DOTSON TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Humboldt City Schools recently selected Kiara Dotson as it’s Teacher of the Year. “For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord!” This was definitely not in my plans! I’m forever grateful for this honor! Being a teacher isn’t an easy job, but it’s all worth it. God—I give You all of the Glory forever and ever,” said Dotson.
There are no words to describe the heartache of this week. I’ve tried not to watch the news too much as not to trigger memories from my own traumatic experiences... it didn’t work.
Chandra Maclin is an educator in the Humboldt City School System and mother of two. She is member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and a graduate of Lane College.

MAN SAYS HE KILLED WOMAN FOR DISRESPECT
by: Stuart Rucker -wreg.com Posted: May 31, 2022 MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis man has been convicted of murder after shooting a woman in the head, back and leg in 2019 because she disrespected him. The shooting happened on June 14, 2019, according to the DA’s Office. The victim, 26-year-old Corrisha Teal, was unloading her possessions into her new apartment on Birch Lake Drive while two other female relatives helped her. Witnesses said Terrell Craft, who also lived in the apartment complex, approached the group and looked at them without saying anything. The DA said the victim said something to Craft and began to walk away. Craft, 37, then pulled out a gun and shot her four times. Craft then pointed his gun at three others, took a handgun from Teal’s waist, and fled the scene. Craft called 911 later and told police he killed the victim in self-defense because she had disrespected him in front of others. Teal was taken to the hospital for treatment but did not survive her injuries. Craft has been convicted on three felony counts of aggravated assault and second-degree murder. He is currently being held at Shelby County Jail East and is expected to be sentenced in July 2022.

President Joe Biden signed an executive order on police reform that he hopes will help prevent excessive use of force and encourage officers to intervene in such cases. “Two years ago, the murder of George Floyd exposed for many what Black and Brown communities have long known and experienced – that more must be done to ensure that America lives up to its founding promise of fair and impartial justice for all,” President Biden stated. The President signed the order on May 25, the two-year anniversary of Floyd’s death at the hands of police in Minneapolis. Following the murder conviction of former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin, three other officers were found guilty in federal court of violating Floyd’s civil rights. Prosecutors said the trio stood by while Chauvin pressed his knee into the unarmed 46-year-old’s neck for more than nine minutes. One of the officers involved, Thomas Lane, recently agreed to a plea deal to avoid state prosecution and serve two years in prison. The other two officers involved, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao, face a state trial this summer. “The incident sparked one of the largest social movements this country has ever seen, with calls from all corners to acknowledge the legacy of systemic racism in our criminal justice system and in our institutions more broadly,” administration officials stated prior to Biden signing the executive order. Biden’s action will advance effective, accountable policing and criminal justice practices that will build public trust and strengthen public safety, the White House said. “Police cannot fulfill their role to keep communities safe without public trust and confidence in law enforcement and the criminal justice system,” administration officials wrote in a Fact Sheet. www.blackpressusa.com/president-biden-signs

And Your Point is . . .
#TheyDeserveAFuture
By Chandra Maclin - cont’d from page 1 The fact that we keep experiencing these types of traumatic events, in American schools, is sickening. We should not be afraid to enter the doors of schools in our communities. We pray everyday that our students and staff are safe in our schools, that parents trust in our ability to care for their children while we serve as in loco parentis. Although we train for situations like this, nothing really prepares you for this. I implore you to take the time to read through the following list-all the way to the bottom. Without getting too political, engage in discussions with your circle of friends and family. Then take the time next week to engage with your representatives with real solutions. I don’t believe arming teachers is the solution, but funding for schools must increase and fire arms policies must be adjusted. No matter what,
I am #AlwaysATeacher and because #TheyAreAllMine I will do what I can inspite of the #RepeatedTrauma to seek change for #OurPosterity #TheyDeserveAFuture From Columbine High School to Robb Elementary School - when does it end? Poetic Expressions
Juneteenth
Although its execution Loomed several months away.
Juneteenth’s a celebration of Liberation Day When word of emancipation reached Texas slaves they say. In sorrow were we brought here to till a harvest land. We live and died and fought here ‘Til freedom was at hand.
The Congress was divided. The Cabinet as well. Abe did his best to hide it. And no one did he tell.
They tore apart our families They stole life’s nascent breath. Turned women into mammies And worked our men to death.
Would now have to contend with The Freedman on their land. For slavery had endeth For woman, child and man.
– A Poem By Noah Griffin
They shamed the very nation Which fostered freedom’s birth It died on the plantation Denying man his worth. But greed and misplaced honor Brought crisis to a head And Justice felt upon her The weight of Union Dead. They fought to save a nation. And yet they saved its soul From moral condemnation And made the country whole. But when the war was waning And the battle was in doubt. The soldiers were complaining An many dropping out. There seemed but one solution Which might yet save the day.
He meant to sign an order To deal the South a blow. The Mason Dixon border And the Rebel states below
The time 18 and 63 The first day of the year. But June of 65 would be The time we would hold dear. For that would be when Freedom’s thought First saw full light of day. And justified why men had fought And died along the way. Now every June we celebrate What Lincoln had in mind The day he did emancipate The bonds of all mankind. “This is Our History, This is Our Moment” JMC Branch NAACP Host Freedom Fund Banquet 2022 By CSENews Staff
A near capacity crowd enthusiastically welcomed the return of the in-person Freedom Fund Banquet Sunday night, sponsored by the JMC Branch NAACP. “This is Our History, This is Our Moment” was the theme of the 59th Annual event under-girded by the JMC NAACP Branch which celebrates its centennial
this year. The well received function featured an array of performers and presentations which inspired and informed the attendees. The Freedom Fund Banquet co-chair, Ms. Alicia Brooks called the audience to assembly and then introduced Mr. Javonte Mahone who served as the Master of Ceremony. Mahone ably guided the program which included the Posting of Colors by the Jackson Police Department, followed by the National Anthem and the Negro National Anthem. Mr. Scott Canfield - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints delivered the Invocation. The Welcome and Special Greetings were extended by Dr. Martha Robinson and Attorney Derrick Johnson, National NAACP President. Keeping in the spirit of the Memorial Day Holiday, Freedom Fund co-chair Mr. Dave Carter presented the Salute to Armed Forces and to the 61st U.S. Colored Infantry Regiment. While dining on a delicious meal prepared by the Lane College Catering Service, guests were superbly entertained by the Jackson Children’s and Memphis ACT-SO Gold Award Winner, Mr. Corey Fields. The presentation of awards segment was conducted by Ms. Patricia Porter and Dr. Jerry Woods. Woods recognized the Faith Based Committee Members; Ms. Alicia Brooks, Dr. Claude Bass, Bishop Nathaniel Bond and Rev. Larry Mercer and each member
was presented a special citation paperweight. Ms. Patricia Porter announced the following Branch Awards Honorees: Mr. Jamarrea Anderson, and Ms. Shaterrica Spearman (Youth Excellence Awards); Ms. Pamela Moses (Jo Helen Imani Beard Community Service Award); Ms. Addison Richmond (Rising Phoenix Award) and The Meritorious Service to Branch was presented to Dr. Martha Robinson. President Harrell Carter presented the Presidential Awards to Mrs. Katie Brantley and Mr. Bennie Denton. Prior to the introduction of the speaker by Ms. Vickie Terry, Mr. Tyler Lewellen, Memphis ACTSO Gold Award Winner presented a piano selection and Ms. Alexandria Carney presented the vocal rendition of “Rise Up” to usher in guest speaker, Attorney Van Turner. Turner, a Shelby County Commissioner and President of the Memphis NAACP Branch was informative, compelling and challenging. Using PowerPoint to enhance his address he highlighted two catalytic efforts that he and others championed. These efforts were the removal of two Confederate statues from public spaces and the recent actions concerning Mason, TN and the Blue Oval City Project. He encouraged us to analyze, be consistent, be thorough and then act. Following Turner’s address, he was recognized by his Alpha Phi alpha Fraternity Brothers who presented him with a plaque of appreciation. The 59th Annual event ended with remarks by President Harrell Carter and the Benediction was offered by Bishop Henry M. Williamson of the First Episcopal District of the CME Church. Standing with First Lady Williamson, the Bishop concluded in his unique fashion, but not before informing the Mayor and Vice Mayor of Mason, TN that he had a check for them for the May Payment on their bill; ending with a fervent prayer. Amen!

Washington, DC- (May 20, 2022) - The American Public Gas Association (APGA) presented Jackson Energy Authority (JEA) with the prestigious APGA System Operational Achievement Recognition (SOAR) for excellence in operating its natural gas utility. Public natural gas systems are entrusted by their customers to deliver clean and affordable natural gas through a safe and reliable distribution pipeline system. To accomplish this mission, a forward thinking natural gas utility constantly strives to improve its operating capabilities, overcome challenges and adapt to its changing environment. Out of approximately 750 APGA members, JEA was selected for SOAR level GOLD by its peers on the APGA Operations and Safety Committee. The selection was based on demonstrated excellence in the four areas of system integrity, system improvement, employee safety, and workforce development. “We are proud of the service we provide to our customers,” said Jim Ferrell, JEA’s President and CEO. “Our employees work hard every day to provide the safest, most reliable natural gas services to homes, businesses and industries in our community”. “We take great pride in our ability to deliver natural gas safely and efficiently to all of our customers” said Braxton Williams, Senior Vice President of Gas Distribution at JEA. “This SOAR recognition is attributed to our exceptional team of employees who always go above and beyond in providing exceptional natural gas service to our community.” System integrity refers to the natural gas distribution system performing its overall intended function safely, efficiently and effectively—distributing energy to all customers without being degraded or impaired by its internal or external environment. System improvement refers to keeping the natural gas system well maintained and up-to-date through a self-improvement program that includes both an eye on the future through research and development, technology integration and a commitment to system improvement programs. Systems that exhibit excellence in employee safety include adopting a safety program that includes policies and procedures for education involvement and accountability for all employees, as well as tracking safety performance. Lastly, workforce development focuses on creative recruitment, training, education and development practices that provide a return on investment through increased employee loyalty, motivation, safety and productivity. APGA President and CEO Dave Schryver remarked, “JEA was highly rated in all four areas that are required of SOAR. JEA consistently demonstrates a commitment to providing natural gas safely and efficiently to all those in their community and as such, serves as a model for all other natural gas utilities in the country. APGA is proud to recognize JEA and is confident in their continued success.” JEA was one of fourteen SOAR recipients recognized in 2022, joining the 43 previous SOAR award recipients. The system also received a plaque signifying Jackson Energy Authority’s commitment to and achievement in excellence in operating a natural gas utility system. APGA looks forward to recognizing JEA at its Annual Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota in July. NOTICE OF VEHICLES TO BE SOLD

IT TAKES A TEAM:
Cynthia Clifton joined Jackson Madison County School System as a school crossing guard in 2022 to support the students and families at Arlington Elementary. “I always did want to be a crossing guard. I was inspired by Ms. Helen Porter.” Cynthia retired from healthcare after serving as a certified nursing assistant for 34 years. We’re grateful for our support staff members. They’re essential to our team. Check out http://jmcss.org for employment opportunities (or this quick link) >>> https://bit.ly/3t0m4ih
