WOMAN CHARGED AFTER MONTHS-LONG CRIME SPREE: STOLEN RENTAL CAR, PPP FRAUD, MEXICAN RESTAURANT BAWL 06/08/2021 Jason Steen -https://www. scoopnashville.com/ A Nashville woman spent the first half of 2021 living it up in the city… and now she’ll have to face the consequences. 23-year-old Kenoshia Smith reportedly provided fraudulent documents to obtain a PPP loan, drove a 2020 Toyota Camry which she rented for a few days and didn’t return for months, and had a food brawl at Los Toritos, where she smashed a chair through a glass cooler door… and it’s only June.

ONE SPOT FISHING
West Tennessee
OUTDOORS
I went fishing on the Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge years ago with with Ray Jones Homer Kinnon and we settled in on Cutoff Lake. When we got to the lake Send photos to: Mae Dell Cason was already there sitting in a folding chair with a 5 gal- numberonecoach@hotmail.com or 731-694-8614 lon bucket by her side. We stopped by and hollered at her for a moment before we put our boat into the water. She showed us what she had already caught which were a few nice fish. So we hit the lake in our boat with all confidence that if she was doing that well sitting in one spot we would fill up the cooler in the boat. After we fished for about two and a half hours we went by the see how she was coming along. She was coming along alright she had a bucket full and we hardly had enough fish for just one of us. It was a lesson that I had to learn over the years that you can sometimes stay in one spot and catch more fish than someone fishing all over the lake (like we did). On Friday I fished with my good friend Pat and he told me that his uncle fished in this one particular spot on this huge lake and always catch fish. I decided to follow that routine and landed 32 super nice blue gills. So before you fish all over the lake give one spot fishing a chance first.

June 5, 2021 Ashley Luningham - wbbjtv.com JACKSON, Tenn. — Jackson Police Department responded to a shooting in Muse Park Friday night. What started Friday evening as a kickball event for the community turned tragic with gunshots. People were playing kickball at a local community event in Muse Park, when attendees say they heard gunshots and started running to their cars. A witness at the kickball event, Nikita Jones, says they heard several gunshots from the parking lot. “Where everyone was parked at and they just started shooting. Everybody started running and I saw one guy running to the right toward the school. I heard he collapsed,” Jones said. Jones says she remembers vividly the sound of gunshots. “All I heard was a lot of pow, pow, pow,” Jones said. Jackson Police Department responded to the call around 8:20 Friday night, and found 18-year-old Tanyarris Maxwell shot and lying on the ground in the parking lot beside the kickball field. Maxwell was taken to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. He passed away from his injuries soon after reaching the hospital. The homicide is still under investigation by the Jackson Police Department. Anyone with information regarding the shooting can contact the JPD at 731-425-8400 or Crime Stoppers at 731-424-TIPS (8477). EXP LICENSE, DRIVING UNDER INFLUENCE

And Your Point is . . .
A Memorial Life
I walked around the court square in the town where I was born and raised. My family name seems to be on all the war memorials. There is the landmark statue of Col. Rogers (Civil War) and on the other side of the square the is the name of the other Col. Rogers (my brother) and my nephew, his son - father and son purple heart recipients .At intervals around the square are memorials of all the other wars and once again they bear the names of Rogers family members killed in action. I recognize the names. They are my kin. I don’t know if I’m related to the Battle of Corinth hero but my brother played an important role in the Gulf War and was friends with many of the figures from that war that you would know. Best I can tell I’ve had family in every war and they fought for the United States in all but one of them. My daddy was a WWII veteran and it was a topic of pride for him as it was for most of his generation. It’s those guys I think about the most as I walk the square. When I was younger I made it a point to talk to as many of these WWII vets as possible while they still had their mind and memory. I knew they were a dwindling resource. .Almost without fail the first thing they mention when they talk about WWII were things we take so much for granted. They talk about the food, the clothes, the travel. The actual fighting stories seem to come later if they come at all. They speak in generalities about the fighting. They don’t want to remember it. There is not a lot of bragging. They assume that we know what hell looks like. When I was a kid my first paying job was at the National Guard Armory. The 1st sergeant there had been in Pattons 3rd Army. The other person working there had fought in some other unit in Europe. It was this other person that told me that he had never owned a machine- made shirt until he joined the army. Until then all of his shirts had been made at home. Many had been made from flour sacks or whatever was available to his mother. You see most of the men from where I come from were poorly educated, had just lived through near starvation during the great depression and had never been farther away from home than the distance they could ride on a mule .TVA didn’t come to North Mississippi until the mid thirties and didn’t reach where many of them lived until much later. It was a time of bleak conditions and the army offered them the best chance to change that. It was an opportunity. I stop and sit on one of the benches that still circle the square. They are the same benches that these men sat on. The benches have never moved or changed. For a moment I feel connected in some way. I sit on the bench and all the wars engulf my thoughts. I was never wounded, or killed, or taken prisoner, nor did I leave my family behind to go sleep in a muddy field somewhere in France......but many of them did. I am alive and somewhat free and that makes the Memorial Holiday just one day in a memorial life. I’m glad I stopped and thought about it. I will not gripe about having to work on Monday. I should never gripe about anything again. By: Elvis Rogers - Columnist elvisrogers@yahoo.com

HUMBOLDT MOTHER REMEMBERS SON ON NATIONAL GUN VIOLENCE AWARENESS DAY
The first Friday in June is National Gun Violence Awareness Day, a day of remembrance for survivors and victims of gun violence. Many wear ORANGE on this day to remember lives lost to gun violence and to raise awareness about this public health crisis. Every day, more than 100 Americans are killed with guns and more than 230 are shot and wounded. These survivors are faced with a life-long process of physical and emotional healing. The color orange also symbolizes human life, which I feel man has no right to take from another. I found out about this National Holiday a few years ago. Another thing is orange was one of my sons (Rontavious Maurice McKinley 10/11/2016) favorite colors as well #LLM. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and survivors all over the world. For the victims from me to you this battle is for the Lord.Trust the Lord -vengeance is the Lord’s and He will repay thee! I JUST GOTTA SAY IN ADVANCE; THANK YOU JESUS FOR FIGHTING OUR BATTLES. Cont’d from page 7 You can catch Jonathan Graves in the background of the show playing keys, serenading viewers with melodious guitar chords, or simply hyping up jokes as DC Young Fly historically roasts a fan. You can witness Craig Graves through his work behind the scenes capturing the show’s most magical moments on and off the stage. Nevertheless, the 85 South Show is ushering in a monumental shift in the genre of black comedy. As an art form, the show has surpassed jokes, inviting critical dialogue with towering black artists and entertainers. From art to even political activism, the 85 South Show is sparking a new wave that is giving black comedy a multifaceted reach through the emergence of digital media. More importantly, the show is owned and operated by the crew. This offers them the freedom to be bold and unapologetic in their creativity and craft. If nothing else, The show exemplifies the importance of black media and the duty we have to protect it at all costs. As we live in a day in age where black entertainment is exploited and commodified to enrich white corporate companies, The 85 South Show exemplifies how black comedy through digital media must be committed to protecting the ability to express our culture on our own terms in its most raw and spontaneous forms. So the next time you are scrolling through YouTube, grab a drink, or maybe even break open a crisp honey backwood and let the laughs roll to the 85 South Show.

Mo’Nique got a mixed response when she voiced her opinion that Black women need to stop wearing hair bonnets and scarves in public.
What She Said! Mo’nique never told y’all we weren’t Queens if we
The Oscar-winning Precious actress shared an Instagram video in which she revealed her shock at seeing so many ‘young sistas’ dressed casually while walking through an airport in Mississippi over the weekend. ‘Wearing head bonnets, scarfs, slippers pajamas, [and] blankets wrapped around them,’ Mo’Nique said. She added: ‘I’ve been seeing it not just at the airport. I’ve been seeing it at the store, at the mall… When did we lose our pride in representing ourselves? When did we slip away of let me make sure I’m presentable when I leave my home? [sic].’ The 53-year-old actress stated that her statements weren’t coming from a place of ‘judgement’ but more a ‘place of love’, and felt compelled to speak out as she’s been honoured with the title ‘aunty’. Mo’Nique added that she wasn’t telling women to always wear a full face of make-up or a lace front wig, but said: ‘All I’m saying is could you please comb your hair.’
wear a bonnet, pajamas, and slippers out in public. She actually repeated several times she’s not saying that and even spoke with love and called us Queens... What she did say was care about how you are representing yourself. Fix your hair, get dressed etc. Our mothers taught us this! She’s just old school. Our mothers told us don’t walk out the house looking like “who shot John” and make sure you wash your ass and your draws are clean. Now everyone wants to act like she said something horrible! What is wrong with y’all that you can’t learn from your own moms and aunties in the community without being offended. Take that jewel and be thankful with ya fake mad asses. - Tiana Harris Mo’nique was on point. PERIODT!!! I for one can say my momma taught me everything she spoke on. And I never ever saw my mom out with house shoes or a scarf on her head. I’m not saying I’ve never worn one before but the truth is the truth. Beverly Collins What she said is true. I don’t care how many people were offended by her comment. She told the truth. Your parents or grandparents should have told you the same thing. When we were in school, our teachers told us the same thing about personal hygiene, looking your best when you are out in public, etc. We learned this and more from our family members, our church members, and our teachers. We listened back then. The problem with today’s youth and young adults is, nobody is telling them anything. Everyone is afraid to say anything. So now we have all of them getting upset when someone states something that they actually need to take ahead to. Gwendolyn Thomas All of this. I think the younger generation have been about shattering the norm. It also depends on how you were raised. What your family values were. Me personally, I say stop policing what women do with their bodies. We don’t know the entire reason behind their decisions. Health, funds, mood, etc. I am not stepping out in a Bonnet unless it is a last resort to get meds after a surgery. Otherwise, I’m dressed. Rosanna Drumgoole

FINNA
by Nate Marshall These poems consider the brevity and disposability of Black lives and other oppressed people in our current era of emboldened white supremacy, and the use of the Black vernacular in America’s vast reserve of racial and gendered epithets. Finna explores the erasure of peoples in the American narrative; asks how gendered language can provoke violence; and finally, how the Black vernacular, expands our notions of possibility, giving us a new language of hope. WOMAN CHARGED Cont’d from page 1
Kenoshia Smith was booked into the Metro Nashville Jail on June 7th at 3:12 p.m. on multiple outstanding warrants. One of the warrants, charging her with felony vandalism, details that on January 26 she and other females were involved in a large brawl at Los Toritos Nashville, which officers say left the business “in total disarray” with broken glass, chairs, tables were upside down, and with more food on the floor than in their stomachs. Officers later reviewed video footage and identified Smith as one of the women, and as the one that smashed a chair through the glass cooler door. A felony warrant was issued for her arrest, and the investigation continues into the actions of the others. Intria Ventures confirms they disbursed a PPP loan to Kenoshia Smith in February, and believe the documents to be fraudulent, citing a nail salon business. Their investigation is ongoing. Throughout 2021, Kenoshia has been driving a 2020 Toyota Camry which has been reported as stolen from a car rental company. She admitted to officers she initially rented the car, but then kept it and refused to return it. She is charged with Felony Theft 10K – 60K for the stolen car. Soon after being booked into jail Monday, she was released on a $20,000 bond.
MAN CHARGED AFTER PUNCHING GIRLFRIEND IN FACE, TELLING 911 HER CALL WAS A ‘BUTT DIAL’ THEN FLEEING SCENE
06/07/2021 Jason Steen - https://www. scoopnashville. com/ Rickey Bates (MNPD) A California woman says she was visiting her 39-year-old boyfriend Rickey Bates at his SkyHouse Nashville residence on Saturday when he punched her in the face, causing her to quickly become covered in blood. She called 911 and a call taker heard her pleading for help, but the call suddenly disconnected. When dispatch called back, he told them it was ‘just a butt dial’. When officers arrived, they found her face and hands still covered in blood from the assault. Upon the officer’s initial arrival, Bates had already fled the scene but returned while they were interviewing the victim, his girlfriend. She asked for him to not be present, so they were separated. She said they were in an argument when he just punched her without warning. She states she blacked out for a short period of time but didn’t want him to have to go to jail for it. Bates told police he hit her in the face ‘by mistake’ after they “got into a tussle”, and say “didn’t know she called 911” as the reason he told the 911 operation it was “just a butt dial”. Officers didn’t believe any of his story and took him into custody. Rickey Bates, 39, was booked into the Metro Nashville Jail on June 5th, charged with domestic assault with bodily injury ($2,500 bond) and interference with a 911 call ($1,000 bond). He is free on a $3,500 bond to his SkyHouse Nashville address.
