APRIL AND HER CRAPPIE

West Tennessee

Hall of OUTDOORS Fame bas- with Ray Jones ketball playSend photos to: er has a big numberonecoach@hotmail.com or 731-694-8614 day on the Tennessee River. April Pearson-Thomas is a legend in Lexington and at Union University for her basketball performances, but few knew about her passion for the great outdoors. She is one of the best basketball players to ever play for Lexington High School and went on to be a star at Union University. She is now a club director for the Boys & Girls Club of Jackson. During spring break she took her dad L.A. Pearson crappie fishing on the Tennessee River. Mr. Pearson proud to sit a watch her fish just as he used to watch her play basketball. He still cheers for her when she catches fish just as he did when she made 3-point jump shots. April grew up fishing and playing basketball with her brothers in rural Lexington. As time went on she turned her skill set to a career of changing the lives of youth that cross her path at the Boys & Girls Club. Being a competitive person by nature April expects the best of all those around her including her club members as well as her peers. Consequently, she carries her drive of excellence to her passion for the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee. PHOTO IS APRIL PEARSON WITH A STRING OF CRAPPIE AND CATFISH.

HELP IS HERE:

THE AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN

Help is on the way, in fact, by the time you read this it is here! Faster vaccine distribution reaching every community in America, including those who have too often been afterthoughts in any health crisis. Continued help for the unemployed. Targeted small business relief. Health care for more people in desperate need of coverage now, especially, during a pandemic from which many have lost jobs and health insurance. Housing and food assistance for those in need who have been left behind by previous recovery plans. A serious jumpstart to foster economic recovery, including-of course- those direct economic relief checks to every American family making under $ 150,000/year. These and more are arriving via the American Rescue Plan, passed by Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden. Our own state and community are benefitting directly and immediately from these investments in our future. An estimated 14.5 million in direct aid is headed to Jackson. The assistance to our city will help ensure that we do not have to cut back police, fire, sanitation, and other critical services. We will not have to delay plans to resurface and repair streets and sidewalks or purchase new police cars.

And Your Point is . . . small change the Write Way

By Myrtle Russell For several years beginning back in 2005, I wrote weekly small change health education articles for the West Tennessee Examiner. Unless you’ve been on a different planet for the last 15 years, you know that things haven’t gotten any better when it comes to general health and wellness in this country. They are worse. Having spent over four decades in the health field, three of them in health promotion, it’s safe to say it’s my calling and you never quit a calling, you do it until you can’t. So I’m happy to bring my small change the Write Way column to the CrimeSeen and hope it will do three things for the reader: 1) Increase your knowledge about health topics; 2) Change your attitude about taking charge of your health; and 3) Influence behavioral change, one small change at a time. With the CrimeSeen’s publisher/owner’s recent scare with diabetes, I figured it’s a good place to start.

Facts About Type 2 Diabetes

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than 34 million Americans have diabetes (about 1 in 10), and approximately 90-95% of them have Type 2 Diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes most often develops in people over age 45, but more and more children, teens, and young adults are also developing it. What Causes Type 2 Diabetes? Insulin is a hormone made by your pancreas that acts like a key to let blood sugar into the cells in your body for use as energy. If you have Type 2 Diabetes, cells don’t respond normally to insulin so your pancreas makes more insulin to try to get cells to respond. When your pancreas can’t keep up, your blood sugar rises and sets the stage for Type 2 Diabetes. High blood sugar is damaging to the body and can cause other serious health problems, such as heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease.

Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes symptoms often develop over several years and can go unnoticed. If you have any of the following diabetes symptoms, make the small change and see your doctor about getting your blood sugar tested. If you don’t have a primary care doctor, go to a walk-in clinic to get tested: Urinate (pee) a lot, often at night Are very thirsty Lose weight without trying Are very hungry Have blurry vision Have numb or tingling hands or feet Feel very tired Have very dry skin Have sores that heal slowly Have more infections than usual

Type 2 Diabetes Risk Factors

Because symptoms can be hard to spot, it’s important to know the risk factors for Type 2 Diabetes. You’re at risk for developing type 2 diabetes if you: Have prediabetes Are overweight Are 45 years or older Have a parent, brother, or sister with type 2 diabetes Are physically active less than 3 times a week Have ever had gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) or given birth to a baby who weighed more than 9 pounds Are African American, Hispanic/Latino American, American Indian, or Alaska Native (some Pacific Islanders and Asian Americans are also at higher risk) Make the small change to find out if you are at risk for Type 2 Diabetes. Go to https://diabetes.org/diabetes-risk/tools-know-your-risk and take the risk test. It only takes a minute. The Care You Get Is The Care You Give

This past weekend I had a health emergency that will change my life forever. For the past few months or so I have been experiencing things that I equated to be just growing old. I began to become easily irritated, a lot. Being in a stressful job dealing with all types of people on a daily basis I thought “well that’s part of your job description.” I wear eyeglasses and I began to notice that my vision was better without the glasses well I chalk that up to being ready for a new eyeglass prescription since it’s been a couple of years since my last check up. A couple of small rashes on my leg that I couldn’t get rid of was another indicator. Are used alcohol pads all kinds of disinfected creams and nothing seem to work. Then there was the frequent urinating. I was going to the bathroom every 30 to 45 minutes day and night I couldn’t put it together what was causing me to do that. Not only was I urinating frequently but I was also suffering from severe dehydration. I was drinking more than a gallon of water at night or juice or soda to try and quince my thirst. Finally at my wits end, contacted my doctor who advised that I come in and have a urine lab done. The next day he called the nurse called and said I need to come here for a blood lab they saw something in my urine that they were concerned about. A few hours latter, I was parading around the house threatening to disown two of my youngest grandkids and their mother - easily irritated- when my phone rang and it was THE DOCTOR! “Your blood sugar was 679 and I need you to get to the emergency room as soon as possible.” That was a very sobering message and by the time I made it to the emergency room my blood sugar was over 900. Thanks to my veterans administration lab technician the information he provided. He braced me for the worst while also Sharing the trials of his experience with the same illness. Thanks to the doctors, nurses and administrative staff at Jackson Madison County General Hospital it took two days but they got me stabilized and back to normal or as normal as I’ll ever be again. I’ll turn 58 in a couple of months- I if the good Lord say the same- and my gift to myself Will be better health. Peace 03-25-21 CSENEWS P.11

What Putting People First Looks Like!

In my last article, I wrote about getting ready. Much has happened since then as we have had an arctic blast, school closures due to weather, and Spring Break. It’s a great day to be in Jackson Tennessee.” ~Dr. Marlon King These were Dr. King’s first words out of his mouth when he gave his Superintendent’s report in September of 2020. Barely two months on the job and the school board was beginning to understand what he meant by putting people first. A lot has happened since then as there have been several new additions to the school board due to the August elections. There have also been two additional appointees from the county commission due to resignations. I attended a school board meeting in February of 2021 at Madison Academic where the students had placed their artwork on display in the lobby area. The Madison Academic choir was to give their first live performance since last March. In a classy move of support and recognition, Dr. King and his leadership team moved off the stage and sat in the theater. Chairman Johnson and the school board followed suit so that the students could perform to an audience in front of them. The appreciation was obvious from all involved in the meeting. Commitment leads to confidence and positive outcomes! This upcoming fall not only will students have the opportunity to attend two new high schools; a refurbished JCM and a new Madison Academic they will have a third new option as well. The district is changing the name of its Cyber School and calling it Jackson Academic STEAM Academy or (JASA). I think it can be said that the school board is serious about their new slogan; “Best by any measure!” “If kids can’t read, they can’t comprehend…” Johnson said. “Literacy is really, really key in moving our district forward.” ~School Board Chairman Pete Johnson Leadership makes a difference and when the school board and the superintendent work together with the interests of the students in mind, I hope that all stakeholders and the community are taking note of what is happening. I am proud to be a part of the winning team at JMCSS and looking forward to how students respond to the opportunities. The magic happens in the classroom and success comes from a commitment to who the students see in the mirror!

Our community will benefit thanks to the leadership of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in crafting the American Rescue Plan and shepherding it through Congress. We also owe thanks to our own Congressional Representatives Steve Cohen and Bob Cooper for supporting this essential rescue and recovery package. Critics of the plan have complained that it is too far-reaching and provides too much assistance. However, they have entirely missed the urgency-- and the opportunity-- of this moment for national leadership. We are better off today, and will be better off tomorrow, because we met this moment of challenge and stepped up with bold, fair, and decisive action for our families’ and communities’ future.
