SUSPECT INDICTED IN THE MURDER OF WILLIAM BRIAN MCKENZIE

Convicted murderer Kennan Murphy remains incarcerated at the Madison County Criminal Justice Complex awaiting trial for the First Degree Murder of Thomas Curry, Jr., the attempted murder of another man, and the first degree murder of William Brian McKenzie. On September 25, 2019 a man was shot and another was seriously injured in a shooting that occurred on Neff Street in Jackson, TN. Julio Alvarez died as a result of that shooting. On September 27, 2019 Brian McKenzie was reported missing by his family. Brian had last been seen driving a black Jeep shortly before the time of his disappearance. On October 4, 2019 a man was shot and another man was seriously injured in a shooting that occurred on Fairway Blvd in Jackson, TN. Keenan Murphy was identified as the suspect and arrested a short distance away fleeing from the scene. Thomas Curry, Jr. died as a result of that shooting. After an investigation by the Jackson Tennessee Police Department Keenan Murphy was charged with multiple counts of First Degree Murder and Attempted Murder in Jackson City Court in 2019. These charges were for the shootings incidents on September 25 and October 4, 2019. In 2020 Keenan Murphy was indicted by the Madison County Grand Jury for two counts of First Degree Murder, two counts of Attempted Murder, and two counts of employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony related to the 2019 shootings in Jackson, TN. -Page 4

HORSE NUTRITION

West Tennessee Although horses in the wild can survive OUTDOORS on nature it is not that way for domesticated with Ray Jones horses. They need special attention in order Send photos to: to maintain good health. numberonecoach@hotmail.com or 731-694-8614 The normal thermoneutral zone for horses is between 40 and 80 degrees but when it is lower or higher they may need special care. They can maintain their own core temperature without having to exert extra effort within these temps, but below or above they may have to exert additional effort to stay normal. Horses have natural defenses but when they face difficult weather they might have need for a different diet from the type of hay to the grade of grain feed at the time. Horse owners should look for signs such as animals seeking shelter, shivering or standing in the same position for long periods of time. These may indicate some sort of problem that the horse is dealing with. Horses need a lot of attention to stay healthy including a regular worming system of which many horse owners rotate the type of wormers given to their horses. PHOTO IS JORDIN EVANS GROOMING A HORSE

On August 30, 2021 a submerged Jeep was discovered in a residential pond located in the Howeston Mills subdivision in Jackson, TN. Human remains were found inside the Jeep. The Jeep was immediately identified as the one Brian McKenzie was reported to have been driving on the day he went missing. The remains were sent to Nashville to the State Medical Examiner’s office for autopsy. On December 17, 2021 a Madison County Circuit Court (Division 3) returned a guilty verdict of First Degree Murder, Attempted Murder, and Employing a Firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony against Keenan Murphy for the September 25, 2019 shooting that occurred on Neff Street in Jackson, TN. The 26th Judicial District’s assistant district attorney Brad Champine represented the State of Tennessee during this trial. Keenan Murphy was represented by the public defender’s office. On February 7, 2022 the state Medical Examiner’s Office released their autopsy report that positively identified the remains found in the Jeep as William Brian McKenzie. The medical examiner’s office reported the death was a homicide caused by gun shot wounds. The Jackson Police Department presented the findings and evidence of the investigation into William Brian McKenzie’s death to the 26th Judicial District’s Attorney General. On February 23, 2022 Keenan Murphy was sentenced by Madison County Circuit Court Judge Kyle Adkins to life in prison with the possibility of parole for the murder of Julio Alvarez, 20 years for the attempted murder of the other victim and 6 additional years for the firearm charge. All of his sentences must be served consecutively. On February 28, 2022 Keenan was again indicted by the Madison County Grand Jury for the First Degree Murder of William Brian McKenzie that occurred in Jackson, TN on September 27, 2019 based on the investigation of the Jackson Police Department. Keenan Murphy has been arraigned in Madison County Circuit Court on this most recent charge. Keenan Murphy’s next court appearance is scheduled for May 2022.

State Election Commissioner Jimmy Eldridge receives lifetime service award from Madison County GOP

I was so grateful when Larry called and asked me to present this year’s Lifetime Service Award. It goes to a man I have the highest respect and admiration for. He graduated from Lambuth University with a B. S. in Chemistry/Biology. While in College in Memphis, he worked as a toxicologist at the MED. Later, you can ask him to fill you in on the “famous Jello case.” Throughout his life, he has been an avid musician. He played in the bands “Hoppie” and the “Beau Hemes” that opened for such groups as Paul Revere and the Raiders. He has been past chairman of the Madison County Republican Party. He has served on numerous boards in Madison County. Just a couple were the Jackson Symphony, Jackson Chamber of Commerce, Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He was a Madison County Commissioner and served on numerous committees during his tenure. He decided in 2002 to toss his hat in the ring for District 73 State Legislature and served 8 sessions retiring in 2018. Just a few of his awards since joining the state legislature are Legislature of the Year in 2005, United Way Legislator of the Year 2009, Man of the Year 2011 and Southwest Tennessee Development District Legislator of the Year, 2012 and 2013. He is currently serving as our newest Republican member of the Tennessee State Election Committee. He is married to his lovely wife, Carolyn and has two sons, Michael and Stephen and 4 grandchildren. It is my great privilege to present this award for a Lifetime of Service to the Republican Party to JIMMY ELDRIDGE. -State Representative Chris Todd

And Your Point is . . . 2020 Census Called ‘Worse Undercount’ in Decades as Bureau Misses Millions of Blacks and Hispanics

NNPA NEWSWIRE — The bureau estimated that the 2020 census incorrectly counted 18.8 million residents, double-counting some, wrongly including others, and missing others entirely, even as it came extremely close to reaching an accurate count of the overall population. By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia According to many experts, the COVID-19 pandemic and an administration that displayed a complete disregard for ensuring accuracy led to a consequential undercount in the number of Black, Hispanic, and Native American residents during the 2020 U.S. Census. Further, Census officials admit that they overcounted white and Asian residents. The bureau reported the overall population as 323.2 million. “The undercounting of Black, Latino, Indigenous and other communities of color rob us of the opportunity to be the directors of our fate, reducing our representation and limiting our power while depriving policymakers of the information they need to make informed decisions about where the next hospital will be built or where the next school should be located,” said Damon Hewitt, the president and executive director of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. “In addition, the undercount exacerbates underfunding of our communities because Census data is used as the basis for hundreds of billions of dollars of federal, state, and local appropriations each year,” Hewitt said. The Census population count determines how many representatives each state has in Congress for the next

decade. It also decides how much federal funding communities receive for roads, schools, housing, and social programs. Hundreds of billions of dollars are at stake each time the census occurs. Robert L. Santos, the bureau’s director, displayed little regard for the undercount of minorities. He said the 2020 results were consistent with recent censuses. “This is notable, given the unprecedented challenges of 2020,” Santos said in a statement. “But the results also include some limitations — the 2020 census undercounted many of the same population groups we have historically undercounted, and it overcounted others.” “We remain proud of the job we accomplished in the face of immense challenges,” Mr. Santos said. “And we are ready to work with the stakeholders and the public to leverage this enormously valuable resource fully.” Terri Ann Lowenthal, a leading expert on the census and consultant to governments and others with a stake in the count, told the New York Times that the results were “troubling but not entirely surprising.” “Overall, the results are less accurate than in 2010,” she said. The bureau estimated that the 2020 census incorrectly counted 18.8 million residents, double-counting some,

wrongly including others, and missing others entirely, even as it came extremely close to reaching an accurate count of the overall population. The Times reported that the “estimates released on Thursday — in essence, a statistical adjustment of totals made public last year — are based on an examination of federal records and an extensive survey in which the bureau interviewed residents in some 10,000 census blocks — the smallest unit used in census tabulations. Bureau experts then compared their answers to the actual census results for those blocks.” Officials claimed that the survey enabled the bureau to estimate how many residents it missed entirely in the 2020 count, how many people were counted twice, and how many people — such as deceased persons or shortterm visitors to the United States — were counted mistakenly. Officials began the count after the pandemic shut down operations in April 2020. After other starts and stops, the Trump administration pressured census takers by inexplicably moving up the deadline to finish the count. Trump also attempted to add a citizenship question to the census, further muddying attempts at an accurate count. Many experts complained that more time

was required and called the count unreliable. Some called on then-incoming President Joe Biden to order a recount. “This is the worse census undercount I’ve seen in my 30 years working on census issues,” Arturo Vargas, CEO of the National Association of Latino Elected Officials Education Fund, said during a news conference. “I can’t even find the right word. I’m just upset about the extent of the undercount that has been confirmed by the post-enumeration survey,” Vargas said. “This is a major step backward on this.”

Carter, in his remarks before the city council, “called the city’s redistricting plan a “form of white supremacy” and is calling for five of the nine city council seats to be represented by a member of the minority community.

Carter indicated the city’s own census data which shows an increase in the number of minorities throughout the city. “It’s more than just African-Americans, it’s Hispanics, Asians and Middle Easterners; it’s a variety of different people who make up 53% of the population of the city,” said Carter. Stan Pilant, director of the city’s planning department called it the traditional way its always been done. Pilant who has lead the redistricting process for the city the last four times, explains that’s it’s not a requirement of the law, but it’s good practice. The city’s plan was to simply to divide the city’s populations into nine districts and assign the number evenly making efforts to keep incumbents within their current districts. Carter said “this thought process is ignoring the facts. The traditional way of redistricting is white supremacy! Whites will always find ways to maintain power, even though the statistical data shows otherwise.” “There is only 47% percent of white population, but whites get six out of nine council districts” said Carter. “This is what racism looks like from a government standpoint.” Carter and the NAACP proposed to include requiring five of the nine city council districts go to minority representation to show equal representation in the city. “This would be doing this process correctly and it would be done right as the data in the census intended,” added Carter. A redistricting plan is legally required to be adopted by the April City Council meeting and will go into effect following the next election cycle. Tabling of the original plan was proposed by Councilman Johnny Dodd and seconded by Councilwoman Tara Skinner. 03-17-22 CSENEWS P.9
