Man indicted in shooting deaths Cont’d from page 1

According to the DA’s office, the shootings happened around 4 a.m. on Sept. 19 at a home in the 3800 block of Macon Road. Barkley (R) had been living there last summer with a man and his wife, officials said. Investigators said Barkley had been told he would have to move out by the end of the month. Barkley walked into the couple’s bedroom that morning and began shooting, hitting the man twice and his wife four times, according to the DA’s office. The victims managed to run from the house, but the woman collapsed on the sidewalk. Her husband made it to a nearby gas station, where he asked the owner to call police. The victims were taken to hospitals, where they died a few hours later, the DA said. Barkley was identified as a suspect and was arrested that same morning at a relative’s home in the 600 block of Hudson St. in the Binghampton area.

Marterrius Hite, 29 Investigators said that first responders were called to a scene at a Whitehaven apartment on July 13, 2015 where Hite reported he found Deandre Davis (2-years-old) floating in a bathtub and was unresponsive. Davis was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center where he died shortly after arriving. Police and medical personnel noticed cuts and bruising on the baby’s body. When asked, Hite admitted that he, “popped him several times with a belt on his stomach and legs” before finding the child in the bathtub. The DA’s Office said Hite was wearing a belt that had patterned studs consistent with injuries to the baby’s back and legs. The medical examiner’s report found that Deandre Davis had head trauma, brain hemorrhaging, numerous internal injuries in his abdomen. The medical examiner also noted scars and wounds in various stages of healing on the baby’s torso, legs and right arm. A doctor for the defense told the jury the boy had died from cancer. Hite has been sentenced to life in prison on the murder convictions, and will be sentenced on the remaining charges on March 31.

Let it be known, Chief Thom Corley and the officers of the Jackson Police Department observe Black History Month by recognizing and honoring the legacy of James Neal Cherry Jr. James Neal Cherry Jr. was the first uniformed black patrol officer of the Jackson Police Department who attained the rank of Deputy Chief of Police in 1988. Chief Harvey Marcom with the support of Mayor George Smith showed remarkable courage when they hired James Neal Cherry Jr. as a uniformed police officer in 1964. During the 1960’s, Jackson along with the entire country was struggling with the Constitutional idea of equality and Civil Rights. James Neal Cherry Jr. evidently was an honorable man who possessed remarkable fortitude because history notes his challenges as a uniformed officer in both the black and white communities of Jackson, TN. As noted in the book titled “A Chronicle of Law Enforcement in the South” by Eddie M. Ashmore, James Cherry is quoted “I would like to become a police officer because I would like to have a part in protecting the community in which I live and I believe I can make it a better place to live.” (pg. 241) The book also notes James Cherry once arrested a black man for drunkenness on Sycamore Street, which was called the “Beale Street of Jackson.” When the black offender realized James Cherry was a black man, he stated “no black man was going to arrest him” and he jumped out the car. Jackson Police Chief Thom Corley acknowledges, “Although I did not get the personal opportunity to work with Deputy Chief Cherry, I was honored to have met him prior to his retirement. Chief Cherry was very instrumental in dismantling barriers so others could follow, and his courage set the continuing standard that the only true color of the Jackson Police Department is Blue.” Deputy Chief Derick D. Tisdale acknowledges, “As the fifth black Deputy Chief of Police at the Jackson Police Department, I pay homage to Deputy Chief James Neal Cherry Jr. for his gallant sacrifices that helped pave the way for a position that I am honored to currently hold.” The men and women of the Jackson Police Department remember Deputy Chief James Neal Cherry Jr.

“Slow Down Tennessee” News update from DTRB Traffic Spotters Network!

The Tennessee Highway Safety Office launched a speeding prevention campaign in 2021 called “SLOW DOWN TENNESSEE” To date, traffic fatalities for 2022 are 130 compared to 151 this time last year which is a 13.9% decrease. The campaign is partially in response to reckless driving since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic according to THSO Director Buddy Lewis. “We have all notified the spike in reckless driving occurring since the pandemic. All we ask ghe motoring public is to be considerate of other roadway users and obey traffic laws, so we can make it home safely,” said Lewis. The campaign has been launched in partnership with the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Tennessee Department of Transportation, AAA, the Auto Club Group, Students Against Destructive Decisions and local law enforcement agencies. There continues to be increased public education, awareness, and enforcement efforts to reduce speeding-related crashes, injuries ans fatalities statewide. According to Tennessee’s Integrated Traffic Analysis Network, known as TITAN, there were nearly 23,000 speeding related crashes in Tennessee from 2017-2019, 36% of those crashes involved drivers between ages 18 and 24 “Speeding is a significant problem in Tennessee and not just with older adults” said Tennessee SADD Regional Manager Gavin Gill. “Young adults ans teenagers are engaging in risky behaviors as well. During the pandemic many teenagers felt that speeding would not harm them since the roadways were clear. This is why we are excited to help this SLOW DOWN campaign to help educate and promote young drivers need to follow the marked speed limits and slow down.” “Speeding is a high risk behavior that threatens the safety of all roadway users,” said DTRB Traffic Spotters Network which has over 15,000 area traffic safety volunteers. “When you speed, you risk losing control of your vehicle, crashing into other vehicles, ans causing property damage. A speeding driver may arrive at their destination a few minutes faster, but is the trade off of getting severely injuried or even losing one’s life worth it if a crash occurs?” Let’s all continue to do our part here by obeying traffic laws, showing courtesy to our fellow motorists, and “SLOW DOWN TENNESSEE” Jackson’s No. 1 For more information on traffic safety visit www.tntrafficsafety.org/slow.

And Your Point is . . . Supreme Court May End Affirmative Action at Universities

NNPA NEWSWIRE — “The filing from the office of US Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar emphasized that lower US courts had extensively reviewed Harvard’s racial admissions practices and found them sufficiently limited to meet Supreme Court precedent as they furthered the school’s interest in campus diversity,” CNN reported.

February 19, 2022 By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia The Supreme Court said it will reconsider race-based affirmative action in college admissions. The Monday, January 24, announcement could eliminate campus practices that have widely benefitted African American and Hispanic students. Policies at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina are at the heart of the issue that the court has agreed to consider. A student’s race counts among the criteria used to decide who enters class at those institutions. The Department of Justice urged the justices to reject the case against Harvard. “The filing from the office of US Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar emphasized that lower US courts had extensively reviewed Harvard’s racial admissions practices and found them sufficiently limited to meet Supreme Court precedent as they furthered the school’s interest in campus diversity,” CNN reported. Admissions practices that take a students’ race into account were first upheld in a 1978 Supreme Court decision and reaffirmed in 2003. Such practices have reportedly boosted the admission of Black and Latino students for decades. Stacy M. FIGHT FOR PRISON PHONE JUSTICE

Earlier this month, Color Of Change and our phone justice coalition partners Worth Rises, United Church of Christ Media Justice Ministry, and The Leadership Conference held a virtual meeting with about 30 congressional staffers. We want to share important takeaways from that meeting. We broke down why it was an imperative for these members of Congress to co-sponsor the Martha Wright Prison Phone Justice Act. This bill, among other things, would restore the FCC’s authority to stop prison phone corporations from charging incarcerated people and their families outlandish rates for voice and video calls. With lead co-sponsor Rep. Bobby Rush retiring after this term and with midterms coming up, the time for urgency is now. Tell your member of Congress to co-sponsor the Martha Wright Prison Phone Justice Act!

CONTACT YOUR MEMBER OF CONGRESS

During our call with the congressional staffers, we detailed how prison telecom disproportionately targets Black families and is extracting their wealth. In many cases, that means families have to decide between paying electricity or rent or speaking with their loved ones. West, this is cruel and it must stop. We need to do all we can to make sure families are not being preyed upon by the predatory prison telecom industry. That starts with activating members of Congress to co-sponsor and get this legislation moving — and West, we need your help to make it happen. We will keep fighting for the well-being of Black families who have incarcerated loved ones. Demand your member of Congress to do the same, West. Until Justice is Real, Scott, Rashad, Arisha, Malachi, Megan, Ernie, Palika, Ariel, Madison, Trevor, Erick, Ana, Kristiana, McKayla and the Color Of Change team
