Ray Condray is one of six candidates seeking the office City of Jackson Mayor.

Condray’s priorities are faith, family and future of Jackson.

Condray is positioning himself as a conservative choice among the six candidates for Mayor.

He said he grew up in Madison County, and has lived in Jackson for 22 years. He is a father of two and has worked for the automotive management business before transitioning into a consulting role.

Condray said if he’s elected as Jackson’s next Mayor, he will “take a look at all city departments and see how they are run and make adjustments accordingly.”

“I see myself as someone who did what she could to survive the pain,” said Spann, a Lexington resident, who was named one of the recipients of the 2023 Sterling Award and listed as one of the 20 Most Influential Women in West Tennessee. The Jackson Area Business and Professional Women honored the Sterling Award winners during a televised ceremony on March 16th at the Carl Perkins Civic Center.

In 2018, Angela Spann’s teenage son, Tyler, drowned in a riptide during a family vacation in Florida. They were there less than 24 hours when the accident occurred. Henderson County immediately collected funds to help provide safe travel back home for the family. Angela and her husband, Kimmy, decided that the funds collected out of love should go back into the community. So, they founded The Tyler Spann Scholarship Foundation to honor their son. Through the foundation, they have also funded water safety programs and spread awareness about organ and tissue donations. Angela Spann, an ambassador for Mid-South Transplant, speaks across the country educating people, especially about the vital need of organ donation in minority communities.

“Only 5 percent of African-Americans are donors, yet African-Americans make up 75 percent of those waiting on the donor list,” she said. “We need to change those stats.”

The foundation initially started to provide scholarships to four of Tyler’s classmates during their graduation year. “However, over time, other needs became as important,” Angela Spann said. The Spann family ended up holding a blood drive for Tyler’s 16th birthday. She said, “Tyler loved crayons as a child.” She said God gave her a revelation while in a store when she saw the number 24 on the Crayola 24 pack of crayons. The number 24 was also Tyler’s football number. So, The Tyler Spann Foundation started having crayon drives when they heard that there was a need for more crayons in schools. The community raised over 6,000 crayons in three years. As a result of the drive, she said that every child in Henderson County received a new box of crayons.

United Way of West Tennessee Senior Campaign Director Pat Ross nominated Angela Spann for the Sterling Award. Ross said that Angela Spann is most deserving of the recognition because with everything she has been through she is still “uplifting and encouraging” and dedicated to making a positive impact in her community, including serving as a United Way volunteer. Spann also offers words of encouragement and support to other grieving mothers.

As in coaching, planning and preparation are keys to success in growing great tomatoes also. Seasoned gardeners can be caught off guard when it comes to growing tomatoes and having good results. Growing your own vegetables can be very rewarding if you take time to plan, prepare and protect your plants.

In the planning stage you must choose a variety based on the size base, shape, taste and even resistance factors.

Not all tomatoes taste the same nor do they have the same features other than being tomatoes. Research must be done to find the better tasting fruit along with which ones are resilient.

Next, site selection needs to be considered based on the amount of sun that can be available on the plants.

For best results tomatoes need 6 to 8 hours of full sun daily. They can’t survive in areas where it is too waterlogged because it will result in root rot. A lot of water is needed for healthy roots but not everyday as to keep them too moist.

Lastly, insects and disease are a problem for all gardens especially as the season wears on. You must keep a close eye on your garden to know what is bothering your plants so early intervention can be done. If danger lurks in your plants first seek the least toxic treatment before going on to stronger plans.

He said he wants to work on the city’s public safety, infrastructure, cleanliness and fiscal responsibility.”

He is one of the founding members of the conservative organization “We The People” of West Tennessee” the organization has opposed COVID-19 restrictions, drag shows and LGBTQ+ books and local libraries among other issues.

Condray said “there’s been a shift not only in our country, but also in our city, and look at some of the wholesome family values we saw growing up are disappearing.”

“I want people to feel they have a safe, clean wholesome environment to raise their children and be able to call Jackson their home,” said Condray.

He believes his Christian values shape the way he approaches management of city government as Mayor.

“My campaign is based upon Faith, family and future. Our city has lost its identity,” said Condray. “I am committed to bringing back family values that made Jackson great. I will work to assure a better future for our children and our grandchildren.”

Listen to your body talk

Having a human body is a blessing; so much so that I think it should to be at the top of every person’s gratitude list every single day. And if you don’t have a gratitude list, it’s the best reason I can think of to start one. After all, your body is the only vehicle that allows you to experience life as you know it; the only means by which you can interact with the physical world.

Your body is a complex system of organs, tissues, and cells that allow you to see, hear, taste, smell, and touch the world around you. Without your body, you wouldn’t be able to feel the warmth of a hug or enjoy a good meal. You could not walk or get yourself in and out of a vehicle. How would you enjoy sports or entertainment without a body? How would you communicate or experience pleasure?

No one would argue that your body is the key to your livelihood. But the sad reality is that many of us don’t pay attention to this highly sophisticated machine until we are not feeling well. And even then, we don’t appreciate all the things it does right for us to get through whatever it is we’re experiencing. Instead, when we are sick, we waste time complaining about what is going wrong.

I’ve had the flu once that I can remember, long before I began practicing grateful living. It was a bad strain of the flu, the kind that kept me in bed for two weeks with a raw, painful, hacking cough, body aches, sweats, chills, and no appetite, I was too weak and helpless to even shower, let alone do any of the things that super moms do. And during that two week period, not once did I stop to thank the body parts that kept functioning at optimal level to get me through the sick spell. I didn’t think about what I could have done to prevent getting sick in the first place. And more importantly, I paid no attention to my body’s warning that things were about to go awry.

The body’s incredible complexity is also what gives it the ability to recognize and warn us when we’re about to get sick. The first red flag, the one that most of us ignore is changes in our energy level. When the flu bug bit me, I was too busy to recognize when I was tired. I was too hard pressed for time to rest. I had it in my hard head that a few hours of sleep was enough to keep me going. And it wasn’t until I my body said, “Enough Myrtle. I warned you but you didn’t listen so now I’ll have to show you what you need. And I promise you that you are not going to like it.”

Growing up, my mother had a saying when we kids got out of line or just plain acted a fool. She would say, “A hard head makes a soft back end” (she didn’t curse so she chose “backend” over a$$). Lord knows she was right. When we overwork our body, it starts to conserve energy in order to fight the ensuing illness which means you may find yourself feeling more tired than normal, even after a full night of sleep. And if you continue to ignore its warning signs, you are likely to find yourself flat on your back, begging for mercy. Yeap, when we ignore the body’s warning signs, it will step in and make us rest and the longer the rest, the softer the a$$ gets.

Our body is always communicating with us, letting us know when things are about to go wrong.

SIGNALS THAT INDICATE THAT YOUR BODY IS NEEDS ATTENTION:

1. Fatigue

2. Difficulty sleeping

3. Loss of appetite

4. Sudden weight loss or gain

5. Unexplained skin rashes

6. Persistent headaches, body aches and pains

7. Repeated colds

10. Chest pain and unexplained shortness of breath

8. Sudden weight gain

9. Anxiety/Panic attacks

It’s important to listen to your body talk and respond to it cues in positive ways. It’s a step toward showing your body some well deserved gratitude and preventing breakdown that lands you on your backend, unable to fully explore and appreciate the world around us?

5 ways to show your body more appreciation:

1. Pay attention to the warning signs that the body is about to malfunction

a. get enough sleep

b. drink enough water

c. eat nutritious meals and snacks

2. Practice body self-care:

d. engage in regular physical activity 20-30 minutes a day at least 3-5 days a week

3. Seek professional help when needed

4. Get regular health screenings

5. Practice gratitude for your body by starting a gratitude journal. Take a few minutes each day to list the wonderful ways your body has made it possible for you to experience life. It’s a small change that leads to BIG RESULTS!

Your body is an amazing creation and deserves to be treated with love and respect. After all, it’s the only one you’re ever going to get!

Program with JEA STUDENTS BEGIN EMPLOYMENT WITH JACKSON ENERGY AUTHORITY

JACKSON, Tenn. - LOOP, the Jackson-Madison County School System’s celebrated trade-based career pathway, has expanded to include one of the nation’s most comprehensive public utilities. Jackson Energy Authority is the latest entity to partner with the district’s Local Options and Opportunities Program (LOOP 3.0). JEA is providing training and employment to JMCSS students this semester.

“JMCSS and JEA have a shared vision of preparing for the future today. This partnership allows us to be better prepared for growth expected in our region and to assist with meeting approaching needs in our telecommunications services,” said JEA President & CEO Monte Cooper.

Students participating in LOOP 3.0 complete academic work two days per week coupled with three days of training and work within JEA’s Telecommunications Division. Students are also able to utilize online/virtual learning to provide the flexibility necessary for this non-traditional schedule.

“Our students are participating in a hands-on overview of the organization in various departments at JEA, so they’re being exposed to a number of careers and marketable skills that they can build. Their long-term options are unlimited if they’re willing to do the work,” said Melissa Spurgeon, Chief of Staff for JMCSS.

Between LOOP 1.0, LOOP 2.0 (West Tennessee Healthcare), and LOOP 3.0 (JEA), a total of 31 JMCSS high school students are participating in career building and job placement opportunities this semester.

“Whether it’s early robotics and STEM opportunities at the elementary school level, or accelerated academic and career opportunities at our middle and high schools, JMCSS continues to provide families with a great return on investment,” Superintendent Dr. Marlon King said. “We’re excited about this latest partnership.”

menTorship for individuals who agree To Teach for Two years.

UT Martin received a National Science Foundation award in 2021 totaling $1.2 million over five years to recruit 25 individuals who have science, math or engineering degrees to complete master’s degrees and teach STEM subjects. Program participants receive a $29,000 one-year stipend, complete the Master of Science in Initial Licensure degree, and obtain an educator license.

Each teacher who completes the program commits to teach at least two years in a highneed school district and will be supported by a mentor who receives a $2,000 stipend. The mentorship program is designed to encourage these new teachers to complete full careers in the classroom.

Jessica Forsythe (r) had no idea she was a Giraffe Award Recipient until the night of the banquet. We truly suprised her. She was there selflessly supporting others. She was an inspiring Criminal Justice and Psychology major until November 24th 2016. She was a combat medic in the Army. She returned home to pursue her dreams of helping others. Jessica was 4 months pregnant when she was stabbed 105 times. Jessica was honored this year as a 2023 Giraffe Superhero, despite losing vision in one of her eyes, multiple body scars, damaged spinal cord and daily severe pain, she still wants to help others. On Wednesday, March 15, and after a two-day jury trial, a Gibson County Circuit Court at Humboldt jury found Joshua Pewitte guilty of three counts of rape of a child. Pewitte was indicted in 2019 for sexually assaulting a child under 13 years old on at least three occasions from August 2017 to May 2018.

“We want to thank the jury for their public service and for seeing the case how we did. Also, we want to thank the Humboldt Police Department, the Department of Children Services, the Carl Perkins Center, and Dr. Lisa Piercey for their work on this case. Lastly, we want to thank the Child for having the courage to report these heinous acts and seeing this matter through until the end.”

Our prosecution team consisted of Assistant District Attorneys Scott Kirk and Nina Seiler, victim witness coordinator, Carol Oliver, and criminal investigator, Xochilt Joyner.

Pewitte (l) will be sentenced by Circuit Judge Clayburn Peeples on June 6, at 9:00 a.m. He is facing a maximum sentence of 120 years.

WHEREAS, on August 24, 2016, BARHAM INVESTMENT GROUP, LLC, by Deed of Trust of record in Book T2028, at Page 1689, as modified by a Modification of Deed of Trust dated August 15, 2019, of record in Book T2104, at Page 491, in the Register’s Office of Madison County, Tennessee, conveyed the following described property in trust to secure the payment of a Promissory Note in the original principal amount of Forty-Five Thousand Two Hundred and 00/100 Dollars ($45,200.00), payable to SIMMONS BANK, SUCCESSOR BY MERGER TO FIRST SOUTH BANK (hereinafter “Simmons Bank”); and
