MEMORIAL DAY

West Tennessee All around West Tennessee grills are smoking while family and friends OUTDOORS are gathered in yards as well as parks, eager to bond with people they with Ray Jones haven’t been in close contact for months. Send photos to: Children played with others while gobbling down hot dogs and adults numberonecoach@hotmail.com or 731-694-8614 throwing down on ribs, steaks and chicken. But do they even know the real reason for the celebration? Most do not.

Memorial Day is an American Holiday (May 30) observed the last Monday of May commemorating members of the armed forces killed in the military.

It is good to see all the fun after being locked down for nearly 2 years, but it is important that we teach our youth the real meaning of special event holidays. Many children and adults have no clue as to the real meaning of Memorial Day. Servicemen and women gave their lives so that we can have the freedom that we have and we must make sure our youth understand and appreciate the real meaning. To all who have served in the military we salute you and thanks for being the brave Americans that you are. Photo: Mark Reinstein/Corbis/Getty Images

The Gibson County Sheriff gave a class to the community talking about the use of deadly force. Use Of Force A firearms instructor went over the policy for the use of deadly force and the laws related to it. Gibson County Sheriff, Paul Thomas says the class is to simply help everyone understand when deadly force is permitted. “I just want everybody to be safe, be responsible, and be proficient with your weapon if you’re going to carry it and practice with it,” Thomas said. COACH’S APPRECIATION

I am utterly speechless and completely overjoyed to know that I have had such a tremendous affect on a group of people (Jackson Northside Girls Basketball). Never in a million years would I have imagined that one year of coaching, and not even a whole year.. COVID put a halt on summer practices, then it limited the practices we could have, missing games, quarantines & isolations.... just a really rough season overall.. but it was a great one. One full of family, togetherness, love, support and dedication. I will forever remember these girls and their parents. They habe shown me soooooo much love. I cannot express how proud I am to have known u all. Thank you for supporting me and most of all, believing in me. There will never be another group like u and I will never, ever forget you! CELEBRATE THE ACCOMPLISHMENT AND THEN LAUNCH YOUR CAREER!

After teaching CTE at Liberty Tech this spring semester, I could not help but be excited about the future of this group of graduates in the Class of 2021! For those that have handled the challenges and obstacles throughout this school year; the future looks bright as they have added resilience to their list of credentials. I am grateful to have been a part of the process for those that embraced the challenge. This group of Seniors, has set the bar for the upcoming class to reach for and hopefully strive to rise above. I have mentioned before that the enemy of academic excellence is distraction and procrastination. Just ask the 27 students at JCM-Early College High that graduated with a high school diploma and an associate degree! Many of those students worked as well. Ask those students in the LOOP program or the ones that will benefit from $19.8 million in scholarships. This is just the first of many more diplomas to come with Dr. Marlon King’s signature. There are two new high schools opening up this fall and more opportunities for students interested in the LOOP program. Upcoming seniors I urge you not to let your smartphones get in the way of your upcoming success. These students had their minds on their business and not on nonsense. Once the students in my program at Liberty Tech realized that the semester was coming to an end; then they miraculously got busy on completing assignments. I had two students that actually rose a letter grade, over that short span of time. This experience was a very rewarding time for me as I was involved with grades, final exams, and composite grades for the course. I hope some students that were in my class will read this and realize why I was so intent upon them reaching their potential. The Future Begins Today! Students if you are in summer school, be thankful for the opportunity to get caught up. I urge all student to read books and not texts. Align yourself with any opportunities that may come your way in the fall. Athletes start working out today, so that you will just require a little coaching to be in playing shape. I am looking forward to being a part of the winning team once more in 2021-2022. I am truly excited about the options and opportunities that lie ahead for students in JMCSS. Join with me and have the attitude to be a part of the winning team! “Ability is what you are capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it. ~Lou Holtz Don Polley | Education contributor (Contact don@donpolley.com)

And Your Point is . . . It’s a Crime to Be Unhealthy!

#6 of 10 Articles by Well Connected Communities Coalition UT-TSU Extension Madison County By Susan Holloway, Program Assistant WCC Snacking is Serious during the Summer! How can it be nutritious? The Cargill is a global food company based in the United States. They researched 1,200 adults with and without children and found snacking is on the rise. What do you think of when you think snack? These surveyed thought of snack bars, salty snacks, candy, and sweet baked goods. Cargill concluded “snacks may be the most dynamic food category today.” I say snacks may be the most expensive part of your food expenses today. Ready prepared and prepackaged snacks can be a large percentage of food expenditures. Snacking can add nutrition and good maintenance of health problems or snacks can harm our control of weight and limit intake of nutritious foods. Everyone should be aware of the levels of sugar, salt, and fats in every food. The FAVORITE tasting foods may taste GOOD because the levels of these ingredients are so high. High levels of these ingredients may be most harmful to us with high blood pressure, high blood sugars, or heart disease. We must check the food labels to see if we can enjoy lower levels of the ingredients that make the best taste but the most harm. Do not be misled by words NATURAL or ORGANIC because these food items are not always lower in sugar, salt, and fats. Compare foods by comparing nutritional labeling facts. I have several suggestions for great tasting and healthy snacking: ~Almond Butter and Whole Wheat Crackers ~Slices of Real Cheeses (not cheese foods) and Whole Wheat Crackers ~Fruits and Raw Vegetables packaged in small zipper bags ~Whole Grain Frozen Waffles with Almond Butter and Fruit Slices. Always drink 16 ounces of water with each snack. Drinks other than water add sugar or sweeteners which are NOT necessary. Water is all the way wonderful! This is my favorite healthy way to serve fruit and prepare it ahead of snack time. Fresh or canned fruits are equally good if canned are in 100% juice or low-sugar syrup. Choose at least 5 different kinds – Strawberries, Blueberries, Peaches, Pears, Apricots, Pineapple Tidbits, Kiwi, Grapes, Mango, etc. Drain and save the juice of any canned ones. Cut all into small bite pieces. Use 3-ounce box of Sugar-Free Instant Vanilla Pudding Mix to thicken 2 cups of the juices (do not use milk as package directions say). Pour the pudding with juices over the fruits as a glaze to prevent aging. This will keep about 5 days in the refrigerator. I do not add bananas until serving time because they do not keep peeled and sliced as well as other fruits. Enjoy snacking!

Poetic Expression

Imperatives for Carrying On in the Aftermath Natasha Trethewey - 1966-

Do not hang your head or clench your fists when even your friend, after hearing the story, says: My mother would never put up with that.

BOOK IT . . .

Magical Negro is an archive of black everydayness, a catalog of contemporary folk heroes, an ethnography of ancestral grief, and an inventory of figureheads, idioms, and customs. These American poems are both elegy and jive, joke and declaration, songs of congregation and self-conception. They connect themes of loneliness, displacement, grief, ancestral trauma, and objectification, while exploring and troubling tropes and stereotypes of Black Americans. Focused primarily on depictions of black womanhood alongside personal narratives, the collection tackles interior and exterior politics of both the body and society, of both the individual and the collective experience. In Magical Negro, Morgan Parker creates a space of witness, of airing grievances, of pointing out patterns. In these poems are living documents, pleas, latent traumas, inside jokes, and unspoken anxieties situated as firmly in the past as in the present timeless black melancholies and triumphs.

Fight the urge to rattle off statistics: that, more often, a woman who chooses to leave is then murdered. The hundredth time your father says, But she hated violence, why would she marry a guy like that?— don’t waste your breath explaining, again, how abusers wait, are patient, that they don’t beat you on the first date, sometimes not even the first few years of a marriage. Keep an impassive face whenever you hear Stand by Your Man, and let go your rage when you recall those words were advice given your mother. Try to forget the first trial, before she was dead, when the charge was only attempted murder; don’t belabor the thinking or the sentence that allowed her ex-husband’s release a year later, or the juror who said, It’s a domestic issue— they should work it out themselves. Just breathe when, after you read your poems about grief, a woman asks: Do you think your mother was weak for men? Learn to ignore subtext. Imagine a thoughtcloud above your head, dark and heavy with the words you cannot say; let silence rain down. Remember you were told by your famous professor, that you should write about something else, unburden yourself of the death of your mother and just pour your heart out in the poems. Ask yourself what’s in your heart, that reliquary—blood locket and seed-bed—and contend with what it means, the folk-saying you learned from a Korean poet in Seoul: that one does not bury the mother’s body in the ground but in the chest, or—like you— you carry her corpse on your back. Trethewey was elected in 2019 both to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and as a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. Academy of American Poets Chancellor David St. John said Trethewey “is one of our formal masters, a poet of exquisite delicacy and poise who is always unveiling the racial and historical inequities of our country and the ongoing personal expense of these injustices. Rarely has any poetic intersection of cultural and personal experience felt more inevitable, more painful, or profound.” 06-03-21 CSENEWS P.10

JACKSON, Tenn. | The Lane College men’s basketball team will play the University of Memphis in an October exhibition, the school announced today. The Dragons will meet the Tigers on either Saturday, October 30th, or Sunday, October 31st, depending on the 20212022 NBA schedule. The game will be played at FedExForum in Memphis. “We are looking forward to a great opportunity for Lane College to compete against a major Division I talent in a hopefully electric atmosphere,” said Head Coach Andre Turner. “It is also exciting for two of Memphis Tigers’ own to coach against each other in this matchup.” Lane had its season canceled last year because of COVID-19. The SIAC elected not to sponsor winter sports. The Dragons were 11-17 in 2019-20. Memphis, which competes in Conference USA, finished 20-8 last season. After losing in the semifinals of the conference tournament to eventual champion Houston, the Tigers accepted an invitation to the NIT and went on to win the championship, defeating Mississippi State, 77-64. Both squads will be led by former Tigers’ legends. Andre Turner enters his first season as head coach for Lane College while Penny Hardaway will be in his fourth season with his alma mater. While playing for Memphis, Turner and Hardaway saw great success on the court. Turner finished his Memphis career with 1,442 points in four seasons, a total that ranks him 14th all-time in school history. He set the Memphis record for assists in a single game with 15 against South Carolina in 1986, assists in a season with 262 during the 1985-86 campaign, and assists in a career with 763. Turner was named to the All-Metro Conference Freshman Team, twice selected to the All-Metro Conference Team, the NCAA All-Midwest Regional Team, Al McGuire’s All-Freshman Team, Basketball Weekly’s All-South Team, the USBWA All-District 3 Team and the 1986 Associated Press and UPI All-American Teams. A two-time All-American and two-time Great Midwest Conference Player of the Year, Hardaway averaged 22.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 2.4 steals in 1992-93. According to the University of Memphis record books, this will be the first ever meeting between the two teams.

JACKSON, Tenn. | The Jackson-Madison County Sports Hall of Fame has announced its recipients of Male and Female Athlete of the Year Award for Lane College. Chris O’Neal was named Male Athlete of the Year while Candace Gains took home Female Athlete of the Year. O’Neal, a star on the baseball diamond, has appeared in 120 games and leaves Lane with a career batting average of .361 along with 123 runs scored, 31 doubles, 126 RBIs and a school record 31 home runs. He was named to the 2020 SIAC All-Academic Team as well as Black College Nines Second Team All-American. An infielder from Barnesville, Ga., O’Neal earned a degree in Business Administration. A native of Smyrna, Tenn., Gaines carries a 3.8 GPA and was named to the 2020 SIAC All-Academic Team while serving as a team captain for the Dragons. This year’s event will also recognize the 2019-2020 winners, Johnny Russell and Bre’elle Hawkins. Due to the pandemic, the JMCSHOF was unable to hold their annual banquet. Russell, a product of Memphis, Tenn., shined on the gridiron for the Dragons during the 2019 season. The defensive end finished with 32 total tackles, six tackles for loss, five sacks, and five quarterback hurries. An outside hitter from Riverview, Fla., Hawkins led the team in kills (270), aces (39), and points (322.5) to go along with 13.5 blocks and 41 assists. 06-03-21 CSENEWS P.11
