Humboldt Juneteenth Celebrated with Music, Dance and Reflections - P 13 Gov. Bill Lee proclaims June 19 as ‘Juneteenth Day’ in Tennessee
by Associated Press -Thursday, June 18th 2020 NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Gov. Bill Lee has signed a proclamation that recognizes Juneteenth, the cultural holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved black people in the United States. Lee said Thursday that he would sign the resolution on Friday, but the Republican stopped short of saying Juneteenth should be a state holiday or enshrined in state law for special observance. Lee released an image of the proclamation on Friday with the caption, “On this 155th Anniversary of #Juneteenth, we recognize the end of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865. I signed a Juneteenth proclamation to honor this day as it represents the promise of a free and just society that is guaranteed for every Tennessean.”

Pickens, 26th District Attorney General, has been elected by fellow members of the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference (TNDAGC) to serve as vice president on the organization’s Executive Committee. In this new position, Pickens will play a pivotal role in guiding the overall administration of justice in Tennessee. “I am honored to have been chosen to serve as vice president of the Executive Committee,” Pickens said, “I have been privileged to serve on the Executive Committee for the past three years, working alongside incredible teams from across the state. I look forward to stepping into this new role and serving the people of Tennessee, ensuring the work we are doing provides justice and protects the most vulnerable in our great state.” After graduating from law school in 1996, Pickens was appointed Assistant District Attorney General by Jerry Woodall, a position he held for 21 years. After Woodall’s retirement, Pickens was appointed District Attorney General by Gov. JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION
People all over the world celebrated the newly established holiday that represented freedom finally. But, again are we really free? Is it freedom at all cost or is it freedom at no cost. Celebrations West Tennessee were held OUTDOORS everywhere with Ray Jones with bounce Send photos to: houses and numberonecoach@hotmail.com children having a big time. However, we or 731-694-8614 must teach our children the real struggles that our ancestors went through to get where we think we are or supposed to be. The entitlement that they think they have might be a rude awakening unless we prepare them for where we really are at this time in American History. Yes, it is an official holiday, but there are forces that are still trying to set freedom back hundreds of years right before our very eyes. What is crucial is that we teach the generations coming along to not just celebrate the holiday but exercise the rights and opportunities that exist now that didn’t when the struggles of June 1865 held back Blacks who would thrive today if they had the chance we have. Not to diminished the holiday celebrations but to enhance the opportunities to be the leaders that our ancestors were who lost their lives fighting for our freedom. The chains are broken and let’s keep them off. PHOTOS ARE JUNETEENTH CELEBRATIONS.

Man charged in basketball game shooting - Cont’d from page 1
“As I was looking at that video before the incident occurred, all those people happy, having a good time. You’d see people greeting each other and hugging and laughing and everything. They’re there to enjoy a high school basketball game. And folks are showing up to the games with what I consider are mostly weapons of war. It’s just, it’s disgusting,” said Gibson County General Sessions Court Judge Mark Agee. When we arrived at the Gibson County Courthouse on Monday morning, there appeared to already be a commotion outside of the court. The family of the victims were upset they were not allowed in the courtroom. Inside, five different people were called to the stand to give their testimony and give their account of what happened the night of the basketball game. Pankey’s longtime girlfriend says she was told by Pankey there was an argument between him and Hardiman prior to meeting her near the concession stand. She claims Hardiman was trying to get Pankey outside and that she tried to stop the two from arguing. The video of the shooting was played from different angles in front of the courtroom. The state argues Hardiman entered the Humboldt High School gymnasium with a Glock .40-caliber with an extended magazine, fired it with intent to kill Pankey, and also killed Clifton and shot Cross. “There ain’t nobody who would legally have a pistol that’ll hold 24 rounds. I don’t think a civilian has absolutely zero use for that. But that’s not my decision. If you go with a game sporting that kind of hardware, you are going prepared to kill even if you haven’t specifically intended to kill at that point. It’s only reason to walk around that kind of weapon,” Agee said. The defense says although it is wrong for someone underage and on school property to have possession of a gun, Hardiman held one for Tara self defense due to being a Skinner victim of a violent crime. They believe Hardiman fired the gun in fear for his life because Pankey, who approached him, was friends with the guy who shot Hardiman back in August of 2020. “The video does show that it does not indicate that the defendant approach Pankey. I don’t know what kind of words Realtor, Broker, have been said between them, if any, but Pankey Developer definitely approached 731-215-0035 him,” Agee said. taraskinner@yahoo.com Cont’d @ wbbjtv.com Century 21 Action Realty 620 Old Hickory - Ste 101 Jackson, TN 38305 731-668-7700

CITIZENS BRING CONCERNS TO CITY OFFICIALS
By Downtown Ricky Brown Jackson residents gathered at the branch offices of the Jackson Madison County NAACP in downtown Jackson to share and discuss their concerns with local officials regarding community issues. The East Chester neighborhood association also helped plan and organize this community meeting. Many citizens in city council district 2 asked questions of Jackson Mayor Scott Conger, Councilman Johnny Dodd, along with city department leaders. Some topics brought before the leaders were neighborhood community blight, affordable and public housing, boarded up homes in the community, crime and jobs. The meeting allowed citizens to address first hand their concerns directly to Mayor Conger, Councilman Dodd and city department heads including newly appointed Chief of Police Thom Corley. Councilman Dodd said “the approval for additional housing in east Jackson will hopefully come in the next couple weeks. NAACP President Harrell Carter served as the host location for the meeting and as moderator the group questions and discussions. Mayor Conger indicated “the meeting allowed city leaders to listen to residents concerns and effectively plan how to address each concern individually.” More community meetings are planned and NAACP and East Chester Neighborhood association leaders encouraged citizens to get involved and be a partner in the solutions as well.

Driving While Black is Not a Crime! Alvin Harris
Not sure if I can do this if not please forgive me and take it down but on last Thursday night my son was on Highland coming south and a JPD got behind him and followed him and my son didn’t stop until he felt safe and did I’m not going to get into detail about the situation but I can say this it was racial profile but the reason was not warrant for the pull over and the officer lied about why he pulled my son over for and have paper to say what he accuse my son of pertaining to his car and I know they get accused of a lot of things that’s not true but on this time we have paperwork that’s in compliance of the Tennessee Law and other things that he asked my son that was unnecessary and unprofessional, we as a community and those in law enforcement have to do better between each other and work together as a whole and stop the nitpicking and this is on both sides it’s going to have to stop before it gets worse and it can be done if we work together and I say to those who don’t know, know the Law so that you don’t fall for anything that’s being told to you by law enforcement because they don’t expect for people to know and have knowledge of the law because knowledge is power and I’m not talking about being argumental with them but know the Law and my son didn’t know and now he’s scared to death to drive his car now because on that night he didn’t know what was going to happen to him, just because he’s driving a nice car which is a Dodge Challenger and he’s a young black man who’s works and is going back to college to get another degree and is God fearing young black man. I told him don’t worry it’s going to get better and the matter will be addressed.
Sunshine Rogers
This also happened to my son getting off workone night. He drives a mustang and the officer asked him if it was his car and how he got it, etc. Knowing that he had already ran his tags and got his name. This scared me to get a call from him at 1:30 in the morning when he got off work. They’re always in my prayers but something needs to be done about this.
Alvin Harris
Sunshine Rogers - I’m sorry to hear that, as a black community we need to come together and address problem like this, I’m working on this type of situation so that it doesn’t happen again because if we don’t they’re going to keep doing this and we can’t let them get comfortable with doing this and to be held accountable for their actions, will be and will continue to pray for our young people because they are our future.

Faces I Remember
It is with a heavy heart that I write this article. I have struggled with how to approach what I might say while remaining positive and prescribing to responsible journalism. As I have indicated in previous articles, my students respond to my teaching as I speak the truth to them. My previous article was difficult because I was aware of the senseless school shootings in Uvalde, Texas. At this point I need to affirm that the opinions stated in this article are my own and if unedited, I appreciate and commend the Crime Seen Examiner for printing. In my last article I spoke a lot about context in understanding what you read. I have decided to define certain terms, so hopefully, there is no misunderstandings or ambiguity as to my point of view. Often, I hear students tell me that when they graduate, they will be “grown up” and make their own decisions regarding their life, career, and future. I decided to Google what it means to be a grown up: mature-adjective. Someone who is grown up is physically and mentally mature and no longer depends on their parents or another adult. I remind you that both the shooters in Buffalo, NY and Uvalde, TX were 18. Interesting, I wonder how many students read that before making such a bold statement. I bring this up as due to the proliferation of smartphones in school, students are more likely to utilize this reference as opposed to one offered by a teacher. We currently live in an age of misinformation and parents; do you really want your child learning about life from someone you do not know nor are ever likely to meet? Many students have solid parental support at home, but that does not apply to all students. Bullying no longer ends when the school bell rings. You would be amazed at what a student would tell their teacher at school, even a substitute. I get fussed at for not remembering names, but I have met a lot of students and do not have full semester assignments. I change schools and grades and it is difficult to remember each one. But I do care for each student I am involved with, just as their teacher would be. I simply strive to be a catalyst to inspire a student to have the confidence to reach their potential and beyond. Parents, let’s hearken back to the day when parents and teachers had a united front and put education and learning back into school, brush the pandemic aside, and leave the entertainment at home for enjoyment after school. RIGHT TO CHOOSE We have heard a lot about this today in relation to Roe v. Wade and Second Amendment rights. This Father’s Day, close your eyes and think about the father’s and families in Buffalo, New York that did not get to choose how they spend their family time this year. As you lift up prayers for them, think of the teachers and families of the children from Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas. I hope you join with me in sharing my tears with them as I pray. The AR-15 has been dubbed America’s rifle by the NRA. I don’t have time to discuss the availability of tactical body armor at gun shows and online. When teachers were allowed to teach and students learned how to read before they got to fourth grade, we did not have any of this in our schools or communities. It should not be life threatening to go to the supermarket in fear because of the color of your skin. This is one of the harsh realities of our profession
Chandra Maclin In true teacher form, after reading the article regarding this Metro Nashville employee, I had to do a little research. This happened at a time in which I was attending a conference surrounded by other educators from across the state. It provided the perfect opportunity to engage in dialogue regarding salary, retention, work conditions, and the future of American Education, specifically in the state of Tennessee. This is one of the harsh realities of our profession. It is problematic and indicative of the impact of finances on individuals working in schools. While not knowing the specifics of this situation, access to competitive wages, financial services, and true public advocacy for those working in schools can alter a school employee’s need to “find work elsewhere.” While Metro Nashville is not rural West Tennessee, we are beginning to see how the cost of living is impacting people’s abilities to provide for thier families. We are not spared from the financial state of our citiy, state, and nation. The difference is, more people working in schools, post COVID, are exploring other options. In long term planning, districts should make provisions and cost of living adjustments, especially as new funds are issued to schools. Retaining dedicated employees and attracting new talent is critical to a district’s ability to achieve exemplary status in their communities. Let’s face it, to sustain quality schools, communities must invest in schools- the facilities, the programs, the students, and especially the school employees.

TEACHER PAY
by Jozelda Porter Currently teachers are the most underpaid professionals in the nation. Teachers are not valued as can be seen in the lack of support from our legislators. It is not surprising that many are leaving the profession due to not only poor wages but physical and mental abuse that remains a concern. Each time teachers receive a raise their benefit package is increased so the pay becomes stagnant with the added pressure of test scores determining the worth of an educator. It is time for a complete overhaul in the formula for teacher compensation. Teachers are the backbone of this country, and they carry the future in their hands as they report each day to critical working conditions. We are at a crisis in this country as education has taken a backseat to entertainment and crony capitalism as our officials seek to pad their own pockets while the true soldiers struggle to make ends meet. Ask any teacher and you will find that they must work a second job to make ends meet. Yet they are expected to report everyday and wear many hats for the children that they love by meeting all sorts of needs all while trying to get the students to grade level. It is time for our government to recognize the true worth of its educators and pay them a wage that is comparable to the training and cost that they have undertaken to be the best teacher possible. Please find my statement attached. These are my views and not those of the Humboldt City School District. Black Music, Black Poetry
Blues and Jazz’s Impact on African American Versification Edited By Gordon E. Thompson Copyright Year 2014

Book Description
Black Music, Black Poetry offers readers a fuller appreciation of the diversity of approaches to reading black American poetry. It does so by linking a diverse body of poetry to musical genres that range from the spirituals to contemporary jazz. The poetry of familiar figures such as Paul Laurence Dunbar and Langston Hughes and less well-known poets like Harryette Mullen or the lyricist to Pharaoh Sanders, Amos Leon Thomas, is scrutinized in relation to a musical tradition contemporaneous with the lifetime of each poet. Black music is considered the strongest representation of black American communal consciousness; and black poetry, by drawing upon such a musical legacy, lays claim to a powerful and enduring black aesthetic. The contributors to this volume take on issues of black cultural authenticity, of musical imitation, and of poetic performance as displayed in the work of Paul Laurence Dunbar, Langston Hughes, Sterling Brown, Amiri Baraka, Michael Harper, Nathaniel Mackey, Jayne Cortez, Harryette Mullen, and Amos Leon Thomas. Taken together, these essays offer a rich examination of the breath of black poetry and the ties it has to the rhythms and forms of black music and the influence of black music on black poetic practice.
As of old the Red Sea parted, And oppressed passed safely through, Back from the North, the bold South, started, And a fissure wide she drew; Drew a cleft of Liberty, Through it, marched our people free. And, in memory, ever grateful, Of the day they reached the shore, Meet we now, with hearts e’er faithful, Joyous that the storm is o’er. Storm of Torture! May grim Past, Hurl thee down his torrents fast. Bring your harpers, bring your sages, Bid each one the story tell; Waft it on to future ages, Bid descendants learn it well. Kept it bright in minds now tender, Teach the young their thanks to render. Come with hearts all firm united, In the union of a race; With your loyalty well plighted, Look your brother in the face, Stand by him, forsake him never, God is with us now, forever. https://poets.org/poem/emancipation

Voting Matters
This is Andre Darnell, School Board member for District 6 Position 2 in Jackson
By Kathy Moore Hello community of Jackson, Tennessee soon we will have an ELECTION. Some think Voting doesn’t matter. I personally know the opposite; voting does matter. But over 25 years I’ve yet to elect the right candidates that understand the streets are killing our children, the pain is destroying our families and our families are turning to drugs. I understand there’s so much going on in this world but our children’s life is #1 to broken hearted mothers ..so I ask you in Jesus All Mighty Name Please Vote!
Tammy Floyd-Wade is a native of Gibson County in Milan, Tennessee. She is married to Eddie Wade. They have 3 children, 3 grandchildren, and 2 grand pups. She is a certified PD Specialist for the Child Development Council (CDA) from Washington, DC to assist teachers in the early childhood field receive their credentials. Mrs. Wade served almost twenty years as a member of the Jonah Affordable Housing (JAHO) which provides affordable and safe living for low income families. She served as a member of the Gibson County Voters Council, Milan Elementary School Pre-school Advisory Board, the UT Extension Advisory, and the National Women in Municipal Government (WIMG). When asked why she decided to run for mayor Mrs. Wade stated, “I have lived in Gibson County all of my life. I have watched Gibson County grow, and with growth comes change. I would greatly appreciate your support.
As an advocate for public education, I will continue to ensure that each student is served in the best capacity based on their individual needs. If we invest in quality teachers, provide adequate training and competitive pay, our teachers will invest in our students; providing support to our teachers and school employees is the foundation for our student success. It has been an honor over the past two years serving on the board for JMCSS. And in September of this year, I will earn my Level III Boardsmanship Achievement from the Tennessee School Board Association for enhancing my boardsmanship skills and showing my community that I take pride in my public servant role seriously. As School board member, I presented a policy to implement community walk zones for all schools which lead to the redrawing of the JCM 6-12 school zone to include a 2-block radius around the school in District 6. As Technology chair in 2021, I made the board aware of the Emergency Connectivity Grant opportunity where the District was awarded $267,000 for Technology. I will maintain a pragmatic approach in governance that keeps a culture of transparency, engagement and collaboration for the board and the community. ReElect Andre Darnell for School Board District 6 Position 2 during early voting dates starting on July 15 through July 30th or on Election Day August 4th.
