18-YEAR-OLD ELECTED MAYOR OF EARLE, ARKANSAS
“In November of 2021, I met with a young man about his desire to run for mayor in his hometown of Earle, Arkansas, said Jackson Mayor Scott Conger in a recenty Facebook post. “He had vision, passion and maturity. Last Tuesday, Jaylen Smith became the youngest Black mayor ever elected in the United States! Congratulations Jaylen!”
Smith, a Democrat, was elected mayor of Earle – population 1,831 – on Tuesday. He defeated his opponent, Nemi Matthews, the city’s street and sanitation superintendent, by 235 votes to 185, according to unofficial results from the Crittenden County Clerk’s office and relayed to CNN by Patrick Robinson, a probate clerk.
“I didn’t run to make a name for myself,” Smith told CNN on Wednesday. “I ran because I wanted to help my community and move my community in the direction that it needed to be moved in.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY COACH
Several years ago I approached Bill Marable about writing outdoors articles for the then West Tennessee Examiner. Bill agreed to give it a try and I asked him after about the first three articles what he thought about them.
Bill is very candid and he replied “I haven’t taken them down have I?” so I took that to mean he liked the idea. P 5

HAPPY BIRTHDAY COACH
Cont’d from page 2
To my enjoyment I have since written many weekly outdoors reports in hopes that readers will enjoy them.
When a person goes through some of the things that I have gone through; such as the lost a son, it takes a lot to keep going. One of my passions is the outdoors and I try to bring the outdoors to our readers through these articles.
Today December 12 as I write this article is my birthday and I want to share the joy of outdoor life with you. As much as I enjoyed teaching/ coaching, the thrill of being out in nature and bringing it to the readers is very fulfilling, although nothing can replace my son Bradley.
However, on this day it is pleasurable for me to try and get readers to fill what it is like to be in the outdoors of West Tennessee enjoying the many wonders.
Ball games, concerts, parties and all other forms of entertainment are good fun. Nevertheless, to each his own, but for me and many others being outside breathing Gods’ air among the trees and nature is the ultimate climax.
Happy Birthday Coach and I hope you can enjoy yourself doing your thing as much as I do when I am in the Good Ole Outdoors of West Tennessee.
Oh, by the way, pass it along to a kid so they can appreciate it also.

NORTH SIDE HIGH HAS NEW HEAD FOOTBALL COACH
By Tristyn Stoop - wbbjtv.com
JACKSON, Tenn. — North Side High School has a new head football coach.
The school system says that the veteran coach -Woodrow Lowe Jr. -is bringing with more over 25 years of experience from high school to the professional level.
The school system says that includes coaching the Saints to consecutive playoff appearances, being the second all-time winningest coach at Fayette-Ware, and achieving 19 wins in three seasons.
“We interviewed a great pool of applicants, but few have the level of coaching and administrative experience as Coach Lowe. He’s increased student participation at every stop he’s made, and he has the passion necessary to grow the North Side program,” said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Ricky Catlett.
“Ten years ago, North Side football was known statewide for its football team. I believe the talent is still there. With Principal Chandler’s support, we’ll assemble a culture to build it back. It’s important for the entire student body to desire a winning culture. I’m excited to get started,” Lowe said.
He is the son of former NFL All-Pro linebacker Woodrow Lowe Sr.

12 DAYS OF GRATITUDE -Myrtle Russell
Here’s a different spin on the 12 days of Christmas. I’m calling it 12 DAYS OF GRATITUDE. Beginning December 14, list one thing you’re grateful for this holiday season. Add one thing each day so that by Dec 25, you have at least 12 reasons to be grateful for this Christmas! It’s an easy “small change” way to start a Gratitude Journal. I’ll be sharing my list starting tomorrow. Hope you will too!
