MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 28-year-old store clerk is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a teen accused of stealing a beer from a convenience store. According to the arrest affidavit, obtained by WREG, Anwar Ghazali, a clerk at the Top Stop Shop, chased Dorian Harris, 17, as he walked away from the store at the corner of Springdale and Howell in Hyde Park Thursday after stealing a beer, then shot him from behind. Harris’ body wasn’t found until two days later next to Sarah Patton’s house, a few yards away. “He didn’t have to kill him, you know?” she said. Patton said she looked out her window when she heard the shooting, but didn’t seeÊGhazali or Harris. “I didn’t see anybody running or anything, so I didn’t think anymore about it,” she said. According to court documents, a witness told police Ghazali walked back into the store after the shooting and said, “I think I shot him.” But Ghazali never called police. Pattan tells WREG she had no idea Harris’ body laid next to her home for days until investigators told her Saturday. “I didn’t see it,” she said. “If I knew that it was back there, I would have called the folks before now.” Police say the shooting was caught on camera and that Harris was never reported missing. The owner of the store declined an interview. Ghazali is charged with first-degree murder after admitting to police he shot at Harris several times, according to the arrest affidavit. He will face a judge Monday morning. Harris’ family will have a candlelight vigil in the 2100 block of Howell Street at 7 p.m. Sunday night.

Former pastor pleads guilty to sexual battery of child March 28, 2018Ê- W B B J 7 E y e w i t n e s s N e w s GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn. — A former pastor at a Gibson County church pleaded guilty this week to aggravated sexual battery of a child. Court documents show James Marcus (right), 72, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated sexual battery of a child younger than 13 years old. As part of the plea agreement, Marcus will serve eight years in the Tennessee Department of Correction and must register as a sex offender for life. Marcus entered the plea Monday, according to court documents. Marcus served as a pastor at Fairview Church of Christ north of Milan. He was arrested on the charges in May 2016 and admitted to investigators that he inappropriately touched a child over the course of four years until the victim was 10 years old, according to the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office.

Body found inside car off East Chester Street identified A body found inside a vehicle off East Chester Street near John Williams Road, Monday, has been identified. LaSean Randle, (right) a 26-year-old black male from Jackson, was discovered inside the vehicle, which was upside down in a creek. The Jackson Police Department received a call around 8 a.m., Monday. The vehicle and body matches the description of a person and vehicle that were reported missing to Jackson police on March 29. The body will be sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Nashville to determine the identity and cause of death.

Bells assistant police chief charged CONT’D FROM PAGE 1

“From this point, our deputies arrived and Chief [Roger] Jenkins with the Bells Police Department requested that our C.I.D. division investigate the incident,” Crockett County Sheriff Troy Klyce said. Deputies found enough evidence to warrant the arrest of Ligon. Later that night, Ligon turned himself in to the Crockett County Sheriff’s Office without incident and posted bond 12 hours later. “Just a no-contact order, not an order of protection or anything. It’s just a standard judge’s order on any domestic assault case,” Sheriff Klyce said. Authorities say Ligon has been in law enforcement for more than 20 years with no prior charges or previous disciplinary action against him. Ligon will finish remaining reports with the police department, but he is placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.

Milan police arrest 4 men in 2 separate drug busts March 28, 2018Ê- MILAN, Tenn. — Four people are behind bars after two separate drug busts in Milan. Police say they found a total of $5,000, six firearms and a large amount of marijuana. Milan Police Chief Bobby Sellers says the first happened last Thursday when one of his officers spotted something suspicious. “He got out to do a stop with the person and saw some drug paraphernalia, and he knew it came from the man’s residence,” Sellers said. Sellers says police searched the house on Park Avenue. “They came back and searched the premises and wound up making two arrests. One was a Cortez Jackson and the second was a Timothy Finch,” Sellers said. Timothy Finch, 50, and Cortez Jackson, 24, are facing several drug and gun charges. Inside the home police say they found marijuana, guns and a large amount of cash. Sellers says these weren’t just regular guns. “There were two pistols, then there were two that were like AK-47s,” Sellers said. Thanks to a tip, Milan officers did another drug raid the next day, this time on Creswell Street. “Again found marijuana, firearms, scales and other items, baggies, things that are common when you go into a house where they are distributing marijuana,” Sellers said. Kenneth Cook, 50, and Londra Hicks, 25, were arrested. All four suspects are behind bars with bonds ranging from $3,000 to $20,000. Chief Sellers says his team is being proactive in Milan and they investigate every tip submitted. “If your name comes up on one of these tips, we are going to come through your house and make it hard for you to do business in Milan,” Sellers said.

Madison County man dies after being stabbed in his home March 31, 2018 -MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — Past a gated driveway, a team of law enforcement filled a residence, investigating a brutal murder. “This morning about 5:56, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office received a call concerning a stabbing of a black male about 52 years old,” said Madison County Sheriff’s Office spokesman, Tom Mapes. Officials say EMS was called to the residence and then rushed the man to Jackson Madison County Hospital. We have several leads and we’re pursuing that as we speak,” Mapes said. No word from officials as to a suspect or a motive, but they do say that they need your help, looking for any information that could lead to an arrest in this crime. WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News got a call from an Eyewitness News Tipster earlier this Saturday evening, who says she believes the incident to have been a home invasion. That information has not been confirmed by authorities. If you have any information on this incident, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office urges you to call them, Crime Stoppers or the TBI immediately.

Obituaries BETTY CAROLYN HAWTHORNE June 13, 1937 - March 22, 2018 She was united in holy matrimony to Willie J. Hawthorne, Sr. in 1957, and there were six children born out of this union. ÊShe later attended nursing school and obtained her nurse’s license. Because of her love for people, she worked many years as a nurse caring for the sick.Ê Upon retiring, Willie and Betty relocated to the state of Tennessee where they became members of New Holy Temple church of God in Christ in Milan, Tennessee.Ê Betty served faithfully as the Head of the Women’s Department for many years.ÊEarly on the morning of March 22, 2018, with the love of her life right there in the room, the Lord called her home peacefully in her sleep.Ê She had finished her course, and it was time to take her rest.Ê We find peace in knowing that she is with the Lord.

Matlock recognized as Advanced Level Instructor Jackson, Tenn. – Lisa Matlock, (right) an Associate Professor of Computer Information Technology at Jackson State, is recognized as an Advanced Level Instructor this year through our course instructing partner, Cisco Networking Academy. This global award is reserved for instructors who receive the highest student evaluations in their classes throughout the year, and she is one of only 200 recipients for the year. Matlock has worked at Jackson State for almost 27 years, beginning her career in OIT (Office of Information Technology) before transitioning to teaching. She did not expect this award, but says she is glad to be on the right track with her students. “It really lets me know that the classroom is my happy place and appreciate that maybe I can and am making a difference.”

198 ENSNARED IN JACKSONVILLE (FL) FOOD STAMP FRAUD TOTALING $3.7M BUSINESSES SWAPPED SNAP BENEFITS FOR CASH, EVEN DRUGS ByÊNews4Jax JACKSONVILLE, Fla.Ê- SheriffÊMike WilliamsÊannounced Tuesday the results of a multi-agency, undercover investigation into the exchangeÊofÊSupplemental Nutrition Assistance ProgramÊbenefits for cashÊand, in at least one case, cocaine. FromÊ2012 toÊ2017, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office detectives, working with federal and state agencies, documented more than 22,000 fraudulentÊtransactionsÊinvolving $3.7 million in taxpayer money. “These people are sellingÊor stealingÊmoney from hardworking taxpayers right here in our community, and they are abusing a program that is meant to help people,” Williams said. Williams saidÊthat during Operation Half-Back,Êundercover officers personally observed 115 individuals in 390 fraudulent transactions from February to July 2017. Attorney General Pam BondiÊsaid her office will be prosecuting those felony cases. “These schemes are very active in our state, and I look forward to my office holding these defendants accountable,” Bondi said in a statement, applauding law enforcement for their efforts. “It is because of their diligence and hard work that this scheme was put to an end.” Investigators said those with SNAP/EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) cards would give their PIN number to the buyer, and that money would then be deposited into their accounts. Williams said, in most cases, the food-stamp recipient receivedÊ50 cents per $1 of SNAP benefitÊused. Each transaction was recorded. The operation originally focused on operators of brick-and-mortar stores, but investigators learned that many of the perpetrators became mobile business — such as meat, seafood and produce vendors — so they could apply to the U.S Department of Agriculture to accept SNAP benefits. Williams said they sold very little merchandise, as most of their volume was exchanging SNAP benefits for cash. Those accused include 21 people considered recruiters or intermediaries charged with organized schemes to defraud and public assistance fraud. There were also 177 people accused of sellingÊtheir benefits who face charges of public assistance fraud — most of those felonies because the transaction involved more than $200. The Sheriff’s Office said 161 warrants are still waiting to be issued.Ê “Food stamp trafficking steals from Florida’s hardworking taxpayers,”ÊBondiÊsaid in a statement.Ê”The SNAP/EBT program is designed to provide services to the most vulnerable among us and for anyone to take advantage of this system is shameful.” The Office of Public Benefits Integrity told News4Jax that if the people arrested are found guilty of fraud, they’ll be required to pay that money back.Ê “It’s very frustrating because the people who actually have a need for the EBT cards are getting shorted,” said taxpayer Hugh Hyatt. Jasmine Coleman, who recently applied for SNAP benefits, said it’s upsetting knowing people are abusing the program that’s meant to help families like hers. “To support my daughters and me, I’m a server and I don’t make that much and food is starting to get very expensive,” she said.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis peace activist has died after falling victim to the very crime she was trying to stop. A family friend confirms Choosey Parker died at Regional One Hospital Tuesday.

Parker and her boyfriend were shot March 18 when they left Purple Haze nightclub Downtown. Frank Tuggle, 43, of Memphis also is charged with aggravated assault.
