A VIRTUAL TURKEY HUNTÊ
West Tennessee OUTDOORS
Brothers, Chase and Hayden McCuan woke up at 4:30 A.M. on April 1st to go turkey hunting in Madison County only to have the best day of their lives. It was a rainy day, but it did not deter them from with Ray Jones heading out to their favorite spot for some fun in the SEND THOSE PHOTOS TO numberonecoach@hotmail.com field.Ê or 731-694-8614. Chase is a seasoned turkey hunter, but Hayden had never harvested a bearded Tom. When they finally got set up and daylight appeared they had decoys in place and heard gobblers in the far off distance.Ê After a while they heard a hoot owl hooting and some how it sparked the interest of some gobblers who then gobbled back. Chase decided to use his slate call and yelped a few times and things begin to get interesting. After he called a few more times they begin to cut him off and aggressively call back thinking other Toms were in their territory. Suddenly they saw a big turkey and before they could get a shot off another two appeared right behind him and it was on.Ê The brothers agreed on which turkey each one would shoot while sitting quietly in the blind trying not to spook them. After the turkeys went toward the decoys they counted down to zero and made the harvest at the same time. Many hunters never get a chance to see a turkey strutting but they were lucky enough to see three doing it at the same time.Ê If you have never seen a turkey strut it is definitely one of the most thrilling and spectacular events in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee. Not only did Chase get his gobbler but little brother Hayden got his first ever Tom in what was a double memory of a lifetime. So when you get ready for some adventure be sure to takeÊ a kid along in hope of exposing him/her to something new in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee.Ê Photo are Chase and Hayden McCuan and their turkeys.

Lane College Host Rural Tennessee Gubernatorial Forum By Bill Marable April 17, 2018 - JACKSON, Tenn — Lane College hosted their first ever Rural Tennessee Gubernatorial Forum Tuesday night on it’s campus in east Jackson. The locally televised forum featured several candidates running for governor who spoke for a little more than an hour about their campaign platforms and how they will address problems and issues voters in rural Tennessee experience everyday. Moderated by former WBBJ-TV7 news personality, Kelly McCalister, Republicans Randy Boyd and Bill Lee and Democrats Karl Dean and Craig Fitzhugh stood on the stage of the Chambers- McClure Center and addressed a packed auditorium on issues facing rural Tennessee. With a backdrop of blue adorned with three stars representing the three divisions of the state, the candidates went back and forth on several issues such as workforce development and education. “Tuesday night’s gubernatorial debate at Lane College marked yet another milestone in our continuing journey toward academic success and our increased immersion in civic engagement,” said Lane President Dr. Logan Hampton. “Our students witnessed, firsthand, our democracy at work; while at the same time, thousands of Tennesseans across the state were made aware of the curriculum and character that is Lane College, as evidenced by the huge surge in our website visits during and following the debate. We are honored and humbled to have been selected to host the forum and profoundly appreciate the presence of each candidate who participated. To each of them, we wish continued success.”

Friends of the Library Present Redemption: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Last 31 Hours Jackson, TN-) Please join the Friends of the Library on Wednesday, April 25 for a reception and program beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Main Jackson Madison County Library. The author, Joseph Rosenbloom, will present his book Redemption: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Last 31 Hours which chronicles the time when Dr. King arrived in Memphis at 10:38 a.m., April 3 until he is fatally shot at 6:01 on April 4, 1968. In a larger sense it portrays King’s urgent initiative to revive his non-violent civil rights movement as he embarks on a quest to end poverty in America. Joseph Rosenbloom is an award-winning journalist who has been a staff reporter for the Boston Globe, an investigative reporter for Frontline, and a senior editor for Inc. magazine. He has written for the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, American Prospect, among other publications and lives in Newton, Massachusetts. Mr. Rosenbloom is originally from Jackson, Tennessee where he attended public schools. His parents were Joseph and Janice Rosenbloom (later Riddler) and were the proprietors of Rosenbloom’s, a clothing store on E. Lafayette St. Mr. Rosenbloom said, “I now have the opportunity to return to my hometown, to talk about my book and Dr. King and to renew my connections to Jackson and in that way is a turn of events that I could not possibly have imagined those summers long ago.” This event is in conjunction with the celebration of the 50 th anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Friends of the Library Presentation, Wednesday, April 25, 2018, Reception at 6 p.m., program at 6:30, Board Room at Main Jackson Madison County Library, 433 E. Shortage of guards eyed after South Carolina prison riot lasted for hours and left 7 dead THE DEADLIEST PRISON RIOT IN THE U.S. IN THE PAST 25 YEARS WAS LIKELY SET OFF BY DISPUTES OVER TERRITORY AND CONTRABAND. byÊKalhan RosenblattÊ/ÊApr.17.2018 - NBCNews.com Kadejia Gadson spent Sunday evening frantically texting her brother, a prisoner in South Carolina’s Lee Correctional Institution. She had just seen photos on Facebook posted by inmates with contraband phones that appeared to show her 24-year-old brother, Damonte Marquez Rivera (right), lying in a pool of blood. Rivera often sent her Snapchats and texts from his own smuggled phone, so Gadson hoped he would respond quickly. “Please reply you’re OK,” she wrote. But as more photos were posted from inside the maximum-security prison showing rapidly escalating fights and bloodied bodies strewn on the floor, Gadson’s dread mounted. By the time authorities brought the prison under control, seven hours after the clashes began and a couple of hours after the photos of Rivera were posted online, he and six other inmates were dead. “He sat there for two hours on the prison floor before he finally got help,” said Gadson, 18, who lives in Georgetown, South Carolina. “Nobody deserves that, no matter what happened.” The brawls, which also left 17 inmates injured, were likely set off by disputes over territory and contraband, authorities said. The violence was so difficult to stop in part because the prison is severely understaffed: There were just four officers on duty for the 250 to 260 inmates in the dorm where the fighting broke out, according to South Carolina Department of Corrections Director Bryan Stirling. The shortage of corrections officers is a problem across the South Carolina state prison system, which has led to an uptick in violence in recent years, according to reports and prison reform advocates. Lee Correctional Institution, which houses the state’s most violent criminals, has a staff shortage of 28 percent, which means officers are working overtime to fill the gaps, Stirling said at a news conference on Monday. According to The State, a newspaper based in Columbia, South Carolina, there areÊabout 650 vacanciesÊfor correctional staff statewide. Amid this staffing shortage,Ê12 prisoners were killed by fellow inmatesÊlast year in South Carolina’s prisons, according to The State. That’s up from five inmates in 2016 and three in 2015. The South Carolina Department of Corrections did not immediately respond to a request for this year’s numbers. On Sunday evening, handmade knives were the weapon of choice at Lee in what The Associated Press said wasÊthe deadliest prison riot in the United States in 25 years. By the time it was over, bloody bodies were stacked on ”top of each other, like some macabre woodpile,” one inmate told the AP. Prison guards followed protocol by backing out and asking for support, the AP reported. After several hours, SWAT teams entered and the inmates surrendered. But that was too late for Rivera, the youngest of the six inmates who were killed. At 4 a.m. on Monday, Gadson said the prison called her family to tell them of her brother’s death. “It really hurts, and now it’s hard to cry because it’s hard to believe,” she said. “I probably won’t get it until I see him.” Rivera was serving a life sentence on a murder conviction. Regardless of his past, Gadson said, her brother deserved to be safe in prison. “The night before we were talking about seeing each other,” Gadson said. “It’s sad the next time I’ll see him is him in a casket.”
