By Bill Marable Meet Lewis Jenkins. He’s a 29 year-old Humboldt native who until recently had only minor altercations with law enforcement; i.e. a few traffic stops and the such. Several months ago, according to Lewis’ mother Angela Mathis, he began displaying signs of mental instability. Mathis says her son began doing odd things like running around in the yard, rolling in the grass, or even, in more extreme cases, banging his head on the pavement. During one episode about a month ago, Mathis claims that Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was called to help subdue Lewis. That’s when things went terribly awry for Lewis.

And Sutton, a patrol officer in Mason and a lieutenant in Gallaway, was able to get over $20,500, the release says. The Comptroller’s Office says that investigators found that the two submitted timesheets that reflected them working for the two departments at the same time, ending shifts and starting another in the other town in the same minute, and having hours worked when they had not reported they were in-service to either county dispatchers. Investigators also say that the two also used city vehicles without permission, with Sutton even allegedly having his personal vehicle towed to his home in 2020 and the Gallaway Police Department being charged for the tow.

Nashville - Police responded to the Comfort Suites at Rivergate Mall on March 27th in reference to a fight in progress. Upon arrival, many people were walking around outside, yelling at each other.

The entire group was related to one another, and reportedly were playing a card game when 27-year-old Shakayla Edwards accused her husband, Jerry Edwards, of cheating during the game.

He says she did strike him in the face multiple times during the assault. Family members confirmed she had been drinking heavily prior to the assault.

EARLY VOTING WILL BEGIN APRIL 13 AND CONTINUES UNTIL APRIL 28. TUESDAY MAY 3, 2022 IS THE STATE AND COUNTY PRIMARY ELECTION DAY.

State Representative monitoring interstate I 40 construction State Representative Chris Todd, (R), who represents Madison County in the State Legislature, has expressed concerns over construction complaints on Interstate 40. According to Todd Jones Brothers Construction Company, the contractor for the State Department of Transportation, basically owns that section of road right now. “Until they are finished with work on I 40, they are party responsible for everything that’s going on there,” said Todd. Todd believes the paving of the interstate is an issue.

“From the standpoint of how rough the road is and how the paving that you’re having to drive on tosses you left and right and up and down; it’s not in every section of roadway, but there are several areas where motorist, probably the majority of the distance through this construction zone experience that,” said Todd.

Todd said many citizens have contacted his office with concerns about their vehicles being damaged. “The damage we’ve see has been all the way from a cracked windshield, a peck or something that came from or fell off a truck coming in that zone, all the way to missing car parts.” Jones Brothers constitution company is working on a solution to help avoid more damages in future. “Do some profile milling, which means grinding down the bad spots of pavement, and they’re probably going to be moving some barricades out a little bit to get some more space because their profiling machine takes up more than one lane” They want to make sure they can maintain traffic flow through there and they’re going to plan doing this at night.” Todd says if you’ve had any damages to your vehicle, you would need to contact Jones Brothers directly at 615-864-7388. My office can be reached at rep.chris.todd@capitol. tn.gov Or 615-741-7475.

Publisher’s Point - By Bill Marable

Cont’d from page 1 According to Mathis, her son - in his confused state of mind- became combative and law enforcement was summoned to the scene. Mathis says that her son was tazed by law enforcement and arrested. Mathis, who was at work at the time, says she listened on the phone as her son begged for his mother and much to her dismay there was nothing she could do to comfort him. “It broke my heart to hear them struggling with my child and to hear him calling for me and I could not be there for him.” He was arrested and charged with resisting arrest! Several weeks ago, Mathis says Lewis was experiencing another setback and this time he was convinced to go the a local hospital for help. That’s when things went awry again. Again, in an agitated stat, Lewis attempted to lock himself inside a restroom while inside the hospital as staff tried to address his situation. In the ensuing melee, it was reported that Lewis struck a member of the hospital staff and again, Law Enforcement was summoned to the scene. Lewis was arrested and charged with simple assualt! According to Jackson City Court Clerk Daryl Hubbard, Lewis’ case is not unique within the court system. In fact, Hubbard says a person might be surprised at the high number of cases that come through City Court that involve someone who was displaying signs of mental illness or distress. Hubbard says that the overwhelming majority of those cases should never have found their way to City Court; a statement that was supported by Madison County Sheriff, John Mehr.

“Unfortunately”, says Mehr, “in cases like Lewis, instead of arresting and transporting these people to the County Jail, they should be taken to Pathways.”

According to their website, Pathways offers both inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services. Inpatient 24-hour services include mobile crisis, walk-in triage center, psychiatric inpatient unit, detoxification unit, and crisis stabilization unit. Outpatient services include individual and family counseling, intensive outpatient groups for children, adolescents, and adults, medication management, case management, homeless outreach, and individual placement and support/employment services. Individual and intensive outpatient counseling for substance use and co-occurring disorders and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and recovery are also available. There is also a convenient on-site pharmacy for medications prescribed at Pathways or the Lift’s Disease Management Program. A majority of these services are also available via telehealth. Myrtle Russell, former Director of Health Promotion at the West Tennessee Regional Health Department says, “Lewis’ situation is not unique to the West TN area. It mirrors what happens every single day across the country where jails and prisons become holding cells for individuals struggling with mental health issues. And of equal importance is rural areas of the state lack the resources to treat the ever increasing number of patients in need of emergency and follow-up mental health services. Unfortunately there aren’t enough facilities such as Pathways to go around. And the average person doesn’t know what to do when a family member is in crisis so they call 911. Most often law enforcement officers or EMTs who are not trained in mental health crisis intervention show up and if there is any threat of physical harm, the individual is hauled off to jail. Until more dollars are put into mental health training, treatment, and awareness, jails will keep getting paid to label individuals like Lewis “criminals” when in reality, they are “patients” who deserve better. Lord Help.”” Help is on the way! Well... Sort of. Sheriff Mehr says that once the new expansion is completed at the Madison County Criminal Justice Complex, there will be additional beds and medical staff available to primarily address inmates with mental health issues. Might I suggest, that before calling 911 Emergency services for situations involving suspected persons suffering from mental distress, call Pathways and at least create a communications trail to document that your loved one is seeking assistance.

Peace!

Artificial Intelligence And Morality

by: Elvis Rogers 33% of new jobs are for occupations that did not exist 25 years ago. With the decreasing pool of capable workers, the coming decline of the working age population and the emphasis on and need to increase productivity and decrease expenses in the workplace, automation has been the answer for filling in the gaps and escalating the end results. There are pros and cons to this. Displaced workers, workplace anxiety and lack of worker motivation are some of the cons. As for the pros, well often the machine is faster, more precise, and consistent. Another important factor is that a machine has open work availability and never asks for a raise. At the present time automation probably works best in manufacturing and production environments but as we expand it into other areas it raises some concerns. In a production environment automation often uses machines while still requiring humans to offset the short falls. It’s the “deep learning networks” that might be the source of future debates. Man has always used tools to make tasks easier. An example of this is the knife. A knife can be used for many good and productive reasons but it can also be used for unethical reasons, however the knife itself does not dictate it’s own use. A human does that and that human will be responsible for the outcome. In the type of automation that requires machines to mimic human reasoning the line that divides right from wrong has the potential to get blurred. We will encounter this situation soon when the popularity of sel-f driving cars increases. It is estimated that the programming that would have to go into the” brain” of a self-driving car would require millions of what would in effect be moral calculations. Who decides that? For sure it won’t be you. Who will be responsible for the outcome of those decisions? Case in point: You are driving down a three-lane highway and you are behind a truck that is transporting cars. A car rolls off the truck and directly into your path. In a split second a decision must be made and the options are to either hit the car or to swerve left or swerve right. In the left lane is a motorcycle rider and he is wearing a helmet. In the right lane is a motorcycle rider and he is not wearing a helmet. It is true that a computer in the autonomous vehicle can made that decision but will it be one you want to live with? Do you reward the cycle rider that is wearing a helmet because he is obeying the law and punish the helmetless rider, or do you hit the rider that has a helmet because he may have a better chance of survival? There will be millions of these decisions to be made. Do we trust a machine to make them? Do you run over an old lady or a cat? Do you avoid hitting the young man in the crosswalk and instead hit the elderly man? The people that program these cars will have to assign value to various lives in literally millions of such scenarios. It’s not “one size fits all” either. Studies have shown that different cultures sometimes have a differing hierarchy of values. In America saving the life of a young person is seen as more important that saving the life of an elderly person. In the Far East it’s the opposite. The French culture has a preference of saving women over men. Do we want computers making moral decisions? Computers and automated machines are great at providing answers to questions but learning involves both ANSWERING questions and also ASKING them. Artificial intelligence cannot ask the questions that sometimes are needed to be asked. Human minds will have to ask these and many other questions before we go forward. Poetic Expressions CELEBRATING NATIONAL POETRY MONTH

Notes from the Judge

Whitney Rio-Ross (whit.lynn.rioross@gmail.com) was the guest Judge for the Griot Collective of West Tennessee’s Black History Youth Poetry Contest which was held in February and open to students from schools throughout West Tennessee. GCWT, Here are my comments about the winning poems. I hope they can be encouraging to the writers! I guessed the writers’ pronouns based on their names. If i am mistaken in any of those, I Ani Garabedian apologize. Sacred Heart of Jesus High

Too often poets do not think pill bugs enough about sound, but the author of “pill bugs” proves that a phrase’s music can bring Fingers pink and prying words to life, which is especially appropriate against hard edges, I tug for a nature poem. The imagery in this poem is each rock from its bed of mud to marvel at what scurries, simultaneously surprising and clear, a combi- slugs, nation that allows for both play and darkness and aches underneath. in a short poem. An excellent example of these Exoskeletons like candy, many poetic elements, this poem truly sings. the roly-polies clench like fists “Untitled”—This poem carries great emotion- hiding their hearts in their palms. al weight with few words; it communicates through both what it says and withholds. In Sometimes I, too, flashes of vivid imagery, the writer plunges arch my spine towards the us into a scene while the narrative gaps and hellfire grammatical ambiguity allow us to experience and find haven in damper, a disorientation that fits the poem’s topic. darker places, waiting for “when they see us.”. The voice in this poem is either the sun to stutter strong and distinct. When I read it, I hear a real, or the sky to be ripped from complex person pouring out their frustrations inits hinges. a kind of breathlessness. The slang and repetition intensify the powerful imagery, emphasizing the theme at hand. This speaker demands to be heard.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL POEMS:

“My Two Mighty Guys”-I had fun figuring out who these “mighty guys” are as the poem went on. It’s always a delight to be hooked by a poem like that. Along with her clear descriptions and excellent rhyme, the writer manages to make a seemingly simple poem about pets into a touching statement about the bonds we form, “My Four Puppies”--This poem is as fun and playful as the four puppies it describes. With an impressive use of rhyme and meter, the writer shows us what makes these dogs loveable, as well as the ways she cares for them. It’s the kind of poem that reminds me of how lucky I am to have my dog. “I Love You, Tyrin Cox”_We can all say “I love you,” but it’s harder to show that we mean it. This writer clearly explains how and why he loves Tyrin Cox in this poem. The repetition of “I love you” along with the name emphasizes the sincerity. This is the kind of poem I’d want a loved one to write for me.

MIDDLE SCHOOL POEMS:

“I Am Confident and Humble”_The writer of this poem does an excellent job of showing not only the complexity behind the traits of confidence and humility, but also the difficulty of making statements about ourselves. The repetition of “I am confident and humble” next to his statements of uncertainty makes this poem an excellent means of self-reflection. “My Lady”. This poem is a fascinating meditation on memory. Playing on the idea of things “left behind” and moving between the one who remembers and the memory, the writer shows how memory can be at once comforting and elusive. Whitney Rio-Ross

WHEN THEY SEE US.

walk with my fist in the air, head held high as i cry so they see how i really feel shook hands with the man and got killed for no reason, that wasn’t the deal and i can’t be silenced by violence cause i know the ordeal growing up with brown skin, they don’t know how it feel the shiver that goes over yo body when you see red and blue lights in your rear view they don’t know how that feels a uncomfortable feeling when i see a cop that’s how im supposed to feel ? pulled over by a cop he say that im swerving but i haven’t had anything to drink pulled out the car it’s getting physical he don’t care about my words he only see my skin tone so we know how this about to go he got me by my neck not a care in the world about my mental not a care in the world if i can breathe but im not no fool know how this story go top headlines in papers trending on twitter “ black queer killed by a cop” you know how that go played our cards right but still got the end of the stick our people know how that go you got me feeling uneasy but you supposed to protect me how you think thats gone go ? 300 plus years of oppression ? they don’t know how that feel but somehow they made themselves know how it feel you took 300 plus years im asking for 30 mins just to say how we feel but you say in overdoing it, you don’t really wanna know how we feel

I understand that confidence can lead to arrogance believe humble is the way I hope that these traits can have a balance I try to not let one overtake the other I pray for the best in life I am confident and humble
