Dem
ocrats can rely on Kamala Harris to break a tie on upcoming legislation on key issues like gun control, immigration, voting rights, LGBTQ rights. Oh, and there’s abortion.
But there will be no hero ics from Harris if Republi cans gain the majority and have Herschel Walker (L) in their pocket.
He will do anything they say. He’s their star athlete. He can do no wrong.
At Least Draymond Green Doesn’t Want to Be Senator
Draymond Green says he’s going to take some time away from the Golden State Warriors. He’s already taken some of their credibility.
Of course, you’ve seen the video of Green punching his team mate Jordan Poole at a recent Warriors practice. The Warriors are mostly upset that video of the punch found its way to the public.
But at least we got the truth. The punch was a clear battery, and chargeable. The Warriors preferred to keep it in house. Keep it in house? That sounds like Jeffrey Dahmer.
The video shows undeniable workplace violence. Green, who is 6-ft-6-inches, 230 pounds, is punching the smaller Poole, who is two inches shorter and almost 40 pounds lighter.
Sports commentators downplay the punch, saying these are men playing an aggressive game, and it’s to be expected.
Not when the gym is your workplace. Punch your boss and you’ll get fired. Or sued. Is this the NBA’s message, that physi cal bullying is OK?
Two weeks ago, the NBA fined Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver $10 million and banned him from the game for one year for “workplace misconduct,” involving anti-Black racism, as well as misogynistic and sexual comments.
Is that worse than punching a teammate in practice?
Green has apologized and said he’s going to take time to “work on himself.”
But it’s going to take a lot more than using that meditation app LeBron James pushes.
For the NBA and the Golden State Warriors, the action that must be taken is clear. They must condemn workplace violence by athletes unequivocally.
Athletes shouldn’t be treated as winners when they act like losers.

October 31, 2022 - MEM PHIS – A former caregiver accused of falsely charging TennCare for services she did not provide has been arrested following an investigation by special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investiga tion’s Medicaid Fraud Control Division.
In June, after receiving information from the Division of TennCare’s Office of Program Integrity, TBI agents began an investigation into fraudulent time sheets sub mitted for in-home care services for a TennCare recipient. During the investigation, it was determined that Anjelli ca Dennis (pictured above) was the person responsible for submitting the time sheets. Between July 2020 and August 2021, on numerous occasions, it was determined Dennis submitted claims that she provided in-home care when her client was hospitalized and after the client was deceased.
On October 20th, agents secured an arrest warrant for Dennis (DOB: 10/3/96). Today, she surrendered to the Memphis Police Department and was booked into the Shelby County Jail East Women’s Facility on a count of TennCare Fraud. She was released on her own recogni zance.

WEST MEMPHIS, Ark.– A community is mourning after a woman was shot and killed outside her West Memphis home over the weekend.
55-year-old Donna Christley was shot and killed Saturday night outside her home on Wil son Road in West Memphis, Arkansas.
“Donna was the ‘thread’ that kept this ‘blan ket’ together. Donna was the one that we all called on and right now we’re broken,” said Darrin Christley, Donna’s brother-in-law.
Donna is the third woman who has been killed in West Memphis this month. Christian Hammock was found dead in a car at a West Memphis gas station on October 23 and Jakeya Hampton died after being shot multiple times on October 8.
We’re told the tragic events started when 25-year-old Lorenzo Allen came to the front door of Christley’s home.
“He was ‘bamming’ on the door,” Christley said. “He wanted my niece to come out. Well, my because she was afraid to come out. He shot at her before and she was afraid of him.”
Darrin Christley said his Donna came outside and asked Allen to leave the property. “And when she turned around to go back in the house, he shot her in the head,” he said.
Police say Lorenzo Allen is wanted for killing Donna Christley is from Memphis and will be charged with capital murder, terroristic act, and five counts of aggravated assault.
US rapper Takeoff, from the chart-topping group Migos, has been shot dead at the age of 28 in Houston, Texas.
The star was killed at a bowling alley where he was playing dice with his uncle and bandmate, Quavo, on Tuesday.
A representative for the musician, real name Kirshnik Khari Ball, confirmed the news to the Associated Press.
Migos were one of the most influential groups of their generation, pioneering a style of rapping in choppy, staccato triplets known as the “Migos flow”.
The band, who split earlier this year, scored several international hits including Bad and Boujee, Versace and Walk It Talk It.

If you know the whereabouts of Lorenzo Allen, you are urged to call the West Memphis Police Department @ (870) 732-7555.
The shooting took place at about 02:30 local time (07:30 GMT) on a balcony out side the 810 Billiards and Bowling Alley.
Police said 40 to 50 guests had been at a private party when someone opened fire. Security guards in the area heard the shots but did not see who fired the gun.
Kirshnik Khari Ball, known profession ally as Takeoff, was an American rap per. He was best known as a member of the hip hop trio Migos along with his uncle Quavo and first cousin once removed Offset. Migos’ 2013 hit “Versace” went viral and peaked at number 99 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The telling a great story has the power to change, inspire, touch, and captivate. Children’s books have always been her favorite of all other genres. Children look at the world differently, and LaTonya is intrigued by their honesty, humor, and simple view of the world. She wants to tell stories that protect, and highlight those traits.
In 2009, LaTonya started blogging, writing about her life experiences, adventures, and her love of food. Blogging gave her a chance to tell different stories, make new friends and explore so much more. Today, she blogs every now and then at AlwaysLaTonya.com. Her love of children’s books has brought her full circle. Writing for children has always been her passion.
LaTonya is married to her col lege sweetheart, Mr. Husband and they have six children and seven grandchildren. Her aim is to create books where they can see themselves and be proud of who they are. She’s an instructor in the Department of Multimedia Communi cations at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. She also has a Master’s in Journalism from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
Community members and sponsors gathered at the Jackson Fairgrounds for the 7th annual Danc ing with the STARs presented by Leaders Credit Union benefitting The STAR Center. Viewers from EPlusTV’s broadcast were glued to the screen as The STAR Center’s largest fundraiser came to fruition. The event featured eight couples that ranged from civil ser vants to business owners, salespeople, coaches, and realtors. “The people of Jackson are amazing, and they showed up again,” said Cassidy Spen cer, Vice President Development, Marketing and Events for The STAR Center. “For over thirty-four years, this community has supported people with disabilities and their impact is felt across the state.”
Congratulations to the 2022 Dancing with the STARs Mirror Ball Trophy winners Marda Phelps Wallace and Jonathan Pounds!
Marda brought the audience to their feet with the most memorable mo ment of the night when she punctuated her final dance move that ended in the splits!!
Marda never ceases to amaze us with her boundless energy! Marda serves as our Jackson Vice Mayor and Councilwoman.
I am also super proud of my hairdresser, Collene Commage.
Collene, a hair salon owner, realtor with Conner Real Estate, and mod el, had the most stunning dress of the night and won the award for best costume! The style of her dress reminded me of an ode to Josephine Baker. She and her dance partner captivated the crowd with their style and clas sic moves on the dance floor.
What a fantastic night for the STAR Center! It was great to cheer every one on! It was also a min-reunion for me because I had the chance to see some of my former STAR team members and sev eral Leadership Jackson classmates. Huge thanks to Joey Conner and Conner Real Estate for being a ballroom sponsor this year and for the invita tion to sit at one of their guest tables. Sean and I enjoyed an entertaining evening for an excellent cause!
Congratulations to everyone who helped the STAR Center raise more than $320,000 to help “Crush the No” for individuals with disabilities!!Wendy Isom Mercer with husband Sane.

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Lane Dragons wrapped up their home slate on Saturday with a win over the Central State Marauders, 42-31.
The offense wasted little time getting on the board, capitalizing on good field position when Virgil Young took the opening kickoff 42 yards to set the Dragons up near midfield.
Head coach Vyron Brown used a little trickeration on the opening play from scrimmage, executing a double pass from Tarik McKinzie to Michael Huntley who found tight end Henry Calixte down the seam for a gain of 34 yards. McKinzie then completed passes to Calixte and Jacquez Jones to move the offense inside the 10-yard line. Marlen Peters finished off the drive with a touchdown run from six yards out.
It would be a sign of things to come as Lane moved the ball at will throughout the afternoon. Both quar terbacks played and had efficient games. Hunt ley finished 7-of-10 for 131 yards and two touchdowns and added a score on the ground.
McKinzie completed five passes for 64 yards and had five rushes for 59 yards.
Jones contin ued his break out campaign with seven catches for 152 yards and two touchdowns, one of 54 yards and another from 30 yards out on a fourth down play.
The Dragons offensive line mauled the Marauders defensive front all game, paving the way for the backs to rush for a combined 329 yards, 7.8 yards per carry, and four rushing touchdowns.
Brown rewarded the group by handing the ball off to Taviauhn Turner late in the fourth quarter when a first down would effectively end the game. The 6’1 300-pound hogmollie busted through the line and broke six tackles as he lumbered down the field for a 26-yard gain to put the game on ice.
Walter Tatum led the defense with 10 tackles and an interception. Jeffrey Johnson added eight stops for the Dragons. Lane will wrap up their season next Saturday when they travel to Georgia to take on Savannah State. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 PM EST.

Athletic coaches play an extremely influential and unique role in the lives of young peo ple, often serving as mentor to the boys they coach.
Because of these special relationships, Coaches are uniquely poised to positively influ ence how young men think and behave both on and off the court.
A perfect example of this Denmark, Tennessee native Terrandus Smith. Terrandus is 24 years old and has expressed a Love for Sports his entire life. He also plays for The Jackson Underdawgs
A 2016 graduate of Southside High School, Terrandus displayed discipline and good sportsmanship and played a big role as the Southside Hawks took two trips to The State Championship. That’swhen his fans discovered that “Rann had Bunnies’’ because this young man knows what to do with his hands.
While continuing his education at Arkansas Mid-South and Union University, Terrandus continued to ‘’Show Up and Show Out’’ as a guard with his own fan club which showed up for every game and because of his abilities to dunk and land three point shots his mom gave him the name Super Rann!
When asked about going Pro and his thoughts of recruits Terrandus simply replied “I Just Love The Game.”
His love for the game continues as he is the Assistant Coach at The University School of Jackson High School Boys and he was recently blessed with the Head Coach position at University School of Jackson -Middle School Boys.
“We have always believed that the score board don’t always tell the entire story because the heart of this young man stands out -Win, Lose, or Draw,” said Rann’s mom, Kemekia Smith.
Congratulations is also in order for Colby Spann on becoming Head Boys basketball coach at Heav enview Middle School in Memphis, Tn.
Colby is a 2014 graduate of South Side and a member of their boys basketball State championship team. Colby and Smith are best friends.
“It’s funny,” said Spann, “we are the very best of friends and we both played T-ball and middle school baseball and basketball before going to South Side to play baseball and basketball winning a State title together. That’s special and a lifetime of memories! We are now in our first year as head coaches, truly a blessing!”
“I’m so proud of them both. They are growing up to be productive and responsible adults. Coaching puts them in a position to mentor to so many, said Colby Spann’s mother Tiffany Spight.
