JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION

West Tennessee All over West Tennessee people were having a good time this past OUTDOORS weekend. It was a wonderful sight to see people of all ages coming with Ray Jones together to celebrate freedom as a holiday. The question is: Are we really Send photos to: numberonecoach@hotmail.com free or are we pretending to be free? or 731-694-8614 I wonder how many of the people having fun really understand what this day means and how we should carry on from what was started long ago. If the freed slaves had the opportunities that we have today can you imagine what they would be doing with it. There are many who take our freedom for granted and barely take advantage of the fact that we are free. Freedom from slavery is a great thing but we have to be sure not to have chains on our present day opportunities to take advantage of education and technical programs to continue advancing our cause. Although slavery has officially ended the prolonged affects of it still continue in many ways. Slaves knew that strength comes in numbers and that fact still holds true today. If we can keep that same mind set the progress and success will continue throughout generations. Congratulations Americans Juneteenth is a National Holiday. PHOTO IS PEOPLE CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH.

Happy Juneteenth!

You have probably heard much news about the Juneteenth holiday—especially because on last week, legislation was signed making Juneteenth a federal holiday. Although Juneteenth is June 19, the federal holiday was observed on Friday, June 18, since when federal holidays fall on a weekend, the holiday is observed the Friday before or Monday after the actual holiday. U.S. Marshals Capture West TN Federal Prison Escapee

Memphis, Tenn. – Following a joint investigation by the Marshals Service and FBI, Cecil Corey Haggins, 33, of McMinnville, TN, was arrested last Wednesday by Marshals from the Eastern and Western Districts of Tennessee. Haggins and his girlfriend were both taken into custody at a hotel on Interstate Drive in Manchester, TN. They are being held at the Coffee County Jail and both are anticipated to face federal charges related to his escape. On June 14, Bureau of Prisons staff conducted a special count and determined that Haggins was missing from the Federal Correctional InstitutionMemphis, Federal Prison Camp in Millington. Haggins was serving a 120-month sentence for possession with intent to distribute fifty grams or more of a methamphetamine mixture and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense. “Escapees pose a unique threat because they know the consequences if caught,” said U.S. Marshal Tyreece Miller. “Now Mr. Haggins will have even more time to think. I’m grateful for the partnerships with the FBI and the Marshals on the other end of the state.” 06-24-21 CSENEWS P.4

This year there was short notice between the passing of legislation recognizing Juneteenth as a federal holiday and the actual date of the holiday. Therefore, many places, including the United States Post Office and certain federal courts, remained open on June 18. Juneteenth is a celebration of June 19, 1865, which is the date that the state of Texas received the order that enslaved persons were to be free. The Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued in September 1862, was supposed to go into effect in January 1863. However, enslaved persons in Texas (and other places) did not actually receive “freedom” when the Emancipation Proclamation supposedly went into effect. In fact, it would take the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865 for legal slavery to be abolished in the United States. There has been rising interest in the Juneteenth holiday, especially in light of the increased attention given to racial injustices. Not surprisingly, there has also been much debate about the recognition of Juneteenth as a federal holiday. Some have argued that the true purpose of the holiday, emancipation for enslaved people, is being overshadowed by the commercialization of the holiday. Others have asserted that there is no need to celebrate a holiday which is an observation of delayed freedom since certain enslaved people did not learn of their freedom until months after the Emancipation Proclamation. Still others argue that the celebration of Juneteenth adds to the division in a country where racial tensions are already high. Amid all the debate about Juneteenth, the federal government nevertheless has started the tradition of a national observation of the holiday. This means that, going forward, each year federal workplaces, offices, and services will not operate on the date that Juneteenth is observed. Additionally, many private organizations have also chosen to observe the holiday. Indeed, you have probably seen notices, advertisements, and other symbols of recognition in observation of Juneteenth. Recently, Dr. Melynda Price, a lawyer, who is also a professor at the University of Kentucky, shared her personal reflections and connections to the Juneteenth holiday. Dr. Price, a native of Texas, notes that the celebration of Juneteenth is, for many descendants of enslaved people, not a new holiday or celebration. The Rambsy Law team hopes that you are not only remaining safe and healthy, but that you are enjoying or at least striving for continued FREEDOM—not only in your lives, but in the lives of others. On this Juneteenth, we are reminded that there is still so much work to be done in the fight for FREEDOM. Although slavery is now “illegal,” many people still lack “freedom.” Therefore, the fight for FREEDOM means abolishing injustice in whatever areas it may exist. HAPPY JUNETEENTH! Be Safe! Be Healthy! Be Free! Phillis and the Rambsy Law Team

And Your Point is . . . Outside the Citrus Bowl There is an old adage that says when life gives you lemons, then you make lemonade! I must confess when this school board gets in sync with the superintendent and his leadership team, make no mistake; this lemonade will definitely sell! Since the spring semester has ended at Liberty Tech; I have been a mentor for Tennessee Promise students from Gibson County High School, UT Promise students from UTM, and a judge at Union University for NITOC (national speech and debate competition for home school students). In addition to that I was a substitute teacher in Gibson County Special School District from 2019-2021. Perception is what you have in the moment and perspective is what you gain when you look back on where you have been. There are some excellent students at JMCSS and opportunities abound beginning this fall and beyond. The biggest difference I have seen between a rural school district (GCSSD), home school students, and JMCSS students is parental oversight and accountability.

“The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice.” ~Brian Herbert (SHRM)

There Is No Such Thing as Luck. What we perceive as luck is the convergence of proper preparation and opportunity. Students, get ready this fall to take advantage of opportunities coming your way. Teachers are ready, the pandemic is receding and it is time for students to stop blaming and start learning. JMCSS has 21 projects at 14 schools and a full-time fine arts program coming within a year. You get out of education what you put into it. I am looking forward to being a part of the winning team this fall and let’s focus on acceleration and not remediation. You must be able to read to succeed and I am not referring to text messages. Students it’s your future so you would do well to invest wisely into a good outcome. High school graduation is simply the end of the beginning.

I attended the grand opening of Helping Hands of Tennessee and was pleased to see Ms. Vivian Williams (Assistant Superintendent) and Ms. Doris Black (chairman of long-range planning committee for the school board). It is encouraging to see them getting out to see what new opportunities are coming into the community. There were several representatives from Concorde Career Institute in Memphis. The resurgence of Jackson Madison County Schools is being watched from Nashville to Memphis. Good things happen when you have a proactive school board, a chairman with a growth mindset, and a superintendent that is not averse to being transparent and inviting involvement from stakeholders in decisions that are being made to ensure future success. FREEDOM (after the 61st US Colored Troops) James E Cherry

Freedom is a broken shackle rusting between rows of Tennessee cotton.

Historical Marker dedicated to Infantry Regiment United States Colored Troops (USCT) from Madison County

Downtown Ricky Brown The 61st U S Colored Infantry Regiment of June 1862, was recognized when a marker was unveiled at the Madison County Courthouse Friday. Originally known as the 2nd U. S. Infantry Volunteers (African Descent). In December 1863, at the Battle of Moscow, Tennessee, the 61st was one of the first Tennessee USCT units to see combat in the Civil War. It’s men saw service in Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. During the service the regiment lost one officer, 37 men were killed and mortally wounded; and two officers and 316 enlisted men succumbed to disease. The 61st mustered out of active duty on December 26, 1865 after which some became a part of the regular U S Army Pictured: top) Denmark native, Kenneth Hurst -Navy Chief (retired) and wife Varetta poes with West Nelson in from of the historical marker. Freedom is stealing moonlight from swampland, bare footprints tracking the north star. Freedom is squalor on the edge of town erected from the pen of Abe Lincoln. Call me contraband. Freedom is a uniform sewn of Union necessity, a blue wool cloak for African manhood Freedom is Six and a half dollars less for a colored troop, compound interest on insult and disease. Freedom is a regiment of runaways, black faces armed with courage and Springfield rifles. Johnny Reb enraged in retreat. Freedom is Six hundred hands in surrender to Bedford Forrest’s bayonets. The Mississippi hemorrhages at Henning. Freedom is an heirloom around Harriet’s neck bequeathed to her children’s children and those waiting to be born.

Freedom is an unmarked grave on some great gettin’ up morning raising a hallelujah. James E Cherry’s latest collection of poetry is Loose Change from Stephen F Austin University Press and is available wherever books are sold. He is president of The Griot Collective of West Tennessee, a poetry workshop. 06-24-21 CSENEWS P.13

MULTIPLE DOLLAR GENERAL STORES TARGETED IN ROBBERIES

June 19, 2021 Jessica Davis - wbbjtv.com West Tenn. — Several robberies at Dollar General stores have been reported across West Tennessee. Hardeman County Sheriff’s Office received a report that the Dollar General store in Toone had been robbed around 10 this morning. The store is located off Highway 100 near Toone. Wbbj was told the store was robbed by a black man seen leaving in a dark SUV. At least three or four deputies were on the scene investigating late Saturday morning. Then shortly after McNairy County Sheriff’s Office was notified of another Dollar General robbery, this time in Bethel Springs. The robbery happened shortly after 11 a.m. Authorities tell us two black men entered the Dollar General in Bethel Springs. They were inside the store casing it just before the robbery occurred. Officials believe that one of the two men in the robbery was also involved in the event that happened earlier in Toone. “Well I just got off the phone with Sheriff Buck in McNairy County and I believe our suspect is going to be the same suspect. Everything pretty much matched,” said Hardeman County Sheriff John Doolen. The suspects in the Bethel Springs robbery were last seen running across the street and getting into a dark colored vehicle. It is unsure at this time if these two robberies had any connection to the previous two robberies that occurred in Greenfield and Gadsden.

MOTHER JAILED AFTER DELETING TEXTS BETWEEN HER SON AND THE WOMAN HE’S CHARGED WITH MURDERING

POLICE SAY MAN POSING AS MUSIC PRODUCER LURED TEEN ON SNAPCHAT FOR SEX

Jun 22, 2021 - Shay Arthur - wreg.com MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 48-year-old man is accused of posing as a music producer to lure a teenage girl into a sexual relationship. Oliver Duckworth is facing charges after police say he had an ongoing sexual relationship with a girl who was just 16 years old. She says she met the man on social media. No one answered the door Tuesday at the South Memphis home off Humber where the crime allegedly happened. Duckworth told a teenage girl he recorded music. She says she met him on the social media app Snapchat, where he claimed to be music producer. The teen told police Duckworth had an Uber bring her to the home back in November 2020. They were supposed to record music but soon started having a sexual relationship. The girl said she told Duckworth she was 16 but the inappropriate relationship continued. Through their investigation detectives found messages between Duckworth and the 16-year-old discussing her age and smoking marijuana. This is the second time in the last few days we’ve told you about a teenager meeting a stranger online that ends in an arrest. have a plan in case they feel unsafe. Duckworth’s bond is $5,000.

06/18/2021 - Jason Steen - scoopnashville.com Robert Johnson, the man who is charged with murdering his girlfriend, Pamela Paz, and trying to sell a car with her dead body in the back seat, exchanged text messages with the murder victim from his mother’s phone on the day she died. His mother, 67-year-old Naomi D. Wolf has now admitted to deleting those text messages. She was jailed Thursday, charged with tampering with evidence. A warrant was sworn out on 06/14, detailing that investigators searched the home of Robert Johnson and his Mother, Naomi Wolf, at 101 26th St in Lakewood. Johnson was arrested at the residence, and warrants were obtained for the property. His mother was cooperative, according to court records, and claimed her son was home all weekend, and couldn’t have possibly been involved in the murder of that woman, according to investigators. Except that turned out to not be true. Naomi Wolf (MNPD) Further questioning revealed that Johnson didn’t have his own cell phone, but would use his mother’s. She let detectives review the phone, and they notice the texts from the time period of the days around the murder had been removed from the text conversation. She admitted she had deleted the texts between her son and the woman that was now dead. The deleted texts were from 04/30/21, which is the date MNPD says they believe Pamela Paz was murdered. A later release from MNPD would detail that Johnson also attempted to sell a vehicle with her dead body in the backseat at the time. Naomi Wolf was booked into the Metro Nashville Jail on 06/17 at 8:41 p.m., charged with tampering with evidence. She is free on a $10,000 bond. 06-24-21 CSENEWS P.15
