Three brothers charged in deadly Frayser shooting

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Three brothers have been charged in a shooting that took the life of a man in Fray ser over the weekend.

Detectives have arrested (r-l) Ajaylin, Alexavier, and Artavioius Williamson in the shooting death of Christo pher Cain.

Police say this all happened after Cain got into an argu ment with Artavious earlier that day.

According to police, Artavious came back later that evening with his two brothers and challenged Cain to a fight.

The witness told detectives that when Cain went to open the door to his apartment, Ajaylin shot him in the chest.

Cain was rushed to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

“Councilman Donnell was appointed, this morning, to fill the unexpired term of former Councilman Ernest Brooks II. He will be a great addition to the city council.”

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is part nering with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) to increase im paired-driving enforcement from December 14, 2022, to January 1, 2023, surrounding the holiday season. The THSO’s statewide Booze It and Lose It campaign is part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over nationwide mobilization.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office will be conduct ing increased patrols on roadways throughout the county in an effort to curb impaired driving during this busy holiday season.

For most of my life I have been an avid sports follower. Growing up I became sort of a “sports nut”. I had a favor ite team in every sport and followed their every move. My emotions rose and fell during every season.

The beginning of base ball, basketball or football seasons marked the passing of time. My older brother passed on his baseball card collection to me. I had many of the most sought after cards but they were worthless on the market because I played with them and handled them so much over the years.

My pro football team was the Dallas Cowboys and that’s because when I was young we seemed to always get either Dallas or New Orleans football games on tele vision and the Cowboys were great and the Saints were always bad.

Some of my favorite childhood memories are of listen ing to the St. Louis Cardinal baseball games on the porch with my daddy because at that time the Cardinals were all that we got on the radio.

That was before the Atlanta Superstation and cable television. Parents often think that taking their children to Disneyworld or The Grand Canyon is creating mem ories but it’s often those moments that go mostly unno ticed that are remembered.

When I think of those times on the porch I can imagine the summer heat and the smell of plowed dirt, summer rain and honeysuckles. I don’t recollect the smell of Disneyworld.

As with most families in Mississippi, my family was split between State and Ole Miss in college sports. Some of my relatives went to one school and some to the other. My loyalty fell with the State side and has remained ever since. - Cont’d page 8

UPDATE: SHERIFF GIVES NEW DETAILS ON FATAL GIBSON COUNTY SHOOTING

GIBSON CO. Tenn. — Second murder suspect in custody.

According to the Gibson County Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Marshals Service, a second murder suspect is in custody following a deadly shooting incident in Gibson County.

Gibson Co. Sheriff’s Depart ment had request ed the assistance of the U.S. Mar shals Service Two Rivers Violent Fu gitive Task Force in Jackson to assist in locating and apprehending suspect 28-yearold, Tyler Pierce.

Tyler Pierce: Courtesy of US Marshals U.S. Marshal Tyreece Mill er announced Sunday that Pierce, 28, was located Saturday evening at a residence in Hardeman County.

Pierce fled the scene into a wooded area and after an extensive search by the Marshals Task Force and the Hardeman County Sheriff’s Department, he was taken into custody.

One suspect, Johnny Dale Yarbrough, is still at large. If you have any information, you are asked to contact the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office at (731) 855-1121 or Crime Stoppers at (731) 424-8477.

Woods Addresses JMC Friends of the Library

Dr. Jerry Woods recently presented the program at the First Thursday Program sponsored by Jackson Madison County “Friends of the Library”. Woods spoke on the Julius Rosenwald School Building Program and highlighted the play he wrote “Much Obliged Mr. Rosenwald” which was presented for the JMC Bicentennial last summer.

The play “Much Obliged Mr. Rosenwald” pays tribute to philanthropist Julius Rosenwald. Julius Rosenwald, birthed the Rosenwald School Building Fund which helped to build more than 5000 schools for African Americans in the rural southern states between 19171932.

Dr. Jerry Woods had the privilege of writing, producing and directing the show which was performed as part of the JMC Bicentennial in June 2022. Local actor, Billy Worboys played the role of Julius Rosenwald superbly.

During the program, Dr. Woods presented parts of the narrative interspersed with vignettes of play.

BUCK HARVEST PRIDE

Deer season has been really booming with lots of nice bucks being reported having been harvested this season. All around West Tennessee you see hunters riding with pride as their bucks and ATV’s sit behind them. There is a certain pride that hunters have when they show off the bucks that is different from a doe harvest.

Doe are for the freezer and bucks are for bragging rights that last until someone gets one better.

Never under estimate the skill it takes to harvest nice bucks because they don’t just make mistakes everyday like the does. They are clever and smart and it takes a well prepared plan to out smart the wise buck.

Many hunters go after the same buck for years before finally getting a shot and still miss. It gets so personal sometimes that the buck earns a name from the hunters in the area.

Many times several people go after the same buck until someone gets lucky because skill is not always good enough. When skill, timing and luck comes togeth er it produces that pride that only a big buck can produce.

Gamma Psi Chapter – Walk for Education and Health, Nutrition, and Hypertension

Event

Gamma Psi Chapter participated in their annual Walk for Education with affiliates Xinos, Kudos and Anthropos and guest. The walk was held at Jackson Careers and Tech nology Middle School.

Dr. Mechelle Moragne, of Taylor Medical Center, presented a health program with em phasis on Diabetes along with Hypertension.

Gamma Psi Chapter also made a $250 contribution to the Jackson Equity Program. The contribution was received by Matthew Marshall, CEO of the United Way Program.

The warm up for the walk was led by a former Xinos, Ayanna Campbell. The walk will benefit our Xinos and Kudos scholarship program.

This year’s theme was: “Walking for our nation’s most precious resource, CHIL DREN”. The chair of the event was Mrs. Sheneca Wil liams and Chapter President is Mrs. LaTasha Chism.

Mr. Billy Joe Rogers also known to friends as “Hollywood” was born on May 16, 1942 in Jack son, Tennessee to the late J.E. and Essie Lee Rogers. On November 29, 2022, God called Billy Joe home.

He received his education and graduated from West High School in Denmark, Tennessee in 1960. He later married Georgia A. Hobson on April 28, 1962 and moved to California. To to this union four children were born.

He was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather. He loved to fish, work on cars, and help anybody that needed help. He never turned anyone down no matter how he was feeling. He loved his family, friends, and he knew he was loved dearly.

We have lost a jewel in the Jackson TN and surrounding areas. Our world has lost an exceptional soul. Ms. Pat Brown and Pat Brown School Of Dancing was the embryo of my exposure to the arts world. I began dance lessons with with Ms. Pat at the age of 3. This is where I learned poise and refinement on stage. Fast forward to 1997, I walked into my Juilliard School audition with the same grace and poise taught by Ms. Pat Brown.

April 1997, I was accepted with a full scholarship to The Juillard School in NY. In 2019, upon my return to Jackson, TN, it was an honor to release my daughter to her instruction.

Ms. Pat taught each student with grace, refinement, structure and discipline. Her attributes carried over to her students in not just the area of dance, but everyday life.

Ms. Pat was always present when I came to perform in my birthplace of Jackson, TN. Dr. Jordan Tang, former conductor of The Jackson Symphony in Jackson, TN allowed me to have my first professsional performance contract while I was in Juilliard. I sang the beautiful work, “Brahm’s Alto Rhapsody.” Ms. Pat was front and center at this performance. She relayed to me that she watched me walk on stage with such poise and grace. Ms. Pat knew then that her instruction was not in vein.

Ms. Pat and her daughter, Kim Brown Turner were with me every step of the way during my long term health battle. She sweetly talked to me and encouraged me to live. For that, I am forever grateful.

Ms. Pat Brown is no longer in pain and no longer with troubles of this world. My heart is grieving because she is no longer with us on earth, but my soul is uplifted in knowing she is dancing in heaven with a brand new body. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

I sincerely ask for prayers for Ms. Pat Brown’s family, loved ones and friends. Her loss has impacted not just Jackson TN and the surrounding communities, but the world. There are many around the world who carry her legacy. We love you forever! I will continue to live with Ms. Pat Brown’s legacy and instruction as I continue to perform across the world. There was a time when I tried to go to every game possible and I went to my first game at about age twelve. Back then you could bring your own football and go out on the field after the game and play if you wanted to.

I have so many memories about ballgames in Starkville and so much has changed since then that it’s no longer the same although I still brood for weeks if we lose the Egg Bowl.

As time has gone by my interest has diminished by degrees each year. It no longer bothers me if my team disappoints me and that’s a good attitude to have if you pull for Mississippi State or the Dallas Cowboys.

I have tried to shift some of my thoughts to the welfare of others at this time of year. My wife is probably the most compassionate person on earth so that helps keep me more centered in that regard.

You may know that the rates of suicides and natural deaths both increase this time of year. A lot of people see Christmas and the New Year as an emotional marker. They either hang on to make it to one more Christmas or they give up at the end of the year and don’t want to risk living through another.

The divorce rate also spikes greatly in January for much the same reasons.

Take just a little of the time and anguish that you spend worrying about the bowl game, the play-offs and the coaching changes and turn it in some positive way towards some unhappy or troubled person.

We all know a few of those. Maybe the small gesture of help or encouragement might be what’s needed to get them “over the hump” of the end of the old year and the start of the new. It seems like a lot of troubles can pass if folks can just make it to February. The end of winter and beginning of spring brings hope and promise Sometime life does not seem as harsh. .

As for my sports teams - my beloved Bulldogs, my has-been Cowboys and my up and down Cardinals, I’ll keep up with them but I’ll keep a lid on my emotional investment. After all, it’s not life or death......but some things are life or death.... so maybe I’ll just reach out to an old friend instead.. Food for thought.....in December

WAYS TO SAY “NO!”

During these holidays, we are interacting with more individuals. The more peo ple we see, the more we are influenced to please others more and please ourselves. There are many areas of our lives where we need to practice saying “No” and protect ourselves. I spontaneously think of these: CREDIT OFFERS – adding debt, overspending, giving more than we can afford; SCAMS – any time something sounds too good to be true, it probably is; FOODS – too much or not healthy for you; DRUGS – any from the street, the pharmacy, or the liquor store not recommended for you; VIOLENCE OR VANDALISM – one second of bad behavior can change your life for years of bad times.

Sometimes we say “No” but we feel tempted or that we have hurt someone else’s feelings. Try being firm with yourself and with others so that saying “No” really works!

Say “No” politely – No Way! No, I don’t want that. No, I am not interested

Be a broken record – No way No I think I said No, Never No Way No Not for me! What part of “no” don’t you understand?

Give a compliment – I thought you were smarter than that. I have always thought of that as fun but not now. Why do we want to ruin ourselves?

State the facts – That is habit forming for me and I do not need bad habits. I don’t want a police record. It is bad for good health.

Laugh it off – No way, I want good memories of this. I need all the brain cells I can have. This is not the right weather for that.

Just walk away – Sorry, someone is waiting for me. See you around. Hold on, I have to go call someone. No way, Good-Bye!

Change the subject – Is it just me, or is it hot in here?

Hey, let’s go shoot some basketball. Have you seen that new movie yet?

Make excuses – I must take care of my cousin tonight. Nope, I know that will hurt my work/game. My mom/ dad/children would be too upset with me. My bad driv ing would be dangerous. My breath would give me away.
