WINTER PLANT PREPS
West Tennessee Many people are at a loss when summer and fall comes to a close when it comes to care OUTDOORS for their plants. After doing a little research I found some information that might be helpful with Ray Jones this winter. Several plants such as evergreens, maple trees and shrubs should be planted in Send photos to: numberonecoach@hotmail.com winter to be ready for growth in the spring. or 731-694-8614 Some plants will need to be wrapped with vinyl if you live in areas where deer may rub during mating season. Attention should be paid to spacing of plants in order to make sure they are not too close together. Most plants can survive the winter freeze but they must have adequate watering throughout the winter. Bulbs such as tulips can be planted in winter and will bloom in the spring and summer also. In addition to outdoor plants house plants can be brought inside to continue growing through winter and be ready to resume blooming in summer. Good luck with your winter plant care in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee.

MAN STRANGLES GIRLFRIEND AFTER SHE FINDS SEXTS TO GAY MEN ON HIS PHONE 11/01/2021 Jason Steen
23-year-old Timothy Strickland faces multiple charges, including felony aggravated assault/ strangulation, after his girlfriend reportedly found messages between him and other men on his phone that he was attempting to hook up with. In a statement from the victim to Scoop: Nashville, the victim explains: “I called the police on
him this morning for beating my ass because I went through his phone & seen him texting gay men & trying to have sex with them.
I told him to get out & he strangled me, punched my head repeatedly, broke my iPhone, stole $180 out of my wallet. Burned my SSC, & stole my phone then proceeded to call his ex gf in my face to make me angry. I ran outside to get a neighbor to call 911. When he was arrested he threw his face in dirt trying to swallow it so he could choke & die so he wouldn’t have to go to jail.” www.scoopnashville.com

And Your Point is . . . Dunning Kruger Effect Is All Around by Elvis Rogers A 1999 study by two Cornell University psychology professors seemed to demonstrate something that we have always noticed but just never had a name for: The Dunning-Kruger Effect. This study points out a cognitive bias in which people wrongly over estimate their knowledge or ability in a certain area. In short, many people with limited knowledge or competence in a given area think they know much more about it than they really do and to add to the problem they lack the reasoning skills to realize it. In these studies the less competent members of the study group consistently rated themselves in the upper percentiles while the most actual competent members rated themselves lower. This difference in self-evaluation scores is partly due to the fact that experts in a field know that there are continuous gaps in their knowledge that are yet to be filled. They also tend to question their own reasoning more as their knowledge increases and they grow to understand that they may not be entirely correct in their thinking. The novice “expert” on the other hand just seems to know it all and does not want to be told otherwise. We see this played out in our lives as we read social media, watch the talking heads on television or talk around the water cooler at work. Someone reads an article or has a cousin at the hospital or in the military or maybe they once visited China and now they know everything about it. They don’t take into account the various levels of expertise required to do do things nor the complexities that are brought about by change. For example one might read a news story and think that they know all about the world power grid but would they attempt to walk into the local power station with a monkey wrench in hand to repair something? Probably not. Most important things are too complex to learn quickly. The Dunning-Kruger effect is evident not only as it applies to peoples perceived knowledge of world events but also manifests itself in how people view their abilities in all areas. It can be the entertainer that sounds horrible, the beauty queen that’s not so beautiful or the financial advisor that has a “sure thing” idea for your investments. Dunning-Kruger is a cousin to an idea from twenty years earlier the “Peter Principle” that describes how people in a given situation rise to their level of incompetence and remain there. The truth is that the more a person learns the more humbled they become about the possibility that there is so much more out there that they don’t know. Think about that as you move through your life today. You can read my books on Amazon.com or contact me at elvisrogers@yahoo.com

#NNPA BLACKPRESS - COMMENTARY:
IT HAD BETTER BE A HOAX
NNPA NEWSWIRE — It would be an understatement to say I was dismayed upon hearing about a challenge on social media that involved students filming themselves physically assaulting teachers. All I could think of was how underpaid teachers are and how there are some adults who live for and love being in the classroom, despite being underpaid and sometimes under-appreciated because of incompetent leadership. I thought about the teachers who use their salaries to help their students.
November 1, 2021 By Cheryl Smith, Publisher of I Messenger Media and Texas Metro News I love teaching! When I was eight-years old, my friends were playing “house” and “doctor.” I was in another room with my sister, two younger cousins and any neighborhood child I could round up on our street in Newark, NJ, and we were playing “school.” Of course, I was the teacher. I was good too. They listened and learned. Little did I know that I would eventually end up in a classroom as a college professor. It would be an understatement to say I was dismayed upon hearing about a challenge on social media that involved students filming themselves physically assaulting teachers. All I could think of was how underpaid teachers are and how there are some adults who live for and love being in the classroom, despite being underpaid and sometimes under-appreciated because of incompetent leadership. I thought about the teachers who use their salaries to help their students. Then too, there are the teachers who are more of a parent to students than the ones whose DNA is a match. And there are the teachers who are social workers, counselors, personal shoppers, tutors, UberEats, disciplinarians and more. Admittedly as children, there’s an expectation that there is a level of stupidity that all will experience. As I heard more and more about the “Slap a Teacher” challenge, I tried to imagine what my reaction would have been had someone’s child hit me. Sure, every generation thinks that the next generation is crazier but with the advent of social media and camera phones, well, it’s easier today to have receipts in the form of inappropriate photos, messages and videos. Denial was easier for previous generations, but today, the proof is there and for generations to come; you are GUILTY. And speaking of guilty, I thought about a student hitting me and all I could hear was a judge, saying “guilty” and then the loud clanging of the cell door behind me as I pondered receiving the stiffest penalty for opening a can of Whoop You know WHAT! I also thought about the parents who have let their children become kookoo for Cocoa Puffs. Sure, some children are going to act out when their parents are not around but today it appears there’s no end to the drama, no stopping point, no voice of reason. I contend that part of the reason is that so many young people are being taught that there are no boundaries, just as there are no standards. As one student told me, “My momma said I don’t have to respect anyone if I feel like they are disrespecting me!” Which brings me to my truth. Everyone needs to decide what type of person they are going to be and what they decide should not be based upon how they are treated. If any child that participates in some of these stupid challenges has a conscience, they are going to have some serious regrets in the future. So, I sighed with relief when I received reports that the Slap a Teacher Challenge was a hoax. Sure, there have been reports of violence against teachers and the social media site has been quick to disassociate from any acts of violence. With all the other stupid gimmicks, I still wouldn’t be surprised if someone tried a stunt that could have a dramatic and devastating outcome. So, parents, talk to your children. Have a candid talk about acceptable behavior. Yeah, I know there will be the ones who are hell bent on being rebellious. We just don’t need you contributing to the foolishness because just like parents are held accountable for their children’s truancy, you need to be held accountable for letting your children grow up not knowing that there are consequences and repercussions for their actions. The results won’t be funny because one day, they may run up on the WRONG PERSON! 11-04-21 CSENEWS P.9

Hickbottom Named OVC Football Offensive Player of the Week
10/31/2021 NASHVILLE — Geremy Hickbottom secured his second OVC Football Offensive Player of the Week award this season after a fantastic performance in TSU’s 27-21 win over Murray State on Saturday. Hickbottom accounted for 246 yards of total offense and four touchdowns as Tennessee State topped Murray State 27-21 to win its fourth-straight game (the longest winning streak for the program since 2016). The Grambling transfer completed 17-of-29 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown and carried the ball nine times for 87 yards (9.7 ypc) and three additional touchdowns. Hickbottom ran for an eightyard touchdown in the second quarter, the only points for either team in the first half. After the Big Blue forced a MSU turnover on the opening drive of the second half, Hickbottom ran for a 65-yard touchdown and four minutes later threw a 24-yard touchdown to give his team a 21-0 advantage. After the Racers tied the game with 4:30 to play, Hickbottom led the team on an 8-play, 62-yard drive which he capped with a seven-yard score. His three rushing touchdowns are the most for a Tiger quarterback since Antonio Heffner in 2006. Hickbottom has had multiple rushing TD’s in consecutive games. and ranks 16th nationally in passing yards/completion (13.53), 25th in rushing touchdowns (7) and 29th in passing efficiency (139.8) and points responsible for/game (14.0). TSU will travel to take on OVC leader UT Martin on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
LATE TOUCHDOWN LIFTS LANE PAST CENTRAL STATE
by Joel Worthington WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Lane College football team capitalized on a couple of late stops from their defense and turned them into scores as they squeaked out a 16-14 victory over Central State on Saturday. Trailing 14-3 in the fourth quarter, quarterback Michael Huntley took a first and goal shotgun snap around the left side for the Dragons first touchdown of the game. Lane would get stops from their defense on the next two possessions but stalled inside the 10-yard line on fourth and goal on both the ensuing drives. The defense stepped up once again and forced a turnover and the third time was the charm. On fourth and goal with just over two minutes remaining, the Dragons lined up in their jumbo package as reigning SIAC Player of the Week Ike Brownpunched it in from two yards out to give Lane their first lead of the game. The defense iced the game on the next possession, forcing a turnover on downs and securing the road victory and keeping Lane’s hopes of SIAC West Division title alive. Lane racked up 225 yards rushing along with 21 total first downs. The visitors did struggle through the air in wet conditions, netting a season-low 54 yards passing. “It’s always good to get a win, even when you don’t play your best,” said head coach Vyron Brown. “The guys stepped up when it mattered most and put it away in the end.” Ball control was a key component in the comeback victory as Lane held a more than 2-to-1 advantage in time of possession. Third downs were a big part of that as the Dragons defense held the Marauders to 0-for-9 on third down while the offense converted 7-of-17 chances. The Dragons will wrap up the regular season in South Carolina next Saturday when they take on Benedict. The two teams last met in 2019 with Lane taking the contest 30-23. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 PM EST.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT TO RECOGNIZE NATIONAL DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH
JACKSON, Tenn. – The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department joins the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in recognizing November as National Diabetes Awareness Month. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. More than 34 million people in the United States have diabetes, and 1 in 5 of them don’t know they have it, according to the CDC. In the United States, 88 million adults have prediabetes and more than 84% of them don’t know they have it. Prediabetes is a serious health condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. “Diabetes education is important because many people don’t even know they have the disease,” Health Educator Amanda Johnson said. “Without proper care and education, diabetes can be deadly.” People with diabetes are twice as likely to have heart disease or stroke as people without diabetes, according to CDC. Diabetes is a leading cause of chronic kidney disease in the United States, lower-limb amputations, and adult blindness. Smokers are 30-40% more like to develop type 2 diabetes than nonsmokers. People with diabetes who smoke are more likely to develop serious related health problems, including heart and kidney disease.
You’re at risk for developing prediabetes or type 2 diabetes if you:
Are overweight Are age 45 or older Have a parent, brother, or sister with type 2 diabetes Are physically active less than three times a week Have ever had gestational diabetes (diabetes while pregnant) or given birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed through a structured lifestyle change program that promotes weight loss, healthy eating, and increased physical activity. “Diabetes can be controlled and managed with early identification and education,” Johnson said. “It’s better to be proactive than reactive.” The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department provides free education for people living with diabetes and prediabetes. Call 731-423-3020 for more information about those workshops. Find more information about diabetes at https://www.cdc.gov/diabetes/. 11-04-21 CSENEWS P.16
